Why Gin Blossoms were forced to cancel remaining dates on New Miserable Experience Tour

gin blossoms tour cancelled

The Gin Blossoms have canceled the remaining stops on a tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of "New Miserable Experience,"  the quadruple-platinum breakthrough that spawned the hits "Hey Jealousy" and "Found Out About You."

The Tempe rockers shared the news on social media , saying "The NME 30th Anniversary Tour has been immensely successful and fun, but our bass player Bill Leen has had an accident and broken his arm."

Leen will be unable to perform for a few months.

The Blossoms considered converting to an acoustic format or bringing in a substitute for Leen.

"But our band has decided out of respect for our fans to reschedule & cancel the remaining tour dates," they posted.

"It doesn’t feel right to do an anniversary tour without our founding bass player. We’ve had a great time and some fabulous shows, and we regret these circumstances. But we care a great deal about presenting the best possible performance for our fans, and protecting the integrity of a celebratory anniversary tour."

Looking forward to Barenaked Ladies tour

They ended the post by saying they're "very excited" for their summer tour with Toad the Wet Sprocket and Barenaked Ladies, adding "Let’s all wish Bill a happy birthday and a speedy recovery."

Leen turned 60 on March 1.

Drummer Scott Hessel says, "It’s certainly disappointing to have to postpone the remaining shows of this run. However, this pales in comparison to our love and concern for Bill."

Hessel says they tried playing acoustically without bass.

"But we were clearly missing what Bill brings to the band," Hessel says. "Both his spirit and musicality on the low notes."

The Last Summer on Earth Tour with Toad the Wet Sprocket and Barenaked Ladies is set to launch Thursday, June 9, at Arizona Federal Theatre.

How 'Hey Jealousy' paved the way for other songs to hit

Released in August 1992, "New Miserable Experience" was not an overnight success. It took nearly a year, in fact, for the bittersweet jangle-rock crunch of "Hey Jealousy" to go Top 40, hitting No. 25 and doing even better on the Mainstream Rock chart.

Beyond 'Hey Jealousy': Ranking the Gin Blossoms' best songs of all time (so far)

By the time a second single from the album, "Found Out About You," topped Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart, the founding member who'd written both singles, guitarist Doug Hopkins, had died by suicide.

Although "New Miserable Experience" was destined to remain their biggest-selling album, two subsequent hits did make the pop charts. "Til I Hear It from You" from the soundtrack "Empire Records" and "Follow You Down" from the full-length followup to "New Miserable Experience," "Congratulations... I'm Sorry," peaked at No. 9 on Billboard Hot 100 as a double A-side.

Released in 1996, "Congratulations... I'm Sorry" hit the charts at No. 10, a career high for the Tempe rockers.

Looking back:   Gin Blossoms reflect on the difficult birth of 'Congratulations... I'm Sorry'

'Mixed Reality' is the group's latest

Their latest album, 2018's "Mixed Reality," was recorded at Mitch Easter's studio with producer Don Dixon — the team behind R.E.M.'s "Murmur" and "Reckoning."

At the time of that album's release, lead singer Robin Wilson talked about their tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of "New Miserable Experience."

“Listening to it again, in order, for the first time in 20 years or so, I relived the whole thing blow by blow," Wilson said.

Revisiting the album that launched his career was "a very nostalgic time" for Wilson.

"It was very much connected to my memories of those times and my memories of Doug. And I was really proud, you know? I listened and there was a moment where I was like, 'Holy crap, this is really good.' I mean, I always kind of knew it was but listening with fresh ears for the first time in a long time was pretty intense."

“We considered converting to an acoustic format, or bringing in a substitute for Bill," the band said in a Facebook announcement. "But our band has decided out of respect for our fans to reschedule & cancel the remaining tour dates.”

The first show affected by that decision is the group's Wednesday performance at the Aztec Theatre with Last Bandoleros. The venue has not yet released information on refunds.

Hailing from Arizona, US, Gin Blossoms are a power pop/rock band who brought forth a lighter, pop-oriented sound, acting as an antidote to the gloom of the grunge era that dominated alternative rock in the 90s.

Initially formed in 1987 by bassist Bill Leen and guitarist Doug Hopkins, they struggled to find a stable lineup, finally settling on vocalist Jesse Valenzuela, Drummer Phillip Rhodes and guitarist Robin Wilson, who went on to switch roles with Valenzuela. They recorded the album "Dusted" independently, releasing it in 1989, catching the attention of A&R records, who signed the the following year.

It was their next release, 1991's "Up & Crumbling," that established Gin Blossoms as a band on the rise, breaking into the mainstream charts with their hit single, "Hey Jealousy" in 1993. The band's southwest sound was decidedly fresh against the flurry of grunge bands that were popular at the time, blending the rootsy country-blues rock of the Byrds with R.E.M's guitar hooks in the similar vein to fellow Arizona artists the Meat Puppets, The Refreshments and Dead Hot Workshop. Their third full length, "New Miserable Experience" (1992), as well as "Hey Jealousy" was full of hit singles, like "Found Out About You," with these songs dominating MTV and radio stations, going on to sell over one million copies.

However, struggling with alcoholism and depression, Doug Hopkins was fired from the band, leading to his tragic suicide on December 5th 1993, which occurred just as his songs had begun to dominate the airwaves. He was replaced by guitarist Scott Johnson, with the band recording their second album, "Congratulations… I'm Sorry" in 1996, the name being prompted by the death of Hopkins. The album charted well and featured one top ten hit, "Follow You Down," yet it received mixed reviews from the music press.

The band disbanded in 1997, embarking on various other projects, before reuniting again in 2001, initially for a one-off New Year's Eve concert. However, this was followed by a summer-long tour, finding new interest from fans and the public of their music, reissuing "Dusted" to renewed acclaim.

The band released a batch of new material in 2006, with the album "Major Lodge Victory" reestablishing them in the alternative rock scene, with the album reaching number 159 in the Billboard 200 album chart. In 2010 they released their fifth album, "No Chocolate Cake," offering a more refined album that reflected their recent dietary requirements. Through continued touring, they have maintained the band's popularity, most notably with their performances in the nationwide 'Summerland Tour' in 2012, where they played at 31 dates alongside bands including Everclear, Sugar Ray and Marcy Playground.

Live reviews

It has been 15 years since I have been to a Gin Blossoms show (now I feel old). I was excited to hear that they would be playing in my area again, at the same venue. This made me very excited as it's a small intimate venue.

It was interesting to see them return.I found my seat and waited for the show to begin. The crowd was full of people in their 30's and 40's. These were longtime fans just like me. The lights dimmed and "Hey Jealousy" began to play. I was immediately transported back to the mid 90's. The band sounded and looked great as they smashed through "Allison Road" and "Found Out About You". For the next 90 minutes the Gin Blossoms transformed the crowd to another time. The music has proven to be timeless, with the band sounding fresh and energized.

Towards the end of the show, the band took a break and thanked the crowd. They told stories about how they remembered playing this venue many years ago. It was a very moving moment. They lifted the mood by playing a few more upbeat songs. The show was over and I felt like I had experienced something unique. I hope it is not another 15 years before I see the Gin Blossoms because I am old now and might be 6ft under!

I went to the Claddah Pub in Lawrence to see the Gin Blossoms. The tickets were general admission and said that the doors opened at 6:00 and the concert would start at 7:00. We were there at 6:00 sharp. No mention of a back-up band on the tickets. The first back-up band that sounded like Hole gone hoarse came on at 7:30 or so and played until about 8:30. We though the Blossoms would come on next, but a second, horrible heavy metal band came out next. My wife then asked an employee of the pub when the Blossoms would be coming on stage. He said between 10:10 and 10:30. My wife had to get up early the next day, so we left at about 9:15 without seeing the Blossoms at all.

We found out from the pub employee that there are always one or two back-up bands at that venue and the main artist doesn't go on until 10:00 to 10:30. If I had known that, I never would have bought the tickets. I love the Gin Blossoms, had never seen them and was so phyched to be seeing them. Very, very disappointing. The tickets should have either mentioned the back-up bands or been accurate as to when the Blossoms would be coming on stage.

Gin Blossoms rocked the house... These guys still have it and continue touring, making crowds go wild. The music was awesome, a collection of some 90's hits as well as hits from the album No Chocolate Cake, with a few bass guitar solo's inbetween. Lead singer, Robin Wilson, knows how to interact with a crowd by getting them on their feet, hands in the area and passing around tambourines. His vocals take you straight back to the days when you turned on the radio listening to "Hey Jealousy." The fans were crowd surfing and Ronin was not afraid to come off the stage to high five his fans. Their experience touring shows and they appreciate the fans! Robin invited as many fans as could fit into the tour bus to head to the next stop as they were so awesome. The Xfinity Live center in Philadelphia offers an outside summer stage and it was a perfect night, despite a few rain drops at the end. The way the stage was set up gave everyone a great view and listening experience. Plenty of bars to pick up a drink as well. Highly recommend checking out the Gin Blossoms anytime you can for some great music and show!

This was the first concert I've been to in a few years. The show was AWESOME! The band sounds as amazing as ever, and the energy Robin has is great. He gave a sweet little girl a tambourine and she was thrilled. After he came out for an encore,he sang I Want It That Way acoustically,by himself, and the band returned for three more songs. Robin signed the tambourine and Scott gave her a drumstick. Robin was high fiving and talking to the audience the entire show and even came down into the audience (although sadly not on our side of the theater. )If you have the opportunity to see The Gin Blossoms DEFINATLY go,you will not regret it. My friend and I will DEFINATLY be watching to see whe they perform near us again!

Gin blossoms are giants, they are on a perpetual tour and they never disappoint. This concert was no different. They very rarely hit Canada and it showed to the crowd who seemed to vaguely recognize their hit songs and even though gin blossoms have been active through the past decade making new and fantastic music the lack of penetration through radio didn't help. On a Tuesday night, the first night of a week long festival, the crowd was sleepy and even the closing band (train) couldn't wake this crowd up. This was saddening because Robin, the lead singer feeds on the crowd. In summary, fantastic performance but I've seen better only because of the crowd didn't reciprocate.

This show was in the colony tx, and was during a festival saluting our veterans. There was no charge for entry to the festival or the concert, so i wasnt sure what to expect.. We arrived 30 mins. prior to the show, and very few people were there. Now, I started to be concerned about the quality of the show. We set our chairs on the front row and waited for the show.. WOW!!!! Despite it being chilly, windy, and outdoors, the show was awesome!! They played for 1 1/2 hours and had an enormous amount of interaction with the crowd. This was my first time to see them, but we are going to tulsa, ok. next week to see them indoors. GREAT SHOW GUYS!!!

The Gin Blossoms were fabulous. They played all my favorites and then some. The new lead singer was a contrast to the original, but a good showman. Unfortunately during the performance of their last song Hey Jelousy, the lead singer took to standing on a chair which turned out to be flimsy and he fell through it, which was a surprise, being he looked all of 120 pounds. We were up front and saw the whole incident. Still it was a great show and he wasn't hurt so that was the main thing. It was certainly a memorable show and I would see them again!

Beyond amazing show at Maryland Live! Center Stage. This was my 4th time seeing Gin Blossoms and they consistently put on a fantastic show, start to finish. The energy level is always high, and Robin (lead singer) is one of the best I’ve seen at keeping an audience engaged. I started dancing my butt off during the first song and didn’t stop until they left the stage after the encore.

If you only know them for one or two songs, GO AND SEE THIS BAND. They will win you over with their whole catalog.

I saw them about three years ago and the lead singer was miserable as far as his demeanor on stage. It was obvious he didn’t want to be there. This time was a complete turn around. He was jovial and made the audience laugh. The fact that they started out with new material, played all of New Miserable Experience in order, Til I Hear It From You, a cover, and Follow You Down, I feel they played everything I wanted to hear! His voice still sounds just like the albums. Great show!

We had a great time the band has a lot of energy it was very great! They came on and played Lost Horizons one of my favorites and went on to play all their hits. Robin the lead singer has a way with the crowd where it gets everybody going. Both guitars rocked the house the drummer was hot and the bass player Bill Lean was totally on. I could see that show a hundred times and not get tired of it!!!!!

At least 133 killed in Moscow terror attack, Putin vows retribution

* A deadly shooting at a concert hall in suburban Moscow on Friday killed at least 133 people and injured over 100, the Investigative Committee of Russia said Saturday.

* According to the authorities, the shooters used automatic weapons at the site and used flammable liquid to set fire.

MOSCOW, March 23 (Xinhua) -- A deadly shooting at a concert hall in suburban Moscow on Friday killed at least 133 people and injured over 100, the Investigative Committee of Russia said Saturday.

The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) reported that the shooting occurred at the Crocus City Hall in northwest Moscow during a concert. According to the authorities, the shooters used automatic weapons at the site and used flammable liquid to set fire.

Earlier media reports put the death toll at 143.

In a televised address to the nation on Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin called the terrorist attack bloody and barbaric, vowing retribution.

Putin said all four gunmen in the attack were detained, adding that all perpetrators, organizers and financiers of this crime will be punished.

"Whoever they are, whoever guides them. I repeat, we will identify and punish everyone who stands behind the terrorists, who prepared this atrocity. This is a strike against Russia, against our people," Putin said.

The FSB said earlier that 11 people had been detained, including four who were directly involved in the terrorist attack, adding that the criminals intended to cross the Russian-Ukrainian border after the attack.

Vyacheslav Volodin, chairman of the Russian State Duma, said those behind this horrific terrorist attack must be "eradicated."

Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, stressed that those involved must face retribution, vowing to find and eliminate the attackers.

Following the attack, security measures have been tightened across Russia. Security checks at Moscow's airports and train, subway and bus stations have also intensified. Moscow and other regions have canceled all sports, cultural and other large public events.

State Duma Deputy Chairman Pyotr Tolstoy suggested the attack should not be viewed separately from the special military operation and Russia's confrontation with the "collective West." "This terrible day will only force us to unite stronger to fight until victory," he added.

In response to the tragedy, spontaneous vigils were organized in several Russian cities. Electronic billboards in many cities displayed images of candles in mourning of those killed in the attack.

A Moscow resident named Alexey said he was deeply shocked upon learning about the incident last night and hopes those responsible will be swiftly apprehended.

"I feel very heartbroken and upset," said Moscow resident Nadezhda, who lives near the site of the incident. "It's a horrific deed to launch attacks on civilians."

Analysts note that this is one of the severe terrorist attacks Russia has faced in over a decade.

Based on online photos and videos, political scientist Sergei Razgulyaev said that the attackers appeared professional, "like mercenaries."

Alexey Filatov, a veteran of Russian special forces unit Alpha Group, said that judging from eyewitness accounts and circulating videos, the attackers had long planned their assault, armed not just with firearms but also explosives.

Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, called for international condemnation of the heinous crime.

The White House said on Friday night that there was no indication Ukraine or Ukrainians were involved in the attack and that it would continue to monitor the situation.

Zakharova said the U.S. conclusions raised questions, urging the United States to share any reliable information with Russia.

Advisor to the head of the Ukrainian Presidential Office Mikhail Podolyak and the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry both rejected allegations of Ukraine's involvement in the attack.
