The tour celebrates the reissue of her 2004 best-selling album Careless Love , released last year through Craft Recordings in physical and digital formats and includes the acclaimed, original album, plus a previously unreleased live set, captured in its entirety in 2005 at Spain’s Festival de Jazz de Vitoria-Gasteiz. Both physical editions include recently unearthed photos, captured during Careless Love ‘s original release, plus new liner notes from the GRAMMY-Award-winning journalist Ashley Kahn, who recently spoke to Peyroux about the making of the album and her triumphant performance in Spain.

Released eight years after her debut, Careless Love marked a new chapter for the then-30-year-old Peyroux. Born in Athens, GA to bohemian parents, Peyroux spent her teenage years in Paris, where she found herself entranced by the city’s busking musicians. By 15, the precocious singer was performing alongside them in the city’s Latin Quarter and soon dropped out of high school to tour Europe full-time. When she returned to the States in her 20s, Peyroux settled in New York, where she was discovered — and promptly signed — by Atlantic Records’ Yves Beauvais, who co-produced her 1996 debut, Dreamland .

Immediately, Peyroux caught the attention of the music world, drawing comparisons to one of the greatest jazz vocalists in history, Billie Holiday. Yet, amid a whirlwind of buzz and critical acclaim, the young artist withdrew from the spotlight.

“When I came back to New York to make that first album I was like a deer in the headlights, “Peyroux tells Kahn. “It was my first time in a studio, my first time back in America. Then 9/11 happened. Then George W. got re-elected. It was like the world was going crazy. After  Dreamland  I had signed with Sony and I was trying to make my second record. I was broke and I didn’t know what I was going to do next.”

In addition to undergoing vocal cord surgery, the young artist entered a period of exploration — one in which she literally and figuratively found her voice. She set out across America to reconnect with her home country, but she also spent a lot of that time in self-reflection. “I put a lot of thought into what my career means,” Peyroux recalls, “what making a record and the follow-up tour represents — the kind of music I wanted to do and the amount of work that is involved.”

By 2004, she was ready to return to the studio. Peyroux signed a contract with Rounder Records and was introduced to Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock, Shawn Colvin), a legendary producer with whom she would form a long-lasting creative partnership. Klein’s sonically diverse background would also prove to be the perfect match for the singer-songwriter.

While Peyroux was introduced as a jazz artist, her influences spanned far beyond one genre — and the compositions selected for Careless Love showcased this versatility. From inspired interpretations of songs by Elliot Smith (‘Between the Bars’), Leonard Cohen (‘Dance Me to the End of Love’), and Hank Williams (‘Weary Blues’), to more traditional fare made famous by Bessie Smith (‘Don’t Cry Baby’), Billie Holiday (‘No More,’ ‘I’ll Look Around’), and Josephine Baker (‘J’ ai Deux Amours’), Careless Love offered something for every music fan.

In the studio, Peyroux was joined by a talented line-up of session musicians, including guitarist Dean Parks, keyboardist Larry Goldings, bassist David Piltch, trumpeter Lee Thornburg, and drummers Jay Bellerose and Scott Amendola. The laid-back Los Angeles sessions afforded the artist plenty of time to experiment and improvise with her fellow musicians.

Kahn writes, “Peyroux herself is in top, mature form on Careless Love — an apotheosis of that hushed, one-to-one affect she inherited from the likes of Billie Holiday, a stylistic bequest. By 2004, her way of conveying confessional expression was truly her own. She had developed an updated rhythmic pliability and an emotional depth that could explore the complexities lying beneath the surface of the songs.”

The album also included one original song, co-written by Jesse Harris (Norah Jones, Melody Gardot), ‘Don’t Wait Too Long.’ The lilting, jazz-infused tune, in which Peyroux croons “If you think that time will change your ways/ Don’t wait too long” could have certainly served as a personal anthem. It also became her signature hit. Released as a single, the song pushed Peyroux into the mainstream — topping the Jazz charts and appearing in soundtracks, TV shows, and national commercials.

Careless Love was a commercial and critical success as well, cementing Peyroux’s return to the industry. In the US, the album sold more than 500,000 copies in its first year — hitting No.2 on Billboard’s Jazz chart and, eventually, earning a platinum certification. Rivaling the sales of a pop record, the album was also a bestseller abroad, landing in the Top Ten in the UK, and earning Gold and Platinum certifications in Europe, South America, and China.

All About Jazz hailed Careless Love as “a moody, haunting masterpiece” and “a whale of a record. Peyroux’s voice is amazing — grainy, intimate, and unaffected.” No Depression noted that “a more self-defined Peyroux sound emerges — smooth, circling around midrange notes, energized, and built on her own smart reading of the lyric, not anyone else’s patterns.” The Guardian praised its “classily produced and coolly graceful set,” as well as its “intelligent choice of terrific songs.”

For the next year, Peyroux spent much of her time on the road in support of Careless Love , recording the majority of her shows from the soundboard. Among these dates is a standout set from Spain’s Vitoria-Gasteiz Jazz Festival, captured by Basque Public Radio on July 15, 2005. “You can hear how much fun we’re having, and the people sound really happy,” Peyroux reflects in the liner notes. “I think I was pretty nervous, playing in such a prestigious festival in one of these daunting, historic-looking places that was so large. At the time, a venue holding 2000 was a lot for me.”

In addition to material from Careless Love , the set also includes a rousing performance of ‘Walkin’ After Midnight,’ originally made famous by Patsy Cline and featured on Dreamland , plus a fantastic rendition of the Burton Lane / Frank Loesser pop standard, ‘I Hear Music.’

Originally issued via Rounder Records in 2004, the Careless Love reissue concept was initially planned as part of a special series commemorating the legendary roots label’s 50th anniversary in 2020. However, the release timeline pushed back due to Covid-19 related production delays, as well as working around the opportunity to fully celebrate the record with the Careless Love Forever World Tour. Says label producer Scott Billington, “a reissue of Careless Love seemed like it was long overdue. We approached Madeleine and her manager about the concept, and they brought up the exciting idea of a concurrent tour. Since there were no alternate takes or unissued songs from the original sessions, we began searching for a contemporaneous concert recording, and were lucky to finally find her 2005 set from the Vitoria Gasteiz Jazz Festival in Spain. We included everything from the set, presented in the same order as the performance. We were also able to find the original photo session for the album, by the late photographer Andrew MacNaughtan, to help create a special package.”

Peyroux adds, “I can’t tell you how grateful I am that we found this recording. For me, it represents the way I understood these songs at that time, how I was making music when I made Careless Love . It’s been more than fifteen years since that record came out, and I don’t think I’ve done a single concert that didn’t include at least two or three songs from it, and sometimes more. I think I’ve sung ‘Dance Me to the End of Love’ at every show. It’s part of me now.”

19 years later, Peyroux continues to record, perform, and challenge the confines of jazz through such albums as  Half the Perfect World  (2006),  Standing on the Rooftop  (2011), and  The Blue Room  (2013). In 2014, she released a career retrospective,  Keep Me in Your Heart for a While: Best of Madeleine Peyroux,  while in 2016, she released her eighth studio album and latest collaboration with Larry Klein,  Anthem.

Careless Love Forever World Tour

Madeleine Peyroux is the type of timeless and expressive singer who transports listeners with the emotionality of her performance.

She found mainstream success in 2004 when her album Careless Love hit and she’s celebrating that album and the songs collected on it in her ‘Careless Love Forever’ world tour, coming to Australia in March 2023.

Much like songbird Edith Piaf, Peyroux spent her teenage years busking the busy streets of Paris. Just like the ‘little sparrow’, Madeleine befriended the city’s street musicians and made its Latin quarter her first performing stage. Years later, Peyroux would cite iconic Piaf as an influence on her music and record a rendition of the classic La Vie En Rose , soulfully capturing the tune’s romanticism and melancholy.

Born in Athens, Georgia in 1974, Madeleine ‘grew up in a house filled with music’ and from an early age ‘instinctively realised music’s soothing power’ but it was her teenage years in the French capital that turned the childhood notion into an all-consuming vocation for life.

With her dusky, lyrical style and affinity for reinterpreting classic jazz, blues, and folk standards, vocalist Madeleine Peyroux is a highly acclaimed, internationally recognized artist.

Matilda Marseillaise

On a accompli quelques trucs.

“Music has the power to soothe the savage breast” asserted the poet William Congreve, articulating that the arts have the power to heal. A notion subscribed to by many, including acclaimed musician Madeleine Peyroux, who in 2017 harnessed the healing power of song for her Anthem album and tour (2018-2019).

In an attempt to address “our torrid political climate”, the artist employed her intimate, personal style of folk-pop songwriting coupled with spellbinding jazz driven delivery to convey thought-provoking reflections on country, self and everything in between.

Madeleine has spent much of her thirty-year career on the road, perfecting the live-performing skills she cultivated as a teenager busking in Paris. “Touring has become part of my make up” says the celebrated musician, “after years on the road, not touring would be hard for my psyche at this point.” The Jazz virtuoso is ready to travel “down the soothing path" again with her aptly titled trio The Dreamers.

Trios have “great dynamic presence” explains Madeleine, “leaving just enough natural empty space around every sound so as to allow the listener to fill that with dreams”. Starting in April 2020, Madeleine Peyroux, keyboardist Andy Ezrin (David Sanborn, Chris Botti, Joe Jackson, Christopher Cross) and drummer Graham Hawthorne (David Byrne, Paul Simon, Harry Belafonte) will weave their spell on audiences across America and Europe.

The three come together to create a lavish bed for Madeleine’s sultry brand of torch song vocals, and self-styled guitar playing. True to Madeleine’s musical style, they appropriate an eclectic list of cover songs and make them their own, as they effortlessly meld romance with modernism, early blues, jazz and rock and roll with the impressionists.

Audiences can expect to hear potent tunes from the politically-charged Anthem, classics from the artist’s extensive back catalogue, originals and much-loved covers. All performed to Madeleine’s trademark high-quality, laidback style, fine-tuned by the trio over the two-year Anthem tour. “With this trio I would like to soothe and be soothed” said Peyroux, "have fun, speak truth and feel good."

The Dreamers’ tour kicks off April 14th and 15th at the Hopewell Theatre NJ and Mahaiwe PAC in Great Barrington Massachusetts on the 17th.

The three will headline at the Exit Zero Festival on the 18th, before playing at The Kate in Old Saybrook, Connecticut April 19th, Jaqua Concert Hall in Eugene, Oregon April 23rd, and Montalvo Arts Center in Saratoga, California April 25th and 26th.

Confirmed California May dates include El Rey Theatre, LA May 1st,

JaM Cellars Ballroom at Margrit Mondavi Theatre, Napa, May 2nd, and

The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano on May 3rd

Live reviews

Sometimes too much value is placed on song-writing. Granted there’s nothing quite like the view into the writer’s soul you get when you hear a deftly written song, but many people seem to dismiss artists out of hand simply because they don’t write their own songs. It’s almost as if the music of any old bunch of clowns with electric guitars just means more than everything else because it “comes from the heart”, even when it clearly doesn’t. What these people don’t realize is that the skill and insight needed for an artist to truly embody and inhabit a song, whether or not it was originally written by them, vastly outweighs the skill needed to string three chords together and rhyme “maybe” with “baby”. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Jazz, where a lot of the great voices of the genre weren’t songwriters in their own right but it never really mattered. In the last ten years few names have emerged that truly rivalled the greats but one in particular could quite possibly join them, and that name is Madeleine Peyroux. Nowhere is how adept she is at interpretation more apparent than in her live performances. Songs by artists as diverse as Hank Williams, Elliot Smith and Randy Newman are all made her own with style and authority. Her voice, understated but clear as a bell, expresses more in a syllable than most vocalists can muster in an entire set. This is music that doesn’t need to shout to make itself known. In all, it’s quiet music. Quietly confident, quietly captivating, and quietly beautiful. A true must see.

Madeleine Peyroux’s voice is something really quite unique. Her Ronnie Scott’s show last year was, I think, the ideal place to catch her live, the intimacy of a club being favourable to the warmth and subtlety of her singing and arrangements. She had with her a rhythm section consisting of Jim Beard on piano and keyboard, Jon Herington on guitar, Barak Mori on double bass, and Jay Bellerose on drums, augmented by a string section led by Sylvia D’Avanzo. The band were absolutely impeccable, responsive, buoyant as Peyroux led them through some of her originals such as Don’t Wait Too Long as well as old classics by Leonard Cohen (Bird On The Wire, Dance Me To The End Of Love) and Ray Charles (Gentle On My Mind, I Can’t Stop Loving You). One of the most enjoyable things about her repertoire is the reworking and rearranging of many of these old songs - you feel like she strips them down to their very essence and then allows them to become something new and different. In an aside to the audience she quips that she has “three types of songs: love songs, blues songs, and drinking songs”. Although she’s self-deprecating, she has the audience’s full attention at all times, there’s no doubt at all that she’s a singer of rare talent, seasoned by many years of busking and leading a group of absolute top-notch jazz players. Definitely one for fans of Billie Holiday, Ray Charles, Leonard Cohen.

Madeleine's concert under the live oak trees in the quad at the College of Charleston was all I'd hoped for and really lovely. I've been a fan for a while so was very happy to see she was playing this year at Spoleto. It was a great 90 minute set with a nice selection of songs from her albums and new selections I liked. The bass player and the guitarist were fantastic in their own right. Good show.

The band was excellent and Madeleine clearly enjoyed herself. As for our appreciation of her singing we preferred the second set, where she took her guitar and gave us a more personal voice with less mannerism. We really loved the sound created at Musis Sacrum; the technician(s) and the hall are a perfect match. Overall experience: a surprising concert.

Sadly, my friend had an accident and could not come with and drive me, to see Madeleine Peyroux at St George’s, Bristol. I was devastated, as I have been a huge fan of her’s for about ten years now. I am sure she was amazing and I will definitely get to see her next time she is in England. X

Grande show!

Beautiful concert.

Madeleine Peyroux adress the audience in Portuguese (!) and that's something.

The concert gave us new and old songs, two Cohens and an excellent solo pot-pourri.

It ends with a Smile.

TOUR DATES & TICKETING arrow

The plaintive lilt of Ms. Peyroux's voice, the earnest charm in her inflection…caused a palpable balm to overwhelm the crowd… people were heard commenting, "Who IS this?!?" Where has she BEEN?... Ms. Peyroux brought roars of approval with each chorus she’d sing…"

Jazz Weekly

The Frontier Touring Company are delighted to confirm the first ever Australian tour of Madeleine Peyroux – the artist The Telegraph has called "the find of 2005". And despite being lauded by many media as an exciting 'new talent', this songstress has a story that stretches back much, much further than 2004.

Raised in Paris, Madeleine Peyroux (pronounced like the country Peru) cut her teeth as a street musician in the Latin Quarter. While visiting New York she was discovered by an Atlantic Records talent scout and in 1996 her debut album Dreamland burst onto the music scene on a wave of rave reviews. Time Magazine pronounced the album as "the most exciting, involving vocal performance by a new singer this year." Their effusiveness is illustrative of the many reviews Peyroux received that year.

However, at just 23 years old, the pressures of such sudden success proved too much for Madeleine, and plans for future recordings were scrapped.

Eight years on, and a matured Madeleine Peyroux has returned with her sophomore album Careless Love (Universal Music). A torrent of glowing reviews supported its release in late 2004 and the album jumped immediately into the Top 20 of the Australian jazz charts, remaining there today after an impressive 21 weeks. With a top chart position in the Top 5 Careless Love is currently riding high at #6.

Time Magazine ranked Careless Love the #2 album of 2004, while The Times wrote "her smoke-and-honey vocals – often compared to Billie Holiday – caress songs by Bessie Smith, Bob Dylan and Hank Williams. In a year that has seen the public bombarded with jazz-age nostalgia... Careless Love is the year's most beguiling and credible take on songs past."

Entertainment Weekly wrote, "in her capable hands jazz crossover gets a good name" and Mojo added "gorgeous... it's essential warmth will soothe the most cynical soul."

In her live performances, she reportedly adds a further dimension to already powerful vocals. The New York Times wrote of a recent show, "she emits a heady aura of places lived and music absorbed that floats around her like a ghostly multiple exposure of faces and voices from the past."

Don't make the mistake of missing Madeleine Peyroux in her first tour of Australia, performing in intimate venues in Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne.

Tickets on sale Tuesday 15 March.

Madeleine Peyroux – Australian Tour

American songstress Madeleine Peyroux will be embarking on an Australian national tour and New Zealand show in March 2012.

Peyroux’s last trip to Australia was as the special guest of Diana Krall in March 2010. The success of these shows has prompted her to play a string of headline dates much to the excitement of her Australian fan base.

Peyroux is touring in support of her fifth solo album Standing On The Rooftop, released in June 2011. This album showcases a different direction for Peyroux and highlights her ability to successfully reinvent her music; her latest album has elements of American roots sounds as well as her signature jazz inspired tone.

“… Ms. Peyroux … has branched out to refine an enigmatic, low-key personal style that is all her own.” – New York Times “While her vocals have certainly earned her many fans, perhaps her truest gift is her impeccable taste in material.” – Paste Magazine “The program is richly and elegantly painted with modern production touches even as its songs are rooted in the historical past of classic Americana.” – All Music Don’t miss your chance to see Madeleine Peyroux in concert as she brings her beautifully engaging act to Australia and New Zealand.
