Frequently Asked Questions

Do i have to stop for customs when i fly on a private jet.

Passengers on all international private charter flights will have to stop at customs. In certain countries, you may have to go through customs at a specific port of entry; for example, you must stop in Tahiti to perform customs checks en route to Bora Bora. You’ll also need to stop at the first port of entry when entering the U.S. from Mexico.

How much rest does the crew need before they can depart again?

Crew members are required to have a 10-hour rest period within each 24-hour cycle. The maximum duty day is 14 hours and must be followed by a 10-hour rest period at their hotel. When scheduling a flight, operators usually account for 12 hours of rest instead of 10. These extra two hours allow the crew time to get to their hotel, rest for the required time, and return to the airport.

How long does a fuel stop for a private jet flight take?

The average fuel stop takes 45–60 minutes. To speed up fuel stops, the operator, or pilots may call ahead, so a fuel truck is waiting for the aircraft on arrival. For smaller jets, a fuel stop can take as little as 30 minutes.

Will my private jet charter use the same airport as a commercial airline?

No. When you charter a private jet, you generally fly into a private airport. However, you could access the same airports as a commercial airline if you request to do so or if there are no private airport options. However, using a large mainstream airport like Los Angeles International or London Heathrow is often a bad choice for private jets, as flying to a smaller regional private airport is much faster and often makes for a more luxurious experience.

Is the age of an aircraft a safety factor?

Aircraft age is not a safety factor. However, if the aircraft is older and hasn’t been refurbished properly, it may cause flyers some inconvenience, such as overheating, faulty air conditioning, or faulty plumbing in the lavatory.

How much luggage am I allowed to bring on a private jet?

As a rule of thumb, each seat on a light or midsize jet equates to one passenger and one item of luggage. Each item of luggage is considered to be the standard 23 kilograms, or about 50 lbs. Large jets are designed for long-range trips, which typically involve longer stays, so you can carry more than one item of luggage per person.

Are there aircraft that are wheelchair accessible?

There are many aircraft that are wheelchair accessible. Most of them are large jets or above and have a straight aisle. If the jet has a zigzag aisle – like the Falcon 900 – it will be difficult to maneuver the wheelchair onboard the aircraft. You’ll also need the right type of wheelchair; many motorized wheelchairs won’t fit and can’t be collapsed. If this is the case, you’ll need a smaller, temporary wheelchair. Some aircraft operators have smaller wheelchairs that can be used. Please speak with your Paramount private jet expert to review your aircraft options.

Can I fly with large sums of cash?

Yes, you can. This is a common occurrence for many private jet clients. You can fly with up to $5 million in cash as long as you declare that cash when coming through customs. For domestic trips, there’s no limit and no need to declare it.

Which private jets come with flight attendants?

In the United States, large jets and above are required to have flight attendants onboard; in Europe, flight attendants are used on midsize jets and above. Flight attendants require their own seats. Larger jets and above have a jump seat near the cockpit for the flight attendant to use, meaning the attendant generally stays out of the cabin.

Which airports offer ramp access, allowing the client to drive their car right up to their private jet?

Private jet clients can often have a limo drive them right up to the private jet, or even drive their own car to the plane. That said, different airports have different policies, and some may not offer ramp access. Please speak with your Paramount Aviation Advisor to review your options for a given trip.

Do private jets come with Wi-Fi?

Many private jets do have Wi-Fi, and it’s increasingly available free of charge on U.S. domestic flights. On international flights, prices range from $3.00-$8.50 USD per megabyte used. This means that opening up social media sites that are rich in images and videos could quickly cost you $20 – and downloading a feature-length movie could cost thousands!

When is on-demand private jet charter better than buying a block of hours?

Private jet charter can be a lot cheaper than buying a block of hours for a one-way flight, as you can access floating fleets or an empty leg to reduce the cost. With a block of hours, the price covers a round trip. If you only fly one-way, you are effectively paying double.

What is a carbon-neutral flight?

Every aircraft burns jet fuel and emits a certain amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. This can be offset via one of several carbon offset programs that allow private jet clients to purchase a certain number of carbon credits to offset the emissions from their flights. A carbon-neutral flight is one that offsets the carbon emissions it uses via a formal process.

Can I have a flexible departure time for my private jet flight?

Yes, it is possible to have a flexible departure when flying privately. Operators typically offer a 30-minute to two-hour window, but you can request a longer window as long as it doesn’t interfere with the maximum crew duty day or their next scheduled flight. Please confirm with your Paramount Aviation Advisor at the time of booking your jet.

When should I hire a Boeing Business Jet?

Boeing Business Jets (BBJs) have unique amenities that extend far beyond sheer size and are often equipped with 1-2 bedrooms and 2-3 bathrooms (one more of those bathrooms may even offer stand-up showers.) These airliner-based executive aircraft also feature tall or ‘stand-up’ cabins that are also longer and wider than more typical corporate aircraft.

How soon can I have a private jet ready from the time I call in the request?

Generally speaking, with as little as 4 hours of notice. However, we have had wheels up in as little as 32 minutes from the time our client called us to book the flight and had them in the air. It depends on a few factors, such as how long it takes for the pilots to arrive at the airport (generally, there is a 2-hour call-out time for the pilots), and whether the aircraft is ready to go at the airport with no repositioning needed. Our Jet Card members enjoy faster booking since they have funds on account and can confirm a flight with a simple email.

Can I access my luggage while in flight?

On most private jets, you will be able to access your luggage during the flight. That’s because luggage and passengers are situated on the same level. This is in contrast to commercial airlines, where checked luggage is stored in a cargo hold. On large private jets, luggage is often stored in a compartment behind the lavatory, which means easy access to your bags.

When are private jet charter landing and takeoff slots applicable?

A landing or takeoff slot is simply a small window of time in which your aircraft is scheduled to fly in or out of the airport. You will need a landing and takeoff slot if you fly to a high-density airport in the United States or one that is hosting a special event with a significant number of aircraft arriving and departing. If you’re flying internationally, you will need a landing and takeoff slot for all major European cities. Please check with your Paramount Aviation Advisor at the time of booking for a specific route.

What kind of in-flight catering is available on a private jet?

Other than the standard snacks and drinks, you can order local cuisine options for your catering on board. In short, anything that doesn’t need to be cooked can be ordered; hot food must be precooked and then warmed on board.

Can I bring pets with me on private jet flights?

Of course! Just let us know in advance. The majority of the operators and aircraft owners allow pets onboard. In some cases, a small cleaning fee may apply. That said, there are specific requirements that must be met when traveling with your pet, including making sure that all documentation and vaccination records for your pet(s) are correct and up-to-date. Dogs and cats must also be at least eight weeks old and weaned when traveling within the U.S.

Airport runways are defined by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) as designated areas of land from which an aircraft can take off and land. Generally speaking, runways resemble a wide road and can be made using either asphalt, concrete, or a mixture of both. Some aerodromes and smaller airports use natural surfaces like dirt, grass, gravel, sand, salt, and, in the case of Antarctica, ice.

Saga JET Programme

The official saga prefecture jet programme community.

saga private jet tour

Welcome to Saga Prefecture!

We want to celebrate the things that make living and working in Saga a fantastic and fulfilling experience for JETs and visitors alike. We don’t buy into the New York Times’ description of Saga as “ an obscure southern prefecture ” and a “ bucolic corner of southern Japan “. Even though 90% of Japanese people couldn’t point to Saga on a map, all of us happily call Saga home!

Where are we?

Saga is located in the northwest of Kyushu neighboring Fukuoka, Nagasaki, and Oita Prectures. It covers about 2500 square kilometers and has a population of around 810,000. It’s what the Japanese call 田舎 ( inaka = rural), a sprawl of mountains and beautiful rice fields interspersed with cities and towns. It has also been a major trading port throughout Japanese history.

Saga is lucky to be easily connected to major transport hubs like Fukuoka Airport, the Kyushu shinkansen, and many trains and buses allowing us to travel widely and freely. Saga is a beautiful prefecture and everyone who visits falls in love with it!

Saga is divided into three districts : Kito District ,  Sajo District , and Karamatsu District . Each district is its own smaller community within the larger community of Saga Prefecture. Within each district, there are  sempai  (senior) JETs who act as  District Representatives and assist other JETs living within that district. You can find more information on each of the districts on their individual district pages linked above, or under the ‘Welcome’ tab.

Each district comprises a number of different cities and towns, which may or may not contain JET Programme ALTs. Note that some cities or towns may not have any JETs listed. These towns/cities most likely employ ALTs, but via private contracting companies (such as Interac or KBS), rather than through the JET Programme. The map below shows the location and numbers of JETs within each district. Since Karatsu City covers such a large area, we have chosen to show the approximate town locations of JETs in that region. The distribution of JETs in terms of both numbers and locations may vary over time.

District Map

Map of Saga’s districts and location of Saga JETs in 2019-2020

Who are we?

Saga JETs are well known in Saga and the surrounding prefectures as a very socially active group, with many opportunities to get out and do things (see the events and volunteer pages). It’s an inclusive community among which you can certainly find friends from the start.

Coming to Saga not only gives you the opportunity to experience and learn about Japan, but also other countries, cultures, languages and life styles. In total, the JET community is composed of 30 ALTs and 7 CIRs,  from around 11 countries such as America, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Vietnam, England, Germany, Korea, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, South Africa, and the Netherlands.

The pages on this website are full with the great things Saga has to offer. The Three Minute Trip To Saga video below gives you more of an insight, including:

  • Karatsu Kunchi
  • Saga International Balloon Fiesta
  • Gatalympics
  • Sagan Tosu (local soccer team)
  • Saga Ballooners (local basketball team)
  • Yutoku Inari Shrine
  • Karatsu Castle
  • Yoshinogari Historial Park
  • Porcelain (Arita, Imari, Karatsu)
  • Saga Prefecture Space and Science center
  • Niji-no-matsubara (historic pine forest)

An exclusive look inside the $160,000-a-seat private Boeing 757 charter, with just 48 first-class seats

Zach Griff

Want to see whale sharks, Bengal tigers, lemurs, gorillas and the Big Five on a single three-week trip?

You could visit a few zoos, or you could see them all (as well as many more of the world's most exotic animals) in their natural habitats on a whirlwind, around-the-world journey with famed luxury tour outfitter Abercrombie & Kent .

Prefer taking in the world's cultural treasures or visiting multiple off-the-beaten-path destinations during a single trip? Abercrombie & Kent has a package for you, too. (It's called the Cultural Treasures: Around the World by Private Jet 2023 tour .)

Whether you're road-tripping or globetrotting, the suite life is always better. Download the free TPG App to upgrade your travel!

saga private jet tour

While A&K has long provided ground-based tours for nearly every type of trip you could envision, the company is (literally and figuratively) elevating the experience with its private jet journeys. These exclusive tours whisk you around the world in a private chartered jet, bringing you directly to the nature, culture and unique experiences that would otherwise require multiple flights, complicated transfers and a never-ending list of logistics.

For the right price, you can avoid all the hassles by joining an A&K private jet journey . While there's no great way to redeem points for these $160,000 (or more) adventures, you'll definitely get what you pay for — from the flights to the five-star resorts to the scrumptious meals, nearly everything is included with your fare.

saga private jet tour

Now, with ticket prices that cost more than 16 trips in Emirates' game-changer first-class suite , you might be dreaming about how you'll fly across the globe.

Here's your answer.

A very special Boeing 757

While Abercrombie & Kent offers a few private jet journeys each year, the outfitter doesn't actually own the planes. Instead, it wet leases a 22-year-old Boeing 757-200 from Icelandair.

saga private jet tour

As part of the agreement, Icelandair provides the flight crew, handles all the maintenance, arranges the catering and deals with all the flight-related logistics. Abercrombie & Kent tells Icelandair where to go, and the Keflavik-based carrier takes care of the rest.

The average traveler might not even realize that Icelandair is involved in the Abercrombie & Kent journey. You won't find any of Icelandair's Saga premium seats on board, nor will you see the airline's new (or old) livery anywhere.

saga private jet tour

From the large Abercrombie & Kent logo plastered on the front of the jet to the signature ampersand and on the tail, this jet is distinctly Abercrombie & Kent. Plus, with A&K-branded carpets, headrest covers and magazines, there's no question you're traveling with the luxury tour provider.

saga private jet tour

But diving deeper reveals a different story.

For one, the jet's TF-FIC registration code means that it's registered in Iceland. Turns out, the plane used to fly commercially for Icelandair (as well as for Thomas Cook and American Trans Air, to name a few) before being converted into a VIP configuration and leased out to Abercrombie & Kent, as well as other luxury tour providers.

saga private jet tour

While the 12 Keflavik-based crew members are fluent in English, you'll hear them communicating with each other in Icelandic. If you pick up the safety card, you'll see that the aircraft operator is actually Icelandair.

saga private jet tour

Although Icelandair may not offer any lie-flat seats on its commercial jets, it's a whole different story on this luxurious Boeing 757.

saga private jet tour

Featuring 48 first-class seats

As you ascend the air stairs attached to door 2L on the 757, you won't have to worry about whether you're turning left or right — the entire cabin features the exact same type of first-class seat.

saga private jet tour

(Since you'll be flying to smaller airports and parking in the general aviation area, I'd expect that air stairs will be used at most, if not all, stops. Note that this could pose a problem for those with limited mobility.)

saga private jet tour

The cream-colored, forward-facing leather seats are arranged in a 2-2 configuration across one large 12-row cabin.

For someone who's never been on a private 757 before, it was pretty incredible to see such a sparse configuration. In contrast, Icelandair's standard 757-200 cabin features 183 seats spread across 34 rows.

saga private jet tour

With just 48 first-class seats, the cabin felt airy and spacious — unlike any other Boeing 757 I've flown before. Dare I say it, but the spacious configuration felt somewhat like flying on a wide-body.

While you won't find some of the conveniences of a twin-aisle jet , such as large overhead bins, tall ceilings and wide cabins, this Boeing 757 is easily one of the most luxurious in the skies, and it offers quite a unique way to fly around the world.

saga private jet tour

That said, you will notice there is one big drawback of flying on a single-aisle 757: The fuel tanks aren't large enough to store enough fuel for the longest journeys, so some of the transoceanic legs require a fuel stop or two. On the morning of TPG's ground tour, the jet was preparing to fly from Seattle to Tokyo, but it needed to stop in Anchorage to refuel.

Spacious lie-flat seats

Though the plane doesn't feature private suites with sliding doors, the 2-2 forward-facing configuration gives each passenger an incredible amount of personal space.

saga private jet tour

Similar to how I was pleasantly surprised when recently flying Delta's used Airbus A350 (which features a forward-facing business-class cabin), the seats on this 757 are perfect for those looking to rest, recharge or relax. Plus, since many travelers on these expeditions are couples, the lack of privacy may not be much of an issue.

saga private jet tour

Each leather-padded recliner features a whopping 78 inches of pitch — roughly in line with what you'd find in most international first-class products.

Though Abercrombie & Kent markets these seats as first class, they'd likely be branded as business class by most airlines these days since they don't have privacy doors or feature direct aisle access. That said, the cabin is quite intimate, and many of the touches feel unquestionably first class.

The seats themselves measure 19 inches wide with a nearly 6-inch-wide armrest separating the seats. There's also a privacy shield that you can raise from the armrest if you're looking to zone out.

saga private jet tour

The intuitive seat controls are built directly into the armrest and feature a few customization options and a massage feature.

saga private jet tour

You'll find an ottoman built into the floor in front of you, similar to the one in Lufthansa first class . There's an exposed storage area under each ottoman, which is the perfect place to store your shoes after changing into the provided slippers.

saga private jet tour

A literature pocket filled with some Abercrombie & Kent magazines and other important information about your journey separates each ottoman.

The sturdy wood-grain tray table pops out of the armrest with the push of a button. It measures 23 inches long and 16 inches wide — large enough to enjoy all your multicourse meals or catch up on some work while on board.

When it's time to rest, one of the nine flight attendants will happily turn your seat into a fully-flat bed, which measures over 75 inches long when fully reclined. The open configuration without any constricting footwells feels much more spacious than what you'd find in most international business-class products.

During turndown service, the crew will place a thick mattress pad, plush duvet and down pillow on your bed, making it even easier to get comfortable.

There are four lavatories on board the aircraft — three near the back and one at the front of the plane.

Though none of them are oversized, they do feature some first-class touches, such as fresh flowers hanging from the mirrors, L'Occitane beauty products and terry hand towels to dry your hands.

No stone unturned

The first-class experience really takes off with the range of amenities offered along with the personalized service.

Waiting at your seat for each leg of the journey is a day pillow, Bose noise-canceling headphones, an amenity kit and a loaner iPad.

Due to supply chain issues, Abercrombie & Kent's signature amenity kits weren't available during our exclusive media preview, but we're told to expect an assortment of luxury health and beauty products inside.

While there are no inflight entertainment screens at each seat, a provided iPad connects wirelessly to an onboard server to stream movies and TV shows. The jet is also equipped with satellite Wi-Fi, which is available free of charge throughout the journey.

Each pair of seats features three universal power outlets and USB-A ports — two next to the individual reading lamps and one just under the literature shelf near the ottoman.

During boarding, the crew hands out a leather-bound menu etched with the Abercrombie & Kent logo. Inside, you'll find the food and drink menu, which is customized for each leg of the journey.

Lunch on the Seattle-to-Japan sector started with Dungeness crab, followed by either a grilled halibut or a lamb fillet as an entree, with a chocolate mousse for dessert.

A range of top-shelf liquors, wines, beers and ports is available, as is an assortment of soft drinks and juices. The 757 even features an espresso machine for all your caffeine needs.

You'll find the full drink menus in the gallery below.

These aren't just "regular" first-class airplane meals, either. There's an onboard chef who travels with the group and can customize any dishes to your preferences. Prefer your steak cooked rare, or to eat just before landing? Just ask.

During boarding, you'll receive a light bite consisting of a freshly dipped chocolate-covered strawberry, a macaron and a glass of Dom Perignon 2012.

Despite the plane being 22 years old, the cabin was as fresh as ever. I observed the crew using a dust buster in the aisles and in the crevices between each seat to pick up any small speck of dirt. It was clear that they were very excited about delivering a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the passengers.

Speaking of the crew, there are nine flight attendants and three pilots on these missions, for a 1:5 crew-to-guest ratio. Expect the flight attendants to get to know your name and your preferences throughout the journey.

The cabin is entirely first-class seating with one exception: the crew seating.

The crew travels along with the plane, and on longer sectors, they sit in regular economy seats that are spread throughout the cabin. There are two recliner-style first-class seats located just behind the forward galley, which is where the pilots rest during their breaks.

Bottom line

With Abercrombie & Kent's private jet trips, the journey matters just as much as the destination.

If you can afford the $160,000-a-seat expedition, you'll enjoy a first-rate travel experience that tops many of the world's best airlines. With an onboard chef whipping up five-star meals, spacious leather lie-flat seats and a no-hassles travel journey, you may never want to fly commercially again.

For everyone else, keep racking up the points for a trip in Emirates first class or Singapore Suites . These top-notch cabins may not be the same as a private Boeing 757 charter, but they're about as close as you'll come without the hundred-grand price tag.
