Dubrovnik is an Adriatic Sea cruise port and city in Croatia, and one of Europe's historically most prominent and popular vacation travel destinations. The city has population around 43,000 (metro over 66,000). Other major Croatian passenger ports (cruise and ferry) are Split , Zadar , Rijeka , Sibenik .

From Dubrovnik's Port Gruz (translated as "cargo port", locode HRDBV), regularly daily scheduled car and passenger ferries (operated by Jadrolinija) interlink the city with the Elaphites/Elaphiti Islands (Sipan, Lopud, Kolocep) and also with Bari Italy (4x weekly crossings, travel time 7,5 hours).

Medieval Dubrovnik (Ragusa) was founded by the Romans in the 7th-century BC. It was the second-largest independent city-state in the Adriatic Sea (after Venice Italy ). This picturesque town is on the Dalmatian coast and is a major resort vacation destination, best-known for its stone-made double walls and fortifications.

The perfectly preserved Old Town is unique with its steep cobbled streets, marble-paved squares, stone-made churches, palaces, fountains. Among the city's historic buildings are two monasteries, the Rector's Palace, mint house, customs house. However, the most popular tourist attraction are the city walls (visited by over 1,1 million people in 2016) running almost 2 km (1,2 ml) around the city. The walls are 4-6 m (13–20 ft) thick on the landward side, but much thinner on the seaward side. The system of turrets and towers was intended for protection.

The city-state Ragusa was under the protection of the Byzantine Empire (867-1205), the Venetian Republic (until 1358), the Kingdom of Hungary (until 1526) and the Ottoman Empire (until 1806), but remained self-governing as an independent republic. In 1808, Napoleon Bonaparte abolished its city-republic status. Following the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars, in 1815, the Congress of Vienna/Wien ceded the port town to Austria. In 1920, following WW1 (1914-1918), the town became part of Yugoslavia. During WW2 (1939-1945) it was occupied by the Germans and Italians.

The city's average temperatures are 9 C / 48 F (coldest / January) and 25 C / 77 F (warmest / August). The city is served by an international airport, located approx 20 km (12 ml) southeast of downtown. Bus service runs every 10-20 min, and is operated by all 9 bus lines. Bus tickets can be purchased at every newspaper stand, and also in the bus (at higher price).

From Dubrovnik cruise ship tourists can visit Cavtat, Trsteno and Ston.

Dubrovnik cruise port

Dubrovnik handles around 600 cruise ship calls and around 900,000 passengers annually. These numbers rank the cruise port as the Mediterranean's 10th largest (following Barcelona ,  Civitavecchia-Rome , Venice , Marseille , Naples , Athens-Piraeus , Genoa , and Savona ).

The port is among cruising industry's most regularly visited and unique destinations. Today. the city is at risk of being destroyed by an overwhelming number of tourists. In 2016, the cruise port handled a total of 529 ship calls and nearly 800,000 passengers. The number of calls in 2015 was 475, in 2014 - 463.

  • In 2016, UNESCO sounded the alarm by warning that the city's world heritage status is at risk, highlighting concern about “management of cruise ships” and “the maximum number of tourists in regard to the sustainable carrying capacity of the city”. In August 2016, in one day alone, the city (population around 43,000) was visited by a total of 10,388 cruise tourists. In 2016, the city was visited by over 5 million tourists, which was about 19% of the Mediterranean market.
  • In response, in January 2017, the city launched a plan to limit the number of tourists visiting Old Town to 8,000. Then were installed a total of 116 CCTV cameras to count people entering or leaving the complex. The situation is similar to that in  Venice Italy , where locals regularly protest against cruise ship tourism.

The city's UNESCO status was reviewed due to lack of both tourism strategy (focusing on cruises) and city management plan. Dubrovnik Port Authority is the main negotiator with cruise ship companies. However, there is an intention to let port's management to a foreign concessionaire. All signed for 2019 contracts limit cruise liners to 2 per day, and the number of cruise tourists to 5,000 daily.

Dubrovnik cruise terminal

In February 2016 was announced the concession contract for construction of a new cruise terminal in Dubrovnik.

  • The new facility is operated by "Dubrovnik International Cruise Port Investment" (abbrev DICPI). The company is jointly-owned by Global Port Holdings (GPH, Turkey) and Bouygues Batiment International (France). To allow cruise port operations, the state-owned company Dubrovnik Port Authority, granted a 40-year concession rights to the joint venture company.
  • GPH (world’s largest cruise port operator) handles annually around 5 million passengers in its ports worldwide. GPH operates facilities in such large seaports as Barcelona, Malaga, Lisbon, Valletta, Singapore, also several ports in Turkey.
  • Bouygues Batiment International (subsidiary of Bouygues Construction) was involved in the construction of Kai Tak Cruise Terminal ( Hong Kong China ).

Currently, Port Gruz has 2 quays - one with total length 810 m / 2657 ft (2 berths, completed in 2009, cost EUR 26 million) and another with length 230 m / 755 ft (1 berth, completed in 2011, cost EUR 8 million). The port's new quay has length of 400 m / 1312 ft (1 berth) and will be able to handle even the world's largest cruise vessels of RCI's Oasis-class.

Construction works in Dubrovnik port's Gruz area started in October 2016, with scheduled completion by 2018's end. By the agreement with Dubrovnik Port Authority, DIPCI removed existing buildings and cleared the area to build a modern cruise ship terminal, plus accompanying facilities - shopping mall, commercial multi-story garage (dedicated parking facility) and an international bus terminal (in the port).

The new passenger terminal is located just 3 km (2 ml) from the Old Town. The project's cost is around USD 100 million, financed by several major international and local banks.

Currently, Dubrovnik is also visited as tender port of call, which means additional (also smaller) cruise ships anchor in open sea (usually near Lokrum Island) and their passengers are transported to Port Gruz via the ship's tender boats.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to dubrovnik, the old city walls.

Dubrovnik is encircled by medieval ramparts connected by a series of towers. Strolling this vast wall gives you dramatic views down over the rooftops of the town and out to the glittering Adriatic beyond. You’ll also have a great view of the imposing Fort Lovrijenac, perched on a rocky headland next to the old city. After your walk, find your way through a tiny passageway to Buza, a rustic bar clinging to the rocks beneath the massive walls, for cold drinks and a chance to jump into the sea.

Franciscan Church & Monastery

The imposing complex of this 13th-century friary lies at one end of the Stradun boulevard and blends Romanesque and Gothic styles. Explore inside to see a collection of relics, chalices, and old paintings. Sit for a while in the beautiful cloister, a tiny oasis shaded by orange and palm trees, surrounded by slender, intricately carved columns. Drop into the old pharmacy, dating back to the 14th century, and buy some of the deliciously fragranced products to take home.

The Rector’s Palace and Cultural Historical Museum

This late 15th-century Gothic-Renaissance palace is where the rector of the city, who governed Dubrovnik, would live. Each rector was confined to the palace for a period of one month. Today, the palace serves as the Cultural History Museum. A collection of some 20,000 items including coins, statues, coats of arms, weapons, photographs, and textiles chart the history of the city from the 14th to the 20th centuries.

Things to Do in Dubrovnik

Stroll along historic stradun.

Stradun is the wide, elegant boulevard that bisects the Old Town of Dubrovnik, connecting the Pile and Ploce Gates, its smooth limestone gleaming in the sunlight. At one end is Onofrio’s Great Fountain, which has supplied spring water to the city since the 13th century. Stradun is lined with magnificent palaces, shops, and restaurants. Explore some of the shaded side alleys to find the most authentic places, and as part of your walk, visit the Franciscan Monastery and St. Blaise Church.

Ride the Cable Car to the Top of Srd Hill

For the best shot of the old city from above, ride the cable car to the top of Srd Hill, behind Dubrovnik. At the top, visit the Museum of the Croatian War of Independence, housed in the Fort Imperial. This fascinating display tells the story of the Balkans conflict from 1991 to 1995 via TV footage, documents, and photographs. Afterward, you could hike down to the city in 30 minutes with more time en route to take in those beautiful views.

Take a Ferry to the Island of Lokrum

On a hot day, jump on the ferry to sleepy Lokrum, a wooded island just 10 minutes by boat from Dubrovnik. Snooze on the rocks shaded by pine trees, wander through the botanical garden, and explore the ancient monastery. You’ll find a few cafés and restaurants, although locals prefer to take a picnic. There’s a large population of peacocks on Lokrum, adding an air of exoticism.

Top Food & Drink in Dubrovnik

You’ll find plenty of establishments serving authentic Croatian cuisine on your Dubrovnik cruise. At the most simple level, order a platter of Dalmatian ham and the salty local cheese and enjoy it with a crisp Pošip white from the island of Korcula. This makes an excellent lunch. You could also try the local specialty, a velvety squid ink risotto, which is jet black (check your teeth after eating this as your smile can be alarming for a few moments).

Pašticada is marinated, herb-stuffed beef, slow-cooked and served with pasta or gnocchi; you will find a lot of pasta on menus as Italy is not far away. Fresh fish is available everywhere, too, from sea bass and tuna to fresh oysters from the nearby town of Ston. Save space for dessert—look out for delicious dishes such as orange and olive cake, flaky apple or cherry strudel, and the ubiquitous gelato.

Culture & History of Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik was established in the 7th century as Ragusa, an independent republic that rivaled Venice for its riches. Dubrovnik was brought under the umbrella of the Byzantine Empire during the 12th century, and later was occupied by the Venetians, who completed construction on parts of the Old Town that stand to this day. In 1667, the city was devastated by an earthquake and lost much of its power. Unable to fight off the French invasion by Napoleon, Dubrovnik fell to the French and was bundled into Austria-Hungary in 1815.

The city became part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia after WWII, a period that ended after the 1991-1995 Balkans conflict, which resulted in the breakup of Yugoslavia. The city suffered significant shelling during a seven-month siege in 1991; many of the houses you see today have new roofs following the war.

Today, the city enjoys spectacular success as both a tourist destination and a film location. Despite the fact that they are massively outnumbered by visitors in summer, locals are friendly and welcoming. During your visit, try to embrace fjaka , a Croatian concept of doing very little in a pleasurable way and living in the moment.

Dubrovnik Cruise Port Facilities & Location

Ships dock at Gruz, in the modern part of Dubrovnik, just a couple of miles from the Old Town. Shuttles are available to take you into Old Town, or you can hail a taxi from the pier. The bus station can also be found within walking distance from Gruz. Ferries to the nearby islands (apart from Lokrum) depart from Gruz Port. While there are plenty of shops and restaurants in Gruz, the vast majority of visitors head straight to the Old Town. At the port itself, you’ll find restrooms and ATMs.

Transportation in Dubrovnik

Within the city walls, the only way to get around is on foot, as almost the entire area is car-free. Transportation options to head further afield includes public buses that run to and from Gruz Port, where ships dock, or taxi, of which there are many. Ferries to Lokrum depart from the Old Town Port, and the cable car to Mount Srd is just inland of the Old Town, around 10 minutes’ walk from the Pile or Ploče Gates.

Shopping in Dubrovnik

There’s no shortage of shops in Dubrovnik. Things to buy include traditional Konavle jewelry, Croatian wines, products made from local lavender, silk ties, and locally made footwear. Entire shops are dedicated to merchandise related to the many movies and TV shows shot here. For something more authentic, visit the Pharmacy in the Franciscan Church, where the products are hand made; the delicate orange blossom face cream, for example, is exquisite.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The official currency of Croatia is the Kuna (HRK), although you will see prices in Euros as well. It’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the exchange rate before going shopping. Most places accept credit cards, although you will need cash for shopping in markets. There are plenty of ATMs in the city.

There is a tipping culture in Croatia, but not a big one. Tip 10% for good service in a restaurant, and the equivalent of 5 or 10 Euros to a good tour guide.

Dubrovnik Port Guide

Dubrovnik is one of the most visited cruise destinations in Europe and the 10th largest Mediterranean cruise port. Cruise ships dock at the port of Gruž (“Luka Gruž” in Croatian), located in a stunning bay formed by the Lapad peninsula and the mainland. The port is located 3 km/1.9 miles (less than a 10-minute drive, or a 40-minute walk) from Dubrovnik’s old town where the majority of attractions are located.

Dubrovnik cruise ship terminal can accommodate up to 5 cruise vessels at a time, however, if it gets too busy, a ship may anchor in the bay south of the Old Town. In that case, the cruise passengers will be transferred to the Old Port via tender boats, from where they can start exploring the old town.

The port of Gruž features a modern terminal with facilities that include a visitor information office (make sure to pick up free city maps, brochures and info leaflets), luggage storage , tour operators and car rentals , a currency exchange office , ATMs and a bank , a pharmacy , supermarkets (“Konzum”), restaurants and bars .

The pier is very long and has two exits – the main gate, which is the largest and the closest to most amenities and services, and a smaller one which is dedicated to smaller ships and normally used for embarkation/disembarkation. Taxis and shore excursion buses are available on the pier, although some independent cruise excursions may meet outside the terminal (check your tour ticket/booking confirmation form for the exact meeting point).

The shuttle buses to Dubrovnik Old Town are normally provided free of charge or for an additional fee of approximately $15 round-trip (depending on the cruise line). The shuttle bus drop-off/pick-up point is at Brsalje Square close to Pile Gate (Porta Pile), which marks the entrance to the old town. The ride takes about 15 minutes one way. At Pile Gate, you’ll find a tourist information office.

The port of Gruž also serves ferries to the Elaphiti Islands in Croatia (Lopud, Šipan and Koločep) and the Italian port of Bari.

Dotted with traditional restaurants, shops, souvenir stores and historic landmarks, Old Town Dubrovnik is the first and foremost place to visit in the city. Enclosed by medieval walls overlooking the Old Port, with its marble-paved squares and narrow, cobbled streets, the remarkably preserved old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the beating heart of Dubrovnik. The best way to explore it is on a guided walking tour that will take you to the most prominent landmarks:

Stradun connects the eastern and western entrances to the city. At the western end, Pile Gate (Porta Pile) and the Franciscan Monastery with its bell tower mark the entrance to the old town, while at the other end, the 15th-century Clocktower dominates the skyline.
  • Ploče Gate (Vrata od Ploča) is the 14th-century eastern gate to the Old Town and features a statue of Saint Blaise, the patron of the city.
  • Franciscan Church and Monastery – this 1300s monastery is known for its historic pharmacy dating from 1317, which has been operating ever since (it’s never been closed). Over 2,000 recipes, bottles and other pharmaceutical items from the 15th and 16th centuries are still being kept and are truly fascinating to see!
  • Dubrovnik Cathedral – also known as The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, this marvelous 18th-century baroque cathedral features a triptych by Titian and artworks by Italian masters.

  • Onofrio’s Fountain – a circular fountain from the 15th century decorated with ornate, carved-stone masks. It is located at the beginning of Stradun, next to Pile Gate.

  • Maritime Museum – located within St. John’s Fortress, this museum displays nautical artifacts and exhibitions on the local maritime history.
  • Revelin Fortress – the 15th-century fortress located next to Ploče Gate, which nowadays houses a nightclub.

2. City Walls

The iconic Old Town walls were built between the 12th and 17th centuries to protect the town from pirates and foreign attacks. The walls are about 2 km/1.2 miles long and they include 16 smaller and larger towers. The largest tower is St John’s Fortress (aka Sveti Ivan Tower), which was constructed in the 16th century at the entrance to the Old Port, and nowadays houses the Maritime Museum and an aquarium. The UNESCO-listed Dubrovnik City Walls are about 25 m (82 ft) high and 3 to 6 meters thick, and they consist of four main corners/fortresses/towers.

  • Minčeta Tower is at the northwest corner at the highest point of the city, offering magnificent panoramic views.
  • Revelin Fortress sits at the eastern corner next to Ploče Gate.
  • St. John’s Fortress is located on the southeast corner and overlooks the old harbour.
  • Fort Bokar is a large 15th-century fortress at the southwest of the city that protects the Pile Gate and the entrance to the city.

It takes about 1 to 2 hours to make the whole circuit along the thick battlements, and there are hundreds of steps to handle on the way. You can start from one of the three entrances, and the ticket costs 33€. The more convenient and cheaper option here would be to purchase Dubrovnik Pass which allows you to access many more landmarks for the same price.

Make sure you wear comfortable shoes and a hat and keep hydrated, as there is no shade. Take time to explore the forts, towers, hidden corners and courtyards, and enjoy beautiful views of the city, Adriatic Sea and Lokrum Island.

3. Rector’s Palace

Knežev Dvor, or Rector’s Palace, sits south of Luža Square on Ulica Pred Dvorom street. This iconic palace originally dates from the 13th century and was later rebuilt in a Venetian-Gothic style designed by Michelozzo Michelozzi. Rector’s Palace was a seat of government and state offices as well as the Rector’s headquarters and living area when Dubrovnik was a self-governing Republic. Today, it houses the Town History Museum (Gradski Muzej) as well as a music concert hall. It’s not allowed to take videos inside the museum.

The visit takes about 1 hour 30 minutes and you’ll get the chance to explore the palace’s exhibition halls filled with historic artifacts, furniture, paintings, and lavish courtyards featured on HBO’s “Game of Thrones” series. The entrance to Rector’s Palace is included in Dubrovnik Pass.

4. Fort Lovrijenac

Perched on a 37-meter high cliff overlooking Dubrovnik Old Town and the Adriatic Sea, Tower Lovrijenac is also known as St. Lawrence Fortress and dates from the 11th century. The fort has a triangular shape and includes three terraces with stunning panoramic views. Constructed at the beginning of the 11th century, Lovrijenac played a major role in resisting Venetian rule and is nowadays a venue for concerts and theatre performances during Dubrovnik Summer Festival. The fort was also featured in the iconic “Game of Thrones” series.

You can access Lovrijenac Fort via paths that lead to two drawbridges and the gate to the fortress. It is open from 8:00 am to 6:30 pm and the entrance to the fort is included in the City Walls ticket and Dubrovnik Pass. The visit to the fortress only costs around 7€.

5. Game of Thrones Movie Tour

Dubrovnik served as a filming location for the legendary HBO series Game of Thrones, and that’s probably the most popular tour in Dubrovnik! These tours normally last for 2-3 hours and include stops at the most popular Game of Thrones filming locations. Below is a list of the most famous Game of Thrones filming locations in Dubrovnik:

  • Pile Gate – the most famous scene is from Season 2, Episode 6 when Joffrey was attacked on his way back to the Red Keep after Myrcella gets shipped off to Dorne. He orders everyone in the crowd to be murdered and a riot starts.
  • Pile Harbour – the beach in the bay close to Old Town walls between Bokar Fortress and Fort Lovrijenac has been used as King’s Landing’s harbour, more precisely in the scenes when Myrcella leaves for Dorne in Seasons 2, Episode 6 and then when Cersei waits for her to return in Season 6.
  • Lovrijenac Fort – a lot of scenes taking place in the Red Keep were filmed inside Fort Lovrijenac.
  • Dubrovnik West Harbour – right next to Fort Lovrijenac, this little pier was a filming location for the epic battle of Blackwater Bay.
  • Fort Bokar and City Walls – this fortress and Dubrovnik City Walls were often featured in the scenes of everyday life of people living in King’s Landing.
  • The Rector’s Palace – the stairway of the palace was featured in Season 2, Episode 6 when Daenerys visits the Spice King’s mansion to request ships to carry her army across the Narrow Sea, but the Thirteen rulers of Qarth reject her.
  • The Jesuit Staircase of Saint Ignatius Church and Stradun – one of the most popular scenes from Season 5, Episode 10 is the “Walk of Shame” of Queen Cersei. As punishment for her crimes which include adultery with her twin brother Jaime Lannister, Cersei is forced to walk naked in the streets of King’s Landing from the Great Sept of Baelor to the Red Keep.
  • Minčeta Tower – the famous tower offering stunning panoramic views was featured in Season 2 Episode 10 when Danaerys gets back from a walk and finds out that her dragons have been stolen.
  • St Dominic Street – Dubrovnik’s narrow streets were used in several market scenes in King’s Landing.
  • Dominican Monastery – it’s located on St Dominic Street; the scene where the protest speech against the Lannisters was delivered was filmed on the circular steps in front of the monastery.
  • Ploče Gate – the eastern entrance to the Old Town is most famous for the scene when Cersei returns to the Red Keep after her walk of shame.
  • Gradac Park – the historic park with scenic views of Lovrijenac Fort and City Walls is located near the entrance to the Old Town. It was a filming location for the Purple Wedding feast where King Joffrey was poisoned.
  • Ethnographic Museum – a filming location for Littlefinger’s brothel in King’s Landing.
  • Lokrum Island – located just off the coast of Dubrovnik, the island served as a set for some of the scenes in the city of Qarth.

6. Dubrovnik Cable Car

Take in the most spectacular views of Dubrovnik from Mount Srđ , a low mountain perched over the walled city of Dubrovnik. The mountain has a height of 412 meters (1,352 ft) and is part of the wider Dinaric Alps. On top of it, you will find a large white stone cross and an old defense structure called Fort Imperial , built by the French in 1810 during the Napoleonic Wars.

To climb to Mount Srđ, you can take a taxi, hike, or take a cable car, which is definitely the most scenic and memorable way. The cable car ride takes about 4 minutes one-way and it will take you to a plateau offering stunning views of Dubrovnik, Lokrum Island and the Adriatic Sea. At the upper cable car station, you can enjoy food and drinks at Panorama restaurant.

The cable car’s lower station is located approximately 8-12 minutes’ walk via pedestrian sidewalks from Ploče or Pile gates. The third and quickest way (6-9 minutes walk) to access it is by walking up the stairs from Stradun towards Buža gate, and then across the parking towards stairs below the cable car. However, this road is a bit more strenuous because it involves lots of steep stairs. From the Dubrovnik cruise port, you can reach the cable car station by bus #8 or taxi.

The cable car is closed in January, February and March, and reopens on April 1st. You can check the opening times and updated prices at https://www.dubrovnikcablecar.com/

7. Hike Mount Srđ

If you prefer more adventurous activities, hiking is a great way to burn calories after a delicious local meal! Several trails can get you to the top – one of them starts next to the highway and will take you to the viewpoint and back for about 2 hours. Two trails start from the Old Town, just outside of the main Pile Gate. It takes about 3,5-4 km one-way to the elevation point of about 400 meters/1,300 feet, so make sure you wear comfortable shoes and keep hydrated.

Finally, if you don’t want to climb to the top, Mount Srđ has many other viewpoints on lower levels, mostly on the eastern side of the city from where you can admire the panorama of Old Port and the City Walls. The views are just incredible and offer spectacular views of Dubrovnik from different angles.

8. Lokrum Island

Nestled just off the coast of Dubrovnik, the car-free island of Lokrum is a perfect oasis to escape the bustling Dubrovnik old town. In this beautiful nature reserve, you can visit a medieval Benedictine monastery complex surrounded by botanical gardens planted with exotic trees, flowers, and bushes. Not far from there, the historic Fort Royal offers magnificent scenic vistas of the island and the sea. On the island, within the monastery complex, you can also find a couple of restaurants and snack bars, shops, public toilets and public showers.

Lokrum Island is a popular destination for swimming , kayaking and snorkeling due to its rocky coves and picturesque rocky beaches. Lokrum Main Beach , Dead Sea , and Galija are popular swimming spots. Lokrum Island is open from April to November. The ferry boats to/from Lokrum Island are organized from the Old Port, where you can check out the sailing timetables. They usually sail every 15-30 minutes depending on the season, the ride takes about 15 minutes.

9. Beaches and Water Activities

Besides all the incredible history and historic landmarks, the city of Dubrovnik is also known for a few nice beaches where you can spend a relaxing day soaking in the Mediterranean Sun. One of the popular Dubrovnik beaches is Banje beach , located east of the Old Town, a 15-minute drive from the cruise port. It is a lovely, relatively small pebble beach offering views of Lokrum Island and the Old Port. From the Old Port and Ploče Gate, you can reach the beach on foot in less than 10 minutes.

Other popular beaches in the area include a secluded Danče Beach , Bellevue Beach , Lokrum Beaches , Betina Cave Beach , Plaža Sveti Jakov , Uvala Lapad Beach , Copacabana Beach , and a few others, all located within a 10-15 minute drive from Dubrovnik cruise port. Keep in mind that the majority of these beaches are small coves with pebbles and rocks, so don’t expect wide sandy beaches. These scenic beaches offer great swimming and snorkeling opportunities, while the popular activities are also sailing and sea kayaking.

Time permitting, you can also book a day trip to the Elafiti archipelago (Elaphites), which consists of 14 islands along the Dalmatian Coast northwest of Dubrovnik. Three of them – Lopud, Šipan and Koločep, are the largest ones and make a popular day trip from Dubrovnik.

10. Food and Wine Tasting

When in Dubrovnik, you should definitely taste the delicious local food and a great selection of wines as the whole region is known for the production of premium quality wines. Make sure you try fresh seafood, cheese, prosciutto and meat dishes, or go for vegetarian and vegan options.

You can check out one of the countless eateries in the Old Town, or head outside the city to Konavle Valley , known for its award-winning wineries surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation and scenic vineyards. Top off your day with a sweet Rožata dessert, a Dalmatian version of crème brûlée!

The city of Dubrovnik is famous for its Game of Thrones Tours, but there is much more to the cruise port of Dubrovnik, Croatia, than King’s Landing. I have all of the Dubrovnik cruise port information in this guide.

I will show you what you can do when you dock at the Dubrovnik cruise ship terminal, how to get to the old town and Dubrovnik tour suggestions.

Croatia Travel Blog_Things To Do After Docking At The Dubrovnik Cruise Port

When your cruise stops at Dubrovnik , Croatia, you’ll find yourself in one of the most beautiful and historic cities in the Mediterranean. The Dubrovnik port itself is located on the other side of the City from the old part of Dubrovnik, a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

We visited Dubrovnik, known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” in August 2022 on Royal Caribbean’s Brilliance of the Seas as part of a Greece and Croatia itinerary , and we instantly fell in love with the City.

Croatia Dubrovnik Cruise Port - Sightseeing

When deciding what to do on a port day, I know it’s very easy to pick one of the many shore excursions available from your cruise ship.

But if you want a more authentic experience and to save some money as well, one of our biggest cruising tips is always to go it alone and book a custom tour from Dubrovnik .

We really didn’t know what to expect; as Game of Thrones fans, we were focused on the filming locations that turned Dubrovnik’s old City into Kings Landing. However, it turns out that the Dubrovnik cruise terminal has so much more to offer than a couple of Dragons and the Red Keep.

It’s fair to say we had our priorities all wrong and instantly changed our plans as soon as we very quickly saw what the City had to offer.

On any cruise port visit , time is always limited, so if you really want to get a good flavor of a City, it’s important to plan ahead so based on our experience, we’ve compiled a list of what we think were the five must-do things to consider if you want to see more than just Game of Thrones locations in Dubrovnik.

Skip Ahead To My Advice Here!

Visiting Dubrovnik On A Cruise Day

Croatia Dubrovnik Cruise Port - On the ship

When your cruise ship docks at Dubrovnik cruise port, you’ll usually be docked in the Port of Gruž, about 3km from the Old Town. Occasionally, some cruise ships will drop anchor close to the Old Town and will put you in tender boats and take you over to Old Port.

  • Is Dubrovnik Worth Visiting?

Getting To The Old Town – Dubrovnik Cruise Port To Old Town

When you get off a cruise ship, it is so easy to start walking and take things as they come. But in Dubrovnik, you really owe it to yourself to head to the Old Town.

Getting there on your own is very easy and will save you a fortune on cruise ships’ prices for their organized shuttle buses or excursions.

The bus station is directly outside Dubrovnik cruise port, and you can hop on the local No. 1 Bus, which will take you to the Old Town. Alternatively, if the queues are long, grab a Taxi, as we did. The taxi fare is usually around 10 euros.

We got off the ship at 9 am, and the traffic heading towards the Old Town was pretty solid. There is a one-way system, and the streets narrow as you enter the Old Town. What should have been a 15-minute trip turned into a 40-minute ride. Be prepared for some holdups if traffic is busy.

So plan your return trip to the ship very carefully.

Explore The Old Town

Revelin-Tower-at-Ploce-Gate-Dubrovnik-Croatia

Your Bus or Taxi will drop you off near the Pile Gate, which is the main entrance to the Old Town. Looking out to sea, the Old Town and Pile Gate will be on your left, and the majestic Fort Lovrijenac will be on your right.

The Old Town is a walled city built in the 16th century and is home to some of the most beautiful architecture in the world. As you take that short walk through the Pile Gate, you will be taken back in time. The Old Town is just absolutely stunning. It is easy to see why this is a UNESCO World Heritage site .

The first sight you will see in the Old Town is the Stradun, which is the wide main street that runs East from the Pile Gate to the Ploče Gate. The Stradun is lined with shops, restaurants, and cafes and is a great place to people-watch and soak up the city’s atmosphere.

My advice would be to make the best use of your time and visit some of the key sites within the Old Town first, before exploring the many shops and Restaurants.

Some must-see sights are the Franciscan Monastery, the Cathedral, and the Rector’s Palace.

The Franciscan Monastery

You’ll notice the Franciscan Monastery immediately on your left before you head properly down the Stradun. As you head in, a nice courtyard area with an old well is in the middle. The beautiful old building houses a library and a museum and is also home to one of the oldest pharmacies in Europe. The pharmacy is a must-see. It’s like stepping into something out of Harry Potter, except this is real!

The Rector’s Palace

Games of Thrones Locations Croatia - Atrium, Rector's palace, Old Town, Dubrovnik, Croatia

Once you have explored the monastery, continue down the Stradum to the bottom, where the Bell Tower and Orlando’s columns are located. Then, turn right and head up towards the Cathedral.

Before you reach the Cathedral, you’ll see the Rector’s Palace on the left. The Rector’s Palace is a Gothic-Renaissance building that was once the seat of power in Dubrovnik and is now a museum.

Dubrovnik Cathedral

When you first set eyes on Dubrovnik Cathedral, you will be amazed. But wait until you head inside. The place is like a museum, with stunning artwork, and the ceiling is just unbelievable. It’s just incredible.

There are many other things to see within the walls of the Old Town. Try and explore some of the smaller alleyways as you head back from the Cathedral. But remember to keep your eye on the time. Getting back through the Pile Gate can get very congested, and that’s before you get back into traffic.

Brands We Use And Trust

Walk the old town walls.

Dubrovnik old town city walls. Minceta Tower - Game of Thrones

If you are a bit more energetic and want to get your steps in, you should consider walking around the City Walls. If you are careful with your time, you can easily do this alongside visiting the Old Town itself.

The Dubrovnik City Walls were constructed over a 500-year period, mainly during the 12th and 17th centuries, and they are amongst the most extensive and well-preserved fortifications in Europe. Sadly, you can’t help but notice some new scars on the wall from the much more recent war between Croatia and Serbia in the 1990s.

Walking the Dubrovnik City Walls is a unique experience that allows you to see the city from a different perspective. There are stunning views over the Adriatic Sea, the Old Town, and the surrounding islands. The walk is not too strenuous, but it does involve a LOT of steps, so wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water.

The best way to walk the old town is to start at the Pile Gate. From there, the walk takes approximately 2 hours, and there are several places where you can stop and take a break.

Take The Dubrovnik Cable Car

Cable Car in Dubrovnik

If you really want to see the stunning views of Dubrovnik and the Adriatic Sea, you need to schedule a trip on the Dubrovnik Cable Car.

The cable car ride has been operating since 1969 and takes you up to the top of Mount Srd in just four minutes, offering breathtaking views of Dubrovnik, the Adriatic Coast, and beyond.

To get to the Cable Car station, you can head out of the Buza Gate from the Old Town or jump on a number 1a, 1b, or 1c bus from Pile Gate. You can also walk it if you prefer.

Ticket prices for the cable car are 27 euros for an adult round trip, and Kids are 7 euros.

Note: the local currency is no longer Kuna and is now euros as of January 2023.

Once you reach the top of the Srd hill, you can explore Fortress Imperial, where you can find many details on the 1990s Croatian Wars of Independence.

If you have time, you can also enjoy a meal with an incredible view at the Panorama Restaurant. The restaurant offers a very varied menu, including traditional Croatian cuisine . There was lots of outdoor seating, but it was at a premium when we were there.

Visit Fort Lovrijenac

GAME OF THRONES SCENE DUBROVNIK - Fort Lovrijenac

This medieval fortress is often referred to as “Dubrovnik’s Gibraltar” and is perched atop a sheer rock overlooking the sea.

To get to the Fort, head down to the Old Port from Pile Gate. It’s pretty steep, so wear comfortable shoes and take your time.

Once you reach the very picturesque port, be prepared for another steep climb up to the Fort. There are around 200 steps to reach the fortress. My wife had sprained her knee a few weeks earlier and found the climb quite challenging. She agreed that the breathtaking views of Dubrovnik’s Old Town made it all worth it.

The fortress was built in the 11th century, and it has played a significant role in the city’s defense throughout history and has never been conquered. You can understand why when you look over the edge of the Fort’s walls!

One quick thing and: we got this advice from a local. Don’t be tempted to take a swim in the old port harbor. You will see kids and other tourists in there, but apparently, some wastewater is piped into the water. Also, many small boats come in and out of the harbor there, which can be quite dangerous for swimmers!

Relaxing on Dubrovnik’s Beaches

Now, if history, stunning buildings, and amazing views are not your thing, then you can ignore the previous four recommendations and just hit the beach !

We spoke to several fellow cruise passengers who preferred a more relaxing day in port, and these were the beaches that kept being mentioned.

Banje Beach

Best Beaches In The Mediterranean - Banje Beach, Croatia

Banje Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Dubrovnik, and for a good reason. It’s located about 15 minutes walk from Pile Gate at Old Town. The beach offers stunning views of the city walls and the harbor below Fort Lovrijenac.

Sveti Jakov Beach

Sveti Jakov Beach is an excellent option if you’re looking for a quieter beach experience. It’s a bit further out from the Old Town area, so it tends to be less crowded. It’s still easily accessible from the Cruise port if you want to head to the Beach for the day. The water is calm and perfect for swimming, and there are plenty of loungers and umbrellas available for rent.

Lapad Beach

Lapad Beach is located in the Lapad Bay area, which is much closer to Dubrovnik cruise port. It’s a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, and there are plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby. It is quite “pebbly,” though, so bear that in mind. Lapad Beach is about a 10-minute taxi drive from the cruise port.

Where do cruise ships dock in Dubrovnik?

The cruise port in Gruž is at a distance of around 2 miles (3km) from the Old City. Unless there are too many ships visiting Dubrovnik the Port of Gruž will be where your cruise ship will dock.

Although the cruise ship passenger can walk to the historical town (uphill and without much to see on the way), all cruise lines offer shuttle Buses to the Historical Town - the main attraction of Dubrovnik and a UNESCO Heritage Site . Some cruise lines will charge for this service whilst others offer it free. More about transportation below.

During the high season (July and August), the Port of Gruž may have as many as 5 cruise ships docked. When and if this happens other cruise ships will anchor south of the Old City and tender passengers to the Old Port .

The cruise traveler will have one of the most beautiful views of the medieval walls from the ship and a very pleasant boat ride as your cruise line tender passengers to the Old Port . The tender boat will dock next to the emblematic Fortress of St. John. Although many cruise travelers consider tendering an inconvenience, this can be advantageous as it will take less time to get straight into the main attraction that is the Old Town of Dubrovnik.

Naturally, the cruise traveler will not find by the tender pier any of the amenities expected in a conventional port. But, as you will be right by the southern end of the Historical Center of Dubrovnik, all you may need is within walking distance.

What's in Dubrovnik's Port of Gruž

The Port of Gruž is a large port with a very long pier and capacity for 5 cruise ships to dock. It has a modern terminal and all basic amenities and services.

Photo of Shops and Crew Center in Dubrovnik Cruise Port

Shops and Crew Center

Being a very long pier, there are two exit gates. The northernmost gate is the main one, the largest and the closest to most amenities and services. The southern gate has a small, modern terminal building and is only used by small luxury cruise ships or for embarkation/disembarkation. Both gates are within walking distance from the gangways.

Pier Main Gate

If you are booked on a shore excursion with your cruise ship, the tour buses will be parked right on the pier close to the gangway. If you have booked an excursion with independent tour operators the meeting point will be outside the exit gates. Make sure you clearly establish on which gate is the meeting point.

Cruise travelers may be disappointed to know that the typical City Sightseeing buses that are found in many European ports do not operate in the Port of Gruž. The good news is that are many other options to explore Dubrovnik.

Tour and Shuttle Buses at The Pier

All cruise lines offer shuttle buses to the Old Town, stopping on Brsalje Square, very close to Pile Gate, which is the main entrance to the walled city of Dubrovnik. Luxury cruise lines like Viking or Regent offer this service free of cost. But other cruise lines will charge for the shuttle bus. For example, in 2018, cruise lines such as Celebrity or Royal Caribbean charge €15.00 for one shuttle bus ticket (return). It may be advisable to check other (more affordable) transportation options like sharing a taxi or public buses.

Regardless of where your cruise ship docks the cruise passenger will find at the pier, right by the gangway, a good number of taxis offering transfers to the Old City (€ 14 Euros for the ride, one way).

Photo of Taxis Prices at Dubrovnik Cruise Ship Port

Taxis Prices

Taxis will also offer city panorama tours for € 50 Euros per hour, which is not exactly the best deal but convenient if you prefer private transfers. Uber does operate in Dubrovnik and can be slightly cheaper. The Editor used Uber in May 2018 and paid US$8.00 for the ride to Pile Gate. You can check Uber fares here . Learn More about Transportation and Basics of Dubrovnik .

Cruise Tip: if you walk outside the terminal, you will find that taxis offer a transfer to the Old Town for €10.00. These taxis also offer Panoramic Tours for € 50 Euros per hour (the same price as the ones you will find at the pier by the gangway). These taxis are parked right in front of the bus station - turn right if exiting the main gate, or left if exiting the southern gate. You can also book a taxi online ( www.taxidubrovnik.hr ) which can be advantageous if you are planning go out of town. Discover Hidden Jewels Outside Dubrovnik .

Outside the gated area of the port the cruise traveler will find the Main Bus Station . Turn right after exiting the main (northern) gate.

Photo of Main Bus Station in Dubrovnik Cruise Port

Main Bus Station

Buses #1a, #1b,#1c, #3 #3a and #8 will stop at Brsalje Square right by the Pile Gate. Buses #7 goes to Lapad (direction Babin Kuk). If docked closer to the southern gate, turn right and the bus stop is just a few yards (meters) away in front of the Travel Corner, where you can buy tickets. The bus ticket (one way) to the Old Town costs 15 kuna (around $2.00). You will need Kuna (the official and legal tender in Croatia) which is very easy to exchange or cash on a ATM right at the Bus Station.

Dubrovnik Heritage Line Bus by the Main Gate

Offered by the city's public buses the Dubrovnik Heritage Line runs everyday (when cruise ships are in port) from the Main Gate to Pile Gate (the main entrance to the Old Town). The journey takes 10 minutes and costs 15 kuna (around $2.00). Like with all public transportation in Croatia you will have to pay the ticket cash with Croatian Kuna. Obviously, the service runs as well from the Old Town back to the Port of Gruž.

If you are planning to rent a scooter, which can be both fun and an easy way to explore sites beyond the Old Historical Town of Dubrovnik, there is a shop very close by. Once outside the main gate, turn left and walk around 300 feet (100 meters). Around 1/2 mile (700 meters) south of the main gate, or just around the corner from the south gate, you may as well rent scooters at the Dubrovnik Travel Corner.

Money exchange and ATM's

The best place to exchange money or cash kuna is at the Main Bus Station, where you will find both a Money Exchange Office and the ATM of OptaBanka . Outside the gated area of the port, around 1/2 mile south, there is also an Information and Booking Center - Travel Corner - where you can book tours, rent a scooter, a car or buy local bus tickets. Many of these services can be booked online on its excellent website: www.dubrovnik-travelcorner.com .

On the building after the Crew Center, there are also shops selling typical Croatian products: wines, liqueurs, chocolates, truffles, and olive oil. Tips for Cruise Ship Passengers in Dubrovnik

Explore old town’s attractions at your own pace.

One of the top suggestions is to allow ample time to explore the enchanting attractions of Old Town without feeling rushed. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a treasure trove of historical landmarks, stunning architecture, and charming narrow streets waiting to be discovered. From the iconic city walls that offer panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea to the majestic St. Blaise Church and the vibrant Stradun promenade, there is so much to see and experience.

Wearing comfortable shoes is essential during your exploration of Old Town. The cobblestone streets may add character and charm to this ancient city, but they can also be uneven and challenging for those wearing unsuitable footwear. So make sure you pack a pair of sturdy walking shoes or sneakers that will keep your feet happy throughout your adventure.

Embrace Local Currency for Seamless Transactions

In order to fully immerse yourself in the local culture and make transactions smoother at smaller establishments, it’s advisable to carry some local currency (Kuna) with you during your visit. While many places accept credit cards, having cash on hand can be beneficial when visiting local markets, street vendors, or small family-owned businesses that may not have card payment facilities.

Exchange booths are readily available near popular tourist areas such as Pile Gate or Gruž Port where your cruise ship docks. It’s always a good idea to check exchange rates before making any transactions or withdrawing money from ATMs. By having Kuna in your pocket, you’ll have greater flexibility.

Stay Hydrated Under Dubrovnik’s Summer Sun

Dubrovnik enjoys warm Mediterranean weather during summer months, with temperatures often soaring high. As a cruise traveler exploring this picturesque city, it is crucial to stay hydrated and take care of yourself under the scorching sun. Carry a reusable water bottle with you and refill it at the numerous drinking fountains located throughout Old Town.

Don’t forget to wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from harmful UV rays. Seek shade whenever possible, especially during peak hours when the sun is at its strongest. By taking these simple precautions, you can enjoy your time in Dubrovnik without feeling exhausted or risking any sunburns.

Timing Is Key: Avoiding Crowds at Popular Sites

Dubrovnik’s popularity as a tourist destination means that certain attractions within the city can get quite crowded, especially during peak hours. To make the most of your visit as a cruise traveler, consider planning your itinerary strategically to avoid large crowds.

For instance, if you’re keen on exploring popular sites such as the Dubrovnik City Walls or Fort Lovrijenac, try to visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon when tourist numbers tend to be lower. This way, you’ll have more space and time to appreciate these remarkable landmarks without feeling overwhelmed by fellow visitors.

This vibrant marketplace is where locals gather to buy fresh produce, sample local cheeses and olive oil products while enjoying the lively atmosphere. Take a leisurely stroll through the stalls brimming with colorful fruits and vegetables, aromatic herbs, and locally sourced dairy products.

Engage with friendly vendors who take pride in their offerings as they share stories about their produce or recommend their favorite cheese varieties. Cruises that visit or depart from Dubrovnik sail in the Mediterranean. Perched on the Dalmatian Coast, this Pearl of the Adriatic is a medieval Mediterranean city known for its Baroque, Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Many tours visit the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and venture up to the ramparts of the city's iconic walls (with portions dating back to the 13th century) for panoramas of its splendid churches, palaces, monasteries and fountains. Dine and shop along Old Town's Stradun, or main street, before a tour of the Franciscan Monastery Museum and the Old Pharmacy, which has been operating since 1317. A filming locale for HBO's hit series "Game of Thrones," Dubrovnik offers plenty of guided tours for those wanting to see the settings of popular scenes shot in the show's fictional town of King's Landing. Other excursions include cable car rides for bird's-eye views and sea-kayaking adventures to the isle of Lokrum and a hidden beach cave.

Interactive world cruise map, home | cruise ships | port expenses | hints and tips, dubrovnik croatia port of call.

Since the upgrading of the port most ships will now dock instead of being anchored.

Only a very few ships will tender you to the Old harbor, right in the center of town, most others, the bigger ships, will dock at the end of the waterfront marina: the Gruz harbor (2.5 km from the old town) and provide shuttle buses to the Pile Square, from there it is only a few meters to the wall and old Dubrovnik.

Buses: If your ship doesn't offer a shuttle or you'd prefer to take transportation into your own hands, you'll find a local bus stop just outside each of the two the pier gates; look for numbers 1a, 1b and 8. 1,60 Euro one way. These buses can get very busy at times with school children etc. However, they have a better frequency than the cruise organized shuttles. The bus trip takes about 10 minutes.

Plenty taxis around at the Dubrovnik Cruise Terminal. 13 euros (set price and no need to change money) each way per taxi. If you travel with 2 or more people this often a good deal, as you avoid the busy lines when the shuttle buses return to port.

Sightseeing:

The old town is completely pedestrianized and easily small enough to get around on foot - some of the side streets are a little steep though!

Walk on the walls around the old town, great views! Warning - it's recommended to visit the walls during the early morning hours or the late afternoon hours, as it can become hot during the day! There are 3 entrances to the City Walls: on Stradun by the Pile gate, by fort Saint John's and at the Custom's House gate. Open:8AM-7PM. Entrance fee:150 KN (20 Euro) adults.

The Museum of Modern Art : Located near Banja's Beach, this museum welcomes you in from the sun to admire pieces by Vlaho Bukovac and other Croatian artists.

At the Pile Square you have a nice view of the harbor; from there you can stroll down the ramps into the old city.

The tourist office is at the point where the shuttle buses and taxis will drop you off.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Walking: You can get around by foot, mostly. There's really no reason to rent a car as the old city is pedestrian-only.

In the Old City, the Placa Stradun is the main pedestrian boulevard. You can access everything from the Placa. This is a walking destination and the smooth marble streets of the old town can be slick, particularly if it rains. Wear comfortable shoes. Remember this town is very compact, before you know it you are on the other side of town. The Placa is only 600 meters long and the old harbor is only 300 meters away.

Excursion boats: These boats depart for various excursions from the pier of the old harbor (at the end of the Placa) and are a good value. 12 Euro for a 50-minute trip is the going rate. The nearby islands you will pass, have various nudist beaches, so don't be in for a shock. It is part of the Croatian way of life.

Ride the cable car for stunning views. About 19 euro round trip. The cable car has been completely renovated after the damage from the Balkan war and is now also accessible for the mobility impaired. However to get to the cable car you will have to negotiate many steps, in this case, use a taxi or a bus. Bus 8 from the cruise terminal makes a stop at the cable car.

You can also consider a panoramic taxi tour (1 hour costs 50 Euro per taxi). These tours start straight from the cruise terminal. A nice trip which will take you to the same spot where the cable car ends. Most drivers speak good English. They will drop you off at the old city or at the cruise terminal whatever you wish.

It pays to compare your cruise line tours here

Nearby Places:

Banje Beach, (in the vicinity of the Old Town.). A well-located pebble beach. There's a concession part with an entrance fee, but also a public part which is always livelier and more relaxed. Great way to beat the heat in the middle of the town. Amazing view to City walls, Old Town Dubrovnik and the island of Lokrum. Beach volleyball, mini football or water polo. You can also enjoy lying on a deck chair and have a drink.

Shopping and Food

The main shopping street is Placa Stradun, but some of the best shops you can find in the in the small and steep streets around the Stradun.

Typical Dubrovnik products are: Konavle embroidery, silver, and gold jewelry, and wine from the Dubrovnik cellars.

The port itself is full of souvenir stands. There are no duty-free stores in port.

1 Euro = 7.50 Kuna. Starting on Januari 2023 the Euro will be the new currency in Croatia.

The exception to this is the walk around the walls but you can pay by credit card at the office near the Pile Gate. Credit cards are widely accepted even at souvenirs stands and food stores.

Currency Converter

Communication:

Language: Croatian. English well spoken.

There are quite a few cafes which offer wifi, some charge extra even when you order a drink. Some do not, inquire first.

The charge for wifi in port in the crew center is 5 euro for 3 hours or 10 minutes for 1 euro if you want to use an internet station. No other tariffs are available.

Opening Hours and Holidays:

Banks and post offices are generally open from 7AM to 7PM without breaks, and public offices from Monday to Friday from 8AM to 4PM. During the tourist season, post offices are generally open until 9PM, including Saturdays.

Shops and department stores are open from 8AM to 8PM without breaks.

Since 2009 shopping hours are not regulated anymore, therefore, most stores in tourist destinations are open 7 days a week.

Work from sea: Virgin Voyages brings remote friendly summer season pass to second ship

dubrovnik croatia cruise ships

Virgin Voyages is doubling down on its remote work-friendly season pass.

The adults-only cruise line is offering the Summer Season Pass on its Resilient Lady ship, which sails from Athens, Greece. This follows high demand after revealing the offer for Scarlet Lady earlier this month.

Passholders can take back-to-back cruises at a cheaper cost.

“No longer does working from home mean being tied to a desk or home office and eating leftovers for lunch,” Virgin Voyages CEO Nirmal Saverimuttu previously said in a news release when the first pass was launched. “With our latest WiFi upgrades, Virgin Voyages can now offer our Sailors the chance to see the world while working from a daybed at The Dock (outdoor lounge) and sampling Mediterranean mezzes, then hopping off the ship in between calls to make the most of our incredible ports of call.”

What are the terms of Virgin’s Summer Season Pass?

The passes for Resilient Lady are available in three stints of four cruises each:

  • June 30-July 28
  • July 7-Aug. 4

Destinations include the islands of Santorini and Mykonos, Dubrovnik, Croatia, Bodrum in Turkey, and Kotor, Montenegro, though exact itineraries vary by sailing.

How much does Virgin’s Summer Season Pass cost?

The pass starts at $9,990 for up to two guests, a savings of roughly 30% compared to booking four sailings separately. Passholders will stay in a Central Sea Terrace cabin with a private balcony.

They will also get complimentary wash and fold laundry service, access to Richard’s Rooftop – usually reserved for suite guests – a $10 daily coffee credit per cabin and more.

Can I work from a cruise ship?: We gave it a try

Premium Wi-Fi will be provided at no extra cost, handy for those who need to get work done on board. If you do, Virgin recommends posting up at the “in-cabin desk, your hammock, or in the Grounds Club” coffee bar, according to an FAQ section on its website.

Travelers can fill out an online form to book.

Where to eat and drink in dubrovnik, according to a local tour guide.

Old Town, Dubrovnik.

I first met Ivan Vuković , arguably the best tour guide in Dubrovnik, in the summer of 2022. It was peak summer so I was battling the tourist crowds vulturing around Old Town in peak heat, with a stomach bug in tow, and yet I managed to piece myself together for Ivan’s tour—which ended early at a pharmacy for me (unfortunately). From April through November, Ivan leads over 400 tours, meeting upwards of 2,000 tourists from around the world.

I returned in summer 2023 to redo my tour and give bustling Dubrovnik another chance. Ivan promised me I could find peace amidst the chaos, even when a cruise ship means the city is extra stuffed.

Rule No. 1, he notes, to avoid tourist traps: “If somebody is offering you a menu on the street you just do not go there,” he says. “When you see people rolling their eyes when you enter a restaurant or bar around 4 p.m. you stay there as this means it’s a local place.”

Vege Dub in Old Town, Dubrovnik.

Tourists often miss out on the street food, and there are lots of affordable eats, like Burger Tiger and Vege Dub (vegetarian and vegan street food—and don’t forget the smoothies)—two of Vuković’s favorite stops when seeking something fast and casual.

Here are a few places to bookmark for your next trip to Dubrovnik, via a local’s perspective, that will have you eating and drinking well—even if you’re only day-tripping.

Russia’s ‘Ivan Khurs’ Spy Ship Keeps Tabs On Ukrainian Radars And Missiles. No Wonder The Ukrainians Have Been Hunting The Ship For A Year.

3 body problem already dethroned in netflix s top 10 list by a new show, 150 million and counting how much trump s attorneys have paid for trying to overturn the 2020 election as john eastman faces disbarment, beach bar dodo.

Between the fortresses of Lovrijenac and Bokar, on Kolorina beach (which means “calm harbor”) is family-run Beach Bar Dodo—and one of the most authentic places in the city. “I like Dodo for snacks and a cold draft of local beer before swimming or directly after work,” says Vuković. It’s on the side of Sulic beach, perched atop a stone cliff overlooking the crystal-clear sea, so you can take a dip after lunch. If it’s super hot out be sure to ask for gemišt, a Croatian libation made with white wine and sparkling mineral water, poured over ice.

Cocktails at Café Festival in Old Town, Dubrovnik.

Café Festival

Catch the early morning sun and the best views in Old Town at Café Festival, located in the center of Stradun. “I drink my morning coffee and people watch,” says Vuković—a ritual before his first tour of the day. The café is open from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily and in the evening there’s live piano music. I’ve spent many mornings caffeinating and writing; it’s a special spot amidst the chaos that never gets old.

Dubrovnik Eat with Locals

This immersive dinner, hosted at Maria and Zlatko Papak’s house just outside of Old Town, where you sit at a table with perfect strangers who become friends after several glasses of local potions and elixirs, is a must. “I’ve known Marija all my life,” Vuković says. “It’s as local as it can get with tons of great food, great vibes, and you get to eat with great people,” he says. Experience peka, a traditional method of cooking meats and vegetables over open flames, as well local meats and cheeses, Croatian wine, and so much more. Vuković recommends canceling your plans the next day as the grappa and wine flow very freely throughout the night.

D'vino Wine Bar

A hidden wine bar in Old Town, D’vino is the best place to stay in the shade during hot summer months—and away from crowds. “They have fantastic wine flights to get to know Croatia through wine,” Vuković says. The bar focuses on small wine producers and family-run vineyards across the country so you can taste everything from Dingač, a robust red wine from the Pelješac Peninsula, to Grk, a wine made from the native Croatian grape from the island of Korčula, which makes excellent dry white wine.

Bouza mussels at Sesame.

Restaurant Sesame

Vuković notes to book a reservation at Sesame, just across from the Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik. It’s a quick 3-minute walk from the hustle and bustle of Old Town but a serene escape—and the menu is inspired by the freshness of seasons and Dalmatia’s culinary heritage. Gregada—an iconic fish and potato soup—entails sea bass, monkfish, prawns, shrimps, mussels, potatoes, wine, and onion. The cocktails are also a treat.

Glam Beer Therapy is just across from D’vino and a solid bet if you’re traveling with friends and there’s a great divide between who wants wine and who wants beer. “Craft beer is a big thing in Croatia,” Vuković notes. “Dubrovnik is home to Dubrovnik Beer Company , which produces local beer, and you can drink it in Glam with at least 50 different types of craft beer.”

Peppino' s Gelato

It’s always a good idea, especially during the summer months. “I refresh myself with strawberry or mango sorbets in the summer,” Vuković says. As for the artisanal gelato, which is super creamy and made with the highest quality ingredients, he keeps it simple with vanilla. I personally can’t not order carob and fig or ruby stracciatella if they’re on the menu.

Habitat Distillery

“Once upon a time my friend, Vlaho Carević, was a fantastic tourist guide—and now he’s a fantastic gin maker,” says Vuković. Carević’s new space is a concept store with a shop, workshop and tasting room. The gin is distilled with local ingredients like sage, lavender, and sun-kissed lemons from the garden. In the workshop, learn about what makes this gin so unique while crafting your own gin.

Seafood meets street food at Barba, where you’ll find locals and tourists lining up for some of the city’s most affordable and delicious bites. Vuković notes that it hits all the right marks: a trendy place, awesome seafood, inside the Old Town, quick, and cheap. “The octopus burger is my guilty pleasure,” says Vuković. The octopus is formed into a tasty patty with all the right toppings, housed in a squid ink-dyed bun. Order it and don’t think twice.

Fratellos Prosecco Bar Dubrovnik

Fratellos Prosecco Bar

Located in the historic Boninovo area, Fratellos, owned by three brothers, is the country’s first-ever prosecco bar. Boninovo is one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in Dubrovnik, known for its seaside cliffs and striking mansions and villas. “Locals love to watch the sunset from there,” says Vuković. Bubbles, views, and cigars...what’s not to love?

This cozy, charming and relaxed bistro is family-run, situated in a buzzy part of town just across from the bus station. Vuković notes it’s very affordable and a local hangout—and to order the black risotto with Adriatic cuttlefish. There’s ćevapčići, deliciously grilled minced meat, and a plethora of Mediterranean-inspired pizzas and pastas, and even a noteworthy burger menu.

The Western Mediterranean and the Adriatic

Cradles of Creativity

Packed with spectacular age-old landmarks and grand architecture, history comes thick and fast in the Western Med and the Adriatic. Journeying through Italy, wonder at the Colosseum and Pantheon - ancient reminders of Rome’s time as world’s largest empire - and wander Pompeii’s ruins, frozen-in-time after Mount Vesuvius’ eruption in 79AD. Against the bold blues and powder-white sands of the Adriatic, admire Slovenia’s Venetian-influenced buildings, the 4th-century pizazz of Split’s Diocletian's Palace, Dubrovnik’s dramatic Old Town, and Montenegro’s mighty forts. Whether genning up on the Knights of Malta in Valletta, discovering Napoleon’s childhood in Corsica, cruising along the French Riviera to Mallorca - where Arab and Balearic influences meet - or reveling in Gaudi’s masterpieces in Barcelona, you’ll be enthralled by history at every stop on this story-filled vacation.

Nice, France

The legacy of the Renaissance - a cultural movement borne in 14th-century Italy, which spread throughout Europe shaping intellectual life, art, architecture and the arts can be seen in abundance as you travel through the region’s most extraordinary cities. Discover the mind-blowing art of the Renaissance masters at Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Venice and Rome’s Galleria Borghese, a 17th-century villa which houses art, sculptures and antiquities. See first-hand why Michelangelo’s dreamy ceiling frescoes at the Sistine Chapel, and the famed corridors of Florentine mega-museum The Uffizzi deserve a spot on every art-lover’s bucket list. Just as compelling are Kotor’s Maritime Museum, which reveals the area’s fascinating seafaring history, and Malta’s National Museum of Archeology, which houses masses of prehistoric art and Neolithic pottery. Altogether more contemporary, is Cannes, renowned for its glamorous film festival.

A warm climate, fertile landscapes and teeming waters make for a rather delicious roll call as you sail through the Adriatic and the Western Mediterranean. Live La Dolce Vita - or sweet life - in Italy, where cafe culture reigns, and staples include fresh pasta, pizza, gelato , and lashings of olive oil and wine. Try pillowy-soft burrata cheese in Puglia, Sicilian eggplant and ricotta signature pasta alla norma , and classic Neopolitan-style Margherita pizza in its birthplace, Naples. Seafood’s a real Adriatic superstar; don’t miss Slovenian seafood rizota (risotto) - with a glass of local white rebula wine - and Dalmatian pašticada (beef stew) and rožata custard pudding in Croatia. Corsica’s signature civet de sanglier offers heartiness aplenty, while socca (chickpea pancakes) are a French Rivieran favorite, Marseille’s seafood bouillabaisse packs a liquorice-y kick thanks to fennel and  pastis , while Barcelona excels at seafood paella and crema catalana , a Catalan take on creme brûlée.

Alongside a serious hit of history and culture, awaken your senses exploring the region’s sun-soaked beaches, crystal-clear bays and breathtaking volcanic, forested landscapes. Take invigorating dips in Bari’s bays or sun yourself on Torre Sant’Andrea whilst admiring its dramatic sea stacks. Dubrovnik’s an adventure junkie’s dream; try cliff diving, kayaking, or scuba dive to see the Taranto wreck, and its quirky submerged tractors. Get your heart rate going hiking in Portofino Regional Park’s lush network of trails, and wonder at Mount Etna’s volcanic vineyards and lava pits in Sicily. For more natural thrills, travel to Corsica’s Scandola Nature Reserve to spot eagles soaring over stunning rock formations, or discover the Cuevas del Drach - Mallorca’s dragon caves - an underground lair full of limestone stalactites and stalagmites.

Insider tips Good to know in every situation

When visiting religious sites such as churches, mosques or synagogues, dress modestly, particularly in the Middle East. Opt for long sleeves, and keep your shoulders, back and legs covered. A lightweight scarf or sarong can come in handy as a makeshift headscarf or coverup, which can be easily thrown on at the last minute if it’s unexpectedly required.

Sprawling ancient marvels and Europe’s cobblestone-lined, often narrow city streets are best explored on foot. To ensure you make the most of things, pack a well-worn-in pair of comfortable shoes, and some trusty blister plasters, just in case.

Temperatures in the Middle East and the Med can really soar, plus there’s plenty of time spent on beaches and in the desert on this segment, so invest in a decent wide-brimmed hat, eco-friendly sunscreen, and keep a refillable bottle of water with you as you explore.
