Taylor Swift has descended on Southeast Asia, or one small part of it at least: All of her six sold-out shows are in Singapore, the region’s wealthiest nation.

Many of her fans in this part of the world, which is home to more than 600 million people, are disappointed. But the Singapore leg of Ms. Swift’s wildly popular Eras Tour , which began last weekend and ends on Saturday, is a soft power coup and a boost for the country’s post-pandemic economic recovery.

The shows — and the undisclosed price that Singapore paid to host them — have also generated diplomatic tension with two of its neighbors, Thailand and the Philippines.

Last month, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin of Thailand said publicly that Singapore had paid Ms. Swift up to $3 million per show on the condition that she play nowhere else in Southeast Asia. A lawmaker in the Philippines later said that was not “what good neighbors do.”

Singapore pushed back. First its culture minister said the actual value of the exclusivity deal — which he declined to name — was “ nowhere as high .” The country’s former ambassador at large later called the criticism “ sour grapes .” And on Tuesday, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong told reporters that he did not see the deal as diplomatically “unfriendly.”

But that was no solace to dejected fans.

“I sometimes think ‘When will I get to experience this?’” said Sherin Nya Tamara, 26, a Swift fan in Jakarta, Indonesia, who has liked the singer since 2011 but has never seen her perform live. “I was hoping there would be additional dates and that Jakarta would be included, but nope.”

At a time when Southeast Asian governments are dealing with tensions over the South China Sea and the fallout from a brutal war in Myanmar, among other serious issues, the controversy over Ms. Swift’s Singapore shows is “kind of refreshing,” said Susan Harris Rimmer, a law professor who has studied soft power in the region.

“It’s nice to see them arguing about something this fun, I guess, instead of really, deeply difficult things,” added Professor Harris Rimmer, who teaches at Griffith University in Australia. “But it does show there is tension and jealousy and rivalry.”

Ms. Swift’s concerts in Singapore, which follow her stops in Japan and Australia , would have been a big deal anyway. But they took on geopolitical overtones last month, when Mr. Srettha said at a business forum that Singapore had paid the artist as much as $3 million per show in order to guarantee that they would be her only tour stops in Southeast Asia.

Mr. Srettha said that he had learned the details of Singapore’s grant to the artist from the concert promoter, AEG Presents. Representatives for the promoter and for Ms. Swift did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Tuesday.

An exclusivity deal around a concert, a kind of noncompete agreement known as a “radius clause,” is standard practice in the music industry, said Susan Abramovitch, the head of the entertainment and sports law division at the international law firm Gowling WLG.

“That being said, this territorial exclusivity is more typically measured in hundreds of miles from a city rather than covering entire neighboring countries,” she said, adding that the scope of the Singapore deal was a kind of “Taylor-esque magnification” of the industry standard.

It hasn’t been received well outside Singapore.

Late last month, a lawmaker in the Philippines generated headlines by saying that he had asked the country’s Department of Foreign Affairs to discuss the exclusivity clause with the Singaporean government, saying that it had come at the expense of neighboring countries.

The lawmaker, Rep. Joey Salceda, said this week that he had raised the issue after realizing how difficult and expensive it would be for Filipinos, including members of his own staff, to attend the concerts.

“ASEAN’s core principles are solidarity and consensus,” he said in an interview, referring to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. “What happened? They even used their tourism board to block other nations.”

Asked on Tuesday how much the grant was worth, the Singaporean government did not directly address the question. But the Tourism Board and the Culture Ministry said in a joint statement that Ms. Swift’s concerts, for which more than 300,000 tickets had been sold, would likely “generate significant benefits” for the domestic economy.

Prime Minister Lee was also asked about the grant on Tuesday at an ASEAN conference in Australia. He said it had been funded by a post-Covid tourism recovery effort and that he did not see the exclusivity clause as being “unfriendly” to other countries.

“If we had not made such an arrangement, would she have come to someplace else in Southeast Asia or more places in Southeast Asia?” he said, speaking in Melbourne. “Maybe, maybe not.”

News of the regional backlash to the grant was reported earlier by The Wall Street Journal , The Diplomat and other news outlets.

Professor Harris Rimmer said that, financial incentives aside, Singapore is a logical place for Swift to play in Southeast Asia, in part because it is safe for young female fans and has excellent transport links to the rest of the region. She said Ms. Swift’s glamorous mystique also fits nicely with Singapore’s efforts to promote itself as the “glamour kitten of Asia.”

“I don’t think she needs Singapore’s money, at this point,” she added.

Some Swifties have made their peace with the singer’s limited itinerary in their region. Mostly.

Jose Bunachita, 30, a writer in the Philippine city of Cebu, said that he saw Ms. Swift in Japan last month, and that his 11-day trip there had cost around $1,500. “I had the time of my life singing my heart out,” he said.

Still, he said, “I also feel like it would have been more of a fun experience if a majority of the concertgoers had been fellow Filipino Swifties.”

Is this the end of the road for Lewis Black? America’s crankiest comic reflects on his final tour

Lewis Black prepares to take the stage and unleash his rage one last time in during his "Goodbye Yeller Brick Road" tour

Lewis Black is in his element. Onstage before an adoring audience, he merely says the name of disgraced former Rep. George Santos before the crowd erupts into laughter. The longest-running contributor to Comedy Central’s “Daily Show,” Black, with his signature raspy voice rising in anger as he stabs his finger in the air, later unleashes a torrent of F-bombs and razor-sharp commentary, ranging from the sad state of the world to the idiocy of politicians.

These are good times for the 75-year-old comic. Black’s most recent special, “Tragically, I Need You,” has racked up more than 1.3 million views on YouTube. Later this year, he will reprise the voice of “Anger” in the Pixar sequel, “Inside Out 2.” At an age when most of his comedic contemporaries have faded away, Black continues to sell out theaters and revel in live performance.

“The stage is where I feel free, very happy,” said a soft-spoken and reflective Black during a Zoom interview from his New York City apartment. “It’s where I feel the most comfortable.

“My primary relationship is with my audience and has been for a long time,” added the unmarried Black, who never had children. “They’re the ones that I’m seeing on a regular basis.”

So, it comes as a shock when Black announces during his act that his days of major touring are over. Turns out the road doesn’t go on forever, not even for the indefatigable Black, whose final tour, “Goodbye Yeller Brick Road” stops at the Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara on Friday and the City National Grove of Anaheim on Saturday.

The reason is simple: “I’ve got other things I want to do,” he said.

Black, a polymath who graduated with highest honors from the University of North Carolina in playwriting and earned a master’s degree from the Yale School of Drama, wants to write more books and plays and expand his RantCast podcast. He plans to produce more “Back in Black” segments for the “Daily Show,” which feature him riffing on the news of the day and railing against injustice and stupidity wherever he sees it.

One thing Black won’t be doing is following in Gerry Turner’s footsteps and going on “The Golden Bachelor.”

“The whole thing is reprehensible and disturbing and beyond comprehension,” Black said. “Grow up! You’re not supposed be out there. It’s time to be an adult, you know, do something adult.”

Lewis Black is still angry, but he’s happy to see you

On the road again

Over the course of his 35-year career, Black estimates he has done more than 2,000 shows, performing in every state. Some years he has averaged 250 or more concerts.

He has played for audiences in Europe, New Zealand, Canada, Hong Kong and Australia. Black has sold out renowned theaters such as Carnegie Hall and Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre , along with grungy clubs in college towns. He regularly stops in smaller places like Bismarck, N.D., and Rapid City, S.D., to “pick up another week of playing,” he said. “They are thrilled when you come to play for them.”

In his distinguished career, Black has written 40 plays and three bestselling books, released 12 comedy albums, won two Grammy Awards, starred in two HBO specials, and appeared in several movies and TV shows, including as Professor Crawley on “The Big Bang Theory.”

Black credits narcissistic, corrupt and delusional politicians and business leaders for providing him with a steady stream of material for his caustic wit.

“Stupidity is an easy target. And a lot of what I deal with is stupidity,” Black said. “As much as they love Reagan, he’s a f— idiot. As much as they love each one of these guys, they’re idiots.”

It’s not the tedium or the loneliness of the road that has led Black to quit touring. He has enjoyed seeing the country from the window of his bus, along with the bus itself. “It’s bigger than my first apartment in New York,” he said. Time on the road allows him to watch CNN, MSNBC and even some Fox News, along with reading The Week and the New York Times, searching for tidbits of hypocrisy and cravenness he can work into his act.

Chicago, Portland, Ore., and Seattle rank high on his list of favorite cities, as do Denver (“a great city with a phenomenal f— place to eat called Sam’s No. 3”) and Fort Worth, Texas. (“It has a nice center to wander around, and the Bass Performance Hall has spectacular sound. If the sound is good, it makes a huge difference.”)

Southern California, however, holds little allure for him, as much as he appreciates the audiences. His complaint will resonate with most residents.

“I’ve been sitting on the road for hours to get somewhere that’s supposed to be 20 minutes. Hours. It’s insane,” he said. “I don’t understand how people live like that.”

A colicky baby

Black grew up in the Washington, D.C., suburb of Silver Spring, Md. His mother was a substitute teacher, and his father worked as a mechanical engineer. Fittingly, Black was a fussy, colicky baby, a harbinger of things to come.

Raised in a Jewish household, he inherited his parents’ appreciation of education and his mother’s fondness for shouting. “My mother had this thing that if you yell at somebody, it means you love them,” said Black, a world-class yeller. “Not really healthy. But that was what I learned.”

The young Black wanted to become a playwright. For years, stand-up was a “side gig,” although he regularly snapped up new albums by comedic heroes like Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor and Bob Newhart.

Jo Koy poses for a portrait at his offices on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2024 in Los Angeles, CA.

Jo Koy grades himself on the Golden Globes, prepares for Kia Forum shows

Black honed his comic chops in the 1980s while serving as playwright-in-residence of West Bank Café’s Downstairs Theater Bar in New York. Besides overseeing more than 1,000 works onstage, including a few of his plays, Black emceed every show, trying out new jokes and routines along the way.

Audiences responded. By the end of the decade, he decided to make comedy his main focus.

Black struggled for years on about $500 a week but slowly found his comedic voice. In the mid-1990s, he began making semi-regular appearances on NBC’s “Late Night With Conan O’Brien.” That led to “The Daily Show” in 1996. The national exposure turbocharged Black’s career, giving him a level of success he never could have imagined.

As much as he likes writing plays and acting, comedy has brought Black the greatest satisfaction.

“I enjoy it all, but I’ve always liked stand-up the most because it allows me to write, direct and act,” he said. “And I’ve always loved that the ultimate arbiter of any performance has been the audience and not some schmuck producer or executive producer.”

Hard to believe, then, that he’s giving it all up.

Signing off with a smile

With the road nearly in his rearview mirror, Black said he’s signing off with a smile — sort of.

Over the years, the frustrations have mounted.

Black said he would have liked to have had his own Netflix special and a regular role on a TV sitcom, perhaps portraying the irascible-but-lovable character he’s perfected over the decades. Hollywood “never really got me,” he said.

Getting older also annoys the hell out of him.

“Anyone who’s over the age of 65 says that these are the best years of your life, you take the back of your hand and you slap them as hard as you can,” Black said. “Aging sucks. There’s nothing fun about it. Your close friends call and tell you they went to the doctor today. And then you just wait for the other shoe to drop. It’s just so awful.”

Finally, Donald Trump’s political ascendancy has spawned a new specimen of heckler. Loud, proud and aggressive, MAGA die-hards have occasionally interrupted Black’s show, much to his chagrin.

“In the entire time that I’ve worked as a comic, I’ve talked about every president,” said Black, an equal opportunity offender. “You liked me until I didn’t like your guy? Really? You jackass.”

The 60 best places to see stand-up comedy in L.A.

When he’s truly locked in and things are flowing, Black said he loses himself, with the audience pushing and pulling him to higher and higher comedic heights. These transcendent moments make it all worthwhile.

So, is this retirement thing for real? Does Black really plan to permanently park the tour bus? Or like the Who, Mötley Crüe and even Frank Sinatra before him, will he return to a city near you after the boredom sets in and the adulation wanes? Is this really, truly the end of Black’s days as a road warrior?

Black seems to have left himself a little wiggle room. He has told crowds that he might come back as an unannounced opening act. When pressed further, Black admits that he might enjoy playing arenas again, as he did in 2023 as part of Bert Kreischer ’s Fully Loaded Comedy Festival.

“I just hope that I’ve given people some relief from what they’re going through,” he said, “which has only gotten crazier as I’ve grown older.”

Andrea bocelli sings 'happy birthday' to tmz celebrity tour bus rider, andrea bocelli sings 'happy birthday' ... to tmz celebrity tour bus rider, exclusive 265 3/8/2024 2:12 pm pt.

TMZ Celebrity Tour bus riders were in a huge treat to end the week -- 'cause Andrea Bocelli was in town ... and he came aboard to put his pipes on display for one lucky rider!

We ran into the legendary Italian tenor out in the streets of Hollywood Friday -- where we happened to be doing our TMZ Celebrity Tour ... and one of our guides spotted Andrea and his son, Matteo, in the heart of the city, opting to hop off and interview him.

It made for a pretty epic conversation if we do say so ourselves. Check it out ... not only did AB give us the time of day -- telling us all about his upcoming projects -- but he also obliged us by coming on the bus and chopping it up with the riders.

The dude was super sweet ... and once he was on the bus -- he did someone a huge favor.

He didn't do "Ave Maria" here -- but Andrea did sing the next best thing ... and that would be "Happy Birthday" to one of our tour guide guests. Of course, phones were out for this one.

Just goes to show ... you really do see famous people on the TMZ Celebrity Tour -- and it's 100% worth its weight in gold, especially when awesome stuff like this happens. We'll admit ... even we were a little star-struck with Andrea's pop-in here, 'cause the dude's an absolute icon.

Waiting for your permission to load the Instagram Media.

Thanks for the visit, Mr. Bocelli!

Pauli Murray is the subject of the documentary My Name Is Pauli Murray.

This week, the Oscar gift bags were ... kinda weird, honestly , new emotions were on the way , and Part Two was worming its way to big money.

Here's what NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour crew was paying attention to — and what you should check out this weekend .

The Eurovangelists podcast , Maximum Fun network

Eurovangelists

The Eurovision Song Contest is coming and the best way to prepare is to listen to a new podcast called Eurovangelists , hosted by Dimitry Pompée, Oscar Montoya and Jeremy Bent. On one level, this podcast is "Eurovision 101." And if it was just that, I'd still recommend it to people, but I probably wouldn't keep listening myself because I'm good on the basics. But it is a lot more than that: It's enthusiasts enthusing with abject sincerity, but in a knowing kind of way. They're smart. They're funny. They're walking you through week by week, the songs that each Eurovision country is nominating for the finals coming up in May. They're sharing why they love this ridiculous spectacle without even a trace amount of gatekeeping. Everything about the podcast is specifically pitched to invite you to love Eurovision as much as they do — and as much as I do. — Glen Weldon

Strangers With Candy, Paramount+

Strangers with Candy

The theme song of Strangers with Candy has been stuck in my head because I am doing a rewatch of this show. It's a Comedy Central series that ran for three seasons beginning in 1999. It's created by a bunch of Second City alumni, including Stephen Colbert, Amy Sedaris and Paul Dinello, inspired by cheesy afterschool specials and PSAs. Sedaris stars as Jerri Blank, a former sex worker and drug addict who spent years as "a boozer, a user and a loser." And she returns to high school as a 46-year-old freshman. This show is surreal and definitely not P.C. Jerri's a full-on, unapologetic racist with a Confederate flag on her bedroom wall. But, my God, it still hits. I very much enjoy it. — Aisha Harris

My Name Is Pauli Murray, Amazon Prime

My Name Is Pauli Murray is a wonderful documentary about a lawyer, writer, civil rights activist and priest who I did not know nearly enough about. Murray was a generation ahead on many issues: She refused to sit in the back of the bus in 1940 — 15 years before Rosa Parks and the Montgomery bus boycott. Murray's legal writings were extremely influential on Supreme Court justices Thurgood Marshall and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She's a fascinating person and the documentary is really warmly told — I was transfixed by this illuminating film. — Stephen Thompson

On the Job video series, the dishwasher episode

Priya Krishna has a series on The New York Times Cooking YouTube channel in which she investigates different jobs within the world of food. She's visited a school cafeteria, a laundry where they wash linens for restaurants, and most recently, she spent a day with Dre, a dishwasher in a fine dining restaurant. She follows him throughout the day to look into the complexities of that job and how critical it is to keeping the restaurant running. If you expect this to be, "Oh, the terrible, hard life of a dishwasher," it's not that — it's about the skilled labor that he's doing and how important he is to the organization of the place. Dre is the most engaging, charismatic, absolutely transfixing guy and the video gets into what his aspirations are. In this series, Priya is doing work that I don't see a lot of other people doing and it makes me happy every single time there's a new installment. — Linda Holmes

More recommendations from the Pop Culture Happy Hour newsletter

by Linda Holmes

I cannot exactly recommend the sixth season of Netflix's Love Is Blind , but I do recommend the upcoming Pop Culture Happy Hour episode about it, which we taped this week. So do I actually recommend that you watch it (with an itchy fast-forwarding finger, let's be honest)? Maybe. Maybe so.

The latest podcast to successfully suck me in is Cover Up: The Anthrax Threat , which looks back at the long (and basically hapless) investigation into the anthrax letters that were sent to various people in the weeks after Sept. 11, 2001. There is a lot about it that I had forgotten, and it's fascinating to think about why.

As Oscar night approaches, I want to take a second to mention how really, really different the landscape is right now compared to how it was, say, 10 years ago. And what I mean by that is that the great majority of the major nominees are already available to watch at home — on services people may already have like Netflix, Peacock or Paramount+, or for rent through whatever VOD (video on demand) platform you prefer. That extends to a lot of the international, animated, and documentary features, too. For the most part, what you're curious about, you do have access to (other than, in particular, some of the shorts), and if you haven't caught up with some of the terrific nominees that aren't Oppenheimer or Barbie -- say Past Lives , The Holdovers or any of the docs — treat yourself.

In the entertainment world, so-called radius clauses are common, meaning that concerts are restricted to a certain locale. But Susan Abramovitch, the head of entertainment and sports law at the firm Gowling WLG, said they typically cover hundreds of miles, rather than entire neighboring countries. While Singapore has declined to share how much it paid for the exclusive rights to the Eras Tour, the prime minister of Thailand said publicly that Singapore had shelled out up to $3 million per show. (Swift is playing six sold-out shows in the country.) However, Singapore’s culture minister said the total was “nowhere as high.”

When The New York Times reached out to the Singaporean government, it would not say how much it had paid Swift, but a joint statement from the Tourism Board and the culture ministry noted that the concerts would largely benefit the country’s economy . And on Tuesday, at a conference in Australia, Singapore’s prime minister said he didn’t see the exclusivity clause as “unfriendly” toward other nations.

But those in neighboring Southeast Asian countries feel differently, especially as they’ll miss out on that same boost to the local economy. Joey Salceda, a lawmaker in the Philippines, publicly called out Singapore for restricting Swift’s ability to perform in the region, and he reiterated his feelings in an interview with the Times .

While Swift is liable to make headlines, it’s likely that she didn’t foresee her record-breaking tour causing international tensions.

PGA Tour: Scottie Scheffler proves Rory McIlroy right, rides new putter Arnold Palmer Invitational win

W e can’t prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Scottie Scheffler switched to a mallet putter for the Arnold Palmer Invitational at the suggestion of Rory McIlroy, but the motive is irrelevant.

What matters to the rest of the PGA Tour is that Scottie, like Happy , appears to have learned how to putt.

The result was a dominant performance on an arduous golf course by the clear-cut best player in the world who, when he makes putts, is as close to unbeatable as any player since Prime Tiger Woods.

Scheffler shot a bogey-free, 6-under 66 in the final round at Bay Hill Club & Lounge to claim his second API in three years and seventh career victory on the PGA Tour. He finished five strokes above Wyndham Clark (-10) and shot two strokes better than anybody else did.

For winning the fourth Signature Event of the 2024 PGA Tour season, Scheffler will earn $4 million (of the $20 million purse) and 700 FedExCup Points. Coffee for Scottie .

“Anytime you can win Arnie’s tournament, it’s pretty special,” he said.

Scheffler, the best ball striker on earth, arrived in Orlando ranked first on tour in Strokes Gained: tee-to-green in 2024 and 144th in putting. His frustration on the greens boiled over in February at the Genesis Invitational, in the form of an uncharacteristic meltdown .

“I’ve certainly been through my fair share of putting woes over the years, and I finally feel like I’ve broken through and become a pretty consistent putter,” McIlroy said while observing Scheffler from the broadcast booth at Riviera. “For me, going to a mallet was a big change, … so I’d love to see Scottie try a mallet.”

Lo and behold, Scheffler arrived for his next start, at Bay Hill, with a  TaylorMade Spider Tour X (a mallet), instead of his usual blade stick. People couldn’t help but wonder if the World No. 1 player was heeding the advice of the World No. 2. Scheffler claimed that his putting coach, Randy Smith, had already been considering the switch.

“Coach Randy joked about that at home, because he had already thought about it, and I think Rory just had said it in a way in which he used the blade for a long time and then he switched to a mallet, and that’s something that works for him,” Scheffler explained Friday. “I think, as a lot of good players out here know, something that works for Rory may not work for me, and something that works for me may not work for Rory. I did hear that he said that, and it was just kind of funny timing.”

Whatever the case, it worked.

Scheffler improved on the green with each round at the API. After a rocky Thursday and front-nine on Friday, Scheffler rolled in four birdies over his last six holes to card a 67 going into the weekend. On Saturday, he one-putted his final seven greens to erase a six-shot deficit and move into the lead.

On Sunday, Scheffler picked up where he left off — as cool as his mallet was hot. He opened with two one-putts to bring his career-long streak to nine. He added five more birdies. Overall, Scheffler pocketed his final 23 putts from within 15 feet. He finished fifth in the 69-person field in putting.

Scheffler attributed the rapid improvement to his mindset as much as the mallet.

“I played a good round of golf. Did my best to keep things rolling. Stayed in my little space,” he said. “It was a nice win.”

Or maybe, it was something else different…

Scheffler has four top-10s and three top-fives in five starts this season.

Scheffler — the first non-longshot winner of the season — hadn’t triumphed in a PGA Tour event since The PLAYERS Championship in 2023. He’ll look to roll his mallet-based momentum into a title defense at TPC Sawgrass, beginning on Thursday. McIlroy, meanwhile, shot a 4-over 76 on Sunday.
