Owned and operated by Sportsnet, a Rogers Media company, the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling is an annual series of events featuring the top-ranked curling men’s and women’s teams in the world. Total prize money for the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling increased to a total of $2.1 million for the 2018-19 season, which is split evenly between the men’s and women’s divisions.
Considered majors on the circuit, invited men’s and women’s teams must qualify according to predetermined criteria. The series started in 2001-02 and consisted of four events: the Canadian Open, Masters, National and Players’ Championship. A women’s division was added to the Players’ Championship in 2006.
Since 2012, Sportsnet has added women’s divisions to the other three majors as well as created two additional events: the Tour Challenge with two tiers and a total of 60 teams, and the Champions Cup closing out the season with all of the top winners on tour.
All matches are contested under the Curling Canada “Rules of Curling for Officiated Play” including the five-rock rule. Teams must wait until five rocks have been played before they can start eliminating rocks that are sitting in the free-guard zone (outside the house from the tee line to the near hog line). The five-rock rule is designed to generate more offence with an extra guard in play. This modified rule was introduced in the GSOC in 2011 for a test run and made official in 2014.
Games are played to eight ends. Each team has 33 minutes of thinking time plus two, 90-second timeouts.
Qualification for Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling events is based on the WCF World Team Ranking system.

World Men's Curling Championship 2022: Preview, stories, schedule, and stars to watch
Niklas Edin and Brad Gushue, the 2022 and 2006 Olympic champions, will lead favourites Sweden and Canada in Las Vegas, Nevada, from 2–10 April.
The Olympic curling season is reaching its thrilling climax, with the last major international team event of the year, the 2022 World Men's Curling Championship , set for Las Vegas, Nevada, USA from 2–10 April.
With the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 having concluded only just under two months ago, there will not be much overlap in teams between the Games and the upcoming worlds, with most attention on the two Olympic champion teams in the championship, led by Niklas Edin ( 2022 ) and Brad Gushue (2006).
They are two of 13 teams involved in the competition, which will see a single round-robin phase involving every team playing against each other team before a playoff segment.
World Curling announced in March that the team representing Russian Curling Federation would be excluded from the Championship; they were replaced by the Netherlands .
Read on to find out who to watch out for, what storylines could develop at the Orleans Arena , and how you can watch the World Curling championships.
Olympic champions Edin, Gushue lead reduced field
Of the 13 teams taking part, only three – those representing Sweden (Edin) , Canada (Gushue) , and Italy ( Joël Retornaz ) – also competed at Beijing 2022.
Gushue arguably had the hardest road to make it to Las Vegas. After returning from Beijing with the bronze medal, his mentally-drained team went into the Canadian national men's championships, the Brier , as a wildcard entry with no expectations. And despite losing third Mark Nichols to Covid, forcing them to finish the tournament with just three players , they somehow made an unexpected run to win their fourth national title to win selection as Team Canada for the second time this season.
Edin, a five-time world champion and the triple defending champion, has fond memories of the Orleans Arena, having won the third of his world titles here in 2018. Between Gushue and Edin, they own the world number one and four rinks respectively, marking them out as clear favourites.
Retornaz, who had a disappointing Olympic campaign with Italy after his teammate Amos Mosaner had won mixed doubles gold with Stefania Constantini , is the third-highest-ranked skip in the field at world number 14.
Denmark, Norway, Scotland (who compete for Great Britain at the Olympics), Switzerland, and the United States are all being represented by different teams than those who wore the colours in Beijing.
Notably, Switzerland's Peter De Cruz lost in the final of the Swiss nationals, which doubled as the selectio tournament, to 2014 world junior champion Yannick Schwaller .
Beijing silver medallist skip Bruce Mouat was forced out of the Scottish national championships by virtue of the event's scheduling clashing with the team's return to Great Britain from China, meaning Scotland will instead be represented by Kyle Waddell 's rink.
And Korey Dropkin , the third-ranked American rink on the world rankings, will wear the Stars-and-Stripes instead of veteran John Shuster , the 2018 Olympic champion, who misses out on representing the U.S. at a major championships for just the second time in eight years (2018 Worlds).
Schwaller and Dropkin will both be hoping to make their marks on the world stage, while Retornaz will no doubt see this as his team's best chance for a world medal.
Moments | Beijing 2022 - Bronze Medal - Men's Curling - Canada Team
Fond farewell for current team gushue.
This will be the final competition as a foursome for the current Team Gushue, made up of Gushue, Nichols, second Brett Gallant , and lead Geoff Walker , who play out of St John's, Newfoundland.
After their difficult path to the podium in Beijing, which ended with an emotional bronze medal, they set themselves no expectations for the Brier. There, they completed an unbeaten round-robin stage with eight wins, becoming the first Canadian men's team to compete in both the Olympic Games and national championship in the same season.
Then came Nichols' positive Covid test, a loss in a seeding game, and three tough wins to the title a man short. That qualified them for Vegas – and one final chance to go out on a high as a team of four, not three.
With Gallant leaving the team after the season to move to Alberta with his wife-to-be Jocelyn Peterman , this could be one last unexpected hurrah for this rink together as Team Gushue.
More records in store for Niklas Edin
Having finally won his much-longed-for Olympic gold medal in Beijing, Sweden's Edin finally has the full set of major career championship titles.
He'd already won seven European Championships and five world titles , but only had a silver and a bronze medal at the Olympic Games from his three appearances until Beijing.
"Winning three straight World Championship golds and five in total can never be a coincidence. Then you are dominant for a very long time. In our sport, we have done something completely unique, which is almost unbeatable," he said to Swedish television last April.
Last year, he also told Aftonbladet that winning Olympic gold would leave him "completely satisfied and have no demands left after that".
No-one else has won three world titles consecutively . A fourth would also be unprecedented, as would a sixth world crown, let alone in a season in which he finally achieved his biggest dream.
Only one problem. The last team to win world gold not named Team Edin? Team Gushue, in 2017. Breaking more records will not come easy.
Niklas Edin on how to raise your curling game
2022 world men's curling championship las vegas: schedule, format, and how to watch.
Round-robin play begins on Saturday, 2 April, with games at 14:00 and 19:00 local time (UTC -7 hours). From 3–8 April, there will be three draws every day, at 09:00, 14:00, and 19:00.
A full session-by-session schedule of games in each draw can be found here .
The teams in third to sixth place will play qualification games at 14:00 on 9 April, with the winners advancing to the semi-finals at 19:00 the same evening to play the top two teams from the round-robin phase.
The bronze-medal game is at 11:00 on Sunday, 10 April, with the gold-medal game at 16:00.
Games will be broadcast by World Curling's broadcast partners as well as on its partner Curling Channel , subject to rights agreements.

National sled hockey players try out curling
MINOT, N.D. (KMOT) – The U.S. National Para Ice Hockey Team took a break from the puck and replaced it with a curling stone.
Prairie Grit’s Head Sled Hockey Coach Christopher Douglas said this is most of the national team’s first time trying curling, even though they’ve seen it in the Paralympics.
He said this season was also the first time Prairie Grit tried adaptive curling.
“It’s gone over very well, and the kids are absolutely excited to move forward, and we’ll see what happens next season,” said Douglas.
He said the idea to host the sled hockey national team came from members within the Curling Club and Minot Air Force Base’s curling league.

DraftKings preview: THE PLAYERS Championship
Golfbet News
Change Text Size
The PGA TOUR heads to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, this week for THE PLAYERS Championship. The iconic Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass will be the host and measures as a 7,275-yard, par 72 with Bermudagrass greens. For the second straight year, THE PLAYERS will carry a purse of $25 million, with $4.5 million going to the winner.
The field is quite obviously loaded, as 46 of the top 50 golfers in the world will be in attendance led, of course, by defending champion Scottie Scheffler.
Below, I have outlined three of my favorite DraftKings plays for the week.2
DISCLAIMER: I don’t need to go into detail on why you should roster Scottie Scheffler this week. He’s coming off a dominant win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard and is the best player in the world by a mile right now. He also appeared to have figured out his putting woes after switching to a mallet TaylorMade Spider Tour X putter last week. He’s expensive, but there are plenty of ways to fit him with all of the strong $7K options this week.
Hideki Matsuyama ($9,800)
Matsuyama has been on a nice run of late, winning The Genesis Invitational two starts ago, following that up with a strong T12 last week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Overall, he’s posted four top-22 finishes over his past five starts.
His short game that has been carrying him, as the 2021 Masters champ ranks fourth in the field in Strokes Gained: Around-the-Green and 23rd in SG: Putting over his past 12 rounds. His ball striking has been fine during this stretch as well, and when you factor it all in, only Scottie Scheffler, Will Zalatoris and Andrew Novak are averaging more Total Strokes per round than Matsuyama during this mini-run.
He will now return to one of his favorite courses on the TOUR in TPC Sawgrass, where the Japanese superstar has six top-25s over his past eight starts, including three top-eights. In addition, Matsuyama was also the first-round leader at the 2020 version of this event, before it was ultimately canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Matsuyama appears healthy to start 2024, and we should be striking while the iron is hot when he’s playing like this, even at this elevated price tag.
Max Homa ($9,600)
Very quietly Homa is rounding into form after a couple of subpar performances at the WM Phoenix Open and the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He’s coming off a strong T8 finish last week at Bay Hill, which was on the heels of a T16 at The Genesis. His ball-striking has not been in peak form, but his putter has, as he’s gained a combined 8.7 strokes with the flat stick over his past two starts.
We know that Homa is a tough-course maestro and someone you want to roster when conditions get difficult. His results at TPC Sawgrass are proof, as the six-time PGA TOUR winner has finishes of T13 and T6 over his past two starts at this event.
As a matter of fact, only Erik van Rooyen in this field has averaged more SG: Tee-to-Green per round at this iconic Pete Dye design than Homa has. Taking it a step further, if you look at golfers with more than one career start at this event, no one has gained more from tee-to-green per round than Homa.
He always seems to go overlooked when the world’s best players all congregate, despite boasting one of the highest floors you’ll find. Homa has now finished T16 or better in 19 of his past 28 PGA TOUR starts dating back to the 2023 Sentry while missing just four cuts during that stretch.
Erik van Rooyen ($7,300)
Van Rooyen is coming off another strong performance last week at Bay Hill, where he finished T25. Make that nine top-25 finishes across Van Rooyen’s past 11 PGA TOUR starts, a stretch that includes a win, a runner-up and a T8. Dating back 36 rounds in this field, he ranks 10th in this loaded field in Total Strokes Gained and ninth in SG: Ball-Striking.
The South African has made just one career start at THE PLAYERS, but it was a good one, as he finished T13 here in 2022. While it’s only a four-round sample, van Rooyen leads this entire field (by wide margins) in SG: Tee-to-Green and SG: Approach per round at TPC Sawgrass, averaging 2.79 and 2.83 strokes, respectively in both categories.
Van Rooyen is one of the hottest golfers in the world right now, and when you factor in his recent form, rolling stats and course history, he’s underpriced this week at just $7,300.

Even if you are not a massive fan of the USSR, Lenin or socialism, Gorki Leninskie on the outskirts of Moscow is still a great place to visit, as it is one of the few estate houses in Russia belonging to a middling-class of landowners which has survived today with its interior intact. Of course the reason it has survived intact is thanks to the fact that Lenin spent the last years of his life here and after his death it was turned into a museum. Before Lenin, the estate belonged to the Zinaida Morozova – the widow of the famous Russian patron of the arts Savva Morozov. After the death of her husband, Zinaida wanted to turn the estate at Gorki into a family home with her new husband Anatoly Reinbolt, and the famous Russian architect Fyodor Shekhtel was hired to carry out the reconstruction

- The Large House – this is the house where Lenin spent the last years of his life and where he died on 21 January 1924. You will see not only the rooms where he worked and relaxed, but also the rooms of his sister, the beautiful summer gardens and lots of items connected with Lenin and the former owners of the estate.
- Lenin’s Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost – this car was bought in England for governmental use. At first it was a standard car with four wheels, but it was transferred to a factory in St Petersburg for modification: its body was placed on caterpillar tracks and skis were attached to the front. Lenin travelled from Moscow to Gorki in this car, and made trips around the Moscow Region in it. On the night of 21 January 1924, after the autopsy on Lenin's body, Lenin’s brain was taken in this car to Moscow to be studied, and on the return journey the car brought back a zinc coffin.
- Lenin's Kremlin office and apartment – on 12 December 1922 Lenin worked for the last time at his office in the Kremlin and departed for Gorki. His Kremlin office and apartment was then sealed shut. During the presidency of Yeltsin the rooms were opened up and it was decided to transfer the furniture to Gorki Leninskie where the rooms were recreated. You will see here the actual furniture that Lenin used as well as other interesting artefacts, some of which date from an even earlier period: a map of the time of the Russian Civil War, materials for congresses and conferences, collections of statistics, and presents from workers and peasants sent from all over the country. The clocks in the office display the time of 8.15 when Lenin last left his office.
- Lenin Museum – this is the newest building on the estate. The museum was built in 1987 and represents a true monument of the late Soviet period. The museum was cutting edge for its time and features audio components. The centre of each hall has a cube of black glass which displays a six-minute long film. The museum may be dedicated to Lenin, but today it also serves as a museum of the technology and spirit of the Soviet Union in the 1980s.
- Burial of the Leader Monument - this is one of the most unusual monuments of Vladimir Lenin. Nowhere else is the founder of the Soviet Union depicted as a corpse being carried, after all “Lenin lived, Lenin lives and Lenin will always live". The designer is Sergey Merkurov who also was responsible for creating Lenin’s death mask. He was at the time the country’s leading specialists in death masks and also worked on death masks for Lev Tolstoy, Vladimir Mayakovsky, Mikhail Bulgakov and Maksim Gorky.
