The English dub of the video game features the voices of the actors who were cast for the Mobile Suit Gundam television series as with most games subsequent to the series dubbing, rather than the English cast of the films.

Story Mode [ ]

The story mode of Mobile Suit Gundam: Journey to Jaburo follows the events of the series while adhering to the films official. It contains scenes and events that were cut from the films, but it follows the film official due to facts like Sayla Mass obtaining a Core Booster, rather than G-Fighter and the retirement of the Guntank in favor of having a second Guncannon.

The game begins with the Zaku infiltration of Side 7, it shows this as well as Amuro finding the Gundam. In the first level he fights three Zaku IIs, only two of which need to be destroyed. An cutscene depicting briefly the events from Side 7 all the way to the White Base's arrival on Earth follows then players are thrust into a battle against the forces of Garma Zabi . The story mode continues in like fashion on the Earth segment of the series, avoiding aquatic combat and depicting mainly the more important battles of the series. Cutscenes tend to be lengthy summaries of the events of the series and have crisp animation, though they follow the animation style of the original series.

The nine missions included in Story Mode are nearly all named after episodes of the series and naturally involve in them the events of said episodes. The two exceptions to this rule are Cross of Sand, which takes place during episode 18 of the original series "Zeon's Secret Mine". The missions are as follows:

  • Gundam Rising
  • Winds of War
  • Garma's Fate
  • The Threat of Zeon
  • Cross of Sand
  • Ramba Ral's Attack
  • Soldiers of Sorrow
  • Across the Atlantic Ocean
  • Tragedy in Jaburo

After beating the story mode, players are allowed access to Tactics Battle Mode, in addition the normal CGI video is replaced by a stylized anime cutscene set to "Tobe Gundam!", the original opening theme of the animated series. The cutscene depicts the RX-78-2 Gundam along with the RX-79BD-1 Blue Destiny Unit 1 , RX-78NT-1 Gundam NT-1 and RX-79(G) Gundam Ground Type ; together with their respective pilots:  Amuro Ray , Christina MacKenzie , Shiro Amada , Yuu Kajima and Pierce Rayer on a hill with their MS in front of the White Base .

Tactics Battle [ ]

Tactics Battle mode is an optional mode available once story mode has been completed. In this mode you play either a Federation or Zeon pilot whom remains nameless and faceless. You begin at a low rank and with only one mission available to each side. As you successfully complete the missions available with the MS available your rank increases and more missions and MS are unlocked. Five Missions can be unlocked in total. The first three are standard attack or defense missions, they are available to both factions, though what your role is varies by faction. The last two are available only to the Federation. These are duels with the RX-79BD-1 Blue Destiny Unit 1 , and RX-78NT-1 Gundam NT-1 being piloted by Christina Mackinze and Yuu Kajima respectively. Christina compliments you during battle, whereas Yuu remains silent while in his duel Maureen Kitamura spurs him onward with encouraging remarks.

After each mission is completed a verbal assessment is given either by Matilda Ajan , Kergerenko , or Char Aznable. After this there are brief cutscenes featuring either Matilda or Kergerenko complimenting the player on their performance. If the player fails a mission, but does not retry it they will reprimand the player. As certain circumstances are met cutscenes with Char, M'Quve and Bright Noa are unlocked. There are also cutscenes featuring Christina, Shiro Amada and a White Dingo pilot when each allows use of their Mobile Suit. If the player continues fighting and raises their rank to Colonel in either faction, they receive a special reward video. On the Zeon route this is a video of the major members of the Principality of Zeon thanking the player for their service, on the Federation side it is video of the major female members of the Federation from MS Gundam, War in the Pocket , and Blue Destiny competing for attention as they enthusiastically thank the player.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Journey to Jaburo (PS2) Review

DesertRetro

Mobile Suit Gundam: Journey to Jaburo is an action game for the PlayStation 2 released in 2001 that isn’t often talked about in retro circles, but it will surprise and entertain you— if you let it.

The game consists of a 9 mission Story Mode (where you pilot the titular Gundam through the first 1/3rd of the TV series) and an unlockable Tactics Mode, featuring 5 extra missions you can play as a nameless soldier on either side of the conflict.

As a kid, the tactics mode provided hours of entertainment as I constantly replayed each scenario to unlock extra mobile suits and animated cutscenes.

Contemporary reviews criticized the 3D graphics, but for an early PS2 title I think they’re rather good. Sure, they’re not going to wow you. But they’ve held up better than some of the console’s other 2001 titles (I’m looking at you, GTA3).

Journey to Jaburo also took advantage of the PS2’s DVD format to include a sizable number of hand drawn scenes that looked better than the TV show.

The controls are admittedly clunky, but in a way that accurately conveys the feeling of piloting a three story tall robot. You may be frustrated at first, but you’ll get the hang of it once you master the lock-on and strafe techniques.

After all, If 10-year-old-me didn’t rage quit, I’m sure you’ll master it. A good comparison can be made between Journey to Jaburo’s controls and some of the PS2 entries into the Armored Core series.

Journey to Jaburo is not a difficult game, offers a lot of fan-service for those who love the Gundam universe, and can be enjoyed in either short bursts or long play-sessions. But, if Mobile Suit Gundam or mech games aren’t your bag, you might want to pass this one up. Either way, Journey to Jaburo is an affordable PS2 title , even in 2020, so it won’t hurt your wallet to add it to your shelf.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Journey to Jaburo Review

Mobile Suit Gundam is enjoyable despite its flaws, and it offers those who have never seen the original television series or its movie adaptation a condensed version of a classic part of anime history.

By Gerald Villoria on July 27, 2001 at 8:00PM PDT

Sunrise's television series that started the Gundam phenomenon was Mobile Suit Gundam, which debuted in 1979 for Japanese audiences. Due to the extreme popularity of its recent successors, Gundam Wing and Endless Waltz, the original Mobile Suit Gundam episodes will be aired stateside for the first time, to a captivated US audience that can't seem to get enough Gundam. Mobile Suit Gundam: Journey to Jaburo, Bandai's latest PS2 mobile suit simulator, is a direct translation of this original television series, and it attempts to capture its epic storyline while introducing engaging, mission-based gameplay.

Mobile Suit Gundam takes place in the year Universal Century 0079. The principality of Zeon has invented a gigantic human-shaped weapon called the mobile suit, and it is fighting a bitter war against the Earth Federation for independence. During a conflict at Side 7, a civilian colony and research station, many Earth Federation soldiers are incapacitated, leaving no one to man the military ship White Base but the young boys and girls who survived the battle. Amuro Ray, a young student, is forced by happenstance into becoming the pilot of the Gundam, a prototype mobile suit. This first chapter in the Gundam saga focuses on Amuro's battles with Char Aznable, the "Red Comet," and the colony survivor's battle against Zeon forces and their "journey to Jaburo."

Mobile Suit Gundam is laden with impressive FMV, nicely done real-time cinematic sequences, and attractive 3D mobile suit designs, but much of their appeal is outweighed by the very bland textures and choppy animation. The RX-78 Gundam, which you'll be controlling throughout the game, flies and circle-strafes nicely but can be thoroughly difficult to control when precise movement is required, such as during the underwhelming melee combat. Targeting mobile enemies with ranged attacks is also a chore, as the lock-on feature works fine against stationary foes, but the targeting-reticule control (the right analog stick) is disabled when locked, so firing ranged attacks at flying enemies becomes nearly impossible. Collision detection is also off at times, which can cause a stutter-step effect whenever your Gundam is trying to maneuver through areas populated by obstacles.

The RX-78 Gundam itself is a pleasure to behold, however, with multiple weapon selections, such as a hyper bazooka and a rocket-propelled ball and chain. It even comes armed with the head-mounted vulcan cannons that Gundam fans have come to adore. Mobile Suit Gundam also features destructible terrain and impressive particle effects. Destroyed buildings crash down nicely in a manner reminiscent of Rampage's sinking skyscrapers, and smaller structures explode in a cloud of smoke. The freedom to explore mission areas is enjoyable. During missions where you're entrusted with the protection of White Base, you can boost yourself through the air to land on top and take this position to snipe enemy targets and provide cover for your wingmen, the guntank and guncannon.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Journey to Jaburo unfolds episodically, mimicking the format of the original television serial. Still images and clips from the anime are interspersed with real-time-rendered action sequences to tell the story, which has perfectly maintained its integrity in the movie-to-game translation. In an excellent use of the Gundam license, character voices, music, mobile suit design, and even the gripping narration and unmistakable interludes have all been lifted directly from the original series. Journey to Jaburo takes these elements and seamlessly melds them with nicely done mission briefings and a sharp interface that speaks well for the game's overall presentation. Once you have finished the game, you can continue to enjoy the technical readouts of the various mobile suits and enemies you can encounter throughout the game, or you can watch the cinematic sequences. Topping off the package is a series of entertaining DVD-styled extras, such as movie trailers and upcoming Gundam game previews.

Completing the game's story mode takes very little time--some players may actually be able to finish the game in well under two hours. But doing so unlocks a tactics battle mode that extends the life of the game immeasurably, allowing you to take the role of Zeon forces and many other mobile suits. This doesn't make up for the glaring omission of a multiplayer mode, however. Fans of the original Mobile Suit Gundam series will find that the storyline, visuals, and missions in Journey to Jaburo are as faithful to the source material as can be hoped for from a licensed video game. Mobile Suit Gundam is enjoyable despite its flaws, and it offers those who have never seen the original television series or its movie adaptation a condensed version of a classic part of anime history.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Journey to Jaburo

Yeah, it's a fans-only production, but what bandai videogame has ever been anything else.

David Smith Avatar

I'll leave aside trying to make sense of Digimon, because that just makes my head hurt, and move on to the game at hand, Mobile Suit Gundam: Journey to Jaburo . This is the American version of the Japanese Mobile Suit Gundam game released last winter, retitled with a reference most Americans won't get, which leaves me wondering why they bothered. It's a 3D action retelling of the first Gundam TV series (which only a tiny handful of Americans has actually seen), letting you replay famous episodes and missions in the cockpit of your own RX-78. As Gundam games go, it's alright, and as drooling fanboy bait it's first-rate (aside from the inescapable English dub), but for mecha action on PS2 you can do a good deal better.

Gameplay Gundam doesn't have the same control scheme as Armored Core 2, and it has a different set of problems, but the feeling of playing it is nevertheless hauntingly familiar. There's analog control here, and an automatic lock-on, but that lock-on isn't all that friendly much of the time, and it doesn't work terribly well with the weapons suite. The result is a lot like what happens when you're playing Core -- you spend a lot of time flailing about trying to track fast-moving enemies, balance between aiming and dodging, and figure out how on earth you're supposed to get anywhere near an airborne opponent. Aiming on the Y-axis is similarly problematic. If you're looking straight at a flyer, it's no big problem to take them down with the beam rifle, but you're not likely to have much luck trying to lead a target moving perpendicular to your line of fire, and the auto-aim will place the shot well behind them.

Hand-to-hand combat is pretty clumsy, too. The perspective makes judging the range of your beam sword a questionable affair, and even the cutting-edge RX-78 moves in fairly clumsy fashion. The lock-on works better for close combat than marksmanship, though -- you can at least hit something if you're willing to charge them head-on, and the Zakus aren't quite fast enough to Heat Hawk you to death in that sort of situation.

The game is still playable, keep in mind, just rather clumsy. The difficulty level balances some of the problems with the control, though. The mission design doesn't seem to frequently present you with particularly difficult challenges, although the variety is nice -- attack, defense, escort, and other missions appear. Heck, even Char isn't much in the way of opposition. Circle-strafing is an effective strategy against most MS opponents, and there are few other enemies than can inflict a whole heck of a lot of damage. Your allies, the Guncannon and Gun Tank, are there mostly for window-dressing (while appreciated, they're not particularly effective), but then you don't seem to need them terribly often.

Graphics It doesn't look perfect, but this is a serviceable 3D rendering of the mechs and scenes from the anime (after all, the original Gundam TV series is more than 20 years old). The Mobile Suits are smoothly modeled and textured, especially the Zakus, and there are some fun little effects like light trails behind their cyclopean eyes. On the other hand, the environments aren't often much to write home about, with some interesting bits of architecture at times but frequently bland textures. Occasionally you'll have to deal with a very short range of vision, too, when an area uses the cover of night to hide a short draw distance.

The special effects, likewise, feature small highlights amid a generally bland package. The explosions are nice, but the lighting is only fair, which doesn't do a great deal in conjunction with the relatively basic textures. In general, the game doesn't stray too far in a visual sense from the show that inspired it, which you can take in whatever way you please.

Crazy Geek Stuff This, of course, is the really important part. Bandai games are not necessarily intended to be games -- they are conduits designed to funnel money from crazed anime geeks into the anime/game/toy death conglomerate's coffers, and so plenty of goofy extras are on the agenda. MS Gundam is a prime example of this, including dozens of cutscenes and hidden original animation sequences to overcome the better nature of the game enthusiast/Gundam fan. This really gets interesting when you unlock the battle mode and start finding the hidden animation sequences -- opponents join the fray from 0079, 08th MS Team and every series in between, and once you beat them, you get to see original movies from their various settings.

On top of that, there's the basic fun of just being able to play the original story, since the game sticks so faithfully to the structure of the Gundam TV series. Of course, it would be really entertaining if you didn't have to play as Amuro, considering what a hosehead he is, but I understand the need to put the player in the role of the hero. Anyway, if you want to root for the bad guys, that's what Zeonic Front is for.

The dub? Well, what's there to say? I could go into a thorough discussion of why dubbing OG Gundam is an utterly ridiculous decision, since you're not going to meet many fans who enjoy both dubs and 22-year-old TV series, while most people who are into stuff this old-school hate dubs, but there would of course be no point to that. Thus, I'll just say that the game is dubbed in English, and you can probably live with it, although it's disappointing to see so many classic characters without their classic voices.

So it's not a recommended purchase for those who aren't fans of the series (and Gundam Wing followers are advised to stay well away), but it was never intended to be anything else. Bandai knows where its bread is buttered, after all, and I see no reason to fault them too greatly on that account...
