FYI to readers – The clip on hardware on the strap on my Bagallini bag broke. Company replaced it for free…arrived in a few days!

I am really please with my Pacsafe Go Anti-Theft Crossbody Bag. It holds a lot more than one would think when you first open it. I just took it to Mexico City and San Jose del Cabo and felt secure with it across my front.

I took a Baggallini daypack with RFID protection, inner-facing pocket for holding cards and cash, and locking clasps on a 3-week trip to Europe in June. It. Was. Amazing. It was lightweight, stayed in place, had lots of pockets, and even space for 2 water bottles. Honestly, I was really surprised by how much I liked it, and almost 3 months later, it’s still the purse I’m using every day. I definitely think it deserves to be added to this list! 🙂

I LOVE the Travelon Mini Shoulder Bag! I’ve used it both for domestic and international trips. While not big enough for a water bottle, it holds a lot. I easily carry glasses, sunglasses, kleenex, snacks, mini toiletries, phone, charger, passport, and more. Plus I can use the locking clip to attach a hat or additional lightweight bag. My favorite feature is the small clip that’s sewn into the bag. I attach my wallet to with a key ring for extra security.

Im a huge fan of the Tumi cross body bags. I’ve owned a few and they hold up and last forever!

The Bagallini Criss Cross is my go-to travel bag. Big enough for all my must haves and slim enough to be zipped inside a jacket.

I purchased the Baggallini Avenue Tote Top Handle Bag for our trip to Alaska this past July— it worked great! So many more options and light weight than the other travel bags I already have. I convinced my sister to buy one too for an upcoming trip to Europe.

I would have never known about Travelon purses without this post. I personally love the Travelon North/South Classic Crossbody. A little smaller than the original crossbody but it does the trick. Gives me the safety and security I want and looks fashionable too!

I just purchased the Travelon Anti-Theft Messenger Bag and will be trying it out next week on my travels to Malta. While I am not too concerned about pickpockets there as I was in Italy, it will be nice to have to feel a little more secure. The added bonus is the pcket you can unzip to hold a water bottled. Love my Lululemon Festival bag! It’s my everyday purse here at home and makes a great travel bag! It was easy to buy a security lock to lock it as needed for travel too and I love how the top zips and then folds over. For someone to get into it, they’d have to manage a curved zipper (2 hands, raise the flap and open the flap and then reach way down inside to get anything. Anyway, its a great crossbody bag!

I LOVE cross-body bags but was surprised not to see the Sash bag featured in this blog post. I am so sold on Sash that I have six bags in four different sizes. Pockets for everything, and the weight is distributed so well that I don’t even notice I’m wearing it. I can wear it all day without ever getting tired. No need to remove it when using a public restroom. Now I look at other bags and no matter how cute they are, I realize I’m not willing to use anything but Sash.

I’m planning to use my Sash bag, but worn under my clothes when I feel vulnerable. I’m leaving for three weeks in Europe fooled by a Mediterranean cruise and then a visit to a friend on the East coast. My trips to Oaxaca and Cuba I used my Quince fanny pack in neoprene and a Fossil one in leather. I wore them crossbody and they v were great but bI had to rifle around a lot. I think I may take at least one as backup and want to look at your Compass Rose bra wallet as well!

The Travelom convertible backpack worked great in France. I word as a crossover when I was on the metro and more crowded areas. And I wore it as a backpack when I needed to give my shoulders a break.

I’ve been debating size of a crossbody day bag for ages. I want something big enough to hold a bottle of water and a snack, wallet, sunglasses, etc without being too heavy. Will have to go checknout some options in person.

I like going with a smaller cross body like the Travelon Convertible Crossbody. But if I know I will be buying items or responsible for family items, I go with the Travelon Classic Bucket Bag. Both are excellent choices for travel.

I purchased one at Target for my Paris trip. I loved it and it was very reasonably priced! It was $30! It’s the perfect size and tbh it beats my Louis and my Lululemon one. It isn’t the most fashionable as it is a basic black crossbody. However, it does the job and does it very well. It’s nice there are a variety of sizes and these are becoming more fashionable! I love this group!!!

Crossbody bags are such a blessing! Please don’t save these only for travel. I use mine daily as personal safety is extremely important to me. I use a Vera Bradley utility as a purse & a small RFID wristlet as a bra stash. The strap on the wristlet keeps it securely attached to the side of my bra. Yes, my extra money is safely held within the high sides of my bra! Last fact, for purses without a lockable zipper pull, use a simple key ring loop. It will attach the zipper to the purse strap to prevent prying hands from opening your purse.

I have used Baggallini purses for travel for years as well as a couple of small leather purses. I used RFID blocking passport pouches and tiny locking s-biners to add additional protection. You can never go wrong with a Le Pliage and I have one packed at all times. Great article!

I love crossbody bags and would love to be able to wear them (not just traveling, but for everyday as well). However, I am large chested so it normally looks funny on me (the strap cuts into the body). For my most recent travel to Europe, I opted for a money belt instead.

You and me, both. I often check a bag for a SPECIAL feature – a removable strap. Years ago, I found a small crossbody with a long, removable, nylon strap. I use this strap on any new bag (even if I must cut or otherwise remove the original strap). I am able to personalize any bag to fit ME!

I love my Travelon mini cross-body. It fits nicely into my Personal item Ogio Backpack when I’m consolidating before boarding. I love this Blog, too.

Travelon 3-Compartment Crossbody love this crossbody bag. It is my go to evertime I travel abroad. I feel safe that everything in my bad is protected from pick pockets and the 3 compartments can hold quite a lot of my oersonal items.

I bought the Rebecca minkhoff backpack and the hammitt crossbody for my recent trip to Europe and they were both perfect. I used the backpack for my everyday and it was roomie enough to carry anything I would want. I could put a water bottle, roll up a sweater, and it still had room! The crossbody was cute and stylish for a night out but not flashy! Loved both of these suggestions!

I’ve used the Travelon 3-Compartment Crossbody purse on my recent trip to UK and Ireland and it was great. Light enough not to be heavy, fit a water bottle, can fit more if needed to stuff a small souvenir or something. The straps are quite heavy though and stiff, because of the wire inside, so it may be an issue if somebody is wearing sleeveless tops or dresses. I had sleeves on all tops this trip though and it was fine.

Travelon purses are the best! I went on a 14 day Rick Steeves Europe trip and the shoulder bag was my savior. It had a locked front pouch where I kept my lip balm, advil ect. The middle section held my room key, my metro tickets, and valuables, and the back section that was closest to my hip help my Visa, covid card and also I could put my umbrella or a small sweater in there. Also snacks fit this compartment. On the side it held my water bottle and the other side pocket was perfect for the microphone pack that we used to hear our guide. It was never too heavy and was perfectly safe on metros and large crowds. The black was the perfect color to go with everything. I am normally a crossbody gal and this was the perfect size that wasn’t too big to get questioned in museums and go quickly through the scanners. Thank you for your list of crossbody bags. It began my search for the bags which I found on Amazon. Love your lifestyle tips-they really help!

Le Pliage Cuir Leather Shoulder Bag is my go to when I am home running errands or when traveling, with a casual dress or someting more dressy. The quaility is excellent, and it cleans really well inside for when you have those “accidental” spills. Can’t go wrong with this one!

These Baggalini travel purses are such a good idea! I have three and enjoy traveling with the one that has two cup holders the most so I can choose between water or a delicious warm or cold beverage. The inside organizational pockets are so helpful that I want to use the purses while at home to shop and go on daily excursions.

I used the Pacsafe backpack and Tumi Voyager crossbody last month in Europe. Love these bags along with Longchamp. Classic bags that will never go out of style.

Love your blog, this was the perfect blog on crossbody purses as there are so many choices. This has been very helpful to see the various options and to help figure out what is best for me.

After years reading TFG I bought the Minkoff Julian Mini last year. I lose interest in most of my bags after a few trips as they reveal their flaws. But the Mini is now a staple because of all the strap options and its ability to slide in and out of my personal item easily.

So many great suggestions here-the idea of selecting a bag made of nylon makes so much sense to reduce the weight burden on my shoulders. I also like the idea that nylon handbags can be washed is the age of the pandemic!

I got the Travelon classic bucket bag before my first overseas trip about 3 years ago and it was perfect. It holds a ton but still allows me to find everything I need quickly. It also works great as an everyday purse at home, and I love the bright contrast lining (mine is gray with coral lining). Highly recommend!

Hi Alex, and everyone else on here, I guess I must be chatty today! Sorry about that part, but kind of feel compelled to add here and there. I am retired military and have been to places most people never see. Fashion is marvelous….but some places require a bit more “ understated” looks. The idea is NOT to stand out too much. Much safer that way. While I’m here, I’d like to ask everyone if they can recommend a soft ( zip style) short boot for travel? I’m looking for something with the ability to fold-up a bit, stay dry, and ( please?) be at least very low-heeled. Even handmade is not out of the question. Ideas…please let me know. Burberry bag….not the Komals purse. Where can I find that?

I love leather, but when I’m travelling, I don’t need the extra weight that comes with leather. Give me synthetics that are easily cleaned.

My favourite cross-body travel bag isn’t mentioned here. It’s the Ameribag, a.k.a. the Healthy Back Bag. It’s very sturdily made, it’s ambidextrous (can be slung and accessed from either right or left), it’s comfortable to wear in a number of ways, it’s machine-washable (depending on the model – mine is the Distressed Nylon), and you can get it in various sizes and colours. Plus, the bag is soft and flexible enough to be collapsed and folded/rolled up when needed.

My only modification is to add an SOI bag light so I can easily see what’s in there – it fits perfectly into the clear inner pocket so that it stays put while illuminating the contents of my bag.

Pacsafe is my go to bag maker for travel. Would not recommend anything with thin straps as too easy to cut and will dig into your shoulder. I always carry my rental’s house keys in my pocket so if I lose it or my bag gets stolen I can still get inside my rental.

I just got the Henri Bendel Jetsetter (full size) for an upcoming trip, I must say the bag’s versatility is impressive and it’s beautiful!!! I can’t wait to use it!!

I looked at that but it can be unsnapped from behind. I elected to not get it for travel.

I like some of these bags especially the Fascino but I do not travel light. I prefer to use the Von Baer Seduction Women’s Leather Briefcase because it has a removable and adjustable strap. It can also be used for work and casual outings.

Well, I must admit that I love the crossbody / shoulder bags more too. Threre are always tons of items I need to carry, Perfect for me as I’m mother of 2 children (1 and 5yo) and we all know that it is impossible to pack yourself into small clutch with this all additional kids stuf. Im looking for something for myself – a nice and big shoulder bag like mentioned here http://thewomansbag.com/cross-body-and-shoulder-bag/ would be perfect but didn’t decided yet.

Just wondered if you’ve looked at Patagonia’s Lightweight Courier bags? I think they have a diaper bag as well. I carry this one because it’s soft and flexible nylon and washable. Two front zip pocket, plus one interior, and very roomy. I think it’ll carry up to 15L of stuff on the inside, and I make up for pocket lack by using eagle creek’s ultra light ( and small) packing cubes in different colors. But the whole think is extremely light. Which helps if you are older, like me. IMHO…the lighter the better! And mine’s black, so matches my Ultralight Tortuga Air backpack. This combo works well for me….even with major back issues. Connie

I’ve traveled extensively and, honestly, I would never use most of these suggested bags with the exception of the PacSafe and Travelon. The bags must have security features like wire lined straps, hook latches, scan-protected pouches, etc. It’s fine to use a crossbody as long as you have the right strap that can’t be easily cut and place your hand across the bag at all times and inside your coat or sweater when in public places. Never ever consider using a backpack. It’s a sure fire way of getting ripped off….

Just to offer an alternative point of view, I’ve always stayed away from wire-lined steaks because I feel they are more dangerous. If someone attempts to cut your bag off you quickly, you are more likely to get injured (either cut by the knife or dragged out into the street) if there’s wire in the strap.

I’d rather lose some cash and cancel some credit cards than try to navigate hospitals in a country where you don’t know the language.

I do agree about zippers and hook latches, though. I love Baggallini bags because they have wristlets/wallets that are actually attached to the inside of the purse. So even if I get distracted and forget to zip it up, a pick-pocket can’t quietly take it.

I too liked Ameribag! At the time I bought it, was living in the same town where they made them! The one I have reminds me more of a backpack because it has a strap to wrap around the waist! So I guess if they try to snatch it, they’ll be getting me as well! I guess there’s something to be said for looking like a camper. Not high fashion, but probably safer. One reason I wear jeans wherever I can, or even ( gasp!) cargo pants. Connie

Hi Alex, Just got back from two weeks in Hawaii and Maui. Great trip and with a rather magical “ Whale Party” at the end. 200 or more whales in the strait between Maui and Lanai….all jumping, flapping tails, and generally having fun! All at the same time! I love my Henri Bendel Jetsetter Convertible Backpack! I have the larger and smaller bag. I used the larger one during my trip to Amesterdam and Paris. It was large enough for a rain jacket, light sweatshirt, water bottle, and my normal purse items (sun glasses, wallet, etc.). The bag was definitely full but I was out all day and the temperature changed greatly from morning to night. It was nice having everything I needed to stay comfortable. A few museums made you leave larger bags at the bag check and they seemed to only ask people with backpacks to check their bags. I loved the ability to quickly change the backpack to a handbag and bring it into museums. I hate leaving my personal belongings in the care of someone else. I highly recommend them!

I love cross-body bags. They are maybe more theft-proof, but they also stay securely on my shoulder where others do not. However, at 4′ 11″ it’s not easy to find cute designs that don’t hang down to my knees!

It’s best to find ones with adjustable straps to make sure you can get it to the length desires. Alternatively, take it to a local shoe repair shop and they can usually fix the length.

Timbuk2 crossbody is the best.

This is the best crossbody/shoulder bag ever! I got it for a trip to disneyworld as I needed a day bag that could be plane carry-on and suitable for theme park that was big enough to hold my bits plus stuff for my 3 yr old. But didn’t feel like I was dragging round a body bag. This was perfect! Tardis holding capacity! Loads of safety zips. But I found 2 big bonuses….first that the canvas was tough and handled being thrown into the footwell of rides for a week sooo well it never seemed to look dirty! And second, the neutral colour scheme meant the hubs was happy to do his stint of bag carrying too! With more feminine colour/design I get lumbered with bag duty, but this is so non-offensive. It’s stylish and durable and I love it! The best bag I’ve ever travelled with!

Amazon has these but sadly I can’t recall the full name… but “ Frog” is one part. It has a window, and two zip pockets. I put as little as possible for the day in this, but usually have two. My bad, The name of the small wallet is Chums….and as an added note, the Patagonia LW Courier bag has a very wide and well padded strap ( nearly 3” across) is adjustable in length, and does zip shut. No problems even in Panama! I try not to wear expensive-looking jewelry or watches, and sometimes even replace my wedding ring with something much cheaper ( silver usually). My go-to travel necklace is made of colorful wooden beads and can go long or doubled and short. Silver earrings and cheap timex watch ( with alarm) and fabric band, is my all-purpose choice for travel. I made a leather bracelet than actually can hold money, or more expensive stuff inside. I would like to say that cross body bags are targets for thieves. The three times I was robbed while living in south america involved cross body bags. For one, they are easy to rip off your body with enough force. That’s how I got robbed once. Someone just ripped it right off of me. I’ve heard of this happening to someone else. Someone on a bike rode by this woman and just ripped it right off of her. They also are easy for thieves to get their hands into without you looking so one that zips is essential. Thats how I was robbed the other two times – having a bag that didn’t zip.

What would you recommend to avoid being robbed? One place I read, suggested a backpack. A backpack surely seems unsafe and you can’t see them going into your bag. I was in Egypt in 09 and a lot of people were robbed while sightseeing. Please advise as I’ll be traveling to South Africa (Johannesburg and Cape Town) soon and doing a lot of sightseeing. I figured I would share this gem. This bag is one of the best investments that I have ever made. It literally holds my life in there! The inside is perfect with a large amount of space, one zippered pocket, and another deep pocket along the backside of the pack. These two pocket are perfect to store stuff in that you don’t want stolen. This bag has large straps that can’t be cut, and it also very stylish for even the fashionistas out there. I can’t wait to get another before my trip to Spain!

Brooke Lynn, I also carry the Patagonia….but the LW Courier bag, which also has the wide strap. Plain black nylon with a zip top and three zip pockets. Holds a lot, and you won’t hurt anyone by banging them in the head with the edges! I have grown to love this thing!!! Connie

There are a few things I always look for when picking out my next crossbody. I tend to carry a lot on me for a day of exploring, so I gravitate toward styles that aren’t too bulky in size, and I always consider the weight of the bag. Fabrication is also important, since the bag generally gets a lot of wear. I prefer sturdy leather , canvas, or nylon, all of which can be cleaned easily. Bags made of these materials stand the test of time, so I don’t have to worry about being gentle while throwing one into a security bin at the airport.

As a fashion editor, design details are also always on my mind—one of the most important being the shoulder straps. I prefer a thicker strap, since anything too skinny can dig into the shoulder in an uncomfortable way, or potentially snap. I also recommend looking for a bag that closes fully, whether it is a zip-top or button-flap closure, so your personal belongings are completely secure if you hear, “ Attenzione , pickpocket ! ”

I like that this shape can be worn as a crossbody or a shoulder bag, depending on my mood.

I really like the bag for all the same reasons the rest of the reviews do. I just have one question, what is the snap loop for? The magnet is not strong enough for keys.

Whether I’m going for a walk, dancing at a festival, or meandering through the airport , I carry a fanny pack almost every day. I love how a fanny pack allows me to carry my essentials hands-free (I can fit my phone, water bottle , keys, money, and some teeny SPF into my favorite Dagne Dover fanny pack), while also keeping a close eye on them. And it’s a truly versatile accessory —  a fanny pack can be dressed up for date night, thrown on while hiking a mountain, or even used as a hands-free diaper bag.

Call it a belt bag, bum bag, or a waist pack, I’ve tested many options over the past two years. The best ones will be made of a sturdy material like polyester or neoprene, and can handle being stuffed full (and a little rain ) as you run errands. They’ll also have been designed with convenience and security in mind — I like my fanny packs with plenty of pockets and thoughtful organization, so I can keep track of my keys and money, and not have to entirely unpack the thing just to find a piece of gum .

To find the most stylish (but still functional) fanny packs, my fellow Strategist writers and I tested several on trips, walks, and hikes . I then also asked more than a dozen fashionable people, including models, photographers, stylists, for their favorite fanny packs, too. What we’re looking for

The material will help determine the functionality of your fanny pack. Water-resistant ones like nylon and polyester will ensure your things stay dry. Leather and neoprene, which can be hand-washed with light detergents, are easier to clean. I’ve noted the material of each fanny pack so you can pick the one that’s right for you.

Whether it sits above your hips or across your chest, each fanny pack has a specific way it closes. A buckle closure is typical, but a few on this list are unique in their design.

Strap length

Most fanny packs have adjustable straps to tighten or loosen them to fit your size or activity needs. But some have a limit on how long they go, so I’ve made note of that wherever I can.

Material: Neoprene | Closure: Buckle closure | Strap length: 36 inches

I’ve been using this fanny pack for a year — it’s become my go-to on daily walks. And while we at the Strategist love the neoprene backpacks , carry-ons , and work totes from Dagne Dover, I especially like the small details in this fanny pack. For example, the bag’s key clip. I’m known for scrambling around my bag, sure that this time I’ve lost my keys for good — only to find them wedged between my SPF and claw clip. The key clip makes my keys easy to find right inside the bum bag, which also has an equally handy back pocket for cards. I also like how it holds its shape even when I’ve stuffed it full of my essentials (it has a slightly spongy exterior, so it doesn’t look skew-whiff with a water bottle inside.)

Strategist editor Maxine Builder uses the brand’s fanny pack because its “logo is hidden on the backside, in relatively small print,” making it more discreet than her other fanny pack, the Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag. “It also feels a little less sporty, so it’s a nice ‘going out’ option,” she adds. It’s this versatility (it’s a day to night fanny pack) combined with the thoughtful touches, generous capacity, and squishy comfortable fit that make this my favorite fanny pack — even with its higher price point considered.

Best less-expensive fanny pack

Material: Polyester | Closure: Buckle closure | Strap length: 50 inches

Jansport is a reliably good brand. I used its backpacks for several years throughout college , and its fanny packs are made from the same 600-denier polyester that carted my books around school. Although it’s the cheapest bag on our list, it’s still just as durable as bags quadruple the price. And it comes in a nice range of colors and styles (including a lilac and camo). “JanSport is known for its high-quality sports bags,” agrees stylist and designer Alljahni Mack . ‘It will add a “beautiful splash of color to your outfit and is compact for an active day spent hiking or working out.” The bag also has one of the longest straps of all the fanny packs listed here, so it’s a good choice if you’re plus-size or broad-shouldered.

Best fanny pack for travel

Material: Recycled polyester | Closure: Buckle closure | Strap length: Not listed

I can’t get enough of Patagonia’s Black Hole range. I’ve named their duffel my favorite weekender bag for two years in a row, and their waist pack has all the features that I love in a smaller package. That is not to say, however, that the Patagonia waist pack is “small.” My first thought after receiving it is that it felt more like a sling than a fanny pack — especially on my five foot five frame. It’s both waxy and cushioned, which makes it water-resistant, but not so stiff that it doesn’t fit comfortably against the body. It also has a five-liter capacity, and an additional pocket to stow a water bottle on the side (so you don’t have to rummage through your belongings every time you want to take a sip ). There’s also two pockets, one for smaller essentials like cards and keys, and the larger back pocket. This is where Charlotte Stone keeps training treats and doggy treats in it on daily walks with her two dogs. She describes the bag as “ridiculously functional.”

Best fanny pack for errands

Lululemon makes some of my favorite gym bags, and like those larger bags, this belt bag maximizes function and style. There was a time it was perennially out of stock (it’s very popular with tweens), but now you can regularly get your hands on one of its 14 colorways. As well as a larger, front-facing pocket, it has a discreet back pocket which is great for storing a phone, some cash, or credit cards. Inside the main pocket there is also a mesh-pocket, so everything inside is easy to see without too much jiggling around. Builder finds the Lululemon branding on the front “a little embarrassing at times,” but it’s small enough to go unnoticed. She says that it fits all of her necessities for everyday errands, including a sunglasses case, wallet , phone, and car keys, and she can “easily sling it across my chest.” Plus, “it’s fairly sturdy” and “water-resistant,” so she can wear it in a rainstorm and not worry that anything will get soaked.

Best surprisingly roomy fanny pack

Material: Nylon | Closure: Buckle closure | Strap length: Choice of either 34 or 45 inches  

I was surprised by how much fits inside the Baggu fanny pack. Inside its two pockets, there’s space for a 16-ounce water bottle, a book, and your other fanny-pack essentials (think phone, keys, lip gloss). Photographer Jacq Harriet even told me that this bag can hold her chunky 35-mm. camera, and is strong enough too: It’s made from a sturdy nylon. “It holds pretty much everything, like a Mary Poppins never-ending bag,” she says. It also comes in a massive range of eighteen colors, and is definitely my favorite-looking fanny pack of any on this list. (I’ve got my eyes on the limited edition Hello Kitty pattern.)

Best leather fanny pack

Material: Leather | Closure: Belt closure | Strap length: 29–45 inches

I’ve heard lots about this fanny pack from Clare V. — two of the people I interviewed name-checked it, and model Brooklyn Decker even recommended it to us as one of the things she can’t live without. Instead of a buckle closure (like the Dagne and Dover model, for example), it closes like a belt with a simple gold buckle. It fits your phone, keys, wallet, sunglasses, and other little essentials like lip balm or minis. Decker got it as a gift from a friend and uses it whenever she’s running around or just soaking up the great outdoors. Iva Pawling, the co-founder and CEO of Richer Poorer, owns it in three different colors and wears it daily: “Clare’s designs are everyday gear with a hint of cool and whimsy, which make them perfect.”

Best fanny pack for parents

Material: Nylon | Closure: Buckle closure | Strap length: 21–34 inches

Parents, allow me to point you to this belt bag, which writer Sarah Hoover uses as a minimalist diaper bag . Hoover explains that, after her first baby, she “discovered that, for day-to-day excursions, a fanny pack is far superior to any proper diaper bag.” At first, she would carry two diapers, a Ziploc of wipes, and an extra onesie in the bag. But as her son has grown, her load has actually gotten lighter — with more space to spare for her own essentials, like a ChapStick and credit cards (which she keeps in the front pouch of the fanny pack). “Paravel’s pack, in its austerity and attention to smart design, goes well with jeans and simple dresses, but has a price that makes me not too worried if it ends up with a little baby puke on it,” Hoover says.

Best ( faux ) leather fanny pack for parents

After being sent this diaper bag –fanny pack combo by Kibou, it has become Strategist senior writer Lauren Ro’s “go-to.” While it’s technically meant to act as a compact replacement for a diaper bag — it has space for diapers, a waterproof pocket for wipes, plus a built-in changing mat in the back — she has begun using it as her everyday bag, she says. “What makes it convenient for baby use is what makes it great for everyday life: Everything you need is easily accessible, and it’s small enough to not get in the way,” she adds. Ro says she especially likes the pocket in the front with cardholders, which lets her grab her credit card without having to dig. She also likes that it’s made of easily wipeable vegan leather. “It’s just big enough to carry the absolute minimum: The main compartment fits my wallet (which is admittedly fat), phone, keys, a small bottle of hand sanitizer , lip balm, and a mask,” she says. “I take it everywhere, and it’s convenient for when I need to be hands-free, whether that’s at the grocery store, chasing my toddler around the neighborhood, or at protests.

Best fanny pack for running

Most runners want a fanny pack that’s as sleek as can be. This bag from FlipBelt is just that. It’s slim, and made from a firm neoprene that sits snugly around your hips (and doesn’t move around while you’re on the go). It’s the right width to fit a phone and a few essentials, but not so bulky it’ll be an annoyance while you’re running. It can also double up as an anti-theft fanny pack, says Molly Fergus , who is the general manager of TripSavvy. “I’ve considered using this as a money belt when I’m in crowded areas. It could easily hide underneath a baggy shirt, so your passport, cash, and CDC card — perhaps the most valuable item of the three — are safely hidden,” she explains.

Best larger fanny pack for running

If you need a little bit more room, you might be better suited to this larger but still svelte sling bag from Janji. Frequent runner and Strategist writer Jeremy Rellosa told me it’s the best thing he bought in the whole of 2022. It’s more convenient than a running vest, while still having enough space to store keys, a phone, and running essentials like a water bottle, a spare T-shirt, and some snacks. “One of my favorite things to do in New York is to go on a long run with friends to some food destination, eat there, and then take the train back home. This pack is perfect for those excursions.” The bag also has a hidden cross-body strap, meaning it can transform from a fanny pack to a sling worn on the back — whichever way you prefer to wear it.

Best fanny pack for festivals and raves

I went to three festivals last summer and a fanny pack was essential. I wanted something durable and showerproof — summertime or not, I was still in Britain. This Carhartt waist pack ticked both boxes and was roomy enough for my phone, keys, money, snacks, and a little tube of sunscreen. You can hook water bottles and a packable rain jacket onto two loops sewn onto the bag, too. It’s since seen me through several raves and events. Though you can cram a lot inside the waist pack, it’s not cumbersome on a busy dance floor and looks understated thanks to its simple slate-gray polyester shell.
