Statue of Liberty

The ONLY Way to Liberty Island

Caveat emptor.

Traveling can be unforgettable, but not always in a good way.  Circumstances can leave you frustrated, disappointed, or even cheated out of time, money, and a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation does not want this to happen to you! Read on to ensure a successful trip to Liberty and Ellis Islands!

Don't Get Fooled, Again

Unfortunately, every year visitors from around the world – and around the corner, because locals aren’t immune to ticket scammers – are cheated out of visiting the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

Sales for other attractions may be misleading, sending people to ferries that only sail around the Hudson River, never reaching the actual monuments. In some cases, the experience begins and ends with a bus ride from Manhattan to New Jersey, adding hours to the failed adventure.

Just ask Alec Baldwin ! And read on…

The best Solar Eclipse 2024 events in NYC

Museums and cultural organizations across the city are getting on the solar spectacle.

Rossilynne Skena Culgan

One of the coolest events of the year is coming up on Monday, April 8, 2024— a total solar eclipse . Though New York City isn’t in the path of totality, we’ll still see 89% coverage, which still promises a freaky and fun spectacle.

In New York City, we’ll be able to see the moon cover up to 90% of the sun at 3:20pm, while other parts of the state will see totality. It’s a really big deal: The next time a solar eclipse will grace the skies over the continental U.S. is 2044, but the next time you’ll see a total solar eclipse in the state will be 2079. That’s why museums and cultural institutions across the city and region are going all out to make sure you don’t miss it. Here’s what to bookmark for April 8.

RECOMMENDED: Everything you need to know about New York's once-in-a-lifetime 2024 solar eclipse

Best Solar Eclipse events in NYC

Solar eclipse viewing cruise

1.  Solar eclipse viewing cruise

  • Things to do

Want to see the eclipse away from the big buildings and tall trees? The best place to do that might just be on the water.

Classic Harbor Line is launching a 2.5-hour Solar Eclipse Viewing Cruise on Monday, April 8. Each passenger will receive protective eyewear for safely viewing the historic event.

While the eclipse is certainly the main sight to see, this cruise includes other great views as it heads down the Hudson River, passing Ellis Island, sailing out to the Statue of Liberty, then over to the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges.

A complimentary beverage is included with each ticket; snacks and cocktails are available for purchase. Plus, guests are welcome to bring their own picnic. The Eclipse Cocktail ($16) will be available from April 5-8 to get into the celestial spirit. This layered cocktail is made with Goslings dark rum mimicking the dark shadow of the moon over a combination of pineapple, triple sec and grenadine, representing the sun. It's topped with a dehydrated lemon slice, the darker center and outer yellow rind mimicking the moon covering the sun.

Cruise tickets range from $86-$96/adult.

Solar Eclipse viewing at Green-Wood Cemetery

2.  Solar Eclipse viewing at Green-Wood Cemetery

Gather for the cosmic  occurrence at Green-Wood Cemetery where you can watch the path of the eclipse while immersed in a gong sound bath . A slew of activities will be held in Green-Wood's meadow and at its historic chapel.

Staff will provide special-edition glasses (first come, first serve) and telescopes with solar filters.

Also expect hands-on activities, artist-led activations, and self-guided explorations. Activities include an intimate soil soundscape installation, a community mural with the Red Hook Art Project, a listening session pop-up with Sacred Bones Records, and a gong sound bath by Samer Ghadry, alongside NASA’s livestream of the eclipse from the path of totality.

It's presented by Green-Wood along with Pioneer Works and the Amateur Astronomers Association.

Activities are free to attend; be sure to bring a blanket or something comfortable to sit on.

Solar Eclipse Community Event at Brooklyn Botanic Garden

3.  Solar Eclipse Community Event at Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Explore the natural effects of the solar eclipse during this free event at Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Will blooms be fooled into closing? Will leaves turn in? Participate in this garden-wide experiment, then let staff know what you see.

Protective eyewear is necessary for looking at the eclipse and will be available while supplies last.

Solar Eclipse Day at AMNH

4.  Solar Eclipse Day at AMNH

Hang out with the astronomy experts at the American Museum of Natural History for the eclipse day. They'll be handing out eclipse glasses and hosting family-friendly educational activities at the museum from 10am-3pm.

Head to the Arthur Ross Terrace at the Cullman Hall of the Universe.

Solar Eclipse celebration at The Intrepid

5.  Solar Eclipse celebration at The Intrepid

Stand on the flight deck of the legendary aircraft carrier USS Intrepid to watch the eclipse on Monday, April 8. While onboard, learn more about this cosmic phenomenon from museum educators.

Commemorative eclipse glasses will be provided to Museum guests at no additional cost during their visit, with 6,000 glasses available for distribution. Due to capacity constraints, access to the flight deck for viewing will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Guests should arrive early to secure their spot.

While at the museum, also explore the new temporary exhibition, Apollo: When We Went to the Moon .

NYSCI Eclipse Watch Party

6.  NYSCI Eclipse Watch Party

With active cruises more popular than ever, backroads adds new options.

Active travel and cruising go great together, and until recently most bike and hike trips have used ... [+] river cruise ships, like this Backroads trip with AmaWaterways.

Leisure travel has been booming across the board since the pandemic, but two areas in particular have been especially hot. Cruises, which many pundits thought might not recover, have come back stronger than ever, and the entire active travel niche has exploded in popularity, with record bookings for most of the major companies specializing in this area.

These two trends have in turn birthed a third fast-growing niche, active cruises. Traditionally guided luxury hiking, biking and multi-sport trips would stay at two or three hotels for two or three nights each, moving guests’ luggage for them as they pedaled or walked across Tuscany or Burgundy or wherever the trip was set. But many travelers have fallen in love with the concept of only unpacking and packing once, using a ship as a moveable hotel. I’ve personally done many different active trips, and this convenience is the number one reason my fellow travelers have cited for why they choose these cruise itineraries. When I did a river cruise-based cycling trip in France with luxury active travel specialist Backroads last fall, there were several longtime repeat Backroads customers on the ship who told me that while they loved the company and keep coming back, they now only do ship-based trips, because they enjoy not changing hotels throughout.

Backroads has greatly expanded its active crusie offerings on rivers and oceans, and its latest ... [+] partnership is with award-winning small luxury line Emerald and its newest ship, the Azzurra.

There are other benefits besides convenience, as guests get to combine the best of both worlds. They still get the trappings of a “regular” active vacation, with full van support each day off the ship, expert guides, high-quality bikes, carefully planned routes and varying length options mapped on GPS loaner devices. They still get the many VIP extras along the way, such as private guides for cultural and historic tours, wine tastings, special meals, cooking classes and such. But on top of the things luxury active travel specialists provide, they also get the cruise extras, like included meals when there is not a special off-ship lunch or dinner, fitness activities such as yoga classes, onboard entertainment or lectures, and the option to take part in the cruise-based itineraries, such as “regular” shore excursions, especially in the event of bad weather. If for some reason (exhaustion, weather, illness, etc.) a guest wants to skip a day of hiking or biking, they can simply stay on the ship rather than worry about moving to the next location on a land-based trip.

There are many standout operators in the upscale active travel category, and those offering multiple active cruise options include top luxury names such as Butterfield & Robinson and DuVine . But no one has embraced this category as quickly and deeply as Backroads , America’s oldest active travel company. They are also widely considered the biggest, and this is certainly the case when it comes to active cruises—10 years ago, Backroads offered zero options, and now they have more than 100 on ships of varying sizes, ocean and river, all around the globe .

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

Active travelers still get the guides, van support and all the usual Backroads bells and ... [+] whistles—plus the benefits of being on a cruise, in this case with French luxury line Ponant.

“When we pioneered the active river cruise space with AmaWaterways in 2015, I had no idea that we we’d be reinventing the cruise market,” said Tom Hale, Backroads Founder, President and CEO. “But looking back, it was a winning combination from the start. Active cruising offers that seamless sense of journey, adventure, leisure and luxury that our guests are looking for—it’s truly a unique and special way to explore the world.”

River cruises remain the core of active travel by ship, as the rooms are typically larger, disembarkation and embarkation much easier, there are virtually no seasickness issues, and almost every important city in the world sits on a river. But the concept has increasingly spilled over to the oceans, and Backroads just announced its newest collaboration, this time with Emerald Cruises , the award-winner for Best Small Ship Cruise Line from Condé Nast Traveler magazine’s annual readers’ poll.

After biking or hiking, guests can relax in the pool on the newest yachts from Emerald Cruises.

The newest just-added trip in Backroads’ Active Ocean & River Cruises collection , for 2025, is a Greece & Croatia Multi-Adventure Tour from Athens to Dubrovnik. Highlights include a bike ride to the ruins of Delphi, hiking above the UNESCO Heritage Site of Kotor, Montenegro, and kayaking in the Greek isles. Departures are aboard Emerald’s two newest yachts, the Azzurra and Sakara, small ships that pack a big punch, with amenities such as open-air bar, lounge areas, swimming pool and gym, along with a focus on gourmet cuisine.

Some bike rides end at the docks, but the fun doesn't stop there.

Emerald joins an impressive lineup of top tier luxury Backroads cruise partners. Almost all river trips, including the excellent Paris to Normandy one I did, are with award-winning AmaWaterways . Most of the oceangoing trips are with Ponant , the only French-flagged luxury cruise line, known for its excellent rooms, great service, modern and very efficient sustainability-focused small ships, and excellent cuisine. I’ve also sailed with Ponant, and it was a wonderful and intimate experience. Backroads’ water-based trips run a broad gamut from Europe to Antarctica, Polynesia to the Galápagos Islands, and Asia Pacific to the Amazon. Options have grown steadily year after year since the first river cruise in 2015, and other new adventures debuting in 2025 include a Multi-Adventure River Cruise on the Danube and an Iceland Walking & Hiking Ocean Cruise.

Additionally, because of the rapid growth and demand in the company’s active cruises category, Backroads has been able to add special departures including whole-ship active takeovers and trips specifically designed for all types of families and children, making them the only active travel company offering family trips segmented by age. They have also expanded their popular Dolce Tempo “easygoing” trips , which are less strenuous, and often use e-bikes, to the roster of active cruise options.

Active cruises trips can be hiking, cycling or multi-sport.

There are active cruises for hikers, cyclists and multi-sport enthusiasts, for hardcore athletes and laid-back travelers, for families with teens, families with younger kids, for singles, friends and couples, on rivers and oceans, and the bottom line is that Backroads simply has more active cruise options and destinations than anyone else. But it’s not just the size and scope that is important, it’s also the quality, and I have traveled repeatedly with Backroads (as well as many of their competitors, big and small), and have loved it, whether on a cruise or not. They have been doing it since 1979 and they do it very well.

Lifelong ‘ghostbusters’ fan tours movie’s iconic filming locations around nyc in $125k hearse he painstakingly restored.

Who you gonna call? This guy!

A New Jersey dad has spent years and a small fortune to build his own “Ghostbusters” Ecto-1 car – the perfect ride to tour the iconic Big Apple locations featured in the original movie.

Lifelong Ghostbusters fanatic Nicky Ferrara, 38, had dreamed of owning the Ecto-1 over the years but his quest for the car started rolling with an eBay find of a 1959 Cadillac Landau hearse that had been stored in a California garage for nearly 50 years.

“Honestly, when they sold this car, they didn’t even know what they had,” the licensed customs broker told The Post during a recent tour in his Ecto-1.

“My wife said, ‘if you want to buy a hearse and make it a Ghostbusters car, do it,'” Ferrara said.

Ferrara immediately clicked the “buy it now” button, shelling out a cool $55,000 for the vintage hearse — he said it still reeked of formaldehyde when it rolled into the driveway of his Essex County home in 2014. All told he’s spent about $125,000 on the attention-grabbing vehicle.

He then embarked on the ultimate scavenger hunt, contacting scrap yards and garages from California to Toronto and across the Midwest in search of hard-to-find parts.

“I’m calling junk yards in the Midwest asking, ‘do you have this piece? Do you have that piece?'”

Ferrara made his replica out of a 1959 Cadillac Landau hearse that he bought on eBay.

His quest for a perfectly screen-accurate Ecto-1 even brought him to Sony Pictures Studio in Culver City, California to get a closer look at the original car used in the film, which was displayed on the lot at the time.

“I watched the movie a gazillion times to piece together the car but I wanted to get the exact measurements for the roof rack,” Ferrara said.

Armed with a selfie stick and tape measure, Ferrara snapped pictures of the car’s roof so he could accurately reproduce every detail.

Using a motley assortment of bits and bobs — including brackets and lights from a 1980s police cruiser and a siren from a 1960s fire engine — Ferrara successfully Frankensteined his Landau into a screen-realistic, road-ready version of the Ecto-1.

He says his kids Nicky, 5, and Domenica, 3, think “having this car is normal life, like, ‘oh, everyone has a Ghostbusters car.'”

Ferrara estimates there are a small handful of comparable Ecto-1 replicas out there, but says “all the other owners keep it in a showroom or museum — they really don’t take it out like me.”‘

The car has appeared at promotional and private events, on city tours — and Ferrara says he even uses the car as a “daily driver,” taking it to run errands, though he admits it’s not the most reliable ride on the road.

Ferrara even visited the real Ecto-1 at Sony Pictures Studio to get the details right.

“You’re constantly checking fluids, tweaking with the brakes and the brake lines, it’s a labor of love,” Ferrara says.

“Every time you start it up, you hold your breath a bit.”

With Ferrara’s investment and attention to detail, the car has been appraised for $300,000, he said.

He’s since put the car to work, taking fans of the franchise on spook-tacular tours around Manhattan to spotlight some of the movie’s best-known filming locations.

Stops include the New York Public Library, Tavern on the Green, and the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, which the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man famously stepped on in the movie.

Of course, no Ghostbusters-themed tour would be complete without a stop at FDNY Hook & Ladder Company 8 in Tribeca, home of Ghostbusters headquarters in the film.

Ferrara even keeps the car stocked with essential Ghostbusters equipment like proton packs and ghost traps for fans to pose with outside the firehouse.

A private tour in Ferrara’s Ecto-1 runs $850 for two people plus $100 per extra guest, or $275 per guest for a public tour where riders are paired with other people.

Ferrara says he has an understanding with the Ghostbusters rightsholder Sony Pictures that enables him to run his business without fear of a copyright suit.

The Ecto-1 parked at the FDNY Hook & Ladder Company 8 in Tribeca.

He even did a promotion with the company for the latest release in the series, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” in exchange for red-carpet tickets to the film’s premiere for his mechanic and promoter.

“I was hesitant to do ghost tours, but ever since Sony relaunched the brand with the female reboot, they’ve been more encompassing of the fan base,” Ferrara said.

“I floated the idea of tours with Sony and they’re like, ‘we’re good, that’s fine’ it just can’t be in any short films or movies.”

Whenever Ferrara rolls his Ecto-1 into town, people take notice.

A "Ghostbusters" fan checking out the replica car.

The Post took a ride with Ferrara on a preview run of the latest iteration of his ghost tour, set to launch later this year. To say the car turns heads is a bit of an understatement.

“You feel like a celebrity just driving it, to see the way people react is just incredible,” he said, clearly relishing the moment.

“I love driving this car. It’s so much fun. And as we drive, if you look at the people’s faces, they lose their sh–t.”

Just as he promised, pedestrians of all stripes stopped what they were doing to gawk as the car rolled by.

A traffic cop in Midtown stopped writing a parking ticket to belt out a “Ghost-bus-ters!” to the tune of the movie’s theme song by Ray Parker Jr. upon seeing the hearse.

Cops especially seem to love the Ecto-1, Ferrara said, and regularly egg him on to fire up the lights and sirens, even though they’re “technically illegal” to have on a civilian vehicle.

“They encourage it, which is really, really cool.”

A construction crew wearing reflective vests and hard hats let out a hearty “hell yeah!” as Ferrara drove by, prompting Ferrara to get on the public address system and ask “Have you guys seen any ghosts?”

New Yorkers catching a glimpse of the car flashed ear-to-ear smiles of recognition and whipped out their camera phones to snap a photo or record video.

Many people said Ghostbusters has a personal significance in their lives.

Outside of 55 Central Park West, better known as “Spook Central,” where the film’s climactic final stand-off took place, Gregory Pozamantir, 62, recalled watching a pirated VHS tape of the film as a youth in Leningrad.

Ferrara did a promotion with Sony Pictures for the new movie "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire."

“I saw Ghostbusters on a bootleg VHS copy, not official at all. Us kids had to find someone with a VCR player, which were very expensive back in those days,” he shared.

“It brings back a lot of memories seeing this car. I need to watch the movie again.”

Simon Calderon, 34, from Highbridge in the Bronx, was sporting a full Ghostbusters suit complete with homemade proton pack when Ferrara’s Ecto-1 unexpectedly pulled up outside the Tribeca firehouse.

“I adore this car. Some people want a Lamborghini or an Aston Martin like James Bond — give me the Ecto-1 any day of the week,” he said.

As much as he loves Ghostbusters, Ferrara said next he has plans to collect and restore a fleet of other famous movie cars for similar tours.

On his shortlist of upcoming projects include the DeLorean from “Back to the Future,” the Ford Explorer tour car from “Jurassic Park,” and a Volkswagen van from “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” he plans to convert into a “mobile pizza catering truck.”

Ferrara says he thinks of himself as the car’s custodian, a role he takes seriously.

“I own the car, but it’s like the people’s car. It belongs to the fandom.”

Released in 1984 and starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson as the titular Ghostbusters, the film was a smash hit, grossing more than $282 million in its initial theatrical run.

It spawned a 1989 sequel, “Ghostbusters II,” but the series remained dormant for more than 25 years until 2016’s female-led reboot, also titled “Ghostbusters.”

Releases in the 2020s so far include 2021’s “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” and “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” released in March 2024.

This Danube cruise beats other river cruises – it’s spacious with brilliant food

This river Danube cruises beats other river cruises for its spaciousness, says Alan Edwards

Confession time. How many of us have done ‘just a little bit of work’ while away on holiday? The odd email, quick phone call, glance at a spreadsheet? Our cabin on AmaMagna – Europe’s biggest ship for river cruises – had temptation waiting in the form of a shiny Apple iMac. But after a disapproving look from my partner, I resisted. I didn’t fancy swimming the Danube, magnificent though it is.

The in-room PCs aren’t unique to the Magna in the AmaWaterways fleet, but the vast swathes of space on board certainly are. At 11 metres wide (that’s the length of a cricket pitch) it is twice the width of any other comparable boat for river cruises. And at 135 metres from bow to stern, it is as long as Blackpool Tower is high. While the pride of AmaWaterways’ 26-strong fleet is 100 per cent larger than other ships, it has just 20 per cent more guests, giving a wonderful feeling of space everywhere, from the cabins and restaurants to the top deck and public areas.

The vast sun deck even boasts a new court for pickle ball (very like padel tennis) as well as a sizeable pool and whirlpool, bar, running track, yoga and exercise area, giant chess, and even a large herb garden, as well as countless chairs, tables, loungers and parasols. You could see passengers on other ships eyeing us with envy.

Here is where much of that extra space has gone, with most staterooms measuring 355 square feet and the six grand suites and the owner’s suite up to twice that size. Magna has a total of 98 cabins, 87 of them with full balconies, for a maximum of 196 passengers. And they really are magnificent, stylish rooms, with masses of storage space, a supersize bed, and a massive interactive TV on the wall. In the lounge area there is that iMac where guests who are not able to forget work can access the free onboard wifi. And there is no squeezing into a coffin-sized bathroom. Magna’s are huge, with dual sinks, a massive shower cubicle, and separate loo.

THE ITINERARY

AmaMagna is restricted to river cruises on the wide, majestic river Danube, which rises in the Black Forest in Germany and runs 1,770 miles to the Black Sea. And no, it’s never blue, however clear the sky. We flew into Munich and joined the ship in Vilshofen, a two-hour drive away. Our seven-night voyage covered 550 miles and took us through four countries: Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. Highlights were Salzburg, Vienna, Bratislava, and the jewel in the crown, Budapest – as well as picturesque villages like Passau, Grein, Melk and Durnstein.

OUR EXCURSIONS

At every stop we had a wide choice of excursions, all included in the price. They usually included a walking tour, strenuous hike, and bike tour. The Magna has 40 cycles on board that can be used independently when not on an organised trip. In Salzburg, we took the funicular up to the castle for spectacular views and strudel, as well as the obligatory beer. In Vienna we did the morning cycling tour but kept the bikes and stayed in the city to visit the famous Spanish Riding School and the cathedral – and to have a go on the iconic Prater Park Ferris wheel. Obviously there was time for beer, this time with Fleischknodel (doughy meat-filled boiled dumpling) and sauerkraut at a street stall. In Bratislava, we toured Europe’s newest capital with a guide who would cheerfully have shot all the pre-democracy communist leaders. Meanwhile, her colleague with another group reminisced wistfully about how great life used to be. Politics, eh?

FOOD AND DRINK

All meals are included and, unusually, there is a choice of four restaurants. The main dining room has one sitting, but we discovered it’s perfectly acceptable to arrive up to 90 minutes late. Guests can book one of three speciality restaurants once during a week-long trip. We loved the tasting menu at the Al Fresco, an intimate glass space at the front of the ship, where we also enjoyed breakfast most days. The Chef’s Table offered another tasting menu, while Jimmy’s “family-style” dining meant sharing a big table and diving into food in the middle. Wine, beer and soft drinks are free with meals (yes, you can even have fizz for breakfast) and all drinks at the bar are free for one hour before dinner every night. Outside those times, bar prices are relatively cheap, with a pint of beer about £4.20 and cocktails at £6.

OUR SHIPMATES

We were on board with 177 other guests, most of them American or Canadian. I’d guess the average age was well below 60, which is on the young side for river cruises. Half of those also did either a two-day pre-cruise extension in Prague, or a two-day one in Budapest at the end, or both. Usually there are far more Brits on board. Most of our fellow travellers seemed well-heeled. We had a couple of airline pilots, government movers and shakers from Washington, and enough business folk to start a country club.

Our final destination was Budapest, which alongside its reputation as a stag and hen do destination is a magnificent tourist favourite, with stunning architecture, great scenery, and masses to do. We extended our trip independently with two nights at the stunning Four Seasons Gresham’s Palace , an iconic landmark on the Pest bank of the river Danube given a multi-million-dollar refurbishment at the turn of the century Our room had a Juliet balcony which opened out to views of the river and the famous Chain Bridge across to the majestic Buda Castle and Fisherman’s Baston high on the other side. Watching the sun set behind those landmarks each night was really something special. Service was impeccable.

We got back one evening to find our phone cables tidied up in Four Seasons ribbon, and spectacles laid on a Four Seasons glasses cloth. We ate a fantastic dinner at the hotel brasserie. The prawn starter and grand marnier parfait for pudding were both to die for. The cruise was pretty much faultless. The ship, the cabins, the service, the staff, the trips. You’d be hard pressed to find a better experience. We’d go again in a heartbeat

Cruise line stops visits to popular Caribbean resort amid U.S. travel advisory

A major cruise line has suspended ships from going to the Caribbean nation of Haiti because of an increase of violence and unrest in the area.

Royal Caribbean has suspended calls at Labadee “due to the evolving situation in Haiti,” the company said in a prepared statement as reported by Cruiseindustrynews.com.

“We continue to monitor and assess the situation with our Global Security & Intelligence Team,” Royal Caribbean continued. Neither passengers nor crew have faced violence or threats, the company said.

This comes after the State Department urged people to not visit and implemented a Travel Advisory earlier this month. The U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince told American tourists to “not travel to Haiti” in a press release issued March 10 .

“The current security situation in Haiti is unpredictable and dangerous,” the statement continued. “We are aware that there are few or no commercial options to depart Haiti safely at this time. As they become available, we urge U.S. citizens to take advantage of them.”

A do-not-travel alert for Haiti was issued in July 2023 for what the State Department described as “kidnapping, crime, civil unrest and poor health care infrastructure.”

The Travel Advisory for Haiti is now at Level Four, which discourages any travel to the country.

American travelers in Haiti are advised to avoid crowds, avoid being outside after dark, prepare to shelter in place, keep a low profile and be aware of their surroundings, the U.S. Embassy said.

Several Royal Caribbean ships were set to visit Labadee over the next several days. Instead, those stops will be replaced by a day at sea as well as extra time at a previously scheduled stop in Falmouth, Jamaica.

Other ships will visit Nassau, the Bahamas or Perfect Day at CocoCay, another company-owned location.

More than 33,000 people have fled Haiti’s capital in a span of nearly two weeks as gangs continue to pillage homes and attack state institutions , according to a new report by the U.N.’s International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The majority of those displaced have traveled to Haiti’s southern region, which is generally peaceful compared with Port-au-Prince, which has an estimated population of 3 million, and remains largely paralyzed by gang violence . The airport in Port-au-Prince has also been closed because of the violence.

Scores of people have been killed and some 17,000 people overall have been left homeless since the gang attacks began on Feb. 29, with gunmen targeting police stations and the main international airport that remains closed.

They also stormed Haiti’s two biggest prisons and released more than 4,000 inmates.

More than 90% of those fleeing did so by bus, forced to go through the community of Martissant, which connects Port-au-Prince with Haiti’s southern region, and is controlled by warring gangs that have killed dozens of civilians in the area.

IOM noted that Haiti’s southern region is already home to another 116,000 people who fled gang violence in previous months, and that rural provinces do not have the infrastructure or resources “to cope with these massive displacement flows coming from the capital.”

The majority of new arrivals have settled in cities like Les Cayes, Jérémie and Léogâne, with more than half of Haitians interviewed saying they chose to relocate to the south because they’re originally from there. Nearly all said they planned to stay with family.

More than 70% of people who fled Port-au-Prince between March 8-20 said gang violence had already left them homeless and that they had been living with relatives or in crowded, makeshift shelters. More people are expected to leave the capital in upcoming days and weeks as gang violence continues unabated.

Prize fight in Memphis: No. 1 UH survives OT thriller after No. 9 Texas A&M erases 13-point lead

The Houston Cougars face the No. 4 Duke Blue Devils on Friday in Dallas.

KTRK logo

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (KTRK) -- Head shots, knock downs to the floor, punches and counter-punches.

You would think a heavyweight boxing bout broke out in Memphis on Sunday night, but it was all part of the intensity of the No. 1 Houston Cougars' 100-95 overtime win over the No. 9 Texas A &M Aggies in the second round of March Madness' South Region.

The Coogs, two nights removed from a 40-point first-round blowout of the No. 16 Longwood Lancers, engaged in physical play underneath the hoop and used their brand of stifling defense that kept the Aggies at arms length for most of the game.

That was until the Aggies went on a 13-3 scoring run in the last minutes of regulation, including a buzzer-beating three-pointer by A &M's Andersson Garcia to bring it to 86-86.

Houston's stars came up big, with Emanuel Sharp leading the way with a career-high 30 points, including seven three-pointers.

Jamal Shead and L.J. Cryer added 21 and 20 points, respectively.

The big story, though, was the foul situation. Cryer and Ja'Vier Francis fouled out before overtime. Sharp and Shead fouled out in OT.

The victory gave the Cougars their fifth consecutive Sweet Sixteen trip. Houston faces the No. 4 Duke Blue Devils on Friday night in Dallas. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:39 p.m. CT.

Sunday's game was the second meeting this season between the two teams. The Cougars won the previous matchup in a 70-66 victory over the Aggies at the Toyota Center on Dec. 16, 2023.

Orlando City beats Austin 2-0 for first victory of season

The Associated Press

March 23, 2024, 10:08 PM

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Jack Lynn had a first-half goal, Nicolás Lodeiro scored in the second half and Orlando City won for the first time this season, beating Austin FC 2-0 on Saturday.

Orlando City (1-3-1), the runner-up to FC Cincinnati for the Supporters’ Shield last season, grabbed a 1-0 lead at halftime after Lynn took a crossing pass from Dagur Thórhallsson in the 42nd minute and scored his first career goal. The 24-year-old forward was making his first start in his eighth appearance over the past three seasons.

Lodeiro gave Orlando City a two-goal lead in the 64th minute when he left-footed a free kick to the top left corner of the net. The kick followed a handball call on Austin’s Jhojan Valencia.

Mason Stajduhar finished with one save to earn the clean sheet in his first start of the season for Orlando City. Brad Stuver saved six shots for winless Austin (0-2-3).

Austin returns home to play FC Dallas on Saturday. Orlando City will host the New York Red Bulls on Saturday.
