Weather or not, the Hawaii baseball team is not looking past today’s opener of a three-game road series against UC Santa Barbara at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.

With a storm expected to drench California’s Central Coast this weekend, the start of today’s game was moved up an hour, to 3:35 p.m local time (12:35 p.m. in Hawaii). According to UH coach Rich Hill, there is a contingency plan for a Sunday doubleheader if rain were to wash out Saturday’s game.

But Hill said the ’Bows’ focus is on the Gauchos, who were nationally ranked earlier in the year.

“Every game from now on is Game 7,” said Hill, whose ’Bows have won three in a row to improve to 19-11 overall and 4-5 in the Big West. “It’s all hands on deck. It’s Game 7, here we go.”

For the first time in his two-season UH tenure, left-hander Randy Abshier has been named the series-opening starter. This also will be his first Friday start for a series that does not begin on a Thursday. Last year, Abshier had a 3.86 ERA in three Friday starts and 4.42 ERA on Saturdays. This season, Abshier is 1-2 with a 5.72 ERA. He averages 11.7 strikeouts per nine innings, and has a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 3.9.

“It’s not about Friday or Saturday or being dependable on one day or the other,” Hill said of Abshier. “I feel he’s our best guy. … He’s our best option, then TBA, TBA.”

Abshier made 40 appearances, all in relief, in three seasons through 2021 at Arizona. He sat out the 2022 season, then went 6-3 with a 4.29 ERA with the ’Bows last year.

“I think the key to Randy this year is he’s been able to pitch inside, really been able to pitch to the glove side,” Hill said. “Before, he opened up a little. Everything (was) kind of up and away. He’s figured out how to stay in front and through it.”

Abshier will be the ’Bows’ third series-opening starter this season, following Harrison Bodendorf and then Alex Giroux. In his first Friday start, Giroux pitched 7 2/3 scoreless innings against Cal State Bakersfield. But he struggled in his next three starts, allowing a combined nine earned runs in 10 innings. But last Sunday, Giroux rebounded to pitch three scoreless innings of relief.

When asked if Giroux was better suited as a starter or reliever, Hill said, “I don’t like to paint guys with that brush. To me, I’ve never bought into it, and a lot of pitching guys do. Like ‘Is this guy better out of the pen?’ Or ‘Is this guy better as a starter?’ Well, that means there’s a mental issue there. It’s all about stepping on the rubber and executing a quality pitch, whether it be out of the pen or as a starter. … He’s one of our top guys. we rank all our pitchers. We tell them: ‘Don’t save anything for the swim back. We’re not going to ask you to do anything more than you’re capable of. Go out there and shove, whether it be five pitches or 105.’”

The Gauchos were projected to have their best pitching staff in Andrew Checketts’ three seasons as UCSB head coach. But Matt Ager (2-3, 5.94 ERA), projected as a second-day draft prospect (rounds 3-5), has had an uneven first half.

Ryan Gallagher (2-1, 3.19 ERA) and Mike Gutierrez (5-0, 2.86) “are as good as it gets in Division I,” Hill said.

Freshman closer Jackson Flora, who has four saves, pitched 31⁄3 innings on Tuesday — a hint he might be a candidate to also start. Hudson Barrett, who was named to several Freshman All-America teams last year, has made only two appearances this year, the last on March 8.

The Gauchos are batting .291 but have endured health issues.

“They’ve had some injuries,” Hill said. “I hope they don’t find their stride until after we leave town.”

Tufts softball sweeps weekend road trip

Tufts softball’ s weekend road trip started off at the Amherst Softball Field  on April 6. Despite the days of rain leading up to the game, the weather stayed relatively calm on Saturday, with a chilly overcast replacing the consistent downpour. The Jumbos entered the doubleheader leading the NESCAC with an overall record of 14 – 4, facing a sixth-place, 4 – 9 overall Amherst Mammoths team. Already this deep into the season, the Jumbos knew all there was to know about the Mammoths and were prepared to handle the game like the better team.

“Our coach just tries to set up a lot of drills that are tailored to [our opponents’] specific type of play just so that we can be prepared for whatever they’re going to throw at us. I think we also try to keep our basic softball skills sharp,” sophomore utility player Lauryn Horita said. “We also know that throughout the season, a lot of teams are going to come at us because they have nothing to lose.”

This preparation was clearly effective, as the Jumbos took the first of two games with a score of 4 – 0 . The Jumbos were first on the board with one run in the second inning and piled on three more runs in the sixth. Junior catcher Keriann Slayton was responsible for the game’s first two runs, with a solo home run in the second inning  and an RBI double in the sixth, which scored Horita. Slayton would score on a wild pitch to put the Jumbos up 3 – 0 . Senior infielder Bela Jimenez scored the last run after a single from senior outfielder Michelle Adelman . On the defensive end, senior pitcher Sky Johnson is credited with the win after throwing a complete game and only allowing three hits . With this win, Johnson’s season record improves to an impressive 6 – 1 . With a solid win in the first of two games, the Jumbos were poised to do something similar in their second game versus the Mammoths.

“We could have had more productive offensive performances. [We need to continue] to work on jumping out early, keeping our defense really clean, making adjustments from at bat to at bat,” Horita said.

It seems that Horita was not the only one who thought the Jumbos could have been more effective at the plate. In the second game, the Jumbos put up a whopping 12 runs  off 16 hits to win the game in shutout fashion 12 – 0. Sophomore utility player Kaitlyn Perucci smashed a two-run single in the first , scoring  graduate student utility player Rachel Moore and Adelman. The scoring continued in the third inning when Horita hit a two-run home run . Later that inning, Adelman hit a two-run single and was eventually brought home by an RBI single from Moore, capping a five-run third. The onslaught continued in the fifth as a single from Moore scored another run, and graduate student utility player Josie Steinberg drove in two more with a single. Perucci then hit a two-run homer , scoring Steinberg. Overall, this offensive masterclass was backed by a complete game from senior pitcher Sophia DiCocco, who allowed just one hit and improved her record to 7 – 3  on the season.

The Jumbos’ momentum did not slow on April 7, when they visited the Hamilton College Continentals for a doubleheader. As the sun broke through the clouds for the first time in almost a week, the Jumbos went to work. Coming into the game, having won seven of their last eight games , it is no surprise that the Jumbos won this matchup 3 – 1. The Jumbos opened the scoring in the second inning with an RBI double from Jimenez. They added two runs to their lead in the third inning, when Moore scored on a throwing error by the Hamilton catcher, and some excellent base running saw Steinberg score after a groundout by Perucci. While Hamilton managed to get one back after a series of throwing errors in the fifth inning, Tufts never lost its edge. Johnson put up her second complete game of the weekend, allowing just three hits .

In the second game of the day, it was Hamilton who jumped out to the early lead  in the third inning, scoring on an errant throw. The Jumbos responded instantly in the fourth when first-year infielder and catcher Heaven Oliva’s single  scored Horita to tie the game. However, Hamilton nabbed their second lead of the day off an RBI double in the fifth inning. This would be the last time they led, as Oliva homered  to tie the game in the seventh. Later that inning, the Jumbos managed to score two more off an RBI double from Moore and an RBI single from Steinberg to secure the win. Sophomore pitcher Claire Guitmann pitched six innings and was credited with the win, with a one-inning assist from DiCocco. Combined, they allowed six hits , and Guitmann improved to 3 – 0 on the season .

“I think for us, a lot of times when we’re in a one or two run deficit, [we focus] on getting something started and feeding off of the success of our teammates. So if one of our teammates gets a hit, we try to keep that going to get those runs back,” Horita said. “I think to do that, we just focus on keeping our energy and communication up and to not get down if we’re behind in the game.”  

Overall, a solid 4 – 0 weekend established the Jumbos as the dominant force in the NESCAC. They hope to keep this momentum going as they gear up for a run at the NESCAC and national championships.

Services partially resume on the South Coast Line as roads and public transport recovery continues

Drivers and passengers are urged to spend some time planning their journeys tomorrow, or consider working from home, with major impacts still being experienced across the state’s road and public transport network following this weekend’s severe weather event.

Passengers are advised to plan ahead with trains to Port Kembla and Kiama resuming on a reduced weekend timetable tomorrow after extreme weather and floods damaged infrastructure and caused land slips in a number of locations.

Trains will resume Tuesday morning between Kiama and the city in both directions however they will run to a reduced weekend timetable whilst repairs continue to be made to some sections of the track.

Buses will continue to replace trains between Bomaderry and Kiama. This is expected to continue for a number of days.

Buses will be stationed at Wollongong and Waterfall to supplement trains.

Currently, Sydney Trains has 250 workers on the ground carrying out repairs following the weekend’s severe weather event.

Passengers should allow for extra travel time, check indicator boards, listen to station announcements, and plan their trip ahead of time.

Sydney Trains thanks passengers for their patience while we work to recover the network.

Other public transport services will run to altered timetables as recovery from the rain event continues and passengers are advised to check the Trip Planner , travel alerts or travel apps and if possible consider an alternative transport mode if your usual route is impacted and allow plenty of extra travel time.

Drivers should take extreme care on the roads and avoid all non-essential travel in affected areas, with the impact of heavy rain and flooding likely to be felt across the coming days. Please exercise caution as some road surfaces may have deteriorated and have potholes. Council and Transport crews will work as quickly as possible to repair the damage.

Motorists are also reminded to never drive through floodwater, follow the directions of emergency services and take extreme care as conditions are changing quickly.

Sydney gets a drenching as heavy rain, severe weather forecast for NSW today and tomorrow

It has been a wet and wild day across New South Wales with more extreme weather expected over the weekend.

In Sydney more than 160 millimetres of rain has fallen since 9am on Thursday, its heaviest in 4 years.

More than 45 flood alerts remain active across New South Wales on Friday night after intense rainfall saturated the state with the worst to come overnight.

Sydney cops heaviest rainfall in 4 years

Here's a few facts and figures from our weather boffin Tom Saunders:

• Sydney has already received its heaviest rain total in 4 years with more than 160mm since 9am yesterday (highest 48-hour total)
• The heaviest rain today has been on the Mid North Coast. Taree with more than 100mm since 9am
• A deluge will arrive overnight across parts of Sydney and the Illawarra, Blue Mountains and Hunter leading to severe flash flooding and rapid river rises, including up to 220mm in 6 hours on the Illawarra Escarpment
• The torrential falls are part of a broader rain event which is soaking eastern Australia, and has triggered flood watches and warnings from southern Queensland to the NSW South Coast
• More than 40 flood watches are current for NSW
• The band of torrential rain is moving south and will clear from Sydney by about 8am, clear the Illawarra by late morning and clear from the South Coast by the evening

Six injured in wet-weather crash

Six people, including two children, have been taken to hospital with injuries following a crash in wet weather south of Mudgee in the NSW central west.

Emergency services were called to the two-vehicle crash on the Castlereagh Highway, about 2pm today, where a ute and four-wheel drive had collided.

The male passenger in the ute, believed to be in his 60s, was flown to hospital with serious injuries, while the male driver, 55 was taken to Mudgee Hospital.

The driver of the four-wheel drive, a 34-year-old man, was also flown to hospital with serious injuries, while his 32-year-old female passenger was flown to hospital with critical injuries.

Two children in the back-seat, aged two and six, sustained minor injuries and taken to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead for observation.

A crime scene has been established and an investigation is underway.

Storm damage to create 'significant work' for SES

NSW SES chief superintendent Dallas Burnes has this afternoon given an update on ABC News 24.

Mr Burnes said storm damage was going to "create more significant work for us".

He said the majority of call-outs had been for leaking roofs and fallen trees and there had been about half a dozen rescues.

Mr Burnes urged people to stay indoors tonight.

"If it's at nighttime and the road is flooded? Do not cross that roadway. You do not know what is under it. "The flood rescues we've undertaken today, the majority related to cars entering floodwater. That puts our volunteers' lives at risk."

Rain and thunderstorms continue in southern Queensland

A south-west Queensland town has shut its flood levee ahead of major flooding, as the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) forecasts heavy falls for the south-east of the state into the weekend.

Senior forecaster Laura Boekel said rain and thunderstorms would continue today and tomorrow, with possible falls of up to 100 millimetres.

"It's very important to note that in some parts of the south and south-east, we're seeing moisture of the soil and the catchments quite high, so that means catchments, rivers, creeks can respond quite rapidly," she said.

"We could see responses from moderate rainfall this weekend."

BOM issues flood warning for Hawkesbury and Nepean rivers

The people at the Bureau of Meteorology have certainly had a busy day. They've just released another weather update.

• Major flooding possible at Menangle and North Richmond from Saturday morning
• Moderate flooding possible at Windsor and Putty Road from overnight Friday
• Minor flooding likely at Camden Weir, Wallacia Weir, Penrith, Sackville and possible at Lower Portland from Friday evening

Rainfall totals of up to 150mm have been observed in the Hawkesbury Nepean catchment since 9am on Thursday.

Further heavy rainfall is forecast through the catchment for the remainder of Friday and into Saturday.

Minor flooding is likely along the Hawkesbury, Nepean and Colo Rivers from overnight Friday. With the forecast rainfall, further river level rises and moderate to major flooding is possible from Saturday morning along the Hawkesbury and Nepean Rivers.

Transport update for commuters

This is the latest from the Transport Management Centre.

Motorists and public transport passengers are advised to plan ahead and allow plenty of extra travel time due to severe weather in Sydney and surrounding areas.

• Wakehurst Parkway is closed in both directions due to flooding between North Narrabeen and Oxford Falls.
• Oxford Falls Road is closed in both directions due to flooding between Wakehurst Parkway and Aroona Road.
• Other roads where motorists are advised to take extra care due to water on the road include: The Pacific Highway at Pymble, Centenary Drive at Strathfield, Pittwater Road at North Manly and Euston Road at St Peters

On public transport:

• Passengers who need to travel on the Sydney Trains network are advised to allow plenty of extra travel time due to severe weather damaging equipment at Redfern, as well as slower boarding times.
• Trains are running on all lines but there are some delays and gaps in service.  
• Plan ahead and avoid travel where possible.
• Buses are supplementing trains between Campbelltown and Macarthur, and between Riverstone and Richmond.
• Passengers are advised to listen to announcements and check information displays for service updates.​
• Buses are replacing ferries between Parramatta and Rydalmere due to the weir overflowing.

Parramatta River overflowing

This is the latest from the ABC's Elinya Chenery.

Heavy rainfall has caused minor flooding in Sydney's west this afternoon.

The Parramatta River is overflowing in low lying areas after the water level raised above 2 metres in height.

Areas affected by the flooding include the Parramatta Ferry Wharf and footbridges across the river.

Authorities say further flooding is expected in the area in the coming hours.

Communities on Mid North Coast without power

Some communities along parts of the Bellingen River on the NSW Mid North Coast are completely isolated by flood water and without power.

Residents in the localities of Thora and Darkwood are affected, and NSW SES crews will be undertaking welfare checks.

"We've got some communities there that are completely isolated by floodwater," NSW SES spokesperson Andrew Edmunds said on the ABC statewide drive program.

"They may find themselves without power, water and other essential services."

Isolated residents in those communities are being urged to contact the NSW SES on 132 500 if they need assistance with supplies.

NSW SES advises people not to go outside

The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is advising people to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel as significant rainfall impacts much of the NSW east coast.

A severe storm warning is in place for communities from Gosford in the north, to Batemans Bay in the south, across to Goulburn, with damaging winds and very heavy rain possible. Meanwhile, residents on the Bellingen River at Thora and Darkwood have been advised to prepare for isolation.

Residents in these communities may find themselves cut off by flood water and without power, water and other essential services.

NSW SES Assistant Commissioner Sean Kearns said conditions were likely to worsen over the next few hours.

"There's potential for very large downpours of rain between the Blue Mountains and Narooma, which could lead to life-threatening flash flooding," Assistant Commissioner Kearns said.

The NSW SES said it had responded to more than 800 incidents in the last 24 hours.

Prepare to evacuate alert in Chipping Norton

The NSW SES has issued a prepare to evacuate and watch and act notice for people in low lying areas of eastern parts of Chipping Norton.

Those in the following area are being told to prepare to evacuate due to predicted dangerous flooding:

• All properties in the following streets in Chipping Norton:
• Newbridge Road between Riverside Road and east to Georges River
• Riverside Road between Childs Road and Newbridge Road
• Davy Robinson Drive
• Rickard Road
• Arthur Street

More than 100 flights cancelled at Sydney Airport

The wild weather has not surprisingly caused issues at Sydney Airport with more than 100 flights cancelled through domestic arrivals and departures.

A Sydney Airport spokesperson urged passengers to check with their airline regarding the status of their flight.

Is public transport in Sydney affected by the weather?

• Sydney Trains and Ferries   asked commuters to take "extra care"   as surfaces can be slippery when wet
• Transport for NSW is advising to allow for extra travel time on the T1, T2, T3, T8 and T9 train lines due to weather damaging equipment at Redfern
• Transport for NSW says there are no significant delays on Sydney's bus network

Hundreds of sandbags at the ready in Gosford

Hundreds of sandbags are ready and waiting for collection at the NSW SES Gosford depot on the Central Coast in preparation for more rain to come.

Members of the community volunteered their time to help fill the bags today, along with those from the Terrigal Rugby Union Club.

Gosford has received more than 70 millimetres so far today, according to data from the Bureau of Meteorology.

BOM updates flood warning

The Bureau of Meteorology has updated its Flood Watch which now includes major flooding on:

• Myall River
• Lower Hunter River
• Upper Nepean River
• Hawkesbury and Lower Nepean River
• Georges and Woronora River
• Macquarie River to Bathurst

Major delays on state's rail networks

Transport for NSW says there are "major delays" across the Sydney Trains and NSW Trainlink networks because of the heavy rain.

Passengers are advised to avoid non-essential travel.

Buses may supplement some services.

If you do need to travel though, Transport for NSW advises you to allow plenty of extra time.

Flooding impacts Newell Highway

Flooding continues to impact the Newell Highway in the state's north, which remains closed between Boggabilla and Moree.

Motorists travelling north from Moree can take a diversion using the Carnarvon Highway and the Barwon Highway to Goondiwindi.

The southbound diversion is the same in reverse and is also suitable for all vehicles.

The alternate route between the two towns is about 2.5 hours long.

Hawkesbury SES commander says it's a 'waiting game' at the moment

Jessica Kidd from the Sydney newsroom spoke to Kevin Jones from the Hawkesbury SES just then.

He said the volunteers were busily checking equipment and making sure everything was "good to go" as the unit prepared for rain in the Hawkesbury expected tonight.

"We're really at the moment just playing a bit of a waiting game, waiting for the rain to come," he said. "It seems to have not been as bad as they were predicting up on the north coast, but as it comes further south it looks like … there's still a chance that it's going to be a bit more intense."

Mr Jones said the local community is "definitely much more aware" on this occasion after going through "so many floods", which has helped with preparations today.

Power restored to hundreds of buildings in Sydney's CBD

Ausgrid says power has been restored to hundreds of businesses and homes after "significant rainfall" caused a major power outage.

It said 1,300 customers were affected after a substation flooded on Goulburn and Pitt streets.

Power has now been restored to more than 1,250 customers after the water was pumped offsite.  

It said the "bulk" of affected customers have their lights back on, but a small number may still be out at this point in time.
