Floating Down Asheville's River of Beer

I n case you haven’t heard, Asheville is a special place. As Asheville’s star rises on the national stage, it’s gained a reputation for two things above all else: an elite craft brewery scene and access to some of the best mountain recreation east of the Mississippi. Any given weekend, you’re sure to find tourists flocking to downtown breweries and cramming the scenic highways by car. But there’s a way to sample some of the best beers Asheville has to offer, notch an epic adventure, and escape the crowds — all at the same time: Hit the French Broad River. Here’s how.

Take to the river

Banks of the French Broad River near Asheville North Carolina

Where you’re going, you don’t need roads. The 218-mile French Broad River cuts a winding path through Asheville on its way to the Tennessee river, and thanks to the newly minted French Broad River Paddle Trail, it’s now possible to canoe camp from the river’s headwaters near Brevard all the way to just outside of downtown Asheville. Following this itinerary, you’ll spend three days and two nights on the river, hitting up a different brewery every day — plus a bonus brewery on your last day.

Before you go

river of beer in Asheville

Photo: Patrick Cavanaugh

First things first: You’re going to need a boat. The trip goes faster by kayak, but you’re going to need lots of space for all the craft beer you pick up along the way, so it’s best to get a canoe. The best part about canoe camping is just how much stuff you can fit in your boat. When I’ve gone in the past, we’ve brought massive coolers, tents, camping chairs, liquor bottles, camp stoves, hammocks, bratwursts, solar chargers — even a high-powered portable speaker dubbed The Block Rocker. This is not roughing it in the remote backcountry. This is a suntanned, beer-soaked booze cruise, so don’t be bashful!

If you don’t own a canoe, worry not. The folks down at French Broad Outfitters have an armada of boats available for rent, and they happily accommodate multi-day trips, including the shuttle to the put-in. You’ll need to call to make reservations at least one week in advance, and make sure that you already have your campsites booked. Camping is only permitted by reservation at designated campsites through the French Broad River Paddle Trail website.

Camping at Rhodes Ranch for the first night and Firefighter Island for the second night is the best way to break up the mileage and maximize time spent at breweries along the way. Book your campsites at least a month in advance, especially during the summer months. One last thing: In addition to all the camping gear and booze, make sure you pack some trash bags to pick up your empties.

Day 1: shuttle, put-in, Oskar Blues

french broad river paddle in ashevile, nc

With 17 miles of paddling plus a brewery tour ahead of you, you’re going to want to get an early start. The shuttle from French Broad Outfitters will leave around 7:00 AM in order to get you to Hap Simpson Park just outside of Brevard by 8:30 AM. Either way, aim to have your canoes loaded up and on the river no later than 9:30 AM. The first five miles of paddling is some of the most technical, and it’s likely you’ll be alone for the ride.

The river is narrower and more choked here than it is closer to town, so you can expect a faster flow, plus overhanging branches, downed trees, and submerged limbs. I lost a fishing rod to an errant branch in 2016 and nearly tipped the canoe on a sunken tree in 2017, so keep your wits about you!

While the going is not so easy in this stretch, the water is quick, and you’ll be at your first take-out in no time. From the Wilson Bridge take-out, it’s only a short walk to Oskar Blues. Founded in Colorado in 2002, Oskar Blues opened its eastern outpost in 2012. Known for its laid-back attitude and cans-only approach to packaging, Oskar Blues is a staple of the region’s burgeoning mountain biking scene. Don’t be surprised to see some gnarly, mud-soaked bikers fresh off some singletrack in nearby Pisgah National Forest.

Head upstairs to the tasting room, or hang out by the outdoor bar and get some grub from the Chub Wagon, the on-site food truck. A burger and fries pairs well with Oskar Blue’s flagship Dale’s Pale Ale, a hopped-up ale with a nicely balanced malt flavor. Take a tour of the brewing facility then grab some easy-drinking Mama’s Little Yella Pils for the river.

Once you’re back on the river, it’s another 12 miles to get to Rhodes Ranch, a large partially wooded site with steps at the river’s edge for ease of access. The woods are perfect for hammock camping or getting a little shelter in case it rains. During the summer months, there should be a couple porta johns on site, so there’s no need to go squatting in the woods. Set up camp, make yourself a fire, and enjoy your first night of camping on the river.

Day 2: Sierra Nevada

Asheville French Broad River paddle canoers

With over 20 miles of paddling total, this is the longest day on the river. It’s best to fix a quick and simple breakfast to get out on the water early. You’ll notice the river starts to open up more here, making the paddling less technical. It’s likely you will still be the only ones on the river, so enjoy the sights as you pass through cornfields and cow pastures. You’ll be on the river for 14 miles before you reach Sierra Nevada ’s newly built river access area.

Based out of Chico, California, Sierra Nevada spared no expense when it opened its North Carolina location in 2015. This gorgeous, massive facility includes hiking trails, an outdoor amphitheater, a full-service restaurant, an indoor music venue, a brewing and packaging facility, and even a gift shop. For a beer lover, it’s like some combination of Disneyland, Willy Wonka’s factory, and Hogwarts. This is one of the most visited sites in the Asheville area, so make sure you call a few weeks in advance if you want to take a guided tour.

As tempting as it is to stay in this craft beer paradise, you’ll need to give yourself enough time to paddle seven more miles before sundown, so pick up a six-pack of Torpedo IPA and get back to the boats. As you near Firefighter Island, you’ll notice some highways and shopping malls heralding your approach to the Asheville metropolitan area. Be careful in this stretch; if it hasn’t rained recently the river can be super low and a loaded-down canoe could easily get hung up on the rocks and riffles. Don’t be surprised if you need to exit your canoe and pull it a bit here.

Firefighter Island can feel a little cramped for a group of 10 or more. We had 12 guys with us in 2017, and we took up every bit of flat land there was. But what it lacks in space it makes up for in character, amenities, and proximity to town. A small trail connects four or five campsites along the island, most of which are right on the river, and a picnic table and a composting toilet make life a little bit easier. Plus, when you wake up in the morning, you’ll have one of the easiest paddles of the trip, setting you up for a fantastic finale.

Day 3: Wedge, New Belgium, and the take-out

Wedge Brewery

Photo: Wedge Brewery /Facebook

It’ll be 12 miles of paddling before you reach Asheville. About halfway through the ride, you’ll come upon the iconic Biltmore Estate on your right. The site of the largest private residence in the United States, the Biltmore bites a nearly 11-square-mile chunk out of Asheville. From the river, you’ll spot horseback riders, cow pastures, vineyards, and a glimpse of the famed 250-room chateau itself. Around this time you’ll also notice that you are no longer alone on the river. In the summer especially, this stretch of water becomes thick with boaters, tubers, and fishermen.

You’ll pass under several bridges as you approach Asheville’s River Arts District, an eclectic community of old warehouses and industrial buildings converted into art studios, chic galleries, and trendy restaurants. Scan the other side of the railroad tracks for Wedge Brewing on the right. Take out underneath the bridge and make the short walk across the tracks — watching for trains while you do — up to the brewery.

Occupying a bottom space in a converted studio once used by legendary metal artist John Payne, Wedge Brewing pays homage to the late sculptor through its outdoor patio, which is artfully assembled from salvaged metal, as well as its flagship Payne’s Pale Ale. Pick a seat in the shade, go play some cornhole, or grab a bite from one of the many excellent food trucks on rotation. But don’t fill yourself up yet. There’s still one more brewery to go.

After getting back in the water, it’s just a short float less than a mile downstream to New Belgium Brewing Company . Although you’ll see folks waving to you from the tasting room deck on the left, the take-out is going to be on the right side of the river. After crossing the bridge you’ll find two buildings on site. One is the massive brewing and packing facility, which you can tour — complete with a slide to take you to the bottom floor. The other is the tasting room, dubbed the Liquid Center or LC. In between and all around you’ll find an expansive and beautifully landscaped area complete with Adirondack chairs, cornhole boards, and even a fire pit. While New Belgium’s beers are available nationwide, the Asheville location keeps a few unique small-batch beers on rotation, so grab one from inside and head out to the back deck to wave at your fellow boaters and look back at the river that brought you here.

Once you’ve had your fill of beer, it’s just another couple of miles downriver to French Broad Outfitters, right back where you started three days ago. If you played your cards right you should have a nice tan from your time out in the sun, perhaps a bit of soreness from 55 miles of paddling, and maybe a little beer belly from all the craft brews.

TOP-RATED TUBING IN ASHEVILLE, N.C.! ★★★★★

asheville tubing brewery tour

We love tubing with Zen! The tubes have headrests so they’re super comfortable when you're floating down the river. You can strap your tube to the others in your group. The river is wide, water is clear, and has just the right amount of “rapids.” Tons of relaxing fun! Would highly recommend Zen Tubing for a fun float down the French Broad River.

I've tubed with Zen 3 times now and I've done both locations. If you want a longer ride, I would go with Midtown location. The South Asheville location was awesome, but only about 2 hours (which goes by really fast while you're tubing). Pro tip: purchase the $5 cooler float to bring along all your drinks and snacks for the best time. Highly recommend!

We loved this as our bachelorette party activity! Wonderful customer service, lots of employees in clearly marked shirts we could ask for help. The tubes came with buckles so it's easy to stay together, along with the cooler holder tube. Well thought out and convenient. Beautiful scenery! All-around gorgeous & relaxing time. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed this!

Had a great time with Zen Tubing. Did both float trips two weekends in a row. Staff are friendly, courteous, and helpful. Thanks to Ray Ray for helping us out. Can't wait to go back again! Highly recommend! The trip was fun....you make the best of it....find a rock or small island to stop at down the river and have a snack or just chill out! Good times.

This was so relaxing and fun with beautiful scenery - a great way to spend a summer day! The directions were easy, and check in and transportation was well-organized and smooth. Definitely grab an oar to help navigate if needed. The best way to stay together it to hook your tubes together, and be sure to get the cooler tube. Bring extra sunscreen!

We're a family of 12, and the ages in our group ranged from 4 to 69. This was definitely an excellent activity for the entire family / people of all ages! We brought along a cooler and had our lunch on the river. Online reservations were easy to make. We had a great time floating down the river. It is a great value for a family activity! Worth the trip.

This was a great experience. The staff was friendly, gave great directions, and it was a self-paced experience. Cruising down the French Broad was a fun way to spend a couple of hours. Not on our original agenda but glad we went. Bring beverages and any snacks in waterproof coolers! Water isn't too deep water and everyone has access to life jackets.

This is definitely a thing TO DO while in Asheville. If you don't have the "expertise" to want to kayak, this is perfect for anyone- you just sit and enjoy as the river does all the work! Bring a cooler of drinks and get the cooler float. We recommend doing the waivers online before you go, saves time when you get there. More than worth the cheap price!

Zen is definitely the word for it!! The whole experience was amazing from start to finish. Quick check-in. Very friendly staff. It's definitely a good relaxing experience for a group or a date. The elements were perfect. It was a beautiful, leisurely trip down the the river. We loved it! Highly recommend Zen Tubing if you're looking for a fun day on the water.

Amazing Experience!

This trip was amazing! The wealth of information our Beer Guide Steve had was astounding. He knew so much about beer and Asheville. It was awesome. I strongly recommend this tour!!

Perfect Gift!

If you're looking for a gift for a beer lover, look no further. City Brew Tours did all the planning and we just showed up. They chose 3 local breweries that each had a unique ambiance as well as a solid selection of brews from sours to IPAs to stouts. Our guide, Raj, was extremely knowledgeable about the brew scene in Asheville

Amazing Asheville Craft Beer!

What a great way to spend the day sampling some of what Asheville has to offer in the craft beer market. Highly recommend City Brew Tours not only to get you around the city, but also to pick some of the best destinations to sample beer. Our tour guide Clayton was awesome as he has an extensive knowledge of beer and the Asheville area.

Great Guide, Great NC Beer, Great Time!

Our guide, Braxton, was so entertaining, kind and knowledgeable about the beers, brewing process, Asheville neighborhoods and more! We would highly recommend this tour to friends who live in Asheville and those visiting!

Wonderful Brewery Tour Experience

I purchased this tour for my husband’s birthday. What do you get a guy who has everything! A tour to experience beer! Kevin was a wealth of knowledge, the three breweries were each unique and offered a wide variety of beers. We really enjoyed this experience.

Highly Recommend!

A few weeks ago, my wife and some friends had the chance to enjoy the city brew tour with our guide Braxton. We had a great time trying out breweries new to us. Braxton was a terrific host and informative guide. We would recommend this tour to anyone looking for a night out on the town or visiting from out of town.

What is the cancellation, rescheduling, refund policy?

We operate rain, shine, and snow as long as the roads are safe and we have met our minimum to run the tour.

Changes and cancellations are free up to 72 hours before the tour. Ticket insurance allows you to make changes or cancel up to  3 hours  before the tour, and we will reschedule or reimburse you for your full tour ticket price (minus the booking fee and insurance fee).  Insurance can only be purchased when making your initial reservation, and cannot be added after the fact.

Could my tour be cancelled?

Not likely, but it is possible. In the event of severe weather or a lack of tour-goers, the tour may be canceled.

In the event of inclement weather, the decision to cancel will be made by Brew Tours Staff at least 12 hours before the start of the tour. If roads are fair and our brewery partners are open, we make every effort to run our tours as scheduled.  If you are unable to travel due to inclement weather, please give us a call at 828-900-2337 to discuss your options. We will not be able to issue full refunds without the purchase of ticket insurance, but we may be able to find you another tour option in the future.

What is your tour minimum?

In order for us to run a tour, we need a minimum of 2 participants.

Where do your tours pick up?

Our pick up spot is at the Renaissance Asheville Downtown Hotel , located at 31 Woodfin St., Asheville, NC. The van will depart right at the time listed, so recommend arriving 15 minutes early to allow for time to check-in! Bear in mind we do not have a storefront.

Why do I have to wear closed-toed shoes?

All guests must wear closed-toe shoes to participate in the tour. This is a safety precaution that the breweries themselves are required to enforce, therefore, no exceptions can be made. If you are taking a tour during the summer months, please plan accordingly.

Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?

Yes, we can accommodate most dietary restrictions. Please inform us regarding the nature of your restrictions when booking your tour!

A note on gluten: Typically, beer is not gluten-free. Some of our tour stops do from time to time offer gluten-free options, however, we cannot guarantee their availability. Gluten-free guests should consider our non-drinker ticket, so they can purchase cider or gluten-free beer when available.

Am I able to choose all of the beers on my tour?

No need to worry about choosing your beers at each stop. You’ll receive a handpicked selection of local craft beer curated by our beer expert guides.

Do you have gift certificates?

Yes! You can purchase a specific tour gift voucher, or select a dollar amount to give. Check out our Gift Certificates page for more information.

For hotel recommendations that are near the tour pick up location, please visit our Hotel Accommodations page.

What is the difference between the public and private tour?

We offer 2 different public tours which you can read more about here . Because private tours are personalized, there is a sliding scale of differences between them vs. public tours. Generally, we suggest private tours for corporate events, bachelor/bachelorette parties, and other groups of over 10 guests. You can read more about our private tours here .

I paid for my booking, but have not received a confirmation email.

If you have not received an email from us, be sure to check your spam folder. Our emails are automated and will sometimes slip past your inbox. If it is not in spam, you can reach out to us by phone 828-900-2337  or email [email protected] , and we will happily send you your confirmation again.

What is included in the confirmation email?

The details of your reservation, the pick up and drop off location for the tour, the tour itinerary, and information regarding our policies.

Where can I park?

We do not recommend driving to our tours. Whenever possible, please use a car service or public transportation to get to your pick up spot. If you must drive, parking is available at the Renaissance Asheville Downtown Hotel for $22 a day or at the College Street Parking Deck for $5 every 4 hours.

Can I reschedule my tour date?

Do I need to print out my confirmation email/how do I print my ticket?

You can simply show up to the pickup spot 10 minutes early, with a valid form of ID and closed-toed shoes. You do not need a physical ticket or to print out your confirmation email, just give your name to the guide!

Is the tour wheelchair accessible?

Many of our stops are wheelchair accessible. However, our seated passenger vans can only accommodate folding wheelchairs on private tours.

Can someone under 21 attend?

You must be 21 or older and show proper identification in order to participate in our tour, even if you’ve purchased a non-drinker ticket.

Should I tip my guide?

We often include prepaid gratuity for parties of 4 or more. If you think your guide did a great job, we suggest tipping $15 per person.

We had to wait 15-20 mins to catch a bus to where you go in. They give you a little direction and then you're in your own! I recommend a paddle for every 2 people. They tell you it's optional, but I'm telling you you need it. The cooler tube was bigger and better than expected. This experience was worth the money. A great way to spend the day with your family and friends.

Tubing was a blast!! The details: -You fill out the waiver prior to arriving at your selected time and park in their lot. It is $20/person and $5 for each cooler float. -You will go over to the area to get on the shuttle. It was a little slow but only because they had a huge party to pick up to bring back. -Sky Tubing shuttles you to your starting point, this is where you get your float(s). They have staff members there to connect your float(s) and cooler float, if one was purchased. Then they move the floats around so each person can get in without getting into the water. -It is now time to float away, trip times vary depending on the water level. Our trip lasted 3 hours and you can stop along the way. -When your trip is done staff members will be there to help you get out of the water and a bus will take you back to where you parked. I will have to say my experience with Sky Tubing was way better than it was with Zen Tubing. I highly recommend this company.

Great experience from beginning to end. Staff was awesome and gave us recommendations on where to eat. I would def do this again soon.

Top notch service from the time we entered the parking lot. The host in the office was super helpful in getting us in a little bit early, the bus drivers were friendly and the entire staff was excellent. We didn't have to lift a finger as they took care of hooking our tubes together and even carrying our cooler down to its own float. They helped us out of the water upon our return and a bus was there shortly to take us back to our car. I highly recommend this place over others on the river as it was a great experience from beginning to end.

A little more under the radar than Zen Tubing but better experience overall. Mainly because they help you get in and out of the water as well as having higher quality tubes and cooler floats. Recommend getting one cooler float for three people or so they're pretty big. Great service and nice people. After tubing, stop by Hi-Wire next door for a beer and burger!

A joy-filled experienced! The staff was so helpful and kind--highly recommend! You can't come to Asheville without adding this to the list!

We've floated with this company a few times and they are generally very organized and friendly. I would give 5 stars but we chose to float with them during the COVID pandemic and despite the website saying that masks were required on the shuttle, no one except our group were wearing them including the staff. This was a little off putting and worrisome but other than that the experience was fine. If you choose to float with them right now make sure you bring extra hand sanitizer and super mask up.

My mother and I chose Sky Tubing for a little adventure on a Saturday in July. We had an excellent time and would definitely use Sky again the next time we want to float down the French Broad. My GPS app directed us to a lot about half a mile from where we were supposed to be, but apparently Sky knows this, and put a dude out by the road with a Sky Tubing sign who happily gave us directions to their actual lot. Use the restroom before you come. All you'll find on Sky's property are port-a-potties. They were really unfortunate and I would have much rather known this before coming. The woman at check-in also presented this as the only option, when I would have happily hopped back in the car to drive to a fast-food shop to use a real restroom. Trust me on this: arrive empty. It's a long float. We took a small school bus from the parking lot to the load-in point. Our bus held 15 people at a time. The busses run constantly all day, so wait for the next one rather than cramming too many people in the seats. You'll get your tube at the load-in point. It looks like the tubes are deflated for the trip upriver and are inflated right before your float begins. I like this, it seems to guarantee you're not sitting on a float that hasn't been blown up in a few days. In comparison to the other floats we saw on the river, Sky's looked fuller and firmer than some of the floppy blue tubes we floated past. We spent an extra $5 for a cooler float, which was worth every penny. We also kept our car keys, sunscreen, and bug spray in the cooler. As a bonus, our little orange cooler float doubled as a footrest. Unless you're bringing a monster cooler, there's enough room in the float for a dry bag or backpack, too. Sky's load-in technique appears to be far superior to their competitor slightly downriver. Sky had a young man holding the tube for you to plop into who also ties all your floats together and gives you a push into the river. It looked like the other guys hand you your tube and give you a "good luck," as their load-in looked awkward and poorly managed. A point for Sky. You really don't have to get wet if you don't want to. I wouldn't tube in jeans and sneakers, but you could easily go in shorts or a sundress if you don't feel like going in a swimsuit. The only time we got a little wet was at the unloading point, where you have to step onto a set of stairs that are partially underwater to climb back onto land. You'll be fine in sport sandals or water shoes for this bit. Sky provides a paddle per group, and I'd imagine you could get more than one if you asked nicely. This came in clutch for navigating around river debris, bridges, and other floating groups. Our float lasted a little over two hours. Both our bus driver and the team at load-in gave us information about Sky's section of the river: you'll float under five bridges. The fifth is a train trestle covered in graffiti; after you float under that, start paddling to the left bank of the river, where the unloading team will bring you in and get you back on land. After being bussed back to the parking lot, we changed into clean, dry clothes in the changing area, which amounts to two wooden stalls near the check-in spot. Overall, we had a great time and I'd love to return with a larger group on a cooler day.

Great family owned business. They are super nice, friendly and helpful. They will help you into your tube at the start and back out of it at the end, you don't have to get wet if you don't want to! Tubes are sturdy and you can use the paddle they give you to check how deep the river is in spots if you do want to jump in, easier to climb back on that way. You can bring a cooler and rent the floaty for it. Highly recommend this company!

This is one of the best experiences I've had. The staff was friendly from beginning to end. Parking was plentiful and there was very little waiting. Getting you into the water is a smooth, safe operation. I can't imagine a better way to spend a beautiful summer's day. Bring a cooler with drinks, snacks and ice, and rent a tube for the cooler. Relax and enjoy.
