From the sun kissed beaches to ski resorts, Spain offers a unique blend of adventure and tranquillity that appeals to all kinds of travellers. Whether you’re on a sabbatical or gap year, backpacker or retiree, there truly is something for everyone. This includes a variety of meaningful projects and volunteer opportunities that allow you to head off the beaten track in this incredible country. Whether you prefer the vibrant cities of Barcelona and Seville or island hopping around the Canaries, there are countless highlights and hidden gems waiting for you.

Reasons to volunteer in Spain

  • Learn Spanish: Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world, with over 460 million native speakers. It is the official language in 21 countries, including Argentina , Colombia , Costa Rica , Mexico , Peru , Chile and you’ve guessed it… Spain ! Volunteering with Workaway is one of the best ways to learn Spanish and with it being so widely spoken, knowledge of the language can open up a wide range of career and travel opportunities.
  • Beach Culture: Craving some sunshine, sea and sand? From Costa del Sol to Mallorca, Spain offers some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. This means there is a demand for volunteers who want to celebrate the sea through environmental projects , surf camps , boating and sailing , marine conservation and more.
  • Taste Traditional Tapas: Spanish cuisine is renowned worldwide thanks to traditional treats such as Paella, tapas and gazpacho all paired with sweet sangria. With Workaway you don’t just get to eat like a local, but you can learn how to cook like a local too, especially if you choose a homestay or farmstay experience.
  • Art Everywhere: SO many world famous artists come from Spain. You’ve likely already heard of the genius works of Antoni Gaudi whose iconic works are dotted all over Barcelona including La Sagrada Familia, Park Guell, Casa Milà, Casa Batlló and Colonia Güell. However, Spain is incredibly inspiring for budding artists as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Sali and Francisco Goya also called this incredible country home. If you’re the creative type, you won’t struggle to find community projects , schools and even hostels that need your artistic flair to help flourish.
  • Island Life: Many people don’t realise Spain has 48 inhabited islands. Of these islands, there are two major archipelagos: The Balearic Islands which includes Ibiza , Formentera , Mallorca and Menorca . Then the Canary Islands which includes the islands of Fuerteventura , La Gomera , Gran Canaria , El Hierro , Lanzarote , La Palma and Tenerife . Each of these islands has their own unique charm, and transport between the islands is relatively straightforward. Better yet, we have hosts dotted across the majority, so volunteers are spoiled for choice!

Regional Highlights of Spain

To help you plan your visit to Spain, there are 17 main regions - yes SEVENTEEN! From the sun-kissed beaches of Andalusia to the artistic allure of Catalonia, each region offers unique experiences, food and locals for an unforgettable trip. You can use these regions to find the perfect base for your travels, and then browse thousands of Workaway hosts dotted all over the country.

If you crave the coast, head to this region! Andalusia covers some of the best coastlines of Spain including the golden sands of Costa del Sol and the rugged beauty of Costa del Almería.

If you can drag yourself away from the beaches, you can discover the heart of Moorish Spain thanks to historic cities like Granada (home to the famous Alhambra palace and fortress) and Córdoba, which has more UNESCO World Heritage Sites than any other city in the world!

Seville is also a city not to be missed. Not only is it the birthplace of flamenco, the passionate soul-stirring Spanish dance and music but it is a city bustling with tapas bars, vibrant street markets and lively nightlife. If you can, time your stay during Semana Santa (Holy Week) or Feria de Abril as these are two iconic events that showcase Seville's deeply rooted religious and cultural traditions.

From seaside cities to ski resorts - Spain really does have it all. Adventure seekers and hikers will fall in love with this region, located on the French border as it is home to the Aragonese Pyrenees mountains. Here you will find a number of ski resorts including Aramón Cerler and Aramón Formigal-Panticosa.

Alternatively, venture into the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to discover breathtaking canyons, waterfalls, and diverse wildlife. As a tip, Aragon is less frequented by tourists, so compared to other regions in Spain, you can expect a more authentic experience away from the crowds. The best news is, we have nearly plenty of hosts in the region so it could not be easier to live like a local and experience the insane natural beauty of this area.

Another region of stunning natural beauty, Asturias offers a diverse landscape from rugged coastlines to lush mountains. This makes it a paradise for hikers and nature lovers alike. Highlights include the Picos de Europa National Park, where you can explore the dramatic peaks, deep gorges, and lush valleys.

After all that adventure, you’ll be ready to indulge in the region’s famous dishes like fabada asturiana (a hearty bean stew), cider-marinated meats, and the famed Cabrales cheese. If you can, squeeze in time for an authentic sidra (cider) pouring at local cider houses - this is a unique experience not to be missed! Better yet, why not volunteer on a farmstay where you can be part of the cider making process.

Balearic Islands:

The Balearic Islands are made up of Ibiza , Formentera , Mallorca and Menorca . You may have heard of these touristy hotspots thanks to their notorious nightlife scene, but there is so much more to these islands. Formentera is probably the least touristy of the islands, but all offer traditional villages that offer a slow pace of life away from the infamous party scene. With hundreds of Workaway hosts across the Balearics, it could not be easier to enjoy authentic island life away from the usual tourist path.

Basque Country (Euskadi):

For a unique cultural exchange, this is a region not to be missed! The Basque people have a strong cultural identity, and even their own language, Euskara. The region is also famous for its traditional music, dance, and art. Experience the distinct Basque culture through vibrant festivals, traditional Basque sports like pelota, and local markets.

Not forgetting the food! The Basque Country is renowned worldwide for its exceptional gastronomy. Food lovers NEED to visit San Sebastian which is considered one of the top food cities in the world.

Another noteworthy city is Bilbao, particularly for art lovers. The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao is an architectural masterpiece where you can explore contemporary art exhibitions within its avant-garde structure. Beyond the Guggenheim Museum, the city features modern architecture, bustling neighbourhoods, and a vibrant urban culture.

Canary Islands:

Located to the northwest of Africa, is the volcanic paradise of the Canary Islands. These islands attract over 12 million visitors per year and are made up of Fuerteventura , La Gomera , Gran Canaria , El Hierro , Lanzarote , La Palma and Tenerife . Many people flock to the region thanks to the year round sunshine.

The Canary Islands were formed through volcanic activity, creating an insane landscape that is unlike anywhere else in Europe. Teide National Park on Tenerife is a UNESCO World Heritage site and home to Mount Teide, Spain's highest peak and the world's third-largest volcano.

The waters surrounding the islands are a paradise for marine life. Not only does this mean endless opportunities for snorkelling, scuba diving, and whale watching but a huge demand for volunteers to protect the precious marine life here including dolphins and pilot whales.

After all that sun and sea, it's time for somewhere a little different - Cantabria! This region is home to a wealth of historical and cultural treasures. Explore the Altamira Caves, often referred to as the "Sistine Chapel of Prehistoric Art," as they feature ancient cave paintings that offer a glimpse into the lives of early humans. You can also wander through the mediaeval streets of Santillana del Mar, a beautifully preserved village, and visit the Roman ruins and historic sites in Santander, the regional capital.

Castile and León:

As the largest of Spain’s communities you can expect a land dotted with cathedrals, castles, and vineyards - what’s not to love? Highlights include the mediaeval streets of Salamanca, home to one of the oldest universities in Europe, the stunning Burgos Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the perfectly preserved Roman aqueduct in Segovia.

Castile and León is also home to many traditional festivals and events that showcase the region’s unique heritage. This includes Semana Santa (Holy Week) and the lively fiestas of Valladolid which is a farming festival to celebrate a good harvest.

Finally, the region is a paradise for wine enthusiasts and food lovers. In particular, the Ribera del Duero wine region, known for its exceptional red wines. This means there are many volunteer opportunities with vineyards, farmstays and families in the region allowing you to travel through your tastebuds !

Castilla-La Mancha:

Although Castilla-La Mancha is an arid region with a small population, there is still lots to see and enjoy. Most notably, the historic windmills that are dotted throughout the land and are featured in Miguel de Cervantes' novel "Don Quixote."

Alongside the historic cities such as Toledo and Cuenca (which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites), you can experience the rustic charm of the region’s picturesque villages where time seems to stand still. It’s the perfect region to escape the crowds and chaos, to wander through cobblestone streets, admire traditional architecture, and savour the tranquil atmosphere.

Home to the popular cities of Tarragona, Girona, and Barcelona, Catalonia is known for its rich cultural heritage. Festivals like La Mercè in Barcelona and the Castells (human tower-building competitions) are unique experiences in the region not to be missed!

If you are hoping to volunteer as a language teacher , this region is particularly interesting as it has its own language known as Catalan, known locally as "Català." You will often see signs, official documents, and educational materials in both Catalan and Spanish. The language plays a significant role in Catalonia's cultural identity and is taught in schools, used in the media, and cherished in literature and the arts.

If you’re searching for an underrated region off the beaten path, Extremadura is ideal. The region shares its border with Portugal so it is perfect for onward travel, especially if you are combining volunteering and vanlife .

Highlights of the region include the Roman ruins of Mérida, a UNESCO World Heritage site as well as the mediaeval charm of Cáceres, with its well-preserved Old Town.

If you’re keen to try a Workaway with animals or learn more about Spain’s wildlife, the Monfragüe National Park is a paradise for birdwatchers and nature lovers alike. It is home to a wide range of bird species including vultures, eagles, and owls and the park's rugged landscape offers incredible views and opportunities for outdoor activities.

Galicia is the final destination of the Camino de Santiago (also known as the Way of St James) one of the most famous pilgrimage routes in the world. Stretching 500 miles, this transformative trek typically takes 35 days.

One theory states that when the disciple, Saint James died, his body was put in a boat, which landed on the coast of Spain, just west of where Santiago de Compostela stands today. His relics are said to be buried in the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, attracting pilgrims and curious travellers from all over the world. We even have a host who supports pilgrims on the route, who you can volunteer with here .

Alongside this fascinating journey, Galicia is also a haven for foodies. Particularly seafood fans who flock to the region to sample octopus a la gallega, pulpo a feira, and other seafood delicacies. The region is also renowned for its white wines, particularly Albariño, which pairs perfectly with the fishy dishes.

Galicia's festivals and music are also some of the best in the country. The Festival of St. John (Noche de San Juan) involves bonfires and celebrations on the night of June 23rd, marking the summer solstice.

Ever thought of volunteering in a vineyard? This is the region to do it! The region's wineries, (known as bodegas) are the perfect place to not only taste but help produce its famous reds like Tempranillo. You can also visit Haro, where the annual wine battle, Batalla del Vino, takes place, and explore wine cellars carved into the rock.

Don’t miss the opportunity to explore Logroño's tapas scene, then work off the wine and food on the Sierra de la Demanda mountain range. Famed for its hiking trails that offer panoramic views, the area is a paradise for nature lovers. After a hard day hiking, relax in the region’s hot springs for a tranquil treat like no other.

The region of Madrid is home to the country’s capital city - also called Madrid! From world-class museums to bustling markets, the city pulses with energy and history. The city's mix of contemporary and classic architecture creates a unique experience - one minute you’ll be admiring the grandeur of the Royal Palace, the next exploring historic Plaza Mayor or strolling along the elegant Gran Vía.

All that walking left you hungry? Indulge in tapas at traditional taverns, savour cocido madrileño (a hearty stew) or treat yourself to churros and chocolate. Don’t miss the vibrant atmosphere of local markets like Mercado de San Miguel and Mercado de San Antón.

After a day of volunteering, let your hair down thanks to the region’s fabulous nightlife. In particular, neighbourhoods like Malasaña and Chueca, are great for bars, clubs, and live music venues.

If you prefer to escape the city, head for Murcia, famed for its stunning 155-mile-long coastline of Costa Calida. Enjoy beautiful sandy beaches, such as those in La Manga del Mar Menor where you can either relax or try the many water sports available. Alternatively, visit The Mar Menor, (Europe's largest saltwater lagoon) as it offers calm and warm waters, making it ideal for swimming. If you prefer to head inland, the Parque Natural de Sierra Espuña offers endless trekking experiences.

Highlights also include the historic city of Murcia itself as well as Cartagena, where ancient ruins, a Roman theatre, and historical sites offer a glimpse into the region's rich history. Foodie fans will also love this region as Murcia's cuisine is influenced by its coastal location. The region is also famous for its Murcian pastries, including paparajotes, which are lemon tree leaves coated in batter and deep-fried. DELICIOUS!

Navarre boasts a diverse landscape that outdoor enthusiasts will LOVE. For example, the stunning Pyrenees mountains, which offer opportunities to hike and ski. You can also visit Bardenas Reales, a unique desert-like landscape which is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with distinctive rock formations and trails for hiking and biking.

For a unique cultural experience, visit the historic city of Pamplona, known for the Running of the Bulls during the San Fermín festival. Like most of Spain, the region is renowned for pintxos but don't miss the opportunity to taste traditional dishes like menestra (vegetable stew) and chistorra (spiced sausage).

You may have already heard of Valencia's urban beaches, such as the serene Playa de la Malvarrosa, or the tourist hotspot and beach town of Benidorm, but there is so much more to explore in this region.

Starting with the food! Valencia is the birthplace of paella, one of Spain's most iconic dishes, so arguably it's the best region to try it. If you love your food, you also need to visit Dénia - a UNESCO City of Gastronomy! Wherever you go, you will find delicious dishes that combine the freshest catch of the day with local produce. The port city is also a popular gateway to the Balearic islands if you’re ready for an island hopping adventure.

The region is also renowned for its lively festivals. The Fallas festival in Valencia involves massive satirical sculptures, fireworks, and parades. Or for an experience you’ll never forget, La Tomatina in Buñol is a tomato-throwing festival that attracts participants from around the world!

Making a difference in Spain

Due to the diverse landscapes and climate, Spain is known for its agricultural practices. This means it's the perfect destination for those interested in giving off grid living a chance , an authentic farmstay like this one in Catalonia or learning about permaculture . There is also a demand for volunteers to support olive and citrus farms as well as vineyards.

This not only allows you to support local communities with harvesting and distribution, but you’ll be rewarded with some of the most memorable scenery, food and friends you could wish for. If you’re interested in this type of volunteering , simply enter keywords such as “permaculture, eco-farm, olive farm, vineyard, harvest, farmstay” into the host keyword box .

Alternatively, if you’re still passionate about protecting the land, but not so keen on farming why not check out our Workaway projects for eco warriors . There are so many ways you can support sustainability in Spain from marine conservation to eco-construction.

If you prefer the sound of Spain’s vibrant cities like Madrid or Barcelona instead of rural living, why not look for opportunities supporting community projects or teaching . There are also opportunities to make a difference behind the scenes, with many hosts requiring help with marketing, social media and web design – particularly within the tourism industry. From helping in a hostel to sharing your skills at a surf school, there are many ways you can enjoy Spain’s famous regions, without the tourist price tag!

There is also an “EduCare” option.  The EduCare component of the Au Pair program is for foreign nationals providing childcare for school-aged children.  EduCare companions must fulfill the standard requirements to be an au pair.  The EduCare participant must complete an educational component of at least 12 semester hours of academic credit or its equivalent.

Several Spanish organizations are associated with American designated sponsors to select participants for this program.

There are lots of seasonal jobs which attract huge interest in places like Ibiza, Mallorca and the Balearic Islands – who wouldn’t want to spend summer on the beach in the sun!

Teach in Spain

Teaching English on a gap year in Spain is a very popular way to live in the country and get paid. Lots of local recruiters and language schools hire international staff to work in places like Madrid, Seville, Valencia and Barcelona. Usually you need to be aged 18+ have a TEFL certification.

Study in Spain

Whether you want to pursue your academic studies abroad or learn a language , Spain is the perfect destination to be a student.

Spanish is the third most spoken language in the world after Chinese and English, and speaking it can increase your job opportunities in the future. A stay in Spain is the best way to learn the language, and you can also find a fascinating country that has considerable artistic heritage, rich cultural and culinary traditions, as well as a pleasant climate, these all combine to make Spain one of the most visited countries in the world.

There are highly rated universities located throughout the country and a lot offer courses in English. If you would like to learn Spanish you can book courses with language schools in places like Madrid, Valencia, Alicante, Bilbao, Barcelona, Seville and Malaga – just to name a few popular locations.

Spain Tours

You could arrange a trip independently or book a tour, local and international travel companies offer a range of group tours to all the major tourist destinations. Some trips last a few days whilst others last weeks taking in so many locations. Tours are also a great way to meet other people and have a lot of fun.

Backpacking in Spain

So where should you go for your Spanish gap year? Here are our top picks:

Madrid The Spanish capital is a fast, diverse and exciting destination, and it offers an excellent cultural and artistic heritage. Gap year options in Madrid include international studies courses and foreign language programmes, and there are a number of opportunities for volunteer work as well.

Seville Situated in Andalusia on the banks of the Guadalquivir River, Seville is the cultural and financial heart of southern Spain. For centuries, it served as a major seaport, and it boasts a mixture of historic architecture from Roman, Islamic and Christian eras. Gap year opportunities include teaching English, working in a senior centre or helping to feed the homeless.

Barcelona Spain’s second largest city and the capital of Catalonia, Barcelona offers a fabulous combination of bustling metropolis and beach paradise – with plenty of Gaudi’s architecture mixed in too. For gap year students, there’s also an excellent mix of options: take a language course, work on marine conservation projects or opt to help out in a social welfare project.

Malaga Located in the beautiful Costa del Sol, Malaga offers gap year students the ideal combination of sunny beaches and educational opportunities. As well as the normal year out options of volunteer work or learning a language, possibilities in Malaga also include adrenaline-fuelled adventures, such as learning to surf or kiteboard.

Ibiza While its reputation might be that of the Mediterranean’s party hotspot, Ibiza offers far more than beaches and bars. The third largest of the Balearics also boasts ancient landmarks and stunning natural scenery. Take up a job in a bar, club or hotel, volunteer to work in the local community or spend some time helping out at a local animal shelter.

Tenerife As the capital of the Canary Islands, Santa Cruz has long been a favourite destination for holidaymakers, and it’s also growing in popularity for those seeking a unique gap year. Work in the hospitality industry at a resort, opt for an intensive scuba course or discover the unique ecosystems of the islands.

Is there some other life you know you could be living ?

Why Work and Travel in Spain?

A rich history of romance and adventure.

Spain has been a promised land for for travelers and adventurers since long before Ernest Hemingway went to Pamplona . The beautiful Mediterranean landscape and the storied cities and villages have drawn writers, artists and musicians for centuries .

A unique culture ripe with new experiences

Spanish culture goes back millennia. It’s filled with tons of traditions and customs influenced by the Romans, Moors, Catalans, Castilians and more.

There’s architecture, music and ancient festivals. Maybe best of all, there’s world-famous Spanish food like tapas, empanadas and paella.

Plenty of opportunities for foreigners to work and travel

Spain packs a lot into a space smaller than Texas. You can travel from the beach to the mountains, from quaint villages to historical cities in only a few hours by car. There’s also a great train network and plenty of budget airlines.

As you’re about to see, there are a lot of ways for foreigners to work to fund their travels, too .

Necessary Documents to Work and Travel in Spain

The good news is you probably don’t need to secure a visa ahead of time to enter Spain. In fact, you probably don’t need anything other than your passport . Americans, Canadians and Australians can all receive a 90-day tourist visa upon arrival in the country.

The bad news is that if you want to stay longer than three months, you have to do the paperwork for another kind of visa. Luckily, you have a few options.

Student visa

Spain gives student visas to people studying abroad or otherwise enrolled in Spanish universities. The government also issues this type of visa for certain types of professional programs, such as the Auxiliares de Conversación (Conversation Assistants) .

While these visas usually last a short period of time—six months to a year—they do normally allow visa holders to request a part-time work permit.

Work and residence visas

The Spanish government issues work and residence visas for a variety of situations. People with close family members in the country have the easiest route, but you can also request a work visa if you have a company willing to sponsor you or if you’ve been paying into the Spanish social security system through part-time work or other means for a certain amount of time.

Because these visa processes are so complicated, it’s best to discuss your options with an immigration lawyer who knows the applicable laws.

1. Find a Volunteer or Internship Position

work and travel spain

Volunteering and internships are great ways to travel and gain experience for later in life.

In Spain, you can volunteer for numerous causes, from education to ecology, with reputable agencies such as  GoAbroad .

work and travel spain

You can also intern for major companies. Spain has a large tourism industry, which means placement agencies like Worldwide Internships  can find you positions in the hospitality, culinary and entertainment industries.

Volunteers and interns usually aren’t paid, but some programs may offer free room and board or even a small stipend. This way, you don’t have to worry about supporting yourself and can spend your money on travel.

2. Become a Yachtie

Situated on the Mediterranean, Spain is home base for a lot of yachts. The Balearic Islands, as well as coastal cities such as Barcelona and Valencia, are popular ports for boats from all over the world. You can take advantage of these locations to support your travels .

Since I moved to Spain, I’ve met tons of yachties, mostly down in Santa Catalina, telling stories on the cafe terraces while they wait for their ships to set sail again. From a South African surfer to a Dutch Caribbean islander who worked a butterfly farm on her off season, they’ve always been some of the most interesting people around.

work and travel spain

To join a yacht crew, you’ll need certifications. You can take these courses before you leave for Spain from a reputable school , such as  Bluewater Crew Training ,  then make a Spanish city your port of call once you’ve found a yacht to work on.

Service experience and flexibility are key to finding a job, but your biggest asset is a good repertoire of languages. If you want to work out of Spain, you should specifically study up on German , Russian and, of course, Spanish .

3. Land an  Au Pair  Gig

If you want to work in Spain while still being able to travel, being an au pair is a good option.

Many Spanish parents need people to care for their children. They love hiring international caretakers so their kids can experience a different culture and language at a young age. And they know you want to experience a different culture and language, too! These positions are usually flexible so you have weekends and some vacation time to travel around Spain or the rest of Europe.

It’s important to conduct due diligence and set yourself up for success when you au pair . Find a reputable  au pair agency that will place you in a situation you’ll enjoy.

4. Work as a Digital Nomad

One of the best ways to support your travel lifestyle is by taking part in the digital economy . Whatever your particular skill set, there’s probably a way to do your work online .

work and travel spain

You can work as a freelance writer, travel photographer , graphic designer… you can even work in fields like customer service remotely! As long as you have an internet connection, you can keep up with your clients over email or even hold video calls by using programs like Skype or Google Duo .

work and travel spain

Wondering where to start? If you want to be a travel writer , you could see your name in print right here on the FluentU Travel Blog !  Check out how to apply to be a long-term travel blogger here .

You can work for a few weeks out of Spain and then continue on to your next destination. Or maybe you’ll fall in love with the country and decide to stay.

5. Teach English

English is in high demand in Spain thanks to its role as the modern global lingua franca . The country lags behind a lot of Europe in English education, though, and they need as many qualified native-speaking teachers as they can get. As a result, there are numerous ways to work and and fund your travel adventures by teaching your native language .

Here are your best options:

After World War II, the United States began the Fulbright Program to encourage international exchange. It’s currently administered by the U.S. Department of State, which gives 137 prestigious Fulbright Fellowships per year for Americans to teach English in Spain.

I was a Fulbright Fellow for the 2012-2013 school year and had one of the most enriching experiences of my life.

Auxiliares de Conversación  (Conversation Assistants)

work-and-travel-spain

This program is similar to Fulbright but is run by the Spanish government. Every year the government provide thousands of positions for Americans and Canadians to teach English part-time in Spanish schools.

This is my third year as an Auxiliar in Mallorca. That should tell you something about how amazing the program is! I can’t emphasize enough how great this program is for starting your time in Spain. Needless to say, I plan to renew for a fourth year.

Private programs

Since Spain needs so much English education, there are a lot of private organizations that provide part-time teaching positions in addition to the government.

work-and-travel-spain

While there are numerous opportunities, be careful and do your research before committing to anything. Reputable companies like Meddeas  place you in a great school with professional support on par with the state-run Auxiliares program.

Independent contractor

If you’d prefer to be your own boss, you can always try to teach English freelance. Many Spanish people look for private teachers to tutor their children outside of school or to help them with their own English for work.

work-and-travel-spain

Your first obstacle is getting the right visa. You have to register as self-employed and make sure you pay taxes as you’re legally required. Then you can print fliers, post on websites like tusclasesparticulares.com or go by word of mouth to build your client base.

I almost didn’t come to Spain. It was a major change, and I was comfortable living in my own little bubble back home.

Christian Monson is an American living and working in Mallorca. After studying English and German at the University of Arkansas, he was a Fulbright Fellow in Germany before moving to Spain. He speaks German and Spanish and an ever-increasing amount of Catalan. You can learn more about his articles and fiction at christianmonson.com .

Jobs in Spain

Although Spain was hit particularly hard by the recent economic crisis, its economy is slowly regaining strength in many sectors, opening the door for foreign nationals to fill in a variety of different forms of employment. Working abroad in Spain is a fantastic opportunity to embrace the beauty of the Spanish culture, while gaining an even deeper understanding of Spanish society by joining its work force. If it has been a dream of yours to live in Spain, then supporting yourself by finding a job in Spain may not be as hard as you think.

Most expats choose to look for work in Spain in one of the major cities, where jobs are most readily available for international workers. Here are some of the best cities for expats in Spain.

Madrid is the country’s capital and is not only a major center of Spanish culture, but also a highly influential force in the global economy and a host to many prestigious international organizations. If you want to to work abroad in Spain in a place a buzz of importance, then Madrid is the place for you.

Barcelona offers a more laid-back feel to working in Spain. As one of the most popular travel destinations in the world because of its distinct art and pristine setting on the Mediterranean coast, Barcelona is also a major center of commerce and industry, making it ideal for jobs in Spain.

Valencia and Seville are two more popular cities for jobs in Spain, each offering a unique regional taste of Spanish culture. Your options for jobs abroad in Spain are not limited to these four major cities, but they remain the primary hubs of activity in Spain with the most job opportunities.

The competition for high-paying jobs abroad in Spain is fierce, as you will be standing toe-to-toe against many highly qualified Spanish graduates. You will have the best luck landing a job in Spain if you are fluent in Spanish and carry with you adequate experience and skills relevant to the position you are applying for.

The easiest type of work to land in Spain are in temporary positions, such as teaching English , au pairing , or working within the tourism industry. If you are bilingual, in both Spanish and English, then you will stand out above the rest for openings in any of the latter jobs in Spain. There are many work abroad programs in Spain which work closely with Spanish organizations and businesses to help foreigners obtain temporary employment, allowing them to work in Spain for up to one or two years.

If you want to apply for a more long-term job in Spain, your best luck will be in the service industry or in information technology (two fields that have withstood the recession and continue to thrive).

Your salary will depend on the line of work you enter into, but overall you shouldn’t expect to make too much money working in Spain. If you are entering into a temporary job in Spain, you will likely earn a basic salary which is enough to get by since basic costs of living are a bit cheaper when compared to neighboring countries, although real estate can be quite expensive (especially in the major cities). The amount you save up while working in Spain all depends on your spending habits!

Since housing in Spain’s major cities can be quite expensive, foreign workers should consider starting out by renting a single room in an apartment while working in Spain. If you are making enough money to afford your own place, housing is usually more affordable the further you move from the city center. Many people also choose to live in suburban neighborhoods and commute (some Spanish cities have better public transportation than others, making this a viable option in some places over others).

As for visas, if you are a resident of the European Union, then you will not have to apply for a visa to work abroad in Spain. Workers coming from most other countries, however, will have to obtain a visa in order to stay in the country for longer than three months. The visa you need will vary depending on your job in Spain and home country. You can check out GoAbroad’s Embassy Directory to learn more information from your local Spanish consulate. If you do your research, you may find employers willing to help you through the process of obtaining a visa and work permit for different jobs in Spain.

Many opportunities to work abroad in Spain are simply temporary employment, but any international work experience and professional networking can take you a long way in your future career. All employers love it when applicants have work experience in a diverse, global environment, especially one that is bilingual. GoAbroad Insider tip: apply to your prospective job positions in Spanish! Showing off your linguistic skills may open up more opportunities for work in Spain. But don’t stress about those language skill too much, you have plenty of time to practice while working in Spain.

While you are working abroad in Spain don’t forget to embrace the Spanish culture. Spain is world-renowned for its beauty and cultural richness; from flamenco to tapas to bullfighting, you will experience it all while working abroad in Spain. Spain is a diverse and historically fascinating country. As if it needs to be said, working abroad in Spain will be the adventure of a lifetime. You will meet people from all over the world, travel across the country (and possibly to neighboring countries!), and create memories that will stay with you forever.

Living Abroad , Spain

Workaway spain: work and travel in the spanish countryside, workaway spain life.

Waking up to the end of summer sun rising over the sun-browned hills of the Spanish countryside.

Making breakfast with fresh eggs and showering with a view.

Wandering with the dogs up and down the rolling hills, stopping to eat freshly cracked almonds and enjoy the hospitality of Spanish neighbours without much understanding of what the other is saying.

Cleaning the never-ending dust away from around the traditional Andalusian-style house, followed by siestas in the afternoon.

Listening to the one radio channel that reaches through to this remote location while playing cards and drinking local beer to pass the time as the sun sinks.

Enjoying our evening meal late to avoid the heat and wasps that disappear with the sun before talking into the night and collapsing into bed to wake up again for another day in the Alora Campo.

This was my life on a work exchange in Spain.

Work Exchange Spain Alora Campo HelpX

I spent one of the best travel weeks I have ever had doing a work exchange in Spain – in the countryside 40km from Malaga, twenty minutes drive up a riverbed from a small Andalusian town called Alora, in what is called the Alora Campo.

I’m generally happy to spend time exploring city sights, but I’ve always been drawn to the countryside to see life at a slower pace and be away from the hustle of the city.

Searching for a different travel experience and a way to save money while travelling led me to the idea of doing a Workaway in Spain.

What is a Workaway?

A Workaway, or work exchange, is basically what it sounds like! You work in exchange for free accommodation and often food.

The exact terms are between you and the people who you’re working for, but a general rule of thumb is around 4-5 hours of work a day for full room and board.

There are some great websites that help you connect and plan your Workaway with people willing to offer you a place to stay in exchange for work.

How can you get work exchange jobs?

You need to pay to create your work exchange profile on various platforms, but if you’re actually planning on using the service, it’s definitely worth it.

You’re saving on some of the biggest costs of travelling!

In your profile, you can indicate where you’re interested in travelling and what kind of work you could do. Be realistic!

There are 3 main websites:

  • Workaway : The biggest platform and most well-known.
  • HelpX : A smaller platform but with more access to see what’s available before you pay.
  • Woofing : Mainly working on organic farms around the world.

I chose HelpX for Spain over others such as Workaway and Woofing because HelpX lets you see the offerings in each country before you need to sign up for a small yearly fee that then gives you more access and the ability to contact owners.

Work Exchange Spain Alora Campo HelpX

Tips for selecting a place to work for accommodation

Work exchange is a great option for long-term travellers and budget travellers or those looking to spend a decent amount of time in one place experiencing what normal life could be like. It’s one of the best ways to work and travel the world .

If you’re travelling on a budget and headed somewhere where the accommodation is expensive, then a work exchange would be a great way to save money and extend your travels.

I spent a long time looking at the different areas I wanted to go to for my HelpX in Spain, reading reviews and seeing if the place was a match for my expectations. It was important to me to be somewhere social but in the countryside.

There are definitely work exchange jobs hosts for those that want to experience life in a city. This would be a great way to try out a place before moving there or just have a taste of what it’s like to live somewhere different .

There are usually hostel or guest house options or even family stays.

Tips for selecting a Workaway host

There are so many Workaway in Spain options to choose from, working in hostels and hotels, in the countryside, in the city, in more plush accommodations, or even camping, not to mention all different kinds of work.

For my HelpX in Spain, I purposely chose a host that offered places to multiple volunteers because I wanted to be able to meet other travellers.

Remember, the host needs to choose you as well.

My Workaway hosts in Spain told me they received multiple messages a day from potential workers. Make your profile attractive. Include pictures and information about yourself.

Most importantly, don’t send a generic email to everyone you are thinking of staying with.

Some hosts only want long-term stayers or workers with certain experiences, such as building. Some want specific dates. Pay attention to their listing to be sure you meet their need for workers in exchange for whatever kind of accommodation they provide.

You can email a few hosts just in case, but always reply and follow up even if you don’t intend to stay there or if your plans change.

Spain Work Exchange Alora Campo HelpX

My experience on workaway in Spain

During my HelpX in Spain, I was asked for a small donation for food which is not often the case, but the work we did for them was also less than expected in many work exchanges.

This was agreed upon before I arrived, but you should normally not be expected to pay anything.

As for the work, we stacked wood, planted seedlings, walked the dogs and kept the communal and outdoor areas clean. Easy work in exchange for staying in an amazing place!

They were willing to realise that, at heart, we were travellers wanting to experience the country around us. Travel really  teaches us how to make the most of opportunities .

I was so grateful that during my work exchange, we had time off to visit Malaga , Alora, and El Chorro with their help.

I couldn’t recommend taking part in a work exchange enough! Travelling in this part of the Spanish countryside would not have been possible without HelpX and the work in exchange for accommodation opportunity.

My HelpX in Spain experience in the Alora Campo was a once in a lifetime that can never be recreated, especially because of the amazing people I met there.

Have you completed a work exchange with HelpX, Workaway or Woofing? Is it something on your travel list?

The place looks fancy! thanks for sharing this, will check it out!

It was a pretty typical Andalusian house :). But they had added in the pool area since it gets so hot in Spain! I really loved doing HelpX and it’s definitely something I can recommend. Let me know how you get on!

Thank you! If you have the time I highly recommend looking up HelpX and giving it a go! There are so many great places in Spain and it doesn’t have to be a long stay. So glad to hear you love it, I’ll have many more posts coming soon!

My first HelpX experience was in a small village in Andalucia as well! 🙂 Ever since, the place has a very special place in my heart! http://www.myfeetaremeanttoroam.com/helping-out-in-a-hotel/

Thanks for sharing your experience Els! I think I might have even looked at this one too. Andalusia is such an amazing place I can’t wait to spend more time there!

Sounds like you had an amazing experience. We used workaway a lot while we were in South America- with varying degrees of success! Ultimately these work exchange things are a great way to save money, meet people and make yourself a semi-valid member of a community for a while!

I agree they’re a great way to save money and be able to meet locals and have that more local experience. I loved it and I hope I’ll be in a position to do it again soon! I’d be interested to hear more about your experiences with it in South America 🙂

Which city should I choose?

Whichever city you would like to visit first! Just because you choose one city to start your trip in doesn’t mean you have to stay there for the full year, so why not explore all three? Madrid is the capital of Spain and one of the busiest cities in the country. With a large population of both Spanish and international residents, this city has a rich history and is home to many museums and musicals. Authentic Spanish food is easy to find, and prices tend to be reasonable here. Meanwhile, Barcelona is a diverse and cosmopolitan city that is popular with tourists. It is home to several beaches and is within driving distance of the stunning Costa Brava and a few historic UNESCO-protected monuments. For stunning Gothic architecture and the home of paella, Valencia is the place to be. This is a very popular University city, with many young locals living there. Finally, Malaga has an amazing Arts scene, and was the birthplace of Pablo Picasso! With beautiful beaches right on your doorstep, this is the perfect base for exploring the Costa del Sol.

How many hours of language instruction do I get?

Our program fee includes 40 hours of small group language lessons over the course of two weeks. However, the student accommodation and other facilities provide the perfect opportunity for you and your classmates to continue practicing outside of class! Additional weeks of class can also be arranged if desired.

by Dan Elias Bliss - Last updated on February 7, 2020

What if you could travel the world and leave your impact by helping to make it a better place? Well luckily for you, volunteer programs in Spain allow you to do just that! Spain isn’t a country where every town and city is the same, and extraordinary volunteer opportunities in Spain exist all over the country. Spain is also an incredibly English-friendly country, making it perfect for foreign students and young professionals to come volunteer, even if they don’t have strong Spanish skills.

Cityscape, Barcelona

With so many cool places to explore, you’re bound to find life-changing volunteer programs in Spain.

Volunteer opportunities in Spain aren’t limited to just a few causes. There are hundreds of different causes you can volunteer for and Spain has many of those opportunities. While one volunteer program may have you teaching English, another may have you working to help local populations, saving the whales, and so much more! Spain is the country guaranteed to have any and every opportunity you could dream of.

Can I volunteer in Spain for free?

No program abroad is 100 percent free. It doesn’t matter whether you’re studying, interning, or volunteering abroad — there will be some costs associated with the program. Most costs are going to cover your housing and in some cases will also include cultural events or even language classes.

Some programs and types of adventures abroad cost more than others. However, there are plenty of volunteer programs in Spain that are friendly on the pocketbook; a few even offer free housing in exchange for work! No matter what field you’re looking to volunteer in, there are plenty of affordable volunteer opportunities in Spain for you.

Work & Travel Programs

Work & Travel programs   are  designed to help support our travelers who  elect to travel on a temporary work visa. The idea behind the program is to help our travelers secure employment so they can fund their travels and cultural immersion experience.

These programs provide an ample amount of support and are a service for those who don’t feel comfortable finding work on their own.   Programs  often include  arrival orientations, job and housing s upport , 24/7 in-country staff and other perks like insurance, visa assistance, and an alumni community. Each program has its own inclusions, so be sure to read the specific details for the program you’re interested in.

Working Holiday Visa

What is a Working Holiday Visa?

This is a visa that allows individuals to work  (and sometimes study)  without undergoing the process of employer sponsorship. In other words, those who enter a country utilizing a working holiday visa are not tied to a single employer.

Am I Eligible?

These are the  visa  eligibility requirements mandated by most government entities (this may vary based on citizenship):

  • Citizen of one of the following: USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, EU
  • Be between the ages of 18-30 years old  (up to 35 for some countries excluding the USA)
  • Must be outside of  the country while undergoing  the visa application process
  • Must have a valid passport with an expiration date that exceeds the Working Holiday visa end-date by at least 6 months

***Your citizenship country must have a standing Working Holiday Agreement with the country you intend to work in (i.e. New Zealand, Australia, or Ireland).

***If you are unsure if you are eligible for the Working Holiday visa, please email us!

How long is the validity of the visa?

This visa is valid for up to a year!

When Should I Apply?

You should apply for your  Working Holiday  visa  at least  two months before your program start date to give the consulate enough time to award your work permit. It is great to apply in advance, but also note that in most cases after the visa is awarded, you’ll have 6-12 months to enter the country and activate the visa. If you apply too early, your visa can expire.

Don’t worry! We have built the timing of the visa application process into your Work & Travel program; we will advise you when to apply!

Why Would I Pay to Work?

These types of  programs don’t have direct government funding, so t raveler s who want to  work   abroad  must cover some of their own expenses. When programs cost money, we do try to keep them as cheap as possible (we are a non-profit!) ,  but there are some costs associated with running a program when it does not have any direct funding. Depending on the country and program you choose, you could make money in the end, it all depends on what type of experience you want to have.

Program fees also go toward you! We have airport pickups, orientations, and a pre-departure package with some Greenheart swag and other perks depending on the program. Program staff will be available to answer any questions before and after arrival. Read more here.

  • 33 years of experience with cultural exchange programs
  • Friendly, responsive, and professional support from  program managers with experience working abroad .
  • Our alumni recommend us! GoOverseas.com Reviews // GoAbroad.com Reviews
  • We make our program fees as inclusive as possible.
  • Connect with alumni and others on the program via our Greenheart Travel only Facebook forums ,  before you even leave!
  • Exclusive access to the Greenheart Atlas, our interactive program that will guide you through your cultural immersion experience before, during, and after your program
  • Hands-on support and personal attention every step of the way
  • 24/7 emergency phone number to reach a staff member at any time
  • Pre-departure “Culture Shock and Adjustment” Webinar before you leave
  • T-shirt and other  Greenheart merchandise
  • Discounts for future Greenheart Travel programs
  • We are a non-profit, mission-based organization
  • Continued support throughout your  work program

Program FAQs

Can I bring a pet or child?

No, you cannot bring your children or pets. The programs are not structured to accommodate dependents as there are many other logistics to keep in mind that we cannot guarantee we can meet. If you are bringing a pet or child with you abroad, it may be best to consider finding work on your own so you can guarantee proper housing, childcare, schooling, etc.

Can I apply with a friend, spouse, or significant other?

Yes, you can apply together! However,  whether  you will end up being placed together depends on the country and your flexibility. We guarantee that can place people together for  Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland.

Will I be alone?

This depends on the program.

Australia and New Zealand are designed as group experiences with large Welcome Weeks. Of course, when you begin working it is your choice whether you would like to stick with friends or pursue your own travel experience solo!

Ireland and Argentina Work & Travel are programs that are designed around the individual. Start dates are largely determined around when the traveler  is able to  arrive in the country, which means you may arrive alone.

The Thailand Marketing program is a competitive internship with limited placements. How many interns we accept depends on how many available positions we have; you can be the only intern.

Can I choose where I’d like to work in the country I’m going to?

Most  Work & Travel programs  allow you the flexibility to choose  where you’d like to live and work.  In the case of Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland Work & Travel you may choose where you’d like to be based. You can even move and work in multiple areas throughout the country!

Family & Friends Support

We understand that a Work Abroad experience is a big step for everyone involved. For this reason, upon acceptance to all Greenheart Travel programs we provide the following support materials that we  encourage our travelers to share with their loved ones: program orientation packet (includes all details of the program), emergency contact numbers, and insurance documents.

How do I contact my loved one who is working abroad?

In  most cases, our programs include a local SIM Card for your loved one’s smartphone. The SIM card will allow for purchasing of data, text, and call plans. Additionally, mediums like Facetime, Whatsapp , Facebook Messenger, and Skype are widely available in all Work & Travel locations so you and your loved one can stay in touch!

Can I visit my loved one during the Work & Travel program?

This is a program-specific answer. For Work & Travel Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland you are more than welcome to visit your loved one as these programs run for longer durations (up to a year).

For programs such as Argentina and Thailand, we recommend planning your visits for the end of the 3-month work program when your loved one is likely to have more free time and  is likely to  do a bit of traveling.

My loved one is a young adult applying for a Work Abroad program, can I attend the interview or call in for my loved one?

Like any travel abroad experience, Work  Abroad  programs are challenging and do require our travelers to be independent critical thinkers. Greenheart Travel  applicants  will interview with employers abroad face-to-face, so the initial program interview  with Greenheart Travel  should  be  seen as  preparation for work interviews abroad. Applicants must  prepare and  attend this alone (without friends, family, or loved ones) as they would with any job interview.

Work Abroad Q&A calls are reserved for potential Greenheart Travel applicants who are eligible only when they are an adult (18+) . In our experience, chatting with both a loved one and applicant separately can lead to miscommunication. Additionally, if an applicant is to work abroad, this individual needs to have a complete understanding of all the steps we took to get there and must be able to communicate with our staff directly.

If you are a loved one of a current  applicant  and you have questions that have not been addressed ,  please ask the applicant to email Greenheart Travel directly with those questions.

Every year we offer   scholarships   for our Work Abroad programs!

Application Process

Please note the process is a little bit different for each program. For  most  programs, however, the process is as follows.

1.   Start Your Application  Here .  You will be sent more information as well as the link to our application portal to begin your formal application.

2. Submit Basic Program Information:  The first step in our application portal will be basic things like your chosen start date, etc.

3. Submit your deposit :  A $300 deposit is required in order to apply for the program. This is subtracted from your total program fee. If we are unable to accept you following your interview (very unlikely!) we will refund your deposit  in full.

4.   Complete Application & Documents :  Provide more detailed information about yourself in Part 2 of the application. In this section, you’ll tell us more information like your work history, motivations for joining the program, travel history, and emergency contacts. You will also submit your documents (below) within your portal account.

5.   Skype Interview:  Once you have submitted your online application and paid your application deposit, you will be asked to schedule a video interview with a Greenheart Travel representative.

6. You’re Accepted!  Woohoo! We are usually able to accept people within 1-2 weeks of their interviews.

7. Commitment Deposit:  Once you are accepted to the program, you will need to submit a $300 commitment deposit within 14 days to confirm your spot on the program. Once you submit your commitment deposit you will unlock the acceptance portion of your portal, which includes things like pre-departure videos, travel and arrival information, the Greenheart Travel Atlas, and more.

9. Book your flights, and get ready for your adventure!  Your final remaining balance will be due 60 days before you leave.

Not sure where to start?

Paid Work Abroad: J-1 Visa, Teach, Au Pair, Work and Travel Programs

Sarah

By Sarah Vandenberg

paid work abroad programs

Updated for 2024

Did you know there are lots of different ways to explore the world and earn some income while you’re at it? From  teaching abroad , to au pair programs, to working abroad, and paid “ immersionship ” programs, there are plenty of opportunities to visit a new destination without tapping into your savings. Plus, these programs will let you build your resume and make a difference on your adventure abroad. Let’s take a look at a few of the most common paid travel opportunities.

We’re excited to feature First Things Foundation , which is a non-profit organization that offers two-year, fully-paid immersionships to Guatemala, Sierra Leone, Mozambique, and the Georgia Republic.

Paid Teach Abroad Programs

There are many different opportunities to earn money while teaching abroad, especially if you are  certified to Teach English as a Foreign Language : you can visit some of the most beautiful countries in the world and teach in cities or even in remote locations where teachers are limited and schools are overcrowded. Many teach abroad programs have placements open to students on a gap year or just a summer break, graduates on a career break or extended vacation, and anyone else that’s interested in spending time abroad helping to educate others. Your break could become a working holiday. English teaching abroad is the most common program you’ll find, though any opportunity you take will allow you to help create cultural connections, whether you’re working in another country with children or adults. For example, International TEFL Academy (ITA) offers the gold standard in TEFL certification for teaching English abroad & teaching English online . They provide the finest internationally accredited TEFL courses both online and in-person in 20+ locations across the globe. ITA certifies 5,000 people per year, and our graduates are teaching in over 80 countries & online.

Au Pair Programs

Au pair – French for “on par” or equal – programs are designed for travelers who’d like to stay with a host family and help care for the children and the house. Au pairs are given a weekly paycheck, and live as part of the family, usually taking on a variety of household responsibilities in addition to caring for children. When applying to become an Au pair, you can fill out a description of yourself showcasing your experience, the number of children you’re willing to work with, and the ages you’d like to work with. Au pairs do not have to be certified or have a degree, but are given extensive training before being placed with a family.

Work Travel Programs

From farming to teaching, there are many different programs to chose from when it comes to work travel. As you may expect, most of the popular ways to work and travel are teaching English to local schools and to businesses whose employees increasingly need to learn the language to interact with clients, vendors, and customers worldwide. However, there are lots of other ways to have a working holiday and earn some income while traveling, including farming and agriculture, seasonal tourism, hotel work, office jobs, and lots more.

J-1 Visa Programs

The J-1 Visa exchange program offers approximately 300,000 participants from more than 200 countries and territories to visit the United States every year with over 1,400 designated U.S. sponsors involved in the program. Participants can teach, study, conduct research, share specialized skills, and/or receive on-the-job training for anywhere between a few weeks to several years. J-1 Visas most commonly include a large cultural component, so participants can become more engaged with U.S. citizens while simultaneously sharing their culture. There are many different companies and organizations that participate in the J-1 Visa program – to learn more about these opportunities, visit http://j1visa.state.gov.

Cultural Homestays

Cultural homestays give you the chance to stay with a family in a country other than your own. As you participate in a work abroad program or paid teach abroad experience, you’ll be able to immerse yourself in a new culture while completing your project or program. Similar to the experience of an exchange program, through a cultural homestay, you’ll become a member of the family as you help around the house, learn the family’s way of life, and even teach your host family and friends all about the culture of your own country through your actions and stories. This is a phenomenal way to get the most out of your experience in a new country!

Ready for an adventure abroad? Read on to learn all about some amazing organizations that will pay you to travel and make a difference!

First Things Foundation

Peace Corps Alternative - First Things Foundation

As a First Things Foundations “field workers”, all of your travel expenses will be fully covered and you will also be paid a monthly stipend during your two-year “immersionship”.

First Things Foundation (FTF) is a non-profit organization that partners with local leaders to build sustainable businesses and communities in developing countries. FTF is different from other volunteer organizations in that its field workers (international volunteers) commit two years of their lives to living in the communities they are serving; all expenses are fully covered by the program . This allows field workers to develop deep relationships with the people they are working with and to better understand the needs of the community.

FTF has 15 projects in 4 countries ( Guatemala , Sierra Leone , the Republic of Georgia , and Mozambique ). These projects are all led by locals in the communities that FTF works in. FTF’s field workers have worked on a variety of projects, including starting businesses, building schools, and providing healthcare. FTF field workers are not afraid to get their hands dirty: working on farms, sanding wood, and kneading dough are some of the ways that they integrate into the local community and become familiar with a new rhythm of life.

FTF covers all travel costs and operations expenses (food, local transport, accommodation, etc.) for its field workers. In addition, field workers receive a monthly stipend of $375. FTF also has international medical and evacuation insurance for all of its field workers.

FTF is looking for volunteers with a desire to better their souls by undertaking a serious challenge, an adventurous attitude, and a willingness to learn new languages, make fun of themselves, and be made fun of. Field workers typically have completed 4 years of college or have an equivalent amount of experience. If you are looking for a challenging and rewarding volunteer experience, the First Things Foundation volunteer program is a great option. FTF field workers have the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of others and to learn and grow in ways that they never thought possible.

Global Vision International

teach English in Thailand with GVI

Right now,  Global Vision International  (GVI) is offering you a wonderful opportunity to  teach in Thailand . Once you complete GVI’s comprehensive orientation weekend or its 120-hour TEFL course, you can embark on this life-changing experience. In Thailand, teachers are extremely well-respected because it is a necessity for children to learn English. By learning English, these children can secure a good education and future job, and you can play a part of their achieving that success. Through this program, you not only get a wonderful cultural experience, but you also can save money for future traveling endeavors. You will earn between 25,000 to 35,000 Baht (approximately $700 to $1000 USD) per month.

The program itself costs $1,000 but includes the following: comprehensive pre-departure support, airport pickup for orientation and training in Chiang Mai, placement matching service, shared accommodation, welcome dinner, deals during orientation weekend, assistance with paperwork, local SIM with Thai phone number, GVI t-shirt, and several other accommodations.

If you’re wondering how to work abroad, this is a good program to look into. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a recent graduate, on a gap year, taking a break in your education, or simply looking to have a one-of-a-kind experience abroad: this is an amazing opportunity that will stand out on your resume. You’ll gain greater independence, leadership skills, and responsibility, and have the opportunity to meet and work with people from all over the world.

To learn more about this program, please visit  http://www.gviusa.com/paid-teaching/paid-teaching-in-thailand/ .

What Volunteers Say

I have volunteered twice with GVI and in both cases the experiences are still very much with me. I had a fantastic time, got to meet some amazing people and see some really beautiful parts of the world. I felt entirely safe and looked after, right up from the moment that I booked to the point where GVI put me (sadly) on the plane to come back to the UK. I would recommend GVI as a voluntary organisation to anyone and everyone – just make sure you don’t book for too short a while because once you get out there you won’t want to come back.

International TEFL and TESOL Training (ITTT)

take a TEFL course and teach English abroad

Since 1993,  International TEFL and TESOL Training (ITTT)  has been one of the world’s leading TEFL and TESOL course providers. ITTT offers high-quality training through an  online course ,  in-class courses  in 27 different countries, and a  combined course , with more than 100,000 graduates to date. With worldwide accreditation, ITTT offers lifetime job support for all students who successfully complete their programs, including job leads, employer databases, CV and resume review, and much more. Online courses start at $249, in-class courses start from $1,490 for four weeks, and combined courses start from $1,195.

ITTT’s internationally accredited  online TEFL courses  open up opportunities for working in another country. Plus, they’re open to students of all learning styles, allowing you to earn TEFL certification from home, at your own pace, and with or without tutor support. Courses range from 60-hour introductory programs, to 50-hour specialized ones, to 250-hour TESOL diploma classes. If you’d rather earn your TEFL or TESOL certification abroad, check out ITTT’s  in-class courses , which take place in more than 25 different locations across Australia, Greece, India, Japan, and beyond. These four-week classes provide an intensive and immersive experience, and are an excellent gateway to finding a job teaching English in the country of your choice. For example, ITTT’s  TEFL training center in Sydney  is a wonderful option for you to gain experience teaching in Australia, and then go on to teach in Asia (or anywhere else in the world).

And finally, if you want to  combine online training with an in-class experience , ITTT offers that option as well: you’ll start with a 120-hour online education program, followed by one to two weeks of onsite training. For the online segment, you’ll learn about language awareness, teaching theory, and general methodology, and after that, you can take a 5-day in-classroom course in one of more than a dozen locations in the US or Canada, or an 8- to 10-day program in Spain, Thailand, Italy, France, or the US. You’ll receive full TEFL certification after successfully completing both portions of ITTT’s combined course.

If you’re inspired to travel abroad and build your skill sets, there are plenty of amazing opportunities to choose from, and lots of high-quality organizations that will help you find the right program and earn some income.

Trip itinerary, why choose us, how it works, spanish in barcelona (under 30's).

11 others looking at this too. Next opening is May 2024 , with limited spots.

Learn to speak Spanish – as you become a local in your neighbourhood  – while living in the heart of Barcelona for up to 12 weeks on this unforgettable trip.

What better way to learn a language than to jump right into the deep end? Engaging with the community as you live like a local in one of the most passionate countries in the world.

On this done-for-you trip, you’ll get everything you need to live in Barcelona while learning Spanish, including:

  • Small group classes. You’ll be in a small class of students between 18 – 30 years old. You’ll get plenty of personal attention from your tutor in your relaxed, but structured, classes.
  • Accommodation included . You’ll stay in a shared apartment with your own room. Or upgrade to a homestay with a local family, shared student accommodation, or private residence.
  • Local activities. Designed to get you acquainted with your neighbourhood and immersed in Spanish culture ASAP! Includes tango classes, pizza nights, football matches, wine tastings and more!

Explore that famous Spanish culture – shaped by the Romans, Moors, and Catholic Monarchs over centuries – as you slowly become a part of it.

The full-of-flavour cuisine, the era defining art, the effortlessly cool Mediterranean beaches – you’ll probably want to call Spain home forever.

So a good start would be to learn the language while you live amongst the locals.

Can you imagine your life in Spain? The Spanish zest for life is contagious and you’ll find yourself getting swept up in the culture that plays out on the streets – cafes on the sidewalks, a flamenco lesson in the park, a busker on a street corner.

Living among a Spanish community means your Spanish skills are coming along FAST. And you’ve got a whole new community of Spanish locals to practise with.

You’re not only learning how to speak Spanish by day, but you’re getting to practise on your new neighbours by night!

Not to mention – your Spanish speaking skills open up a whole new world of travel experiences. Locals LOVE when foreigners have a go at speaking the language. So if you’re putting whole sentences together – complete with regional colloquialisms and slang – you’ll be the most popular traveller in Spain.

This trip is perfect for you if you’d like to scratch beneath the surface on your trip to Spain. You’ll be fully immersed in the community while learning the language so you can experience the real Spain.

When you book with Global, you book with the best. You get the full experience for a fraction of the hassle. We offer the complete package for learning Spanish in Barcelona.

The best (and most enjoyable) way to learn a language is by immersing yourself in a foreign culture. Still, we're all human here, and we understand how daunting it may be to just throw yourself into it. This trip has been meticulously planned to make sure you are as comfortable as possible before venturing on your way to Barcelona.

You may be confident that you have our utmost support. Before you depart, a Trip Coordinator will be able to provide assistance, and there will be a dedicated staff on the ground to make sure everything goes smoothly and that you never feel uncomfortable or out of place in your new Spanish home. Barcelona has a single international airport, Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport, where a private transfer will be waiting to pick you up and take you to your accommodation as soon as you land.

Arrive in Barcelona knowing for sure that you will be miles ahead of any other traveller looking for a unique European experience. The school you'll be attending lies in Dreta de l'Eixample, a neighbourhood characterised by iconic Antoni Gaudi structures, including La Sagrada Familia, Casa Batlló, and La Pedrera.

Travellers under the age of 30 are placed in classes and typically assigned lodgings with people of the same age, making it even easier to blend in and integrate into the group. You will experience authentic settings in the classroom with native speakers who will help you with the more conversational aspects of Spanish. Once your course is over for the day, you are free to explore the lively city and make it your home away from home. Along with a daily leisure programme, weekly outings, and a certificate of accomplishment, all teaching materials will be provided.

A trip like this is great for your portfolio, CV, and personal development as you form lifelong connections and expose yourself to multiple cultures and diversity.

Requirements

This trip is for travellers aged 18-29.

What extra costs will I have?

Flights, travel insurance, souvenirs, daily subsistence, study materials, Visa, special dietery requirements, extra activities, & spending money.

You’ll stay in a shared apartment with your own room.

Alternatively, you could upgrade to a homestay with a local family, shared student accommodation, or a private residence.

The beauty of this trip is that you’re not just going to learn the language, you’re going to learn the culture too. Our partners know this and have built a range of excursions to help you and designed an education structure with lots of time to explore Barcelona as you wish.

You'll take a quick online oral and written test two weeks before leaving on your journey. This will let the institution know what level of Spanish you comprehend, enabling them to put you in the appropriate class. Whatever the outcome, you'll be placed in a class with other students under the age of 30 so that you can comfortably relate to your new fellow companions.

Our Study trips are designed to get you set up in your new life overseas – learning new skills from the locals –  as smoothly as possible. Our goal is to save you time, money, and stress while eliminating the risk of returning home early. Here’s how we do it:

We’re with you from the moment you get started. You’ll be assigned a dedicated Trip Coordinator. They’ll guide you through the next steps and answer all your questions. They’ll also help you with the pesky visa. No guesswork – only the right paperwork, approved the first time, in your hands before you leave.

Your Personal Travel Concierge will help with flights, insurance, visas, and any add-ons you’d like for your trip. These are real humans too – no robots here.

Once you land in Spain our local team will be waiting for you at the airport. You’ll be taken straight to your initial accommodation in Barcelona.

But our support doesn’t end there. We’ll be in touch during your trip to make sure everything is going smoothly. If you have any questions or concerns we’re one quick message, DM, email, or carrier pigeon away.

Our team is well travelled so you can rely on our experience. We’re with you every step of the way.

The main purpose of this trip is to get you speaking Spanish like a local while you live like a local. Which makes this trip perfect for those who want to connect more with the country, instead of simply stopping in for a visit.

Our in-country partner’s teaching style is about learning Spanish for real situations, not a load of useless phrases and big words. It’s conversational Spanish – the same way normal people speak in Spain.

These classes won’t teach you formal Spanish with strict rules and fancy words. It’s all about being able to communicate with Spanish people in Spanish, so you can let the Spanish culture become part of you as you get to know it more intimately.

One of the many reasons you’re encouraged to strike up conversation with locals after hours – even if you’re a newbie.

Living amongst the community while you’re learning the language will fast track your path to success. It will also help you integrate into the community so you’ll get to know Spain much better than most tourists.

You’ll be grouped together with people in the same age range, making it easier for you to become a tight knit crew that explores Spain together.

Due to travel restrictions, requirements, and limited pet-friendly accommodations among our host organisations, we regretfully cannot facilitate their inclusion in the journey. In most cases, if you cannot travel on your selected date, you can place your trip on hold to deal with whatever is holding you back, and continue in the future without incurring any penalty. You may also have the option of transferring to an entirely different trip and destination as well, or even transferring your trip to a friend or family member. In the event that you need to outright cancel your trip, if you give us 84* days notice you can do so with only a 50% cancellation fee. Your refund of the balance will come in the form of a Store Credit which you can put toward any other trip that we offer, including tours through third-party providers, as well as holidays through DealsAway.com, and is valid for 2 years from date of issue. As international travel can be complex, your options are based on the progress of your trip organisation and our support team can assist you in finding the best solution for your needs.

If you're considering studying abroad in Spain , you're in for a treat. Home to mouthwatering tapas, captivating Flamenco dancing, entertaining bullfights, and rich art, literature, and architecture, this warm and welcoming country is the ideal location to pursue your study abroad dreams.

In fact, Spain is such a prime study abroad destination that we offe r 27 different Spanish study abroad programs  here!

To help you discover the best Spain program, we’ve compiled a CIEE-approved guide to s tudying abroad in Spain . This is an excellent resource for those thinking about Spain, as well as for those who are about to head that way.

Why Study Abroad in Spain

According to the Institute of International Education’s Open Doors report , Spain is one of the top study abroad destinations for U.S. students – and it has been for well over two decades.

And, it’s no surprise. This laid-back country is made for adventurous students – like you – who want to dive deeper into:

  • The language . There is no better way to learn a language than by immersing yourself in it. Studying abroad in Spain gives you the opportunity to hear, speak, write, and read Spanish , morning ‘til night. There’s no way you won’t improve your Spanish language skills – one of the most popular languages spoken on Earth.
  • The culture. Spain is a famously inviting country rich in culture, history, cuisine, and a whole lot more. And, of course, it boasts an incredible art scene with some of the greatest collections and masterpieces in the world.
  • The food. You could choose Spain solely for its food. We won’t judge you – it’s that good. While it’s of course known for paella , our alums favor the country’s c alçots , escalivada , g azpacho andaluz , and many more delicious dishes.
  • The climate. Yes, the weather varies between cities . Southern cities, like Seville or Malaga, tend to be milder than northern cities like, Madrid or Barcelona . But overall, Spain offers a lovely Mediterranean climate with hot summers perfect for spending time at the beach.
  • The affordab ility . Depending on your program, your housing, excursions, study tours, and tuition will all be included in your CIEE fee. But honestly, the cost of living in Spain is quite affordable. Cheap eats are readily available. And, you can travel about using Spain’s low-cost, highly efficient public transit system.

How to Study Abroad in Spain

As we noted earlier, CIEE offers close to 30 different ways you can study abroad in Spain. How you do it is entirely up to you. To get you on the right track, we recommend you ask yourself the following five questions:

  • Why do I want to study abroad in Spain ? Maybe to experience the culture, or further your Spanish language skills. Maybe it’s to boost your resume or develop practical skills as an international intern. Determine your “why” first and foremost. After that, the rest will start falling into place.
  • How long do I want to go abroad? You may have a lot of flexibility in your schedule, or maybe you don’t. Fortunately , we offer programs that are as short as 20 days, as long as 18 weeks, and a lot of others in between.
  • What program makes the most sense for my goals and degree? Below we go into our amazing program options in Spain .
  • Am I eligible? Different programs have different requirements, such as GPA, language skills, etc. Don’t get your heart set on the program until you check these requirements.
  • Can I afford it? Our fees go a long way and typically cover tuition, tours, excursions, orientation, on-site support, airport meet-and-greet, and more. We also offer millions of dollars in scholarships and grants each yea r, based on financial need and merit. Your college’s study abroad advisor may also know of other avenues of financial support. Be sure to reach out to them for more information and guidance.

Study Abroad in Spain Tips

You’ll make the most of your study abroad experience in Spain if you go into it well-prepared. To help, we offer the following tips from students who’ve already been there and done that.

Know some Spanish.

Many of our students are proficient in the language, but not all. If you are in the latter group, don’t worry. But we do recommend learning some basic Spanish before you arrive. This will help make your Spanish immersion experience more fun and more authentic from the very start.

Use your Spanish.

If your Spanish is newly acquired, use it. If your Spanish is rusty, use it. Don’t be afraid, just do your best. You’ll be surprised at how proficient your Spanish language skills will be by the end of your stay.

Take the tours.

This may be your once-in-a-lifetime chance to see the Picasso Museum, Basilica de la Sagrada Familia, or Mediterranean Sea. Don’t miss out!

Keep a journal .

Handwritten. Vlog. Blog. However you want to capture your daily experiences, do it. It’s the best way to keep track of the memories you won’t want to forget.

Bring comfortable shoes.

You are going to walk a lot . We offer more tips on packing below, but this one is worth mentioning twice! Trust us on this.

Think long-term.

Do you know that former participants have returned to Spain to work in a company where they previously interned in? True story. So, think long-term. Make connections. Build your network. And be open to whatever this life-changing opportunity brings .

Meet the locals.

Whether through a co-curricular club, local volunteer opportunity, becoming a regular at a nearby café, or all of it, immerse yourself in the community.

Embrace the unexpected.

If you wanted to stick to life at home, then you’d stay there. Instead, you’re choosing to study abroad to experience the way other cultures do life. So let yourself live like a local and embrace the new!

What to Pack for Study Abroad in Spain

Packing for your study abroad trip shouldn’t be stressful, but it’s important to cover your bases. Here are the must-haves when you study abroad in Spain .
