About hunting in North America

North America has some of the greatest hunting and some of the finest game animals found anywhere in the world. Hunting opportunities in North America are tremendous and vary greatly from whitetail hunting in Eastern hardwood forests to elk hunting in high alpine meadows of the Rocky Mountains to mule deer in the deserts of Sonora to muskox in the Canadian Arctic. The success of North America’s wildlife management is attributed to the “North American Model of Wildlife Conservation,” which relies on money generated by hunters, through licenses and a surcharge on the purchase of hunting gear, for the funding required to conserve and maintain game animals. Under this model, game animals in North America have made a tremendous comeback over the past century and thrive throughout the continent in record numbers today. Because hunting in North America is managed at the state and provincial level, hunting methods, traditions, ethics, and laws are different from one region to another. For example, black bears may be legally hunted over bait in some states and provinces, are hunted with dogs in others, and can be legally taken only by spot-and-stalk in others. It’s crucial to study the laws and regulations of the state or province you are hunting in. Wildlife agencies in each state and province generally have excellent, detailed websites where the information may be found.

Hunting trips: Bear

  • Elk Wyoming There's not much more exciting than being in the woods during the elk rut. Being in the presence of bugling bull elk will get any hunter's heart pumping. This episode of Bush TV will do just that!
  • Alaska Wolf Not your every day footage folks! A young wolf poking around in brown bear territory. Similar in size and behaviour (being social creatures), humans and wolves have always competed for food and territory.
  • Bison You wouldn't want to get between these tow fighting Bison!
  • Bighorn Sheep With Ewes in estrus, Bighorn Sheep Rams become very worked up and the Mating Dance ensues. Few people get to see this ritual up close.

Here's an up close and personal look a hunter got of this ritual for survival!
  • Wild Turkey The wild turkey is a favorite pursuit of many hunter's dreams. The wiley and elusive gobblers can test the most experienced and patient sportsmen. But in some cases their desire to mate and their bravado overpower their good senses. Check out this gang of gobblers taking out their frustrations on this hunter's Jake decoy!

Dream Hunts: 20 Incredible Big Game Hunting Trips

From moose hunts in Canada to monster mule deer hunts in the desert, here are our picks for 20 hunting trips to plan your greatest outdoor adventure ever

By The Editors | Published Mar 4, 2021 5:24 PM EST

Trophy bull elk bugles from a mountainside meadow

We know that big game hunting season is still months away, but just the idea of getting to travel more easily and safely this year already has us thinking about dream hunts. S we asked our experts to pick the best big game hunts in North America that the average hunter can actually pull off. To be clear: This isn’t another lists of cheap, DIY hunts (though some of these are easily taken on your own), nor is it a roundup of expensive outfitters. These trips are chosen for value. So, quit dreaming and start planning.

The 20 Best Hunting Trips for Your Budget

We’ve done the research—and taken many of these hunts ourselves—to create a list of the very best big game hunting opportunities and affordable hunting trips.

1. Where to Hunt Moose in Alberta

Big Country: Alberta Moose Hunting

Logistics: Once you secure a moose tag from your outfitter, you just need a passport to get into Canada, the proper paperwork to get a firearm across the border, and a Wildlife Identification Number (WIN) card to hunt Alberta. Price: $5,000 to $7,000 — Will Brantley

2. Hunt Record-Book Black Bears in Northern Saskatchewan

Why You Should Go: Huge swaths of northern Saskatchewan are only accessible by boat or plane. Up there, most black bears die of old age. A few outfitters are pioneering into areas where bears have never been hunted. This region has the genetics for giant boars; it may be the best opportunity anywhere to shoot a true trophy-class black bear. Logistics: The best hunting is in June. Licenses are only available through an outfitter. Hunters fly into Saskatoon, and then make the rest of the trip in vehicles, floatplanes, and boats via the outfitter. Price: $4,000 to $5,000 (Guided) — Brad Fenson

3. Travel to Kodiak Island, Alaska, for a Blacktail Deer Adventure

Why You Should Go: If hunting blacktail deer on the home turf of the world’s largest brown bears doesn’t get your adrenaline pumping, then we can’t help you. These true wilderness hunts are usually based from a boat that provides a dry place to sleep (and protection from bears). Good bucks abound here, and depending on the weather, you may find them anywhere from the beach to the high peaks. Logistics: The small planes and boats required to get to Kodiak make travel challenging. Transporters provide boats for D.I.Y. trips, but the hunting is up to you. Outfitted hunts are much more inclusive. Licenses are over the counter. For more information, go to adfg.alaska.gov. Price: $3,000 to $4,000 (Transported and unguided or guided) — B.F.

4. Stalk Giant Velvet Mule Deer in Alberta

Why You Should Go: Three-hundred-plus-pound muleys, close-range spot-and-stalk, and velvet antlers are indeed the stuff of dreams for most bowhunters: It’s what makes Alberta such a hot destination during the September bow season—and your odds only go up during gun season. The region is marked by rolling prairie, steep coulees, and a smattering of cropfields, making it the perfect place to grow trophy bucks, and to sneak up on them. Logistics: The only way to obtain a tag in Alberta is through an outfitter, but there are dozens in the region. The Alberta Professional Outfitters Society has a directory. Price: $3,000 to $4,000 (Guided) — B.F.

5. Why Idaho Is the Best State to Hunt Color Phase Black Bears

Idaho Spring Bear hunting

Why You Should Go: Idaho has one of the largest black bear populations in the Rocky Mountains, and a high percentage of color-phase bruins. From mid April through June, you can spot bears on south-facing slopes, munching on the green grass they need to flush their systems after hibernation. You can hire a guide, or spot-and-stalk from the dirt roads and trails coursing through national forest land for a rare D.I.Y. trophy. Logistics: There are plenty of tags available over the counter, and some units allow you to take two bears. There are dozens of reputable outfitters for both spot-and-stalk and baited hunts. Price: $2,000 to $3,000 (Guided); $1,000 to $2,000 (Unguided) — Ben Romans

6. Wyoming Pronghorns Is One of the Most Affordable Hunting Trips in the U.S.

Colorado and Wyoming pronghorn hunting

Why You Should Go: Wyoming has more antelope than people, and an array of hunting opportunities. To chase a trophy pronghorn, you can build points for a managed area. If you just want to hunt antelope, there are zones where you can draw every year or buy a leftover tag, of which there are usually plenty. You can hire a guide, hunt on public ground, or hunt private ground for a landowner fee—or in some cases for free with permission. Logistics: Wyoming begs for a D.I.Y. hunt, but there are plenty of good outfitters, too. Wyoming Game and Fish’s new Hunt Planner is an invaluable resource. Price: $2,000 to $3,000 (Guided); $1,000 to $2,000 (Unguided) — B.F.

7. Welcome to Axis Deer Paradise

Why You Should Go: If you’re after adventure, natural beauty, exclusivity, and the finest red meat on earth, then Lanai, a 90,000-acre private island 40 miles west of Maui, is the spot. You may see hundreds of animals in a day while hunting one of the world’s largest populations of free-range axis deer . There are mouflon sheep, too. The terrain is spectacular and diverse, with mountains, plains, and ocean vistas. Logistics: You’ll fly to Maui, Hawaii, then ferry to Lanai. The stunning Hotel Lanai is under $200 per night. Since the game is privately owned, you’ll pay an outfitter about $3,000 for one day (though bowhunters might need two) of guided hunting that includes a trophy stag and two non-trophies. Price: $3,000 to $6,000 (Guided) — Jeff Johnston

8. Chase Barren-Ground Caribou in Manitoba

Manitoba Central Barren Ground Caribou

Why You Should Go: Northern Manitoba borders Hudson Bay, and the mixed habitat along the shoreline is the historical migration route of central barren-ground caribou. This hunt won’t cost you much more than a D.I.Y. fly-in adventure in other parts of the North, but it’s logistically easier, and success rates on trophy bulls are much higher. Logistics: The region is only accessible by airplane, with licenses available through outfitters who take care of planning and details. Much of the hunting is done from boats, and from both permanent and spike camps. Price: $5,000 to $6,000 (Guided) — B.F.

9. Stalk Trophy Mule Deer in the Nebraska Sandhills

Why You Should Go: The Nebraska Sandhills are the up-and-coming place to kill a big mule deer buck. Miles of rolling hills are woven with creekbottoms and some agriculture. Like Alberta, it’s ideal habitat for growing big deer and for spot-and-stalk hunting—but more affordable, and with great D.I.Y. opportunities. Logistics: Permits are available via application, and most tags are good for either a mule deer or a whitetail (outdoornebraska.gov/huntingseasons). There are significant chunks of public land, along with some excellent outfitters for hunting private ground. Price: $3,000 to $4,000 (Guided); $1,000 to $2,000 (Unguided) — B.F.

10. Tag a 350-Inch Bull Elk in New Mexico

Why You Should Go: The Gila National Forest in southwest New Mexico is 3.3 million public acres of famously good elk hunting. Secure a tag and you have a solid chance at killing a 350-inch bull. The terrain is largely sandy, and full of pinyon and ponderosa pine. The climate is mild. Though some outfitters use horses to get deep into the backcountry, plenty of the Gila is accessible on foot. Logistics: New Mexico doesn’t award preference points. Nonresidents hunting solo are allotted 6 percent of the licenses in a drawing pool; nonresidents who book with a guide, 10 percent. You can apply as a party to help your chances, and a good outfitter can assist you with the process and put you on elk once you’ve drawn. According to the outfitters we polled, most hunters get drawn at least once every four years, so put in now. Price: $5,000 to $6,000 (Guided); $2,000 to $3,000 (Unguided) — W.B.

11. Plan the Ultimate Big Game Hunting Trip in Montana

Why You Should Go: Montana’s Bob Marshall Wilderness is one of the only places in the world where you can rifle hunt rutting elk, mule deer, black bears, and wolves all at the same time. Hunter success with a good outfitter runs about 50 percent, meaning that a hardworking hunter should take two of the four species during a 10-day hunt, with pretty good trophy potential. Logistics: Riding in via horseback takes a full day and can leave you too sore to hunt hard the next, so opting for a picturesque helicopter ride into “The Bob” is worth considering—and less costly than you may think. Contact an outfitter early to apply for tags, and you’ll almost surely draw. Price: $4,000 to $6,000 (Guided) — Joseph von Benedikt

12. Travel to Utah for One of the Best Mule Deer Hunts Ever

Trio of big mule deer bucks

Why You Should Go: Utah’s extended archery hunt offers a chance to chase rutting muley bucks on an easy-to-draw tag. Draw for any unit in the state (some regions are almost 100 percent odds even for nonresidents), but don’t hunt the regular season. Hold off and that unused tag will qualify you to hunt the archery-only area in the public-access Wasatch Mountains during late November and early December. There’s no rifle season here, allowing bucks to grow big and old. It’s arguably the best big-buck hunt in Utah short of drawing a premium tag, which can take decades. Logistics: You’ll need to earn an online-education certificate for this hunt, but it’s not difficult and well worth it. Prepare to glass big country, stalk up steep canyons in knee-deep snow, and shoot long. Price: $1,000 to $2,000 (Unguided) — J.v.B.

13. Chase Northwest Colorado Pronghorns

Why You Should Go: There are antelope all over the West. But if you’re after a true bruiser of a buck, few regions are better than northwest Colorado. Moffat County consistently produces more Booner speed goats than any other county in the state. The rolling landscape here has plenty of peaks and valleys for spot-and-stalk hunting, and numerous irrigated alfalfa fields and livestock operations for water-hole archery hunts. Logistics: You can apply for points, hunt the ample BLM ground in the area, and probably kill a giant buck in a couple of days—especially with a rifle. The best trophy units here can take up to 15 points to draw, though with a little research, you can get a tag within five years in units that are almost as good. If you’re going guided, a number of outfitters have tags for sale every year. Price: $3,000 to $4,000 (Guided); $1,000 to $2,000 (Unguided) — W.B.

14. How to Plan a D.I.Y. Coues Deer Hunt

Why You Should Go: These tiny gray deer live in lonely, high-desert country, and they behave—and are hunted—more like desert bighorn sheep than whitetails. Prepare to have your mettle tested against steep, remote mountains infested with thorns—and your soul renewed by a backdrop of shockingly beautiful desert sunrises and sunsets. Logistics: Tags are easier to draw during the November pre-rut than for the December rut hunt. If you’re willing to build points, you can eventually draw a tag for a unit offering a legit chance at mature bucks with big genetics, though it’s possible to draw every year in some less popular units. Check the Arizona Game and Fish for details. Price: $1,000 to $2,000 (unguided) — J.v.B.

15. Guide Hunts for Mountain Lions in Idaho and Colorado

Colorado and Idaho Mountain Lions

Why You Should Go: If you love the sound of hounds at work, intense physical challenge, and an element of danger, go on a mountain lion hunt. Both Colorado and Idaho have thriving cat populations, and the states are neck-and-neck for B&C entries. When the dogs strike a hot track, the experience is as intense as it gets. Logistics: Both states offer over-the-counter licenses and long seasons open to hunting with hounds, but you want to go later in winter. Ideally, you keep a flexible schedule with an outfitter and hunt after a fresh snow. Check regs closely; in Colorado, you must pass a free (but easy) online course before getting a license. Check quotas daily. And plan on bringing the meat home—it tastes just like pork. Price: $4,000 to $5,000 (Guided) — W.B.

8 Affordable Hunting Trips for the Budget-Minded Hunter

8 Affordable Hunting Trips for the Budget-Minded Hunter

Many people think that you need big-time money to go on a big game hunting trip. While money can certainly buy you some exciting hunting experiences, you don’t need to break the bank in order to have a great time hunting. Check out our list of affordable hunting trips so that you can find how to have a great time hunting on a budget!

Table of Contents

Hunt Elk in Idaho

Hunt whitetail deer in kansas, hunt antelope in wyoming, hunt turkey in nebraska, moose in alaska, south dakota mule deer, hogs in texas, black bear in idaho, make sure you’re fully equipped for your big hunt.

Idaho may not be the first state that many hunters think of when they think of elk habitats, but there are plenty of good bulls that call Idaho home. Plus, the state provides over-the-counter tags at a first-come, first-serve basis , meaning that anyone has the opportunity to score an elk tag.

In order to find land to hunt elk in Idaho, you want to search in grasses and agriculture fields. There’s a plethora of natural forests, state forests (which are public), and private lands that are a part of the Access Yes! Program . If you have a GPS and a general bearing of your surroundings, you should be able to track down a bull, stalk him and get your chance at a kill.

Why It Made the List

The main reason that Idaho elk hunting made the list is the fact that you can primitively camp in most national forests at no cost. This saves you a good amount of money on lodging, meaning you can save most of your money on the tag, license, and permit (around $600 total), food, fuel, and more.

Price: Less than $1,500

Many hunters have heard the lore of the giant whitetail deer that roam in Kansas — and the stories are true. The entire state is littered with trophy deer, and although the price of a tag is pretty expensive (near $450), the rest of the trip is incredibly affordable, which makes it a great option for anyone looking for one of the best hunting trips on a budget.

The state of Kansas is broken up into four different regions for deer hunting, and the tags are all available through a drawing process. Once you get your tag, there are plenty of options for how you hunt. Depending on your budget, you can cut costs by camping in a tent or an RV, or if you have a little bit of wiggle room, you can stay in hunting lodges or motels. Do your research and find a method that works best for you to get a cheap hunting trip put together!

Price: $500 – $1,000

Have you always wanted to try out hunting antelope in the United States? Wyoming provides you with plenty of opportunities to hunt down some speed goats without breaking the bank.

Wyoming is filled with state land and walk-in areas that you can hunt in. However, you’ll want to accumulate some preference points before you try for a tag since the tags can go pretty quickly. If you aren’t able to get a tag, there are leftover tags available, which will have less public land and less trophy potential, but still a good amount of antelope.

Wyoming is filled with different opportunities for you to hunt antelope at an affordable rate. You can find lodging at a campground for less than $25 per night, and if you prepare correctly (pack food ahead of time) and cut corners, you should be able to tag an antelope for a great price.

Price: $1,000 – $1,250

When it comes to getting a lot of game for your dollar, it’s hard to beat a turkey hunt in Nebraska. In the spring, you are allowed up to three birds per season, and a single turkey permit costs a little over $100. Plus, with modern-day technology and smartphones, you can purchase extra permits on your phone, meaning that you can hypothetically get all three turkeys in the same day for less than $350.

Single Bearded Turkey

If you’re looking for a cheap bow hunt, you’re not going to find many hunts that are more budget-friendly than a Nebraska turkey hunt. Once you’ve got your permits and your bow, the rest of the expenses are minimal. Most turkey hunting can be done on public land, and the state of Nebraska is relatively cheap in terms of lodging. As long as you don’t have to travel too far to get there, it’s an incredibly affordable trip to take.

Price: Less than $500

Many people would assume that any moose hunt would cost well over $3,000 — and when you mention that it’s in Alaska, you would think that it would cost $5,000+. While a tag and license do cost close to $1,000, if you’re willing to put a little bit of work in and walk for a ways, you can swing an entire moose hunt for closer to $2,000, which is a pretty cheap big game hunt.

Obviously, one of the most expensive parts of this hunt will be getting to Alaska. But, once you make it there, you’ll have to put some work in. Lace-up your boots and be prepared to stalk some moose — especially if you are looking for a bigger one.

Price: Around $2,000

Not only is there an abundance of mule deer in South Dakota, but there’s also an abundance in public land, and with reliable populations and relatively light hunting pressure, there are plenty of opportunities for you to get a mule deer without breaking the bank.

A deer license in South Dakota costs just south of $300, but once that’s been paid, you can be generally flexible with the rest of your expenses depending on how comfortable you want to be in your hunt. If you’re hunting near the national forests, you can find lodging for around $60/night. Take some time to do some planning and figure out when and where you want to go for your hunt.

Price: $1,400 – $1,600

Texas is a state unlike any other, so it’s only right that they have a hunting experience that’s completely unique. Not only can you hunt feral hogs in Texas, but you can do so at any time of the year and without a bag limit. Just purchase Item 157 (their “non-resident 5-day special hunting license) for a little less than $50 and you can hunt throughout the week!

There are some public hunting lands that you can utilize, but for the price, your best bet is to work through an outfitter and get put in a position to succeed. With such a low overhead cost and the affordable price of a license, spend the extra money on a good outfitter and make it the most productive week possible!

Price: $500 – $1000

A bear hunt may seem to be the pinnacle of pricey, but it doesn’t have to be! If you’re looking to hunt black bears in the Rocky Mountains, you can do so for a reasonable rate in Idaho from late spring to early summer.

If you want to keep the hunt under $2,000, you’ll have to go without a guide. Thankfully, there are plenty of tags available over the counter in Idaho, and some places even allow you to take two bears. Take to the national forest land and prepare to do some spotting and stalking for a while, but if you are patient, you should get the opportunity to find a nice bear.

Price: $1,500 – $2,000

Does one of these inexpensive hunting trips have you packing your bags and looking at dates? If so, you’ll want to make sure that you’re fully equipped for your big hunt! Expect a line to enter the building, and while you’re inside the building, you’ll be constantly moving in line with other visitors. This means you won’t be able to spend as long as you’d like viewing the mausoleum, but you’ll still be able to get a good look. Pictures and filming while inside the building are strictly prohibited, and security guards will stop you if they see you breaking this rule.

The mausoleum is only open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday – unless it’s a public holiday or a day scheduled for maintenance. The hours it’s open for each day are limited, make sure to check online before you visit to make sure you can fit this into your Moscow itinerary for that day!

Insider Tip: The Lenin’s Museum is there for people to pay their respect; remember to keep silent and move along quickly, it’s not intended for people to congregate around. Also, men are not allowed to wear hats and everyone must take their hands out of their pockets when inside the building.

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

Don’t Forget Your Travel Insurance for Moscow

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

Buses and minibuses in a parking lot. The sky is dark blue, and a few stars are visible.

Aurora Tourism in Iceland: You Can Seek, but You May Not Find

The country markets itself as a destination to see the northern lights — especially this year, which is a peak time for solar activity. But they can be elusive, as one writer recently found.

In Reykjavík, Iceland, aurora borealis tourism is a booming business. Hopeful tourists board buses to head out into the night in search of the northern lights. Credit... Sigga Ella for The New York Times

By Amelia Nierenberg

Amelia Nierenberg spent four nights searching for the northern lights in Iceland.

  • March 25, 2024

From the outside, it may seem like the northern lights dance across Iceland’s skies each night. On Icelandair ads, planes fly across shimmering curtains in the sky. On social media, travelers gaze at the green bands above them . The lights are even on some recycling bins in Reykjavík, the capital: “Keep Iceland Clean.”

In the past decade or so, an aurora borealis industrial complex has boomed in Iceland. Many rent a car and go out on their own, but there are northern lights big bus tours and northern lights minibus tours and northern lights Super Jeep tours . There are private guides and boat cruises . There’s an observatory base camp . There’s even a museum .

Tourists line up outside a red minibus in the twilight. Behind them, there is a light green statue that is illuminated.

But the lights can be elusive.

“Tourists sometimes expect, like, ‘At what time do you turn them on?’” said Björn Saevar Einarsson, a forecaster at Iceland’s meteorological office , chuckling. “Like we have a switch in the back room.”

This year, the letdowns are especially intense.

The northern lights, which are also called the aurora borealis, are most visible when there are solar flares, which are big eruptions on the sun that send charged particles toward Earth. This year, the sun is approaching the peak of its 11-year cycle of activity , which some assume means that the displays could peak, too.

But the enhanced solar activity doesn’t necessarily mean the northern lights will be brighter or more frequent, scientists wearily explain. Instead, they mostly mean that the lights can be seen farther south than usual: In recent months, they have been visible in Arizona , Missouri and southern England .

That doesn’t mean much for Iceland.

In fact, Icelanders and scientists said, this winter is nothing special. Sometimes, the lights are there. Sometimes, they aren’t. Just like always.

Hunting the lights

But nothing special, with the northern lights, is still very special. And so tourists keep coming .

Last month, I joined the fray. For four nights, I looked for telltale sky shimmers in and around Reykjavík.

I booked my tickets riding high — this was the best year yet, right? But as I learned more, and as my flight neared, my hopes ebbed. Scientists and tour leaders gently told me that the skies were cloudy and the solar activity seemed quiet.

“Just to let you know the forecast doesn’t look too good” Inga Dís Richter, the chief commercial officer at Icelandia , a tourism agency, wrote in an email two days before I planned to take a minibus trip with Reykjavik Excursions , one of its tour operators.

“But,” she added, “this can change.”

To find the lights, guides and travelers often rely on aurora forecasts, which overlay cloud cover and solar activity. They check them constantly, like a bride with an outdoor wedding in mid-April.

Some of the forecasts are free, like the aurora forecast run by Iceland’s meteorological office or Iceland at Night , which includes space weather. (Some are not — Aurora Forecast , which costs $12.99 a year, sends alerts.) Many people also turn to Facebook pages , where enthusiasts hungrily swap sightings.

Luck, though, is everything.

“There’s only one thing less predictable with the northern lights, and that’s the Arctic weather,” said John Mason, a global expert on the northern lights. “An aurora forecast is barely worth the paper that it’s written on.”

The guides work hard to explain the science, and set expectations. Most companies offer a free rebooking option if the lights do not show.

On my first night of aurora stalking, despite Ms. Richter’s warnings, I joined an expectant group on the Reykjavík Excursions minibus. For $88, I got a seat on the 19-person bus, which left the city’s central bus station at 9:30 p.m.

Over the next three to four hours, we would drive through the Icelandic night together. I’d either see something astonishing with these strangers — the sky, banded with light — or shiver with them shoulder-to-shoulder, awkward in the cold.

As we pulled onto the road, Gudjon Gunnarsson, the guide, set the mood early. “We are going hunting for the lights,” he said, emphasizing the word “hunting,” “similar to going out fishing in a lake.”

He drove for about 45 minutes, letting Reykjavík’s glow fade behind us. The city has about 140,000 people, and no real skyscrapers, so there’s limited light pollution. Although the northern lights can appear over the city, it’s best to see them in total darkness.

Then he paused and consulted with another guide.

“It is too cloudy here,” he told his flock. “So we will keep driving.”

But as we kept driving, clouds turned to a dense fog, so thick that the moon all but disappeared.

Mr. Gunnarsson turned off the main highway about an hour after we left Reykjavík. He parked in a parking lot. Or maybe it was a side street? The darkness was so deep that I could only make out the moonlight on the ocean, and only then after my eyes adjusted.

We disembarked and stood dutifully beside him, staring up at the sky. Then, one woman pointed toward Reykjavík. Were those the lights? (No. That was light pollution.)

Christof Reinhard, 65, who owns a medical laser company and was visiting with his family from Paris, mused that our search was a little bit like a safari. Sure, the desert is amazing, but it’s much better with lions. Or, maybe, was this more like a whale watch?

“Instead of a boat,” he said, “you have a bus.”

Mr. Gunnarsson watched the group stomp their feet and bend into the wind. Fifteen minutes. Then, half an hour. The clouds hung thick above. “There’s nothing happening here, as you can see,” he finally said to relieved chuckles. “It’s one of those nights where you just have to give up.”

Tourists can get mad, Mr. Gunnarsson and other guides said. It’s rare, but it does happen.

“It’s the trip that has our worst reviews,” said Eric Larimer, the digital marketing manager for Gray Line Iceland , a day tour and airport transport company.

A wake-up call for the aurora

For some, the joy is in the search, even if there is no find. A few focus on astronomy, often opting to stay at Hotel Rangá , which is just off the main ring road (Route 1) near Iceland’s south coast.

The hotel looks unassuming — low-slung and wooden — but it’s one of the most famous in Iceland. (The Kardashians stayed there . So did the Real Housewives of Orange County .) A standard room costs more than $300, depending on the season.

But Rangá doesn’t just cater to celebrities. It also draws astronomy buffs, enticed by its “aurora wake-up call” service and its observatory, which has state-of-the-art telescopes.

“One thing is to sell them,” said Fridrik Pálsson, the hotel’s owner, speaking of the northern lights. “Another thing is to deliver them.”

About 20 years ago, before the northern lights industry took off, he delegated the night security guard to monitor the sky. The guard pokes his head out every few minutes to look for the telltale flicker. If he sees the lights, he alerts the guests.

The service aims to address one of the main issues with hunting for the northern lights: They are usually only visible on winter nights, when it is very cold, very windy and very late.

“To be a good northern lights observer, you need the constitution of an insomniac polar bear,” Dr. Mason said.

My room phone, alas, stayed silent. But I did dream about the lights — great Wonka colors swirling, strangely, behind the Chrysler Building.

Mr. Pálsson built the observatory, too. Even if the lights didn’t show up, he figured, the stars are still magnificent — and, for city dwellers, also rare. The hotel contracts astronomers to work the telescopes and explain the stars to guests. On my second night in Iceland, as twilight slipped below happy-hour skies, I crunched across the snow to the observatory with Saevar Helgi Bragason, an Icelandic science communicator who leads the astronomy program.

He bent into a toddler-size telescope, focusing it on the moon’s craters. They looked clearer than the hotel, just a short walk away. It was too early for the lights, he said. And that evening seemed too cloudy (on Earth) and too quiet (on the sun).

Mr. Bragason joked that the lights can get in his way — they create a mist over the stars he really wants to see. But tourists often come specifically to see them. And sometimes, he said, as they wait impatiently, they can miss the real wonder.

“You’re left with these beautiful skies above you,” he said. “Basically, literally, another universe opens up.”

Creating a lights season

Hotel Rangá was a pioneer in Iceland’s northern lights tourism industry: About two decades ago, people came to Iceland for the long summer days, and left as daylight slipped farther south.

“I found it rather stupid in the beginning,” admitted Mr. Pálsson, the owner of Rangá, speaking of northern lights tourism.

But spreading tourism throughout the year made sense. Partly, that was an environmental concern. The tourists would crowd the country’s extraordinary natural sites over just a few months. It was also economic. When the visitors left Iceland, tourism jobs would ebb with the sunlight.

So the northern lights, which are reliably visible from September to March, became the backbone of the country’s winter branding, said Sveinn Birkir Björnsson, the marketing and communications director at Business Iceland , which promotes the country.

“To be able to sell this product of cold and darkness, you have to have something to offer,” he said.

Now, even though June, July and August are the busiest months, tourism has evened out over the seasons. In 2023, there were about 1.1 million international visitors to Iceland during the aurora months, based on departures from Keflavík Airport, according to data from Iceland’s tourist board . From April to August, there were about 1.1 million, too.

About a decade earlier , when tourism overall to Iceland was lower, there were about 336,000 departures from the main airport in colder months, and about 446,000 in the spring and summer.

The winter travelers are drawn by the lights — and the hot springs, glaciers and icy waterfalls. It’s also cheaper than the summer season.

Some try to visit volcanoes , but the country recently warned tourists to avoid the lava flows — Iceland is living in an unusually active period of seismic activity . In January, lava flowed into a small town and last week a volcano erupted with just 40 minutes’ notice near the Blue Lagoon thermal springs, one of the country’s biggest attractions.

The final attempts

Near midnight on my last night, a Sunday, I drove to the Grótta Lighthouse , a popular spot on the outskirts of Reykjavík.

A few die-hard experts had warned me off — many tourists go there because it’s darker than most of Reykjavík, but then don’t think to turn off their headlights. It was also raining, greatly diminishing my chances of seeing the lights.

But I only had three hours before I had to leave to make my predawn flight. I felt a little desperate, a little dazed. I parked, and approached two people who were sitting in the rain on a wet wall, looking at the water in the darkness. I climbed over seaweed, and introduced myself. What would it mean to them, I asked, if the lights suddenly appeared?

“It’d be a little bit like the cherry on top,” said Catherine Norburn, 29, who was visiting from England.

She and her husband were set to fly out the next morning. They had not yet seen the lights.

“We don’t have high hopes,” said her husband, Reece Norburn, 29, “but it’s now or never.”

We didn’t see the lights. And I didn’t see them later, even after pulling off the highway halfway between Reykjavík and the airport at 3:30 a.m., half convinced by a shimmery cloud.

But I did spend more time looking up at the sky. And it’s a marvel.

In New York City, where I live, the night sky blooms orange-mauve. In Iceland, the nighttime darkness is just that — darkness. Clouds roll, breaking the deep blue. Stars actually shine. Northern lights or no northern lights, it was still cosmically beautiful.

Devastation in Gaza as Israel wages war on Hamas

By Heather Chen and Sana Noor Haq, CNN

Israeli siege puts Al Amal Hospital "out of service," Palestine Red Crescent Society says

From CNN’s Xiaofei Xu

The Al Amal Hospital in Khan Younis, in southern Gaza is "out of service" after the Israeli military forced medical staff to evacuate the facility, Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) warned on Tuesday.

“The occupation forces forced the hospital teams to evacuate and closed its entrances with earthen barriers,” the organization said in a  statement  on X.

At least 27 PRCS staff and six patients were evacuated from the hospital, with help from the United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs. The bodies of two people who had been killed inside the hospital were included in the evacuation.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said “troops are continuing to conduct operational activity in the areas of Al Amal and Al-Qarara, eliminating terrorists and carrying out targeted raids on terrorist infrastructure,” on Tuesday.

CNN cannot independently verify the IDF's statement.

Israeli forces wounded displaced people sheltering at the hospital, who later died, the PRCS said on Sunday.

Remember: Hospitals are protected civilian objects under international humanitarian law. It is illegal, with few exceptions, to attack hospitals. A hospital can lose its special protected status only if it is used by an armed group for acts that are “harmful to the enemy.”

But, even if a hospital loses its special status, the wounded and sick inside are still protected by the principle of proportionality. A warning must be given, and time for safe evacuation, before carrying out an attack.

UK carries out first solo airdrop into Gaza

From CNN's Niamh Kennedy in London

Humanitarian aid is loaded onto a Royal Air Force aircraft in Amman, Jordan, in this handout released on March 26.

The UK carried out its first solo airdrop into Gaza on Monday, dropping over 11 tons of food aid into the besieged Palestinian enclave.

A Royal Air Force plane flew from Amman, in Jordan, to release the aid along the northern Gaza coastline "as part of the Jordanian-led international aid mission," the UK Ministry of Defence said on Tuesday.

The UK stressed its commitment to ensuring that the food aid, including "water, rice, cooking oil, flour, tinned goods and baby formula," reaches those who "need it most."

Aid distribution warnings: Humanitarian agencies have criticized airdrops as an inefficient and degrading way of getting aid to Gazans, urging Israeli authorities to lift controls on land crossings into the enclave.

"You're throwing aid into the wind to people who've been starving and have been denied humanitarian access. This will create chaos, predictably, and we cannot blame the people for that," the UN's special rapporteur for food, Michael Fakhri, told journalists in Geneva earlier this month.

There have been calls on allies of Israel, including the UK and the US, to put pressure on Israel to allow more relief into Gaza via land crossings.

British defense secretary Grant Shapps on Tuesday said Israel should "provide port access and open more land crossings in order to increase incoming aid deliveries to Gaza."

Israeli attacks persist in Gaza after UN Security Council resolution demands immediate ceasefire

The Israeli military launched attacks in northern and southern Gaza on Tuesday, despite a UN Security Council calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Palestinian enclave.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said "troops are operating in the area of Al Amal in Khan Yunis; the IDF and ISA are continuing to conduct precise operational activity in the Shifa Hospital."

Israel's Air Force claimed targets on 60 sites across the Gaza Strip over the past day. CNN cannot independently verify the IDF's statements.

People inspect damage to a building that was struck during Israeli bombardment the previous night in Rafah, on March 26.

Foreign Minister Israel Katz insisted that Israel "will not cease fire" after the UN Security Council on Monday passed a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire for the remaining weeks of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, the immediate and unconditional release of hostages and "the urgent need to expand the flow" of aid into Gaza.

Katz added that Israel "will destroy Hamas and continue to fight until the last of the hostages returns home," in a statement on X.

Human rights warnings: Israel's military campaign in Gaza since the Hamas-led October 7 attacks has destroyed neighborhoods , wiped out families, and exposed the population of more than 2.2 million people to the risk of famine .

Earlier this month, Oxfam and Human Rights Watch warned that Israeli authorities have carried out "indiscriminate and disproportionate attacks" in Gaza, "imposed collective punishment on the civilian population" and "used starvation of civilians as a weapon of war."

Low point reached in rift between Biden and Netanyahu

From CNN's Kevin Liptak and MJ Lee

Benjamin Netanyahu speaks during a conference in Jerusalem on March 17.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to scrap a planned delegation to Washington — a trip President Joe Biden  personally requested a week ago — amounts to a low point in the  ever-deepening rift between the two men.

Netanyahu did not communicate directly with Biden over the decision, a US official said, and the president has no plans to phone the prime minister to discuss the matter.

The White House viewed the cancelation as an overreaction and the move has perplexed US officials.

The talks in Washington were set to occur at a crucial moment, not only for the trajectory of the conflict but for gauging Washington’s influence on its ally.

US officials had planned to offer the Israeli delegation alternative options for going after  Hamas in the southern Gaza city of Rafah,  hoping to forestall what the US believes would amount to a humanitarian catastrophe  if Israel launched a full-scale ground invasion.

Netanyahu remains determined to push ahead with a ground offensive in Rafah, even without US support.

Israel's push for more US weaponry comes at a delicate moment

From CNN's Natasha Bertrand and Alex Marquardt

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant speak during a press conference in Tel Aviv, Israel on October 13, 2023.

When Israeli defense minister Yoav Gallant meets with US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Tuesday, Gallant is expected to ask for more US weaponry and equipment to support Israel’s war in Gaza, US officials said.

It is an extremely delicate request because US weapons sales to Israel are under intense scrutiny by lawmakers and critics of President Joe Biden’s ongoing support for Israel.

“The secretary still believes fundamentally in Israel’s inherent right to defend themselves and that we will continue to support them in that regard,” Pentagon press secretary Patrick Ryder said on Monday. “That support is ironclad.”

It also comes as the US and Israel's relationship hit a new low point after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu scrapped a delegation's Washington visit with US officials to discuss Israel’s military plans for southern Gaza.

According to a senior administration official, Gallant will be told that the various cases of weapons sales are being worked on. “There is scrutiny, but no policy decision to deny” the provision of additional weapons to Israel, the official told CNN.

Some background: The Biden administration has been debating whether and how to condition certain forms of military assistance to Israel. Despite the heightened tensions, the growing weapons sales from the US remain top of mind for Israeli defense officials, who have been pushing their US counterparts for faster approval and progress on the weapons transfers.

UN vote deepens US-Israel tensions. Here's what you need to know

From CNN staff

Tensions between the US and Israel were further exposed on Monday when Washington stood aside and allowed the UN Security Council to pass a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

The US decision to abstain from the vote prompted Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to cancel a scheduled trip to the US by two of his top advisers, two Israeli officials said.

US and Israeli officials were expected to discuss alternatives to a planned Israeli military ground offensive in Rafah , southern Gaza.

“We’re very disappointed that they will not be coming to Washington, DC, to allow us to have a fulsome conversation with them about viable alternatives to going in on the ground in Rafah,” US National Security spokesman John Kirby said.

Despite US pressure, Netanyahu is determined to launch a ground offensive into the Gazan city, where about 1.4 million people are sheltering in dire conditions.

Here are the latest developments in the conflict:

  • Hostage and ceasefire deal: Israel has agreed to a US proposal on a deal that would release around 700 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for 40 hostages, according to CNN analyst Barak Ravid and CNN affiliate Channel 11 (Kan News). Hamas pushed back on the reports and said some issues remain. US officials remain in Doha to continue discussions over a ceasefire deal, according to a source .
  • Al-Shifa raid: Israel's military said it killed 180 people in its raid on Al-Shifa Hospital, which is in its second week. An Israeli general vowed to stay until "the last terrorist is in our hands." Witnesses say hundreds of civilians are trapped inside. An eyewitness told CNN they saw hundreds of Hamas and Islamic Jihad members inside the hospital on the eve of the raid.
  • Aid obstructions: UNICEF spokesperson James Elder has expressed frustration about getting aid to those who "desperately" need it in the Gaza Strip due to the complicated security process.
  • Palestinian recognition: Israel has criticized a plan devised by the leaders of Ireland, Spain, Malta and Slovenia to work towards the recognition of Palestinian statehood , questioning the appropriateness of such a move in the wake of the October 7 attacks.

China welcomes UN Security Council resolution calling for immediate ceasefire, while criticizing US

From CNN's Simone McCarthy and Alex Stambaugh

Ambassador Zhang Jun of China speaks to the press at a stakeout after the Security Council meeting in New York on March 25.

China welcomed the UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire between Gaza and Israel that was approved on Monday, hailing it as "unequivocal and correct in its direction" in comparison to a resolution put forward by the US last week that did not pass.

"The current draft is unequivocal and correct in its direction, demanding an immediate ceasefire, while the previous one has been evasive and ambiguous," China's ambassador to the UN Zhang Jun said. "The differences between the two drafts boil down to nothing but whether there should be an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and whether the collective punishment of the people in Gaza should be allowed to continue."

Zhang also highlighted the "unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe" in Gaza, saying "this resolution, if fully and effectively implemented, could still bring long-awaited hope."

China also urged an end to civilian harm and called for humanitarian supplies to be able to enter Gaza "in sufficient quantities" to reach people in need. It hailed the work of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and urged all parties to fully restore funding, as well as welcomed efforts of Egypt, Qatar and the US "to promote the release of the hostages."

Last week, the US put forward a resolution calling for “an immediate and sustained ceasefire … in connection with the release of all remaining hostages,” which failed after China and Russia vetoed it. It came after the US vetoed prior UNSC resolutions citing concerns they would jeopardize sensitive negotiations.

UNICEF spokesperson says obstructions slow "lifesaving aid" to Gaza

From CNN's Jomana Karadsheh and Mohammed Tawfeeq

UNICEF spokesperson James Elder has expressed frustration about getting aid to those who "desperately" need it in the Gaza Strip due to the complicated security process.

There have been "a lot of arguments and discussions in the media and on social media about the obstructions to getting lifesaving aid to people in desperate need here in the Gaza Strip," Elder said in a video he filmed from the enclave and posted to Instagram on Monday.

"Well, I am on one such mission, trying to head north with vaccines, with malnutrition supplies for severely malnourished babies, with obstetric kits for pregnant women," he said.

He said UNICEF staff "waited at checkpoints for hours. We've been given apparently the green light. We've gone forward. We've been told to come back."

"This is the reality, day in and day out, as we try, often in vain, to get aid to those who desperately, desperately need it," Elder said.

Some background: Humanitarian workers and government officials overseeing aid distribution in Gaza previously told CNN  a clear pattern has emerged of Israeli obstruction . They say the Israeli agency that controls access to Gaza has imposed arbitrary and contradictory criteria.

Eyewitness says Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants were at Al-Shifa Hospital before Israeli raid

From CNN's Abeer Salman and Jeremy Diamond

Smoke rises during an Israeli raid at Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza and the area around it on March 21.

On the eve of the Israeli military raid last Monday on Al-Shifa Hospital, an eyewitness spotted hundreds of Hamas and Islamic Jihad members inside the hospital.

The eyewitness, who spoke to CNN on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals, estimated about 400 to 500 Hamas and Islamic Jihad members and their families arrived at the hospital in mid-March. Some of them appeared to be members of Hamas' political branch, while others were armed militants.

The eyewitness said some of the militants were carrying guns inside the hospital.

CNN has asked the Gaza Health Ministry for comment.

The Israeli military launched a major operation at Al-Shifa last Monday, alleging that Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants had embedded themselves within the hospital.

As the military operation enters its second week, the Israeli military says it has detained “approximately 500” Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants in and around the hospital and killed about 170 militants.

Thousands of civilians were also sheltering inside the medical complex at the time of the raid and eyewitnesses said medical personnel and other civilians were also detained by Israeli troops.

Hundreds of those sheltering were stranded inside the hospital for days — with little food or water — and warned by the Israeli military that they would be shot if they exited the hospital without first receiving instructions to evacuate.

Moscow courts UAE to bump up inbound tourism

The majority of Moscow's tourism is from internal visitors but it is hoping the UAE and wider Gulf can change that

  • Moscow targetting UAE tourism
  • International visitors 10% of total
  • Gulf tourists spend more

Moscow aims to double the number of annual visitors from the UAE this year, to expand its international tourist base amid headwinds such as the war with Ukraine.

Bulat Nurmukhanov, head of the International Cooperation Division at Moscow City Tourism Committee (MCTC), told AGBI that while the Russian capital’s domestic tourism has broadly recovered since the pandemic, international tourism has yet to do so.

Moscow received 24.3 million visitors in 2023, he said, of which 2.3 million were international and the rest were from elsewhere in Russia. In 2019, Moscow recorded 25 million visitors, of which four million were from overseas.

  • In Dubai, it looks like the Russians are staying
  • Moscow still a key destination for Middle East tourists
  • UAE-Russia trade grows as Putin arrives in Gulf

“Despite the challenges Moscow faces today, it has almost recovered its pre-Covid visitor flow of 2019 – our best year for the industry, helped by the effect of hosting the Fifa World Cup in 2018,” Nurmukhanov said.

“But most of these are domestic tourists. We hope that by working with new markets such as the UAE, we can restructure the international tourism base and attract more visitors from the Emirates and wider GCC.”

Moscow has yet to calculate the number of visitors from the UAE last year, but it is a small proportion of the overseas total, according to Nurmukhanov. However, it is an important source market because of its higher-than-average spend per visit.

“They’re helping load Moscow’s five-star hotels”, he said. These are not as popular among domestic tourists and other nationalities as three and four-star hotels.

Bulat Nurmukhanov of the Moscow City Tourism Committee hopes working with the UAE can ' restructure the international tourism base'

Last summer, MCTC revealed that tourists from the Middle East accounted for more than 30 percent of Moscow’s total tourist flow from outside the Commonwealth of Independent States in 2022.

“Middle Eastern countries are among the most promising markets for inbound tourism,” the committee noted.

In the UAE, the number of Russian tourists and investors leapt in the year after Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, as Russian businesses sought a safe haven free of sanctions imposed on them by the West.

Bilateral trade between the two countries has also risen sharply , by 63 percent between January and September 2023 to $9 billion, according to Russia’s government.

Nurmukhanov said: “We’re already receiving a decent amount of tourists from the UAE and want to make sure that now, we adapt our infrastructure and design new hospitality products, entertainment and offerings that will be in their interest.”

The strategy includes enhancing relationships between Moscow and UAE hotels, travel agents and tour operators; improving restaurants’ halal offerings; translating menus and other literature to Arabic, and promoting popular activities such as bear hunting, helicopter trips and horse riding.

Some Moscow hotels even help GCC tourists to purchase warm clothing for their trip, Nurmukhanov said. Gulf visitors can obtain visas on arrival in Russia, and in November a rapid e-visa service was extended to other countries.

This is the story the Detroit Red Wings want to write: 'We belong in the playoffs'

hunting trip 24

Remember what it is like when the Detroit Red Wings make the playoffs?

It was a tradition for a quarter of a century, a yearly given come April on par with taxes being due. Then the franchise sank into a rebuild, and missing the playoffs in 2017 turned into a seven-year event. Now it looks like, at last, the Wings might really make it past the regular season . They enter the final three weeks with a berth within their grasp — much more so than in previous years, when they were still in it mathematically, but not realistically.

"I think it feels special, but it also feels real," Moritz Seider said. "We earned it to be in this position. We just have to put nerves or excitement by the side and grind. Every game is a playoff game for us and hopefully we can build momentum and be ready for something we’ve all been waiting for. It’s a lot more fun playing intense games now and hopefully be part of a cool experience here."

ROAD WARRIORS? With Dylan Larkin back, Red Wings ready to 'eat any point' on 5-game trip

The Wings (36-29-6) began a five-game road trip Saturday with a 1-0 loss to the Nashville Predators, but it was a performance that more times than not will lead to banking points; the tight result against a red-hot Western Conference foe should build confidence on a trip where success is crucial to bringing playoff hockey to Detroit.

The only homegrown — that is, drafted and developed by Detroit — Red Wing on the team that made the postseason in 2016 is Dylan Larkin. Back then, he was a rookie, and the Wings were playing at Joe Louis Arena; now he's a nine-year veteran with the captain's "C" on his sweater and the Wings are still waiting for their first playoff game at Little Caesars Arena. When he returned from an eight-game absence, during which the Wings went 2-6, Larkin spoke about how hard it was to watch his team squander the leeway built up during January and February, which had the Wings sitting in the East's first wild-card berth.

"It was extremely challenging, but I think we’re all in this together," he said. "Every season is long and things happen and whatnot. We have a special group and we showed it. I never question our care, or how much guys care for each other and the team in that room, and I knew we would come out of this and turn it around.

"Our whole goal all year has been trying to write a story as a group and play for each other. I’m really proud of the way this group has done that all season long. If you asked any guy in that room if we’d be in this position, everyone would take it. It just validates that feeling, that we belong in the playoffs."

Belong in the playoffs. That's a phrase that wasn't even whispered just four years ago, when the Wings were the worst team in the NHL. Steve Yzerman should be recognized as the league's top exec at some point for how he has transformed the franchise in just five years, despite never drafting higher than fourth (and that was just once, in 2020 after the Wings finished with the league's worst record) or landing a marquee free agent from a market that rarely sees top talent available.

There was no bigger endorsement that this team does "belong in the playoffs" than Yzerman's decision at the March 8 trade deadline to not make any additions. That was a referendum on the present, and the future — this team can advance, and it shouldn't cost assets such as draft picks or prospects.

TURNING IT AROUND: Red Wings hope 'kick in the' (ahem) rear will finally lead to better starts

"We love to see support from Steve, we love everything he is going," David Perron said, "but after it’s all said and done, we focus on what we can do."

It was a bad, baffling, look when the Wings ran up four straight losses after the deadline, including two to the draft lottery-bound Arizona Coyotes. Then there was the first period against the also-lottery-bound Columbus Blue Jackets on March 19, which was such an aberration coach Derek Lalonde publicly wondered if the team had quit.

Those kind of bumps can't happen again, not with just 11 games left (and seven of those on the road). If they want to write themselves into the playoffs, the Wings need to play energetic, defense-first hockey. Losses happen, but going without at least giving an effort — which was lacking during that seven-game skid — won't get the Wings the ending they crave.

Larkin referred to this time of year as "an emotional roller coaster," because of the day-to-day tumult — the standings are tight, as the New York Islanders and Washington Capitals give close chase in the wild-card race, and a loss might mean a day spent outside the playoff picture.

"We’re at the time of the year where you’re playing every other day," Larkin said. "It’s hard. Going through adversity, we’ll see what it does for us, but I don’t think the way we’ve come out of it it’s a bad thing."

It's growth for the Wings to be so close to securing a playoff spot. Now they just have to write an ending that has them introducing LCA to playoff hockey.

A Jewish lawmaker from Arizona took fellow officials to Israel. What did they learn?

hunting trip 24

Religious faith and personal feelings about the ongoing conflict in Israel and Gaza motivated Arizona Rep. Alma Hernandez to take a group of fellow lawmakers to the region earlier this month.

“It was important for people to see this, to bear witness to what’s actually going on,” she told The Arizona Republic following the trip.

Hernandez, a Democrat, converted to Judaism in 2015 after finding out her maternal grandmother was Jewish. Her personalized license plate states “Zionist,” a nod to her deep commitment to the state of Israel.

The three-term legislator has faced antisemitism previously, but said she has experienced more problems since the deadly Oct. 7 raid by Hamas fighters into Israel. She said she's been worried about her safety at home since pro-Palestinian organizers targeted her with flyers listing her home address.

A New York City-based nonprofit group she’s worked with before, itrek, paid for the flight, lodging, transportation and security for the Arizona contingent.

Itrek’s stated mission is “to educate a generation of leaders about Israel’s values and global contributions to the world,” according to its IRS 990 forms. Records show itrek collects a few million dollars each year that helps fund trips to Israel, typically for college students. But the records don’t show who donated, and itrek didn’t return phone messages for this article.

The group of 17 Democratic and Republican Arizona House members spent March 2-5 in Israel meeting government officials and touring sites, including destroyed kibbutzes and the Nova Music Festival Memorial Site where Hamas slaughtered hundreds of civilians. They talked with families of hostages and the mother of a slain Israeli soldier, in addition to taking a tour of Jerusalem. An armed guard accompanied them everywhere they went.

The trip mainly focused on the experience of Israelis. Participants got close enough to the war zone to hear automatic gunfire, but could not enter Gaza for safety reasons. The trip did not include a visit to prisons that are holding thousands of Palestinians in what the Israel's Public Defender's Office recently called "crowded conditions" in "uninhabitable" spaces.

The group did meet with a Palestinian journalist who gave them a glimpse of his side of the conflict. Hernandez said she's honoring his wish not to reveal his name.

Hernandez admitted to some of the Israelis she met that she felt “a lot of anger and frustration, mainly because of what I’m going through.” Hearing the Palestinian perspective was “really important to me,” she said.

He told the group he was “taught to hate,” and that “Jews stole our land," she said. "He even said his efforts have always been around peace, because he doesn't want his children to be taught what he was taught.”

Participants felt emotional, intellectual impact from trip

Rep. Nancy Gutierrez of Tucson, one of the seven Democrats on the itrek tour, said hope for peace was evident to “everyone we talked to.” She plans to write about her experience in Israel, she added.

Another Democrat, Rep. Keith Seaman of Casa Grande, said the main reason he went was to “see the Holy Land” and Jerusalem. He was also interested in a talk they heard about Israel’s innovations in desalination, agriculture and renewable energy, adding “that was important, too.”

When asked if he thought Israel’s response to the Oct. 7 attack was justified, Seaman said: “I need to figure that out myself.”

None of the Democrats who went were among the Arizona legislators who signed a letter accusing Israel of "crimes" in the aftermath of the attack.

House Speaker Ben Toma was among the 10 Republicans on the trip. He was struck by the enormous impact the Oct. 7 attack had on “the average Israeli.”

“Whether Israeli-Arabs or Jewish, it was very traumatizing to them,” Toma said. “This is the worst thing that’s happened to them since the Holocaust.”

Rep. Justin Wilmeth, a Phoenix Republican, said he was “on the brink of tears” listening to the mother of a 21-year-old soldier killed in the war, who told the group she doesn’t “hate” the people who killed him. He brought home a paper cup with remnants of the Turkish coffee they drank in memory of the solider, who loved the grainy, strong drink.

As a supporter of Israel who’s interested in foreign affairs, Wilmeth believes he learned much on the trip that, as an elected official, he can better relate the Israeli mindset to others.

“They have to live in a world where their coffee shop might have a bomb in it one day,” he said.
