Interpol Set Live Music Return With Spring 2022 North American, European Tour

By Larisha Paul

Larisha Paul

With new music on the horizon, Interpol have scheduled their return to the road for the first time since November 2019. This spring, the band will embark on a 27-date tour spanning North America and Europe.

Interpol will be joined by openers Tycho and Matthew Dear in the U.S. and Dry Cleaning will serve as the opening act for Mexico City in May.

The tour will begin on April 25 at Dallas, Texas’ the Factory in Deep Ellum and conclude with a festival appearance at Landgraaf, Netherlands’ Pinkpop Festival on June 19.

Interpol wrapped the tour for their 2018 album Marauder at a sold-out Peru stadium in November 2019 and set their sights on a creative break that received a lengthy extension over a period of lockdowns. In the meantime, the band worked on their upcoming, as-yet-untitled record. Now, they’re ready to get back on stage.

In November, Daniel Kessler told Rolling Stone : “I feel like there’s going to be a rare moment between the audience and the performer, where each one of you and us onstage are all coming at it from the same place. There’s going to be a deep mutual appreciation. I just can’t wait.”

Interpol bores, Spoon sparkles at uneven N.J. tour kickoff | review

Interpol Concert: Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, NJ.

Interpol performed on 8/25/2022 at the Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, NJ.

  • Bobby Olivier | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

Less than a week ago, Interpol celebrated the 20th anniversary of the band’s seminal debut album, “Turn On the Bright Lights,” a stark and biting flag-bearer of early ‘00s post-punk revival.

Named Pitchfork’s album of the year in 2002, the LP was instrumental in sustaining visibility for the burgeoning scene, largely based in New York, where bands like The Strokes and Yeah Yeah Yeahs were also just coming on to the national stage. As famously portrayed in Lizzy Goodman’s “Meet Me in the Bathroom” oral history book, the Manhattan community was vibrant and impassioned, with Interpol honing its sound — drawing heavy influence from melancholic forefathers Joy Division and The Smiths — at the legendary Lower East Side haunt the Luna Lounge, jamming beside The Strokes, The National, TV on the Radio and many others. The Killers wouldn’t blast the genre skyward for another two years — and might have never soared without the intrigue surrounding Interpol and its cohort.

Two decades later, the trio of Paul Banks, Daniel Kessler and Samuel Fogarino has carved a successful career around their siren-like sound, earning generally warm critical receptions across seven LPs and filling venues with millennials clinging to the enduring tracks.

Interpol Concert: Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, NJ.

Enter the band’s latest 20-date tour, which kicked off Thursday night at a crowded Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park. The roadshow, titled the “Lights, Camera, Factions tour” is technically a co-headlining bill with Austin indie-rock stalwarts Spoon , though Interpol closed the show and it was clear Thursday most of the audience was there for them.

The band, which travels as a five-piece with touring bassist and keyboardist, delivered a visually striking 70-minute set, heavily backlit with dramatic strobes, torrents of fog and three low-lying disco balls to largely obscure the band, casting them in silhouette for much of the performance.

This was fine enough, as there wasn’t much to see. The ding against Interpol is that while they’ve clearly mastered (if not singularly defined) the modern post-punk aesthetic, their catalog lacks dimension — a great deal of their songbook, including July’s serviceable new record “The Other Side of Make-Believe,” does indeed sound like a facsimile of “Bright Lights.” One card, played over and over.

Such stasis might’ve been less overt Thursday if the band had better engaged the crowd of about 3,000, or offered a more energetic stage show. But that’s just not their style: They wear their tailored black suits, they stand there and play their songs; blank stoicism masquerading as intensity.

Interpol Concert: Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, NJ.

Sonically, it was a fine set: Banks’ slicing vocal tone perked up the audience for fan favorites “Obstacle 1,” “Evil” and “Rest My Chemistry.” Of the new tunes, the best was “Fables,” a more melodic offering with its humble pleading: “It’s time we made something stable / ‘’Cause we’re in the sights of perfect danger.”

Leagues more exhilarating was the preceding set from Spoon, a 70-minute foil of raw emotion and bounding humanity, led by steady frontman Britt Daniel. The Texas-bred outfit landed around the same time as Interpol, scoring huge critical praise for its albums “Girls Can Tell” (2001) and “Kill The Moonlight” (2002), which blended elements of indie-rock, classic rock and new wave. The latter album landed a minor hit in “The Way We Get By,” which was featured prominently in “The O.C.” on TV and in “Stranger Than Fiction” in film. Since then, the group has remained wholly consistent — and on my short list of the most underrated American bands of the last 25 years.

Spoon Concert: Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, NJ.

Spoon performed on 8/25/2022 at the Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, NJ. Nick Scalera | For NJ Advance Media

Their latest album, February’s blues-heavy “Lucifer on the Sofa” is easily one of the year’s best rock records, and was rolled out Thursday with pumping renditions of the crunchy groove single “The Hardest Cut,” the hypnotic “My Babe,” and thrilling “Wild,” co-written by New Jersey superproducer Jack Antonoff in a rare indie-rock credit.

The set’s scene stealer, however, was touring keyboardist Alex Fischel, who morphed his side stage positioning into a magnetic spotlight, absolutely hammering his keys on “Inside Out” and playing spark plug as a second guitarist on “I Summon You.” Few emotions translate better onstage than hunger for and joy derived from a memorable performance and the early crowd was hooked as the sun set over the Jersey Shore town.

Spoon Concert: Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, NJ.

Spoon performed on 8/25/2022 at the Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, NJ.

Daniel, meanwhile, was strong and propulsive at center stage, his voice forever reminding of John Lennon; Thursday’s cover of Lennon’s “Isolation” might’ve been a little on the nose.

Late in the set, Daniel’s rig experienced some technical difficulties, with several stagehands fiddling with his pedals and amp. But even as the guitar cut in and out, the sweat-soaked frontman soldiered on, never mentioning it or delaying the show, a consummate pro.

In a four-star review of their new LP , NME  wrote: “Far from a total reinvention, but all adds up to a confident, rewarding and subtly adventurous new chapter for Interpol – or, as [frontman Paul] Banks sings himself on the peak of ‘Toni’, “ Still in shape, my methods refined “.
