Playa Avellanas, Costa Rica Travel Guide: Things to Do + Tips

Searching for the ideal destination for your Costa Rica beach and surf vacation? Look no further than Playa Avellanas.

Year after year, my fiancé and I keep returning to Playa Avellanas for the gorgeous beaches , epic surf spots , incredible sunsets (every night!), pura vida lifestyle , warm local people , and wonderful restaurants … 

Oh, and the bountiful wildlife, from sea turtles to iguanas to motmot birds. What wake-up call is better than a howler monkey’s?  

And even though Playa Avellanas is rustic and slightly off the beaten path (think: dirt roads and no rules), there’s no shortage of luxurious beachfront resorts, boutique hotels, and rental homes here. 

I love this sweet little spot along the “Gold Coast” of Guanacaste, Costa Rica. And with this ultimate Playa Avellanas travel guide at your fingertips, I’m sure you will too!

Best Things to Do in Playa Avellanas

Even though this is a small town, there are plenty of things to do in Playa Avellanas! Let’s dive into them.

1. Go Surfing

This is a surf town, so of course the top thing to do in Playa Avellanas is surf!

There are multiple different breaks to explore along the main beach, including:

• Purruja/El Parque: This beach break, in front of La Purruja, is a good spot for all levels, breaking right and left. High tide is best. 
• Little Hawaii: This is the best-known spot for experienced surfers, where the offshore waves can reach up to eighteen feet. Good on low tide, watch out for the shallow reef.
• Palo Seco: In front of the big dead tree halfway down the beach (to the north), this beach break offers rights and lefts. 
• El Estero: Though rocky, the river mouth is a good break at low tide. 

If you have a car, there are plenty more surf spots to explore up the Gold Coast, near Tamarindo, and down south in Playa Negra and beyond.

2. Learn to Surf

Want to take some surf lessons? A few surf schools operate in the area, including Avellanas Soul Surf School and Avellanas Surf School .

You can easily book a lesson by walking up to a surf school tent on the sand – or book through your accommodation.

I took a few lessons while I lived in the area, and improved a lot in just a few days!

3. Beach Hop

Plenty of beach time is in order – whether you want to laze on the sand, go for beach walks, or watch the incredible sunsets over a local craft beer. The sunsets here are some of the best in the entire world!

Beyond Avellanas Beach, which is absolutely beautiful , you may want to beach hop to some other nearby beaches…

Playa Mansita and Playa Langosta are both accessible from within Hacienda Pinilla / JW Marriott , while Playa Lagartillo and Playa Negra are a few minutes south.

Further afield, within a (very bumpy) one-hour drive south, there are many more stunning beaches to discover, including Playa Blanca , Playa Frijolar in Marbella (have lunch and local craft beers at Tiki Hut !), and Playa San Juanillo .

Note: At many of these beaches, there’ll be an attendant waiting in the parking lot. You’ll have to pay them somewhere between ₡1,000-2,000 (or $2-4 USD) to watch your car for the day, so bring cash.

4. Go Horseback Riding

One of the most iconic things to do in Playa Avellanas? Going for a sunset horseback riding tour on the beach.

When you arrive, ask the staff at your hotel to help you reserve a horseback riding tour with a local caballero .

5. Practice Yoga, Barre, or Jiu Jitsu

Want to keep up your fitness during your vacation? Check out these fitness classes.

• YOGA: You can practice yoga on the upper deck at Lola’s on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays from 9 to 9:30 AM. Drop-ins are $15. Find details here . In Playa Negra (10 minutes away), you can also practice yoga at Playa Negra Yoga and Playa Negra Beach Yoga . Drop-ins are $20 at both Negra studios. 
• BARRE: Pura Vida Barre studio, located at the La Esquina market in the heart of town and in Hacienda Pinilla, offers classes Monday through Thursday. Drop-ins are $15.
• JIU JITSU: There are different Brazilian jiu-jitsu classes available for young kids, children, and adults between Monday and Saturday at Lola’s. Find details here .

6. Explore the Mangroves

A long wooden boardwalk through the mangroves connects Avellanas Beach to Cabinas Las Olas , offering a peaceful nature walk through a unique ecosystem. 

On low tide, you’ll see thousands of bright orange and purple crabs. At high tide, you may even see a crocodile… but probably not. 

Access the boardwalk at this location , from the beach. It’s very rickety; watch your every step!

7. Go Snorkeling, Diving, or Fishing

Guanacaste’s coast is teeming with sea life, so scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing, spear-fishing, and free-diving are also popular water sports in the area.

Talk to your hotel staff to see what’s available to book when you arrive.

8. Take a Day Trip

There are lots of fun day trips to take from Avellanas. Here are my top picks!

Visit Tamarindo

Tamarindo is extremely touristy and busy, but since it’s just 30 minutes north, it’s an easy and fun day trip.

This popular beach town (which feels like a city when compared to Avellanas) is home to gorgeous beaches, lots of restaurants, cafés, bars, surf shops, boutique shops, and every other modern convenience you could want. 

While you’re here, you can take a surf lesson , get a massage on the beach, beach bar hop, or experience the nightlife. Tamarindo is known for its salsa clubs and Latin music! 

Also, make sure to visit the Night Market on Thursday night and/or the Tamarindo Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings!

Explore Playa Negra

Playa Negra is a rustic beach village just 10 minutes south. Featured in the legendary surf movie Endless Summer II , Negra is considered one of Costa Rica’s top reef breaks.

But beyond the surf, there are some great restaurants and cafes, as well as a beautiful black sand beach and peaceful vibe. It’s a magical place – I absolutely love it. 

You can easily take a day trip here in your rental car or on your rental motorbike.

Visit Rincón de la Vieja Volcano

I highly recommend going on this Adventure Volcano Zipline Horseback River Tubing Combo Tour at the foot of the Rincón de la Vieja Volcano.

I went on this day trip during my first trip to Playa Avellanas with 10 friends and it was so much fun !

This day trip includes a fun ziplining course, horseback riding through the jungle, tubing along the river, soaking in natural hot springs, volcanic mud bathing, lunch, and transportation. A must-do!

See Sea Turtles at Ostional Wildlife Refuge

About 1.5 hours south of Playa Avellanas, near a popular surf town called Nosara , you’ll find Ostional National Wildlife Refuge – a nesting ground for Olive Ridley sea turtles.

There are turtles in the Guanacaste Province year-round, but between late July through late December , turtles arrive in the thousands to lay eggs. They literally cover the entire beach.

The best time to see them is at dusk or dawn (5 AM or 5 PM). Be quiet and don’t disturb the turtles. Absolutely no flash photography!

Visit Marino Las Baulas National Park

You can also see nesting turtles at Marino Las Baulas National Park , about one hour north of Avellanas!

Where to Eat & Drink in Playa Avellanas

Playa Avellanas is a small beach village with a surprising number of places to eat and drink! This is pretty much an exhaustive list – in the order I recommend them.

• SoulShine : An Israeli-inspired café offering healthy eats, smoothies, and coffee, made with local ingredients. I love this place!
• Il Rustico : Delicious Italian food in a rustic yet romantic setting. Order the lasagna and pizza!
• Bitchin Bagels : Staying in a vacation rental? Order some fresh (and super delicious) bagels in advance for Wednesday delivery. 
• Cabinas Las Olas : This surf hotel’s restaurant and bar offers local craft beers, and international and typical Tico food. Order some fresh-catch fish tacos!
• La Purruja : At this casual beachfront bar and restaurant, enjoy some patacones, ceviche, and happy hour drinks!
• La Esquina de Avellanas : This little market in the heart of town offers an organic veggie shop, a couple of boutique shops, and a collection of food stalls offering arepas, gelato, cocktails, and more. 
• SURF HUB Coffee & Gelato : The best gelato in town! 
• Barumi’s : Burgers and fries, along with local craft beers.
• Cactus Restaurant : A cute, family-owned place for local eats.  
• Lola’s Restaurant : The original beach bar and restaurant in the area. The menu offers international classics, plus they have lounge chairs and umbrellas on the sand. They’re famous for their giant pet pig, Lola. 
• Burritos & Bowls : A brand new addition to town, serving giant burritos and loaded chicken and veggie bowls. I haven’t been here yet, so that’s why it’s at the bottom!

P.S. There are more great places to eat nearby in Playa Negra (Los Pargos). In the town of Tamarindo, which is a 30-minute drive north, you’ll find a much larger variety.

Where to Stay in Playa Avellanas, Costa Rica

Here are my top recommendations for where to stay in Playa Avellana, in every price range:

• JW Marriott Guanacaste Resort & Spa ($$$$): Nestled into Guanacaste’s dry tropical forest, on the secluded white sand beach of Playa Mansita, this luxury resort offers every amenity you can imagine.  Click here to book it.
• Hacienda Pinilla ($$$): This luxe beachfront community is home to many vacation rental homes and villas, as well as the JW Marriott. On-site, you’ll have access to their tennis/pickleball courts, 18-hole world-class golf course, fitness center, biking trails, beach club, horse stables, and so much more. I highly recommend booking a beach villa here and staying for a week. I have, and it was amazing! Click here to find a vacation rental.
• SoulShine Hotel & Restaurant ($$): This small, family-friendly hotel features cute individual bungalows, a pool area, and an Israeli-inspired café. This hotel is a 5-minute drive from Playa Avellanas. Click here to book it.
• Cabinas Las Olas ($): These basic surf cottages have everything you need for a comfortable, budget-friendly stay – yes, even AC. There’s a surf shop and restaurant, plus beach access via a boardwalk through the mangroves. Click here to book it.

How to Get to Playa Avellanas

Getting to Playa Avellanas is easy. You can fly directly into Liberia International Airport from hubs like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, Houston, Denver, Miami, and New York, just to name a few… 

From Liberia Airport, it’s a 1.5-hour drive to Playa Avellanas.

If necessary, you can also fly in/out of the Tico capital, San José. But it’s a 4-hour drive, at least, to Playa Avellanas.

Once you land at either airport, rental cars or private shuttles are the best way to get here!

I recommend renting a car for your entire trip. Arrange to pick up/drop off your rental at the airport in Liberia or San José. Click here to find the best deals on rental cars.

Don’t want to drive around Costa Rica? Then book a shuttle!

Contact my friend Héctor, owner of local travel agency Tamarindo Explorer, to arrange private shuttles for reasonable prices. I’ve been on countless trips and airport transfers with him.

From Liberia Airport to Avellanas, expect to pay about $100 USD for a private shuttle. From San José Airport to Avellanas, you’re looking at roughly $300-350. Also, remember, always try to barter on private shuttle prices!

It’s unlikely that you’ll find a shared shuttle to Playa Avellanas. If you’re on a budget, take a shared shuttle to Tamarindo and hop in a pirate taxi to Avellanas.

From Tamarindo or Playa Grande, you can take an unofficial taxi (pirate taxi) one-way to Avellanas for roughly $35-40 USD, whereas an official shuttle van journey will cost around $55-60 USD.

How to Get Around Playa Avellanas

The best way to get around Playa Avellanas is with a rental car . 

An air-conditioned 4X4 SUV is the most comfortable, convenient way to navigate the bumpy dirt roads, heat, long distances between restaurants/things to do, and potential rain in/around Playa Avellanas!

HOT TIP: If you only want a rental car for part of your trip (i.e. for a couple of day trips), you can rent a car at the JW Marriott in Hacienda Pinilla. I have rented from Enterprise/Alamo/National there without issues. Click here to book your rental car.

Motorbike & Golf Cart Rentals

Otherwise, you should rent a motorbike or a golf cart.

You can rent a motorbike and helmet from my good friend Gianni at Salty Rentals , located at Café Corazón in Playa Negra, for about $40 USD/day.

Otherwise, there’s a rental shop within Hacienda Pinilla, called Paradise Cart Rentals , where you can rent golf carts (starting at $65/USD/day; discounts apply for multi-day rentals), ATVs, and motorbikes; they’ll also deliver your vehicle to you for free. I’ve never rented here before.

NOTE: Do NOT rent a motorbike unless you have SIGNIFICANT experience. I have seen many people ruin their surf vacations by crashing. Also, always wear a helmet. And don’t even think about visiting Costa Rica without travel insurance !

Planning to shuttle in and out? Exploring Playa Avellanas on foot isn’t a great option – unless you’re staying at a beachfront hotel or resort (i.e. the J.W. Marriott or Cabinas Las Olas ) within walking distance of restaurants.

But remember, no matter what, walking around on dusty roads in the strong Tico sun is no fun!

Must-Know Avellanas Travel Tips

• If you rent a car , keep in mind there are NO gas stations nearby. The closest one is in Villareal (25 minutes away).
• There is an ATM at the JW Marriott . Otherwise, the closest ATM is in Tamarindo (30 minutes away). Many places are cash only. Almost everything is priced in USD in this area, so if you’re American, you can bring cash from home.
• Purchase travel insurance before you come here. This is an intrepid destination where a lot can go wrong. This opinion comes from lots of first-hand experience! This is the travel insurance I have and recommend.

When is the Best Time to Visit Playa Avellanas?

• High season: Everyone will tell you that the high season, December through April, is the best time to visit because it’s hot, sunny, and dry most days . But that also means that it’s more expensive and crowded. Plus, in April, the area is dry and brown – the opposite of the lush, green rainforest you’d probably expect! The surf is great during this time , thanks to the sunny weather and strong “Papagayo” offshore winds (present December through February) that push swell in from the northwest.
• Early rainy season: My favorite time to visit is between May through August. This is the early part of the rainy season, when the crowds thin, the prices drop, and Guanacaste’s dry tropical rainforest bursts to life. Expect consistent swell and big waves during this time.
• Late rainy season: Avoid September and October. It rains way too much during this time, and many businesses close. The rain starts to let up in November.

What’s the best time to Monteverde?

A summary of several thousand comments from visitors on the Costa Rica Travel Group when asked what they should have brought on vacation.

Obviously what you should bring on a trip to Costa Rica depends on what you’re going to do. Lounging at the poolside bar at an all inclusive resort suitcases will be packed differently than a trekking through the jungle from an ecolodge backpack.

Skim the list below to see if there’s anything that fits your travel style. The most common answer was “half as many clothes and twice as much money.”

“Things I Wish I’d Packed”

• No fee cards – many travelers realized they were loosing a lot of money because they didn’t get a credit and debit card with lower/no fees before leaving home. 
• Portable charger (aka powerbank or powerpak) – small rechargeable battery packs that can be pugged into the wall then used to charge phones, cameras, tablets etc. on the go. Around $20 will buy enough capacity to charge several phones. Of course you also need appropriate cords.
• Dramamine (aka gravol, bonine) – many of the roads in Costa Rica are roller coasters and even people who aren’t susceptible to motion sickness commented they wished they had something to prevent nausea.
• Sunscreen – it’s expensive here, selections of reef safe or hypo-alergenic are limited, and you’ll use a lot.
• Duct Tape – I always have a few yards of duct tape wrapped around my stainless steel water bottle and have used it to splint broken fingers, seal punctures in bike tires, radiator hoses and the bottom of my foot, you can repair a broken pack strap, get the cat hair off your wife’s black dress, etc. etc. etc. 

• Cash – dollars or colones. Although several people mentioned they spent more than they expected most don’t realize that one of the worst places to exchange money is at a bank before you leave home. It’s safer and more economical to get a no fee ATM card instead of packing more cash.

• Binoculars – First things first, if you’re going to bother buying and carrying them then you want 8×42 or 10×42, roof prism, nitrogen filled, waterproof, and multi coated for birds and wildlife in Costa Rica. If you know what that means then you know we are right and if you don’t know what that means you just have to trust our 50 years of experience. The gold standard are Zeiss and Swarovski starting at around two grand. We use the Nikon Monarch which I would say is very reasonably priced at ~$260. The Celestron for $80 is a fantastic bargain. Barely less bright than the Nikon and a third the price.
• Special Shoes – multiple mentions of all types – water shoes, waterproof shoes, hiking sandals, boots, Keen’s etc. Ironically another item that was mentioned frequently were “blister band-aids” because so many people buy new Keens or hiking shoes but don’t break them in.  
• Dry bag and/or waterproof phone case – there’s a lot of water in Costa Rica even when it’s not raining – beaches, waterfalls, rivers, estuaries, hot springs and swimming pools.
• Wash cloth – face cloths or wash cloths aren’t a typical Costa Rican bathroom accessory.
• Drugs – Building a good first aid kit is an investment of effort that will pay off for a lifetime. I’ve been carrying the same one for fifty years with inventory updates and refresh once a year. If you don’t have time for a whole kit a few specifics that were mentioned a lot are – anti-allergy medication because the allergens and seasons are totally different from home, afterBite, blister bandaids, pepto, tums, lomotil, imodium, and pain relievers.
• Raincoat & Umbrella – another item that appeared frequently on both the “wish I packed” and “don’t bother” lists.
• Powerbars – expensive and the selection probably won’t include your favorites.

Remember, these are just the most common things people forgot or didn’t think of… you’ll also want the things that everyone brings on the main packing list.

Honorable Mentions

A couple of items didn’t get a lot of comments but could make a big difference.  

An old phone.  If you’re planning on getting a local SIM card it comes with a local number and your regular number is not available for wi-fi calling or messaging etc.  You can put the local SIM into a spare phone and have the best of both worlds.

Kid’s life vests and helmets if you’re planning adventure activities like zip-lines, rappelling, rafting, climbing, horseback riding etc.  The quality and fit of the provided equipment may leave a lot to be desired especially in children’s sizes.

Just Buy it When You Arrive?

Many travelers suggested that none of the things on the list need to be packed – “Costa Rica is civilized, you can buy everything here.” That’s true but do you really want to try to find an open famacia to get imodium for a bout of diarrhea at 3 am? Even if it’s not an emergency who wants to spend their vacation going from store to store because you don’t know who carries what.

Just buying it in Costa Rica is sometimes expensive and not always convenient and you might have to drive 10 hours round trip to find electronics or camera batteries in San José.

Some things are easier to get after you arrive. You can buy the popular travel antibiotic Cipro at any pharmacy without a doctor visit or prescription. It’s also probably not worth packing a case of wine in your checked bag even though prices are probably better where you come from.

Leave it Home, Didn’t Need it

Just like the “things I wish I’d packed” list the usefulness of the “don’t bother bringing it” list will depend a lot on your travel style but take a look and see if you can lighten your load.

• clothes – there’s no dress codes, everything is casual and many travelers reported they packed way too many clothes. You can do laundry or have it done. Specifically many said their rain jacket was useless or unused.
• makeup – most of it just melts right off your face. Maybe a little waterproof mascara and lip gloss but don’t bother bringing the whole makeup bag.
• heels – you pretty much have to be born into it to manage heels on the cracked cratered sidewalks and gutters.
• mosquito repellent – “we were there a whole week and never saw a mosquito”.
• snorkeling gear – while the quality of the gear provided on tours is not great, neither is the snorkelling. If you own your own gear you’ve probably snorkeled in world class destinations like Hawaii, Fiji, the Barrier Reef etc. and Costa Rica will be very disappointing by comparison. It takes up a lot of space and may not get much use – a lot of visitors said leave it home.
• curling iron, flatiron – pretty much anything to try to wrangle hair other than a scrunchie. It’s hopeless.
• jewelry – makes you a target for theft and rings, earrings etc. can be easily lost or snagged on adventure tours.

Take it or Leave it

A few items showed up prominently on both the take it and leave it lists.

The most controversial is insect repellent. It’s amazing how many people end up with Dengue or just a load of bites because they assume there are never any insects, ever, anywhere in the tropics based on “we didn’t get any bites in a whole week”. It’s not hard to be prepared. Better safe than sorry?

Rain gear, coats, ponchos and umbrellas are a source of much discussion as well. Mainly because some people get lucky and experience only dry weather and others get torrential rain and discover that none of the options are that great. We do bring gortex jackets but main for wind and cold at higher elevations because breathable waterproof fabrics simply do not work in the heat and humidity of the rain forest.

Snorkeling gear is another take it or leave it.

The 22 Best Things to Do in Nosara, Costa Rica

A re you ready to soak up the good vibes with all the fun things to do in Nosara, Costa Rica? This small town is most well known as a surfer’s paradise, but everyone will enjoy a visit to this remote beach on the Pacific Coast. 

We’ve visited Nosara many times and every time, we stumble upon new and fun stuff to check out. We created this complete guide to Nosara activities to help you find fun things to do no matter what your budget or adventure vibe is. 

So, let’s get to our list of 22 must-do activities. Because, in Nosara, the good times never take a break! 

1. Go Surfing

The most popular and exhilarating activity in Nosara is undoubtedly surfing. 

The beaches here are not only pristine with golden sands and lush surroundings but also boast consistent waves that create an unbeatable surfing experience. 

For those looking to dip their toes into the world of surfing, Playa Guiones near the shore is the ideal spot. For the more experienced surfers, head to the powerful breaks further out.

Nosara offers surfable conditions year-round, so visitors can always find good waves.

Nosara is also surrounded by other fantastic surfing beaches. We like Playa Pelada for a quieter atmosphere with waves suitable for both beginners and intermediate surfers.

What sets Nosara apart is not just the waves; it’s the entire experience of immersing yourself in the laid-back, surf vibe that permeates the town.

If you’re a more experienced surfer looking to explore the waves independently, Nosara offers a ton of surf shops where you can rent a surfboard for the day.

2. Take a Yoga Class

Another one of the top things to do in this area is to enjoy some yoga. The relaxed vibes of Nosara are perfect for taking a  yoga class .

If you would like to take a yoga class every day, we suggest staying at a hotel with yoga included in the room rate.

Our three favorite yoga hotels are:

• Tierra Magnifica Boutique Hotel

Additionally, you can always skip the class and enjoy your own peaceful yoga session on the beach with the waves crashing in front of you.

I like to do this during sunrise for the ultimate mindset reset before the day begins. 

3. Visit Samara

Samara is a beach town located about 30 minutes south of Nosara. This town is a bit more bustling than Nosara and is popular with families.

It is a great place to visit to experience another side of Guanacaste beach town vibes.

4. Take a Half Day Mountain Tour

This is one of our favorite half day tours in Nosara because it will give you the perfect insight into the culture in this area.

Your day will start with an ATV ride through the Nosara mountains with an experienced guide.

Eventually, your group will arrive in the town of Naranjo Naranjal where you’ll visit a family farm.

At the farm you will get the chance to see fruit trees, coffee plants, and other vegetables. T

hen, you will a farm-to-table lunch with the fresh fruit and vegetables before making your way back to Nosara.

5. Go Beach Hopping

One of our favorite things to do in this area is to just get in our  rental car  and go beach hopping.

Just drive along the coastal roads and you will see plenty of small side roads leading to remote beautiful beaches.

We think the best beaches in this area are; Playa Nosara, Playa Pelada, Playa San Juanillo, Playa Garza, and Playa Azul.

All beaches in Costa Rica have public access by law. Just note, it is best to not leave anything of value in your car especially if it is unattended. 

6. Take a Cooking Class

We love taking a cooking class in Costa Rica.

In my opinion, it is the perfect way to experience the local culture, get to know someone who lives in the area, learn something new, and get to eat delicious food.

This cooking class is led by a local chef. You will get the chance to prepare (and eat) a traditional meal cooked on a wood grill.

7. Visit Playa Ostional

Playa Ostional is a beachfront national park that aims to protect sea turtle nesting.

This area is a nesting ground for Olive Ridley sea turtles.

The mother turtles arrive once a month to lay their eggs here, but the best time to experience this is typically in the autumn. At that time of year you can sometimes see thousands of turtles at one time. 

This beach is only accessible with a certified guide during nesting time.

8. Visit a Craft Brewery

Our two favorite breweries in Nosara are called  Blue Zone Brewery  and  Guiones Brewing Company .

Blue Zone Brewery serves up excellent brews and food such as tacos and quesadillas. Guinoes Brewing Company serves beers and tasty pizza.

Luckily, both breweries are located across the street from one another so you can easily visit them both in one fun filled excursion. 

9. Visit a Day Spa

It’s vacation, you deserve to relax! In our opinion, one of the best ways to do that is with a treatment at the day spa. 

Our favorite day spa in Nosara is Spacio Spa and Massage Studio. They offer a variety of treatments with excellent professional masseuses.

10. Go Waterfall Rapelling

If you are looking for an adrenaline-pumping adventure, waterfall rappelling might be perfect for you. 

This fun half-day trip includes transportation from your Nosara area hotel. You will then enjoy a nice jungle hike before rapping down a 20-meter-high waterfall.

This adventure is done with an experienced guide and all safety equipment is provided.

11. Take a Safari Float in Nosara River

I love this activity because it is the perfect experience for nature lovers. You will get to float down the Nosara River with a guide and hopefully spot various wildlife along the way.

You might see crocodiles, birds, howler monkeys, and iguanas.

12. Go Horse Back Riding on the Beach

Horseback riding along the Nosara beaches is the perfect peaceful way to enjoy the waves crashing and the beautiful landscape.

We suggest doing this activity at sunset for an extra special experience.

13. Visit a Wildlife Sanctuary

If you are looking to see local wildlife, a great way to do that is by visiting one of the two amazing wildlife sanctuaries in the area.

These are  Sibu Wildlife Sanctuary  and  International Animal Rescue .

Both places allow day visitors, but you will need to reserve your spot ahead of time.

Additionally, both places are always looking for long-term volunteers. 

14. Enjoy a Delicious Meal

There are several great restaurants in Nosara. We suggest trying at least one traditional meal. The best restaurants for that are:

• Rosi’s Soda Tica

Another fun experience is to enjoy a meal with a sunset view. The best places for that are: 

• La Luna  (directly on the beach)
• HUACAS Restaurant  (in the hills above Nosara with sweeping views)

15. Take a Booze Cruise

This is actually a booze bus ride to several excellent bars and restaurants for delicious drinks.

This tour is very well organized and one of the best experiences you can have in the area (in our opinion).

The people who run it put in a lot of work to make sure it is an excellent experience. 

You will visit 4 different bars/restaurants on this tour. Drinks are included in the price and transportation is provided.

16. Watch the Sunset

The sun sets year-round between 5:15 and 6pm. The best way to enjoy this is by heading to one of the many beautiful beaches in the area to enjoy the show daily.

It’s a great way to wrap up a fun-filled Costa Rican day!

17. Go Kayaking or Try SUP

This guided tour allows you to choose between a peaceful paddle on kayaks or on SUP boards.

You will float down the river surrounded by dense jungle to the surrounding natural beauty, visit Ostional beach and hopefully see sea turtles, enjoy some fresh fruit, and enjoy a swim in the river.

18. Play Mini Golf

Cafe de Paris  (a delicious French bakery in Nosara) also has an 18-hole mini golf course on their property.

This is a fun activity to enjoy as a family or even as a couple. The course is simple, but good. It is the perfect place to spend an hour or two. 

19. Take a Pilates Class

One of the best things to do in Nosara is to take a pilates class.  Pilates Nosara  offers classes throughout the day for various skill levels.

Their classes are held at Bodhi Tree Resort (which is such a great spot).

20. Enjoy a Bicycle Tour

This three hour bike tour will take you through the lush jungle areas surrounding Nosara.

You’ll discover hidden trails, off-road paths, and beach areas.

It is led by excellent guides who will make sure you are safe, comfortable, and have a great time throughout the tour.

21. Just Relax

Nosara is one of those beach towns that just exudes peaceful vibes. This is one of our favorite places to do nothing.

Spend a day relaxing with a good book by your hotel pool or on the beach. Just remember lots of sunblock!

22. Take a Spanish Class

Spanish is the main language spoken in Costa Rica. However, most people working in tourism speak at least some English.

If you would like to brush up on your Spanish or learn as a beginner, the Nosara Spanish Institute is the perfect place for you!

They offer several different packages from single lesson to 20 hours of lessons, to retreat packages that combine language learning with surfing or yoga.

Nosara Travel Tips

• Book Your Trip to Nosara early. This is a popular area and fills up fast, especially during the dry season.
• Don’t forget to purchase travel insurance. You never know what will happen when visiting a foreign country. Our favorite travel insurance for Costa Rica is Heymondo.  You can get a price quote here . 
• During the rainy season, certain places near Nosara can become difficult to access. A lot of the roads around here have recently been paved for the first time, but there are still some areas with dirt roads and river crossings that can become flooded.
• Nosara is a very relaxed town. There is no need to pack fancy clothes. Things laid back vibes.

How to Get to Nosara

Nosara is a small beach town located on the Nicoya Peninsula. Despite being small, it is one of the most popular places in the country to visit. 

If visiting Nosara, it is easiest to fly into  Liberia International Airport  rather than the  San Jose International Airport .

From Liberia, it will take about 2.5 hours to drive here. From the San José airport, it takes about 5 hours to drive here.

Typically we suggest renting a car to easily get around. We work exclusively with  Adobe Rent-a Car and have a 10% discount plus other perks  to pass on to you. One of those perks is the free use of roof racks. This is great if you plan to bring your own board for surfing. 

However, if you are uncomfortable driving, a private or shared shuttle is also a great option. This just means you will need to figure out day-to-day transportation while in Nosara.

Cocos Island is situated south-west of the Costa Rican mainland. It is a world-class diving destination and is the perfect spot for advanced divers. There are plenty of shark spotting opportunities, with the months from June to November being the best times to go diving at the destination. The island boasts an abundance of hammerhead sharks. Whale sharks and tiger sharks can also be spotted.

Hiking around Rio Celeste

The enchanting Rio Celeste is located in Tenorio Volcano National Park and is a 14km stretch of magical blue waters. It takes approximately an hour to hike from the park’s entrance to the waterfall. The hiking level is moderate, although some sections may prove to be a little challenging for beginner hikers. A hiking experience around Rio Celeste offers superb panoramic views of nature and unforgettable memories.

Costa Rica’s Holy Week Marred by Deadly Water-Related Incidents

Take a hard green plantain ( plátano ), cut it crosswise into rounds, fry them in oil, mash them flat, and fry them in oil again. If this doesn’t sound all that appetizing, you may not realize this is how you make patacones , a common and scrumptious treat in Costa Rica.

As simple as they are, there are things many people don’t know about this ubiquitous dish. There is more to patacones than meets the eye:

1. The name Patacón

It comes from various Colonial Era Spanish and Portuguese silver coins. In an ironic double-back, tostón , a name applied to patacones in some other countries, has been used as slang for a Mexican fifty-cent piece.

2. Plantains belong to the banana family

At first, many people from northern climes mistake them for large bananas. They are native to India and are popular today in the tropical areas of Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America. They have been grown in subtropical Florida, but they do not play well with frost.

3. In Costa Rica, Patacones are usually pressed into disks several inches across

They are served with ground beans or chimichurri (the tomato, onion, and cilantro mix). They are also commonly served as accompaniments to other dishes. Warm, chewy patacones are a wonderful counterpoint to the cool fresh citrus taste of ceviche.

They are almost always cooked to order, so you may have to wait a little longer for your ceviche—well worth it. In other countries, and even from one Costa Rican region to another, shapes and toppings for patacones will vary. They might be larger, either round or oblong or even shaped into baskets, and topped with all manner of beans, meat, cheese, fish, vegetables and salsas.

Depending on the country, they are also known as tostones or fritos . A patacón heaped high with other delights is a hearty meal in itself.

4. If you start a conversation about patacones, somebody will inevitably bring up “ Patacón Pisao ,”

Its a popular Dominican song about a guy who insists his wife make him patacones. Pisao is a vernacular version of the word pisado , stepped on — smashed, flattened.

In fact, all patacones are “stepped on.” “Patacón Pisao” is just a song title; it does not refer to any specific dish. It may be used by a particular restaurant as their name for a patacón arreglado , a patacón with any combination of delicious things piled on top.

5. When shopping for plantains, you may well run across two fused together.

This is called a guápil . Actually, any plant product with two units combined in this manner is called a guápil. Finding a guápil is considered good luck, but conjoined plantains are so common as to dilute the good fortune; coffee beans or other less frequent guápiles are stronger mojo.

Also, a double plantain is sold as a singleton, for the single unit price. This is likely because they are not considered suitable for making patacones, due to the lack of roundness or uniformity.

If patacones are not part of your Costa Rican diet , you are missing out on another great dish that gives the lie to the myth that Tico food is only rice and beans. If you are fortunate enough to find a restaurant that piles them high with goodies, you have an exciting new alternative for a dinner out. If not, don’t neglect this underappreciated delight as a side dish or a snack.
