Vigo

Vigo – 10 Reasons Why You Should Visit

Vigo is the name of the most populous city in Galicia. It is often overlooked, but by far one of the most wonderful cities in Spain – and in Europe as a whole. There’s a lot to see and do, so if you want to visit a bit of a different city, this is it!

From our perspective, it is a must-visit city, and here we are sharing 10 reasons why you should visit Vigo on your vacation in Spain.

1. A beautiful and important city

Vigo is a beautiful city. It has the well known port with plenty of boats, where you can enjoy the view across the water, or just sit in the sun and relax.

It also has its typical Galician architecture, which is very spectacular – especially in the very central part of the city.

But the main thing that makes Vigo beautiful is the nature that surrounds the city. Not far away, you will notice green forests and mountains. The city itself has more than one wonderful part, so it is not even necessary to leave the city to get a great, green taste of nature.

Aside from what makes Vigo attractive: It’s also a very important city. The largest in Galicia, and basically away to acces Spain by sea from the west.

2. Wonderful and delicious food

Vigo has great food. Just like the rest of Galicia. And that is our second major reason to visit it.

Galicians are particularly good with fish, and this is quite clear in Vigo as well. The city is right by the coast, and every day, there are ships bringing in great tasting fish to the city.

The food in Vigo is quite affordable. They make many great dishes, and the local restaurants are amazing. The locals in Vigo are particularly good with octopus, but they have many other unique dishes as well. Try it out when you get there!

3. One-day distance from other great cities

Galicia is not hugely populated. Therefore it might come as a surprise that Vigo is quite close to so many other great destinations.

The main one is Santiago de Compostela, which is only a short ride away. You can take a high speed train to get there, or you can go by your own car. It’s quite easy, and not far away. Public transport tickets are cheap.

If you want to consider further up north, you can pass Santiago and move up to A Coruña. Another famous port city that is equally beautiful as Vigo, although with a slightly different vibe.

You can also go south and visit northern Portugal. Porto is a magical city, always worth a visit. Great alternative options are Braga and Guimarães. They are even a bit closer than Porto, and you can go there by bus for less than 12 euros.

4. A unique look into Galician culture

Vigo is typically Galician. After all, it’s the largest city in the province. So it should give you a very nice view of Galician culture, which is definitely worth experiencing.

From the architecture to the food, from the people to the events – there are plenty of ways to experience it. We suggest you to go there and soak it all in on your own.

5. Very friendly people

Galicians are known as being very friendly. Just like the Portuguese and the other northern Spaniards. You will be treated with respect and with interest. People are happy to strike up conversations, and if you need help with anything, you never need to hesitate to ask.

6. Distinctly unique nature surrounds the city

We talked about this in the first point, but it’s worth it to elaborate just a little bit.

From Vigo, you can do a boat trip and sail a bit in the Atlantic Ocean. This is very special. You can also go south or east and not after long, you will be right at the mountains.

The area that surrounds Vigo is very green. Galicia is like that as a whole. Compared to the rest of Spain, it’s a distinctly unique nature, and it’s amazing to be near. It’s also great for a hike if you are into that – we highly recommend it.

7. Fresh air and nice environment

Vigo is not a very poluted city – the air is cleaner than in the capital Madrid, and it will feel very refreshing if you are just arriving from a larger city.

Vigo is right by the ocean, and the air always feels fresh. It’s a huge plus, because most popular travel destinations can be poluted, and that is obviously not the case here. Something like this will never be the main reason to visit anywhere – but it will always be a very nice addition, hence why we are placing it as the 7th reason to stop by Vigo during your Spanish holidays.

8. Interesting architecture

Another great thing about Vigo is the architecture. Discovering it is something that most travelers are enjoying when they arrive.

The majority of the buildings in central Vigo are from the 19th century. And these are quite beautiful, a bit reminiscent of other Spanish cities, but with a few slight tweaks.

Vigo also has newer architecture which is more avant-garde. These constructions are unique, although sometimes they can be a bit like the ones you see in the Basque Country.

All in all, Vigo has great architecture, and it’s a joy to discover.

9. Not full of tourists

Vigo has travelers coming in, but not any huge amount. It is largely unvisited by western tourists, who instead prefer cities along the eastern and southern coasts of Spain.

That can be good and bad. On the negative sides, it means Vigo has fewer hotels and hostels than a lot of other Spanish cities. But there are way more positives. For example, it means fewer annoyances. Being a visitor there is more special, you get better treatment compared to cities that are used to millions of visitors every year. It has influence on the prices, they don’t get inflated as much. And on the streets, you mostly see local people.

The majority of visitors in Vigo are from Portugal or from other Spanish regions. A lot of pilgrims who finish the Camino in Santiago, will often head to Vigo for a day or two to check it out.

10. Vigo is a very affordable city

Galicia is not poor in any way. In fact, they are doing quite well economically compared to many other Spanish regions, and compared to Portugal.

Therefore, it can be a surprise that a trip to Vigo can be so affordable. Hotels and apartments usually have great prices. The food is amazing, but is often cheap – especially fish, which is cheaper than a lot of other areas in Europe, while also tasting better.

Vigo is more expensive than the Portuguese cities, but it’s much cheaper than Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, and so on. And that can be a great advantage when you visit it.

Conclusion on Vigo

Vigo is an awesome city – we highly recommend you to visit it if you get the chance. Planning it into your trip is a great idea if you’re traveling to northwestern Spain or northern Portugal. It’s a great city to stop by, even if it’s just for one day. But at the same time, it is interesting enough to spend more days in Vigo as well.

Let us know in the comments if you have any thoughts about Vigo!

Travelling in Galicia by car is the best option as the train service suffers from delays and its timings are not convenient. Galicia has three international airports, thereby making air travel easier for tourists from abroad.

Abundant in seafood delicacies, its highlight is that almost half the world's mussels are 'harvested' in Galicia. Popular dishes are Empanada, Polvo à Feira, Caldo Galego, Bacallau ao alvariño and Churros.

Galicia is mainly a wine region and a paradise for wine lovers. But, if you like some strong alcohol, then there is a Licor Café and Queimada. However, beware because some Licor Café can cause problems.

Galicia is a safe place to stay. To stay on the safer side, protect yourself in big cities. Of all cities, Vigo and the capital - Santiago de Compostela - are the safest.

Peinador Airport is located 10km from the city downtown. It is well connected with - Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Canary Islands, Alicante, Seville, Valladolid, Paris, Copenhagen and Frankfurt, also many charter flights operate from here.

One of the best options to reach Vigo is by sea. Vigo's port receives thousands of passengers every year from cruises. There are daily trips to the Cies Islands and excursions through the Ria. Throughout the year, there are transportations with a schedule to Moana and Cangas del Morrazo.

There are three main ways to reach Vigo. The Northwest dual carriageway links the city to Madrid, 667km away. The Rias Baixas dual carriageway runs from Vigo to the North of Portugal, passing through Tui, Braga, and Porto, linking Lisbon and Portugal's motorways network. Few cities enjoy such a magnificent natural setting as VIGO . Arrayed along the sloping southern shoreline of its namesake estuary, it enjoys superb views not only of the bay itself, surrounded by green forest ridges, but also out towards the ocean. While it’s undeniably magnificent when seen from a ship entering the harbour, once ashore it fails to live up to that initial promise, and few visitors use it as anything more than an overnight stop.

Although Vigo is now the largest city in Galicia, home to some 300,000 people, Baiona, closer to the mouth of the ría , was the principal port hereabouts until the nineteenth century. Then the railways arrived, and Vigo became the first Galego town to industrialize, with the opening of several sardine canneries. It’s now Spain’s chief fishing port, with wharves and quays that stretch almost 5km along the shore.

Pride of place in the middle still belongs to the passenger port where generations of Galego emigrants have embarked for the Americas. These days, cruise passengers mingle with tourists arriving at the Estación Marítima de Ría off the Cangas ferry, and set off to explore the steep, cobbled streets that climb up into the old city, known as O Berbés and crammed with shops, bars and restaurants.

Along the seafront early in the morning, kiosks revive fishermen with strong coffee, while there and in the lively daily market hall nearby, the Mercado da Pedra , their catch is sold. Immediately below, on the aptly named Rúa da Pescadería , women set out plates of fresh oysters on permanent granite tables to tempt passers-by. On Rúa Carral , shops sell kitsch marine souvenirs.

Travel essentials

Why go now?

Mainland Spain's westernmost city is cultured, gritty and highly affordable. This Galician city also has a proud heritage. Vigo was where the Roman Empire met the ocean – and, in the 19th century, it became the main transatlantic departure point for a nation. As one of the few large Spanish cities without a flight connection from the UK, Vigo has been off the radar for British travellers. But that changes later this month when Air Nostrum starts flying to the city from Luton.

Next weekend is an excellent time to visit: the Reconquest Festival takes place on 28 March, marking the 1809 uprising when the citizens expelled Napoleon's army – the first city in Spain to reclaim independence from the French. Huge outdoor markets are set up, as fisherman and farmers act out the conflict.

Until this month, the best way to reach Vigo from Britain has been via Santiago de Compostela, served from Gatwick by easyJet and from Stansted by Ryanair. But on 30 March, the Iberia partner, Air Nostrum, opens a new link from Luton to Vigo's Peinador airport, 9km east of the city centre. You can book through Iberia (020 3684 3774; iberia.com ); there are a few flights over Easter, with fares at £119 return, before summer services start in earnest in July.

The airport bus, No L9A, runs into the city every 30 minutes (hourly on Sundays). The airport stop is across the road on the right as you exit the terminal. The flat fare is €1.32, the same as applies to all other city bus services in Vigo ( vitrasa.es ).

Get your bearings

Vigo spreads inland from a dramatically corrugated coastline. The temporary railway terminal, Vigo-Guixar (1), marks the eastern end of the city centre. Going west from here, 19th-century avenues parallel the shore. The main drag is Rúa Urzaiz and its continuation Rúa do Principe, running to the hub of the city: the Porta do Sol (2). The old town, Casco Vello, tumbles west and north to the water and the wharves that for a time comprised Spain's main gateway to the world. Avenida Beiramar separates the city from the sea.

Confusingly, there are two tourist offices. The Vigo tourist office is in the ferry ticket office (00 34 986 430 577; turismodevigo.org ) at the Estación Maritima (3), and opens 10am to 5pm daily. The Galician regional bureau (4) is across the road from the port at Rúa Cánovas del Castillo 22; 9.30am to 2pm and 4.30 to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday, 10am to 1.30pm Saturdays, closed Sundays.

Pick of the bunch is the Gran Hotel Nagari (5) at Plaza de Compostela 21 (00 34 902 444 456; gruposolvidahoteles.com ), which has a rooftop swimming pool looking over the ocean. The cheapest double room, a "Loft Premium" costs €101, excluding breakfast.

The Hotel Puerto de Sol is at the heart of the action on the Porta do Sol (2) (00 34 986 222 364; hotelpuertadelsol.es ), where the 19th-century structure has been comfortably modernised. It costs as little as €45 for a double room, or €79 for a studio room apartment, breakfast not included.

The Hotel Vigo Plaza (6) at Rúa Progreso 13 (00 34 986 228 243; hotelvigoplaza.com ) is smart, central and staggeringly cheap at €36 for an "economic" double, including breakfast.

Take a view

Start the day with a panoramic vision of the city. To defend Vigo's naturally formidable harbour against the attentions of the Royal Navy and the Portuguese, the Castro fort (7) was built in 1665 atop the city's highest hill. Today, you can climb to the top and roam around the ruins in the Parque do Castro from dawn – which arrives over an hour later than on Spain's Mediterranean coast.

Take a hike

Descend to the Praza do Rei (8) and continue north over the Porto do Sol (2) into the tangle of streets that leads down to the sea past the busy Mercado das Ostras (9).

Enjoy the view across the harbour to the steep, wooded opposite shore, then turn east along the Paseo Maritimo – pausing at the statue of Jules Verne (10), a bronze tribute to the writer who featured the city in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. He perches on the legs of a giant squid. At the spectacular modern Xunta de Galicia (11), turn inland and head south up Rúa Concepción, which becomes Rúa Colón. It joins the Rúa do Principe at the Museum of Contemporary Art or MARCO (12) (00 34 986 113 900; marcovido.com ) – built in 1861 as the city's courthouse and jail, it's been a cultural centre for two decades. Open 11am- 2.30pm and 5-9pm daily except Sunday afternoons and Mondays, admission free.

Lunch on the run

Vigo claims to be the largest fishing port in the world (though Tokyo may have a rather stronger claim). Seafood is almost always fresh and good, but for some of the best seek out the La Cantina del Puerto (13), on a jetty in the port (00 34 986 224 516; lacantinadel puerto.es ). Order the Galician favourite, pulpo (octopus), either as a tapa (€5) or a ración (€9).

Locals insist octopus should not be eaten late in the day, when the flavour has become too strong, and that you must accompany it only with white wine – drinking water with octopus, they say, can make you feel bloated.

Window shopping

Test the strength of sterling in a centro comercial: Vigo has about a dozen of these modern malls. with the most convenient, A Laxe (14), standing awkwardly on the waterside. It opens 10am to 10pm daily. But the streets south and east of the Porta do Sol are full of more interesting independent stores such as Almacenes Gonzalez (15), a delicatessen bursting with tempting produce at Ronda Don Bosco (00 34 986 221 017). The 2.30 to 5pm siesta is widely observed; most shops are closed on Sunday, and some do not open on Saturday evenings.

An aperitif

Order a local draught beer (€2.20) at La Taberna de Tony (16) at Rúa Gil 4, and you get a generous serving of tapas. The bar's slogan translates as "no wi-fi, no TV, talk among yourselves"; 11am-midnight, with a 5-7.30pm break. .

Dining with the locals

At the old-school and slightly theatrical Restaurante Don Quijote (17) at Rúa Laxe 4 (00 34 986 229 346), a generous portion of merluza Gallega (hake in a rich sauce with roast vegetables and garlic) costs €12.90, and a glass of local wine €2.50.

Sunday morning: go to church

For a spectacular fresh perspective take bus L17 to Avenida Doña Fermina – which you follow as it winds up to the hilltop Ermita de Nosa Señora da Guia (18). High above the city's hubbub, you can understand the message to worshippers: Aqui puedes escuchar a Dios – "Here you can listen to God".

In town, the 19th-century church of Santa Maria (19), "La Colegiata", has 1960s stained glass by Padrós Elias; 9.30am to 1pm, 6pm to 8.30pm.

Out to brunch

Despite the name, at the Gran Cerverceria El Puerto (20) you can get a lot more than beer. This engaging 19th-century den at Monteros Ríos 10 (00 34 986 437 551) serves good coffee from 9am, plus dishes from simple bocadillos (sandwiches) to paella.

A walk by the shore

Take bus L15A from Praza Espana (21) (eight minutes past the hour on Sundays, more frequent other days) to the beach at Samil. Walk back towards town along the shore, with fingers of rock reaching to the ocean.

Cultural afternoon

Where the beach ends, the city's leading attraction begins. The Museo de Mar (22) describes Vigo's tempestuous relationship with the sea (00 34 986 247 750; museodomar.com ; 10am to noon and 5pm to 7pm daily, except Monday; €3). This former canning factory was reinvented as a combination of aquarium and museum of social history. You can see the foundations of a fortress dating from the 8th century BC and a 19th-century submarine invented by a local entrepreneur.

Icing on the cake

On the harbour's opposite side is the breezy, relaxed resort of Cangas. Ferries sail at weekends on the half-hour from Vigo's Estación Maritima (3) and hourly from Cangas (day return €4.45). When the clocks go forward next weekend, sunset in Vigo will be at 9pm – making an early evening boat trip the ideal appetiser.

Vigo Day Trips – Best Places Near Vigo

Vigo Day Trips

While Vigo is a highly interesting city to be staying in, it would be foolish to ignore the other cities and towns in the vicinity of Galicia’s chief port. Lots of tourists decide to embark on a day trip from Vigo – and there are several good options, as you will see below.

The city of Vigo is located in southwestern Galicia which happens to be in the northwestern corner of Spain. That means Vigo is near the Portuguese border, so a day trip to Portugal is just as viable as a brief journey to another Spanish city.

Let’s have a look at the best places near Vigo.

  • 1 Santiago de Compostela
  • 3 Pontevedra

Santiago de Compostela

Santiago de Compostela is the most visited city in Galicia. If you are aware of the history of the city, or if you have ever heard of El Camino de Santiago (the world’s most famous pilgrimage), you already know why.

According to the legend, it is the shrine of St. James the Great. For centuries pilgrims have been walking to Santiago de Compostela. But you don’t have to be a pilgrim to visit the city – you can simply take a train from Vigo and see all the main attractions as a regular tourist.

The oldest part of Santiago de Compostela is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. That includes the Cathedral of Santiago which is the most important site in the city.

Santiago de Compostela has a traditional and magical vibe. It is an amazing place to visit, and if you happen to be in Vigo or in any other city near Santiago, it is such a great choice to stop by. Even if it is just for one day. Along with a visit to the Cathedral, you can wander through the old streets, buy some souvenirs, and get a meal at one of the local restaurants.

It only takes 50 minutes to take the train from Vigo to Santiago. This is with the fastest train along the Atlantic coast – the MD (media distancia) train. A single ticket costs 9.20€. You can also take the regional train which takes a half-hour longer but tickets are priced at 7.60€.

Driving yourself will take a bit over an hour. It is also possible to take a bus from Vigo to Santiago, but taking the train is almost always easier.

A Coruña is the second-largest city in Galicia. It is known as one of the most historic cities in Spain as the city dates back to Roman times. A Coruña has famous attractions such as the Tower of Hercules and a wide selection of unique stores and shopping centres .

Unlike Vigo, A Coruña has a beach in the city centre, which makes it very suitable for tourism. Some people go to A Coruña for sightseeing, others go there to have a calm beach holiday. You can do a bit of everything.

If you want to go from Vigo to A Coruña, you have to take the same train as you would to Santiago de Compostela. You just have to continue a bit longer. It is the same line on the Atlantic Axis with the MD train. The trip takes an hour and 20 minutes with the fastest train and you can expect to pay 14.95€ for a one-way ticket.

A Coruña is definitely one of the best day trips you can make from Vigo since it is one of the most important cities in the region. But we would actually recommend staying in A Coruña for more than just a day. Maybe you can consider a weekend trip instead. A Coruña has some really nice hotels that are fairly priced, and it is a city that grows on you the longer you stay.

Arguably the easiest day trip from Vigo you could make.

Pontevedra is a neighboring city and it is located less than 30 kilometers north of Vigo. You may have heard about Pontevedra in the news or in documentaries about Spain – it is one of the cities with the best urban planning and that makes it ultra-comfortable to visit!

Many Spanish families have moved to Pontevedra in recent years. Famously, cars are strictly limited in several areas of the city, and the centre is entirely car-free. The Spaniards recognize Pontevedra as one of the cities with the highest quality of living, but most foreigners have still not discovered the wonders of Pontevedra.

Pontevedra has many interesting attractions such as the Saint Mary church, the church of the Pilgrim Virgin, the Gothic Convent, the Mendoza Mansion, and the statue of the Ravachol Parrot.

To sum it up – Pontevedra is an old and historic city that is currently undergoing a fantastic revival.

There are trains between Vigo and Pontevedra every hour of the day. The fastest one is the MD with only 19 minutes of travel time. The regional train is the cheapest to take: A ticket is 2.65€ and the travel time is 31 minutes. You can also drive, take a taxi, or take one of the many buses that connect these two Galician cities. It is such an easy day trip to make, and we highly recommend visiting Pontevedra!

Ourense is the first inland destination that we are covering so far. It is situated about 90 kilometers east of Vigo, and Ourense is primarily famous for its history and for its hot springs.

It has a population of over 100,000 inhabitants so it is about the same size as Santiago de Compostela. The city was founded by the Romans who settled there due to the presence of hot springs – locally known as Burgas. Some ruins and buildings from Roman times still remain. But the most interesting part of Ourense is arguably the Medieval parts of the city. It is full of cute and narrow streets, and there are quite a few bars and restaurants in central Ourense.

Some of the top attractions are the Cathedral, the old bridge (Ponte Vella), and the Plaza Mayor.

You can take the train from Vigo to Ourense. The trip takes an hour and a half, and a ticket costs a little over 10 euros. You can either take the MD or the ALVIA train – the travel time is about the same, so pick the one that suits you. Several buses also go there, and of course, you can drive if you have access to a car.

Lugo is located northwest of Vigo, very inland in Galicia. It is the fourth most populous city in the community and from a touristic point of view, it is a highly interesting destination!

Just like many other cities in Galicia, Lugo’s history dates back to the Celts and later the Romans. It is currently the only city in the world that is fully surrounded by Roman walls – and the walls are intact. It is a major attraction to see the walls, and they are also listed as a World Heritage Site.

Lugo also has the massive Santa María Cathedral which is also worth a visit. The St. Francis Convent and the Palace of the Arts are also some top-notch attractions.

Making the day trip to Lugo is a bit more complicated than the other places mentioned in the article. It’s farther away, and to get there you will have to pass through either Santiago or Ourense on the day. Driving from Vigo to Lugo is the most practical, so rent a car if you can. But buses are also going several times per day, so that is also an option.

As mentioned in the introduction, Vigo is situated relatively close to the Portuguese border. That means you can easily head into Portugal for a quick visit if you so desire.

The top destination would be the city of Porto.

Porto is one of the most charming and romantic cities in Europe. Located by the Douro River, Porto is famous for its port wine, Francesinha sandwiches, and cool attractions such as Livraria Lello, Casa da Música, and the São Bento station decorated with azulejos.

If you are planning a visit to Porto, read more about the top attractions here , as well as the best places to stay in Porto .

It’s easy and straightforward to make the trip from Vigo to Porto. Spanish train operator RENFE has a direct route between the two cities. It takes 2 hours and 22 minutes and a ticket will cost you 14.95€. The train goes from the Vigo Guixar station to Porto Campanhã. From Campanhã you should take a local train to the central São Bento station. Naturally, you can also take a bus or go by car if you don’t want to take the train – read about all the transportation options here .

Braga is even closer to Vigo than Porto is. It also gets significantly fewer tourists, so if you fancy a more authentic Portuguese experience, maybe Braga should be the destination.

It is the largest city in the Minho region, and it is famous as Portugal’s religious centre. Braga has some nice cultural attractions – most of them are very old – but it is also a city with a lot of students and it has a youthful vibe when you hang around the city centre.

Unfortunately, the train from Vigo to Porto does not stop in Braga, so you either have to take a bus from Vigo’s main bus terminal, or you have to drive yourself. The trip will take around two hours.

This small border town is great to visit for one day if you want some nice food. Tui has several awesome seafood restaurants. The town is super charming and feels like a mix of Portugal and Galicia, which obviously makes sense due to its location.

You get from Vigo to Tui by hopping on one of the buses headed to Porto. When the bus stops in Tui (check beforehand if it does), get off and spend a few hours there. There are also local buses making the route. If you have access to a car, you simply drive there – it is directly south and the trip only takes 25 minutes.
