k-mitch-hodge-OHIp0nv8HvM-unsplash_edite

This incredible 14 day journey has been designed to offer the history, heritage, landscapes and cultures of the British Isles. By spending a few days in four different countries, we will understand the distinct characteristics of each nation, while enjoying the outdoor-themed highlights along the way.   In Ireland, we have the opportunity to explore Dublin by foot visiting the Book of Kells, enjoying a pint of Guinness, as well as experiencing the impressive beauty of Powerscourt House & Glendalough. A ferry takes us to Wales where we will enjoy more fantastic hikes, medieval castles and learn about Welsh history and their language. In the English Lake District, enjoy a traditional cream tea, a local market, and a creamery where we watch their famous cheese being made. A steamship takes us to the starting point of one of our scenic hikes. The Scottish Highlands offers wildlife, tasty treats and a hike to the summit of Ben Vrackie, where the 360 degree views over Pitlochry and the countryside are simply stunning. We end our trip in Edinburgh with a walking tour and a bit of storytelling.   Click here  for more information!

Situated between Russia in the north and Iran and Turkey in the southwest, lies the region best known as the Caucasus. Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia were all former Soviet Republics, each with their own rich and unique history, language and culture.

The Caucasus is famous for its hospitality, sumptuous foods, fine wines and stunning mountain scenery. Join us on this fascinating journey into a lesser-known region of the world.   Click here  for more information!

Horizontal landscape image of Iceland showing a waterfall, lush fjords, and puffin birds

Explore the rugged beauty of this North Atlantic island nation. For most people, the name Iceland conjures up little more than snow and ice. But it is much more than ice - in its sagas, puffins, glaciers, fjords, active volcanoes, lava fields and hot springs, you'll find the perfect blend of nature, culture and history.

We begin in the capital city of Reykjavik and continue south along the scenic coast, taking in lava fields, hot springs and bird cliffs enroute. See the remarkable Geysir, the geyser from which all geysers derive their name, and Hveravellir Hot Springs - an oasis of warmth amidst two interior glaciers. Experience the hospitality of Icelanders in the quaint coastal towns of Akureyri and Höfn, and enjoy an exciting whale watching trip from Husavik.   Click here  for more information!

The largest island in the Mediterranean, Sicily’s incredible natural wonders, mild climate and rich culture offers an unparalleled feast for the senses. The island beckons travelers with lush mountains, simmering volcanoes, picture perfect seaside villages, and crystal colored waters. Settled by diverse ancient civilizations for over 3,000 years, this history is reflected in its architecture, cuisine, and treasured archaeological sites.  Malta is truly one of Southern Europe’s travel gems, boasting an impressive 7,000 years of history. Kenya & Tanzania

Horizontal Landscape image of the Serengeti desert with hot air balloons in background, w

The great parks of East Africa - the Serengeti, Maasai Mara, Tarangire and the Ngorongoro Crater offer a unique and overwhelming wildlife safari experience that is simply unequaled. The Maasai Mara and Serengeti are arguably the most famous game parks in the world and home to the greatest wildlife migration on earth. Millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles cross crocodile-infested rivers and are hunted by lions, leopards, and cheetahs in a spectacle of survival to reach greener pastures. Our views of Ngorongoro Crater are unforgettable. The crater is home to over 20,000 large animals including some of Tanzania's last remaining black rhinos. Tarangire's open savannah with its primeval baobab trees is filled with roaming herds of elephants and an impressive array of predators.  Enjoy tribal encounters with the Maasai and the nomadic Bushman, which are truly unforgettable experiences. Our safari concludes in historic Stone Town, Zanzibar.  Click here  for more information!

14 Best Senior-friendly Travel Groups

These senior-friendly travel companies offer tours and travel experiences as diverse as their clients.

elder trek tours

The benefits of travel, whether it's a refreshing weekend getaway or a month-long trip to a new destination, are undeniable. And for retirees and seniors who have time and a travel budget, the opportunities are nearly endless — their own city, state, country, and even the whole world are all waiting to be explored.

It should be recognized that seniors are as diverse as any other generation, perhaps even more so as their years of experience have taken them in many directions. While their interests, abilities, values, and habits may vary, it can safely be said that for many, travel is in their plans.

Seniors travel to visit family, learn about the countries of their ancestors , or explore new destinations. Many seek immersive experiences, educational opportunities, or adventure. And travel companies are responding to their needs and wishes by offering tour options ranging from independent to fully guided, budget to luxury, and group to individual. The 14 organizations listed below are either aimed specifically at mature clients or feature experiences that are flexible enough to accommodate a variety of travelers.

Walking the World

Operating out of Grand Junction, Colorado, Walking the World offers walking and hiking tours mainly for travelers over the age of 50 who want to be immersed in the destinations they choose. Experienced hikers will enjoy its Rocky Mountain National Park tour , for example, with treks of up to 10 miles on some days during the eight-day itinerary. Meanwhile, the Ireland trip covers 11 days of exploring fishing villages, rolling green hills, the stunning Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle Peninsula, and Killarney National Park. Daily walks range from four to eight miles and are described as gentle to moderate.

Road Scholar

Originally launched as Elderhostel in 1975, the company rebranded in 2010 as Road Scholar , recognizing the values and interests of lifelong learners who have participated in their lectures, tours, field trips, and educational experiences over the years. Participants are typically over the age of 50 and ready to learn from travel or focus on a specific interest. Trip themes such as grandparent adventures (special types of trips you can take with your grandchild), cruises, urban exploration, art and history, historical sites, and academic topics can be browsed by destination, activity level, and interest to help clients select their ideal tour experience.

Adventures Abroad

While Adventures Abroad largely caters to travelers over 50, tours are open to adults of all ages, and operate on every continent except for Antarctica. The company's "soft adventure" trips, which concentrate on the culture and history of a destination, don't include strenuous activities, though a reasonable degree of fitness and the ability to walk are required. Trips are rated from one to three based on physical activity, with the first level featuring only leisurely walks and level two meaning more time on your feet each day. Level-three trips might include walks or hikes on uneven ground for three to seven hours, though at a leisurely pace. Specific trips are suggested for each activity level for easy planning.

An adventure travel company designed for people ages 50 and over, ElderTreks offers small-group adventures — think wildlife safaris, hiking trips, cultural journeys, and other unique expeditions — in more than 100 countries. The tours are rated by activity level, ranging from one to five. At level one, travelers should be able to walk for one to two hours, whereas at level five, they'll need to be capable of hiking for eight to 10 hours.

Senior Cycling

Specializing in bicycle tours for active adults ages 50 and up, Senior Cycling limits groups to a maximum of 13 participants. And they are always accompanied by the "sag wagon" in case someone needs a break from riding. Trips are rated at two levels: intermediate (for the occasional rider who prefers bike paths and flat terrain for 20–40 miles per day) and advanced (for those who are at ease with up to 50 miles per day, hills, and traffic). Custom tours can also be arranged for families or groups of friends.

Firebird Tours

With a focus on clients ages 50 and over, Firebird Tours offers small group trips to destinations in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East that deliver value, comfort, and quality. Themes for guided tours include gastronomy, history, architecture, and the Northern Lights , as well as theater and opera. Private family tours are also available, with destinations and activities suitable for a wider age range depending on the group.

Seniors interested in active vacations should check out Backroads , based out of Berkeley, California. While tours are open to all ages, the majority of participants tend to be over 50. Guided biking, walking, and hiking tours to a variety of destinations are geared toward adults, but also include options for families traveling with "teens and kids," "older teens and 20s," and those in their "20s and beyond." The company's Dolce Tempo tours offer a more relaxed pace, and include trips such as the Easygoing E-bike Tour in California wine country and the Easygoing Multi-adventure Tour in New Zealand.

Overseas Adventure Travel

With a variety of trips available to destinations on every continent, Overseas Adventure Travel makes a great choice if you're interested in seeing the world via small-ship cruises. In addition to guided land tours for groups of eight to 16, OAT offers sailings through the Norwegian Fjords, along West Africa's coast, and throughout the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. Mature travelers are often attracted to the flexibility of the trips and the ability to personalize activities. Recognizing that many of their customers travel alone — including a whopping 85 percent of their female clients — the company has created its getaways with solo travelers in mind, whether they're first-timers or experienced adventurers.

EF Go Ahead Tours

Operating out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Go Ahead Tours offers a selection of small group tours for 10 to 22 guests. The senior-friendly trips focus on interests such as food and wine, adventure, and safaris, as well as specific destinations and seasonal events (think Oktoberfest in Germany, annual holiday markets in Europe, or St. Patrick's Day in Ireland). Traveling alone? The company's solo tours provide private rooms and personalized experiences especially geared toward those traveling by themselves. Clients can also gather their own group and take advantage of the services of EF's professional coordinators.

Kensington Tours

If you're looking to create a fully customized, privately guided trip based on your group's specific needs and travel preferences, look no further than Kensington Tours . Their expertise in more than 100 destinations worldwide makes planning easy, whether the goal is a culturally immersive experience, enjoying fine wine and dining, discovering the history of a place, or relaxation. While these arrangements are ideal for mature travelers who appreciate ease and luxury, the company also provides experiences for multigenerational travel in countries like Thailand, Japan, Iceland, and South Africa, featuring kid-friendly trips that come with private vehicles, local guides, and dining options fit for the whole family.

Intrepid Travel

A leading adventure tour operator known for its efforts to make travel accessible to all, Intrepid Travel offers a good mix of bespoke and ready-made itinerary options that can be adapted to suit your group's comfort level. Intrepid's Accessible Tours are especially inclusive, with trips that are designed for every type of traveler. Whichever trip you decide to book, you'll have access to local destination specialists to help you choose the perfect places to stay as well as organize transportation, activities, and guided tours, depending on your needs. The company's Walking & Trekking trips, suitable for a range of fitness levels, are especially popular with seniors, though adults of all ages are free to join in.

YMT Vacations

In business since 1967, YMT Vacations designs all-inclusive trips with mature travelers in mind. Prices cover hotel accommodations, guided sightseeing tours, baggage handling, and the expertise of tour directors and driver guides. Destinations include Hawaii, Alaska, Europe, North America, Central and South America, Africa, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, among others, and the company arranges travel for popular events such as the Rose Parade in California. A number of river cruise and transatlantic sailing options are also available.

Grand European Travel

Grand European Travel is an AARP-preferred travel provider (check the website for members-only discounts) that promotes itself as a one-stop shop to help clients plan their desired travel experiences. The company represents a collection of 30 travel brands — including the likes of Trafalgar and Insight Tours — which, altogether, cover seven continents. Offerings range from budget to luxury getaways, and everything from cruises to land tours. Thinking of taking a multigenerational trip? Browse the company's family experiences section, stocked with tours fit for all ages, whether you're into all-inclusive European river cruises or exploring U.S. national parks.

Country Walkers

Country Walkers aims to introduce travelers to new landscapes and cultures around the world by traveling on foot. Established in 1979, the Vermont-based operator offers walking tours in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. Tour types include guided (in a small group of up to 18) and self-guided (in a private group of up to 12), providing a great option for independent exploration. Travelers can choose from five levels, starting at "easy walking," which includes a daily distance of two to six miles for up to four hours per day. "Moderate walking," the mid-range option, suggests four to 10 miles and up to six hours of walking per day. Trips at the "challenging walking" level might go up to seven hours a day on foot, covering anywhere from six to 14 miles. Guests of all ages should be able to find a destination and tour that's best suited for their interests and fitness level.

Editoral Review of ElderTreks

Don’t let the name “Elder” fool you -- elder in this case means travelers who have reached age 50 and above, and adventurous 50-and-overs at that.

Founded in 1987, Toronto-based ElderTreks was the world’s first adventure travel company that limits its guests to ages 50 and over (exceptions are made for younger companions over 18). ElderTreks trips span the globe across more than 100 countries on seven continents, and also include expedition-style sea journeys.

What Makes ElderTreks Stand Out

  • Tours for active seniors
  • Exotic, off the beaten path destinations
  • Small group sizes
  • All-inclusive packages
  • Great value

Travelers on an ElderTreks trip will find themselves among others of a similar age, providing an immediate connection. They offer a large array of trips, all with an effort to remain sustainable and responsible. They are also known for having extremely knowledgeable tour guides, well versed in each destination and catering to the needs of the over 50 age group. Some trips also allow for visits to local schools or orphanages. Close contact with local residents is encouraged.

Who Travels With ElderTreks?

  • Guests ages 50 and over
  • Active and adventurous travelers

The largest number of participants in an ElderTreks land-based group is 16, allowing for plenty of personal attention from your tour guide. Their tours are especially welcoming to single travelers over 50 as well - no single supplements or penalties here (other than sharing a room).

senior couple holding hands walking on the street

Eldertreks tours are designed for active seniors that like to be on the move. If you’re the kind of traveler for whom a pair of hiking boots are an important suitcase item and you’re eager to stretch your limits, Eldertreks may be just what you’re looking for. You are energetic, adventurous, and excited about meeting other active 50+ travelers.

Tours are decently priced for the somewhat budget conscious, but willing to spend more for once-in-a-lifetime experiences. The prices come across as higher than most other tours, but keep in mind that it’s because they are all-inclusive.

Top Destinations

  • Asia & Pacific
  • Europe/Mid East

Trips are offered all over the world in a wide variety of locations, including the polar regions. ElderTreks trip options also include expedition-style sea journeys and active hiking trips to places like Europe, Africa, and the Galapagos Islands. They also offer tours to Cuba, and have been for over 20 years - if you're older and wanting to visit Cuba, consider Eldertreks for the vast experience they have running people-to-people tours in Cuba.

Eldertreks Travel Style

They aren’t your average adventure nor senior travel company. They take you to places off the beaten path that are diverse and exotic. Travel to Uganda and spend time with the rare mountain gorillas. Or visit Rwanda , home of the golden monkeys and Volcanoes National Park. Eldertreks goal is to help older travelers get outdoors to experience the wildlife, new environments, and explore new cultures.

a lion cub sitting on a tree branch

Hotels are chosen for comfort and location and most come with private washrooms. They try to use accommodations which reflect the local culture rather than big hotels. The goal is to aim for a “5 star” experience, not necessarily “5 star” accommodation. Note that this means you will often be dealing with narrow staircases, no elevator, and very basic amenities.

Transportation on all land itineraries are described as “private, comfortable, and a little wild”. While you’ll be using a minivan or bus most of the time, you might also find yourself riding elephants, camels, on a riverboat safari, sailboat, or even a helicopter. And just about everything except international airfare is included in the rates, which -- while not the least expensive tours out there -- offer good value for the money.

Eldertreks Physical Level

Eldertreks tours are rated on an activity level from 1 (easy) to 5 (challenging). It’s best to choose an activity level suited to your tastes for any given trip. It’s a simple guideline of what physical condition you should be in to enjoy your adventure.

group of seniors hiking in a park with backpacks

At the minimum, be prepared to walk through varying levels of rugged terrain and various slope grades - be prepared for weather conditions that may make the surfaces slippery or muddy. You’ll be going through archeological sites, towns/cities and/or rainforest that call for 1 to 5+ hours of walking, depending on the activity level of the trip.

Trips with Eldertreks are categorized into 5 different activity levels:

Easy : Walk up to 1 to 2 hours; at least 1 mile (1.6 km) per day.

Moderately Easy : Walk/hike up to 3 hours; at least 2 miles (3 km) per day.

Moderate : Walk/hike up to 4 hours; at least 3 miles (5 km) per day.

Moderately Challenging : Walk/hike up to 5 hours; at least 4 miles (6 km) per day. Recommended for those looking for a trek.

Challenging : Walk/hike 5 OR MORE hours; at least 5 miles (8 km) per day. Recommended for those looking for a trek.

The majority of their tours are at an activity level of 2 or 3. If you prefer a trip at an activity level 1, then Polar tours and Sea Journey Tours would be right for you.

On the other hand, if you want something even more adventurous than the regular trips, look for trips labelled “Exploratory Trips”. These are designed with active travelers in mind who enjoy exploration and less itinerary structure.

Why Choose a Tour With Eldertreks?

For older travelers seeking a fun group of adventurous like-minded peers, a trip with ElderTreks is ideal. They focus on small group sizes and have a variety of trip types to choose, from easy to challenging. ElderTreks prides itself on offering high caliber journeys at affordable prices.

Eldertreks tours are mostly meant for seniors that are physically active and relatively fit. It should be noted that if participants can’t complete the trip on their own without assistance, the tour leader has the sole right to dismiss you from the trip - to avoid compromising the safety and enjoyment of others in the group.

Also, ElderTreks trips might not be suitable for those who prefer to have ample free time during the tour, -choosing their own meals or accommodations. Since everything is included in the tour price, there isn’t much room for the itinerary to be modified.

About the company.

ElderTreks is the world's first adventure travel company designed exclusively for people 50 and over. Established in 1987, ElderTreks offers active, off-the-beaten-path, small-group adventures by both land and sea in over 100 countries. ElderTreks offers wildlife and tribal African safaris, active hiking trips to the Rockies, Himalayas and Andes, expeditions by icebreakers to the Arctic and Antarctic and cultural journeys throughout Asia, South America and much of the world. We invite you to browse through our website, request a catalogue or give us a call. A real person will always answer during business hours. We hope you can join ElderTreks on one of our small group adventures for travelers 50 plus.

Here are some of great reasons to travel with ElderTreks:

Small group experience: Maximum group size on our land adventures is 16 - guaranteed.

Expedition ships, not cruise ships (Capacity of 8-200 passengers): On our ship-based adventures, we use expedition ships - not cruise ships. Smaller vessels allow for more personal interaction and reduce our impact at the sites we visit.

Experts with first-hand knowledge: When you book a trip with ElderTreks, you have access to people who have been where you are going. You may deal directly with people who are able to answer your questions.

Genuine travel experiences: ElderTreks takes you off the beaten path on carefully crafted itineraries that are unique and thoughtfully planned. We do not support conveyor-belt tourism, where groups are pushed through a rigid itinerary at the expense of spontaneity.

Sustainable, responsible travel: We support a number of development projects throughout the world, and we make sure you have close contact with local people. During some of our adventures, you have the opportunity to visit schools and orphanages.

Comfortable, charming accommodations: We select hotels based on comfort, location and charm with private washrooms. Shared facilities are only used where there is no alternative, and such exceptions are clearly noted.

Great value: Our many repeat travelers tell us that we consistently deliver high caliber journeys at an affordable price. You will find our adventures eventful, stimulating and great value for your money.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
