HIGHEST ALTITUDE

Seeing great mountain views is not easy. You have to get to a high vantage point to catch such a view. In Spring and summer, most such vantage points are rare. This is why at Indiahikes we treasure the Deoriatal Chandrashila trek so much.

The Chandrashila summit is a vantage point that stands unparalleled among our treks. From the top of the summit, you see perhaps the greatest mountain views of our Indian Himalayas. It is like a grand feast — there is so much to take in that you cannot take all of it in. It is an experience many trekkers cannot forget.

heart icon

Many of us at Indiahikes have a soft corner for Deoriatal Chandrashila. Watch this video to know why.

What do you see? From your left are the Gangotri range of peaks, Mt Thalaysagar, the Kedarnath and the Kedar dome. Mandani Parbat and Janhukut. The imposing Chaukhamba is right in front. Most of them are over 7,000 meters tall.

On your right are the Gauri Parbat, Hathi Parbat and Dunagiri. And then right ahead standing against the skyline in India’s tallest mountain, Mt Nanda Devi. Trekkers find it hard to believe that they are seeing Mt Nanda Devi.

If that’s not enough, to Mt Nanda Devi’s right, etched against the skyline are Mt Nanda Ghunti and Mt Trishul. Two of the most beautiful mountain summits in our country.

It is not just the grand views. In Spring, the trek in itself is special. The trail snaking through goes through the canopy of oak and rhododendron trees is almost dream-like. This trek is picture-perfect and you have one of the best rhodo forests which set the mountains ablaze with colours during March, April!

For us, just to catch the sight of Mt Chaukhamba from the shores of the Deoriatal is worth doing the entire trek. The Deoriatal lake glittering with green meadow around. But looming and towering over the lake is Mt Chaukhamba.

Besides Deoriatal, camping at the campsite of Baniya Kund is a delight. The dense forests leading to the campsite are something that we don’t get on other treks. And everything changes with the canopy of white everywhere.

Having said all that, the biggest thrill of the trek has to be the climb from Chopta to the Chandrashila summit. Climbing to the summit is an adventure that people do not forget in a lifetime. We have noticed trekkers breaking down in tears at the summit, such as the feeling of elation and a sense of accomplishment.

Deoriatal Chandrashila would be one of the better ones on our list for any beginners. Do not miss out on this opportunity.

Arjun Majumdar, Founder, CEO

chandrashila trek yhai

Arjun Majumdar, the Founder of Indiahikes, went on this exploratory trek almost a decade ago. He is a veteran of the trekking community in India. He’s an expert when it comes to the trek. Here’s Arjun talking about one of the Best Treks for Summit Views in the country .

Why the Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek surprised me

What I Like About the Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek

Arjun Majumdar, the Founder of Indiahikes, went on this exploratory trek almost a decade ago. He is a veteran of the trekking community in India. He’s an expert when it comes to the trek. Here’s Arjun talking about one of the Best Treks for Summit Views in the country.

1 . My First Unexpected Experience of Chandrashila

Much before we started Indiahikes, I had read a couple of trek journals about the trek. I knew it was a pilgrim trail from Chopta until the Tungnath temple, only a 4 km walk.

I had read people would stay overnight at the Tungnath temple premises. In the early morning, they would go to Chandrashila to catch the sunrise.

In my mind, Chandrashila was a two-kilometre further trek from Tungnath. There were some good views to offer but that was it. And yes, I had heard a lot about the beautiful meadows around Chopta. I didn’t know how this qualified for a trek.

I think my innocent pre-Indiahikes mind didn’t fathom what was written in these journals. Because none of them painted the correct picture of the trek. And none of them talked about the combination of two treks, the Deoriatal and the Chandrashila, and how put together, it creates one of the best treks in our country.

I curse myself and these journals roundly now. I wish I had done this trek earlier, much earlier.

Note : Tungnath temple opens only in summer and closes by Diwali.

2 . A trail blazing with rhododendrons

I timed the trek for spring the first time I did the Deoriatal Chandrashila trek. The moment I stepped on the trek,  I knew I was onto something special.  The Deoriatal Chandrashila here was the Goechala trek of the west. Pink, red and scarlet  Rhododendrons  bloomed in vivid colours all along the trek.

I was a bit stunned at the density of the rhododendrons on the trek.

Near Chopta, at some spots an entire section of the mountainside was red. We ran other great treks in the Himalayas. But none of them came close to the amount of rhodos that I saw on this trek. It was a feast!

3 . Birdlife on the trek

I still have an old video that I was recording at Deoriatal. We have never published that video. Because in that video you cannot hear me at all. My voice is drowned by the chirping of birds. We tried changing locations for that video, but we gave up soon. The birds were everywhere!

Later, after we talked a lot about the birds on this trek, many of our birder trekkers went on this trek. They have only one thing to say about this trek. This is  the  trek to see birds. Click here to view rare pictures of the birds on this trek.

Other treks have birds. But none of them will come close to what you see on the Deoriatal Chandrashila trek. There are at least 30 – 40 varieties to see on this trek.

I am not a birder, but I have done this trek thrice — in all seasons. Every time, I have seen Monals very close to the trail. For me, Monals, the state bird of Uttarakhand, are prettier than the peacock and perhaps even more colourful.

Getting a chance to see Monals would be a good reason for me to do the trek again. I have rarely seen Monals on other treks.

4 . I remember the moment. I had just stepped on the edges of Deoriatal.

And there it was right in front as if rising from the edges of the lake the entire massif of Mt Chaukhamba. I looked around. Everyone’s eyes were fixed on the same sight.  No one could take their eyes off Mt Chaukhamba.

You can ask me to do a lot of treks. But the sight of Mt Chaukhamba from the shores of Deoriatal is something I am not willing to exchange for any other views.

5 . The climb to Chandrashila summit from Tungnath is anything but a walk.

I am not saying it is difficult, but it is a nice thrill to top the summit. It took me a moment to grapple with the sight of the summit.

Right in front of me, at a touching distance, were not one, not two, but  all  the major summits of our Greater Himalayas.

I ticked them off. Jaunli, Mt Jogin, Mt Thalaysagar, Kedarnath and the Kedar Dome, Sumeru, Bhagirathi I , Mandani Parbat, of course Mt Chaukhamba I, II, III and IV. These were 7,000-meter summits!

When I turned my head to the other side, there she was India’s highest mountain — Mt Nanda Devi right in front. Then, to almost add a cherry on top was our eternal favourite Mt Trishul along with Mt Nanda Ghunti. To the left were Gauri Parbat, Hathi Parbat, Dunagiri.

For a long time, I stood transfixed on the spot.

On other treks, I had seen great mountain views. But never so many of them, so close and from such a great vantage point.

chandrashila trek yhai

The climb to Chandrashila summit is a steep one. It is as rewarding as it is challenging. Picture by Prashant Bhat

What I Don't Like About the Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek

1 . The trek had better campsites earlier

When we could camp at Rohini Bugyal and the Deoriatal lake premises. But now, because of government regulations, camping at all our old and great campsites is not allowed.

That’s something I miss about this trek. On the other hand, the new campsite at Syalmi is not bad.

2 . I have mixed feelings about the crowd on the trail

I’ll be honest, I was expecting the crowd of pilgrims moving towards Tungnath to be a bother. But strangely, it felt nice to be the trekker in this motley group. I would often be asked about the distance and how long it would take to get to Tungnath. Those small conversations made that section of the trek a whole lot of fun.

While I don’t like crowds on a trail, here, somehow I was ok with it.

Trek Trivia

Things Nobody Tells You About Deoriatal Chandrashila

  • Birders Alert!
  • Meditation Spot
  • The Tunganath Story
  • The Resurrection

Did you know Deoriatal Chandrashila is one of the best treks for birders?

chandrashila trek yhai

Given that the Deoriatal-Chandrashila trek is in the heart of the Kedarnath Musk Deer Sanctuary, it has a few of the most heavily forested trails. Along with the forests, come a plethora of birds!

Most of our birders choose this trail to catch sight of a few rare birds -- including the gorgeous Himalayan Monal! The section from Chopta to Chandrashila is especially well-known for monal sightings.

Watch the video here, where we interview expert bird photographer, Ajit Hota, who shares tips on when and where to spot these birds!

Lord Rama’s Meditation on the peak

An interesting myth is the story of Lord Rama meditating on top of the Chandrashila peak.

After defeating Ravana in the battle of Lanka, Lord Rama was finding a way to atone for his sins. It is believed that he decided to meditate on the Chandrashila peak.

This was Lord Rama’s way of engaging in severe penance after the Ramayana.

Origin of the Tunganath temple

Another fascinating legend is that of the Tunganath temple, the highest Shiva temple in the world.

After the Mahabharata war, Lord Shiva was upset with the Pandavas for their gruesome killing. The Pandavas found a way to please, venerate and celebrate Lord Shiva; they built the blissful Tunganath temple.

The Pandavas were thus freed from their sins.

Story of the Deoriatal Lake

Anyone on the Deoriatal Chandrashila trek would notice the captivating Deoriatal Lake which has a unique story of its own.

As the legend goes, four brothers of the Pandava clan once visited the pristine lake during their exile. The lake was then a bathing spot for gods,  guarded by a crane - Yaksha. Despite Yaksha’s warnings, the brothers decided to sip water. As a consequence, Yaksha punished them, leading to their immediate death.

The locals believe that it is beside this lake that the famous question-and-answer dialogue between Yudishtira and a Yaksha in the mountains ensued -- also known as Yaksha Prashana.

The legend goes that: One day, towards the end of their 12-year exile, the Pandavas were in search of a runaway deer in the forests. During their search, the oldest brother of them all, Yudishtira was overcome by thirst. His youngest brother set out looking for water. He chanced upon a lovely lake. Here, a crane that was sitting close by, warned Nakula, saying the water would turn into poison if he drank it without answering some questions he had.

Ignoring the crane, Nakula drank water from the lake. He immediately died. Three of his brothers, Sahadeva, Bhima and Arjuna followed the same fate -- all of them drinking water without paying heed to the crane's words.

When Yudishtira finally approached the lake, he was distraught seeing that his brothers had passed. The crane warned him too about the poisonous water. When he paused to talk to the crane, it revealed itself to be a Yaksha (a celestial demon). The Yaksha offered to bring one of the Pandavas back to life if Yudishtira could answer all his questions.

What ensued was an epic dialogue of over 125 questions about life, dharma, philosophy and more.

Impressed by Yudishtira's answers, the Yaksha finally revealed himself to be Yama Dharma, Yudishtira's own father! He brought back not only one Pandava to life but all of them.

The locals believe that this whole episode occurred on the soil of Deoriatal (or Devariyatal), which when translated, becomes "the lake of the gods."

5 Reasons Why Indiahikes

chandrashila trek yhai

When we brought out new trails in Indian trekking, safety came with us. Back in 2012, we were the first to introduce microspikes, and two years later, pulse oximeters became standard thanks to us. Nobody does safe treks like Indiahikes. In the mountains, emergencies don't care who you're with – everyone knows that when trouble hits, you look for the yellow tents of Indiahikes.

chandrashila trek yhai

We are pioneers in trekking. Since 2007, we have brought out treks that have become India's most famous treks: Roopkund, Rupin Pass, Buran Ghati, Kedarkantha, Kashmir Great Lakes, Tarsar Marsar, Brahmatal, Phulara Ridge—the list goes on. In 2023 alone, we brought out five new treks in Indian trekking. We know treks better than anyone . This comes directly from the reason why Indiahikes was born: to bring out trek information and enable trekkers to trek on their own.

chandrashila trek yhai

More than 25,000 people trek with us every year. We are the largest trekking organisation in India. 24% of our trekkers come back to trek with us every year. Over 4,000 students from the top educational institutions trek with us every year. Aside from this, families with children choose to trek with Indiahikes knowing that our treks are the safest. We have taken over 8000 children trekking so far, and the number continues to grow.

chandrashila trek yhai

We focus on designing transformative experiences. Our trek leaders conduct thought-provoking exercises that help you reflect and contemplate. This impact stays with you for a long time. Trekkers return feeling energised, more confident, or developing abilities to deal with difficulties. Many have changed careers, rethought their core values, become more humble, shown gratitude to others, or started a new fitness journey.

chandrashila trek yhai

Since 2012, we have pioneered sustainable practices that have become standard in trekking. Using eco-bags, our trekkers have cleared over 120 tonnes of litter from the mountains. We do not carry packaged foods; instead, we serve freshly made food. We do not light campfires; we carry coal to light angethis to keep you warm. Why Trek to Chandrashila?

Chandrashila is proudly seated at an elevation of 4,000 meters about 13,000 feet above sea level. Many travelers like to commence the exhilarating Chandrashila trek that can be completed by a short gradient of 1.5 km from Tungnath. However, the base camp for the Chandrashila trek is Chopta . Chandrashila is one of the popular treks of Uttarakhand that can be undertaken throughout the year. But sometimes during winters, the trek route remains hidden under the sheath of snow.

Owing to its relative easiness and accessibility, the Chandrashilla summit trek is one of the most frequented treks of Uttarakhand. It offers a mesmerizing 360-degree view of the majestic Himalayan peaks like Kedarnath Dome , Chaukhamba, Trishul, and Nanda Devi. This trek opens up to the verdant meadows, one can absorb the scent of the deodar trees and pay obeisance at the holy Tungnath shrine .

The Chandrashila trek route is a blessing for the weary souls who are in search of peace and tranquillity. This beautiful trek takes one through verdant meadows, deodar forests and the majestic Tungnath shrine. You can also enrapture in spirituality here by visiting the Chandrashila temple, where Lakshman, the younger brother of Lord Rama meditated.

Chandrashila – A Complete Travel Guide

Magnificent valley View At Deoria Tal

The adrenaline rush on climbing the misty trails, understanding the legends behind the mountain peaks, trekking endlessly and finally getting the view of the majestic Himalayas. Trekking in Uttarakhand is one of the most memorable experiences for many such reasons.Chandrashila trek via Chopta and Tungnath is among such treks which managed to leave me breathless. Both, literally and figuratively.

The mountains got its name from the literal translation of the term “ Moon Rock “. As per their legends, Chandra (the Moon God)  had spent some time at these mountain peaks in penance, after which it got its name.

Located at an approximate altitude of 13,000 feet above sea level, Chandrashila gives a crystal clear view of peaks including the Nandadevi, Kedar, and Chaukhamba.

It is perched right in the heart of Uttarakhand . When I looked around me I could see I was surrounded by beautiful villages and cities afar. From that height, I could watch the melting snow and lakes make their way through cracks and creases and pass through miniature like hamlets. The heart analogy added along with this view made me picturise the flowing waters as a network of veins reviving the villages around it.

Table of Contents

What to know before trekking

I had travelled solo, so I had to climb with the extra luggage of trekking gears. Without the gear attempting to climb the mountains would be dangerous as well as quite tiring.

So make sure you have your trekking pole in hand and shoes with a comfortable grip.

This is also where taking along an experienced guide would be highly recommended! Especially if you are a beginner in trekking.

They would enlighten you on the technicalities regarding the trek including the required fitness, flat-footed techniques, consultation on medicinal intakes and so on would be described in detail before you ascend the peak.

Without appropriate information, before you could even make it halfway through, you’d already been making 10 stops on your way.

Make sure to wear light clothes which can dry quickly. Track pants would be more comfortable for ascending the peak and try avoiding jeans or other bodycon clothes. Keep a handy raincoat as well in case of unexpected rainfall.

Mountains are a little too unpredictable and knowing the right weather and the nature of it is essential before you start going to the top.

There aren’t many shops or stalls around the peak, so make sure you carry a sufficient amount of water along with you. It’s quite important that you keep yourself hydrated.

How to reach

Chandrashila is a common trekking spot and the number of people who flock here every other day to experience the Himalayan glory is beyond astounding.

Sari village is the base point for the trek and is easily accessible through Haridwar . There are almost all modes of transportation available to this camp.

The nearest rail line is at Haridwar, from where a cab or bus service can be availed to Sari village. It is roughly a 7-hour drive away from Haridwar, after which Chopta lies at a distance of about 56 kilometres.

In terms of air travel, Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is the nearest airport at a distance of 180 kilometres from Chopta.

The route map would follow a trail from Haridwar to the base camp Sari, to the Deoria Tal. 60 kilometres from here lies Chopta from where the trek would go in the form of a loop to Tungnath- Chandrashila and back to Chopta.

Alternatively from Sari village, the Kund camp is also taken as a starting point but it’s not so common.

When to visit

Now, this is yet another feature of Chandrashila that makes it one among the best trekking spots.

It is a year-round trek, open during all seasons. The most popular ones are autumn and winter treks.

Winter treks are comparatively harder to climb because of the rise in snowfall levels. Climbing through the slushy snow, even though a tedious task, sure is thrilling and exciting.

During monsoon not only does the trail transform from a moderate to difficult climb, but there are also risks involved around the route to Chandrashila as well.

If you’re trekking via Chopta, you might have to take extra precautions as they have often experienced landslides and other havocs.

This doesn’t pose much of a problem to a typical adventure enthusiast who’d take up the risk of trekking through all the downpours. Very understandably so as well, the view of the mountain ranges with the rain falling like silver threads is sure worth every trouble was taken to reach on top.

Apart from the climatic concerns, the usual duration of the trek lasts for around 4-5 days

The Four-day exploration

The uneven terrains covered in coniferous trees leading to the summit is a 4-day enchanting tale.

Haridwar to Sari (Altitude – 6,600 feet)

The stay kept changing occasionally and a proper stay per se was at Haridwar, from where I had to leave for Sari by early morning. The base camp is situated in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand and is approximately a 7-hour drive away from Haridwar without much interruptions and halts.

Here there’s an array of campsites, homestays and houses for accommodating the trekkers.

I had reached by around 6 in the evening and had to take a break for the day to start for the Deoria Tal trek the next day.

Sari is a perfect overnight camping spot. There wouldn’t be even one dull minute around here with the bonfire and musical night with other campers.

Deoria Tal Trek (Altitude: 7850 feet)

This was among the best parts of the trek.

Even though the Lake was barely 2 kilometres from Sari, the trail is quite uneven and with an elevation of around 1300 feet, it took more than 40 minutes for me to complete it.

This was also mostly because I chose to halt at the maple forests and the Hawa Ghar amidst it. The localites have transformed bits of the land for the purpose of farming as well. They are a bunch of really kind people and offered warm brewing tea to the trekkers.

Walking through the dense expanse of greenery, exiting it towards the emerald lakes was like having found a piece of priceless treasure after ages. Here camping facilities are arranged on prior notice. Other than that they also provide sites for those who wish to pitch their own tents.

An overnight stay in the camps, facing the night light reflections in the beautiful lake is a ritual for those who come trekking to Chandrashila.

Off to Chopta (Altitude: 8800 feet)

Packing off from the Deoria Tal camp, the next destination was Chopta. This is when the trek gets moderately challenging. The elevation is heightened and without proper gear, I would’ve struggled ten times more to trek.

The pathway can get a bit confusing as it involves walking past the vast forest and there aren’t many people we could spot on the way.

More or less, it’s like a Hansel and Gretel walk through if you have no idea of the route.

Reaching Chopta would take around 8-10 hours depending on how often you stop at pit-stops.

A lot of water points can be found en route, make sure to fill up your bottles before taking off from here. Few of the stops include the ones before Akash Kamini waterfalls and Rohini Bugyal.

If you’re assisted by a trekking guide, they’d direct and halt exactly at these points for refreshing.

There is also a Forest guest lodge on the way where you can choose to relax for a while before continuing the trek.

The ridges are among the best spots to view the sunset. By the time the sun was slowly bidding away, I was almost drained out. The view along with the Himalayan birds chirping away was a sight to the sore eyes.

Trekking trails beginning from Sari follow a pathway between the humble settlements of the Garhwali people. Not long before I reached Chopta, there were small huts made completely out of scratch. I was told that these were the mountain shepherd’s abode.

Reaching Chopta later in the evening, I pitched my tent and wrapped up for the night.

Circuit trek (12100 feet)

I was prepping to leave behind the snow-dusted mountains of Chopta on Day 4. Going in the form of a circuit was the trek from Chopta to Tunganath-Chandrashila and back to Chopta.

This is the main trek and the ascent is a steeper climb. Reaching the peak takes beyond 5 hours and on the way, you’d pass the infamous Tungnath temple.

At an elevation of 12000 feet, the temple is said to be the highest Shiva temple in the world. The vibe radiating from this temple is unmissable. On the entrance there are bells clanging against the wind, colourful buntings fluttering, and the welcoming idol of Nandi before the shrine. Hold the pause button to the trek here, and not only will you get to relax but it’s a great meditational experience.

The brick structure is barely 2 km from the Chandrashila peak. The Upper base is a 45-minute trek from the temple. I wish I could’ve captured an image of the misty trail, but I was beyond mesmerised to have even expressed how I felt about being there at the very moment. Along with this was the cold breeze hitting my face and complete silence other than the sounds of the boot crushing the snow with every step.

On reaching the peak, starts the dilemma of not wanting to go back. The 360-degree view of the entire valley below the high mountain passes, it’s a view you’d wish to see every single day.

This is one of the challenging and exciting treks you could go for, and definitely a rite of passage to the adventure enthusiast within you!

Chandrashila Trek Itinerary

A little hut en route Tungnath Chandrashila trek

There are 2-3 suggested routes for Chandrashila Treks. The itineraries are suggested depending upon the facilities and stay preferred. Kund Camp and Sari Village both act as starting points for different routes. Also, one must understand that the route doesn’t follow an order, so don’t get confused with the route on the map. In case you aren’t good with maps then you don’t need to worry much. Either go ahead with the route suggested by your tour operator or fellow trekkers or pick the best one that I have to suggest. Taking a closer look at the trail and nature views in both routes, I suggest you take the Sari to Chandrashila route.

Day 1 – Reaching Sari from Haridwar

Sari acts as the picturesque base camp for the great trek to Chandrashila. The base camp, located in Rudraprayag district, is almost an 8-hour drive from Haridwar. Campsites, homestays, and guest houses are available for trekkers.

Sari is mostly used for an overnight halt before setting off for Deoria Tal the next day. The lofted landmass of the village and imposing mountains around are a magnificent spectacle. Keep soaking in the best.

Halfway into the route while traversing the maple forest, you come across a Hawa Ghar constructed by the forest department for the convenience of fellow trekkers. The emerald lake at 8000 feet is a beauty nestled in gigantic peaks.

During the trek, you see stretches of beautiful farmlands, ancient temples, and a few village houses. And upon reaching Deoria Tal, you find exceptional viewpoints to soothe your eyes. Overnight stay is planned in tents at the campsite near the lake.

Altitude: 7850 feet

Day 3 – Deoria Tal To Chopta

Bid adieu to Mount Chaukhamba looming into the pristine Deoria Tal Lake as you start trekking on the third day. This is the big day of Tungnath Chandrashila Trek when you further attain an elevation of 1000 feet. Further, you have to negotiate treacherous pathways cutting through the dense forest and jagged alleys. The 14 km distance from Deoria Tal to Chopta takes close to 9 hours.

The trek begins with a steady ascent followed by a rapid descent. There are 2-3 water points en route, which you find right before Rohini Bugyal, Akash Kamini Waterfall, and Bhrujgali. The trail continues leaving Forest Guest Lodge and maple trees behind.

Walking across the forest ridges and Rohini Bugyal, you find spectacular views with Himalayan birds chirping all around. Bugyal region is also known for its spectacular sunsets. Following the trail, you find tiny huts of shepherds along the mountains.

Pretty as they appear, you can stop by to interact with the locals and rejuvenate for the onward journey. After walking the entire day, you come finally reach Chopta around 5 pm in the evening. A wonderful campsite awaits you at Chopta. Don’t forget to indulge in amazing things to do in Chopta before heading forward!

  • Chandrashila offers splendid views of the majestic Himalayan peaks including Kedar Dome, Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi, Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, Kamet, Gangotri Ranges & more.

What is the history and heritage of the Trek?

  • The trek is very popular for the 1000 year old temple in Tungnath which is the highest shrine of lord Shiva
  • It is believed that Devas (Gods) bathed in this lake and hence the name Deoriatal
  • Some say that was the place from where the mighty Pandavas of the Epic Mahabharata were asked queries by Yaksha
  • The lake is also believed to be the “Indra Sarovar” referred to in the puranas by wandering Sadhus, elf.
  • Chandrashila is one of the few treks that can also be climbed  in the winter months

The Bum Who Travels

A Detailed Travel Guide for Chopta, Tungnath, Chandrashila Trek

While the internet is awash with travel blogs about popular trekking destinations, a careful perusal results in finding out that most of them are similar and may sometimes not have proper information. And I noticed the same for Chopta – Tungnath – Chandrashila trek.

After the many thankful emails and comments that I have received after the trekking guide to Kheerganga ,  I make this travel guide to Chopta, Tungnath and Chandrashila based on my recent trek in April 2017. The very nature of this beautiful and easy trek, distance and connectivity of Chopta make this an ideal weekend getaway from Delhi and can even be completed as a 3 day trip.

Updated in April 2018.

____________________________________________________________________________________________

Chopta is a small tourist town located at 2600m and is also the last road head for the trek to Tungnath Temple & Chandrashila peak. The distances and nature of the trek make it a popular weekend holiday from Delhi and other parts of North India and hence this guide is an attempt to make it as easy as possible for prospective travellers.

How to reach Chopta?

Chopta is located in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand   and lies on the Ukhimath – Chamoli – Gopeshwar road. Distance of Chopta from Haridwar is 225 kms and the distance from Ukhimath to Chopta is around 29 kms . To simplify the reaching part, let me start from Delhi. Chopta is located at an altitude of approx. 2650m.

DSC_0699

Distance from Delhi to Haridwar  is 225 kms and has regular buses from ISBT Kashmere Gate & Anand Vihar ISBT. Time taken to cover the distance is usually 5-6 hours. There are three kinds of buses from Delhi to Haridwar; normal buses, Janrath buses (AC) and Volvo buses (AC). It is recommended to take a 10 pm or 10:30 pm bus so that you reach Haridwar bus stand at around 4 am in the morning.

Haridwar to Chopta : If you reach Haridwar at 4 or 5 in the morning, there may be quite a confusion with regards to buses for Kund at the bus stand. In the absence of a proper information channel, no one will deny about the availability of a bus, nor will anyone tell you where and how it goes from.

Based on my experience, a humble suggestion  – Do not waste time wandering here and there at the Haridwar bus stand. The earliest buses on the route to Chopta leave from GMOU bus stand (pronounced geemu), which is a 500m walk away from main Haridwar bus stand on the left side once you exit the gates. GMOU stands for Garhwal Mandal (Bus) Operators’ Association. GMOU bus stand is on the opposite side of the Railway Godown.

FullSizeRender_2

Kund is the point at which the road bifurcates – A left from here goes to Guptkashi and Gaurikund (Kedarnath route) and the straight road goes to Ukhimath, from where Chopta is around 29 kms away. Hence I recommend reaching Kund in order to get to Chopta.

There will be no direct buses for Kund or Ukhimath. So basically one needs to get into one of the below GMOU buses :

03:15 am – Joshimath (Get down at Rudraprayag) and change buses                                                                      05:00 am – Badrinath (Get down at Rudraprayag) and change buses                                                                  05:15 am – Gaurikund or Kedarnath (Get down at Kund) shared sumo                                                    07:45 am & 08:00 am – Joshimath & Badrinath (Rudraprayag) and change buses

Route from Haridwar to Chopta

Haridwar – (24kms) Rishikesh – (70kms) Devprayag – (34kms) Srinagar – (33kms) Rudraprayag – (19kms) Agastyamuni – (10kms) Kund – (6kms) Ukhimath – (22kms) Duggalbitta – (7kms) Chopta.

Breakfast place in the bus is at a dhaba at 3 Dhara near Devprayag . Make sure to eat ample aloo paranthas, so that you can have food directly at Chopta after this. The distance from Haridwar to Kund is covered in the bus (300 Rs.) in approximately 7 hours. Once you reach Kund at around 12:30 pm, shared cabs (sumo) are available for Ukhimath (20 Rs.) and thereafter from Ukhimath to Chopta (50 Rs.) Depending on the luck with shared transport one should reach Chopta at 2 or 3 pm. Chopta is located on the Ukhimath to Gopeshwar route; Mandal village is around 24 kms from Chopta and is very scenic.

Once you are near Duggalbitta, accommodation options in the form of camps, tents and small homestays start appearing. If you are coming by public transport, the best idea is to get down right at Chopta (where there are trek stairs to Tungnath temple.) During summer season, Ukhimath to Gopeshwar buses ply on this road and it is possible to reach Chopta by bus as well. (According to locals buses run twice a day.) Shared taxis from Ukhimath to Chopta are many and run from morning till at least 5 in the evening.

Planning the trek

It is most likely that one will reach Chopta by 2 to 3 pm (if the transport connection to and from Ukhimath works fine). Time taken to trek to Tungnath Temple from Chopta is usually 3 hours for an average person, and another one hour for Tungnath to Chandrashila. It can be classified as a fairly easy trek – on the difficulty level and can be ideal for a first time trekker.

Most people stay at Chopta, do a day hike to Tungnath and Chandrashila and come back the same day. It is possible to do it provided one leaves early, say by 7 am. It is best to reach Tungnath by 10, pay your respects at the temple and enjoy the scenery. Trek ahead to Chandrashila, come back by 1 pm. Eat lunch either near Tungnath temple or at the dhabas on the trail and start the walk back to Chopta. Remember that usually the time taken to go back is half of what you’d take while hiking up, so one can get back to Chopta in 2 hours from Chandrashila.

Where to Stay in Chopta?

There are many simple guest houses and homestays to stay at Chopta, ranging from as little as 100/- per person to 500 Rupees for a four bed room with attached bathroom. While some are also named ‘hotels’, don’t expect any standard of luxury. Duggalbitta is around 5 kms before Chopta and there are also a few nicely located camping resorts on the side of the road (approx. 1500 Rs. per tent). The dhaba owners on the road also offer dormitory type services by charging approx. 100 per bed when tourists start filling in on weekends.

DSC_0837

One can also stay in tents near Chopta, just before the Tungnath temple starting trek point. Tents are laid out in green meadows and it can be a good idea to stay if one wants the camping experience. Depending on the season, weekend crowds and weather – it is easy to find accommodation in Chopta and nearby even if you haven’t booked in advance.

In the worst case scenario of accommodation here being full at Chopta, one can move 3 kms ahead on the Gopeshwar route for more staying options. There are 4-5 guest houses that have come up in an area called Bhulkan (It is on the road to Mandal.) I highly recommend this region to stay in peace away from the crowds. Try to reach as early as possible to make sure about finding a place to stay. If you have your own tent, you can pitch it in a safe place after asking the locals and paying them a fee.

DSC_0764

Best Timing for Views  : With regards to the best views on the Tungnath – Chandrashila trek, it is possible that after reaching Chopta by around 3 in the afternoon, you start trekking towards Tungnath. Within 45 minutes, the path reaches a lush green meadow flanked by a ring of snowy peaks with 3-4 stone dhabas. One can expect bare and basic accommodation at these dhabas for around 100-150 Rs. per person.

Scenario No. 2 : The extremely fit trekkers can reach Tungnath, where there are simple staying options in the form of rustic guest houses. The sunrise views from Chandrashila Top are known to be legendary. Staying at Tungnath can enable a person to reach Chandrashila Top before sunrise; otherwise it can become a tricky situation to start the trek from Chopta and expect to reach Chandrashila for sunrise!

Enroute : There are staying options in Ukhimath, Kund, Srinagar & Rudraprayag as well. I stayed in a cheap but nice hotel in Ukhimath that charged 500 Rupees.

If you are staying in Ukhimath, remember that Omkareshwar Temple is the winter home of Kedarnath Temple and also Madhyamaheshwar Temple. In simpler words, the deities of the temples are shifted to Ukhimath for the winter months. It is a colourful temple and is highly recommended to pay your respects if you are here.

Trekking from Chopta to Tungnath

The trekking path to Chopta begins right on the road and is surrounded by many dhabas and guest houses. The trekking trail is well marked and is properly paved till Tungnath. Trees welcome the visitor as soon as the trek begins, and an endless array of snow capped peaks can be seen on the left side. The entire trek from Chopta to Tungnath and to Chandrashila is fairly easy and does not require the services of a guide.

Gorgeous meadows appear around 45 minutes after the start of the trek and may make the best camping spot on the entire trail. There are 3-4 dhabas here that provide tea, coffee, food and packaged eatables. The dhabas also double up as basic shelters in the night. These dhabas may also prove useful in case of an emergency or accident when somehow needs help.

DSC_0731

The trail zigzags around this point and steadily climbs up gaining altitude. There are a few places where one can sit and enjoy the views of the snowy peaks on the trail. Lucky ones can also sight the state bird of Uttarakhand, colourful Monal  – on the slopes near Tungnath Temple.

The tree cover gives way as you climb over 3100m, around halfway on the way to Tungnath and it can get quite hot with the sun shining brightly. Make sure to have ample water with you for the trek. Especially for beginners, remember it is not a race and that everyone has their own pace, so just take it slow and steady, and enjoy the scenery on the trek.

The trekking distance between Chopta to Tungnath is 4 kms and usually takes around 2 and a half hours to cover.

DSC_0748

Tungnath is the highest Shiva Temple in the world located at an altitude of 3680m and is one among the Panch Kedar Shrines. It is believed to be more than 1000 years old. The temple is closed during the winters and the deity is shifted to Mukku village. Tungnath temple opens its doors to pilgrims in the summer around the end of April and shuts down in November in winter.

Around ten minutes before you reach Tungnath, there is a small detour to a peak called Ravanshila . It is the place where the demon king Ravana meditated to please Lord Shiva. There are panoramic valley views from Ravanshila. If you are unsure about the location of Ravanshila, it is best to ask the locals or dhabawallahs near the temple.

Trekking from Tungnath Temple to Chandrashila

The path to Chandrashila starts from Tungnath temple itself. It is clearly marked and cannot be missed. Distance of Chandrashila Peak Top from Tungnath is approx. 1.5 kms and even though its a steep climb, the distance can be easily covered in 1 hour. There is a small temple at Chandrashila and from the top one can savour grand 360 degree panoramic views of the Kumaon & Garhwal ranges.

DSC_0753

Behind the temple there is an endless valley view enhanced by snowy peaks. One can savour the sights for some time and listen to the wind that blows furiously here, with the sound of the bells it makes for a divine experience. Remember that the altitude of Chandrashila is 4000m and that one may feel effects of AMS (Altitude Mountain Sickness). Keep water handy and in case of any discomfort, slowly trek back to Tungnath and have a black tea.

Views of the peaks are generally clear till noon and after that the snowy mountains may be obscured by clouds. Hence it is recommended to reach Chandrashila as early as possible for a clear view of the peaks of both Kumaon and Garhwal ranges. Names of the peaks that can be seen from Chandrashila Top are  Nanda Devi , Trishul, Chaukhamba, Nandaghunti, Thalaysagar, Dunagiri, Kamet, Kedar dome and a few more.

There are cairns made with rocks that are spread on Chandrashila Top and also shivlings as well. It makes for a nice environment for being in a meditative frame of mind.

Sunrise at Chandrashila

It is highly recommended that one reach Chandrashila just in time for sunrise which is a spectacular affair. The horizon is painted in shades of yellow and orange as the sun rises from behind the snowy peaks of Kumaon & Garhwal. For this one has to start the trek from Tungnath temple at around 4 am, in absolute darkness. It is essential to be well equipped with flashlights and cold gear if you are planning to do the same; Chandrashila Top at 4000m is bound to be cold at that hour. Needless to say, sure footedness is advised, even more so when its dark.

DSC_0817

According to a mythological legend, Chandrashila is the place where Lord Rama performed penance after killing Ravana.

Trekking back to Tungnath & Chopta

The downhill journey will be surprisingly easy as the time taken will be roughly around half the time taken to ascend. So one can come down from Chandrashila to Tungnath in hardly 20 minutes. If there is no hurry, then a leisurely walk back across the meadows from Tungnath to Chopta will take around an hour and a half.

DSC_0775

Option of Sari – Deoriatal (Devariyatal)

While coming from Ukhimath, there is a cut off for Sari village. Distance from Ukhimath to Sari village is 13 kms. The road to Sari bifurcates at a place ‘Hanumant Inn Resorts’; the straight road continues to Chopta and a left from here will bring you to the pretty Sari village. Sari village from left turn off point at Hanumant Inn resorts is only 3 kms. One can walk this distance; or wait for a shared taxi ride or a hitched ride on a bike. Locals of Sari village are really helpful and  stop for everyone even if they are on a bike.

Sari village

From Sari village, there’s an easy 2.5 km trek to Deoriatal (2300m) that takes around 1 and a half hour. The trek path passes through the lovely village of Sari that has some charming old houses. It is a well marked trail and there is no possibility of losing your way. There are 4 dhabas at regular intervals on the steep trail and even though the distance from Sari village to Deoriatal lake is not much; it does take time due to the sharp ascent. Recommended to carry ample water otherwise you may need to buy from the dhabas. One can spot Tungnath temple and Chandrashila peak from the trail to Deoriatal just before reaching the third dhaba before the lake. Ask the dhabawallas to show the temple to you!

Sari Deoriatal

Deoriatal is a small lake amidst green meadows (Tal means lake). The main charm of this place is the reflections of the snowy peaks during sunrise. Accommodation in the form of Tents and Camps is available quite close to Deoriatal lake, charging around 600-800 per person including food. For budget travellers, there are a few dhabas near Deoriatal which also double up as basic sleeping spaces in the night (charge 100-200 per bed). I also spotted a pretty Forest Rest House on the other side of the lake but am not sure how can one book it. Would surely make for a great place to enjoy the sunset in solitude, near Deoriatal lake.

Deoriatal

Where to stay in Sari?

Sari has to rank as one of the prettiest villages that I’ve ever seen in Uttarakhand and there are numerous guest-houses, homestays and even hotels to stay. Most of the locals are involved in the tourism business; either by working as guides, or trekking operators for big agencies, or providing camping services in Deoriatal, or running a guest house and restaurant. Despite every second structure being a homestay, Sari does not feel like a commercialised village and the sight of rustic houses surrounded by gorgeous green fields will stay with you forever.

Most of these basic stays charge in the range of 400 to 800 per night for a room, including attached bathroom with a geyser. The homely restaurants serve delicious food in Sari. Remember to ask them for a thali instead of ordering a-la-carte. We ate at a place called Himanshu Guest House (hope I remember correctly) and he made a really excellent  chaunsa  dish; and charged us only 60 Rs. per person including chapati and rice.

DSC_0827

  • From Deoriatal, one can also directly trek to Chopta. The path involves crossing Rohini Bugyal (Bugyal means meadow). A guide is recommended for this part, because the trail may not be well marked. This trek from Deoriatal to Chopta, through Rohini Bugyal should take around 6 hours in total.
  • Stay in Deoriatal, trek back to Sari village in the morning and then go to Chopta by shared sumo or public transport. Distance of Chopta from Sari is 18 kms. Once you are in Chopta, the same path as mentioned earlier.

If you are descending from Sari and are looking to reach Ukhimath; them a shortcut is to take the walking trail through Sari village that leads you to the main road near Mastura village. This walking path is 1 km of sharp descent but covers a distance of more than 8 kms if one were to go by road. This route is recommended for those who have no means of transport and are looking to reach Ukhimath. Shared taxis keep plying from Sari to Ukhimath the entire day at intervals.

The Legend of the Sites of Paanch Kedar

Shiva had taken the form of a bull when he went into the ground to escape the Pandavas. Kedarnath temple is dedicated to the hump of Lord Shiva and is the most famous Paanch Kedar Shrine. The other Paanch Kedar sites are; Tungnath, Madyamaheshwar, Rudranath, and Kalpeshwar. At Tungnath temple, Lord Shiva’s arms are worshipped.

Best time to go to Chopta and trek to Tungnath & Chandrashila is during the month of March/April/early May for seeing rhododendron blossoms. The entire landscape is bathed in a sea of pink flowers! The monsoon months from June to August are also said to be good for this trek, keeping in mind the weather forecast and conditions. September to November are supposed to be the best months to trek to Tungnath & Chandrashila for the clear views of the Himalayan mountain ranges. Views of the snowy peaks are clear during this time.

During winters, the road to Chopta may be closed due to snow near Duggalbitta itself and you may need to trek to reach Chopta. Hiring a guide is recommended if one is planning a snow trek to Chopta and Tungnath. Trekking to Chandrashila can be quite difficult in the winter months and is not recommended unless you are an experienced trekker. Better safe than sorry.

During rhododendron flowering season, it is recommended to buy rhododendron juice at any shop in Chopta/Ukhimath. There is no electricity in Chopta, but almost all guest houses have solar powered lights and even phones can be charged with the same. There are a number of shortcuts on the entire trek and one can take some of them on the way back from Tungnath to Chopta.

Stunning views on the Deoriatal – Chopta – Tungnath – Chandrashila trek include unparalleled sights of the Chaukhambha massif with views of Neelkanth and other peaks.

It can get quite cold in Chopta, Tungnath and Chandrashila and the temperature can go down to less than 10 degrees celsius even in summers, therefore carrying heavy woollens is advised all through the year. Keep a comfortable headgear to stay warm from the cold winds that blow on the trek. Phone networks are not reliable on the entire stretch from Chopta to Tungnath to Chandrashila. Airtel had zero tower in Chopta while Vodafone had 1 dot and no internet. BSNL was being used by locals who said that the internet works fine on it in Chopta. It is better to make your important phone calls from Ukhimath itself.

Drinking water is available in plenty in Chopta as pipelines have been laid down by the government. There are no menus in the dhabas and eateries of Chopta and it is better to ask the prices of food before ordering to avoid an unpleasant situation. Remember to keep a lot of water with you on the trek and not empty it before you reach Tungnath. It is recommended to carry some candies with you, they help the throat to not get dry on uphill climbs. The dhaba guys near the start of the trek in Chopta have started charging insane amounts of money for breakfast (update : March 2018) and hence it is better to go to a restaurant which is reasonable.

There are 3-4 general stores in Chopta. It is recommended to carry a power bank to recharge your electronic devices. ATM’s on the route are available in Rudraprayag, Srinagar and Ukhimath, but it is advised to keep required cash with you. Try to carry as less weight as possible with you in the backpack, and leave the excess stuff at Chopta or the Guesthouse you are staying at.

Basic idea of the costs from Delhi  (per person) : Janrath AC tickets from Delhi to Haridwar & back  – Rs. 800/-. GMOU Bus from Haridwar to Ukhimath & back – Rs. 600/-. Shared taxis Ukhimath to Sari/Chopta and back – Rs. 200/-. Stay at Sari/Chopta/Tungnath/Ukhimath – Rs. 250 per person per day. Food : 300 Rupees per person per day.

So for a 3 day trip, the expenses can be roughly worked out to around 2500-3500 Rupees per person.

Please ensure that as responsible travellers and trekkers you don’t litter the place, and try to keep it as clean as possible.

Bus connections to come back from Chopta to Ukhimath and then back to Haridwar/Rishikesh

There is a solitary bus everyday from Gopeshwar to Ukhimath that goes through Chopta; its time of crossing Chopta is 2 pm. According to the locals, this bus service is erratic and it is better to go to Ukhimath by shared sumo. Shared taxis run all day from Chopta to Ukhimath and cost around 50 Rupees.

DSC_0869

From Ukhimath to Haridwar, the earliest bus is a GMOU service which leaves at 05:30 am and reaches Rishikesh at around 11:30 am and Haridwar at 12:30 pm. Most buses to Haridwar/Rishikesh/Dehradun leave from Ukhimath in the morning hours. The locals told me that the last bus for Haridwar is at around 1 or 2 in the afternoon.

The Chopta-Tungnath-Chandrashila Trek via Deoria Tal: Stories of Rudraprayag by Ipsita Paul

' src=

“Rudraprayag is generally entangled with the iconic confluence (Sangam) of river Alakananda and Mandakini forming one of the birthplaces of the Ganges (another being Devprayag). Yet Rudraprayag, like most treasures in Uttarakhand , can give you an acute direction through its compass towards an exemplary expedition. In Rudraprayag, I have had an amalgam of experiences, the qualitative aspects of which I am not ready to evaluate, mostly because they are too sensitive (not in an emotional sense) to land on the concrete. So I am leaving them the way they should be, undiscovered yet explored”.

The Local Bus Ride from Srinagar Chandrashila Trek Keeping my 70-litre backpack in Toliyon Village and exploring cities and villages with the company of my beloved waistband has taught me one thing – my necessity can be minimized to a waistband. It’s light, it’s handy, it’s hitchhike-friendly, especially since I love to explore a city on foot. Coming down from Toliyon took quite some time, so I decided to take the local bus from Srinagar to Rudraprayag (Rs. 60). Passing side by side with Dhari Devi Temple and the mud-coloured river, the sudden change in the surroundings struck me as a ruined picture. After the landslide and rockfall zone, the landscape drastically changes to naked mountains and dry structures with less and less trees. The mountains change their aura. Maybe they are twinning with the still water. The moment I landed on Rudraprayag I saw a monkey stealing a bunch of bananas from a local shop. Monkeys are everywhere in Rudraprayag. On the roof, on the wires, even in the gutters.

Related Post: 7 Top Hill Stations in India You Should Visit During Summer Koteshwar Mahadev Bathing Ghat Chandrashila Trek A one-hour walk away (3 km) from the town of Rudraprayag is a tiny town Koteshwar, mostly famous for the crowd leading to Koteshwar Mahadev Temple and the adjoining Koteshwar Mahadev Bathing Ghat. The mythology has it that Lord Shiva meditated in Koteshwar Temple on his way to Kedarnath. You need to come down through several stairs from the main gate to reach the temple and the Ghat. Colourful depictions of the ancient yatras (Kedar Dham, Nanda Devi and others) are inscribed on the sidewalls. Again, monkeys are everywhere. The mud-coloured still water that was not leaving me behind takes a strong hold at the Bathing Ghat. Huge formations all around and the bits and pieces of woods lying in the water – you can sit there forever. But I did have a negative experience there which I will not mention here due to the known religious tenacity in India.

Hitchhiking in Rudraprayag and Reaching the ‘Other’ Chopta Chandrashila Trek 14 km away from Koteshwar is Chopta. Apparently, there are two Choptas in Rudraprayag district. The one I am talking about is not the one which is famous for being the base of Chopta-Chandrashila trek. This one is a small cluster up on a mountain. I hitched a bike ride and only midway I realized I was riding towards the wrong Chopta. Then I had to hitch two more rides to come down to the centre of Rudraprayag. Upon confirming the road to the ‘real’ Chopta, I had to stand by the road for an hour with the honest intention of hitching a ride. But no vehicle was ready to take me. In this context I must inform that booked jeeps go to Chopta from Rudraprayag. Plenty of jeeps are parked near the pool.

Coming back to hitchhiking, that day I got no ride. So, the last ship to my rescue was the local bus again. From the centre, regular buses run to Ukhimath (Rs. 70), a quaint town I set my foot on during sundown.

Spending the Night in Ukhimath Chandrashila Trek Ukhimath is situated at an elevation of 1311 meters and 41 km away from the town of Rudraprayag. Omkareshwar Temple is the most revered site here, as the idol of Kedarnath is brought from Kedarnath to Ukhimath. The name Ukhimath comes from Ushamath, Usha being the name of the wife of Krishna’s grandson. GMVN Rest house is at a distance of 2 km away from the main bazaar of Ukhimath. You can get dorm beds there. Other rest houses are right beside it. As the dorm was already full, I took shelter for the night at a roadside rest house for Rs. 600. From the balcony the view looked like a live picture only blinking at times. It stayed that way till 7 am in the morning.

Chopta: The So-Called ‘Mini Switzerland of India’ (Phrases We Need to Stop Using) Chopta, a part of Kedarnath wildlife sanctuary, is located at an altitude of 2680 meters. From Ukhimath the distance is 29 km. One can easily access Chopta through the Rishikesh-Devprayag-Kund-Ukhimath route. Known among the tourists as ‘the mini-Switzerland of India’, it has nothing to do with Switzerland. The combination of the elevating road and snow-laden meadows and sidewalks can only be what it is, Chopta, not Switzerland or any other land for that matter. Check out River Rafting in Rishikesh Riding Raging Rapids .

Only booked jeeps go to Chopta from Ukhimath now (Rs. 1500-2000). Shared jeeps or local buses are not available. At 7:30 in the morning, I got the fortunate ride in a car (four riders from Delhi were also going to Chopta) and a roadside Paratha breakfast, and a fun company of those riders all the way up and down the Tungnath trek. That’s the beauty of hitchhiking. You meet lives from each corner.

The Chopta-Tungnath Trek: A Must Take Snow-white Journey Tungnath, one of the highest Shiva temples in the world, is considered as the highest of the Panch Kedar temples (Kedarnath, Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar and Kalpeshwar – five temples forming Panch Kedar temples). At an altitude of 3650m, Tungnath Peak stands as an instance of snowbound sheets on a bed of stony surface and inexplicable beauty. The trek can be undertaken by first timers, as it is considered as an easy trek. One can either take the stipulated trail or go for the steep stone-heaped way for a more adventurous experience. Tips for winter: Wear enough padding to keep yourself warm and durable (something I did not do, hence the impending snowstorm took a significant toll on me).

If nothing, keep a water bottle with you (again, something I did not do, but there was not much need of water from my side as I took the steep way instead of the stony path). Make sure your shoes are compatible with the snow-covered path and can provide firm foot grip (finally something I did do, but my socks were too small). This being my first snow-trek I had my share of initial disorientations which with the help of a fellow trekker transformed into one of the most beautiful adventures I have undertaken so far. The journey I started out alone, ended up in sixteen (another solo-traveller-blogger-trek-guide joined along with ten trekkers). The Tungnath Peak is garnished with the architectural splendour, Tungnath Temple, the yellow door of which adorns itself with red-yellow-white-blue borders. Men meditating around the temple despite the seasoned crowd has an extraordinary sense of reconciliation in it.

There’s an entry fee of Rs. 150.

The Chopta-Chandrashila Trek: How We Survived a Snowstorm Together Chandrashila, the ‘moon rock’ of Uttarakhand, is the second tier in the Chopta-Chandrashila trek. Around 1.5 km away from the Tungnath temple, the trek becomes slightly difficult towards the peak, as the steep peak propels without a proper trail. The weather was already deteriorating when we were at Tungnath, but we did not take heed. The trekkers coming down the Chandrashila peak warned us against the unforeseen contingency, but we did not take heed. Mild snow began falling, but we didn’t take heed. I remember asking another trekker, ‘Should we go?’ In my mind I said, “Yes, yes, yes’, he also said, ‘yes, yes, yes’. That decided it.

Can you imagine trekking through a white sea with white nectar sliding through you? (Which is ironic, given that after a few minutes we must slide as well, won’t feel like nectar then) On the way I kept shouting random phrases, which is generally the outcome of the highest level of contentment in my world.

I reached the summit with the dire help of my newfound trek-guide-friend, sliced in frostbite. My legs were already completely frozen (since I did not have enough padding, snow frosted inside my shoes) and my fingers were almost gone. My lips were struggling to curl up while forming words. On top of it, the sprinkles of lightning and thunder were burning through our hair. We could feel the lightening the way you can feel your skin.

The downhill side of this experience was risky and frightening. We had to slide twice from the peak in a condition in which white fog is all you can fathom. I slipped through the snow with no sense of direction, keeping my eyes closed. The trek guide had to recede our downstream motion after each slide until we reached Tungnath in this way. At Tungnath, we indulged in a bonfire, especially because I was the ultimate food of the bait. My numb hands glowed in a kind of physical pain I faced for the first time. I owe a great deal to three individuals (Aman, Ankit and Pramit) for their undivided attention to my wellbeing.

We came down two in a row on the sheet of fresh black ice. The sky, like a seasoned lizard, changed its clothing’s a numerous number of times. Yet I was not in a state to take in the exceptional occurrence I had the good fortune of experiencing. We climbed down to Chopta at around 7:30 pm in utter darkness with the help of torch and loving hands.

Tips of the Trade for the Chopta-Chandrashila Trek Anything is possible. Anything can happen in the mountains. The trek that is considered as an easy trek can be transfused to a vicious experience. The base of travelling is to understand those selves which lay hidden otherwise. How you will behave during an extreme situation cannot be taught through the Discovery channel. You live the experience, you behave vulnerable, you learn, you proudly take it in.

Physical pain is not about the sense of fear. Physical pain exceeded any generality when I had no fear of the storm. The thought of death or any fatality did not even cross my mind, thanks to the excruciating physical pain I was in. And most importantly, always go prepared. Don’t go to a snow-trek wearing a woolen bottom, like I did (a local in Ukhimath told me that there will be no snow in the trek).

Trek to Deoria Tal: A Lake Up the Mountain – Chandrashila Trek Deoria Tal is a lake on the lap of a mountain at an elevation of 2438 meters. The base of the trek is Village Sari, from where you can solely rely on your foot for the next 2.5 km. Deoria Tal is famous for its 300° panoramic view, even though the view was unclear when I visited. The trek is a series of steps climbing up the mountain. Maggi points and campsites are settled on the way. The ascent is easy but requires strength which can easily be replenished with Burans Juice from a stall on the way.

Camping is not allowed near the lake, but plenty of campsites are available throughout the mountain. Also, an entry fee of Rs. 150 needs to be paid to enter the arena surrounding the lake. How to Reach Rudraprayag – Chandrashila Trek

By Bus: Direct buses from Rishikesh, Devprayag, Srinagar or any other city to Rudraprayag can easily be accessible. The fare from Srinagar to Rudraprayag is Rs. 60. One can reach Chopta directly from Rudraprayag in shared jeep. Or, one can take the local bus from Rudraprayag to Ukhimath (Rs. 70) and take booked jeep from Ukhimath to Chopta (Rs. 1500-2000). Know more about Srinagar – The City of  Splendid Houseboats

By Train: The nearest railway station is in Dehradun. From Dehradun buses are available up to Rudraprayag. Shared cab or jeep will drop you off in Chopta.

By Flight: Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is the nearest airport. From the airport buses are available for Rudraprayag. Again, from Rudraprayag you can hire shared cab or jeep.

Thanks for posting this piece of writing. I’m without doubt frustrated with struggling to search out relevant and brilliant commentary on this subject. Everybody now goes to the very far extremes to either drive home their viewpoint that either: everyone else in the planet is wrong, or two that everyone but them does not in actuality understand the situation. Many thanks for your succinct, applicable insight.

Some truly nice and useful information on this internet site, besides I think the style and design has superb features.

En route Sari, you will pass a holy confluence at Devprayag, one of the five prayags. This is a sacred site for the Hindus as it sees the confluence of two rivers Alakananda and Bhagirathi. As you traverse along the mountain road, the river keeps you company all along the way and you will also enjoy captivating views of the lower Garhwal Himalayas.

The Sari village is a small mountain settlement with about 100 houses lined on the mountains and many beautiful paddy fields enhancing its natural beauty. Sari offers stunning meadow views and the people here are warm and friendly. You will also get the first glimpses of the Chandrashila summit from here.

If you arrive on time, you can venture out to explore the Sari village. There is also a small market in Sari and you might find something of value to purchase from here.

  • Altitude: Deoriatal 2,400m/7,850 ft.
  • Trek: 3km | 1hr.
  • Altitude Gain:- 400m/ 1,300ft
  • Steep ascent till the campsite.

  • Deoriatal lake is 10 minutes walk from campsite.
  • Stay in Tent - dome tent (Twin sharing) and swiss tent (triple/quad sharing).

Today is the first day of your adventure and you will trek from Sari to Deoriatal. It is a very short trek of about 3 km that takes you to Deoriatal. The trek to Deoriatal is quite easy with mixed ascents and descents along the way.

From Sari follow the well-defined rocky trail that gradually climbs up the mountains. Keep walking on the trail and after 30 minutes, you will come across your first major viewpoint. Stop for a while and treat your eyes to alluring views of mountains and valleys. Treading further along the trail, you will come across a forest of maple and Rhododendron. If you visit during the spring, the Rhododendrons will be red and blooming a beautiful visual treat. Another hour or so and you arrive at Deoriatal.

Deoriatal provides the perfect dreamy setting for camping. The lovely alpine lake is nestled beautifully in a mountain clearing and is surrounded on all sides by the majestic Garhwal Himalayas. Mt. Chaukhamba is the most prominent here and it casts its reflection on the lake waters, a surreal sight to behold.  Wait until morning when the mist lifts and the sun rays warm up the peaks in a golden glow. The snow-clad mountains in the backdrop with the lake taking center-stage, it is the perfect place to capture some Instagram-worthy shots.

From the trail, you can spot the Chandrashila summit and below it, the Tungnath temple, which is just a speck in the mountains and you may need binoculars to spot the temple. Deoriatal is also a Green-Trail hotspot and you are going to find a lot of litter around the campsites, keep your eco bags ready to collect the garbage.

Reaching Deoriatal, we will set out tents for the night and a hot lunch and dinner will be provided at the campsite. You will have almost an entire day in your hand that you can use to explore the area and acclimatize as well. This is also a popular site for birdwatching and you may even spot some rare Himalayan birds. Explore the trails around the campsite and let the tranquillity of the mountains slowly engulf you.

Today is the most scenic day of your trek and a treat for all nature lovers. Today’s trail is made spectacular with the Rhododendron covers that become denser and denser as you trek uphill. The Kedar dome and the Chaukhamba peaks also peek through the tree covers. You will spot two varieties of Rhododendrons here, red and pink and during the months of March and April, the trail is set ablaze in hues of crimson. The forest cover soon opens into a beautiful clearing, the Rohini Bugyal meadow which is lined with Rhododendrons on all sides.

The trek today is moderate starting with a gradual ascent followed by a slight descent, which eases to a gradual ascent until Rohini Bugyal. From Rohini Bugyal there’s a steep descent followed by a mix of ascents and descents to Baniyakund. As the Rhododendron cover clears up, you will get clear views of Chandrashila Peak in the distance, and on your right below, you can see the Sari village once again.

The trail passes through Kedarnath Sanctuary, so you may be able to spot some Himalayan Wildlife like red foxes and other small animal species and birds like Griffon Vultures, which are huge birds of prey as well as Verditer Flycatcher and Himalayan Woodpecker. Every now and then, you may also come across small shrines with prayer flags tied to them. These temples are built by the locals. Walk for 20 more minutes and you will reach a landmark temple, the Bagdwal temple and you will spot three paths branching out.

One route connects back to Sari village, another connects to Ukhimath and there’s a third descending path, which leads us to Rohini Bugyal. The Chandrashila and Kala Parvat become quite prominent from here. Walk for about 30 minutes and you will pass a small rivulet. This is your water source and you can fill your bottles here. Tread across a wooden bridge to cross the river and a small uphill climb will lead you to Rohini Bugyal.

As you climb uphill from Rohini Bugyal, the views get better and better and you will observe a series of shepherd huts lining the hills. During the summer months, the locals occupy these huts along with their livestock. The Rohini Bugyal meadows provide the perfect spot for cattle grazing. From here, crossing a few gradual ascents, you will reach Baniyakund. Further ahead, there is a motorable road that leads to Chopta, and from here take the trail on the right to reach the Baniyakund campsite, a clearing between the forests. You will stay overnight in Cottages/ Camp.

  • View: Mountains of Garhwal and Kumaon- Nanda Devi, Trishul, Nandaghunti, Dronagiri, Chaukhamba, Kedar dome, Thalaysagar, Gangotri ranges, Jahanukut etc.

Today is the summit day and we will have an early start at the wee hours before sunrise so that we can catch the sunrise from Tungnath. The path from Chopta to Tungnath wades along a well-defined, concrete trail. The trek from Chopta to Tungnath is about 3 km and the trail entwines along meadows and forests before making way to the Tungnath temple and 1.5 km from Tungnath lies Chandrashila summit. The trail remains buried deep in snow during the winters adding to the challenge of the climb to Chandrashila from Tungnath, which is already quite steep.

The trail from Chopta to Tungnath is well-defined which makes it quite accessible but at the same time, it is a little steep with numerous scissor bends. As you make your way to the second last scissor bend, you can see the Tungnath temple on the right and the Chandrashila summit. The views start getting increasingly better from here and Tungnath Temple is just half a kilometer away. On the left is a view overlooking a valley of Birch trees, which is again a prime spot to sight bird species like Monal and Griffon Vultures.

Soon you will reach the Tungnath temple, which remains closed in winter and you will find snow until April here. The Tungnath Temple is one of the Panch Kedars and is steeped in mythology and folklore. The legend according to Mahabharata goes that the Panch Kedars was built by the Pandavas, asking for Lord Shiva’s forgiveness and atonement of their sins incurred by killing their kins in the battle of Kurukshetra. Lord Shiva appeared in a bull form and parts of the bull appeared in these five locations, where the shrines were built. Tungnath is where the limbs and chest of the bull appeared.

From Tungnath temple, the trek to the Chandrashila summit is a short but challenging one as it is pretty steep. Crampons and gaiters are a must if you are attempting this trek in the winter. Follow your trek leaders instructions to safely make it to the summit. The trail to Chandrashila starts just behind the temple complex. You ascend 600 ft from Tungnath conquering a very steep climb. Once you reach the Chandrashila Base, the Chandrashila peak becomes visible and another 30 to 45 minutes climb takes you to the summit, where you will get some epic mountain views including Mt. Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, Nanda Devi, Thalaysagar, Gangotri Ranges, Kamet, Chaukhamba, Kedar Dome, Dunagiri, Jahanukut and more.

The sunrise view from the Chandrashila summit is unlike any you will ever see and this is one of the best photo points in the Himalayas. At Chandrashila summit there is another temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, which is believed to have been built by Lord Rama for the atonement of the sin of killing Ravana. The trek back to Chopta follows the same path. Retrace your steps back to Chopta and from there you will drive back to the Baniyakund Cottages/ Camp.

In the unlikely event that TTH cancels a trek prior to the scheduled departure date:

While it is extremely rare for TTH to cancel a trek, we understand that unforeseen circumstances or natural disasters may occasionally require us to do so before the scheduled departure. These circumstances could include continuous rain or snow, thunderstorms, snowstorms, landslides, floods, earthquakes, or any other natural calamity that poses a risk to the safety of our trekkers. Additionally, unforeseeable events such as local riots, curfews, pandemics, lockdowns, government orders, or any similar situations that compromise the safety of the trekking experience may also necessitate a cancellation.

In the event of such a cancellation, TTH will provide you with a voucher equivalent to the amount you paid for the trek. This voucher can be redeemed for any of our treks within the next year, allowing you to still enjoy an adventure with us at a later date.

  • The issuance of a voucher is not applicable in situations where you are required to descend from the trek for any reason. The trek leader may make the decision to send you down from the trek due to factors such as insufficient fitness level, symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), high blood pressure, exceeding the designated turn-around-time, health concerns, or if you are found smoking, drinking, or violating the rules set for the trek. In such cases, the provision of a voucher does not apply.

In the rare event that TTH shifts a trek:

We would like to emphasize that weather conditions in high-altitude areas are highly unpredictable and can undergo sudden changes at any time, irrespective of the day. Additionally, circumstances beyond our control, such as natural disasters, political unrest, pandemics, and lockdowns, may impact the feasibility of conducting a trek. In cases where we are unable to proceed with an event due to such circumstances that are beyond our direct control, we will make every effort to provide you with an alternative trek that is safer and more suitable.

In such situations, we will issue a voucher to offset the cost difference between the originally scheduled trek and the alternative trek. This voucher can be redeemed at any time within one year from the date of issue. Please note that a refund fee or reimbursement of the cost difference is not applicable in these cases.

  • Chandrashila Trek: A Detailed Traveler’s Guide

Tripnomadic

Nestled at an elevated height of 13,000 feet above the sea, Chandrashila is a favorite destination of many travelers who want to get a bit of an adrenaline rush trekking on this scenic route. Being one of the most popular trekking sessions one can engage in Uttarakhand , the good news is that it is available throughout the year. However, during winters, there may be chances of the route being covered in snow.

Being one of the most frequented treks loved by travelers, the popularity of the Chandrashila trek can be attributed to its accessibility and easiness as well. This makes the route suitable for all trekkers and what’s more is that people can get to be caught in the fascination of the 360-degree view of the snow-laden magnificent Himalayan peaks featuring the likes of Nanda Devi, Kedarnath Dome, Chaukhamba, and Trishul. You can engage in some spiritual solace and explore the sacredness of the place by visiting the holy Tungnath shrine and paying obeisance. Soak your senses in the refreshing and warm aroma of the deodar trees that are enough to make you immerse in the beauty of the moment and forget all your troubles and tensions. The green meadows enliven your imagination and make you feel like you are caught in a beautiful renaissance painting. While you’re in Chandrashila experiencing all these beauties and emotions, you feel that life is beautiful.

A Brief History of Chandrashila

The word “Chandrashila” translates to “Moon Rock”. The place has two major mythologies associated with it. Some suggest that Lord Lakshman came to this place to meditate at the Chandrashila peak after he defeated Ravana, the demon king. According to some people, Chandra, the moon God, spent his penance at this peak. This makes it evident that along with some breathtaking trekking moments, you will also get to engage in some historical moments and explore mythology.

chandrashila trek yhai

Why should you experience the Chandrashila trek?

Life can get exhausting. Today, we lead fast-paced lives where our sole focus is fulfilling our daily needs and ensuring that we meet all the deadlines of our job. Performing all of these tasks is necessary to enjoy a secure and stable present and future. However, amidst this rush, one must learn to slow down, take a break, and have some change of air and environment so that they can engulf themselves in bliss and tranquility. If you are longing to take a break and refresh your senses, there is no denying that Chandrashila is the perfect place to get rid of your exhaustion. From enrapturing your senses in the scenic sights of the place to awakening your spirituality and getting enlightened about the place where Lord Rama’s younger brother Lakshman meditated by visiting the Chandrashila Temple, you can have a variety of experiences apart from adventurous trekking in this beautiful abode.

Guide To Staying In Chandrashila

Located at a height of 4,000 meters, Chandrashila is considered to be Chandranath’s summit. You must keep in mind that you will not find accommodation facilities or the opportunity to camp at the peak. Therefore, to book accommodation, you have to travel to Tungnath Temple which is 1.5 km away from the peak. However, even in this area, the ashram has limited rooms which are not available for booking either. Therefore, the best place to stay during your trip to Chandrashila is Chopta where you can find sufficient accommodation facilities. You can start your trekking from here.

Guide To Chandrashila Food

The Tungnath Temple is open from May to October during which travelers can come here to indulge in some local delicacies. However, apart from this, you can only find food facilities at Chopta in the respective camps or nearby hotels.

Itinerary for Chandrashila

Chandrashila trek has around 3 different routes and your itinerary will mainly depend on where you are staying. Two of the major starting points, however, are Sari Village and Kund camp. If you are planning a 5-days trip to Chandrashila, you can plan it according to the following itinerary or customize it according to the number of days you have planned the trip for.

Day 1: Base Camp

You can set up your base camp at the picturesque Sari village which is located in the Rudraprayag district. From Haridwar, it takes an 8-hour drive to this base camp. Trekkers can stay in guest houses, homestays, or campsites. Before heading to Deoria Tal the following day, trekkers take an overnight halt at Sari. During their stay here, travelers get to witness the village’s lofted landmass, the majestic snowy mountains, and the beautiful scenic view causing them to develop a sense of serendipity.

Day 2: Deoria Tal

With a distance of 3km from Sari, Deoria Tal has an elevation of an estimated 1300 feet. The entire trek requires almost an hour to complete. It is a beautiful campsite where you can be mesmerized by the abundance of maple forests. While trekking, you can rest in the “Hawa Ghar” which is a convenient facility constructed by the forest department to allow trekkers to have some rest during their exhausting yet exciting activity.

Apart from the gigantic Himalayan peaks, you can also grace your sight with the pretty emerald lake located at a height of 8000 feet. While trekking in this enchanting place, you can witness the beautiful stretches of scenic farmlands, dainty village houses, and ancient historic temples. Once you reach Deoria Tal, be prepared to soothe your eyes with the pleasant views waiting to greet you. You can play your overnight stay at the campsite located near the lake.

Day 3: Chopta

Once you are done admiring the majestic Mount Chaukhamba that looms over the mesmerizing Deoria Tal Lake, be prepared for the bid day that comprises the Tungnath Chandrashila Trek. Here, you will be climbing further at 1000 feet. This is where you have to gear up and brace yourselves to trek along the treacherous pathways that are located amidst jagged alleys and abundantly dense forests.

The distance between Deoria Tal to Chopta is approximately 14 km and takes around 9 hours. While trekking in this route, you will come across 2 or 3 water points ahead of Akash Kamini Waterfall, Rohini Bugyal, and Bhrujgali. In Rohini Bugyal, you can trek amidst forest ridges and enjoy the endearing views of rare Himalayan birds. You can soothe your hearing senses with their sweet chirpings.

Experience spectacular and memorable sunsets in this region and whilst you are trekking along this trail, you will also come across the tiny huts along the mountains which are occupied by local shepherds. Stop for a while and interact with them. Tell them about your trekking experience so far and get to know more about their daily lifestyle because life is not just about the friends you already have but also about the strangers you make friends with along the way. After your trekking session, you will reach Chopta in the evening where you can relax at the rejuvenating campsite.

Day 4: Chandrashila Trek

On day 4, get ready to be involved in more adventures as you trek along with one of the most popular trekking routes that are the Tungnath trek. During this trek, you will surpass a Shiva temple that is believed to be almost 1000-year old. The Tungnath temple is also considered to be the world’s highest Shiva temple. You will be ascending amongst steep climbs that pave the way for Chandrashila peak which is 8km away from Chopta.

The final summit is 45 minutes away from here and once you reach it, you can immerse yourself in the beautiful Kumaon and Garhwal ranges from the top. You will also get sights of some prominent peaks such as the Kedar dome, Nanda Devi, Gangotri ranges, Kamet, Trishul, and Chaukhamba to name a few. You can descend to Chopta valley after a serene and exhilarating trekking session which will take around 2 hours. You can stay in guesthouses after you arrive here.

Day 5: Departure

You may be leaving but you are sure to leave with a desire to come back again.

Brief Itinerary

Detailed itinerary.

Dehradun (640M) to Sari Village (2,000M)

Distance: 225 kms

Duration: 7-8 hours

If you have signed up with Bikat for a drive from Dehradun to Sari, our day starts early. All of us assemble at the meeting point by 7 in the morning so we can start our long drive up to Sari – a quiet hamlet deep in the laps of the Himalayas. Although there’s nothing more on the agenda for today other than the 8-hour drive and settling into mountain air, it is better to leave as early as possible for two reasons:

One, so we can reach as early as possible and give our bodies enough rest for what’s coming the next day. And, two, roads on the mountains are unpredictable and it is always better to account for delays when we start. It is also better to reach before it gets dark.

Sari is a picturesque hamlet in the Ukhimat block of the Rudraprayag district bordered with oak and rhododendrons trees which are also a constant throughout the trek. Declared as an eco-tourist village by the government of Uttarakhand, this quiet farming hamlet rests peacefully in the lap of the Himalayas far away from the noises of the city. Patterns formed from the dozens of paddy fields on the many slopes of the mountains in the village make for a neat design soothing to the eye. Expect to reach this peaceful haven by early evening to be welcomed by some warm smiles into a warm homestay.

Sari (2,000M) to Deoriatal (2,400M)

Distance: 4 kms

Duration: 3-4 hours

Today is a short and easy day with a gradual ascent all the way to the campsite right next to this marvel of an alpine lake – the first highlight of our trek. The trail takes us through the thick forests of oak and rhododendrons on a well laden path to reveal a placid Deoriatal at its short end. We have all day to gaze at this beauty as it reflects the changing hues of the day in its clear waters. Overnight in tents.

Deoriatal (2,400M) to Baniya Kund (2,600M) via Rohini Bugyal

Distance: 18 kms

Duration: 5-6 hours

Today is a long day but one filled with immaculate beauty as we walk through thick forests ablaze with rhododendrons of various hues which get thicker and thicker in density as we advance. The path goes through the Kedarnath Sanctuary. If you look closely, you may find some of the animals and birds that inhabit this region. The trail today also offers up some magnificent views of the big peaks as it promised to do. The thicket of these blooming colours gives way to a clearing which is the meadows of Rohini Bugyal. And just a little further from here is another spectacle to behold which is our destination for the day: Baniya Kund. This will be our home for tonight and tomorrow night.

The distance for today may be long but the climb is not very strenuous. The trail goes up and down to cover a total of 200M of ascent for today.

Baniya Kund (2,600M) to Chandrashila (3,700M) via Tunganath to Baniya Kund (2,600M)

Distance: 7-8 kms

Duration: 6 hours

Today is two high-points bunched in one on a path that takes us on well-marked trails. The day starts early so we have a chance to catch the first rays of the sun from the Tunganath Temple. The trail alternates between birch trees and meadows to take us to Tunganath and then onwards towards Chandrashila Top which presents the most glorious views of the highest peaks in the Garhwal Range. Tunganath to Chandrashila Top which lies at 3,700M is a fairly steep climb but the trail for today is otherwise gradual.

After our venture for today, we return to Baniya Kund for the night.

Baniya Kund (2,600M) to Dehradun (640M) via Sari (2,000M)

Distance: 4 kms + 225 kms

Duration: 2 hours trek + 7-8 hours drive

We retrace our steps back to Sari to get our drive back to Dehradun. Expect to reach Dehradun by late evening.

Small Group Size

Our batch sizes are capped at 15 for smaller treks with the trek leader and trekker ratio of 1:8. This ratio, in our years of experience, has proven to deliver the best trekking experience for individuals as well as groups. Capping the size of the group ensures individual attention to each trekker so that no signs of distress or need during the trek go unnoticed. It also helps to form a more cohesive cohort with better group energy which helps define the rhythm and pace of days on the trek. As you go higher up on the BRS scale, since the stakes are higher, expeditions have an even smaller group size with the ratio of expedition leader to climber set at 1:2.

chandrashila trek yhai

Qualified Trek Leaders

We follow a rigorous regime of hiring and training our experts in the field. Each trek leader is a certified mountaineer with years of experience in the field. In addition to their qualification, they also go through practical and situational training to tackle any and all kinds of sudden conditions that may present themselves on the ground. Being unpredictable is the core nature of the mountains but being ready for any circumstance as best as possible is a controllable asset that we try to nurture. Our field experts are also trained in basic medicine and first-aid response. Watch: Forerunners - The Making of A Trek Leader At Bikat Adventures

chandrashila trek yhai

  • Chandrashila Trek
  • The Chandrashila Trek offers a view that is unmatched. Perhaps the best mountain vistas of our Indian Himalayas can be seen from the peak.
  • There is so much to take in that you can’t possibly take it all in, similar to a large feast. The majority of trekkers will never forget the experience.
  •  The Gangotri range of peaks, Mount Thalaysagar, Kedarnath, and the Kedar dome can all be seen from the left of this peak.
  •  Janhukut and Mandani Parbat, just right in front is the majestic Chaukhamba. They average approximately 7,000 metres in height. The Gauri Parbat, Hathi Parbat, and Dunagiri are to the right.
  • Not only are the vistas breath-taking. The trek itself is special in the winter. It’s almost surreal to see the trail winding through the fluffy snow beneath the oak and rhododendron tree canopy.
  •  The DeoriatalLake is snow-covered all around, but Mt Chaukhamba towers over it.
  • In addition to Deoriatal, camping in the snow in BaniyaKund is a treat.

Best time to Trek in Chandrashila

Despite being a high-altitude trek, Chopta Chandrashila or Deoriatal Chandrashilayou can trek roughly 8 to 9 months of the year. Except for July and August, the trek is accessible for 10 months of the year (except the peak rainy season in Uttarakhand).

  • Without the monsoons, DeoriatalChandrashila has four distinct seasons: winter, spring, summer, and autumn.
  • Every season is unique and beautiful in its own way.

Highlights of Chandrashila Trekking

The trek from Deoriatal to Chandrarashila is simple to moderate. Frankly, Deoriatal-Chandrashila is the most secure of any of our high altitude hikes. It increases in altitude gradually to give your body time to acclimate.

  • On the trek, you have hardly ever encountered any incidences of altitude sickness.
  • Despite this, the hike ascends to a high altitude of 12,083 feet.
  • You can visit the Tugnath temple, which is the highest Shiva temple in the world.
  • As you trek via HarkiPauri, Chopta, and Sari and camp amidst the picturesque Himalayan Mountains and Kedar, Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi, Bandarpunch, as well as the Deoria Tal Lake, you will reach a maximum altitude of 12,083 feet.
  • There is nothing better than re-establishing contact with nature than taking a private guided bird viewing tour.
  • The route to the trek passes through Rishikesh, Sari, and Chopta, and it is lined with vibrant clumps of rhododendron, oak, and pine.
  • You can go bird watching and have picnics by the lake while you’re here.
  • Don’t miss the captivating sight of the golden-breasted eagles from the summit.
  • The Deoriatal-Chandrashila walk features some of the most densely forested routes because it is located right in the middle of the Kedarnath Musk Deer Sanctuary. A large number of birds also accompany the forests.

Travel Advice for the Chandrashila Trek

  • Please be aware that Chandrashila is located at a height of about 4,000 metres if you intend to hike there.
  • Despite the relatively easy nature of the trip, make sure you are physically fit.
  • Chandrashila is livable because it is the summit itself. Even at Chopta, amenities like ATMs and gas stations are not available.
  • These facilities are located in Gopeshwar, which is quite a distance away.

Chandrashila Trek Itinerary

  • Starting from Delhi at around 10:00 PM, embark on your exciting journey by boarding an evening by Sedan, SUV, or Swift Dzire (depending on the group size).
  • Get up early in the morning and have a delicious meal in the midst of nature by going to the mountains.
  • Arrive in Rishikesh by morning and proceed to Chota.
  • Unwind and enjoy the stunning views of nature next to the Chota campsite.
  • Dinner and overnight lodging in Chota
  •  Prepare for the next stop after a great breakfast at Chopta in the morning.
  • Start the 6-kilometer hike so that you can get more interesting information about the area from the residents.
  • You can obtain Tungnath, which is located 3680 metres above sea level. Once you get at the highest Shiva Temple in the world, you can meditate.
  • Continue hiking till you reach Chandrashila Peak, the trek’s ultimate goal.
  • You can experience a 180-degree views of higher Himalayan peaks including Nanda Devi, Bandarpunch, Chaukhamba, and Kedar Peak are available for your enjoyment and admiration.
