Costa Rica’s “Pura Vida” Lifestyle Prioritizes Happiness, and You Can Harness It No Matter Where You Live

pura vida lifestyles travel

But when my alarm goes off a few hours later, I open the wooden shutters to my terrace and am rewarded with one of the most cinematic vistas I've ever seen: deep turquoise waves lapping gently at a sandy shore, lush green flora encircling a majestic bay, and a pair of capuchin monkeys leaping from tree to tree. All that was missing was a cute guy strolling down the beach, clad with a surfboard and man bun. (Plenty of those guys would come later, thankfully.)

With a landscape like this, of course Costa Rica is one of the happiest countries in the world , I think to myself, sliding open the terrace doors and inhaling the already humid morning air.

Sure, that characterization is overly simplistic, but Costa Rica actually has been named the happiest country worldwide in the Happy Planet Index several times since 2009, ranking higher in the than the United States and United Kingdom in terms of lifespan (79.1 years) and life satisfaction (10th out of 140 countries). Gallup also gave Costa Rica high marks in its 2016 World Happiness Rankings , rating the country significantly higher than any other South or Central American nation and several percentage points ahead of the USA and UK. As if those honors weren't enough, the country's also home to Nicoya , one of five original Blue Zones cities, where people are known to live unusually long, healthy, and happy lives.

There's even a national motto that sums up the uniquely joyful Costa Rican spirit: pura vida , meaning "the good life." People use it as a greeting and as an expression of gratitude or contentment, but beyond that, it encapsulates an entire lifestyle—one that's the complete opposite of the burnout-laced culture that's become status quo in the States.

"'Pura vida' means many things…It means life is pure. It means everything is well." —Heriberto Peña, Four Seasons Costa Rica health and wellness ambassador

"'Pura vida' means many things," says Heriberto "Beto" Peña , Health and Wellness Ambassador at Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo , where I stay during my visit. "It means you're grounded, you're happy, you know who you are. You're submerged in nature. It means life is pure. It means everything is well."

Within a few hours, I'm feeling the pura vida vibes in a major way, and they only intensify as my week in the country continues. Yes, may be in part because my itinerary is packed with water sports, sound-healing sessions, Ayurvedic spa treatments, and meditation, but those weren't the only reasons. I made it my mission to learn the source of the pura vida magic from the locals in order to enact the knowledge and replicate the effects back home in Los Angeles. Here are a few of the things I learned and have begun to implement in my day-to-day life.

4 simple ways to harness the pura vida lifestyle and access more happiness.

pura vida meaning

1. Go to bed early and wake up for the sunrise

Costa Rica's close to the equator, which means the days are relatively short—the sun rises between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. and sets between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. year-round. Peña tells me that most people go to bed before 10 p.m. so they can rise with the sun and make the most of their daylight hours. "For us, it's really important to see the sunrise and the sunset. We wake up and do morning workouts—where I live, you can see a lot of people doing their workout in front of the beach, seeing the colors of the morning."

I won't lie; it wasn't easy to wake up for 6 a.m. yoga classes during my visit, even though they did come with some spectacular ocean views. But I did it, and have been trying to stick with that schedule at home. As a result, my mornings feel less manic and more spacious. Yes, it means I no longer stay up until 1 a.m. re-watching old episodes of '90s TV—bu those simply aren't a key ingredient in the pura vida lifestyle.

2. Eat simply

There are many amazing restaurants on Peninsula Papagayo, but I ordering the same thing at all of them—a vegetarian casado , or a traditional plate consisting of rice, beans, grilled vegetables, plantains, and tortillas. The back-to-basics simplicity to this approach was especially refreshing, and, according to Peña, one of the reasons he believes Costa Ricans stay healthy well into old age.

"People in Costa Rica don't mix a lot of things," he says. "The basic breakfast after our workout is rice, beans, eggs, and sour cream. Lunch is made with rice, beans, salad, vegetables, and chicken, fish, pork, or beef. Mostly, the dinners are vegetarian—Costa Rican families don't normally have meat at night." He says meals like these are easy to digest, and anecdotally, I found to be true.

Another benefit of this food outlook? I've noticed since implementing it in my real life that it's simplifying my meals in terms of money I'm spending on ingredients and time spent prepping meals. And that's added up to less all-around stress.

3. Spend time in nature

Confession: Even though I live across the street from the beach, I sometimes go weeks without putting my feet in the sand. None of the born-and-bred Costa Ricans I met took their lush surroundings for granted—all of the them told me that in their spare time, they prioritize time spent outdoors.

This is good for mental health , as Peña points out to me, but it's also a win for creativity. Karen Arceyuth, head mixologist at Four Seasons Costa Rica's Nemare restaurant, uses nature as inspiration for her fanciful cocktails. Take the "Monteverde," for example—made with absinthe, lemongrass Guaro Cacique (a rum-like Costa Rican liquor), lime juice, and fresh mint and coriander leaves. It's an homage to the country's Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and its dizzying array of plant and animal life.

So if you, like me, often think you're too busy to take a walk around your neighborhood, you might want to reframe your perspective of productivity to one that's more pura vida-friendly. The eventual results of brilliance may surprise you.

4. Prioritize people

Not only is social connection crucial for mental health , but it can also help us ward off a number of physical diseases . And when I asked locals what they do when they're off the clock, every single one said that they spend time with family (or friends who are like family, if their birth family lives far away). It leads me to think that this is the key reason Costa Rica ranks so highly in terms of longevity and happiness.

"At night, we are always with family, which gives us that warm feeling that we need," says Peña. His family lives in the central part of Costa Rica, a six hour drive away, but that doesn't stop him from visiting them whenever he has a chance. "I need that love coming from them to make me feel grounded," he says, noting that the calm he feels from family time can't be replicated by his yoga or meditation practice.

There's also a broader sense of community that's nearly palpable in Costa Rica. Four Seasons guests have the opportunity to spend time volunteering in the surrounding towns, and I visited a local school with Peña to do yoga and share healthy snacks with kindergarten-age kids. Trite as it may sound, by the end of the morning I felt like everyone I met was part of my extended family. Both the teachers and students were so welcoming and present, greeting our group with hugs and big smiles and their contagious pura vida spirit.

Their warmth was a huge contrast to my arrival back in LA, when my Lyft driver barely even acknowledged me as I climbed into the car. That exchange filled me with even more urgent determination to sprinkle a bit of that legendary pura vida energy wherever I go.

My next visit to Costa Rica will definitely include a road trip, and I'll be taking these car stretches along for the ride. Costa Rica would also make a great honeymoon destination, even though that concept is evolving in a big way .

The Nicoya Region in Costa Rica Is a 'Blue Zone' Where Many Residents Live Till 100 — Here's Their Secret

Costa Rica's Nicoya region has 900 residents over 90 right now. Here's how the area has become a coveted "Blue Zone."

Nicoya, on the Atlantic side of Costa Rica, is a city, a canton (a municipality of sorts), and an entire peninsula of Costa Rica. It’s also a place death forgets. Named a Blue Zone, which is a place where people regularly live past the age of 100, the average life expectancy in Nicoya is 80 years (it’s 76.4 years in the U.S.)

“They have the world’s lowest rate of middle-age mortality,” said Dan Buettner , journalist and founder of Blue Zones . “A Nicoya 60-year-old has an eight-fold better chance of reaching 100 than an American does.” So what keeps Nicoya residents living long, long lives? Their hardworking but low-stress lifestyles are largely at play, the experts report.

Courtesy of Visit Costa Rica

Residents of Nicoya Peninsula live longer in large part due to the region’s calcium-rich water, healthy eating, family-based living, outdoor activity, and commitment to a pura vida lifestyle. The pura vida approach means slowing down, eliminating stress, and taking time to connect with nature, friends, and family. “Life in Nicoya is more relaxed, people have a greater sense of community, and as a result, stress is significantly reduced,” said Simón Carrillo, regional representative of the Nicoya Peninsula at the Costa Rican Tourism Board .

The average diet in Nicoya is simple, hearty, and largely plant-based: rice, corn, beans, squash, and fresh fruit are the staples of any Nicoya meal, with meat and poultry often not included. “In their day-to-day routine, locals here mainly focus on tending to their agricultural work, which serves as their primary source of income,” Carillo said. When it's time for a meal, they whip up dishes using the fresh ingredients they have on hand.

“Corn, beans, and squash, a.k.a. the three sisters of Mesoamerican agriculture, is arguably one of the healthiest diets to exist,” Buettner emphasized. “Nicoyans also drink significantly less milk than other Costa Ricans.”

Those in Nicoya, as mentioned, are used to agricultural work, and often work tirelessly outdoors harvesting crops — getting plenty of sunlight.

“Sunlight triggers a reaction that converts cholesterol into vitamin D,” Buetttner said. “Most Americans are vitamin D deficient, which is associated with depression, diabetes, obesity, and a suboptimal immune function. Vitamin D, when coupled with calcium [from their calcium-rich water], helps keep bones strong.”

Buettner noted that this hard work doesn’t go away for many of a certain age, citing a 90-year-old woman he recently saw cutting down her grass with a machete. The work doesn’t stop, but neither do the residents of Nicoya. But that doesn’t mean play takes a backseat. Many residents have a preference for a simpler and more relaxed lifestyle, placing importance on spending quality time with family and friends, immersing themselves in the stunning natural surroundings, and finding joy in life's small pleasures. “Life in these parts tends to be unhurried and intimately connected with the beauty of the natural world,” Carrillo said.

Besides the head city of Nicoya, where a few centenarians live, most centenarians of the province live in smaller towns throughout the peninsula. Many of them have never driven a car, and in fact, car transportation in some of these parts is relatively new, as is the supporting infrastructure. Because of this, “physical activity is constant, since the general culture depends less on vehicles and people often walk a lot,” Carillo said. That’s not the only constant physical activity the people of Nicoya partake in. Surrounded by the natural beauty of the area, you'll often find them surfing, exploring nature and hiking trails, or simply swimming and laying by the beach. This daily physical movement coupled with reduced stress also means they are great sleepers, which has plenty of effects on one’s health , potentially including lowered stress, lowered blood pressure, and lower chances of heart disease.

Buettner also emphasized that Nicoya residents aren’t just eating right and moving right — they’re also connecting with others and finding purpose in later life. “Don’t overlook the power of finding one’s purpose, or as locals call it ‘ plan de vida ,’” he said. “They feel the want and need to contribute to the greater good and support their families and friends. This purpose is their reason to get up in the morning and can add up to seven good years to your life. One of the most dangerous years of your life is the year you retire because of a sudden lack of purpose.”

As for the future of the Blue Zone, it seems this region will be considered Blue for many years to come; as of 2021 , according to the Costa Rican Ministry of Health, more than 900 people over 90 had been recorded, along with more than 5,000 residents over 75, the majority of whom enjoy good health in their old age. More sunlight, more water, more good food, more physical activity, and more community — that seems to be the makings of a Nicoya centenarian.

Unlocking the Essence of Pura Vida: Understanding Costa Rica’s Pure Life Philosophy

  • January 29, 2024

In this blog, we dive into the heart of Costa Rica’s cultural gem, “Pura Vida,” unlocking its profound significance and how it shapes the vibrant lifestyle of this Central American paradise. Andrea has spent a decade exploring and embracing the ethos of Pura Vida and offers her insights honed through extensive immersion in the local culture. She offers a comprehensive understanding of how to authentically embrace this carefree, gratitude-infused way of life. From its cultural roots to practical applications, Andrea’s guidance will help you understand Pura Vida and implement it in Costa Rica and beyond.

Costa Rica is “pura vida” where the meaning of “pura vida” here refers to one of the happiest countries in the world. With spectacular natural beauty, a peaceful culture, and a relaxed pace of life, it’s easy to see the way they celebrate life. But there’s a much deeper cultural philosophy that lies underneath the cheerful Costa Rican lifestyle: the mantra of ¡pura vida .

pura vida cost rica

“Pura Vida Culture in Costa Rica”

What Does Pura Vida Mean In Costa Rica?

In Spanish or español, it means “pure life” or “simple life.” But the true meaning of “pura  vida” goes much deeper than just two simple words. When Costa Ricans or Ticos say “pura vida,” it’s a way of saying hello. For the Costa Rican people, it represents a way of life that welcomes a minimal lifestyle, celebrates good fortune, and encourages you to take things in your stride.

Locals use “pura vida” as a greeting, where the term “pura vida” is comparable to saying “hi” or “how’s it going?” Costa Ricans also use it to say “I’m doing well,” “You’re welcome,” “Everything’s cool,” “Everything’s good,” “That’s great,” and even “Oh well.” However, the expression focuses on molding the attitude and approach to life that Ticos led in Costa Rica.  The pura vida lifestyle highlights simplicity, stress-free living, and gratitude for what they have.

Cultural Significance in Costa Rica

The national motto seems to revolve around this phrase. It’s called “Pura Vida” to demonstrate the laid-back, happy-go-lucky attitude of the locals and their viewpoint of living life to the maximum.

This phrase promotes optimism, an easy-going approach, positivity, and tranquility. It suggests living in the present and unwinding in a way that allows you to let go of trivial matters.  You’ll hear a Tico say life’s simple. This culture promotes positive relationships and helps not to sweat over small things.

When you’re visiting Costa Rica, you’ll see ¡pura  vida everywhere – on t-shirts, coffee mugs, sticker labels, shops, and more. Hearing this expression immediately gives us a sense of the local mentality and how they lead their lives.

How Locals Include Pura Vida into Daily Life

“She greeted me with a wave of her hand and said, Pura Vida.”

Every aspect of daily life in Costa Rica is centered on this phrase. Locals move at a more relaxed pace without getting stressed out about deadlines or schedules. They require time to enjoy the good life, including taking pleasure in good food, blending with nature, and sustaining a manageable household. Locals live in the moment rather than stressing over the future.

The pure life mantra is revealed through frequent social interactions and tight-knit communities. Blessed with a positive and friendly mindset, the locals always greet each other with a native “hello” and a welcoming smile.

Leisure activities like community events , and beach trips are important aspects of this lifestyle. For example, community projects organized by groups like Raleigh International reach even the most remote areas in Costa Rica. The local lifestyle encourages groups to travel to areas like the Alto Chirripó Indigenous Territory where they spread education by working with the Ministry of Education in Costa Rica.

Origins and Evolution of Pura Vida Over Time

“I have a chance to watch what inspired the Pura Vida culture.”

Though the term has existed for centuries, the widespread appeal of the expression itself is frequently credited to a 1956 movie.

In the film, the phrase is used as a greeting or to say goodbye. The phrase became Costa Rica’s slogan and what seemed to be a casual expression opened up a whole vista of opportunity. This phrase quickly became part of the country’s nationwide vocabulary and culture.

Over time, a simple phrase used in Costa Rica to say simple things evolved into a complete philosophy of life. The positive results were there to be seen, as Costa Rica became one of the most stable and happiest nations in Latin America. Pura vida came to represent the peaceful, rewarding method of living that the locals delighted in. Now, when someone asks you how many days or días you spent in Costa Rica on the playa or beach, it means that people want to know if you had the time to relax when you went around Costa Rica. This phrase could also be used to say a ton of things.

How to Respond to Pura Vida in Costa Rica

“I saw them shake hands and say Pura Vida to each other.”

As a visitor to Costa Rica, you’ll likely hear it a lot during your travels. Here are some ways to respond.

If someone uses this local greeting, reply back with the same greeting.

When you say “ ¿cómo estás?” which means “How are you” in Spanish, the locals say POO-rah VEE-dah.

You can use the phrase if you feel you’ve got a good price on a shopping item or if you found the drink or food to your liking at a local restaurant.

Say POO-rah VEE-dah when you’re happy or doing well.

Pura Vida Reflects Local Lifestyle

From the serene cloud forests to the vibrant reef, Costa Rica’s spectacular natural landscapes promote this lifestyle. The country’s lavish forests and sunny beaches offer a relaxing atmosphere where life can be enjoyed at a slower pace.

The laid-back local mindset has been rewarded, as Costa Rica is considered a “blue zone” and a secure state.

Tasty, fresh regional cuisine, abundant with tropical fruits, likewise supports the native pursuit of pure living.

Locals take the time to mingle at cafes, greet complete strangers warmly, and take part in activities like surfing on impulse. These daily activities give them immense satisfaction.

The Path to Wellbeing and Happiness

For lots of visitors, experiencing the local culture on a trip to Costa Rica brings in a sense of well-being. It shows the way to let go of needless tension, accept imperfections, go with the flow, and find the pleasure that a simple daily life has to offer.

This attitude trains the mind to focus on today instead of continuously worrying about the future. By practicing gratitude, mindfulness, and a positive outlook, we attain higher levels of life satisfaction.

Experience the Costa Rica Lifestyle

Experience the Costa Rica Lifestyle

“I had a great time photographing birds in the Monteverde Cloud Forest”

To experience the simple lifestyle, it’s important to check out little neighborhoods and see how the residents live. Accept an invitation to the village or try out a rental place that the Costa Ricans use.

Join hikers on a trip to the Arenal Volcano, try zip-lining, or simply go birding in Costa Rica to enjoy its biodiversity.

Once you’ve planned for your trip, enjoy the casual events that come your way.

Walk with the locals. See how they engage in conversation and find joy in daily events.

Try to enjoy the food, take in the smells of the countryside, and enjoy your leisure trips into the jungle.

Imperfections are accepted, and simplicity is the mantra.

Blend with the surroundings to leave the daily grind behind.

Look for opportunities to meet new people and gain new experiences.

Bringing Pura Vida Home – Be Happy with Pura Vida

Reduced stress and increased overall happiness are what make people happy in Costa Rica.

As one local had to say “Here, life is supposed to be enjoyed, not endured.”

Grab the opportunity to reduce the suffering of drug addicts and alcoholics. For instance, groups like PuraVidaForGood provide structured recovery housing to the families of these people to create an atmosphere where family members can experience a sober lifestyle without stress.  Regardless of obstacles, locals in Costa Rica agree that this low-stress culture boosts quality of life and social ties.

However, the sluggish rate and emphasis on leisure could make it possible for a lack of motivation or performance issues for some. As a migrant commented, “It’s easy to just veg out at the beach every day instead of accomplishing goals.” Furthermore, the leisure lifestyle may not prepare youth for competitive international jobs requiring long hours. Strong family ties in Costa Rica may help bring an end to the threats of violence and drug traffic, especially when you consider the fact that the country is the world’s largest drug market and the biggest producer of cocaine.

Pura Vida Differs from Aloha and Other Lifestyles

This local lifestyle of Costa Rica is similar in many ways to tropical cultures like Hawaiian “Aloha.”  the Balinese “jam sare” and Brazilian “jeito,” In Liberia, people greet each other with a big smile and a handshake that ends with the fingers making a snapping sound. It’s like two locals saying “hi” to each other. But the similarities end there. Visitors often say they’re living the good life. It’s like saying people in this Central American country take pleasure in basic enjoyments. Part of Costa Rican culture is spending time with family and friends. This helps overcome the stress that the busy lifestyle in many Asian and other American countries brings in. While some cultures celebrate accomplishments and status, Pura Vida runs deep and encourages a relaxed attitude over the non-stop go-getting state of mind in places like Tokyo and New York City. Though some elements of this lifestyle are found elsewhere, few places can wholly embody an attitude of unwinding by the minute like what takes place in Costa Rica.

Experiences

From sun, surf and beach hammocks to forest trails and waterfalls, costa rica has a little bit of everything….

pura vida lifestyles travel

A true marvel if not miracle of nature, the crescent shaped beach of Uvita cradles this warm water bay featuring the awe-inspiring ‘whale’s tail’, a stunning representation of the gentle giants’ anatomy remarkably etched into the pristine coastline. If this wasn’t enough, the tail is part of the Ballena National Marine Park which plays host to migrating humpback whales year-round!

For decades, Sarapiqui and Tortuguero have been birding hotspots – captivating beginner and expert alike. Keel-billed Toucans, Great Green Macaws, Wood Thrushes, Grey-necked Wood Rails, Sun bitterns and Violet Crowned Woodnymphs are just a few of the birds that inhabit the rainforest and reserves in the region. We work with a number of local ecolodges to take care of the details while you focus on the birds!

Caño Island is an amazing marine biological reserve located approximately 50 km from the shore with virgin blue waters making it the perfect tropical paradise for snorkelers and divers. Fantastic underwater visibility affords the opportunity to observe and swim alongside sea turtles, stingrays, manta rays, moray eels, barracudas, tuna, snapper, parrot fish, puffers, and more. Marine life is also abundant in the general outliers of the island and you can see white tipped reef sharks, and occasionally whale sharks and humpback whales.

Guanacaste harbours miles of pristine palm-fringed coastline producing some of the most consistent, forgiving and fun waves on the planet. Paired with warm waters year-round and world class surf schools, Costa Rica is the perfect place to take your first lesson or continue your chase for the ride of a lifetime. Your wave is waiting!

As the terrain of the northern highlands descends into the central plains so do the rivers, pouring out magnificent displays of power and beauty in the form of majestic waterfalls. From the famous falls of La Fortuna to the jaw-dropping del Toro, discover some of Costa Rica’s best-kept secrets with spectacular views from above and refreshing pools below…

The cloud forest of San Gerardo de Dota often plays second fiddle to the world famous Monteverde, however the most avid of bird watchers will tell you that this is the place to see some of Costa Rica’s finest feathered friends, including the Resplendent Quetzal! The region is less visited and less crowded than its northern neighbour making it ideal for the peace and quiet valued by birds and watchers alike.

Home to over 5000 species of plants, more than 300 species of birds, and over 100 species of mammals including deer, peccary, coatis, armadillos, anteaters, and sloths the famed Corcovado National Park is an absolute dream for nature lovers. Here you can encounter all four species of Costa Rican monkeys including howler, white face capuchin, spider and the endangered squirrel monkey, rarely seen together outside of Osa. Those who are patient, reverent, and a little lucky may encounter the elusive Baird's tapir or one of Corcovado's resident big cats: jaguarundi, margay, ocelot, puma or even a jaguar!

Meet with local cooks, learn about traditional ingredients and sample foods that represent the diversity of the culinary heritage of the region on this tour that will have you fall in love with the people and culture of Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast by way of your taste buds and belly!

Just south of the town of Manzanillo and stretching all the way down to the border of Panama is Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge. This postcard-worthy stretch of coast is a paradise of beaches, coves, islands, and an offshore coral reef backed by thick rainforest. Sea turtles (nesting between March and July), dolphins, manatees, and crocodiles can all be found at the reserve. With such rich underwater biodiversity, the Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge is considered by many to be the best snorkeling and diving spot on the Caribbean Coast.

The Golfo Dulce is one of only four tropical fjord-like estuaries in the whole world. These waters have been identified by National Geographic as one of the ocean’s 20 wildest places and recognized by Mission Blue as an exceptional ecosystem for marine biodiversity. Take a boat trip, paddle board, kayak, and snorkel in these amazing warm waters where dolphins and whales swim wild and free by day and at night algae glow creating one of the most incredible bioluminescence spectacles Earth can offer.

Guanacaste is known for its spectacular beaches, but some are harder to find than others. It’s time to wander off the beaten path on a quest to reveal some of these best kept secret shores. We’ve scoured the coastline to find a series of hidden gems, secluded and virtually untouched white sand bays and pristine inlets that are yours for taking if you’re up for a bit of adventure and exploration!

Costa Rica's beaches are home to massive nesting sea turtle populations. Come face-to-face with these ancient creatures as they return to the same beaches where they were born to lay their eggs or watch as hatchlings emerge from the sand to attempt their hazardous journey back to the ocean. These events are magical, awe-inspiring, and life-changing, an experience you won’t soon forget.

Hazy mist, trailing foliage, and the mysterious call of rare birds sounds like something from a fantasy or adventure film, but this dream world can be found in the cloud forests of Monteverde where the sky essentially comes down to the forest, enabling you to actually take a walk through the clouds.

Experience the whitewater magic of the Pacuare River as you discover the excitement of thrilling rapids coursing through rugged canyons and verdant tropical rainforests on one of the most exotic and scenic rivers in the world. This adrenaline-pumping excursion takes you through class-III and -IV rapids, past spectacular landscapes, under tumbling cascades, and all the way to the town of Siquirres.

Once again, the north Pacific coast of the country gets all the glory, while the southern shores await the avid explorer in search of uncrowded waves breaking along wild palm-fringed beaches. The towns of Dominical, Uvita, Matapalo all the way down to Pavones offer something for everyone whether you’re taking your first lesson or in search of the wave of a lifetime!

Yoga class in Costa Rica is unlike any other! With breath taking views of mountains and volcanoes set in the midst of tropical rain forest or on the most pristine beaches, classes are led by experienced instructors giving students an opportunity connect with breath, relax the body, open the mind and find balance so you can be ready for whatever your next adventure holds.

From the iconic Arenal and crater lake of Cerro Chato to prehistoric sulfur springs, steam vents, and boiling mud pots of Rincón de la Vieja along with the turquoise blue waters of Tenorio, follow the ring of fire through Costa Rica's Northern region as you come face to face with these geological giants.

A journey of unsurpassed beauty, jungle vegetation, and exploding whitewater, rafting on the Savegre is perfect for the adventuresome beginner and experienced rafter with Class II and III adrenaline-filled rapids. The Savegre River is a magnificent stretch of whitewater that begins its course by winding out of a sparsely inhabited valley in the mountains. Named one of the most pristine rivers in Central America, the Savegre is full of incredible scenery at every turn.

Best Gifts For Costa Ricans

T here are many reasons to travel to Costa Rica , but one of the best reasons is to meet and interact with Costa Ricans, often called ticos . Ticos are super laid-back ( unless they are driving or watching soccer), welcoming, and generous. The pura vida lifestyle reigns supreme here.

Whether reuniting with a host family from many years back, spending time with a driver or tour guide, wanting to spoil the maids and waiters at the resort, or volunteering, I’m often asked about the best gifts to take to Costa Rica to give to ticos.

In this post, I’ll break down some of the most common gift-giving occasions, and a few ideas for each occasion.

The key to taking a good gift is to know a bit about your audience. Don’t take a bag of socks to a wealthy family hosting you in the capital, for example.

Costa Ricans are as varied in income level as many Americans. Please don’t assume that everyone in Costa Rica is super poor. You can assume that your hosts will be very grateful for any gift you give.

Here’s a video of my convo with another Costa Rican expert on gift-giving in Costa Rica:

Gifts For Everyone

Coffee mugs.

Almost everyone who visits Costa Rica VERY soon realizes that coffee is a big deal. The ritual associated with the preparation and drinking of coffee is unique to the country, and ticos love to share the experience with visitors.

I often take along a Starbucks coffee mug from Denver or Colorado, to represent where we live. It’s a useful gift and a great conversation piece for long after you have left!

These mugs are sold at most stand-alone Starbucks locations, but sometimes you have to ask the barista for them as they keep them in back.

Check out this Traditional Costa Rican Coffee Recipe !

Most Costa Ricans love to enjoy a small drink ( trago) with friends, and this is one gift you can just get right at the Duty-Free shop when you land so you don’t have to pack anything extra.

Most popular drinks are Johnny Walker and Bailey’s Irish Cream. The local drinks are Ron Centenario and Cacique. There are tons of fun Costa Rican cocktails .

Now- ticos are not drunks, and not everyone drinks alcohol. So if you choose to bring this gift please be sensitive to how you present it. The host may not open the bottle in your presence either- this is not necessarily customary.

Nativity Scene

It is considered good luck to gift a Nativity scene to a family, and Nativities or pasitos as they are called in Costa Rica are displayed proudly in homes from November through February.

Learn more about Christmas In Costa Rica

Yeti and Kleen Kanteen ( especially this bottle ) are popular brands in Costa Rica right now, and I get huge compliments on my Corkcicle glasses when I am in Costa Rica.

It’s hard to keep drinks cold and so double-walled products are always a great bet. Plus they can be used for coffee and cold beverages- double score!

Gifts For Women

Lotions and perfumes.

Perfumes and scented lotions are very popular in Costa Rica, as well as hand sanitizers. When we visit our friends in Costa Rica, I will often take along various popular scents from Bath and Body Works or Victoria’s Secret and give them to the women who cook us amazing meals when we stop by their houses. They LOVE them!

Scented Candles

A great addition to any household!

Scarves and Handkerchiefs

It gets “cold” at night for ticas, and it is very fashionable to wear a scarf out and about. (This is probably not true in the beach areas.) It is also very in style to wear a silk handkerchief around one’s neck on special occasions.

Essential Oils

Essential oils and diffusers have become popular in Costa Rica just as they have in the US, and these are fun gifts! It’s relatively easy to get additional essential oils in Costa Rica to replenish too.

Gifts For Men

Lots of sun means men wear caps a lot in Costa Rica. Quiksilver , Billabong, and Under Armour are all popular, as well as any national sports team.

Portable Speakers

Music on the go is always fun, and the mini speakers are more expensive down there than in the US. This one looks awesome.

Mobile Phone Accessories

Pop sockets , cell phone wallets , wireless earbuds.

Related post: How To Use Your Cell Phone In Costa Rica

For some reason, these Columbia shirts are all the rage in Costa Rica for men. As are old Navy, Abercrombie and Gap t-shirts and sweatshirts.

Gifts For Children

Chocolate candies.

Several years ago when I was living in Costa Rica, I was in a dance troupe, and one of our fellow members spent some time in the U.S. When he returned, he brought to rehearsal all kinds of little Mars candy bars to share.

It wasn’t until that moment that I realized that American candy bars aren’t very common in Costa Rica. Now, I take them for all of the kids when we visit, and we parents get several moments of quiet to chat before the sugar high kicks in!

Paper is expensive in Costa Rica, especially school notebooks. Many students pick coffee or bag groceries in the summer in order to be able to afford their notebooks for school.

Because paper is a luxury, it is always fun to take along composition notebooks (the covers hold up well in the humidity), colored pens, crayons, and stickers for the kids to create with, and for the older teens to use at school. Cartoon character covers are especially popular! These look especially cute.

Coloring Books

Coloring and activity books are so cheap and abundant here, and in Costa Rica, they just- aren’t. This bundle for boys is great , and there’s a girl’s bundle too .

I am a huge puzzle fanatic, and I can rarely find puzzles in Costa Rica. This is a fun present for everyone! This puzzle looks perfect.

This is my most requested item when I ask people what I can bring them from the States. I am obsessed with these new little Lego sets.

Gifts For Teachers

Teachers in Costa Rica are middle class- they earn a great living and can, for the most part, purchase the things that they want and need. The only difference is that there are high tariffs (taxes) on imports to Costa Rica, so anything not fabricated in Costa Rica is going to be a much higher price than in the States.

My favorite idea is this laptop bag with pencil case.

Gifts For Service Projects

If you are heading to Costa Rica for missions or service trips, you might be interacting with lower-income ticos. You may or may not feel comfortable giving more extravagant gifts to those living in poverty. There are still several special and important gifts that you can give that are useful for lower-income ticos.

For some odd reason, socks are very expensive in Costa Rica- more expensive than in the U.S. (A painful realization for me after my suitcase got stolen out of a rental car and I was left with only the clothes on my back.)

I will often take packs of nice athletic socks for the people I am serving. Socks are great because they are useful, and pretty much one-size-fits-all (not always as easy to take along shirts or pants if you don’t know the sizes of the people you will work with.)

Small Kitchen Appliances

Kitchen appliances are so much more expensive in Costa Rica, and they are a vital tool for low-income families who don’t eat out very often. The electric current in Costa Rica is the same as US, so you don’t need to worry about an electrical converter. Here are a few of the most requested items for the kitchen:

  • Rice cooker – this is my absolute favorite
  • Coffee pot – this one is easy to pack, and we have had ours for 15 years with no problems.
  • Blender – this one is a perfect option
  • Cutting boards – plastic is best due to climate

Personal items

Shampoo, deodorant, lotions, razors, toothbrushes, and toothpaste.
