When it comes to crowds, weather, and costs, May is one of the best months to visit Hawaii. The prices are lower, and the crowds are smaller than in peak season, making it an excellent time for budget travelers. And with plenty of activities and cultural events occurring, there’s something for everyone! 

With that said, don’t hesitate to schedule your dream vacation in May. You’ll have a blast!

Reasons to Go to Hawaii in May

• Great weather: May marks the beginning of Hawaii’s summer season. The weather is sunny and warm all month long, making it perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing. 
• Smaller crowds/costs: The beaches are also less crowded in May than during June and July. And with lower hotel prices and fewer crowds, you can take advantage of the best deals and experiences on the islands.

May can be a great time to visit Hawaii, but it’s not for everyone.

• Can be somewhat crowded: If you’re looking for a more secluded getaway, the islands may be too busy this month. January is one of the least crowded months to visit, so you may prefer a winter trip . And if you’re trying to save money on lodging, September is typically even cheaper.

Is Hawaii in May Nice: Weather Data

Since it’s in the tropics, Hawaii only has two seasons compared to the four you find in the mainland US. May is the beginning of the summer season, which lasts until October.

You can expect mild, pleasant weather on your visit, so you’ll be able to take advantage of all the activities Hawaii has to offer. Temperatures will range from highs in the low-80s (Fahrenheit) during the day and lows in the mid-70s at night.

The rainiest part of the year is typically between November and April, so you can expect dryer conditions in May. Rainfall does vary on different islands, so double-check your destination before you go and read more about which islands are the wettest below.

Is Hawaii in May Rainy?

Winter is Hawaii’s rainiest season. By May, the showers are beginning to subside. The Hawaiian Islands receive an average of 1.295 inches of rain this month.

Here’s a look at four popular destinations and how they compare in terms of rainfall.

As you can see, you’re most likely to encounter raindrops in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. If you want to stay as dry as possible, plan on staying in Kihei, Maui . (We highly recommend the Kihei Ali’i Kai .)

And while no month is guaranteed to be rain-free in Hawaii, if you really want sunshine during your visit, July, August, and September are typically the driest months of the year. This graph shows the average rain for those four locations throughout the year: 

When talking about rainfall, you’ve got to remember that each island has different sides, and the weather can vary quite a bit based on which part you’re visiting. The north and east sides tend to get more rain than the south and west, so if you’re worried about showers spoiling your vacation, try staying on the island’s leeward side.

How Warm Is It in Hawaii in May?

As a tropical climate, Hawaii’s temperatures don’t swing as drastically as in other places. In May, you can expect mild temperatures with highs in the low-80s (Fahrenheit) and lows in the low-70s.

The hottest place to be is in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Its average temperature in May is 84 degrees. But it drops to 72 at night, giving it the most temperature variation.

So make sure you pack layers if you’re heading to Hawaii in May, especially if you’re headed up Haleakala on Maui, Mauna Kea on the Big Island, or to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park! As you probably guessed, May isn’t the warmest month in the state. That award goes to August and September. These months mark the end of summer, and the temperature rises to its highest average. 

If you prefer cooler temperatures, you’ll want to plan your visit for winter. February and March offer some of the chilliest days of the year.

Can You Swim in Hawaii in May?

One of the highlights of a Hawaiian vacation is swimming in the beautiful Pacific Ocean. But is the ocean safe to swim in during May?

The answer is yes! The water temperature off Hawaii’s coast averages about 77 degrees Fahrenheit in May, so swimming will be quite comfortable. Plus, there will usually be calm waters and good waves thanks to the trade winds that blow throughout the area.

What Are the Ocean Conditions Like in May?

Remember that the ocean can be unpredictable, so you should always check the beach conditions before going in. Lifeguards use flags to indicate the safety of the waters, so pay attention to them when you’re out and about.

Also, a quick note about swells. The winter months bring large waves to the islands due to storms in the North Pacific. But these waves have usually calmed down by May, and you can expect smaller swells. The rougher areas are generally on the southern and western shores of the islands.

When is Hawaii Hurricane Season?

Hurricane season in Hawaii runs from June through November. So you should only experience hurricanes if you come within these months. That makes May a great time to visit if you want to minimize your risks of tropical storms. 

But the risks are fairly low even if you journey to Hawaii during hurricane season. The last time a major hurricane made landfall in the state was in 1992. 

Although it’s unlikely that a  devastating storm will land in Hawaii while you’re there, it’s always good to be prepared. Check the National Weather Service website for forecasts and advisories during your travels.

How Busy is Hawaii in May?

Are you a crowd-lover or a crowd-loather? If you’re the latter, May is an excellent time to visit Hawaii! And while the number of visitors still hasn’t returned to pre-pandemic levels, the 2022 data shows that May still fell behind the historically popular months of July, June, and December.

In May of 2022, 774,144 tourists traveled to Hawaii. The average daily census was 221,727. Compared to the 277,444 average in July, the beaches and trails will be much less crowded in May.

Which Hawaiian Islands Are the Busiest in May?

Of course, not all islands generate the same number of tourists. In May, Molokai and Lanai were the least popular islands. Oahu was in the top spot, with over 416,000 people visiting.

If you’re looking for lots of Hawaiian adventure with minimal foot traffic, Kauai and the Big Island might be your ideal destination. 

But if you have your heart set on staying on Oahu , try planning a January visit. After the holiday crowds subside, the number of visitors to this island drops significantly. This graph shows what you can expect crowd-wise during each month of the year. 

Is Hawaii Cheaper in May? 

If you’re trying to travel on a budget , May is a great time to visit Hawaii. Across the state, the average hotel rate was $340.20 in May. That’s $100 cheaper than the peak rates you’ll find in December.

And if you’re willing to stay in a midscale or economy hotel, nightly averages drop down to just over $200 a night in May. That’s almost the lowest rate you can get all year.

But when it comes to hotels, you know what they say about location. Where you stay will have a huge impact on the price of your stay. For example, the luxury resort community of Wailea, Maui , averages $832.05 per night in May. That’s nearly twice as expensive as the average upscale hotel in Maui County.

For even more budget-friendly accommodations, Oahu is a good choice. The average hotel on that island runs $246.19 in May, while you can get midscale or economy class rooms for under $150 a night. If you really want to get the most of out of your hotel stay in Hawaii book it with points .

If you’re planning a trip to Hawaii in May, it’s important to pack for warm and humid weather. Here are some essential items to consider packing:

Pack plenty of shorts, t-shirts, and sundresses. Hawaii’s temperature in May typically ranges from the low 70s to mid-80s°F so you’ll want to dress for warm weather.

Hawaii in May: Everything You Need to Know About Weather, Events, Costs, and More

After April, May is one of the best times to visit this beautiful archipelago. The rainy weather is pretty much over, so you’ll have warm and sunny days to look forward to. Plus, hotel prices and airfare rates are down, and there are usually fewer tourists in May in Hawaii since summer break begins in June and July. The variety of annual festivals, events, and outdoor activities also make this a good time to travel to Hawaii.

May Weather in Hawaii

When people think of spring travel, they mostly think of the rainy season which can put a damper on the whole experience. The good news is, this is not the case with Hawaii. While May marks the beginning of spring in Hawaii, rain showers are rare during this time. The days are full of warm sunshine and the nights are relatively cooler.

The average temperatures during evenings can reach the low 70s, nothing a light sweater or long sleeve shirt can’t handle.

Average Temperatures

Being outside in May in Hawaii – no matter which island you’re on – always feels comfortable throughout the day. Daytime temperatures average between 80°F to 85°F, while they can dip down to 70°F-71°F at night.

Water Temperatures

With sea temperatures ranging from 76°F to 79°F, swimming, snorkeling, and paddling are not only pleasant but super fun. The water this time is so comfortable you won’t want to get out!

Ocean Conditions 

After rainy and somewhat cloudy weather in March and April, the month of May feels like a blessing. The sky is clear and so is the sea. The ocean swells start to tone down in May, even on the north shores where big winter swells attract pro surfers. So, if you’re traveling with children or you’re not as experienced at swimming, the calm ocean is perfect for you to play around in.

Cost to Visit Hawaii in May

Compared to June and July, May sees cheaper prices in terms of hotels, flights, and car rentals. This rate does rise a bit over the Memorial Day weekend but only slightly.

Except for the Memorial Day weekend, you can find a round trip ticket to Hawaii for $460 – $875, depending on whether you’re flying from the east coast or the west coast. Flights from east coast cities (like New York City) are much more expensive than flights from west coast cities (like San Francisco).

Accommodations

The average cost of hotels during May is about $170-$250 per night. Of course, if you’re willing to do without a plethora of amenities to save money, you can rent an Airbnb or Vrbo for $80 to $100 per night. Hostels, dorm rooms, and even RV rentals or camper vans are even cheaper options.

Expect to pay around $100 per day for a rental car on almost every island. Parking fees, gas, and taxes will bump this price up even higher.

Best Times to Book Your May Vacation

May is not considered peak season in Hawaii, so you can get away with last-minute bookings. And by “last-minute”, we mean 15-21 days before your departure. That being said, it’s always best to book as much in advance as possible.

Is May Crowded in Hawaii?

No, but there are a couple of exceptions. May is actually one of the least crowded months in Hawaii, but there are two events that attract quite a crowd. One is Memorial Day weekend and the other is Golden Week, which usually falls in the first week of May. This is a major Japanese event where four of their national holidays occur in the same week.

With Hawaii’s proximity to Japan, a lot of these folks come to the islands to celebrate their short vacation. Waikiki (Oahu) tends to receive most of this crowd.

You can avoid the crowds by scheduling your trip for the second or third week of May.

Events in May

There’s a lot happening in Hawaii in May:

May 1 st is Lei Day in Hawaii and it’s celebrated across all islands. Locals, as well as visitors, take to the streets wearing colorful leis made from flowers, leaves, vines, fern, foliage, shells, and other adornments. On Oahu, a big event is held at Kapiolani Park to celebrate the occasion with a lei contest, live performances, music, and more. 

May Day Waikiki is another great event on May 1 st that commemorates Waikiki as it was in the days gone by. There are food booths, games, free canoe rides, and other activities.

If you’re in Hawaii on Memorial Day, head over to the Lantern Floating Ceremony at Ala Moana Beach to pay respect to those who lost their lives. Thousands of people gather at this beach with beautiful lit lanterns and release them out into the Pacific Ocean. It’s an enchanting but sober ceremony.

The Big Island

The Hamakua Harvest Annual Farm Festival is the place to go if you’re interested in family-friendly activities and educational events about agriculture. More than 40 local food vendors showcase the best farm-to-table cuisine during the event and you get the opportunity to relish it all.

Coffee lovers should visit the Ka’u Coffee Festival to get a taste of the unique coffee farms located on the Big Island .

As a part of the Golden Week celebrations, Maui Matsuri cultural festival is held in the first week of May to offer a glimpse into Japanese culture. There is authentic food, arts and crafts, live entertainment, and a ton of interesting games for children.

The Seabury Hall Crafts Fair is held every year the day before Mother’s Day, where over 100 local craftsmen get together to share their arts, wares, and other handmade treasures.

Water Activities 

We don’t need to tell you the sheer number of opportunities you have to swim, snorkel, bodyboard, and kayak throughout the islands. But if you want to do something unique, try sailing the Napali Coast in Kauai . The Napali Coast State Wilderness Park is spread over 6,000 acres and, surprisingly, is still very much untouched. 

There are no roads that access this park directly, so you’ll either have to take a boat tour or hike an 11-mile rugged trail. With a boat tour, you can enjoy the striking view of the Napali cliffs which are about 4,000 feet above the beach. You’ll also get to see the natural arches, coastal caves, and waterfalls from the aforementioned boat tour.

Outdoor Activities

The things you can do in Hawaii are nearly endless – you’ve got sightseeing, hiking, biking, fire dancers, nightclubs, chilling in a hammock, and so much more. For the adventurer inside you, consider skydiving on the north shore of Oahu . There’s something about jumping out of an airplane over a gorgeous island in the Pacific Ocean that you’ll remember for the rest of your life.

Other Activities Worth Mentioning

No trip to Hawaii is complete without a visit to the Polynesian Cultural Center . The center has showcased the unique Hawaiian and Polynesian culture for over 50 years via a series of interactive displays and shows. Your visit will include a trip to six island villages where you’ll get to learn incredibly cool things like how to drum Tahitian-style, do the Maori war dance, shimmy up a coconut tree, and more. You can also get a temporary Fijian tattoo!

We highly recommend attending the Polynesian Cultural Center Luau that’s held every day from 12:45 pm to 5:30 pm. Ticket prices range from $69.95 to $242.95.

Is May a good time to go to Hawaii?

Absolutely. The different islands and their varying microclimates mean you can consider Hawaii at any time of the year. But April and May are one of our favorite times due to fewer visitors and affordable prices all around.

Is it rainy season in Hawaii in May?

No. May does receive odd showers, however, but they are mostly at night. There won’t be any long showers during the day to disrupt your fun.

What is the cheapest island to visit in May?

Oahu tends to be the least expensive Hawaiian Island – not only in May but throughout the year. Maui, on the other hand, is the most expensive.

What is the least visited island in Hawaii?

Both Lanai and Molokai attract only a fraction of all the visitors that flock to the archipelago each year. Molokai doesn’t have any resorts and it’s mostly rural, while Lanai has a handful of exclusive luxury resorts. Other than that, the Big Island is considered less touristy compared to Oahu, Maui, and Kauai.

Hawaii in May is a real treat. The weather is perfect and the crowds are lessened after Memorial Day visitors head back home. You’ll find plenty of things to do and will surely have a blast!

Each Hawaiian Island is a magical destination with so many amazing things to see. The most important thing to plan your vacation is to decide what you want from the experience. The best time to visit Hawaii for good weather, smaller crowds, deals and more

So you want to visit Hawaii? Understandable — it's a great place.

However, unless you're booking a spontaneous flight deal (and those do happen), you'll probably want to plan to ensure you're traveling at the best time for your particular dream trip.

Whether you're looking for dry, idyllic weather, perfect whale watching season, or the cheapest time to book a Hawaiian hotel room, consider this your definitive guide to planning a perfect trip to Hawaii.

The best time to visit Hawaii for good weather

Generally, the best weather in Hawaii is in June, July and September. This is when travelers can expect the least amount of rain along with warmer water temperatures.

However, Hawaii isn't a true four seasons state and it has pretty great weather year-round. So if traveling during June, July or September isn't in the cards, you're still probably fine as there's really no bad time to go. I just got back from a trip in mid-November and the weather was great. It was warm enough to swim in the ocean without being too hot lying in the sun.

Hawaii has a tropical climate, with temperatures generally staying between 83 and 88 degrees all year long.

You should check local weather, though, as conditions in some parts of the Islands are wetter than others depending on if you are staying on the windward or leeward sides of each island.

Kauai, for instance, gets a lot of rain on the northern side of the island compared to the southern side (which does lead to some pretty great rainbows). Even if the forecast calls for rain, however, the rain tends to come in short bursts and doesn't last long.

Best time to visit Hawaii to avoid crowds

The peak tourism season in Hawaii typically starts in the middle of December and continues until the end of March or mid-April, depending on the timing of spring break for major parts of the U.S.

The less busy season stretches from the middle of April until mid-June, when most schools are out of the summer and then resumes from September until crowds tick up before the holidays. Shoulder season is a great time to visit. The huge crowds are gone, prices are lower and you can have more of the beach to yourself. Even in busy spots like Honolulu, you'll have more breathing room after Labor Day and before Thanksgiving.

July and August, while not considered Hawaii's busiest season, still tend to draw decent crowds — and are especially popular with vacationing families.

Cheapest months to visit Hawaii

Traveling to Hawaii is usually priciest during peak season, so if you want to save, wait until the off-peak or shoulder seasons.

The shoulder seasons in Hawaii run from late March through the beginning of May, and from September until Thanksgiving. However, spring break and the beginning of September can yield high traffic and higher prices, too, so look carefully before booking.

Historical data from the travel booking site Skyscanner shows airfare is at its most expensive during the winter, specifically in January. At this time of year, average long-haul flight prices can exceed $1,400.

However, prices can plummet during the shoulder seasons or times that cushion peak periods, such as late November and early March. This past September, we saw a fare war develop with prices as low as $62 one-way to Hawaii. This is especially true if you are coming from the western half of the U.S. Keep an eye on TPG deal alerts , where we regularly cover sales to Hawaii.

We looked at historical data, and generally, the most expensive month for a room in Honolulu is January, with the least expensive month being April. Analysts tell TPG it's best to book as early as possible for the best rates in the off-season. We're told that many tourists are booking as close in as a week before arrival, and the best deals will be had as far out as possible. It pays to plan ahead.

Of course, you may have more flexibility when you cash in your points and miles — though hotel award rates tend to shift with peak and off-peak seasons, too. Also, award flight availability is often directly tied to demand.

Best time to travel to Hawaii to surf

Only four of the islands in the Hawaiian archipelago are suitable for surfing year-round: Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island. As for when and where you'd like to surf, well, that depends entirely on your skill level.

The waves follow a somewhat consistent schedule. In the winter, for example, surfers can find serious swells off an island's north coast, while the south coast experiences calmer seas. During the summer, the opposite is true.

So, for advanced surfers, the winter season, or ho'oilo, which runs from mid-November to early February, is when you should look out for big wave surfing competitions on the North Shore of Oahu, also known as the "Seven Mile Miracle."

On the Big Island, surf enthusiasts should check out La'aloa Bay and Honoli'i Beach Park.

For novice surfers, you'll want to spend more time on the island's southern coasts in the winter. In Maui, beaches in Kaanapali, Lahaina and Kihei deliver just-right waves for beginners to get their feet wet.

Best time for whale watching in Hawaii

The best time to go whale watching

Whales migrate to Hawaii in pods of roughly 1,000 between late December and early April, making Maui and the Kohala Coast of the Big Island two of the best places on Earth to spot the giants. Note that sometimes whales show up as early as November, so you could get lucky if you travel during shoulder season.

The best time to see turtles

If you're interested in spotting Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu), they're plentiful year-round in Maui, on the Big Island of Hawaii, Kaui and on Oahu. One of the most famous spots for turtle-spotting is on Ho'okipa Beach in Maui.

Visit in the summer, during nesting season, to increase your odds. You'll even find sea turtles on some hotel grounds. I was able to get up close and personal with turtles on a trip to the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Big Island. At that hotel, they hang out in the hotel's lagoon.

Many vendors sell turtle snorkeling adventures and I've had great luck with two separate snorkeling trips in Hawaii.

A warning, though: please don't get too close. People are asked to give the turtles at least ten feet of space and never touch them. Human touch can spread bacteria to turtles, which can lead to starvation for the creature. Remember that green sea turtles are listed as an endangered species.

Hawaii has five of the seven species of sea turtles in the world, but green sea turtles are the most common.

When to visit Hawaii for events

Summer events.

In the summer, on the third weekend of July, visitors can attend the Prince Lot Hula Festival, Hawaii's largest non-competitive hula event.

Fall events

The Hawaii Food & Wine Festival is a major draw for foodies, featuring an extensive lineup of dinners, parties, cooking classes and more taking place in October and November of 2024 on three different islands – Hawaii, Maui and Oahu.

In September, travelers can attend the Aloha Festivals in Waikiki, which feature arts and crafts, food and performance stages. Don't forget the floral parade.

Winter events

This is prime season for surfing competitions, including the Vans Triple Crown of surfing on the North Shore of Oahu.

Spring events

Heading to Hawaii in the springtime? Consider the Honolulu Festival in March or the Lantern Floating Festival, held on Memorial Day yearly in Ala Moana Beach Park in Honolulu.

Worst time to visit Hawaii?

This is kind of a trick question, as there is really no bad time to visit Hawaii. You'll find warm weather and sunshine most of the year. Even when it does rain, it is often just for a few minutes.

That said, some locals say December is the worst time of the year because of the extra crowds, extra costs, and the increased rain shower odds. But even with all that, I'd trade Northeast winter weather for that any time of the year.

Wondering when is the best time to visit Maui? If you've already narrowed down your choices of islands and Maui is the winner, you're probably wondering what time of year to visit the island.

The best time to visit Maui, taking into consideration the weather, demand for accommodations, and how crowded, or not, the island is, are the month(s) of April, May, August, September, and early October. Some call these Maui's 'off-season periods' or the 'shoulder months.' If you're coming specifically to see the whales, a popular attraction on Maui in particular, try to visit in January near their peak migration period.

What to Expect on Maui in 2024

Post-pandemic inflation will continue to  impact flight costs, the costs associated with rental vehicles,  and  potentially Maui accommodation rates  due to increases in local electricity costs (Hawaii generates a significant amount of its electricity from petroleum fuels). Already we've seen 30-40% increases in fares over pre-pandemic (2019) rates on Maui. 

The Maui Wildfires that occurred in August 2023 also have had a devastating effect on local tourism in Maui; occupancy rates are hovering well below their average as of late 2023. If you're looking to avoid the crowds, now is the time to visit Maui!

Visiting Hawaii within the next few years, between 2024 and 2025, means you'll avoid the increased crowds projected to return by 2026 and beyond. So, if you're visiting Maui soon, you've selected a great time!

Please remember to be mindful and respectful of Maui residents as they continue to heal from the August 2023 wildfires.

Maui Weather & Climate

Weather-wise, you'll be happy to know that Maui's warm tropical climate is fairly consistent year-round with daytime highs from 75-85°F (23-29°C) during the summer and winter, respectively. At the many coastal resorts that dot the island at sea level, temperatures rarely dip below 60°F (15°C) during the coldest of winter. The weather on Maui is typically great for visitors year-round. The only time Maui's weather is unpleasant is if a winter storm blankets the island with clouds and rain, but those are infrequent and shouldn't be too much of a concern.

The majority of the rain that Maui receives falls in the winter months, from November through March. Rain showers are typically short and are quickly followed by more sunshine, and, if you're lucky, rainbows. Rainbows are always said to be a sign of good luck in the islands, meaning you'll return one day if you spot one.

Hurricane Season

Hurricane and tropical storms are historically rare events on Maui, but it’s still important to be prepared for storms if you visit during Hawaii hurricane season  - June through November. The last few years have seen increased activity around the islands, so it’s important to monitor accordingly when planning and taking your trip to Maui.

If you're looking for the best deals on accommodations, spring and fall are the cheapest months to visit the island because demand is down. This means the island is less crowded as well, which is another benefit of visiting during these months. Our personal preference is April - May .

If you plan to come during the holidays, especially Christmas, you can typically expect large crowds of people - and prices will reflect the increased demand. Learn more on our Where to Stay on Maui article.

We've included the dates and months that most Maui events are typically held below, but please be aware that currently, things are subject to change.

Visiting Maui in January, February, or March

These winter months will be a bit cooler on Maui, and rainstorms are not uncommon during this time of year, especially on the windward (northeast) side of the island. One positive to extra precipitation is that this rain typically enhances the Road to Hana waterfalls. This is also the best time for Whale Watching ; Maui has some of the best opportunities for whale watching in the entire state. Many visitors specifically pick Maui during this time of year because they hope to catch a glimpse of the majestic creatures that call the warm, sheltered waters near Maui home- the humpback whales. Each January - March, they migrate down from Alaskan waters to mate, calve, and birth their young.

• PGA Tour Sentry Tournament of Champions (January) - Each year, visitors will find some of the best golfers in the world taking part in the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Kapalua.

Visiting Maui in April, May, or June

These Spring months are in our opinion, the best months to visit Maui . The weather is ideal, crowds are lower than during the summer months, and pricing on accommodations and flights are often the lowest you’ll find all year. Crowds and temperatures will both tick upwards toward the start of June.

• East Maui Taro Festival (April) - Celebrate taro, one of Hawaii’s most important crops, with a farmers market, poi pounding, music, food, art, and more.
• Maui Steel Guitar Festival (May/October) -  This free, three-day festival includes a series of performances, presentations, instructional workshops, and more.
• Maui Onion Festival (May)
• Maui Film Festival (June-July) - Typically in late June. This unique festival attracts movie fans globally. Visitors can attend an open-air film festival at the Wailea Resort, complete with both world-class films and plenty of celebrity guests.
• Kapalua Wine & Food Festival (June)- The Kapalua Wine & Food Festival features wine tastings, seminars, cooking demonstrations, and local entertainment.

Visiting Maui in July, August, or September

The summer months of July and early August will be the warmest and some of the busiest on Maui. Families often visit during this portion of the year because school is out on most of the mainland. September, by contrast, is a great time to visit if you want to avoid crowds.

Visiting Maui in October, November, or December

The months leading into fall, specifically October and early November, can be a good time to visit . Prices are lower than in peak periods, demand is down, and the weather is often cooperative until mid-November, when it can begin to get wetter again. Most of December also fits this slower trend, except for the weeks around Christmas and New Year; they can be exceptionally busy on Maui, and prices and rates will reflect the increased demand. Avoid the holidays if you're looking to save money and skip the crowds.

Most people think that “Hawaii” and “budget” don’t belong in the same sentence. After all, it’s supposed to be a splurge to visit a gorgeous tropical paradise… right?

We’re here to tell you that traveling to Hawaii on a budget is possible and can be even more rewarding than what the brochures from expensive resorts show you. There are so many opportunities for how to do Hawaii on a budget in every category – from airfares to discount accommodations in Hawaii to saving money on activities. Keep reading for our best tips to save money on a trip to Hawaii.

Trying to plan a Hawaii vacation on a budget? Make sure you don’t blow it before your feet even touch the sand! If you’re traveling from mainland US to Hawaii, there’s a very good chance that you can score an awesome deal on your airfare to Hawaii and there are lots of ways to do it. Read on for insider tips on how to go to Hawaii on a budget.

First, be flexible about your dates and which island you visit – within reason. Since airfare and lodging are the two biggest components of your Hawaii trip cost, you’ll want to balance those two to minimize your costs. Second, weigh the many options you have for using cash or points to book those plane tickets. Here are just a few ways to save money on airfare to Hawaii:

Find the cheapest airfare for cash payment

Sometimes the simplest thing to do is pay cash for a plane ticket, and with the great deals you can often find from America’s west coast it just might make sense. The first place to start your search is on Skyscanner .

We love using Skyscanner to find flights because it allows us to reflect our total flexibility – we can allow nearby airports on both ends and search for whole months at a time to land the best rate. Even if you don’t end up paying cash, it’s always important to know the going rate for flights when evaluating whether or not an award redemption is worthwhile.

Look for special deals

In early 2019 Southwest launched their much-anticipated service to Hawaii. Introductory fares were as low as $49 each way from select airports and eligible for Companion Pass! Now fares have settled in higher, but still cheaper than plenty of mainline carriers. Southwest’s Companion Pass only requires that you pay taxes, so it can be a really great deal. The fastest way to earn your companion pass is by opening a Southwest credit card – even faster if you open a personal card and a business card.

The catch is that they don’t have an extensive route map if you live outside of the West Coast: currently they only offer non-stop service from California, Phoenix and Las Vegas to Hawaii, with the most extensive service to Oahu in Maui . Some US cities also get flights to Kauai and Big Island . There are also inter-island flights, but it’s definitely worth comparing prices versus local carrier Mokulele Airlines to find the cheapest option.

Still and all, the Companion Pass is such an amazing value that I recently opened two Southwest credit cards in anticipation of a return visit to Hawaii. I only have to pay $5.60 to bring another family member with me! See the latest Southwest credit card promotions to get your Companion Pass.

Many frequent flyers have heard of Southwest’s Companion Pass that you can earn through credit card sign up bonuses , but did you know that Alaska Airlines offers a similar one too? Alaska’s is a little different (only one per year and generally $99 per companion ticket plus taxes, but the base fare is often waived in the first year with promotions) but Alaska Airlines has tons of flights to Hawaii ! You can earn one with an Alaska Airlines credit card .

And it’s not one of those gimmicks where you have to pay an exorbitant price for the first ticket in order to use a companion fare on the second one (as with some old Amex promotions), you can just buy any regular ticket on the website. Especially for west coasters who already have access to bargain plane tickets to the Aloha State, this might be one the cheapest way to travel to Hawaii.

Book with frequent flyer miles

Obviously the cheapest way to go to Hawaii is not to pay for it! When your friends ask you how to go do Hawaii on a budget, this is usually the first trick you’ll want to tell them about. “Free” is the cheapest way to get to Hawaii and one we’ve taken advantage of many times.

We recommend targeting at least 2 cents per mile, but sometimes it makes sense to redeem for as little as 1.5 cents per mile if you really don’t want to spend the money out of pocket (after all, if you’re buying four plane tickets to pretty much anywhere you’re looking at a minimum of a thousand dollars). While many airlines now offer dynamic (= more expensive) point redemptions, here are the major airline baseline award redemptions for from the continental US to Hawaii as of October 2022 (economy class for us, folks):

American Airlines – 45,000 peak; 40,000 off-peak

United Airlines – 45,000

Delta Airlines – 45,000

Alaska Airlines – 40,000

British Airways – 26,000 from west coast , 51,500 from east coast (operated by AA)

From the chart above, it’s clear where the value in frequent flyer tickets to Hawaii lies. Alaska Airlines and sometimes British Airways can offer far better value than the mainline US carriers. British Airways offers a distance-based award chart, so passengers coming from the west coast only need 26,000 miles for a round trip, while east coasters would need a whopping 51,500 miles!

Ok, so how can you earn enough British Airways Avios points as an American? Simple: open up a Chase Sapphire Preferred , Chase Sapphire Reserve or Chase Ink Business Preferred card and once your sign-up bonus hits, do an instant transfer to your Executive Club account! Then redeem here through your account BA account. As of August 2023, the Sapphire Preferred sign up bonus is 60,000 points as is the Chase Sapphire Reserve sign up bonus , while small business owners get a 100,000 point sign up bonus with the Ink Business Preferred. That’s almost enough to get a family to Hawaii and back from the West Coast. You can also follow our lead and get both personal and business cards for each adult in the family cards to really juice up your award travel options.

Southwest’s frequent flyer redemption is fare-based so it varies a ton, but you can combine it with your Companion Pass discussed above to get two tickets to Hawaii for just the miles you’d need for one ticket. If you can find an affordable time of year using their low fare calendar, it’s a dynamite option to fly to Hawaii for cheap. Apply for a Southwest credit card here to start earning your Companion Pass. If you also have the Chase cards I mentioned above, know that you can transfer those Ultimate Rewards points to Southwest as well if you’re a little short.

If you’re in a city with lots of United flights, the most straightforward option might be to grab a United Mileage Plus Explorer credit card . The usual fee is $95 per year (though sometimes the first year fee is waived) and it comes with 50,000 bonus miles – enough to cover your ticket. We love that it includes free checked baggage when you use the card, even if you’re just covering taxes on an award ticket redemption, and you’ll get two passes to the United Club lounge. We carry this card and use it whenever we’re booking United flights.

Redeem Chase Ultimate Reward Points

Wondering how to go to Hawaii on the cheap? The final way to save money on plane tickets to Hawaii is actually how we picked up three of our four tickets on one trip to Hawaii. Since we’ve accumulated a ton of Chase Ultimate Rewards points through our Sapphire Preferred , Sapphire Reserve and Ink Business Preferred cards, we’ve sometimes taken advantage of their flexibility to buy our tickets.

One of our favorite features of Ultimate Rewards points is that you can redeem them for almost any travel expense through the portal; your redemption rate is 1-1.25 cents per point with most Chase cards and 1.5 cents per point if you have the Sapphire Reserve card (even if the points were earned on a different Chase card and transferred or pooled).

In our case tickets on Alaska were $445 each if purchased with cash, so we redeemed almost exactly 30,000 points for each. Ultimate Rewards points do not transfer to Alaska Airlines, but by purchasing through the portal we had no out of pocket expense – not even taxes. Pretty sweet!

Hopefully we’ve gotten you to Hawaii without putting too big of a dent in your wallet. The other huge chunk of the cost of a Hawaii vacation is accommodation. If you really want to plan a budget trip to Hawaii, consider a home exchange.

Vacation Rentals in Hawaii

Vacation rentals can be a great option in Hawaii, but it’s important to know what you’re getting in to. In June 2019, the mayor of Honolulu enacted strict limits on unhosted short-term vacation rentals on Oahu – essentially stifling the market for Airbnb on Oahu outside of designated tourist zones like Waikiki, Ko Olina and Turtle Bay. Newer restrictions are even tougher.

Other areas will still have some vacation rentals available, but limited in number and they have to be licensed. Likewise, other parts of Hawaii have limits on short-term rentals. Vacation rentals can be one of the best options for how to do Hawaii on the cheap, but check listings carefully!

If you find an awesome legal rental in Hawaii, that can be a great way to stay! You’ll be able to save money on groceries, parking and more while also enjoying a different kind of feel.

Here are some great options to consider for each island (though “cheap” is a relative term and varies somewhat by island):

Hotels in Hawaii

Would you rather just stay in a hotel in Hawaii? There are so many to choose from, even if you’re planning a trip to Hawaii on a budget!

The cheapest way to stay at a hotel in Hawaii is for free, obviously. We recently grabbed a World of Hyatt credit card so that we can use the sign-up bonus for an upcoming trip to Kauai and Maui! While there are tons of hotel loyalty programs out there, Hyatt has the most generous award chart and often requires only half as many points per night as competitors like Marriott and Hilton. In addition, award stays pay no resort fee and still count toward achieving elite status. We really love the Hyatt program!

If that all sounds great, I have even better news for you. The Chase Sapphire Preferred , Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Ink Business Preferred cards credit cards that our family uses can transfer their points to Hyatt as well! Obviously you need to use your credit cards responsibly and pay the balances every month, but if you’re strategic about your sign up bonuses you can land a mostly free trip to paradise by combining one of the airline programs I mentioned above with the Hyatt hotel program.

Another budget-friendly hotel option for Hawaii is to try to look for ones that offer a kitchen and laundry to avoid pricey meals out and laundry services. You’ll still get the resort amenities like beautiful pools, on-site restaurants and quality staffing. Check out these great options on each island:

Home Exchange in Hawaii

There are so many reasons why we love home exchange, and a few that are extremely relevant to planning a Hawaii family vacation on a budget.

First, your cash expense to do a home exchange in Hawaii will be less than one night in a hotel .

Second, having a real home with a kitchen means you can avoid pricey restaurant meals – and they sure are pricey in Hawaii!

Third, being away from the main tourist areas means almost everything will be less expensive (not to mention less crowded) – groceries are cheaper, our long-term Home Exchange house on Oahu had its own parking and the house even came stocked with boogie boards and snorkel gear so that we didn’t have to rent.

Beyond the economics, doing a home exchange in Hawaii had other amazing benefits. Everyone had plenty of space to stretch out. We had our own laundry facilities. We hung out at “locals only” spots rather than the crowded tourist beaches. There was a second fridge for all our Costco supplies. Oh, and we even had enough space that both grandmas came to join us for a few weeks during our slow travel on Oahu! Want more tips for planning a multigenerational vacation ?

Camping in Hawaii and RV in Hawaii

Another option for the truly budget-minded is camping on Hawaii. Every island has some wonderful, gorgeous places to pitch your tent though the amenities vary tremendously by site. Check out this helpful roundup of where to camp on Kauai .

If you want to combine your accommodations and your transportation, consider renting an RV in Hawaii . There are tons of beautiful campgrounds on every island and you’ll save money overall compared with renting a car and a hotel room.

Renting a car in Hawaii seems, like many things, to be more expensive than on the mainland. In some places like Honolulu and Waikiki you can stay amidst the tourist throngs and get by without a car – walk to popular beaches, walk to mini marts, walk to tourist restaurants, and rely on hotel concierges to book activities on other parts of the island that include transportation. You can take buses to some places on Oahu, but they can be very time consuming.

If you are a solo traveler in Hawaii, it might make sense to go stay in one of the cities the car-free route since all of those small (or large) premia are only impacting one traveler. For couples or families, though, you’ll more than make up the cost of a rental car by saving money on pretty much everything else . You’ll also gain the freedom to explore beautiful, peaceful spots that most tourists don’t get to see. Moreover, in many parts of Hawaii you absolutely need a car to get around.

We have a few favorites for finding deals on car rentals in Hawaii (and everywhere else). The most straightforward is good old RentalCars.com . You can quickly search for the type of car you want across tons of providers of all sizes and reserve without any upfront payment . Nearly every reservation can be cancelled, so we often check back weekly leading up to our travels and rebook if we see a better rate.

A great local option is Discount Hawaii Car Rental . They work with all of the major Hawaii car rental companies and have Hawaii-based customer service in case an issue comes up. That can be especially helpful if you’re arriving when it’s late in the day on the mainland.

Another option to consider is joining AARP . The membership costs about as much as a Starbucks run but can save you up to 30% on rental car rates (in addition to discounts on some hotels)! Surprisingly, you don’t have to be a senior or retired to join AARP.

Our rental car ended up being by far the most expensive component of our 5 week trip to Hawaii. We needed a minivan for part of our trip, but it would have been the same price as renting one compact car for five weeks and a second compact car for a week and a half in the middle when we were joined by a few grandmas.

Though the minivan was pricey at $1600 for five weeks, it was handy to have for hauling around a big stack of boogie boards, beach towels and cases of food from Costco (more on that below). If you plan to shop at Costco and haul around lots of beach gear, you may want to consider sizing up from the smaller options. For reference, the quote we received for an intermediate car for 10 days was just shy of $500. Thanks to rental car shortages after the pandemic, rates may be significantly higher if you’re booking a shorter rental period.

What’s the best place to get gas in Hawaii? It’s often Costco. Seriously, folks. On average gas was 70 cents cheaper per gallon at Costco than at other local gas stations during our last visit. That’s more than $10 saved every time you fill up! That said, other local gas sellers have upped their game by lowering their prices so it’s worth peeking at Safeway and Sam’s Club prices when you drive by, as the Costco gas lines can be long. My favorite tip for comparing gas prices in Hawaii is that on the store detail page for each Costco warehouse you can expand the “Gas Station” section to see hours and the current price! (Note that Hawaii Kai does not have gas, but all other Costco warehouses in Hawaii do.)

If you prefer simplicity in your travel arrangements, one option to consider for Hawaii vacations on a budget is a package deal. That’s how we went on our first Hawaii vacation!

Before booking a package deal, you need to carefully consider the value of everything that’s included to make sure it’s actually the cheapest way to vacation in Hawaii for the dates you want. We booked ours as a Black Friday special, so it was deeply discounted.

Here are some great places to look for discount Hawaii vacation packages:

• TravelZoo (we’ve gotten great deals for other destinations)
• Costco Travel

If you’re planning a budget Hawaii vacation, you’ll need to think carefully about how and where you’ll eat. Many items have to be transported to Hawaii by ship, so food prices in Hawaii can be anywhere from a few cents to a few dollars more than on the mainland. Having a plan for food is one of the keys to how to travel to Hawaii on a budget.

Of course the best way to save money on food in Hawaii is to book a vacation rental with a kitchen and prepare food yourself. But even if you plan to make all your meals at your home away from home, you’ll have to be judicious in you grocery purchases. But we’ve done some scouting for you and have a few suggestions to help you through since grocery prices in Hawaii can be quite daunting.

First, let’s discuss Costco. If you already have a membership and you’ll be visiting Hawaii with a few other people, Costco in Hawaii can be a great value ! Prices are nearly the same as at Costco on the mainland, and prices are much cheaper than local grocery stores for items like dairy, eggs and meat. There are seven Costco locations in Hawaii, including four on Oahu.

In addition to food and pantry staples, you’ll find some beach gear, Hawaiian shirts and other handy items. While you’re there, grab a meal at Costco – it doesn’t require membership and the whole family can eat for less than $10! It’s not a nutritious choice to make every day, but if you’re going to Costco in Hawaii once every week or two it’s a great way to save a little money without cooking at home.

Pro tip: If you don’t have a Costco membership but know someone who does, have them buy you some Costco Cash cards (gift cards). You can use these without a membership!

All that said, before you dive in on a Costco membership for your cheap trip to Hawaii consider whether or not you’ll actually make it through a 20 pound bag of rice during your vacation. And where will you store all that food? What should you do if you’ll only be in Hawaii for a short time or you aren’t bringing an entire football team? Head to Target!

That’s right, the big red bullseye of value has made it to paradise! You’ll find locations on Oahu, Maui and the Big Island and the stores are full of all your favorites from the mainland – plus some local specialties in the “Aloha Shop”. Since Target carries groceries – both house brand and national brands, it might just be the best place to do your grocery shopping in Hawaii. Similarly, if you prefer to shop at Walmart you’ll find tons of stores on Oahu and one or two on the other islands.

You may notice that prices in those stores are a little higher than what you’d find on the mainland, but fear not: both stores offer price match guarantees . Just pull up the item you want on your phone from the store’s website – or another major website – and they’ll give you the lower price right there at the register! I saved 20% on our sunscreen that way. Target will definitely be your friend when you travel to Hawaii on the cheap.

Another local option is Foodland. We found many items there that were only a little more expensive than at our local grocery stores on the mainland, though some things (like dairy and eggs) were much more expensive than we found at Costco. Sign up for their Maika’i card for extra discounts and make sure to check out the poke counter in the back of the store – we got an inside tip that many locals hit Foodland for their own poke fixes.

One of the great things about a vacation in Hawaii is that there are so many amazing things to do for free that take full advantage of what makes the Aloha State special. You can relax on the beach, hike to a waterfall , go on a scenic drive and even attend a hula performance – all for free! It’s one of the best places to travel to without a passport if you’re American.

We’ve had plenty of days in Hawaii when we didn’t spend a dime (except on shave ice, but that’s a different story). But what about big ticket paid activities? Can you still do them even if you’re visiting Hawaii on a budget? Here are a few ideas for how to have those special experiences without busting your budget.

Go Oahu Card

The Go Oahu Card by Smart Destinations bundles multiple activities together to save you money. There are two different options to choose from: All-Inclusive or Build Your Own.

With their All-Inclusive pass you pay a fixed rate based on the number of days you’d like to use the card (which can be spread over a two week period) and then you can do as many of those activities as you can squeeze in! There are options ranging from luaus to catamaran snorkeling trips to hikes to movie tours, and many activities offer free transportation from Waikiki in case you don’t have a car.

You can choose cards for 1, 2, 3, 5 or 7 days – cards for 3 days or more include your choice of one “premium” activity like a luau, a sunset dinner sail, snorkeling with wild sea turtles or even a semi-private surfing lesson.

If you’re visiting Oahu for a week, we think the 3 day card is the sweet spot for value at $219 per adult and $189 per child. Why? In addition to great activities like the Polynesian Cultural Center, you’ll get to choose one premium activity like a snorkel boat tour. There are plenty of other high-value activities included for the other two days so that you’d easily get plenty of value from the 3-day card .

Entertainment Book

Remember the Entertainment Book that our families all used to buy during fundraisers in the 1980s? They’re still around. And they actually offer some pretty good deals in Hawaii on several islands!

As with most deals in the Entertainment Book , you’ll generally find 2-for-1 type coupons. You’ll find coupons for plenty of restaurants, but also coupons for wonderful attractions like the helicopter tours, snorkel rentals, Twogood Kayaks, the Bishop Museum, the Pacific Aviation Museum at Pearl Harbor and more. If you use it for even one or two activities in Hawaii, it’ll pay for itself. You can even choose a digital book to have all the deals at your fingertips!

Other great resources for saving money in Hawaii are daily deal sites like Groupon and Living Social. You can find discounts on sailing trips, helicopter rides, parasailing and more. If you’re looking for things to do in Hawaii on a budget, make Groupon your first stop! Check out the deals here.

Use your memberships

You might have the key to cheap and free activities right in your wallet! If you’re a AAA member, always ask when booking hotels or activities if they offer a special rate.

And if you are a member of a science center back home that participates in the ASTC Passport program, bring your card to the wonderful Bishop Museum in Honolulu to receive free admission. We went twice (for free!) and even considered a third visit. It’s the perfect free activity if you’re trying to visit Hawaii with kids on a budget!

Military discounts

There are almost 50,000 US military personnel and their dependents living in Hawaii (population around 1.5 million). Military families vacationing in Hawaii will find discounts almost everywhere on admission to attractions. You’ll also benefit from lower hotel rates and access to four commissaries on Oahu, plus an exchange where you can buy discounted gifts. Thank you for your service!

There are two schools of thought about “island hopping” in Hawaii as it relates to the cheapest way to visit Hawaii.

First, the “pro island hopping camp”: Flights from mainland US to Hawaii are generally long and expensive. It’s cheaper to fly to Hawaii once and visit several islands while you’re there than it is to pay for separate roundtrip airfares. This is especially true if you’re coming from the east coast or if Hawaii is a once-in-a-lifetime splurge for you! The cheapest way to travel between Hawaiian islands is to look for a deal on Southwest and use companion pass if you have it, especially if you’ll need to check a bag.

Second, the “anti island hopping camp”: If you’re trying to plan a trip to Hawaii on a budget, you’ll economize more by staying in one place. Many vacation rentals offer a weekly rate. Rental cars are much cheaper by the week – often 5 days cost more than 7 days ( see the difference here ).

If you visit two islands (or more!) you’ll have to either eat out all the time or buy small, expensive quantities of food – and then buy them again on your next stop.

Plus you have to pay to get from one island to another, often around $75 each way. You can limit that to one segment if you book an “open jaw” into one island and out of another, but check that pricing versus a regular roundtrip plus an inter-island roundtrip.

Where do we fall? We suggest that you sit back and enjoy the aloha on one island at a time! Hawaii will always be waiting for you to return. The exception is if you’ve already been to some of the islands and want to visit a new on, but flight availability isn’t great. Now that we live in the Midwest it might work out better for us to stop on Oahu or Maui en route to Kauai since it has fewer inbound flights from the mainland.

If you’re planning a family vacation to Hawaii on a budget, some of the tips we’ve already mentioned will be extremely helpful! Here’s a quick roundup:

• Look for companion pass deals for airfare
• Grab an Airbnb with a kitchen – make sure it has a decent sized fridge if you plan to shop at Costco in Hawaii
• Encourage your kids to eat fresh, local food rather than food that’s packaged and sent from the mainland (you can bring a box of cereal in your luggage if that’s a must-have)
• Bring your own car seat to avoid paying for one with your rental car
• Use your science museum membership from home for free admission to the Bishop Museum
• If possible, avoid major school break times

Obviously prices vary a ton depending on where you’re coming from and style of travel. As a baseline, domestic plane tickets to Hawaii cost $400-1200 per person in 2022. Hotel or Airbnb accommodations cost $150-600 per night. The cost of food varies tremendously, but budget at least $40 per person per day if you’ll be eating all your meals at restaurants. Even “cheap trips to Hawaii” aren’t really cheap by true budget travel standards unfortunately.

Oahu can be very inexpensive thanks to abundant choices for lodging and food, and staying in Waikiki can remove the need for a rental car. The Hilo side of the Big Island also offers good value for the money, as it’s one of the less popular tourist areas. All things considered, the Big Island is probably the cheapest island in Hawaii.

We’ve found great deals almost anytime outside of school breaks! Fall is the quietest (and thus, cheapest) time for tourism in Hawaii. January and February can also be inexpensive times for flights as long as you avoid the end of winter break and the long weekends during the season.

If you’re flying at an off-peak time of year, you can often snag deals just a week or two in advance from the west coast. For flights over holiday periods or from the east coast, you’ll want to buy your tickets several months in advance for the best deals.

Top 10 Attractions in Maui in May

There are many exciting attractions in Maui in May. If you are looking for fun things to do in Maui, there are plenty of wonderful attractions to choose from.

1. The Lahaina Historic Trail 

Start your walk at Baldwin Home Museum. It is the oldest surviving house on the entire Island. Then take your time and visit the lighthouse, courthouse, and more. 

Once finished you will find yourself at the legendary Banyan tree. The tree itself is over 145 years old and has grown 16 different trunks. At over 60 feet tall it is the tallest Banyan tree in all the United States. 

This historic trail explores over 500 years of history and approximately 65 different sites in Lahaina town. 

2. Seven Sacred Pools 

The pools of ‘Ohe’o, also known as the Seven Sacred Pools, offer up the swimming experience of a lifetime. 

Nestled in a lush rainforest and beautiful bamboo trees, these natural pools and gorgeous waterfalls are one of East Maui’s most beloved attractions. 

The Seven Sacred Pools are fantastic to visit when in Maui in May as the rain has dissipated and the area gets closed off for safety during wet weather. You will want to visit on a sunny day. 

3. Ironwood Ranch 

Ride through the rolling hills of a gorgeous Maui pineapple plantation on horseback. 

Get your saddles ready at the Ironwood Ranch in Napili and take a trip through the mountainsides, lush rainforests, and even pineapple fields. 

Experience what Hawaiian ranch hands experience with this fantastic attraction. 

4. Black Rock Cliff Dive

Commonly referred to Black Rock due to the color of the Lava Rock Cliffs at Puu Kekaa, This is a fantastic place to cliff dive.

In the 1700s, a Maui king known as Chief Kahekili dove off the top of these cliffs and into the roaring ocean waters. 

This is a popular tradition that is reenacted with a beautiful sunset ceremony that includes torch lighting. After the ceremony a warrior diver will take that same dive, leaving onlookers feeling a great sense of pride. 

If you are an adventure seeker, head on over to Black Rock Cliffs in the daytime and Snorkel the crystal clear waters below. Want to try the drive yourself? Just make sure you are safe! 

5. Haleakala Crater 

According to Hawaiian mythology, the location of the Haleakala Crater is where the demigod Maui lassoed the Sun. 

This place is an amazing place to watch the sunrise. You do have to be up particularly early to witness the magic of a Maui sunrise here though because it does take about 2 hours to make it to the top.

Be aware that you do require reservations to access this area this early in the morning. 

You will want to ensure that you dress accordingly as well. It does get rather cool at the summit as the elevation is approximately 10,000 feet. 

6. Tour of the Stars

This is one of the best things to do in Maui in May. When you get a clear night, the sky lights up with a gorgeous display. Take a guided astronomical tour to fully appreciate the views. 

The Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa offers a fantastic tour complete with powerful telescopes and more.

Snack on some delicious chocolate strawberries and sip on yummy sparkling wine. You will hear all kinds of stories of celestial navigation. 

7. Walk the Kapalua Coastal Trail 

This walk is an amazing way to take in so much that Maui has to offer. The walk is less than two miles but you will experience several gorgeous beaches, tidepools, and more.

You will also get some of the best coastal views that can be experienced in Maui. 

The trail starts at Kapalua Beach and goes north. Your walk will end at D.T Flemings Beach. 

This is a popular trail on Maui. Make sure to wear some good walking shoes. 

8. Swim with Turtles at Turtle Town 

You can either visit this amazing location by yourself or book a snorkel tour that includes the Molokini Crater. 

Just off the coast from Maluaka Beach is where you will find Turtle Town. There are plenty of fish here as well as several sea turtles. Go snorkeling here and experience something like never before. 

9. Ziplining

There is no shortage of ziplining opportunities in Maui . With so many different tours to choose from, there is something here for everyone. 

If you want to experience one of the more popular tours, Check out the one along the North Shore. They offer some amazing experiences. However, there are so many others to choose from so you can customize your experience. 

Going ziplining in Maui is a fantastic way to get some spectacular views of all the beauty the island has to offer. 

10. Helicopter Tour 

If you want a bird’s eye view of Maui, a Helicopter Tour is a great way to do it. Helicopters can also access parts of the island that aren’t reachable by car, boat or even foot, giving you the advantage. 

There are several different helicopter tours that you can participate in Maui. Some take passengers on scenic flights of the entire island and others offer tours of specific areas. It’s entirely up to you what you prefer. 

Book a helicopter tour in Maui and you are sure to enjoy your experience.

Cultural festivals and special events in Hawaii for May, June, July, August 2023

For years we created lists of the upcoming Hawaii cultural festivals. We issued these lists three times per year. Then the ovid-cay andemic-pay hit in March 2020 and all festivals came to a screeching halt. The good news is that several festivals are making a comeback in 2023.

To help you skim through this list of the upcoming cultural events of May, June, July and August, we’ve first organized by month, then date. After the date, we list which island(s) are hosting the festival. So, let’s take a look at what’s on the horizon.

1st – All Hawaiian Islands – Lei Day – The beauty and traditions of the Hawaiian lei is celebrated all over Hawaii. Check local newspapers and/or your concierge for special Lei Day events that we be held near where you’re staying. Note that if Lei Day falls on a weekday, some events may be held on the weekends before and after May 1st. Here are some Lei Day Celebrations to note:

• 95th annual Lei Day Celebration at Kapiolani Park near Waikiki on Oahu is probably the biggest Lei Day celebration in all of Hawaii. This event is held on May 1st
• 41st Annual Walter & Irmalee Pomroy Lei Contest on May 1st on Kauai
• Lei Day Aloha – Oahu on May 6th
• Lei Day at Maui Mall Village on May 6th on Maui
• Lei Day at Waikoloa on the Big Island

3rd – 11th – Oahu – World Fireknife Championship at Polynesian Cultural Center . One of the highlights of luau shows is the fireknife performance. This competition attracts the world’s best.

19th – 29th – Hawaii (Big) Island – Honoka’a Western Week – A celebration of the paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) history and culture including a parade, rodeo, talent show, block party, food contest, music and Hamakua Harvest Festival .

29th  – Oahu – Memorial Day Events – A ceremony at Punchbowl and Lantern Floating Festival are two of Hawaii’s top Memorial Day events. Check our Oahu Memorial Day Events page  which will be updated in May.

8th – 11th — Maui — 42nd Annual Kapalua Wine & Food Festival — This food and wine festival is one of the top culinary festivals in Hawaii. See this link  for more information.

9th – 11th All Hawaiian Islands – King Kamehameha Celebration — The first king to unite the Hawaiian Islands, King Kamehameha, is celebrated across the islands. If you like parades, this holiday offers a good chance to see one in Hawaii. The state holiday of King Kamehameha Day is officially on June 11th, however celebrations typically take place on the weekend nearest to June 11th. Check local papers and/or with your concierge for celebrations. Some noteworthy events are:

• 151st King Kamehameha Lei Draping Ceremony in Honolulu on June 9th.
• The  106th Annual King Kamehameha Celebration Floral Parade on Oahu, which takes place on June 10th this year.
• Also on the 10th, is the King Kamehameha Day Celebration and Floral Parade in Kailua-Kona  on Hawaii Island.
• This  site usually posts special events for this holiday. Closer to June, it should be updated with more specifics for 2023.

9th – 11th — Hawaii (Big) Island — Hawaii Kuauli Pacific & Asia Cultural Festival — A celebration of Hawaii Island’s beauty and cultures. See this link  for more information.

1st – Lanai — Pineapple Festival — Lanai Pineapple Festival celebrates the history and culture of their pineapple plantation past. When details are announced, see this link  for more information.

4th – All islands —  Independence Day – Many fun events are held across the islands to celebrate the 4th of July. We post the top fireworks shows, parades and more in these July 4th island guides, which will be completely updated in mid to late June:

22nd – Hawaii (Big) Island – 39th Annual Cultural Festival at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park at Kahuku features Hawaiian music, hula, arts, crafts and games.

28th – 30th — Hawaii (Big) Island — Hilo Orchid Society Annual Show and Sale – Hawaii Island is known as the “orchid isle” so it’s fitting that Hawaii’s biggest orchid show takes place on Hawaii Island. See  this link  for more information.

5th – 6th — Kauai — Heiva I Kauai  — An international Tahitian dance competition.

19th – 27th — Oahu — Duke’s OceanFest  -A celebration of one of Hawaii’s most beloved watermen and legends, Duke Kahanamoku. A variety of water sport competitions and events take place over several days.

Hawaii’s New Message to Tourists: ‘Maui Is Ready’

Maui is ready for its close-up, according to a new marketing campaign. If tourism doesn't rebound soon, valuable talent may leave.

Tourists have remained unsure whether Maui is ready to welcome them after its painful recovery from last August’s wildfires. So Hawaii’s tourism agency launched a marketing campaign last week to reassure them that the entire island is open for business.

The campaign spotlights local businesses and residents welcoming visitors back, and it’s called Mākaukau Maui , which means “Maui is Ready.”

“We wanted to offer a platform and a voice for them to make that invitation to folks,” said T. Ilihia Gionson , the Hawaii Tourism Authority’s public affairs officer.

Tourism officials launched the campaign after visitor spending dropped 19% in January . Maui lost an estimated $120 million in revenue.

Maui faces competition from other sun-and-sea destinations that are also wooing mainland Americans.

“We’re in competition with other sun destinations,” said  Lisa Paulson , executive director of the Maui Lodging and Hotel Association . “Mexico and the Caribbean are pushing hard.”

Clock Is Ticking in Western Maui

If tourism doesn’t recover quickly, skilled restaurant and other tourism workers may leave the area. Some may have already.

A large number of Maui locals remain unemployed. Unemployment was 6.2% in January, up from 3% last year, according to the Hawaii Tourism Authority. Some Maui locals also face the possibility of their unemployment benefits running out soon. 

“A lot of people that initially filed right after the fires, their unemployment benefits are ending at the end of this month,” said Paulson, noting that some locals have already left the island to find work elsewhere.

Airline Piece of the Puzzle

For Maui to make a full recovery, airlines will need to keep flying there. But seat capacity on flights to Maui was down 16% in January from a year earlier, according to Cirium Diio. The number of flights was down 14%. “Despite the big dropoff in capacity since last summer, Maui’s airport is still busier now, measured by seat capacity, than it was during this time in 2019, before the pandemic,” said Jay Shabat, Senior Analyst and Co-Founder of Airline Weekly.

Complex Picture of Recovery

While the marketing campaign says Maui is ready for its close-up, the on-the-ground picture is more nuanced.

The August wildfires destroyed the homes of thousands of individuals and families. According to Paulson, over 3,300 displaced individuals stay in hotels in Kaanapali, Central Maui, and Kihei under contracts with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Red Cross.  

At an HTA community meeting in December, some of Maui’s displaced voiced concerns about the lack of long-term housing and potential the loss of their accommodations to tourists. Government officials are trying to find a long-term housing solution for the displaced.

Another concern raised at the December community meeting was about tourists being disrespectful as locals try to heal.

Gionson said this week that tourists were being sensitive to locals. “The feedback I’m getting is that a lot of folks are being very respectful,” he said. ”They are heeding the restrictions to stay out of the fire-affected areas.”

Future of the Historic Lahaina

The historic town of Lahaina sustained the most damage from the wildfire, with many parts completely destroyed and still off-limits to visitors. Lahaina was once a former capital of the Hawaiian kingdom. 

Yet some of the town’s buildings and sites have survived.

“There are things like the famous Lahaina Banyan Tree that are showing signs of renewed life, places like Old Lahaina Luau on the waterfront, which just reopened recently,” said Gionson.

The community is trying to figure out how to rebuild Lahaina.

“I don’t think the tourism industry should drive the conversation about what happens next,” said Gionson. “It’s a community conversation that needs to be had.”

Maui’s Ongoing Marketing Confusion

On August 8, Maui’s western region suffered a devastating wildfire that killed over 100 people, damaged thousands of buildings, and caused over $5 billion in damage. 

The government initially said that the whole island was off-limits to tourists, but then said that applied only to the western portion. That area didn’t fully reopen until November.

Immediately after the fire, the Hawaii Tourism Authority ran a campaign called Mālama Maui – “to protect, nurture and care for” – to try to stop people from canceling trips to Maui’s still-open and unaffected areas.

Yet, as of today, the whole island continues to struggle.

“We’re almost nine months since the fire, and we continue to hear ‘We’re not sure if Maui is open,’ or ‘We’re not sure if we should go,’ said Gionson.

A Terrorist Attack in Russia

The tragedy in a moscow suburb is a blow to vladimir v. putin, coming only days after his stage-managed election victory..

A terrorist attack on a concert hall near Moscow Friday night killed more than 100 people and injured scores more. It was the deadliest attack in Russia in decades. Today, my colleague Anton Troianovski on the uncomfortable question it raises for Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin. Has his focus on the war in Ukraine left his country more vulnerable to other threats?

It’s Monday, March 25.

So Anton, tell us about this horrific attack in Russia. When did you first hear about it?

So it was Friday night around 8:30 Moscow time that we started seeing reports about a terrorist attack at a concert hall just outside Moscow. I frankly wasn’t sure right at the beginning how serious this was because we have seen quite a lot of attacks inside Russia over the last two years since the full scale invasion of Ukraine, and it was hard to make sense of right away. But then within a few hours, it was really looking like we were seeing the worst terrorist attack in or around the Russian capital in more than 20 years.

On Friday night, Crocus City Hall was the venue for a concert by an old time Russian rock group called Picnic. It was a sold-out show. Thousands of people were expected to be there. And before the start of the concert, it appears that four gunmen in camouflage walked into the venue and started shooting.

We started seeing videos on social media, just incredibly awful graphic footage of these men shooting concertgoers at point blank range. In one of the videos, we see one of them slitting the throat of one of the concertgoers. And then what appears to have happened is that they set the concert hall on fire. Russian investigators said they had some kind of flammable liquid that they lit on fire and basically tried to burn down this huge concert hall with wounded people in it.

Some of these people ended up trapped as the building burned, as eventually, the roof of this concert hall collapsed. And it seems as though much of the casualties actually came as a result of the fire as opposed to as a result of the shooting.

The actual attack, it looks didn’t take more than 15 to 30 minutes. At which point, the four men were able to escape. They got into a white Renault sedan and fled the scene.

It took the authorities clearly a while to arrive. The attackers were able to spread this horrific violence for, as I said, at least 15 minutes or so. So among other things, there’s a lot of questions being raised right now about why the official response took so long.

And you said the perpetrators got away. What happened next?

So it looks like they were caught at some point hours after the attack. On Saturday morning, the Kremlin said that 11 people had been arrested in connection to the attack, including all four perpetrators. They were taken into custody according to the Russian authorities in the Bryansk region of Russia, roughly a five-hour drive from the concert hall in southwestern Russia, also pretty close to the border with Ukraine.

Obviously, we have to take everything that the Russian authorities are saying with a grain of salt. And as we’ve been reporting on this throughout the weekend, we have very much tried to verify all the claims that the Russian authorities are making independently. And so our colleagues in the visual investigations unit of the times have been working very hard on that.

And what we can say based on the footage of the attack that was taken by many different individuals and posted to social media, it very much looks like the four men who were detained who Russia says were the attackers, in fact, are the same people who were seen doing the shooting in those videos of the attack judging by their clothes, judging by their hairstyle, judging by their build and other identifying characteristics that our colleagues have been looking at. So it does appear that by Saturday morning, the men who directly carried out this attack had been taken into custody.

Wow. So the Russian government actually apprehended the perpetrators, according to our reporting work that our colleagues have done. So who are these guys?

We don’t know much about them. The Russian government says that none of them are Russian citizens. After the arrest, throughout the weekend, videos, short clips of interrogations of these men have been popping up on the Telegram social networks, clearly leaked or provided by Russian law enforcement. You see these men bloodied, hurt.

And is this Russian interrogators abusing them?

Yes. That is very much what it looks like. And it’s also notable that the Russian authorities aren’t even hiding it. Two of the suspects in those videos are heard speaking Tajik. So that’s the language spoken in Tajikistan, a Central Asian country, but also in some of the surrounding countries, including Afghanistan.

At the end of the day, this is still very much a developing situation, and there’s a ton that we don’t know. But hours after the attack, the Islamic State, ISIS, took responsibility. And they then really tried to emphasize this by even releasing a video on Saturday showing the attack taking place as it was filmed apparently by one of the attackers. And US intelligence officials have told our colleagues in Washington that they indeed believe this to be true, that they believe that this ISIS offshoot did carry out this attack.

Wow. So the Americans actually think that ISIS, the extremist group that we know so well from Iraq and Syria, carried out this attack.

Yes. And all of this is really remarkable because just a few weeks ago, on March 7, the United States actually warned publicly that something just like this could happen. The US embassy in Moscow issued a security alert, urging US citizens to avoid large gatherings over the next 48 hours. They said that the embassy is monitoring reports that extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow to include concerts.

Crazy. That is a very specific warning.

Absolutely. And of course, the statement mentioned that specific 48-hour time frame. But nevertheless, it feels really significant.

And did the Russian authorities respond to that?

They did, and frankly, they responded mostly by ridiculing it. This is all obviously happening against the backdrop of the worst conflict between Moscow and the West since the depths of the Cold War. And so Vladimir Putin actually publicly dismissed this warning. He called it blackmail in a speech that he gave just three days before the attack last Tuesday.

So despite the specificity publicly at least, the Russian authorities did not take it seriously.

That is remarkable. And so three days later, this huge attack happens. Where is Putin in all of this? And who is he blaming? What’s his version of events?

So he’s coming off this Russian election season, as you know, where he declared this very stage managed victory and after that had been taking a victory lap of sorts. But Putin doesn’t appear on camera until around 19 hours after the attack. At that point, Russian state television airs a five-minute speech by Putin.

He’s sitting at this nondescript desk surrounded by two Russian flags, but it’s not clear where he is located at that point. It doesn’t look like he’s at the Kremlin.

And Anton, what does he say?

So he describes the horror of this attack. He declares Sunday a national day of mourning. He says the most important thing is to make sure that the people who did this aren’t able to carry out more violence.

He also says that the four men who carried out the attack were captured as they were moving toward Ukraine. And he claims that based on preliminary information, as he put it, there were people on the Ukrainian side who were going to help these men cross the border safely. And remember, this is an extremely dangerous militarized border given that Russia and Ukraine have been in a state of full scale war for over two years now.

And as he ends the speech, He. Says that Russia will punish the perpetrators, whoever they may be, whoever may have sent them.

So what’s important about all that is first of all, that Putin did not mention the apparent Islamic extremist connection here that Western officials have been talking about, and that is in front of all of us given that Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack. But he does set the stage for blaming Ukraine for this horrific tragedy, even though it seems that Putin and the Russian government may be alone in thinking that.

So Anton, the Islamic State has claimed responsibility for this attack, but Putin ignores that and kind of obliquely points the finger at Ukraine. What do we actually know about who did this?

Well, let’s start with the group that claimed responsibility for this attack. That’s ISIS, the Islamic State. And in particular, US officials are talking about a branch of ISIS called ISIS-K or Islamic State Khorasan, which is an Islamic State affiliate that’s primarily active in Afghanistan and that in recent years has gained this reputation for extreme brutality.

They might be best known in the US for being the group behind the Kabul Airport bombing back in 2021 right after the Taliban took over when thousands of Afghans were trying to escape. That was a bombing that killed 13 American troops and 171 civilians, and it really raised ISIS case profile.

So this terrorist group is mainly based in Afghanistan. What do they want with Russia?

So what’s notable is our colleague Eric Schmitt in Washington talked to an expert over the weekend who said ISIS-K has really developed an obsession with Russia and Putin over the last two years. They say Russia has Muslim blood on its hands.

So it looks like the primary driver in this enmity against Russia is Russia’s alliance with Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian president, who is also a sworn enemy of ISIS. And Russia intervened, of course, on Assad’s behalf in the Syrian civil war starting back in 2015. But it’s not just Syria. So the experts we’ve talked to say that in the ISIS-K propaganda, you also hear about Russia’s wars in the Southern region of Chechnya in the 1990s and the early 2000s.

And also even about the Soviet Union’s war in Afghanistan throughout the 1980s. There’s this really long arc of Russia’s and the Soviet Union’s wars in Muslim regions that appears to be driving this violent hatred of Russia on the part of ISIS-K.

OK. So ISIS-K is pointing not only to Russia’s actions in Syria but actually further back into Russian history, even Soviet history, to its war in Chechnya and then to the Soviet’s war in Afghanistan. Yet Putin in his speech ignores the group entirely and instead points in the direction of Ukraine. Is there a chance that this attack could have been carried out by Ukraine?

Well, look. It is true that Ukraine has carried out attacks inside Russia that put Russian civilians at risk. There have been several bombings that American officials have ascribed to parts of the Ukrainian government. Perhaps most famously, there was the bombing that killed Darya Dugina, the daughter of a leading Russian ultranationalist back in the summer of 2022.

That was a bombing that happened just outside Moscow. And of course, there have been various drone strikes by Ukraine against things like Russian energy infrastructure even just in the last few weeks. But we really don’t see any evidence right now of any connection of the Ukrainian state to this attack. US officials tell us they don’t see anything, and we haven’t in our own reporting come across such a connection either.

And there is, of course, the context of the US has said very clearly that they don’t want to see Ukraine carrying out big attacks inside Russia. American officials have said that doing so is counterproductive, could lead to the risk of greater escalation by Putin in his war. And we’re in an extremely sensitive time right now when it comes to US support for Ukraine.

The US, of course, has given all these weapons, tens of billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine. But right now, $60 billion in aid are stuck in US Congress. And you would think that Ukraine wouldn’t want to do anything right now —

That could risk that.

That could risk that. Exactly. I mean, also, let’s just say, I mean, this was an incredibly horrific attack, and we haven’t seen anything from Ukraine in the way they’ve carried themselves in defending against Russia in this war that would make us think they would be capable of doing something like this.

Anton, just to step back for a moment. I mean, it’s interesting because this attack, it really doesn’t remotely fit into Putin’s obsession about where the threat is coming from in the world to Russia, right? His obsession is Ukraine. And this kind of short circuits that.

Absolutely. I mean, Russia has had a real Islamic extremism problem for decades going back to the 1990s to those brutal wars against Chechen separatists that were a big part of Putin coming to power and developing his strongman image.

So it’s really remarkable how we’ve arrived at this turning point here for Putin where he used to be someone who really portrayed himself as the man keeping Russians safe from terrorism. Now the threat of terrorism coming from Islamic extremists doesn’t really fit into that narrative that Putin has because now Putin’s narrative is all about the threat from Ukraine and the West and that the most important thing to do now for Russian national security is to win the war against Ukraine.

And does the security failure here have anything to do with Russia actually being obsessed with Ukraine? Like it’s kind of taken its eye off the ball?

Well, look. The Russian domestic intelligence agency, the FSB, they’re the ones who are supposed to keep the country safe from terrorism. But that has also been the agency that has been charged with asserting control over the territories in Ukraine that Putin has occupied, and the FSB has been spending all this time hunting down dissidents of Putin.

Just a few hours before the attack on Friday, Russia officially classified the so-called LGBT movement, as they put it, on their list of terrorists and extremists. So terrorists in the current Putin narrative are anyone who disagrees with him, who criticizes the war, and who doesn’t fit into the Kremlin’s conception of so-called traditional values, which has become such a big Putin talking point.

So the FSB has been pretty busy but not in terms of Islamic terrorism. In terms of its own people.

Exactly. We don’t know for sure obviously how the FSB is apportioning its resources, but there’s a lot of reason to believe that as the leadership of that organization has been looking at Putin’s priorities in Ukraine and in terms of cracking down on dissent domestically, they could well have lost sight of the risks of actual terrorism inside Russia.

Which is pretty remarkable, right, Anton? Because you and I know and we’ve spoken a lot about on the show, a big part of the reason that Putin actually appeals, his argument to Russians is that he’s the security guy. Think what you will about him. He’s the guy who’s fundamentally going to keep you safe. And here we have this attack.

That’s right. And so he needs to continue making the case that he knows how to keep Russia safe. And that’s why my colleagues and I have been watching a lot of Russian state TV this weekend. And this ISIS claim of responsibility barely comes up. And when it does come up, it’s often being referred to as fake news. Instead, Russian propaganda is already assuming that it was Ukraine and the West that did this. We’ll see if the Russian public buys that.

But if you look at the way the last two years have gone in Russia, I think you have to draw the conclusion that Russian propaganda is extremely powerful. And I think if this message continues, it’s quite likely that very many Russians will believe that Ukraine and the West had something to do with this attack.

And so the worry now, as we look ahead, is that Putin could end up using this to try to escalate his war even further, which shows us why this is such a tenuous and perilous moment because at the same time, this attack reminds us that Russia faces other security risks. And as Putin deepens that conflict with the West, he may be doing so at the cost of introducing even more instability inside the country.

Late Sunday night, the four men suspected of carrying out the concert hall attack were arraigned in a court in Moscow and charged with committing an act of terrorism. All four are from Tajikistan but worked as migrant laborers in Russia. They range in age from 19 to 32 and face a maximum sentence of life in prison. Also on Sunday, Russian authorities said that 137 bodies had been recovered from the charred remains of the concert hall, including those of three children.

Here’s what else you need to know today.

In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London, and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous. The surgery was successful. However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present.

In a video message on Friday, Catherine, Princess of Wales, disclosed that she’d been diagnosed with cancer and has begun chemotherapy, ending weeks of fevered speculation about her absence from British public life.

This, of course, came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately.

In her message, Middleton did not say what kind of cancer. She had or how far it had progressed but emphasized that the diagnosis has required meaningful time to process.

It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment. But most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte, and Louis in a way that’s appropriate for them and to reassure them that I’m going to be OK.

Unless otherwise specified, the per diem locality is defined as "all locations within, or entirely surrounded by, the corporate limits of the key city, including independent entities located within those boundaries."

Per diem localities with county definitions shall include "all locations within, or entirely surrounded by, the corporate limits of the key city as well as the boundaries of the listed counties, including independent entities located within the boundaries of the key city and the listed counties (unless otherwise listed separately)."

When a military installation or Government - related facility(whether or not specifically named) is located partially within more than one city or county boundary, the applicable per diem rate for the entire installation or facility is the higher of the rates which apply to the cities and / or counties, even though part(s) of such activities may be located outside the defined per diem locality.

How to see the penumbral lunar eclipse, March's full moon

Astronomy fans can check out a unique Worm Moon this month as March's full moon rises during a penumbral lunar eclipse.

March's full moon will reach peak illumination at 1 a.m. ET on Monday, but it will appear full through Tuesday morning, according to NASA . The Old Farmer's Almanac details specific moonrise times for different ZIP codes across the United States. 

As the full moon rises during the late evening of March 24 into the early morning hours of March 25, it will travel through the Earth's penumbra — the faint outer part of its shadow — creating a penumbral eclipse. 

What is a penumbral eclipse and where will it be visible?

The  penumbral eclipse is one of three different types of lunar eclipses. There's also the total lunar eclipse and the partial lunar eclipse.

The penumbral lunar eclipse will be visible to all of North and South America, according to NASA. It's easy to miss if you don't know it's happening.

During the eclipse, the moon will dim very slightly for a few nighttime hours. The moon will start entering the Earth's shadow at 12:53 a.m. ET. It will reach the point of greatest eclipse at 3:13 a.m, with 96% of the moon in partial shadow. The moon will exit the shadow at 5:32 a.m.

The next lunar eclipse, a partial eclipse, will take place on Sept. 18. It will be visible in parts of the Americas, Europe and Africa. Astronomy fans won't see a total lunar eclipse until March of next year. 

Why is March's full moon known as a Worm Moon?

Full moon names often come from seasons, historical crops and the behavior of certain animals. The " Worm Moon " moniker may have come from the earthworms typically found as spring nears, according to The Old Farmer's Almanac. The name may also refer to worms, or beetle larvae, coming out from bark as trees thaw from the winter.

March's full moon also goes by several other names referring to animals, including the Eagle Moon, Goose Moon and the Crow Comes Back Moon. It's also known as the Sugar Moon, the Wind Strong Moon and the Sore Eyes Moon.

This year, March's full moon is also known as the Paschal Full Moon because it will be the first full moon of spring.

Look up — what else can you see in the sky this spring?

April will feature one of the most hotly anticipated events of the year — April 8's total solar eclipse . The month also includes the Lyrid meteor shower, which will peak between April 21 and 22. Right after that, April's full moon, known as the Pink Moon, will reach peak illumination on April 23.

May's full moon, the Flower Moon, reaches peak illumination on May 23.
