Ministry of Health (MOH) Public Health Advisory

Travellers should refer to the  ICA website  for the latest information on travelling to/from or transiting through Singapore. Residents of Singapore intending to depart Singapore are strongly advised to check the latest  MOH Travel Advisory  for outbound travel. For the latest updates on Singapore's COVID-19 situation, please refer to the MOH website at  https://www.moh.gov.sg/covid-19 .

Travel Requirements to India

All travellers should preferably be fully vaccinated as per the approved primary schedule of vaccination against COVID-19 in their country .  Given that travel guidelines can change regularly, and there may be additional state-level requirements imposed, travellers to India are advised to refer to the official website of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, at   https://www.mohfw.gov.in .

You may wish to refer to the official website of the India Ministry of Home Affairs at https://www.mha.gov.in for detailed information on COVID-19 restrictions in different states in India. You may also wish to refer to the official website of the Indian Bureau of Immigration at https://boi.gov.in/ .

Entry and Exit

Singaporeans are required to obtain a visa before travelling to India. There should be at least six months' validity on your passport on the expected date of departure from India. As visa requirements often change at short notice, we advise you to contact your travel agency, or the High Commission of India in Singapore for up-to-date information.

e-Visa Facility for Entry into India – The Indian e-Visa is valid for entry through 284 designated airports and 5 designated seaports. However, Indian e-Visa holders can exit from any of the authorised Immigration Check Posts (ICPs) in India.  This Indian e-Visa is an addition to the existing Visa services.  Singaporeans need to apply for the electronic Visa (e-Visa) prior to arrival, i.e. submit your Indian visa forms online and secure the necessary approval before departing for India. Upon arrival in India, travellers on the e-Visa would need to proceed to a “Visa on Arrival” counter at the airport to get their visa stamped on their passport. Please refer to the Indian Visa Online website for more information, and beware of fake websites that claim to offer visa services.

There are several types of visas issued for travel to India, such as Tourist, Business, and Medical visas.  The validity of all visas commences from the date of issue of the visa and not the date of arrival in India.  You should ensure that you obtain the right visa for your travel purposes.

Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card holders:  OCI cardholders do not require a visa to enter India, and only need to present a valid passport and OCI card.

If your passport is lost or stolen in India, you will need to do the following:

  • Lodge a police report with the Indian authorities.
  • Report a lost passport online with ICA or contact the Singapore High Commission in New Delhi or Consulates in Mumbai or Chennai.
  • Depending on your location, the nearest Overseas Mission will contact you for the collection once your passport or Document of Identity (DOI) is ready.
  • One (for DOI application) or two (for passport applications) passport-sized photographs. Instant photographs are acceptable.
  • A copy of your police report.
  • Documentary proof of your Singapore Citizenship (such as your Singapore Identification Card or Driving License) to verify your identity.
  • Relevant fees for the application.
  • Travellers can refer to ICA's website for more information on loss of passports overseas.
  • For DOI holders, you will need an exit permit from the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) . You will need to provide proof of address in Delhi and one passport-sized colour photograph. Please note that exit permits are not issued on weekends or Indian Public Holidays. The contact details for the FRRO in New Delhi are:

Foreigners Regional Registration Office

Block 8, Sector 1

Telephone: 91-11-2671-1348, 2671-1384

Fax : 91-11-2671-1348

Safety and Security

Crime and motor accidents:  The rate of crime and motor accidents in India are high.  Travellers should pay close attention to their personal security at all times and monitor the local news on information regarding security risks.  Precautions that travellers can take include:

  • Avoid isolated or unlit areas, including city streets, village lanes and beaches.
  • Do not accept food or drinks from strangers or leave drinks unattended.
  • Do not leave your belongings unattended at all times, and pay close attention particularly in crowded areas.
  • Travel in well-maintained vehicles with seatbelts.
  • Avoid travelling alone on public transport, autos, taxis and rickshaws, particularly at night.

Travel for women in India:  Women should exercise caution when travelling in India.  Women tend to receive unwanted attention in the form of verbal and physical harassment by individuals or groups of men.  There have been sexual assaults on female visitors in tourist areas. Women travellers should respect local dress codes and customs.  Avoid travelling alone, even in major cities and at tourist sites.  Choose safe modes of transport, and arrange airport transfers before arrival.

Terrorism and civil unrest: In November 2008, terrorists attacked a number of sites in Mumbai, including luxury hotels, a railway station and a restaurant.  Over 160 people were killed and scores wounded. A Singapore citizen was also killed.  Terrorist attacks in India can happen with little or no warning.  Terrorists have targeted popular tourist areas.  In addition, violent protests and demonstrations occur sporadically and often spontaneously.  Travellers should exercise vigilance and minimise risks:

  • Monitor the news for new or emerging threats.
  • Heed official warnings seriously and avoid areas identified as possible areas of attack.
  • Stay clear of all demonstrations, political event rallies, processions and large-scale public gatherings.
  • Be particularly vigilant in the period around days of national significance, such as Republic day (26 January) and Independence Day (15 August).

Gold, Silver & Jewellery: There are strict regulations governing the carriage of gold, silver and jewellery into India by International travellers. Please refer to the guide for travellers published by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, Government of India at https://old.cbic.gov.in/htdocs-cbec/ guide_for_travellers/guide- for-travellers  for information on customs requirements and restrictions.

Satellite phones: Travellers are advised to ensure that they do not carry satellite phones to India. Satellite phones carried by travellers to India will be detained/confiscated and the traveller may be penalised under the relevant sections of Indian Telegraph Act. Satellite phones are also not permitted to be imported except with a license issued by the WPC wing of Department of Telecommunications. Refer to  https://dot.gov.in/spectrum- management/2457   for details.  For information on customs requirements and restrictions as well as a comprehensive list of dutiable and duty-free goods allowed into India, refer to  https://www.cbic.gov.in/ resources/htdocs-cbec/baggage- rules.pdf .

Alcohol: The laws governing alcohol consumption vary from state to state, and it is prohibited in some.  Travellers should seek advice from your local travel agent, hotel or the local authorities before visiting such places.

Currency: The withdrawal of the old 500 and 1000-Indian banknotes was announced by the Indian government in November 2016.  It is no longer possible for non-Indian nationals to exchange these old notes.  Travellers can refer to the Reserve Bank of India for more information and advice.

Travel restrictions around designated tribal areas:  The movement of tourists around designated Restricted or Protected Areas requires permission from the Indian authorities.  The list of areas can be obtained from the Bureau of Immigration .  Travellers should seek advice from the High Commission of India to Singapore when planning to visit these areas.

Additional Information

Natural disasters: India is susceptible to natural disasters like monsoons, cyclones and earthquakes.  There can be widespread disruptions to services when they occur.  Travellers can monitor the media and the India Meteorological Department website  for updates.

Mosquito-borne diseases:  Malaria is a risk in parts of India, including in major cities.  Dengue fever and Chikungunya fever are quite prevalent.  Travellers should take precaution against mosquito-borne illnesses:

  • Make sure that your accommodation is mosquito-proof, such as through the presence of mosquito nets or screen doors.
  • Take measures to avoid insect bites.  Use insect repellent and wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing.  Avoid outdoors at dawn and dusk.
  • Discuss your travel plans and vaccination needs with your doctor prior to travel.

Travellers may refer to this guide for more information on protection against mosquitos.

General Travel Advice

Overseas Travel – Be Informed & Be Safe [Updated on 5 February 2024]

Singaporeans planning overseas travel are reminded to take the necessary precautions, including being prepared to deal with accidents, natural disasters or terrorist attacks. Singaporeans are also reminded to be familiar with your destination’s local laws, customs, and COVID-19 regulations.

Demonstrations do occur in major cities across the world. Such demonstrations can sometimes escalate into violence. It is important for Singaporeans to keep abreast of local news, avoid any protests or demonstrations and heed the advice of the local authorities.

When participating in outdoor leisure activities overseas, Singaporeans should be mindful that certain sporting activities, especially in open seas, may carry risks. Besides ensuring that one has the physical competencies and appropriate condition to undertake the activity, every effort should be made to ascertain if the trip organiser or guide is reliable and competent, and that appropriate safety and contingency plans are in place. When in doubt, Singaporeans should consult the relevant professional bodies or sporting associations for specific advice.

For those planning to travel, here are some tips:

Before travelling

  • Familiarise yourself with our network of overseas missions.
  • Purchase comprehensive travel insurance and be familiar with the terms and coverage.
  • Equip yourself with research about your destination’s entry requirements, current situation, local laws and customs.
  • eRegister with us on our website ( www.mfa.gov.sg ) so that we may reach out to you during an emergency.

While travelling

  • Always take care of your personal safety, remain vigilant and monitor local weather news, advisories, and security developments.
  • Exercise caution around large gatherings and avoid locations known for demonstrations or disturbances.
  • Be prepared for possible delays and last-minute changes in travel plans especially during unforeseen events such as natural disasters, social unrest or terror attacks.
  • Stay connected with your friends and family. Inform them of your whereabouts and provide them with your overseas contact details.
  • In the event that you require consular assistance, please contact the nearest Singapore Overseas Mission or call the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Duty Office at +65 6379 8800/+65 6379 8855.

Advisory: Email Scams

There have been reports of individuals receiving scam emails/messages purportedly sent from friends in distress overseas. These emails/messages typically originate from an email address/social media known to the receiver bearing claims of the sender getting into trouble overseas and urgently requesting financial assistance. The sender would also claim to have approached a Singapore Embassy/Consulate and the local Police for help to no avail.

MFA takes the safety of all Singaporeans very seriously.  Singaporeans in distress approaching our Overseas Missions for assistance will be rendered with all necessary consular assistance.  If you receive such emails/messages from purported friends seeking funds transfers, we strongly advise you to call them first to verify the authenticity of the emails/messages before responding to their request.  It is also not advisable to give out any personal information such as NRIC/passport numbers, address, telephone number, etc.  Any form of reply, even one of non-interest, could result in more unsolicited emails.  Members of the public who suspect that they have fallen prey to such scams should report the matter to the Police immediately.  Should Singaporeans abroad require consular assistance, they can contact the nearest Singapore Overseas  Mission  or call the Ministry of Foreign Affairs 24-hr Duty Office at +65 6379 8800/+65 6379 8855.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is a ministry of the Government of Singapore responsible for conducting and managing diplomatic relations between Singapore and other countries and regions.

Singapore Tourism Board launches new campaign for India

Whatsapp

India’s outbound tourism market is expected to hit $9 billion by 2025. An estimated 25 million Indians traveled overseas in 2017. India has 28 million passport holders who are potential travelers

India has been one of the top source markets for visitor arrivals into Singapore and family travel has featured highly as an audience segment.

NEW DELHI: It is nearly time for Indian families to embark on summer holiday travels, and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and Singapore Airlines along with their destination partners, have announced a campaign to welcome back Indian families to the popular island destination.

The campaign, “Enjoy Your Family Times Now in Singapore" presents a host of reimagined family experiences for the school holiday season.

India has been one of the top source markets for visitor arrivals into Singapore and family travel has featured highly as an audience segment.

With the easing of covid-induced travel curbs, fully vaccinated travellers will not have to quarantine when they arrive in Singapore and will only need to present a negative pre-departure covid test upon arrival. The covid safety protocols have also been relaxed significantly in the city, it said in a statement.

The campaign has been curated keeping in mind the traditional travel peak during school holidays and will run from mid-April to 30 June 2022. Indian family travellers will also get deals on airfares on Singapore Airlines, for children below 12 years of age.

The promotion includes offers from Sentosa Development Corporation, Resorts World Sentosa, Gardens by the Bay, Mandai Wildlife Group, Marina Bay Sands, Jewel Changi Airport and travel experiences platform Pelago, etc.

GB Srithar, regional director, India, Middle East & South Asia, said, “Singapore is a top-of-mind family destination among Indian travellers…After a hiatus of two years, we are excited to invite Indian travellers to a reimagined Singapore with new and familiar favourite experiences with top notch hygiene and safety standards."

This is STB India’s first major campaign post-pandemic involving several fulfillment partners like Pelago, MakeMyTrip, EaseMyTrip, Thomas Cook, SOTC and FCM to promote the campaign here.

Sy Yen Chen, General Manager India for Singapore Airlines, added, “With international travel having resumed from India, it is once again possible for families to plan a summer vacation together, and what better destination than Singapore?…We are seeing strong demand for travel to Singapore, and our special 50% discount on airfares for children."

Chew Tiong Heng, Divisional Director, Business and Experience Development, Sentosa Development Corp., said, “…With new attractions that were only recently unveiled and our year-long celebration of Sentosa’s 50th anniversary, visitors can look forward to a refreshed Sentosa, with even more diverse offerings to delight all age groups."

Jean Choi, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer, Mandai Wildlife Group, said, “While international borders were closed, we took the opportunity to innovate and refresh the offerings at our parks. We are excited to welcome travellers from India again and for them to experience meaningful encounters with our animal family after a gap of two years."

Some attractions are offering 50% discount on admission fees for children under 12 years including Singapore Zoo, River Wonders, Night Safari, Jurong Bird Park, Gardens by the Bay (Flower Dome, Cloud Forest and Floral Fantasy), SkyPark at Marina Bay Sands, Changi Experience Studio and various attractions on Sentosa island including iFly, Madame Tussauds, Luge and Adventure Cove Waterpark at Resorts World Sentosa etc.

According to a report published by the government titled ‘Outbound Travel & Tourism International’, India’s outbound tourism market is expected to hit $9 billion by 2025. An estimated 25 million Indians traveled overseas in 2017. India has 28 million passport holders who are potential travelers. Europe commands about 20% of all Indian outbound departures.

Singapore tourism numbers soar as it commits to remaining open, Indians visitors ranked first

Popular tourist services like open top tour buses and trishaws (three-wheeler bicycles with a seat by the side) have suddenly made an appearance in Suntec City and Rochor Road respectively. A sight last seen pre-COVID.

Singapore tourism numbers have been climbing since it re-opened its borders to foreign visitors earlier this year with Indians making the largest number of visitors by country of origin. The island city-state now accepts all fully vaccinated travellers from around the world without any need for testing or quarantine. Looking around the tourist areas, one can see signs of tourists returning and various businesses gearing up for more visitors from abroad.

Indeed, April saw tourist arrivals more than double from March's figure of 121,200 to 294,200. This is based on numbers published by the Singapore Tourism Board. However, this is still a far cry from the 1.638 million average monthly visitors Singapore received in the last pre-COVID year in 2019. Over 300,000 of these came from China , Singapore largest tourism source pre-pandemic, which is still largely closed to travel.

Indians are making up for the missing Chinese and have since the beginning of the year, been the largest group of nationals travelling to Singapore. About 95,500 Indians entered Singapore from January to April. Second are Indonesians at 89,700 and third, Malaysians with 45,600 making the trip by air to Singapore. In these numbers, Singapore does not count Malaysians coming into the country by the land border which has now fully re-opened as the majority of those who use this route, come daily to study or to work.

Passenger traffic at Changi Airport is expected to reach more than 40 percent of pre-COVID levels this month compared with less than 20 percent in March. This number is expected to reach 50 percent in the coming months with one of the two terminals closed since COVID preparing to re-open. Changi Airport has four terminals and is currently operating just two of them.

Tourist numbers are rising so rapidly that travel related firms and those providing services to visitors like restaurants are struggling to keep up with the demand. Customers have been complaining about poor service due to the lack of service staff. The Singapore government is at the moment trying to help firms hire enough people to cope.

Little India in Serangoon Road is beginning to buzz again and is starting to burst over its seams with people especially during the weekends when migrant workers have their off days.

Until recently, there was a restriction on the number of migrant workers allowed to leave their dormitories for recreation. This was due to fears of an uncontrolled outbreak within the small quarters the workers live in. During the early phase of the pandemic, Singapore had a vast outbreak within the worker dormitories which dominated the COVID cases on the island for a period and led to criticism that the government acted too slowly.

However, this and other restrictions were lifted as the island city grew in confidence in its ability to cope with the coronavirus as more than 90 percent of its residents are now fully vaccinated and 75 percent have received a booster. COVID cases are now hovering between 2,000 and 3,000 after spiking to almost 20,000 in February. Hospitalisation rates are low - well below 100 cases for a population of around 5.6 million.

In a Bloomberg interview on the side of the Changi Aviation Summit, Singapore's Transport Minister S Iswaran said that Singapore will strive to keep its borders open and stay connected to the rest of world even if a new variant of Covid-19 emerges.

"We've all learned to adapt," the Minister was quoted as saying. "We have more tools in the toolkit. It's not as if you always only have a hammer. Now I've got you know, a wrench and a screwdriver and all kinds of other things as well. It really comes down to an assessment of the situation and the risk and then to take a calibrated response."

Minister Iswaran added that optimism is returning to the travel industry, but it is tempered by some challenges as companies scale up operations. He said that this is a challenge of transition, and the government is working hard at the system level and with aviation stakeholders to make sure Changi Airport is well prepared for the transition.

One of the companies benefiting from Singapore's re-opening is its flag carrier Singapore Airlines.

Last week, during its annual financial reporting, the airline reported that it narrowed losses in the second fiscal half year which ended in March. For the entire year, it posted a net loss of SGD 962 million (USD 697 million) for the year, an improvement of 77.5 percent or SGD 3,309 million (USD 2,398 million). It had a profitable fourth quarter.

Singapore Airlines said that it carried 1.45 million passengers in April, the most since the pandemic. As international borders re-open and people begin to travel again, the airline expects to reach 61 percent of pre-COVID passenger capacity by June and around 67 percent of pre-COVID levels by September. By September, it also expects to server over 70 percent of its pre-COVID destinations.

Profiling India-Singapore Bilateral Trade and Investment Relations

India and Singapore share close ties, supported by the India-Singapore Strategic Partnership. During FY 2021-22, Singapore accounted for over one-fourth of India’s trade with Southeast Asia, reflecting the success of the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) between the two countries. Singapore continues to be India’s largest source of foreign direct investment, with Singaporean firms actively participating in urban planning and infrastructure projects across India. In this article, we analyze the current trade and investment trends between India and Singapore.

Singapore is a significant economic partner for India, with bilateral relations underpinned by the India-Singapore Strategic Partnership. In the financial year (FY) 2022, Singapore accounted for 27.3 percent of India’s overall trade with the ASEAN region, making it one of the country’s largest trade and investment partners in the region. The Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA), which came into effect in 2005, serves as a crucial anchor for the economic engagement between India and Singapore.

Singapore has been the leading source of foreign direct investment (FDI) into India, contributing almost 23 percent of the total FDI inflows over the last two decades, with a total investment of approximately US$140.98 billion.

Overview of the India-Singapore bilateral relationship framework

Underpinned by shared values and economic opportunities, India and Singapore enjoy a multifaceted bilateral relationship. The two countries have extensive political and defense ties, growing economic and technological cooperation, and vibrant cultural and human links. Both countries are members of several forums, including the East Asia Summit, G20 , Commonwealth, IORA (Indian Ocean Rim Association), and IONS (Indian Ocean Naval Symposium), reflecting their convergence on international issues.

To provide a larger framework for activities, the two countries have concluded several agreements, including the CECA, the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement , the Bilateral Air Services Agreement, the Defense Cooperation Agreement, the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty, and the Mutual Recognition Agreement on Nursing. The Joint Ministerial Committee and India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable are among the more than 20 regular bilateral mechanisms, dialogues, and exercises.

The inaugural meeting of the India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable took place in September 2022 in New Delhi, aimed at taking bilateral relations to new heights. The discussion focused on existing and emerging areas of cooperation such as digital connectivity , fintech , the green economy , green hydrogen , skill development, and food security. The meeting paved the way for further enhancing the strategic partnership between India and Singapore. During the visit, a Fintech Cooperation Agreement was signed between the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and the International Financial Services Centers Authority (IFSCA) in Gujarat.

Trends in India-Singapore trade relations

The India-Singapore CECA has played a significant role in boosting bilateral trade, which expanded from US$6.7 billion in FY 2005 to US$30.11 billion in FY 2022. Singapore is India’s sixth largest trade partner, accounting for 2.9 percent of India’s overall trade, while India is Singapore’s 12th largest trade partner with a 2.3 percent share in Singapore’s overall trade.

Bilateral trade has continued to grow, with Singapore’s imports from India increasing by 42.5 percent to US$18.96 billion and Indian exports to Singapore totaling US$11.15 billion, up by 28.53 percent in FY 2022.

India and Singapore’s bilateral trade in FY 2023 (April to August 2022) amounted to US$14.75 billion, indicating a significant surge of 24.7 percent as compared to the previous year’s corresponding period, which was recorded at US$11.82 billion. However, India’s exports to Singapore during the same period saw a slight decline of 2.2 percent, from US$5.3 billion in FY 2022 (April–August) to US$5.2 billion in FY 2023 (April–August). Meanwhile, India’s imports from Singapore experienced substantial growth of 46.8 percent, from US$6.5 billion in April–August 2022 to US$9.6 billion during the same period in FY 2023.

India-Singapore Trade Trends

Major exports from India to Singapore

In FY 2022, India exported a total of 5,198 commodities to Singapore, generating export revenue of US$11.15 billion. Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products, bituminous substances, and mineral waxes were among the major items exported from India to Singapore, accounting for US$6,100.89 million of total export revenue, followed by nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery, mechanical appliances, and their parts, accounting for US$595.71 million.

During the first eight months of FY 2022 (April to November 2021), India’s exports to Singapore amounted to US$8.01 billion. Petroleum products (US$3,200 million) and ships, boats, and floating structures (US$936 million) were among the top commodities exported during this period.

Major imports by India from Singapore

In FY 2022, India received 4,211 commodities totaling US$19.17 billion from Singapore. Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery, and mechanical appliances dominated India’s import basket from Singapore in terms of value, amounting to US$3,460.44 million, followed by electrical machinery and equipment and sound and TV recorders and reproducers, valued at US$3,147.77 million.

Between April and November 2022, India’s imports from Singapore totaled US$14.94 billion, with coal, coke, and briquettes worth US$1,999 million, followed by electronic components worth US$1,520 million, among other things.

Economic ties and investment opportunities between India and Singapore

Singapore remains the largest source of FDI into India, with a total FDI inflow of US$15.87 billion in FY 2022. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Singapore’s cumulative FDI inflows into India were recorded at US$136.65 billion for the April 2000 to June 2022 period.

Additionally, Singapore is a significant source of external commercial borrowings and foreign portfolio investments for India. The top sectors attracting FDI equity inflows from Singapore include services, computer software and hardware, trading, telecommunications, and drugs and pharmaceuticals.

On the other hand, India’s cumulative outward FDI to Singapore reached US$82.33 billion in the January 2008 to October 2022 period, with the outward Indian FDI to Singapore standing at US$7.18 billion in FY 2022 and US$3.49 billion in FY 2021.

More than 9000 Indian companies are registered in Singapore, with notable public sector units, banks, and trade organizations like India Tourism, CII, FICCI, etc. having their offices there.

Over 440 companies from Singapore are registered in India, with two banks, Enterprise Singapore, the Economic Development Board, and the Singapore Tourism Board having offices here.

India-Singapore connectivity and tourism

In 2005, the Air Services Agreement between India and Singapore was revised, leading to an increase in connectivity between the two countries. As of now, there are eight airlines operating 500 weekly flights connecting Singapore with 15 Indian cities. Vistara, a joint venture between Singapore Airlines and Tata Group, and GoAir have also launched international flights from Singapore to Indian cities, further boosting connectivity.

On November 29, SIA announced it would convert its 49 percent stake in Vistara into a 20 percent stake in the new Air India Group, with additional US$250 million used to acquire another five percent. SIA could inject up to a further US$615 million after the merger is completed – projected to be by March 2024. This additional investment will depend on the group’s business plan and SIA’s funding options.

SIA has revealed plans to convert its 49 percent stake in Vistara into a 20 percent stake in the new Air India Group, with an extra US$250 million allocated to acquire a further 5 percent. An additional investment of up to US$615 million could be made by SIA after the merger’s completion, contingent on the enlarged Air India group’s business plan and SIA’s funding options. The merger is expected to be finalized by March 2024.

In 2019, India was the third-largest source of tourism for Singapore, with 1.41 million Indian tourists visiting the country. Post COVID, Indian tourists have become the second largest source of visitors to Singapore . The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) notes that “612,300 visitors from India arrived in Singapore up to November 2022”. Indians also stay the longest in Singapore at 8.61 days as compared to the average (5.19 days).

Fintech and innovation, cross-border payments

Cooperation in the areas of technology, innovation, fintech, and startups has also grown between India and Singapore. As of 2023, Singapore has successfully embraced different forms of Indian digital payment systems like RuPay, UPI (Unified Payments Interface) , etc.

In July 2022, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) signed an agreement with the Monetary Authority of Singapore to implement interoperability between UPI and PayNow. The UPI-PayNow linkage will enable users of each of the two fast payment systems to make instant, low-cost fund transfers on a reciprocal basis without a need to get onboarded onto the other payment system.

PayNow is the fast payment system of Singapore, which enables peer-to-peer funds transfer services available to retail customers through participating banks and Non-Bank Financial Institutions (NFIs) in the country. It enables users to send and receive instant funds from one bank or e-wallet account to another in Singapore by using just their mobile number, Singapore NRIC/FIN, or VPA.

Singaporean firms collaborate on urban planning and infrastructure projects

Singaporean companies have been taking a leading role in a range of smart city initiatives across India, partnering with local governments and private enterprises in various urban planning, logistics , and infrastructure projects . These include collaborations with Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Maharashtra on Master Plans for townships, as well as investment in the country’s aviation sector .

Furthermore, private and public sector institutions, including NITI Aayog, signed three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Singapore in 2018, focusing on urban and rural development. Singaporean companies have also been awarded contracts to develop homes and invest in India’s airport sector, demonstrating their commitment to India’s growth and development.

What Is Travel Insurance? An Indian’s Safety Net Abroad

Shishira & Navneeth

30sec Snapshot

Singapore’s travel guidelines include COVID-19 restrictions, entry requirements based on country of origin, vaccination and testing rules, potential quarantine, health declarations, and adherence to public health measures. Check official sources for updates before travelling.

Singapore has emerged as a popular travel destination for Indians. The vibrant blend of cultures, impeccable cleanliness, stunning architecture, and delectable cuisine, along with the unique range of Singapore tourist attractions, appeal to travellers from all walks of life. However, before you embark on your Singapore adventure, it’s crucial to be familiar with the Singapore travel guidelines and requirements to ensure a hassle-free trip.

And, of course, that begins with a Visa! To begin with, obtaining a visa is essential for Indian travellers visiting Singapore. The process is straightforward, and you can either apply through the traditional offline method or opt for the convenient e-Visa facility. It’s advisable to apply well in advance to avoid any last-minute complications.

Types of Singapore Visas

Let’s get right in by diving into the visa requirements for Indian travellers heading to this vibrant city-state. The Singapore travel guidelines offer various types of visas depending on the purpose of your visit. So, let’s explore the options and what you need to prepare.

Tourist Visa

Business visa, flights and stays in singapore, finding affordable flights:.

Singapore tourism begins at the airport! So pick your flight as per these recommendations –

  • Be Flexible with Dates and Times : Save by travelling during off-peak seasons or weekdays and opt for red-eye (early morning or late-night) flights.
  • Set Fare Alerts : Get notified when flight prices drop, ensuring you grab the best deals available. Easily do this on Google flights.
  • Compare Prices : Utilise flight comparison websites and check official airline sites for exclusive deals.
  • Look for Airline Sales and Promotions : Keep an eye on limited-time offers and promotions for significant savings.
  • Consider Layovers : Explore flights with layovers for potentially cheaper options, especially if travel time is not a concern.

Choosing Reputable Airlines:

  • Safety and Reputation : Choose airlines with strong safety records.
  • Check for Codeshare Partnerships : Look for carriers with codeshare agreements, ensuring seamless connections and a broader flight network. This means you will get a single PNR ticket from origin to destination even if there is a transit through a third country on the way, and you mostly will not need a transit visa.
  • Consider Baggage Allowance : Consider airlines that align with your luggage needs, especially if you plan to carry extra or oversized baggage.
  • In-Flight Amenities : Research amenities like entertainment, meal options, and seat comfort to enhance your overall travel experience.
  • Loyalty Programs : Join airline loyalty programs for perks like priority boarding, extra baggage allowance, and lounge access, adding value to your travels.

Options for Luxury to Cheap Accommodation in Singapore:

Guesthouses and hostels, serviced apartments, boutique hotels, homestays and vacation rentals.

Enjoy zero forex markup and 3-5% cashback on international transactions.
