Who Won the 2023 Tour de France?

A stage-by-stage guide to the leader of the General Classification of the men’s Tour.

Denmark's Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) won the yellow jersey as the overall winner of the 2023 Tour de France. The 26-year-old won the Tour for the second straight season, becoming the 21st rider in history to win the race multiple times. Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), another two-time TdF winner, finished second for the second straight season, 7 minutes, 29 seconds behind Vingegaard. Pogačar’s UAE Team Emirates teammate Adam Yates was third overall, 10 minutes, 56 seconds behind the winner, to round out the podium of the Tour de France.

Here’s a look at how the General Classification played out in every stage of the 2023 Tour de France.

2023 Tour de France Champion - Jonas Vingegaard

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) officially won the 2023 Tour de France after safely finishing Stage 21 on Sunday, July 23. For the second straight year, Vingegaard was the top General Classification rider at the Tour. This time, he beat second place Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) by 7:29, the largest margin of victory in the GC since Vincenzo Nibali won by 7:37 in 2014.

Vingegaard first claimed the yellow jersey after Stage 6 and never relinquished it. He led by 25 seconds over Pogačar at that point, but Pogačar slowly but surely cut into that advantage. That is, until Stage 16, when Vingegaard rode a brilliant time trial to drive his lead over Pogačar to 1:48. The next day on Stage 17, Vingegaard further solidified his lead after Pogačar cracked in the high mountains, driving Vingegaard’s lead well past seven minutes. He held that lead through the finish in Paris on Sunday. Pogačar, meanwhile, won the white jersey as the best young rider (25 years or younger) in the Tour de France. He wins white for a record-breaking fourth time.

Pogačar wasn’t the only UAE Team Emirates rider on the podium. Adam Yates, who held the yellow jersey from Stage 2 through Stage 5, finished third overall, 10:56 behind the leader. His twin brother, Simon Yates (Jayco-AlUla), finished fourth overall, 12:23 back. Carlos Rodriguez (INEOS Grenadiers) was fifth, 13:17 back.

Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninick) won the green jersey as the winner of the points classification. Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) won the polka jersey, winning the King of the Mountains classification. Vingegaard’s Jumbo-Visma team won the team classification, with the best time of their team’s top three riders.

Stage 20 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) will wear the yellow jersey on the Champs-Élysées on Sunday as the leader of the 2023 Tour de France. Vingegaard is set to win his second straight Tour de France—barring diaster or as he said, “anything stupid—on the 21st and final stage.

Vingegaard finished second on Saturday’s Stage 20 with the same time as his top rival Tadej Pogačar. Pogačar claimed the stage win, but will have to settle for second to Vingegaard for a second straight year. This year, Vingegaard holds a 7 minute, 35 second advantage on Pogačar.

Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) remains in third overall, 10:56 back of the yellow jersey to get the final podium spot. His twin brother Simon Yates (Jayco-AlUla) moved up a spot to fourth on Saturday. He’s 12:23 back of the lead. Carlos Rodriguez (INEOS Grenadiers) rounds out the top five, losing a spot on Stage 20 after crashing early in the stage. He’s 12:57 behind the leader.

Stage 19 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) leads the 2023 Tour de France through 19 stages. Stage 19 was packed with a lot of exciting drama up front, but the General Classification contenders stayed well behind the action well over 13 minutes behind the stage winner.

Vingegaard continues to lead Tadej Pogačar (Team UAE Emirates) by 7:35. Adam Yates (also from UAE Team Emirates) is in third place overall, 10:45 back of the lead.

Stage 18 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) remains in the lead of the 2023 Tour de France after Stage 18. Thursday’s stage was a day for the sprinters (even though the breakaway managed to barely survive), so there were no changes as far as the GC situation. Stage 18 comes a day after Vingegaard solidified his spot atop the yellow jersey standings.

Vingegaard leads second place Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) by 7:35. Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) is in third, 10:45 behind the leader, and Carlos Rodriguez (INEOS Grenadiers) is in fourth, 12:01 behind. With three stages to go, Vingegaard surely can taste his second straight Tour victory.

Stage 17 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) leads the 2023 Tour de France, furthering his advantage on Stage 17. Vingegaard now leads second place Tadej Pogačar by 7 minutes, 37 seconds after leading by just 10 seconds two stages prior. Pogačar cracked in a big way on Wednesday, losing major time, while Vingegaard excelled once again in the mountains to gain massive amounts of time on his closest rival and pre-Tour co-favorite.

Vingegaard made major gains during the Stage 16 individual time trial, and then on Wednesday he delivered a virtual punishing blow to Pogačar’s yellow jersey hopes. It seemed during the Tour’s second week that Pogačar had a slight upperhand on Vingegaard. But it wasn’t to be as the defending champion through down his time trial and then big mountain ride on consecutive days. That changed the Tour from one of the closest of all-time to the largest leading margin since 2014.

There are four stages still remaining, but barring something completely unexpected, Vingegaard will win the Tour de France once again by the end of the day on Sunday.

Stage 16 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) leads the General Classification of the 2023 Tour de France after Stage 16. Vingegaard extended his hold on the yellow jersey on Tuesday on an individual time trial. The maillot jaune crushed the ITT, winning the stage by 1:38 and extending his GC lead to 1:48 over second place Tadej Pogačar, his top rival.

Vingegaard was magnificent on the time trial, putting time into Pogačar from the start all the way to the finish. It’s the first time this Tour that one of the co-favorites put a major amount of time into the other, as Vingegaard has firmly asserted himself as the one to beat over the remaining five stages.

Elsewhere in the GC battle for the podium, Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) moved up from fourth to third place in the standings. Yates supplanted Carlos Rodriguez (INEOS Grenadiers) after the time trial. Yates, Pogačar’s teammate, is 8:52 behind the yellow jersey Vingegaard. Rodriguez is now in fourth place, 8:57 behind Vingegaard. Just five seconds separates Yates and Rodriguez, so it should be an exciting matchup between those two for the third and final podium spot in the GC.

Stage 15 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) remains in the yellow jersey after Stage 15 of the 2023 Tour de France. Vingegaard holds a 10-second lead over Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) after another tough mountain stage. Ultimately, the gap between the two GC favorites remained unchanged, as the two riders finished the stage together. The Tour heads into a Monday rest day before the final week begins, and very little has separated Vingegaard and Pogačar.

Carlos Rodriguez (INEOS Grenadiers) was able to extend his hold on the third place podium spot after Stage 15. Rodriguez finished the stage ahead of Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe), who he started the day just one second ahead of. Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) moved up ahead of Hindley for fourth place overall.

Stage 14 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) still leads the 2023 Tour de France after a wild Stage 14. Vingegaard now holds a 10-second advantage on Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates). Carlos Rodriguez (INEOS Grenadiers) moves up to third place in the GC after winning Stage 14. He’s now 4:43 behind the yellow jersey. Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe) moves to fourth place in the GC, 4:44 back of the lead. Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) is in fifth place, 5:20 behind.

Stage 14 only saw a change of one single second among the two leaders, Vingegaard and Pogačar, but that didn’t mean there weren’t plenty of fireworks. Jumbo-Visma pushed the pace to make it hard on Pogačar, but Pogačar looked to be relatively unfazed by it all. The stage proved that the battle for the yellow jersey will go down to the bitter end between Vingegaard and Pogačar.

Stage 13 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) held onto the yellow jersey as the leader of the 2023 Tour de France. But the gap between the defending champion and Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) has narrowed after the Slovenian, winner of the Tour in 2020 and 2021, attacked and then gapped the Dane about 400 meters from the top of the “Beyond Category” Col du Grand Colombier at the end of Stage 14.

Pogačar crossed the line 4 seconds ahead of Vingegaard and in doing so finished third on the stage to take a 4-second time bonus, which cut Vingegaard’s overall advantage to just 9 seconds. With two days in the Alps before Monday’s rest day, expect more fireworks as these two continue their intense fight to win the 2023 Tour de France.

A little less than a minute before the reignition of the Tour’s GC battle, Poland’s Michal Kwiatkowski (INEOS Grenadiers) won the stage after spending all day in the breakaway and attacking what was left of it on the lower slopes of the Grand Colombier. A super-domestique with an impressive resume of his own, the 33-year-old proved too strong for UAE Team Emirates to catch, holding-off Belgium’s Maxim Van Gils (Lotto-Soudal) and then Pogačar to take the second Tour de France stage victory of his career.

Stage 12 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) remained in the yellow jersey after a somewhat stressful Stage 12 of the Tour de France. Despite the stress, the GC picture remained mostly unchanged. Vingegaard remains 17 seconds ahead of second place Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates). Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe) is third overall in the GC, 2:40 back.

Thibaut Pinot made a jump into the top ten of the GC, going from 15th to tenth after gaining time on the other GC contenders in the breakaway on Thursday.

Stage 11 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) continues to lead the 2023 Tour de France after 11 stages. Stage 11 saw no change to the General Classification on a sprint stage, despite a relatively tricky road into the finish.

Vingegaard remains 17 seconds ahead of Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) for the lead in the yellow jersey competition. Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe) is in third, holding down the final podium spot, 2:40 behind Vingegaard. Tuesday’s flat stage is the last true sprinter’s stage until perhaps Stage 19—or even the final Stage 21 in Paris—so we can expect an eventful next week or so as far as the GC is concerned.

Stage 10 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) held onto the yellow leader’s jersey after Stage 10 of the 2023 Tour de France, leading Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) by 17 seconds. Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe) remains in third place, 2:40 behind Vingegaard. These standings should stay the same after Stage 11, which will likely favor the sprinters.

Stage 10 didn’t see any major GC moves, but that didn’t mean it was an easy day in the saddle for the yellow jersey hopefuls.The peloton held the breakaway in check throughout the day, never giving them too much time. Ultimately, there weren’t any moves on the stage after the rest day from Vingegaard or Pogačar.

Stage 9 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) held onto his lead in the 2023 Tour de France, but lost time to Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) at the end of Sunday’s Stage 9. The stage finished atop the Hors Categorie (“Beyond Category”) Puy de Dôme, an extinct volcano rising above the Massif Central that the Tour hasn’t been climbed by the Tour since 1988.Canada’s Mike Woods (Israel-PremierTech) won the stage.

The former world class distance runner paced himself perfectly from the base of the climb, catching multiple riders left from the day’s big breakaway on the way to his first Tour de France stage victory. France’s Pierre Latour (TotalEnergies) finished second, and Slovenia’s Matej Mohorič (Bahrain Victorious) finished third. But the battle to win the Tour’s General Classification took place over eight minutes later, as Vingegaard and Pogačar continued their duel on the climb’s upper slopes.

Jumbo-Visma did a terrific job of whittling down to the yellow jersey group, but it was Pogačar who took advantage pulling away from Vingegaard about 1,400meters from the summit finish. Vingegaard only lost 8 seconds to the Slovenian, but heading into the first rest day, he now leads the Tour by just 17 seconds. The race to win the 2023 Tour de France is far from over.

Stage 8 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

There was once again no change in the overall, as Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) continues to lead the 2023 Tour de France. The defending champion has a 25-second advantage on Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), as the peloton prepares to head into a big mountain stage on Sunday.

Simon Yates (Jayco–AlUla) was the lone GC contender to lose time on Stage 8, crashing with about 6K to go in the stage, outside of the 3K safe zone. Yates went from being 3:14 down from the leader Vingegaard to 4:01 after Saturday.

Stage 7 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) enjoyed his first day in the yellow leader’s jersey during Stage 7 at the 2023 Tour de France. It was a relatively easy day—despite some intense heat—for the GC contenders in the peloton on Friday’s stage designed for the sprinters.

Vingegaard continues to hold a 25-second GC lead over Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates). The two riders will likely see a major GC clash again on Sunday’s Stage 9 mountain stage. Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe) is 1:34 behind the yellow jersey Vingegaard in third overall.

Stage 6 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) took over the lead of the 2023 Tour de France after an eventful Stage 6 that saw the GC contenders battle it out for the stage win and crucial seconds. Vingegaard will wear the yellow jersey on Friday’s Stage 7. He leads second place Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) by 25 seconds in the overall standings after Pogačar won Stage 6. Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe), who wore the yellow jersey on the day, lost time on Thursday and is now in third place in the GC, 1:34 back of the leader.

After Vingegaard dealt a major blow to Pogačar on Stage 5, Pogačar roared back to capture the stage win and prove that the GC is not over yet. Despite Vingegaard moving into the yellow jersey, Stage 6 was much more defined by Pogačar gaining time on Vingegaard than the changing of the guard in the leader’s jersey. It seemed after Stage 5 that the defending champion Vingegaard was clearly the strongest rider in the peloton once again, but Pogačar, a two-time Tour champion in his own right, showed us that it’s a long way to Paris and it could be a fierce battle all the way to the end.

Stage 5 Leader - Jai Hindley

Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe) took over the lead of the 2023 Tour de France after a brilliant win on Stage 5. Hindley leads the General Classification by 47 seconds (thanks in part to 18 seconds worth of bonuses picked up on Stage 5) over second place overall Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma). Giulio Ciccone (Lidl–Trek) is 1:03 back in third overall and Emanuel Buchmann (Bora–Hansgrohe) is in fourth overall, 1:11 back.

The yellow jersey holder for the first five stages, Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) lost the lead on Wednesday and is now in fifth overall, 1:34 back of the lead. Tadej Pogačar, the co-prerace favorite along with Vingegaard, lost time on Stage 5 and is now in sixth place overall, 1:40 behind the leader Hindley. Vingegaard is 53 seconds ahead of Pogačar.

Stage 5 saw some major GC shakeups. Hindley, the 2022 winner of the Giro d’Italia, sits in yellow with a solid 47-second advantage over Vingegaard. With a grand tour win already under his belt, Hindley has a chance to stay in yellow for a while. Of course, a lot of that depends on the race tactics of Vingegaard and Pogačar, who may likely spar again on a mountainous Stage 6.

Stage 4 Leader - Adam Yates

There was no change in the General Classification standings of the Tour de France after Stage 4. Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) will stay in the yellow jersey another day, holding onto a six second advantage over teammate Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) and his twin brother Simon Yates (Jayco–AlUla).

Stage 5 has a good chance to brings some GC fireworks. Pogačar—in second place overall—has an 11-second advantage over Tour de France co-favorite Jonas Vingegaard, who is in sixth place overall. That could change—one way or the other–on Wednesday.

Stage 3 Leader - Adam Yates

Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) continues to lead the 2023 Tour de France. After the first two stages of the Tour de France brought a ton of fireworks and battles between the General Classification contenders, Stage 3 was the first (mostly) flat day for the sprinters.

Yates remains in the lead of the GC still six seconds up over second place Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) and third place Simon Yates (Jayco-AlUla). There were no significant losses among the contenders on Stage 3.

Stage 2 Leader - Adam Yates

Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) maintained his lead of the 2023 Tour de France after Stage 2. Adam Yates finished 21st on the stage, but finished on the same time as the other top finishers of the day. He now holds the yellow jersey by six seconds over second place Tadej Pogačar, Yates’ UAE Team Emirates teammate. Adam Yates’ twin brother Simon Yates (Jayco-AlUla) is third overall, also six seconds behind.

Pogačar, meanwhile, earned 12 bonus seconds during Stage 2 to widen his lead over GC co-favorite Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma), Vingegaard earned five bonus seconds on the day, and currently sits in sixth place in the yellow jersey competition, 17 seconds behind Yates and 11 seconds back of Pogačar. Stage 2 winner Victory Lafay (Cofidis) is now fourth overall in the GC.

Tour de France bij de NOS

Vanaf 1 juli is het 30 dagen achter elkaar Tour de France bij de NOS. Eerst drie weken de mannen en daarna een dikke week de vrouwen. 

De NOS doet rechtstreeks verslag van de twee wielerrondes in Franrijk. Met live uitzendingen van de etappes op televisie, online, (flits)verslag op de radio en analyses en interviews na afloop van de koers.

Tom Dumoulin nieuwe analist

Tom Dumoulin is een van de analisten tijdens de Tour de France. De oud-winnaar van de Giro d’Italia en drievoudig Touretappewinnaar zal zowel aan de finish staan tijdens live-uitzendingen, als aan tafel zitten in NOS De Avondetappe . Het analistenteam van de NOS bestaat deze Tour uit Stef Clement, Michael Boogerd, Roxane Knetemann, Marcel Kittel en Tom Dumoulin.

Bekijk de Tour de France live via de NOS Smart TV-app

De live touruitzendingen van de NOS zijn rechtstreeks te streamen via de vernieuwde Smart TV app. In de NOS Smart TV-app wordt het eenvoudiger alle live-uitzendingen van de NOS op je Smart TV te bekijken. Zowel de live-uitzendingen die ook op televisie te zien zijn als de livestreams die de NOS online aanbiedt. Ook zijn de laatste Touruitzendingen, waaronder NOS De Avondetappe in de Smart TV app terug te kijken. Verder is er een handige agenda met een overzicht van de NOS uitzendingen.

Dates: July 1 - July 23 Stages:  21 Rest days: 2 Start:  Bilbao, Spain (Basque Country) Finish:  Paris, France

The 2023 Tour de France will take place July 1-23. The 110th edition of the race starts in Bilbao, Spain before crossing back into France on stage 3. In total there are 21 days of racing, two rest-days, and the final stage in Paris on July 23.

The complete race route for the 2023 Tour de France was unveiled in Paris on October 26 with Mark Cavendish , Tom Pidcock and Tadej Pogačar all in attendance.

Tour de France 2023 contenders

Defending champion Jonas Vingegaard ( Jumbo-Visma ) has not yet confirmed his participation in the 2023 Tour de France but it's increasingly likely that the Danish rider will be on the startline on July 1. He will go up against two-time Tour de France winner Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), who won the race in 2020 and 2021.

EF Education-EasyPost are likely to send new signing Richard Carapaz to the race, while Ineos Grenadiers have options in Tom Pidcock , Dani Martinez , and former winner Egan Bernal . The latter has already hinted that he would like to race the Tour de France in 2023 after returning from injury.

Other riders who are set to be on the start line include Romain Bardet , Simon Yates , David Gaudu , Jai Hindley , and Ben O'Connor .

Tour de France 2023 sprinters

There are between 7 and 8 stages suited to the sprinters in the 2023 Tour de France. Mark Cavendish is hoping to return to the race after a year's absence as he looks to break Eddy Merckx's record of 34 stage wins.

Jasper Philipsen, Sam Bennett, Caleb Ewan, Fernando Gaviria, Dylan Groenewegan and Fabio Jakobsen , are all likely to take part. Although not a pure sprinter, Wout van Aert is set to race as he looks to defend his crown in the points classification.

How to watch the Tour de France Femmes in 2023

Outside the United States and Canada GCN+ will show the race in Europe, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Eurosport will show the race in Europe. Other options include Rai Sport in Italy, L'Equipe TV in France, and Sporza in Belgium.

Jonas Vingegaard Wins 2023 Tour de France

The 2023 Tour de France has come to an end with a back-to-back championship. Danish rider Jonas Vingegaard won the world’s most famous cycling race for the second year. 

Early reports expected second-place finisher Tadej Pogačar to win this year’s race, which seemed possible in the first two weeks of this year’s tour as he and Vingegaard jockeyed for first place. However, in the final week of the 21 Stage event, Vingegaard dominated the field and became this year’s winner.

The yearly event brings cyclists through France over mountainous terrain, towns, and waterways. The race ends in Paris. 

According to Reuters , Vigegaard says to win the event, racers need to make it the focus of their whole life.

“Last year, I had a lot of injuries and sickness in the spring, and this year I didn’t have anything, which made a big difference. I’m just developing, getting better and better. But it’s not like I’m gaining 20% every year, I’m just getting slightly better,” says Vingegaard. “We all have to make a lot of sacrifices. In a year I’m away from my family for more than 150 days to win races. But when you follow training plans, nutrition and training camps, it gives you confidence because you know you’ll be at your top level.”

Only one American has ever officially won the Tour de France: Greg LeMond, who won three times (1986, 1989,1990). Lance Armstrong was initially crowned the winner seven times, but those wins have since been revoked due to doping scandals.

Following the end of the Tour, the Tour de France Femmes officially kicked off. The women’s race is officially underway and runs until this upcoming Sunday for a total of eight stages.

Tour de France 2023 – Analysing the contenders

Most of the hard work has been done and there is precious little time to conjure up form, condition or confidence for the 2023 Tour de France favourites. The big race, starting in Bilbao on July 1, is almost here.

That means it’s final tune-up time: the Critérium du Dauphiné and Tour de Suisse have given us the final display of form for the WorldTour’s best, with only their final preparations separating them from La Grande Boucle.

As ever, Cyclingnews has its form ranking for the favourites, with regular updates through the season and into the Tour itself.

We rank the Tour de France contenders by their performances and as the months have now trickled down to scant days before the Grand Départ in Bilbao, it's time to run the rule over the contenders for the maillot jaune for a final time.

1. Tadej Pogačar

• Team: UAE Team Emirates
• Tour experience: Winner in 2020 and 2021, runner-up in 2022
• 2023 results: 1st at Jaén Paraíso Interior, 1st with three stage wins at Ruta del Sol, 1st with three stage wins at Paris-Nice, 4th at Milan-San Remo, 3rd at E3 Classic, 1st at Tour of Flanders, 1st at Amstel Gold Race, 1st at La Flèche Wallonne, DNF at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, 1st at Slovenian Nationals Time Trial, 1st at Slovenian Nationals Road Race 

It was a spring campaign for the ages from the voracious and versatile Pogačar. However, it ended unceremoniously when a fractured wrist at Liège-Bastogne-Liège led to several weeks off the bike, though he was soon putting in long indoor training sessions to compensate.

In late May, he went out to Sierra Nevada (later than his teammates) to do more preparation. He then headed to Sestriere for a final bit of training and recon in the rarefied air.

It remains to be seen whether the injury affects him or if his glorious, tiring spring has any impact but Pogačar indicated that he’s not worried in his latest interview with Cyclingnews . The only races on his schedule between Liège and the Grand Départ were the Slovenian national time trial and road race, both of which he won hands down, which hardly augers badly.

Pogačar will have to be at his best to beat Vingegaard, but revenge has likely been on his mind ever since the finale of last year’s race. You’d be a fool to write him off.

• 2023 results: 1st with three stage wins at O Gran Camiño, 3rd at Paris-Nice, 1st with three stage wins at Itzulia Basque Country, 1st with two stage wins at Critérium du Dauphiné

With Pogačar out of racing sight and more out of mind for much of the build-up to the Tour, Jonas Vingegaard was the focal point for rivals and observers alike with his strength and ease. They’re so closely-matched, we’ve put the pair in equal first.

After a three-week altitude camp at Sierra Nevada, he passed his last test at the Critérium du Dauphiné with flying colours, winning a brace of stages and the overall, with the biggest winning margin since Charly Mottet in 1987. As if that wasn’t enough, after the race the defending champion indicated he can still improve.

Back in March, Pogačar got the better of Vingegaard at Paris-Nice . Both he and Pogačar have similar remarkable win rates this year but of course the Tour de France is the one that counts above all others. The form book and results suggest it’ll be their duel for glory. All roads lead to Bilbao and a renewal of hostilities between the two titans of the 2022 edition.

3. Jai Hindley

• Team: Bora-Hansgrohe
• Tour experience: none
• 2023 results: 16th at Tour Down Under, 32nd at Cadel Evans Race, 13th at Volta ao Algarve, 32nd at Ardèche Classic, 53rd at Drôme Classic, 15th at Tirreno-Adriatico, 8th at Volta a Catalunya, 12th at Amstel Gold Race, 83rd at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, 4th at Critérium du Dauphiné

Hindley’s season has shifted up a gear at the perfect time. Following finishes on the fringes at Catalunya and the Amstel Gold Race, he was among the strongest at the Critérium du Dauphiné .

Consistency on the climbs at this mini Tour de France was complemented by one of the best time trial rides of his career, laying the foundations for fourth overall.

With Vingegaard and Pogačar looking like a cut above the rest, it is likely to be a fierce scrap for the third step of the podium. Tour debutant Hindley will have to get through the hubbub of the first week unscathed, but the 2022 Giro d’Italia winner appears to be in pole position to be the best of the rest.

4. Mikel Landa

• Team: Bahrain-Victorious

We’ve been accustomed to Landa lighting up spring stage races, showing his face at Tirreno-Adriatico , the Volta a Catalunya and Itzulia. His steady run of stage race contention, however, came to an end at the Dauphiné with a particularly poor showing in the time trial. The experienced Basque knows what he’s doing and acknowledged he wasn’t in the best shape before the race. Not ideal, but he’s still on course for a high finish at a TT-light Tour de France.

5. David Gaudu

• Team: Groupama-FDJ
• Tour experience: Five appearances, 4th overall in 2022
• 2023 results: 7th at Tour du Var, 2nd at Ardèche Classic, 4th at Drôme Classic, 2nd at Paris-Nice, 4th at Itzulia Basque Country, DNF at Amstel, Flèche and Liège, 30th at Critérium du Dauphiné

Gaudu was off the pace at the Critérium du Dauphiné in the mountains and against the clock. To boot, he copped social media abuse after a few stages. There’s no cause for panic after one poor performance for France’s big hope.

His spring campaign was strong, finishing next best to Tadej Pogačar at Paris-Nice. It also bears remembering that, though he won a stage, Gaudu wasn’t in the frame at last year’s Dauphiné GC either, and that preceded a career-best result.

6. Enric Mas (crashed out on stage 1)

• Team: Movistar
• Tour experience: Four appearances, 5th in 2020, 6th in 2021
• 2023 results: 5th at Ruta del Sol, 6th at Tirreno-Adriatico, 5th at Itzulia Basque Country, 17th at La Flèche Wallonne, DNF at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, 17th at Critérium du Dauphiné

Mas looked like every bit like a Tour de France podium contender eight months ago. He matched his second places in the Vuelta and Il Lombardia with a fan-pleasing, attacking style.

Still, there was little of that on display at the Critérium du Dauphiné. Dropping three minutes to winner Mikkel Bjerg in the time trial was no big surprise; of greater concern was losing nearly that same amount to a flying Vingegaard on the race’s queen stage.

There’s clearly a bit of work to be done to make sure it’s a case of más rather than menos at the Tour de France. Mas wanted to put his COVID-19 abandon of last year’s race well behind him but crashed on stage 1 of the 2023 Tour and was forced out of the race again .

7. Romain Bardet

• Tour experience: Nine appearances, 2nd overall in 2016, 3rd in 2017
•  2023 results: 8th at Tour du Var, 11th at Ardèche Classic, 11th at Drôme Classic, 7th at Paris-Nice, DNF at Volta a Catalunya, 9th at La Flèche Wallonne, 15th at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, 7th at Tour de Romandie

Bardet is Mr. Steady of the stage races, rarely terrible or incandescent. The experienced Frenchman sat fourth overall at the Tour de France last summer until an off-day in the blazing sun to Foix put paid to his podium hopes.

COVID-19 in April didn’t seem to slow him down at the Tour de Romandie , where he was seventh. A fifth place at the Tour de Suisse suggests altitude has honed his condition, and he enters the race as a valuable GC contender for DSM.

8. Ben O'Connor

• Team: AG2R Citroën Team
• Tour experience: Two appearances, 4th and a stage in 2021
• 2023 results: 6th Tour Down Under, 46th Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, 13th Tirreno-Adriatico, 14th Volta a Catalunya, 11th Classic Grand Besançon Doubs, 5th Tour du Jura, 50th Liège-Bastogne-Liège, 3rd Critérium du Dauphiné

The Australian climbs into our top ten after his third place finish at the Critérium du Dauphiné, repeating his result from twelve months ago. Coming off an altitude camp, O’Connor was the surprise factor in the time trial, delivering AG2R-Citroën’s first-ever top-five performance in a WorldTour race against the clock.

Last year’s Tour was a bust for O’Connor , dropped on the cobbled stage and abandoning with a torn glute. The first week, with its hillier Basque Country start, may well suit the rider from Perth better as he hopes to improve on his landmark 2021 showing.

9.   Giulio Ciccone

• Team: Trek-Segafredo
• Tour experience: Two appearances, wore the yellow jersey in 2019
• 2023 results: 2nd and stage win at Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, 5th at Tirreno-Adriatico, 7th and stage win at Volta a Catalunya, 5th at Flèche Wallonne, 13th Liège-Bastogne-Liège, 11th and stage win at Critérium du Dauphiné

After storming the Bastille in Grenoble for triumph on the last day of the Dauphiné, the little Italian surges into our top ten. Ciccone has talked of going for a Tour de France stage victory and the King of the Mountains this summer. Consistency has been his big problem in Grand Tours.

It could be different this summer. Ciccone has had three victories and barely been out of the top 10 in 2023, in spite of COVID-19 dumping him out of a Giro d’Italia team he was due to lead.

His self-belief will be sky high and he’ll be in a positive frame of mind, getting married weeks before the race. With few time trial kilometres in the 2023 race, a top-10 finish is within his reach.

10. Dani Martínez

• Team: Ineos Grenadiers
• Tour experience: Three appearances, stage win and 28th in 2020
• 2023 results: 25th at Vuelta a San Juan, 1st at Volta ao Algarve, 25th at Paris-Nice, 34th at Itzulia Basque Country, 23rd at Critérium du Dauphiné

With the Tour on the horizon, there is no clear leader for Ineos Grenadiers.

Dani Martínez has been targeting that spot since the start of the season, but the last day of the Critérium du Dauphiné likely knocked the Colombian’s confidence. He was the race’s big loser, losing 10 minutes and tumbling down the GC from sixth overall.

A simple jour sans or indicative of a bigger problem? The Colombian was flying on the way to first place at February’s Volta ao Algarve but hasn’t broken the top 10 on GC since.  Martínez has had a poor start to the Tour, losing 3:13 on stage 1 and a further 7:00 on stage 2 to fall out of overall contention.

Third with Geraint Thomas last year, Ineos Grenadiers are at risk of having their most peripheral Grande Boucle in years. But the kids could step up. Tom Pidcock , who finished a disappointing 22nd at the Tour de Suisse, showed his off-road form in recent weeks, winning in Nove Mesto. In an interview with Cyclingnews the Briton laid out his stage goals but was reticent to see himself as a GC contender just yet.

Former Spanish national champion Carlos Rodríguez’s ninth overall in the Alps eclipsed Martínez’s performance. Rodríguez was the silver lining on a poor opening stage for the British team and was the only Ineos rider in the top 10 after the brutal Grand Depart in the Basque Country.

Bubbling under

Put out a search party for Simon Yates. The Jayco-Alula man has not raced since stomach problems forced him to abandon the Tour de Romandie on stage 2. This summer, less is evidently more for the Briton. He is set to go straight from training at altitude to the Grand Départ. He was second at the Tour Down Under and fourth at Paris-Nice, but his form is unknown.

EF Education-EasyPost leader Richard Carapaz was on the attack at the Critérium du Dauphiné and sprinted to second place behind Julian Alaphilippe. The Olympic champion is flying under the radar a little; he’s not finished in the top 10 in a GC since being runner-up at last year’s Giro d’Italia.

Unfortunately, Carapaz was involved in the same crash that forced Enric Mas out of the Tour, and abandoned before stage 2 with a fractured patella.

Neilson Powless showed his all-round power through Paris-Nice and the spring Classics, and he gives a potential other option for EF.

Louis Meintjes (Intermarché Circus Wanty) showed he’s ticking along nicely, finishing seventh at the Dauphiné. Cofidis captain Guillaume Martin was a few seconds and a place higher. Sergio Higuita could be a backup option for Bora-Hansgrohe. Expect those three to be in the mix come July.

2019 Tour de France champion Egan Bernal also performed well in the Critérium du Dauphiné high mountains to finish twelfth overall. Given his knee problems this year, it’s surely too soon for Tour contention, but with confirmation of his team selection it's clear his recovery from his life-threatening crash appears to be going well.

With his withdrawal from the race with illness, Alexey Lutsenko (Astana Qazaqstan Team) didn't give us a showing of his form at the Tour de Suisse, having finished top 10 in the past two editions, but he did win both the road race and time trial in the Kazakh Nationals. Lutsenko's GC hopes were ruined on stages 1 and 2 where he lost a combined 18 minutes to the leaders and he will likely now chase stage wins.

As for the Giro d’Italia giants?  Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) and Primož Roglič  (Jumbo-Visma)  won’t be at the Tour , which makes sense, but it’s a shame for the fans. The sport’s blue riband event also comes too soon for Tao Geoghegan Hart (Ineos Grenadiers) who crashed out of the Giro d’Italia with a fractured hip.

Stage 14 report: Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard crossed swords again in their vintage duel at the Tour de France as the Danish defending champion gained just one second over the two-times winner at the end of an epic, incident-packed stage.

Slovenian Pogacar beat Vingegaard in the sprint for second place behind stage winner Carlos Rodríguez of Team Ineos but now trails the Dane, who picked up an extra bonus second, by 10 seconds.

The top five on General Classification after stage 14

Rodriguez has just been speaking to reporters about today’s stage win. The Spanish rider who is celebrating his first Tour de France stage victory says:

“It’s incredible. Being here was a dream, getting a victory is incredible in the best race of the world. It’s something I’ve always wanted to achieve and now I’ve got a victory.

[I’m] super happy, super grateful and happy for the team for all their work and believing in me. It wouldn’t have been possible without them.”

Asked if he thought the stage win would be possible when he was dropped going up Col de Joux Plane, he says honestly: “no.” He says he wanted to take advantage of the descent, which he was confident on and again praises his team, and in particular yesterday’s stage winner and fellow Ineos Grenadier rider, Michel Kwiatkowski.

“Tomorrow is going to be a big day also,” he says.

Rodriguez takes the win on stage 14!!

The 22-year-old crosses the line first. Pogacar crosses ahead of Vingegaard to gain one precious second in the GC.

1km to go: Rodriguez has played a blinder on the descent so far. He’s been flying down with maximum speeds of 95kmh.

Ciccone is awarded today's most combative rider

Lidl-Trek’s Giulio Ciccone has been awarded the combativity prize.

5km to go: Pogacar and Vingegaard are glued to each other, so it doesn’t look like there’ll be huge changes at the top of the GC today despite all the excitement. Rodriguez, though, is extending his lead and if he wins, it will be two stage wins in a row for Ineos Grenadiers.

8km to go: Rodriguez looks hungry for the stage win as he attacks on the descent. He could make some big gains on the GC here.

10km to go: Rodriguez and Adam Yates have managed to get back to Pogacar and Vingegaard. The four of them start the final descent together.

12km to go: Vingegaard attacks over the top of the climb but Pogacar immediately counters. They’re back together quickly. It’s an epic battle.

12km to go: Oh no. Pogacar tries to attack but gets blocked by the motorbike and the throngs of fans on the roadside.

13km to go: It’s cagey at the moment. Will one of them attack before the top of the climb? I am loving the roadside excitement and outfits. There’s a man in a flamingo inflatable.

Rodriguez is now 45sec back and Hindley is at almost 2min. These front two are on a different level.

13km to go: Vingegaard has caught Pogacar. Will he counter attack? It looks like he’s winding it up…

14km to go: It’s 2.3km to go to the top of the climb and the gap is stabilising around 4-5sec. This is too close to call and the fans on the roadside are loving it.

15km to go: Vingegaard looks to be clawing his way back. Has Pogacar gone too early?

15km to go : Pogacar attacks. Vingegaard can’t hold on. Big move.

16km to go: It’s around 4km to the top of the Col de Joux Plane, and have to say, it’s looking like one tough day at the office for the riders.

16km to go: Hindley and Rodriguez have now been dropped. Adam Yates is putting in a big turn for Pogacar, while Vingegaard sticks close to his rival’s wheel.

17km to go: Of the other teams’ GC contenders, only Hindley and Rodriguez remain. Gall has just dropped off.

20km to go: We now have the familiar sight of Sepp Kuss pushing hard on the front with Vingegaard on his wheel and Pogacar close behind. Which one is going to attack first?

Declan from Galway emailed earlier to say he was at the foot of the Col de Joux Plane in a bar, which sounded lovely. He says he is “thankfully out of the heat” and had ridden over to Morzine and back this morning.

21km to go: Pello Bilbao has been dropped along with Simon Yates.

21km to go: Wout van Aert looked like he was dropped but found a burst of energy and has accelerated to the front. Putting in a final dig it seems.

22km to go: David Gaudu and Simon Yates are struggling as Rafał Majka comes to the front to set the pace for UAE Team Emirates.

23km to go: Here’s an update on the GC riders still in the front group:

Col de Jeux Plane: The one we’ve all been waiting for…the hors catégorie Col de Jeux Plane is a beast. It stretches for 11.6km and has an average gradient of 8.5% but a maximum gradient of 14%. Ouch. It promises to make the riders suffer, especially following those three first category climbs they’ve already pedalled up. It’s coming up in about 7km.

36km to go: Simon Yates (Team Jayco–AlUla) has also been dropped from the GC group and is 13sec behind. He’ll need to catch them before the base of the Col de Jeux Plane.

39km to go: Pidcock has failed to catch the GC group on the descent and now they’re on flatter terrain the gap is going out. He’s going to lose time today.

45km to go: Now we’re beating treated to footage of Pidcock descending. It’s a beautiful sight.

50km to go: Wout van Aert brings the GC group over the top of the climb, opening up a 30sec gap over Pidcock. What a performance from the Belgian.

51km to go: Pidcock has now dropped off the group with 1km to go. He’ll have to put those descending skills to the test if he’s going to get back to the group.

53km to go: Pidcock has managed to hold on during the steepest part of the climb. Will he be able to stay with the main group and go over the top with them?

59km to go: Tom Pidcock looks to be struggling with the high pace but is clinging on to the back of the GC group. There’s 4.5km to go.

Stage 14 withdrawals

Following a heavy crash in the very early kilometres of today’s stage, plus a few more falls, there have been quite a number of withdrawals from the Tour.

57km to go: Ciccone is finally caught and the GC battle can begin in earnest.

59km to go: A last throw of the dice for Ciccone as he attacks Woods, who is swiftly swallowed up by the peloton.

60km to go: Ciccone and Woods are the last two remaining members of the breakaway as Jumbo-Visma continue to push a high pace.

62km to go: Ciccone isn’t giving up. He knows he can get to within two points of Powless on the mountain classification if he makes it to the top of this climb first. He has Woods for company.

64km to go: The riders have hit the Col de la Ramaz. Jumbo-Visma have already knocked off another 20sec to leave the breakaway looking rather doomed. Ciccone and Woods aren’t giving up yet though.

Ramon Sinkeldam of Alpecin-Deceunick abandons

Have heard Ramon Sinkeldam of Alpecin-Deceunick has also abandoned the Tour today. Not sure why yet but will update once there’s some additional info.

70km to go: It’s tough for the breakaway at the moment as the peloton are holding them at around 30sec. It’s difficult to see them staying away once the riders hit Col de la Ramaz.

Col de la Ramaz: Coming up next is the first category Col de la Ramaz, which is 1,619m high with an average gradient of 7.1% and 13.9 kilometres in length. It’s coming up in about 11km.

Ian from Dublin has emailed to say that this stage was used in last week’s Etape du Tour, which he rode. He’s not ready to see the Col de la Ramaz again so soon, it would seem.

Ciccone wins the intermediate sprint

81km to go: Ciccone clearly has good legs today and has taken the 20 points for the intermediate sprint. It won’t bother Philipsen though, as clearly it isn’t a day for the sprinters.

Earlier I asked how you’re all watching today’s stage of the Tour. Here are some of the replies, with each very much setting the scene. Paulo is in a very hot Andalucia, Roger is over in the USA and cheering for Powless and Matthew has detailed his breakfast. It was a lump of French toast and bacon with (French) Canadian syrup, I’m told. Also, Aiden has tweeted from the Swedish island of Gotland to say hello.

88km to go: Led by Jumbo-Visma, the peloton have increased the pace and have reduced the gap to less than 20sec from the breakaway. Perhaps they are planning something on the next climb…

89km to go: Those ten points have moved Ciccone to within 12 points of Powless on the mountains classification jersey. Powless will have to dig deep to hold onto that polka dot jersey, with plenty of points yet play for today.

We’ll give you a round-up of who’s abandoned today at some point. I know there’s a few of you asking.

Justin from Bristol has emailed to pose a question: “Can I ask the audience, what’s been the most impactful accident in TdF history? Either the one that’s caused the most retirements, or the one that’s taken out the most Top 10 riders.” Thoughts?

97km to go: The gap to the peloton has gone over a minute for the first time today. Predicting some fireworks to come later in the stage with two big categorised climbs left to come: Col de La Rambaz and the Col de Joux Plane.

99km to go: Ciccone played that very cleverly, sitting on Woods’ wheel and attacking with 200m to go to get those 10 sweet points. Woods rolls over to take eight, before Landa and Pinot take six and four points respectively.

100km to go: Ciccone and Woods have gone clear, searching for the maximum mountain points. Who’s going to get the ten?
