• Follow the N1 highway from Cape Town for approximately 130km.
• The road will take you past Paarl, through the Huguenot tunnel, past Worcester, De Doorns and through the Hex River Valley.
• Approximately 30 km after De Doorns and just past the road sign indicating “10km to Touws River,” you will get to the R46 turnoff to Ceres.
• Take the turnoff to the left. Follow the road for approximately 3km.
• You will find the Aquila Private Game Reserve main entrance on your left-hand side.

Aquila Private Game Reserve is nestled in a beautiful valley along the Karoo Mountains, which sets the stage for an incredible Big 5 wildlife experience. Safari-goers will likely spot elephants , lions , buffalos , rhinos , and leopards , as well as various antelope species—all of which roam freely on the Reserve. 

Additionally, Aquila acquired a piece of land across the road from the Reserve, which is home to Aquila Animal Rescue and Conservation Centre (ARC)—recognized by the Campaign Against Canning Industry. The Conservation Center was established for the rehabilitation of rescued, abused, and captivity-bred animals that can never be released into the wild. Since its establishment, the ARC has been able to successfully rehabilitate and release three mountain leopards, owls, numerous lynx, and porcupines onto the Aquila Game Reserve.

The setting is stunning food was delicious staff very friendly

No tv pure bliss. Food was great, however not a la carte. Staff very attentive

Friendly personnel, cabin literally 10 m from the elephants. The safari tours were really nice. We also liked the bar, we drank some really nice cocktails (ask the waiter as he has his own special cocktail menu!).

The views were stunning … food was very good ! Clean comfortable rooms.

This is an excellent place for a first 'safari' as it virtually guarantees seeing all the animals. Our guide was knowledgeable and friendly too. The hotel is very nice, and the pool especially welcome in the heat of the day. Buffet style food is tasty and theres lots of it, plus enough variation for my vegetarian partner as well. Anywhere that does devilled kidneys for breakfast is fine with me too! Our cabin was comfy and cool and the outside shower clean and very nice. Although It was busy, it didn't seem to feel crowded.

Aquila Private Game Reserve is well organized to cater for large groups. The tours were very good with professional and knowledgeable staff. Our driver was exceptional. Meals were standard however breakfast was a little chaotic. Mainly due to lots of guests. However food was good.

We had an amazing time at Aquila! Loved seeing a variety of animals on our mini safari outings. Really well organised. Spacious room, lovely food, beautiful grounds and pool, wonderful play indoor and outdoor areas for the children.

This property was amazing. We had the most amazing stay here in March. The staff were so friendly and helpful. The game drives were exceptional. We managed to see 4 of the big 5. Our guide was brilliant and super knowledgeable. The food was buffet style but very nice and a good range of options for lunch breakfast and dinner . All included except for drink. Lovely pool area. The cottages were excellent and so comfortable. It really was a wow resort. At night there is a open fire with marshmallow roasting and star gazing. They really think of everything

Well-organized hotel used to big groups of tourists. It's one of the very few options near Cape Town to see "wildlife". The spa facilities are really nice, all swimming pools were clean (but cold!). We stayed in one of the cottages. During the evening and night we heard several animals (mainly jackalls and hippos) and one morning we got woken up by the reserve's elephants. Try to have a look at the stars, there's usually a guy from the personnel with some stargazing equipment. It's a nice extra. We swapped one of the big truck safaris for a shorter horse ride, which was a nice, different thing to do. The reserve primarily functions as a sanctuary for saved animals (private owners, ex-circus,...) and they do engage in conservation too. The hotel staff are primarily from the villages closeby.

This was a fantastic game reserve in Cape Town and we got to see the big 5 which is ideal if you are limited on time. The grounds are lovely and the food was great!

When an animal reserve can boast representatives of the “big five” species — elephants, rhinos, leopards, buffalo and lions — it’s a pretty special place. While only a fraction of the size of nature reserves like famed Kruger National Park near Johannesburg , Aquila Private Game Reserve offers all of those headlining mammals in an expansive habitat and, overall, proves to be a great spot for beginner safari-goers looking to get their boots wet. But an enviable wildlife collection isn’t the only reason we’re wild about the malaria-free park found just a few hours from Cape Town . Here are the five most impressive things found at Aquila:

1. The animals . While the little kid inside of you will go ape over the aforementioned animals on your two- or three-hour trek, there is a host of other animals to gawk at along the journey. Wildebeests and zebras are everywhere. Ostriches, giraffe and springbok, a medium-sized antelope that’s beloved in South Africa, parade around the 18,532 acres, too. The family of hippos relaxing in the muddy pool isn’t terribly keen on photo ops, but the two water buffalo that essentially take up post at the entrance to the safari every day surely are. You’ll almost have as much fun watching the guides try to lure them away from the gate as you will have pointing out the wildlife.

2. The staff. With a guidebook and a pair of good binoculars, you could make out most of the animals, but what makes Aquila such a special place for wildlife lovers on their first safari is that the guides have insight and personality — not to mention a story for nearly every situation. Timothy, for example, shares real-life recollections about buffalo attacks and humorous anecdotes about being one of the only staffers who’s allowed to touch the cheetahs. If you get him to talk about the heartbreaking rhino-poaching incident on the reserve from a few years back, however, prepare for an emotional tale from a man with genuine concern for the animals’ well-being. You can show yours by contributing to the park’s Saving Private Rhino initiative.

3. The lodging . While bigger parks in Southern Africa like Botswana’s Duba and Namibia’s Mundulea Reserve provide fully immersive, multi-night excursions under the stars, Aquila is comfortable in its skin of being part game reserve, part great host. With luxury, family and private chalet options, there’s an ideal setting for just about any party. Rooms have an outdoorsy feel (fireplaces, high ceilings, outdoor showers) with upscale touches (rock bathrooms and four-post beds in the private chalets). Note: Individual quarters don’t have televisions, thus subliminally telling guests that though you don’t sleep under a mosquito net, you’re just far enough from the comforts of home.

4. The food . The dining area is in a massive, airy hall made of varied woods. A place that appreciates delicious cuisine as much as the guides enjoy conversations about big cats, Aquila’s hall delivers all-you-can-manage buffets throughout the day — the dining experience you get depends on the package you purchase. While the morning selection of pastries, breakfast meats and made-to-order omelets is fairly routine, the kitchen struts its stuff at lunch with a spread consisting of everything from oxtails and hake (a fish common to the area) to a full roster of flavorful sides and desserts. The dinner is equally as appetizing, what with tender lamb chops and fall-off-the-bone baked chicken served alongside traditional accompaniments, such as steamed vegetables and pap, a potato-like starch that can be topped with a tomato sauce or mushrooms and cheese.

5. The location . Because of its mere two-hour distance from Cape Town, Aquila is ideal for both day trips and overnight stays. Either way, the reserve’s shuttle service picks you up from your Cape Town hotel and passes through the Southern Karoo Highlands, a stunning area with mountain vistas and sensational views of vibrant local wineries. Keep your eyes peeled along the last few miles before the reserve because chances are your vehicle will have a friendly encounter with baboons coming down from the higher elevations in search of food along the roads.
