Magic Carpet Tour

A fantastic experience of beautiful places in Turkey with Fez Travel. We were so lucky to find out that we had the tour as a "private" tour as we were the only guests that booked during the time we wanted to have it, yet Fez Travel didn't cancel the tour. The hotels for our stay during our tour were great, all breakfast were included ( all had a great selection of food ), and most dinners were included ( except a few days when we were in Istanbul). I'd like to mention 2 special people who made our tour so magical & enjoyable: Tamer ( our guide ) and Hakan ( our driver). They both looked after us so well. Tamer is a great tour guide, very knowledgeable, friendly & welcoming, and managed the itinerary & time very well, yet gave us some free time/ flexibility to explore on our own. I definitely recommend this 10 day Magic Carpet tour with Fez Travel to experience the amazing landscape of Turkey and the hospitality of its people. Erni

The Best of Turkey Tour

The Best of Turkey

Our tour leader was amazingly helpful and knowledgeable throughout our tour. The locations were gorgeous and our tour leader gave great insight to each location while also allowing us adequate time to take in the sights on our own. We felt the itinerary was well-balanced and well-paced. Hotel accommodations were clean, courteous, and adequate. Breakfast was average but sufficient and the optional group lunches or dinners were generally decent. It is no exaggeration to say our impression of Turkey was improved by the great experience provided to us during our tour.

Wonders of Turkey (Summer, 11 Days) Tour

Wonders of Turkey (Summer, 11 Days)

Excellent tour of Turkey. It had a jam packed itinerary which was very comprehensive as we saw so many places in a relatively short space of time. As a country, Turkey is fascinating as it is so rich in culture, history and natural beauty. The guide was very informative and driver excellent. Despite being a group of 34 people, we always left on time with no-one ever being late. Frequent rest stops were made along the way. The coach was air conditioned with wi-fi and electrical sockets. The hotels were hit and miss, which may be a reflection of Turkish standards. The Ramada Plaza in Istanbul was the best, closely followed by the Hilton in Konya. The included meals were average tourist standard hotel buffets but the optional dinners were very good, and a couple of our lunch stops were excellent. I am not sure why, but my transfer on arrival was not included and Trafalgar/Cost Saver failed to explain why this was the case when I emailed them prior to my departure. I was the only person on my tour who was not met on arrival at the airport. This resulted in my having to waste money on a taxi. One fellow traveller arrived 20 minutes before me and another couple flew in several hours after me.

Reviews of Coach / Bus Tours in Turkey

Fez Travel packed in lots of sights and things to see and do. I liked the variety in our stops and sights. Well planned except for the last couple of days. Somehow, they need to be tweaked so there are not so many unreasonable night departures. I would have rather paid a bit more and had the meals ordered when we sat down. Buffet meals were luke warm, over cooked, and meats were so dry from heating for long periods. The meals we sat down and was served were much better, tastier, better variety of foods.
Amazing trip, will be back to Turkey
1. The places were good 2. The guide was helpful and knowledgeable 3. Location of the hotels were generally good

Bus Travel in Turkey

Last Updated on August 28, 2023

Bus travel is the easiest, most popular way to travel within Turkey. Buses in Turkey are often the cheapest and usually comfortable alternative to travel.

There are many bus companies to choose from, and each city has a bus station. Popular bus routes in Turkey include; Antalya , Istanbul , Izmir , and Cappadocia , connecting cities all around the country. There are even routes to Greece , Bulgaria, other Balkan countries , and other parts of Europe .

What Are Turkish Buses Like?

The buses, operated by hundreds of companies large and small, are modern and comfortable, with air conditioning, entertainment (movies, audiobooks, TV, computer games), a steward to bring you snacks and drinks, and even free Wifi Internet connections on some buses (and more in the bus terminals).

Turkish buses are generally suited for 30 people. Two seats per row on the right side of the bus and one seat per row on the left. Strangers of opposite-gender can't sit together in Turkey, so you don't have to worry even if you purchase a ticket from the two-seat row.

Remember that Turkish buses are not usually equipped with onboard toilets, so use the terminal facilities before boarding and at the mola (rest stops) about every 2 to 2-1/2 hours along the way. Drinks, snacks, and meals are available at the stops, and smokers can light up (no smoking is allowed on public buses).

Bus Routes & Departures in Turkey

Bus departures are frequent, and fares are low to moderate in Turkey. You can find a bus each hour of the day at 30-minute intervals. For example, buses depart on the 450-km (280-mile) 6- or 7-hour journey between Istanbul and Ankara about every 15 minutes, 24 hours a day, for an affordable price.

Bus trips of more than 8 or 10 hours are tedious. It's better to break a long journey into shorter trips, to take a plane , or to take a train with couchettes or sleeping cars .

Flights to & in Turkey

Routes & Bus Companies

Buses run everywhere, even cross-country ( Istanbul to Artvin : 1352 km, 840 miles, 24 hours). The most popular bus routes run between Antalya , Izmir , Cappadocia , Istanbul , and Bursa .

Here are routes, fares, and travel times from Istanbul to other cities .

Turkey's most popular bus companies are Pamukkale Turizm , Kamil Koç , and Efe Tur. Each has its own website and reserves tickets online.

Here are the major bus companies, some of which have websites with schedules and fares .

Bus Fares & Tickets in Turkey

You can buy tickets to most buses online or at a ticket office . Most of the applications and websites to purchase a ticket have an English option.

When you purchase a ticket online, you will get a text message on your phone with your boarding and seat information. You can also get your ticket printed in a ticket office to ensure a smooth experience.

If you decide to buy your ticket from a ticket office, remember there isn't a central ticket office in Turkey. Instead, there are stands for each bus company. This can be confusing for people when purchasing a ticket in the office. That's why it is recommended to reserve your ticket online.

Here's a comparison of costs, times, and comfort between modes of transportation.

How to Buy Bus Tickets in Turkey

Carrying luggage in turkish bus travel.

Generally, the luggage you entrust to the bus company for shipment in the baggage compartment is safe. However, as in every transportation method and country, incidents can happen, and valuables get lost. So, remember that all valuables should be carried with you personally and carefully protected when you are on public transport.

Explore Turkey by Bus Today!

Traveling by bus in Turkey is generally an affordable and comfortable option. The whole process can be hassle-free when planned beforehand.

Turkish buses offer many free amenities and connect most of the cities within Turkey. Buying your ticket online and paying attention to your luggage when traveling with a bus is recommended.

Regardless of your transportation choice in Turkey, remember to enjoy your trip and make many memories.

—by Tom Brosnahan , updated by Can Turan

Are Turkish buses safe for travel?

Absolutely, millions of people use Turkish buses for traveling all year round. While there are incidents from time to time, they tend to be more common due to adverse weather conditions.

Are bus tickets expensive in Turkey?

Most fares are quite affordable. Often, buses are so frequent you needn't reserve in advance except around holidays .

Are there delays in Turkish bus service?

While it is not common, there can be 15 minutes delay depending on the traffic and the day.

Can you take your pet on a Turkish bus?

Yes. You can bring your pet as long as you keep them inside the carrier and next to you on the bus. Remember, the carrier must be smaller than 23x30x40 cm and your pet must have their vaccination certificates.

How to rent buses in Turkey?

It is common for groups to rent buses for private tours and travel in Turkey. To rent a bus, you need to contact a travel agency.

What to pack for Turkey

People packing for a tour

A thirst for adventure

A Turkish Hammam scrub is a ritual you need to enjoy when visiting this country. Often teamed with communal bathing and occasionally requiring full nudity, pack your confidence to enjoy this tradition that is truly doing as the locals do.

Modest clothing

Turkey is a religious and somewhat traditional country. Pack modest full-length clothing so you can respectfully enjoy momentous religious sights.

A good camera

A smartphone won't suffice when trying to capture a peculiar desert framing a sky of hot air balloons. Pack a good camera so you can snap Turkey to its full beauty.

Old swimwear

Dense in minerals, Turkey's Pamukkale's Cotton Castle Springs may aggravate your swimming clothes should you take a dip. Pack something old and submerge until your heart is content.

Spare suitcase space

Baklava, tea, carpets and jewellery are just some of the goods that will entice you when shopping in Turkey. Leave space for the many treats and trinkets you will want to take home.

Turkey Bus Travel – A Guide To Buses In Turkey

Post author Nicky

Written by our local expert Nicky

Nicky, originally from the UK, is now a local in Turkey. She moved to Marmaris, Türkiye for love 12 years ago and is now your Turkey travel planner.

Are you looking for ways on how to get around Turkey? Then you are in the right place. This guide shows you how easy it is to use buses in Turkey.

I answer all your questions about Turkey bus travel – spoiler alert; we recommend traveling by bus in Türkiye for everyone.

Getting around in Turkey by bus is both cheap and reliable. Bus travel in Turkey is used by locals and tourists, so you’ll never be short on options.

Turkey Travel Blog_Bus Travel In Turkiye

Well, it’s doable if you want to drive , but what if you’re not confident enough on the road or feel like putting your feet up en route to wherever you plan on going?

The good news is that getting around this huge expanse of land that is Turkey is relatively easy. You can take domestic flights between major cities, you can take the train in some areas (although it’s a pretty limited service), or you can do what most locals do and take the bus.

The thing to know about buses in Türkiye is that they go everywhere. Literally, you’ll find a bus going in the direction you want to go no matter what. Sure, you might need to stop somewhere and change, but there will be a bus.

The plus point in all of this is that you get to see a lot while you’re traveling, as most buses stop several times on their journey in other cities along the way.

So, what is it like traveling by bus in Turkey, and what else do you need to know?

Skip Ahead To My Advice Here!

Buses In Turkey – The Truth

Turkey Bus Travel - Bus in Antalya bus station_Kamil Koc

I know you’re looking for some drama here, but in all honesty, there is none. Traveling in Turkey by bus is probably the easiest and most comfortable way to get from A to B. You can take several options, and your journey will undoubtedly be smooth.

This is all down to the fact that long-distance bus companies run a pretty tight ship. During your journey, you’ll stop for bathroom breaks, be served tea, coffee, cola, and water several times, and get a sandwich and biscuits too.

In addition, there is WiFi on board (but whether it works or not is questionable), air-conditioning, and you’ll get a small TV to watch that even has games loaded with movies and Turkish TV series to keep you occupied.

I mean, that’s better than traveling in many countries , right?

Some bus companies even have services with extra legroom, such as the ‘Jumbo’ service run by Pamukkale (but more on that shortly).

Even if you’re traveling a short distance and you use the dolmus (again, more shortly), you’ll find it a quick and easy process. You might not have the most legroom in the world in this case, but it’s cheap, you’ll get where you want to go, and there’s air-conditioning, which is always a blessing.

Brands We Use And Trust

What are dolmus buses.

Dolmus bus in Bodrum

Okay, let’s start with the most basic bus services in local areas.

getting around Turkey is so easy as every village, town, city, whatever, will have a dolmus service.

This small minibus runs several times throughout the day and follows a set route. You wait at a designated stop and hold out your hand when the bus approaches. Then, you pay the driver, sit down, and get off when you’re where you want to go.

Simple, right?

Dolmus services are usually relatively cheap. For instance, between Marmaris and Icmeler in the Mugla area , you pay only 10 lira one way.

However, you’ll also see public buses which are bigger than a dolmus but run on the same service. You can use these, but you usually need a pre-paid travel card. However, if you ask the driver nicely, they may also allow you to pay cash.

Dolmus are small and can often get busy during the summer months, which means a pretty hot and smelly experience if the people around you have forgotten their deodorant. However, for the sake of getting around cheaply and easily, they’re a great option. And most people do wear deodorant these days.

The only downside is that if the dolmus is too full, the driver will tell you to wait for the next one. In most cases, that will only be a few extra minutes of waiting.

However, it’s not the best option if you have luggage; there will be little space and no luggage storage, so it will have to be with you at all times. In that case, if it’s only a short distance, you may be better off getting a taxi.

Long Distance Bus Travel In Turkey

Turkey Bus Travel - Inside the bus in Turkey

And that brings us to the long-distance bus options we talked about earlier. These are very high quality, comfortable, and fitted with seatbelts that everyone must wear, so don’t hesitate to use them if you want to get around. There is also space underneath the bus for plentiful luggage; usually, at least one suitcase per person on the bus.

The only downside is that many people don’t understand the distances between towns and cities in Turkey . Sometimes they can be huge! For instance, you’re looking at about 7-8 hours from Istanbul to Izmir . From Izmir to Diyarbakir, it’s somewhere between 22-24 hours!

The most famous long-distance bus companies in Türkiye are:

All three have websites you can use to check journey times and availability. You can book your ticket online or visit any bus station, find the relevant bus company stand, and book that way. It’s best to book beforehand, if possible, as seats do book up pretty quickly, especially on weekends. You can often find on-the-day tickets but don’t rely on them.

Prices vary according to the journey you’re taking. For instance, if you want to travel between Aydin and Istanbul and use the Jumbo Pamukkale service, which gives you a little extra legroom, you will pay around 500 lira one way.

Most companies are pretty competitive price-wise and usually come out the same; however, it always pays to shop around and see if you can save a little here and there.

Should You Travel By Bus In Turkey

Turkey Bus Travel - intercity bus terminal Bursa , One of the important transportation points

Definitely!

While domestic flights do save time, there is a lot of messing around in getting to airports, checking in, going through security, finding your luggage at the other end, etc. Simply getting on the bus in Turkey is the answer to your problem!

Istanbul Bus in Goreme Airport

Are you planning a trip to Turkey and looking for the most efficient and affordable way to travel between cities? Look no further than intercity bus travel! As the most popular mode of transportation in Turkey, intercity buses offer a comfortable and cost-effective way to explore the country. In this blog post, we will provide you with the ultimate guide to intercity bus travel in Turkey, including a brief overview of the importance of bus travel in Turkey’s transportation system, and a detailed explanation of how to plan your journey, buy tickets, and make the most of your intercity bus travel experience.

Bus Transportation in Turkey

Bus transportation is critical in Turkey’s overall transportation system, connecting cities, towns, and villages throughout the country. As the most popular mode of transportation in Turkey, buses offer several benefits, including affordability, comfort, and flexibility. Due to Turkey’s vast geography and varied landscape, bus transportation has become an essential means of travel for locals and tourists alike. It provides a reliable and cost-effective way to reach destinations that are not easily accessible by other modes of transportation, such as trains or planes. Compared to driving, bus travel allows passengers to sit back, relax, and enjoy the journey without worrying about navigating unfamiliar roads or finding parking. Overall, bus transportation in Turkey is a vital part of the country’s infrastructure, making it possible for people to travel and explore the beauty of Turkey economically.

Types of Buses Available in Turkey

If you’re planning to travel by bus in Turkey, it’s important to know the different types of buses available to ensure what you need. Turkey’s bus transportation system is well-developed and offers various options for travelers, from intercity buses to in-city public transportation buses. Let’s take a closer look at the different types of buses available in Turkey.

Intercity Buses

Metro Turizm Bus

Intercity buses in Turkey are the most popular means of transportation for long-distance travel, connecting cities and towns across the country. Due to the limited railway network in Turkey, intercity bus travel has become the go-to choice for many travelers looking to explore the country. With well-developed highways of intercity bus routes, travelers can easily reach even the most remote destinations in Turkey.

Minibusses between Villages and Districts: Dolmuş

Bodrum Dolmus-Minibus

Minibusses between villages and districts, known as dolmuş in Turkey, are a popular mode of transportation in many country regions. These minibusses operate on set routes, picking up passengers along the way until they reach their destination. Dolmuş is an affordable and convenient way to travel short distances, particularly in rural areas where other forms of transportation are limited. They operate frequently and can often be flagged down from the side of the road, making them a popular choice for locals and tourists alike. However, due to the high demand for these minibusses, they can become overcrowded during peak travel times, and travelers may need to wait for the next one. Nevertheless, dolmuş is an integral part of the transportation system in Turkey, providing an essential service to rural communities and helping connect people across the country.

In City Public Transportation Bus

Istanbul IETT Public Bus Transportation

In-city public transportation buses are a common mode of transportation in Turkey’s major cities, including Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Antalya, and more. These buses operate on set routes, making stops at designated bus stops along the way. In-city public transportation buses are affordable and efficient, making them popular for daily commuters and tourists alike. The buses are generally air-conditioned and have comfortable seating, and many are equipped with free Wi-Fi. Additionally, some cities have introduced environmentally-friendly buses that run on natural gas, helping to reduce pollution and improve air quality. While the bus systems in major cities can be confusing for first-time visitors, it’s worth learning how to navigate them as they are often the most practical and cost-effective way to get around. Overall, in-city public transportation buses are an essential part of Turkey’s transportation system, providing a reliable and affordable way for people to travel within the city.

Intercity Bus Companies in Turkey

Many intercity bus companies are operated by individuals, small cooperatives, and large conglomerates operating throughout the country or in a specific region. These companies offer various services, from standard economy class seats to luxury recliners, personal TVs, and other amenities.

Luxury Bus Companies

For those seeking a more luxurious travel experience, several luxury bus companies operate in Turkey. These companies offer premium amenities, such as half-reclining seats, personal entertainment systems, onboard snacks, and beverages. Turkey’s most popular luxury bus companies include Kamil Koç (Flixbus), Varan Turizm, Pamukkale Turizm, Anadolu, Ulusoy, and Nilüfer Turizm. These companies operate on select routes and are generally more expensive than standard intercity buses but provide a high level of comfort and convenience for travelers.

Low-Cost Bus Companies

Low-cost bus companies, also known as budget or economy bus companies, are popular for those looking to travel within Turkey on a budget. These companies offer basic services at affordable prices, such as standard seating and limited amenities. Some of Turkey’s most well-known low-cost bus companies include Metro Turizm, Truva, Lider, and Huzur. In addition, apart from the companies we have mentioned, approximately 3,500 companies are operating on certain routes with smaller fleets. While these companies may not offer the same level of comfort as luxury bus companies, they provide a convenient and economical way to travel within the country. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly way to travel within Turkey, low-cost bus companies are a great choice.

How to check bus routes in Turkey?

The easiest option is to use a bus ticket booking website, such as Obilet (English) or Biletall, which allows you to search for bus routes and distances, and compare prices from multiple companies. You can also find information about bus routes and schedules at bus stations throughout Turkey.

What should I pay attention to when planning a bus trip in Turkey?

How to search online bus ticket in Turkey

The official names of cities in Turkey may be different than as knowns by tourists. For example, Cappadocia is the general name of the region covered by Göreme, Ürgüp, and Avanos districts in Nevşehir province. Therefore, it is important to search for these districts when searching for a route.

How much does a bus ticket cost in Turkey?

Typically, a bus ticket for a 6-hour journey can cost around 400 Turkish Liras, while a 12-hour journey can cost around 700 Turkish Liras (2024). However, these are approximate costs and may not be accurate for all routes or all times of the year. It is best to check online for the most up-to-date and accurate information on bus ticket prices in Turkey.

How to buy a bus ticket in Turkey?

To buy a bus ticket in Turkey, there are two main options: online and offline. You can purchase a bus ticket online through the official websites of bus companies or bus ticket search engines. Alternatively, you can buy bus tickets at bus terminals in Turkey. During busy travel periods, buying your bus ticket a few weeks ago in advance is advisable to guarantee availability, especially for popular routes.

Online Booking

obilet Online Bus Ticket Booking

Many bus companies in Turkey offer online booking services on their websites, but you can easily search all in one place with Obilet’s English website since it’s a bus ticket search engine. You can search for the desired route, select the date and time, and pay for the ticket online using a credit card. You will then receive a confirmation email with your ticket details, which you can either print out or show on your mobile device when boarding the bus.

Offline Booking

Turkish Bus Terminal

You can also purchase bus tickets at bus terminals or bus stations in Turkey. Most major cities have bus terminals that serve various destinations within Turkey. You can go to the bus terminal, find the ticket booth or counter for your desired bus company, and purchase your ticket in person. Payment can be made in cash or by credit card, depending on the bus company.

How to avoid getting scammed when buying bus tickets in terminals?

Bus ticket offices in the terminal may charge more than the ticket’s value or sell tickets to another destination instead of your destination to sell tickets. That’s why buying tickets online is a good solution.

  • Wi-Fi : Many buses now offer free Wi-Fi on board, allowing passengers to stay connected and work or browse the internet during the journey.

Not all buses in Turkey offer the same amenities, so it’s best to check with the specific bus company or travel agency for more information on the amenities available on your chosen route.

  • Entertainment: Bring a book, magazine, or portable music player to keep you entertained during the journey, especially if the bus doesn’t have onboard entertainment.
  • Warm layer: Even if the bus has air conditioning or heating, it’s a good idea to pack a light sweater or jacket in case the temperature drops or you feel chilly.
  • Neck pillow: A neck pillow can help you sleep more comfortably during the journey, especially for longer trips.
  • Eye mask and earplugs: An eye mask and earplugs can help you block out any light or noise and get some rest during the journey.
  • Personal hygiene items: Pack basic hygiene items such as hand sanitizer, tissues, and wet wipes to keep yourself fresh and clean.

By packing these essential items, you can ensure a more comfortable and enjoyable bus journey in Turkey.

Delays in Turkish Buses

Since buses in Turkey travel between long routes, a 15-minute delay on average for a bus you will get on between these routes is a common situation. However, if the delay time exceeds 1 hour, you should contact the office of your ticket company at the bus terminal.

Are buses safe in Turkey?

Yes, buses in Turkey are generally considered safe for travel. Turkish bus companies prioritize safety and regularly maintain their buses to ensure they meet safety standards. Additionally, most buses have safety features such as seat belts, airbags, and anti-lock brakes. However, as with any mode of transportation, there is always some level of risk involved, so it’s important to take basic safety precautions such as wearing a seatbelt, keeping an eye on your belongings, and following the safety instructions of the bus driver or attendants.

Overnight Bus Travel in Turkey

Overnight bus travel in Turkey is a common and convenient way to travel long distances. Especially for travelers with limited time or looking for budget-friendly solutions, an overnight bus is an ideal option as they will not pay an extra night’s accommodation fee.

How is the bus seating arrangement in Turkey?

bus seating arrangement in Turkey

In intercity buses in Turkey, there are aisles in the middle and seats on the right and left. They can be called 2+1 or 2+2, depending on the number of seats in a row. If you are traveling alone or want to travel comfortably, you can choose a bus with a 2+1 seat arrangement and sit in a single row without someone next to you. Also, if you are a woman or man traveling alone, a person of the same gender will sit next to you in a double seat.

Can I take my pet on the bus?

If you have a pet cat, dog (except for dangerous breeds), or bird (such as goldfinches, budgies, or canaries) with vaccination certificates, they can travel with you on a bus as long as they are smaller than 23x30x40 cm and are in a locked cage. Your pet can travel in its cage on your lap, in front of the horse’s seat, or in a side seat you purchase. If your pet does not meet the relevant conditions, it can still be transported in its own special cage under veterinary control, provided you sign a consent letter, and only in the baggage area. If these conditions are not met, our company reserves the right to refuse transportation for the safety of our other passengers and your pet’s health. You must carry your pet’s health certificate and vaccination papers with you and present them to staff when asked. To ensure a comfortable journey for all passengers and pets, cats and dogs or cats and birds cannot be transported on the same bus. If necessary, your seat may be changed to separate dogs and birds as much as possible.

Bus or flight for intercity traveling in Turkey?

Although the bus is sometimes preferred because it is economical, if there is no plane route to the place you want to go, sometimes it can be a second option besides private transportation. In other words, choosing between alternative transportation vehicles will be the right solution by searching your destination routes.

Is it possible to travel out of Turkey by bus?

Many international bus routes are available, including to neighboring countries such as Greece, Bulgaria, Iran, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, as well as to more distant destinations such as Germany and the Netherlands. However, checking visa requirements and border crossing procedures for the specific country you wish to travel to is important.

How to rent a bus in Turkey?

While renting a bus in Turkey can be done directly with some bus companies, it is often easier and more convenient to do so through a travel agency . The travel agency can help you find a bus that meets your needs and budget and take care of all the necessary arrangements, including driver and insurance. You can search for travel agencies that offer bus rental services online.

In conclusion, intercity bus travel is a popular and affordable way to explore Turkey. With a wide network of bus routes connecting cities and towns across the country, travelers can easily reach their destinations comfortably and conveniently. From luxury buses with personal entertainment systems to standard buses with basic amenities, there are options to suit every budget and travel style. By following the tips and guidelines outlined in this guide, travelers can make the most of their intercity bus journey in Turkey and enjoy a hassle-free and memorable travel experience.

Guide to Getting Around Turkey Using Public Transport

Turkey is an excellent country to explore using just public transport. Its buses and trains are particularly efficient and well-connected across the whole country. In fact, Turkey has one of the most comprehensive inter-city and regional transportation systems I’ve come across.

I personally love the independence of using public transport, and as a solo female traveller in Turkey, I found the trains, buses and dolmuş (like a minibus) to be safe too. The public transport was efficient, convenient and affordable.

Turkey is a beautiful country with so much to explore. Many travellers to the country are likely to be visiting Turkey for one or two weeks , and fortunately, public transport in Turkey is efficient to rely on for visits of this length. The buses and trains in Turkey really open up this incredible country and give a wonderful insight into daily life. Whether you want to go from Bodrum to Pamukkale , or Denizli to Fethiye , there’s most likely an efficient route on public transport to get there.

So here’s my guide to getting around Turkey by public transport. I’ve included all of the essential information you need to know before using public transport in Turkey. The includes Turkish language terms to learn and how to plan your trip getting around Turkey on buses, trains and planes.

Using Public Transport in Turkey – Essential things to know

Key public transport language in turkish.

  • Otogar – Bus Station
  • Otobüs – Bus
  • Dolmuş – Local minibuses that run on set routes
  • Tren istasyonu – Train Station
  • Tren – Train
  • Kaç para? – How much?
  • Taksi – Taxi
  • Bilet gişesi – Ticket Office

Getting around by bus in Turkey

Using buses in Turkey is very straight forward. I took several buses around the country, including a bus from Bodrum to Selçuk (for Ephesus – check my guide to Ephesus here ) and also from Denizli (for Pamukkale ) to Fethiye on the coast .

I was really impressed with the service on board the buses I took around Turkey. With every company, the seats had working phone chargers, there was air conditioning, the seats reclined and they offered pillows. Best of all, there was waiter service. Yes, on many buses in Turkey, there is food and drink service on board.

Dressed in a shirt and a bow tie, the waiter offered me a selection of sandwiches, snacks and drinks. Even on journeys which were only 2 or 3 hours.

Which bus company to use in Turkey?

There are many bus companies in Turkey to pick from and deciding which to use can feel a bit overwhelming. I did some research prior to arriving in Turkey and decided to opt for the Pamukkale bus company (from Bodrum to Selçuk) and the Anadolu bus company (from Denizli to Fethiye). I was very impressed with the service on both bus companies. They both offered very comfortable buses, safe driving and unlimited drinks and snacks.

Anadolu even offered TVs with complimentary headphones, showing mostly Turkish TV shows, films, games, music and the news. Out of interest, I do believe the two companies are part of the same umbrella company.

All of the various bus companies sell their tickets at the bus stations. You can generally buy tickets on the day, but for some really popular routes, it wouldn’t do any harm to buy the ticket the day beforehand if you can.

I generally think the standards of public bus/coach companies in Turkey is really high and the competition keeps prices reasonable.

Should I book my bus trips in advance in Turkey?

For both those journeys, I booked by turning up at the bus station.

For the Pamukkale journey out of Bodrum, I went to the bus station a few hours ahead of the time I wanted to leave as fortunately, the station is really close to the town centre. The staff didn’t speak much English but we got by fine. I went back to my day exploring Bodrum with a printed ticket for that evening and a reserved seat.

For the Anadolu bus out of Denizli, I knew I was travelling on a public holiday in Turkey. So to be on the safe side in case it was really busy, I went to the bus station the day before to purchase my ticket. Apparently, it would have been fine to have bought it on the day but I didn’t want to take the risk.

You can purchase bus tickets on online in Turkey, but the websites are mostly in Turkish and a little tricky to navigate.

Getting around by trains in Turkey

Luckily, using trains in Turkey is really simple and another great way to get around. I love trains as you may know, so I was rather excited to experience my first Turkish train.

The first train I took was from Selçuk (near Izmir and home to Ephesus ) to Denizli to go to Pamukkale . I was really impressed – the train was clean, uncrowded and had a charging point.

Should I book my train tickets in advance in Turkey?

Luckily, you don’t need to plan too far ahead and buy tickets in advance for Turkey.

In Selçuk, I went to the train station hours ahead to buy my train tickets, but I was informed that the ticket hall doesn’t open until just before the train leaves. So I headed back to my hotel’s pool and then returned just before the scheduled departure time.

Buying the train ticket was easy and straight forward, but the train was pretty late.

When the train did arrive into the station, I expected a scrap for a seat but it wasn’t hard to get a window seat at all. The other Turkish passengers were very courteous.

The train stopped frequently at different stations and there was a ticket inspector regularly checking, so I wouldn’t ever recommend getting on a train in Turkey without a ticket.

I believe there were toilets on board, but I didn’t use them.

Using a Dolmuş in Turkey

The dolmuş (pronounced dolmush) is the local minibus/taxi service, available in every city/town in Turkey. Dolmuş offer an incredibly easy service, where users jump on and off, and the service is very orderly.

Fares are super cheap and making getting from A to B in towns really easy. They also depart from the the same stations as the larger longer distance buses – so nice and easy to transfer between dolmuş and bigger bus.

Taking domestic flights around Turkey

Turkey is blessed with one of the best national carriers I have experienced – Turkish Airlines . Turkey also has a very extensive budget airline called Pegasus . Honestly, both airlines are great and I found flying around the country very easy and straight forward. Best of all, it was a real time saver in my two-week Turkey trip .

The airfares for both airlines were surprisingly well-priced and sometimes, when looking online, I found there wasn’t a big difference in the fares between Pegasus and Turkish Airlines.

One factor to note however, is that Pegasus uses the second Istanbul airport (Sabiha Gokcen International Airport). Personally, I didn’t really like this airport. It was further from the city centre (an hour’s drive)and I found the security lines to be so so low. Generally, flying into Ataturk (Istanbul’s main airport), is much easier and the airport offers a more pleasant experience in my opinion.

Turkish Airlines’ seats are comfortable and the planes are new and modern. Best of all (and despite most internal flights being just 1 hour long), many of Turkish airlines’ planes have TVs for each seat as well as delicious food and drinks. I really love flying on Turkish. They also have a brand new Business Class Lounge at Istanbul airport too.

Using public transport in Turkey as a solo female

Well, I am happy to report that I felt very safe using public transport alone in Turkey.

I never once felt unsafe, uncomfortable or had any unpleasant moments. From engaging with the ticket counter staff at bus and train stations, to the service on board, I found the Turkish people to be very kind, patient, unthreatening and actually, extremely helpful. So many times, a man would help me with my suitcase on stairs or lifting it into overhead compartments.

Families tried to share their snacks with me and not a single man made me uncomfortable or looked at me, other than to smile or say hello.

Using a local tour company to arrange tickets or transfers

If you’re pushed for time or the tickets for your desired routes have sold out, another option is to arrange a transfer or tour through a local company. GetYourGuide makes this really easy and bookable in advance online, so I’ve included some of these ideas below:

  • Private Transfer between Dalaman and Kas
  • Dalaman Airport – Fethiye Private Transfer
  • Private Transfer between Dalaman Airport & Kalkan
  • Kusadasi to Izmir Airport Transfers

Have you been to Turkey before? How did you find getting around on public transport? Let me know in the comments below.

I found using public transport to get around Turkey extremely simple and generally all-round pleasant. So I hope my guide to public transport in Turkey has proved useful and that it makes travelling around this lovely country by bus, train or plane much less daunting. Using public transport in Turkey completely opened up the country to me and I loved being completely independent. It also gave me a real feel for daily life in Turkey.

If you’re considering a longer trip, you might find my two-week Turkey itinerary here useful.

I also visited several other places around Turkey and wrote detailed guides on each. Please find my guides to Bodrum ,   Pamukkale , Ephesus here, as well as my experience sailing the famous Turquoise Coast and how to spend one day in Istanbul .
