Speaking of old churches, this list wouldn’t be complete without including San Pablo Church (also called San Pablo de Cabigan Church Ruins ), a prominent landmark in Isabela Province.
Built in 1624, it is the oldest church in Isabela. It was built using adobe instead of red bricks, which makes it unique among similar Spanish-era churches, and features a six-storey bell tower, the tallest in Cagayan Valley Region.
The church was damaged during WWII and then later an earthquake, thus creating the ruins that we know now. In the 1950s, a smaller church was built within the ruins, which is currently where the locals visit to reflect and pray.
If you love old architecture, the San Pablo Church should be included in your list of Isabela Province tourist spots to visit.

Isabela Travel Guide
Travel to isabela.
Isabela, a municipality on the northwest coast of Puerto Rico offers various travel options for tourists. If you live on the east coast of the United States you’ll be happy to know that in just 4 hours you’ll be basking under the Puerto Rican sun. You have two airport options to fit your travel needs and desired vacation itinerary.
+ Airport Options - Travel to Isabela / West Coast of Puerto Rico
Option #1: san juan airport.
Numerous daily flights from various major airlines fly into Luis Munoz Marin Airport (SJU) from many cities in the United States. Isabela is 72 miles west from San Juan. It is about a 1.5 to 2 hour drive from SJU to Isabela, depending on traffic and road conditions.
You may take a taxi from the airport, but that would be very costly due to the distance away. The drive is easy and on major roads, so we advise tourists to rent a car at the airport. That way, you may also enjoy exploring all the attractions and things to do in Isabela and nearby places in the Porta del Sol region (west coast).
Vacation Tip: To make your day of arrival easier and have the bonus of exploring another destination in Puerto Rico, we recommend you stay in San Juan 1 or 2 nights in order to explore Old San Juan . After seeing the historic city, leave San Juan after a relaxed breakfast and then head to Isabela.
Option #2: Aguadilla Airport
Airline carriers flying from the USA to the Aguadilla Airport, Rafael Hernández Airport (BQN) include United Airlines, Spirit and JetBlue . Isabela is only about a 10-minute drive east from the Aguadilla Airport to the most popular hotels in town. Because it is best to explore Isabela and/or the west coast with a car, we highly recommend you rent a car ahead of time through an online booking service rather than at the airport. If you’re staying at a resort in Isabela and don’t need transportation around Isabela, taxis are available and waiting outside of the airport after flight arrivals.
San Juan Airport vs. Aguadilla Airport
San Juan Aiport (SJU) – Many more airlines and convenient flights to choose from, but it is a longer drive to Isabela from San Juan. A great travel option is staying in San Juan for two nights to enjoy Old San Juan and the city attractions.
Aguadillla (BQN) – Only 10 minutes away from Isabela, but flights are very limited to three airlines, from only a few select departure locations, and with inconvenient arrival times typically between 1 am and 5 am.
+ Driving from the San Juan Airport to Isabela
- Upon leaving the airport, take PR Highway 26 OESTE (West) towards San Juan.
- After traveling 3 miles, stay right and take the exit for Highway 22 OESTE (West). This route has tolls, so as mentioned above, make sure your rental car has an AutoExpreso prepaid toll sticker for traveling to Isabela. Most car rental companies will add tolls to your bill for your convenience.
- After driving an hour + on PR 22, this route will merge with / become PR Route 2 OESTE after passing Arecibo and before Hatillo.
- Stay on PR 2 OESTE for another 25-30+ minutes, approx. 13.4 miles.
- Just after crossing the concrete bridge into Isabela, you’ll immediately see a large “ISABELA” sign on the right. Do not exit here as it leads to the Guajataca Tunnel and Beach area only.
- Take the next right, after just a 1/4 mile or so, and exit off of PR 2 and onto PR 113 (there is a large green road sign for Route 113 just before the road/turn. This route has much less traffic than PR 2 and conveniently runs west past the Royal Isabela Golf Resort .) If staying at Royal Isabela, the entrance is on the right at roadside km marker 4.0.
- Continue on 113 for approximately 4.5 miles to the Isabela town plaza/square.
- Once there, you must take a right due to intersecting with a one-way street.
- Take the second street left, then first right turn onto PR 466 (sign there says HACIA 466 ).
- Route 466 goes downhill toward the ocean, curves left, then runs along the coastline where there are numerous beach access points, restaurants, and places to stay . PR 466 becomes 4466 at Jobos Beach which heads west past more lodging and beaches. (See Interactive Map provided below)
+ Driving from the Aguadilla Airport
- When exiting the rental car lot at the airport, turn right onto Hangar Road and follow it to the end until you must make a left turn.
- Take the first right to get onto PR 110 South.
- Drive just over 2 miles, approx. 5 minutes, and make a left turn onto PR 4466 at the flashing yellow signal light just after km marker 30.3 (Brisas del Atlantico restaurant is on the right). This road provides access to lodging and beaches and becomes PR 466 near Jobos Beach. Again, PR 466 is the main beach access, lodging, and restaurants access route in Isabela. (See Interactive Map provided below)
+ Getting Around Isabela
As we discuss and provide tips on the Getting Around page, a car rental is the best option for exploring and seeing all of the wonderful attractions in Isabela and the west coast should you choose to venture out further. Isabela has a very long coast, with many beaches, and attractions in many different areas around this Puerto Rico municipality. Both airports mentioned above have many car rental companies and options to choose from.

Apart from being an agricultural hub in Northern Luzon, Isabela has a lot to offer for tourists seeking adventure and relaxation. With its stunning beaches, caves, waterfalls, historical sites, festivals , and delicious local cuisine – there’s something for everyone.
Isabela may not be as famous as Boracay or Palawan when it comes to beaches, but it has its own share of stunning white sands and clear waters. Here are some of the beaches you should visit:
Dicotcotan Beach
If you’re looking for a serene beach with crystal-clear waters, Dicotcotan Beach is the perfect spot for you. This white sand beach is located in the town of Maconacon and is surrounded by lush greenery. You can rent a cottage or bring your own tent if you want to stay overnight.
The Coastal Town of Palanan
It’s worth noting that most beaches in Isabela are not yet commercialized which means that they remain pristine and untouched by massive tourism activities. If you’re planning to visit Isabela’s beaches, make sure to bring enough sunblock, drinking water, snacks, and other necessities since there may be limited services available near some beaches.
Isabela’s beaches may not yet be as famous as other destinations but they offer their own unique charm and beauty. They’re perfect for travelers who want to go off the beaten path and discover something new.
Historical Sites
Museums such as the isabela provincial museum and santiago city museum.
If you’re a history buff, you’ll love visiting the museums in Isabela. The Isabela Provincial Museum is located in an old Spanish building that used to be the provincial capitol.
It showcases the rich cultural heritage of the province, including antique farming tools, traditional clothing, and local handicrafts. The Santiago City Museum is another must-see attraction for history lovers.
This museum is housed in an old church building and features artifacts from different periods of Santiago’s history, including pre-colonial times all the way up to modern-day. Some of the highlights include a collection of old photographs and vintage items from local businesses.
Churches like the San Pablo Church and Our Lady of Atocha Church
Isabela also has several beautiful churches that reflect its strong Catholic roots. One of these is the San Pablo Church in Tumauini, which is considered one of the best examples of Baroque architecture in Asia. Its intricate façade features a mix of European and Asian design elements, making it truly unique.
Another notable church is Our Lady of Atocha Church in Alicia. This 18th-century church has retained much of its original design and structure over time despite being hit by major earthquakes.
It boasts beautiful stained glass windows representing different saints and a series of paintings depicting scenes from the Bible. Visiting these historical sites gives you a glimpse into Isabela’s storied past – from its Spanish colonial roots to its more recent agricultural history – all while immersing yourself in stunning architecture.
A word on etiquette
When visiting churches or religious sites in Isabela, it’s important to dress modestly out of respect for local customs. This means covering your shoulders and knees and avoiding shorts or revealing clothing. It’s also customary to remove your shoes before entering a church or temple.
Pro tip: timing is everything
If you’re planning to visit any of these historical sites, it’s worth checking ahead to see if they have any special events or masses scheduled. Attending mass in one of Isabela’s beautiful churches is a truly unique experience that allows you to witness the local culture up close and personal.
Food Destinations
Local delicacies: pancit cabagan, tupig, and chichacorn.
Isabela is not only known for its natural attractions and historical sites but also for its delicious food. One of the must-try local dishes is Pancit Cabagan.
It is a stir-fried noodle dish with vegetables and meat, served with sauce on top. The unique thing about this dish is that it uses two types of noodles: miki (thick egg noodles) and bihon (thin rice noodles).
You can find it in almost every restaurant or canteen in Isabela. Another popular snack or dessert that originated from Ilagan City is Tupig.
It is a sticky rice cake wrapped in banana leaves and cooked over charcoal. The ingredients include glutinous rice, coconut milk, sugar, and grated coconut meat. Tupig has a sweet taste with a hint of smoky flavor from the banana leaves.
If you’re looking for something salty to munch on while exploring Isabela, try Chichacorn. It’s crispy fried corn kernels that are flavored with garlic or cheese. Chichacorn originated from the town of Cauayan but now can be found all over the province.
The Bambanti Festival: A Celebration of Isabela’s Agricultural Heritage
Isabela, known as the “Corn Capital of the Philippines ,” celebrates its agricultural heritage with the Bambanti Festival. Held every February in the city of Ilagan, this week-long festival highlights the province’s bountiful harvests and pays tribute to farmers who work hard to provide food for Filipinos. The festival’s name comes from the Ilocano word “bamban,” which means scarecrow.
These figures, dressed in traditional farm clothes, are created by local artists and displayed around the town during the festival. The event features street dances, parades, and a beauty pageant where contestants wear costumes inspired by different produce grown in Isabela such as corn, rice, and vegetables.
Aside from these colorful festivities, there are also competitions for farmers to showcase their best varieties of crops such as corn and rice. There are also exhibits selling various products from Isabela like handicrafts made out of bamboo and rattan.
The Gakit Festival: Showcasing Indigenous Culture
The Gakit Festival is a four-day celebration held every January in Ilagan City that showcases the province’s indigenous culture. This event is an opportunity for tribes to show off their unique traditions through dance performances and rituals.
“Gakit” refers to a traditional Ibanag dance performed during harvest season where dancers hold hands forming a ring while singing songs about their gratitude for a successful harvest. The festival features other dances from different tribes such as Binuangan dance performed by Ybanag people while wearing colorful costumes made from abaca fibers.
During this time visitors can learn about various tribal cultures through exhibits featuring indigenous crafts like pottery or weaving fabrics using banana fibers. There is also a parade showcasing traditional costumes worn by different tribal groups highlighting their rich history that dates back centuries before the arrival of Spanish colonizers.
One of the highlights of the festival is a culinary competition where traditional dishes are judged. Visitors can try local delicacies like Tinumbong, a sweet sticky rice cake wrapped in banana leaves or Danggit, a smoked fish dish that is popular in Isabela.

7 BEST SNORKELING SPOTS IN ISABELA, GALAPAGOS
Home > Galapagos > Isabela > 7 BEST SNORKELING SPOTS IN ISABELA, GALAPAGOS
- Last Updated: February 27, 2024
Isabela is the biggest and most unexplored island of the archipelago and it has incredible snorkeling spots, with that in mind I’ve listed here the 7 best spots to go snorkeling in Isabela. Although some are beaches of Isabela, others are islets in the near, places you can only go by doing a daily tour. The marine life in the Galapagos is so unbelievable that even snorkeling you might spot hammerhead sharks and manta rays.
Apart from snorkeling in Isabela, you can go on volcano hikes, explore the highlands and even scuba-dive. This is the island with the best unspoiled nature in my opinion and I’ve personally snorkeled in at least half of these places and when I didn’t I could see the fish and sometimes turtles and sharks from above water. In any case, for the ones I did snorkel, I wrote an entire guide on how to get there and all the info that you need and I linked them together.
SNORKELING IN ISABELA
General info.
Isabela, like all the other islands, is part of the Galapagos National Park, and therefore it has a number of things you should know:
- Most of the activities have to be done on a tour with a Naturalist guide.
- All the agencies have the same prices (although you can barter if you book more than one tour).
- Most beaches have opening and closing times (turtle nesting reasons).
- You should book your tour at least one day in advance (or you might risk not having a place on the best ones).
- Bring Seasickness Medication for the tours on the water.
- Always use strong sunscreen (Sun in the Equator line burns more).
- Have mosquito repellant with you, especially at sunset. There are horseflies in the Galapagos.
- You can’t fly a drone here unless you have a special permit from the National Park.
- You can’t rent a motorcycle or a car, everything has to be done by taxi, bus, boat, bicycle, or on foot.
- You can’t and shouldn’t touch the animals on the island.

These are tours i didn't do myself but have good reviews on viator and might save you some time while on the island., snorkeling in, isabela, galápagos, 1. concha de perla lagoon.
The Concha de Perla Lagoon in Isabela is a beautiful lagoon full of mangroves that you can visit just a short walk from Puerto Villamil town. You don’t have to pay for the entrance and is great for a family escape or snorkeling adventure.
You will definitely see marine iguanas on the wooden deck before entering the water and exotic beautiful fish. With luck, you might spot some turtles and perhaps some reef sharks and rays.

2. PUERTO VILLAMIL BEACH
The Puerto Villamil beach or Playa Isabela in Isabela island is a gorgeous 4 km beach that runs alongside the entire seaside of this cute little town.
This white-sanded beauty with turquoise water is the perfect place to relax on Isabela island. Here you will see many pelicans fishing and marine iguanas and on the east side, there’s a great place to surf.

3. LA PLAYITA BEACH
La Playita beach is the main alternative to Puerto Villamil’s beach and it stands right at the beginning of Los Humedales Park and some meters after the main beach. Here you can come at the end of your Wall of Tears bicycle ride or to say that you went to a different beach in Isabela.
Honestly, it is nice and it has more like a bay feeling but with a giant beach like Puerto Villamil’s beach next to the town where there aren’t almost people you don’t necessarily need to find a remote beach on this island. In any case, if you look for alternative beaches this is it.

4. LOS TUNELES - CABO ROSA
The Los Tuneles or Cabo Rosa tour in Isabela island is the coolest water tour you can do in the archipelago and the best snorkeling in Isabela, Galapagos. You will see so much wildlife you won’t believe it.
We saw on the surface blue-footed boobies, penguins, sea lions, marine iguanas and orange crabs and underwater reef sharks, turtles, a sea horse, a sea lion, an eagle ray, a stingray, an octopus, a lobster, and beautiful schools of fish.
Apart from the wildlife, the lava structures underwater are mind-blowing, you can dive through infinite tunnels and caves, and to top it we saw like in Angelita’s cenote in Mexico, an hydrogen sulfide cloud. What an experience!

To book this tour: Check the local company Coral Blanco Tour Operator (click on the icons), or book it online on Viator with any of the tours underneath:
5. LAS TINTORERAS
Las Tintoreras islet is the most common tour to go on Isabela island and it’s the only one you get if you come from Santa Cruz on a daily trip to Isabela. It is an area on the water, 10 minutes by boat from Puerto Villamil’s town that was formed when the lava of Sierra Negra’s volcano got in contact with the oxygen forming a solid outer shell, like a lava tunnel’s carcass, and because it is on the water it formed some canals where daily hundreds of baby reef sharks (tintoreras) tend to go to.
Here you will also see blue-footed boobies, marine iguanas, and with luck some penguins. After the land tour, there is some time for snorkeling where you might find turtles, rays, and sea lions. Personally if you’d like to do some snorkeling in Isabela i would definitely suggest you first the Los Tuneles but if you don’t have time this is a great fast and cheaper option.
6. TORTUGA ISLAND
Tortuga Island or Brattle Island is probably one of the places I’d visit if I’d want to see Hammerhead sharks and manta rays while snorkeling in Isabela. It is a small islet located on the southeast of Puerto Villamil town and it has a shape of a half-moon clearly being the crater’s rim of an extinct volcano.
After a 45 minutes speed boat ride you reach the island and there is some birdwatching time to try and spot blue-footed and Nasca boobies, frigate birds, and other species, and then it’s snorkeling time where you will hopefully find hammerheads and manta rays, then there is some deep-sea fishing and you eat lunch at Loberia beach, after lunch and after some more snorkeling, you go back to Puerto Villamil.
To book this tour: Check the local company Pahoehoe Galapagos’s website.
7. 4 HERMANOS AND CARTAGO BAY
Los 4 Hermanos islands is another great place to see some hammerheads, Galápagos sharks, and even manta rays. It is located 1 hour away by speed boat to the northeast of Puerto Villamil’s town. Here like in the Tortuga Island snorkel tour you’ll have a chance to do some deep-sea fishing and fish your own tuna with the crew that will later prepare it as ceviche for lunch.
After Los Hermanos the tour takes you to Cartago Bay where you can snorkel a bit more and see some green turtles, tropical fish, rays, and sharks.
WHERE TO STAY
For those looking for a sophisticated and comfortable stay, The Iguana Crossing Boutique Hotel is a great option, boasting 14 elegant rooms, a sparkling pool, and a rooftop lounge. Cormorant Beach House offers an environmentally conscious retreat, where guests can enjoy the natural beauty of the island and a complimentary breakfast at a local-owned restaurant. For those who prefer more apartment-style accommodation, Aparthotel Casa Soleil offers fully-equipped apartments just 450 meters from the beach.

Puerto rico is a top golf travel destination—for you and pga tour.

Dorado Beach is home to the 36-Hole TPC Dorado Beach golf courses and the only Ritz-Carlton Reserve ... [+] luxury hotel in the U.S.
The Puerto Rico Open finished with a dramatic playoff Sunday, but it was hardly the end for the event. In fact, while I was attending the tournament—one of the most spectator friendly in all of golf—the PGA Tour and Puerto Rico Tourism Company announced a two-year extension of the longest running PGA Tour event in the Caribbean, since 2008.
“The Puerto Rico Open beautifully showcases what visitors can expect when playing golf here,” said Brad Dean, chief executive officer of Discover Puerto Rico . “Watching top-echelon players compete on one of our 18 courses during the tournament broadcasts with views framed by swaying coconut trees, crashing turquoise surf and towering rainforest ridgelines inspires golfers to visit Puerto Rico.”
Old San Juan and its Morro Castle is a must-see for every visitor to Puerto Rico
Unlike most tournaments where it is hard to move through the crowds and sometimes impossible to get up to the ropes, the Puerto Rico Open is a spectator’s dream, uncrowded and welcoming, in a beautiful tropical setting. It’s also easy to combine a day at the tournament with great golf of your own, very close by. The PGA Tour came on the heels of Puerto Rico hosting an American Junior Golf Association Championship, the Latin America Amateur Championship, and in 2022, the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball—the first United States Golf Association (USGA) championship played outside the U.S. mainland.
But golf in Puerto Rico is about much more than tournaments. It’s about great courses and lots of them, swaying palms trees, beautiful beaches, and a bevy of resorts that have been completely renovated and upgraded since the devastation of Hurricane Maria in 2017. It’s also about delicious food—there are more than 4,000 restaurants here—and much of it is very affordable by Caribbean island standards. It’s also about the charm of Old San Juan, casinos, watersports and rum, including the world’s largest rum distillery (Bacardi). It’s increasingly about sustainability and stunning biodiversity—Puerto Rico is home to amazing natural wonders, including rain forest, cloud forest, waterfalls, the world’s three most famous bioluminescent bays, and El Yunque Park, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest system.

It's also the easiest place in the Caribbean to get to, with non-stop flights from many cities. A lot of travelers from the States like the fact that it is part of the U.S., with no need for passports, our laws, money and if you choose to rent a car, familiar driving.
Many Caribbean islands have no golf, and among those that do, most are lucky to offer one or two courses, with only a handful featuring enough for an actual golf vacation. Puerto Rico has a whopping eighteen layouts, including five that have been rated by Golfweek among the Top 50 Courses in the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, and the Atlantic Islands. World famous designers represented in Puerto Rico include Tom Kite, Greg Norman, Tom and George Fazio, Gary Player, Rees Jones, Robert Trent Jones, Sr., and Robert Trent Jones, Jr.
Don't forget the food! Puerto Rico has more than 4000 restaurats and this is Mofongo (plantains, ... [+] garlic, pork and chicharron).
But the big news is that there is more on the way, with two hotly anticipated new courses coming soon. A new 18-hole oceanfront golf course and resort tentatively called Moncayo is expected to open this year in Fajardo, in the island’s northeast, while a third course at TPC Dorado Beach should be close behind, making that the largest golf resort on the island. Currently the two courses at Dorado Beach are for members and resort guests only, but the new one is expected to allow outside play. Dorado Beach is home to one of only seven Ritz-Carlton Reserve properties on earth, the fabled brand’s higher ultra-luxury tier. From budget to 5-Star luxury, there’s golf and lodging for every taste here.
The main cluster of courses are fairly close together in the Northeast (on the North coast, east and west of San Juan), with a handful of options on the South Coast, the Eats Coast and a few on the West Coast. These are the highlights:
Dorado Beach
Once part of Laurance Rockefeller’s original Rockresorts brand, this was the golf center of the Caribbean with 72-holes, two hotels and a grand casino. It’s shrunken over time, but also has become much more luxurious, and was transformed into the only Ritz-Carlton Reserve property in the U.S . If you have a lot of points in Marriott’s Bonvoy, the world’s largest hotel loyalty program, this is a good way to blow them. The Forbes 5-Star resort also has a Forbes 5-Star spa, and is home to two courses comprising the 36-hole TPC Dorado Beach . The East Course, always the most famous of the original four, is the highest ranked layout in Puerto Rico on the Golfweek list at 31, and has one of the most memorable starts in all of golf with a long oceanfront drive in the cart to the first tee, and wonderful ocean vistas from the get-go, returning to the same great views at the finish. You have to stay here to play these. It is a deluxe operation with excellent maintenance and forecaddies, and construction is under way on a third eighteen. Dorado Beach is on the North shore, west of San Juan.
St. Regis Bahia Beach
Puerto Rico’s other Forbes 5-Star resort, also with Forbes 5-Star spa, also Bonvoy, the St. Regis is located wtihin the Bahia Beach community , which was one of the first resort developments in the world to get Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Certification for the entire property, including its golf course (the environmentally friendly program has traditionally been mainly for golf courses). It is a beautiful, garden-like community that puts sustainability front and center, a really special place with great food, two-miles of pristine beach, outdoor sculptures throughout and its own on-site environmental non-profit foundation. About 65% of the nearly 500-acres are preserved as green areas, sanctuaries or nature trails, and there is a very extensive trail network throughout.
The St. Regis Bahia Beach has 2-miles of beach and its golf course plays along the ocean.
It also has the island’s most demanding golf course, especially from the tips—with a scary 75.9 course rating. The park-like routing is tied for Number 37 on the Golfweek list, is pristinely maintained, has every hole isolated by lush jungle so you rarely see more than one hole at any time, and offers tons of risk/reward decisions, tricky angles and lots of water in play. The Robert Trent Jones, Jr. design can swallow balls, and is the kind of course where every shot requires careful thought. Good players love it! The St. Regis Bahia Beach, as well as the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve and Wyndham Grand Rio Mar, with 91-holes between them, all sit close together on the North Coast east of San Juan. This is the biggest concentration of golf on the island, and very easy to get to, half an hour from the airport.
Royal Isabela
Royal Isabela is a stunning course on cliffs towering over the crashing surf.
This boutique resort has changed hands since I last visited years ago, and was just sold in late 2023. Rumors are that new owners will invest in upgrades, but Royal Isabela already had luxury lodging, entirely in private casitas, and the best course on the island (also on the Golfweek list, though ranked far too low at 41). The only drawback is that it is removed and somewhat remote from the rest of the popular courses, on the less visited Northwestern shore, but it is near the beloved beach town of Rincon. The golf course is as close as you can get to a links layout in the region, with multiple dramatic clifftop holes hugging the ocean, and it’s rare in the sense that you can walk it with caddies. My first thoughts on seeing it was Pebble Beach Golf Links transported to an even more scenic setting. No matter how much golf you have played worldwide, it’s hard to believe you would not be impressed.
Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve
This is where the pros tee it up, and the Championship Course hosts the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open (early March). When I visited two years ago the Grand Reserve had 36-hole, both designed by Tom Kite, but the second course has been cut to nine to build luxury homes, so it is now a 27-hole property including the eighteen defined as the Championship Course. It’s a Florida-style layout minus the garish fountains and endless homes, flat, open and windswept with a fair amount of water, no tricks, what you see is what you get, and the main defenses are fast undulating greens and wind. It’s a fun, high quality round, and the resort is a better than average property for the basic Hyatt Regency brand, with large rooms, a beautiful pool complex, and good range of restaurants. It abuts the St. Regis Bahia Beach resort property, but at a substantially lower price point.
Wyndham Grand Rio Mar
Oceanfront holes like this one at the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar abound in Puerto Rico.
If you like to stay at one place that has it all, the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar is a top choice (I’ve eaten here a couple of times and really enjoyed the food, but have not stayed on property overnight). It is a big, full-service resort with about 400-rooms, multiple restaurants, a full casino, two-miles of uncrowded beach and two impressive golf courses. The Tom Fazio-designed Ocean Course is most popular thanks to its setting and famed coastal 16 th hole, but most serious golfers think the Greg Norman-designed River course is the better strategic design, with stunning El Yunque views and its namesake river well utilized throughout.
El Conquistador
The Arthur Hills-designed course at the El Conquistador Resort is a roller coaster ride with ... [+] dramatic elevation changes.
One of the island’s most well-known resorts is big and sprawling, with family friendly amenities such as a waterpark and private beach island with ferry service. It’s one of the more affordable golf resorts, the kind of place that makes you wear a plastic wristband when in residence. El Conquistador is not part of any glonal brand or loyalty program. The Arthur Hills course is a roller-coaster ride with the biggest elevation changes on the island, dramatic views, some blind shots, and it’s the kind of course you should play twice (at least) if you are here, because it’s a lot more fun once you know your way around. On the very north end of the East Coast.
Palmas Athletic Club
On the central East coast, south of El Conquistador, sits this 36-hole facility with another Golfweek Top 50 layout (tied for 37th), the Rees Jones designed Flamboyan. At over 7100-yards from the tips and ocean views, it is the more desirable choice here, but the welcoming Gary Player designed Palms course, more resort-style and user-friendly is also great fun, and both are bargains, open to the general public. Palmas is unusual in that it is not a resort, though it is located in the Palmas del Mar community which does have vacation rentals in addition to extensive sporting facilities that include equestrian, water sports and the largest tennis center in the Caribbean, with 20 courts (grass, clay and hard).
RIO GRANDE, PUERTO RICO - MARCH 24: Rafael Campos of Puerto Rico reacts after making his birdie ... [+] putt on the 18th green during the second round of the Puerto Rico Open at Coco Beach on March 24, 2017 in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. (Photo by Michael Cohen/Getty Images)
Every local golfer I spoke to described Punta Borinquen as the island’s hidden gem—and best bargain, at under fifty bucks. It’s perched atop dramatic seaside cliffs in the Northwest, and is Puerto Rico’s oldest full-sized layout, built by the Army in 1940—and said to be a favorite of President Eisenhower’s. When the army base closed in 1973 it became a public course, and because it is near Royal Isabela, these make a great one-two travel punch.
On the South Coast near the popular tourist town of Ponce is the Hilton Ponce Golf & Casino Resort , with its 27-hole Costa Caribe Golf & Country Club .
Also on the South coast is the island’s budget pick, the very affordable El Legado Golf Club , designed by local golf star Chi Chi Rodriguez. It also has rental villas onsite.
Puerto Rico has long been one of the top tropical island destinations in golf, travel, but it just keeps getting better and better, and there’s something for everyone, at every price point, and plenty to do off the courses.

9 Active Beach Vacations With Snorkeling, Hiking, and Endless Water Sports
If you're not the type to lounge on the sand all day, get inspired by these exhilarating itineraries.
Aleh Varanishcha / Getty Images
One of the best goals you can make for an upcoming trip is to return home feeling healthier than when you left. While beach vacations aren't always conducive to staying active, working in activities like hiking or snorkeling is an easy way to experience everything the destination has to offer. Not only does being more active help you feel healthier on vacation, it gives you more scope to appreciate where you are.
We've scoured the globe for the best active beach vacations, from over-water rock climbing in Thailand to hiking in Acadia National Park. Here are nine exhilarating options for travelers who love outdoor adventure as much as the coastal lifestyle.
Canggu, Bali
From Seminyak to Jimbaran, each of Bali's beach towns has its own personality. In the Canggu area, there's a large community made up of expats and locals who have honed a culture of healthy eating, surfing, and mindful yoga sessions. If you're looking for a yoga retreat in an idyllic setting, look into training at The Practice Bali . The main studio is open-air with a gorgeous thatched roof, making it the perfect place to strengthen, restore, and strike your best savasana pose.
Guanacaste, Costa Rica

Costa Rica's northwestern coast boasts incredible beaches and an active culture — which isn't surprising considering people come to Guanacaste to do every water sport imaginable. This area is a major windsurfing destination, while Jet Skiing, swimming, snorkeling, surfing, and diving are also quite popular. No resort in the region nails the detox-retox culture quite like the W Costa Rica - Reserva Conchal , offering an active lifestyle paired with a happening nightlife scene, Here, you can golf, snorkel, kayak, bike, trail run, and squeeze in a daily gym workout without ever leaving the hotel.
Todos Santos, Mexico

About an hour's drive north of Los Cabos on the west coast of Baja California Sur is the fast-growing surf town of Todos Santos . While the area has surged in popularity in recent years, it has managed to retain the laid-back charm of a still-undiscovered destination. In terms of staying active, it's the perfect place to indulge in a week of surfing lessons, whether you're a first-timer or a sage surfer honing your technique. While Los Cabos is known for choppy waters that aren't necessarily inviting to swimmers, Todos Santos has several great beaches for swimming and snorkeling (try Playa Los Cerritos and Punta Lobos, for starters). Many accommodations here have a boutique vibe — Hotel San Cristóbal and Paradero Todos Santos are among the town's fan favorites.
Acadia National Park, Maine
If you're looking for a domestic vacation that promises just as much time on the hiking trails as it does on the beach, you can't do better than a trip to Acadia National Park . The dog-friendly park is home to more than 150 miles of trails, with some of the most popular hikes including Cadillac Mountain (easy), the Gorham Mountain Loop (more challenging), and tougher, iron-rung routes like the Beehive Loop . Unwind after a strenuous morning of hiking at Seal Harbor Beach or along the shores of Echo Lake.
Railay Beach, Thailand

Railay Beach isn't just known for its soft white sand and laid-back Thai atmosphere, it's also famous because of its wide range of rock climbing opportunities. The area, which is just outside the city of Krabi in southern Thailand, is flanked by limestone cliffs that climbers of all skill levels come from all over the world to scale. While novices can take on beginner-level courses, more experienced thrill-seekers might want to try deep water soloing, which lets you free climb on cliffs jutting out over the ocean — the only downside is you'll plunge into the water if you miss a hold. Hop on a boat from Krabi and spend the day at Railay Beach, where you'll find several guided rock climbing excursions to choose from.
Lanai, Hawaii

At the Four Seasons Resort Lanai , create your own Hawaiian-island wellness retreat by blending healthy menu options, yoga sessions, workout classes, and plenty of rest and recreation. Golf enthusiasts can hit the links at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Manele Golf Course , which boasts ocean views and cliff-perched holes, while tennis and pickleball players can take lessons before indulging in a sports massage. Overall, the Four Seasons Resort Lanai encourages holistic wellness — in other words, reveling in relaxation time as much as active time in a luxurious, tropical setting.
Galápagos Islands, Ecuador
Michele Westmorland / Getty Images
You'll find you're never not moving in the Galápagos Islands, whether you're trying to spot native wildlife by land or sea. Several islands in this archipelago about 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador are known for their hiking trails. Be sure to do the Frigate Bird Hill hike on San Cristobal, and on Isabela, hit the trails around Sierra Negra, an active shield volcano and one of the world's largest craters. For scuba fans, some of the best dive sites include Wolf Island (where you'll likely spot turtles), Darwin Island, and Punta Carrión.
Crete, Greece
While most Greek islands are all about beach life — from swimming and boating to sunbathing and beach clubbing — Crete offers far more hiking terrain. The landscape here transitions seamlessly from rocky beaches to jungle topography so you can spend your days hiking to far-off beaches and gorges. Head south to Samaria Gorge for a scenic six-hour hike — the longest gorge trek in Europe — or Zakros Gorge on the eastern end of the island, also known as the Gorge of the Dead (it once served as a burial ground for the ancient Minoans).
St. Lucia, Caribbean
Marc Guitard / Getty Images
Aside from its stunning beaches and delicious food , St. Lucia is one of the best hiking destinations in the Caribbean. The Gros Piton and Petit Piton trails are two popular treks for outdoorsy travelers keen on exploring the island's emblematic twin peaks. There are also water activities aplenty, including tennis, beach volleyball, sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, and snorkeling, available via St. Lucia's many luxury properties, like Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort .
