Kelly has been a model of consistency and productivity since making his first PGA TOUR Champions start in 2017. He was selected as PGA TOUR Champions Rookie of the Year after an impressive first season that included two wins, 10 top-10 finishes over 20 starts, and setting a PGA TOUR Champions record with 16 consecutive rounds in the 60s, breaking Hale Irwin’s 18-year mark. The 54-year-old Wisconsin native’s win total now sits at eight, including his first major title at the 2020 Bridgestone SENIOR PLAYERS Championship. Kelly currently sits atop the Charles Schwab Cup Money List on strength of 14 top-10 finishes over 27 starts, including two wins. In his last four starts he finished first, second, tied for eighth, and sixth. During his PGA TOUR Champions career Kelly has amassed 49 career top-10 finishes to go with $8,136,107 in prize money.

Furyk, 51, became the 19 th  player in PGA TOUR Champions history to win his debut with his victory at the 2020 Ally Challenge. He went on to join Bruce Fleisher in September as the only players to win their first two starts on the senior circuit after his win at the PURE Insurance Championship. Phil Mickelson became a member of the exclusive fraternity a month later. Furyk grabbed his third, and most recent, PGA TOUR Champions title at the 2021 U.S. Senior Open Championship in July. The victory marked his first senior major and second overall, adding to his U.S. Open Championship win in 2003. Notably, among Furyk’s 188 top-10 finishes on the PGA TOUR was a T-3 effort at the 2008 BMW Championship at Bellerive in St. Louis. Ten years later, again at Bellerive, Furyk¾serving as the U.S. team captain¾announced the 2018 U.S. Ryder Cup team members. The Florida resident has continued his consistent play since turning 50 by finishing inside the top-25 in all 17 starts of his PGA TOUR Champions career, including 10 top-10 outings. Furyk currently ranks No. 2 on the Charles Schwab Cup Money List and his three wins this season rank No. 1 on TOUR.

Els, 51, made his PGA TOUR Champions debut in January of 2020 with a T-2 finish at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai. He grabbed his first senior victory two starts later at the Hoag Classic. The South African is ranked No. 4 on the Charles Schwab Cup Money List with 14 top-10 finishes during a rookie campaign currently comprised of 26 starts, two wins, two second-place outings and one third-place finish. Els is the owner 47 international victories and 19 PGA TOUR titles, including four major championships¾two U.S. Open wins in 1994 and 1997, along with two The Open Championship titles in 2002 and 2012. The “Big Easy” played in the 1992 PGA Championship at Bellerive Country Club in just his second start in a major and finished T-17 at Bellerive in 2008 at the BMW Championship. During his 32 years as a professional golfer, Els is ranked No. 11 in career prize money with more than $51 million in earnings and in 2015 was named the recipient of the Payne Stewart Award by the PGA TOUR in recognition of character, sportsmanship, and dedication to charitable giving.

Haas burst on to the PGA TOUR Champions scene in 2005 grabbing Rookie of the Year honors and proceeded to win 14 times in his first five years on the senior circuit. In total, he currently has 18 PGA TOUR Champions wins, including three majors and two Charles Schwab Cup titles. The 67-year-old St. Louis native is one of only six players to win the coveted Schwab Cup more than once, and his $19,359,051 in career PGA TOUR Champions earnings ranks No. 4 all-time. Haas, the 2004 Payne Stewart Award recipient, has nine-career PGA TOUR victories to his credit¾with a T-62 effort at the 1992 PGA Championship at Bellerive among his TOUR finishes¾and was the 2015 U.S. team Presidents Cup winning captain.

Lehman, 62, claimed five wins on the PGA TOUR, including The Open Championship in 1996. Since joining the PGA TOUR Champions in 2009, he has recorded 12 victories, with three majors. Lehman has logged at least one victory in 9 of his 12 seasons on the senior circuit to go with 88-career top-10 finishes. The Arizona resident is a two-time winner of the Charles Schwab Cup, joining Haas, Hale Irwin, Tom Watson, Loren Roberts and Bernard Langer as multiple winners of the title. In 2010, Lehman received the Payne Stewart Award, the same year he won the Senior PGA Championship.

Andrade enjoyed a successful PGA TOUR career that included four wins, plus a T-12 finish at Bellerive in 1992 at the PGA Championship. The 57-year-old made his PGA TOUR Champions debut in 2014 before a breakout year the following season that consisted of three wins and a fourth-place finish on the money list. With two top-10 finishes this season Andrade is currently ranked No. 51 in Charles Schwab Cup points.

The Ascension Charity Classic presented by Emerson will be one of the premier Regular Season events on the PGA TOUR Champions in 2021, which will give way to the Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs — a season-ending, three-tournament series used to determine the TOUR’s season-long champion. Due to the circumstances related to the COVID-19 pandemic, PGA TOUR Champions has combined its tournaments in 2020 and 2021 to form one season, and the next Charles Schwab Cup champion will be crowned in November 2021 at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship.

Recent PGA TOUR Champion winners include “rookie” sensations Phil Mickelson, Els, and newly minted 2021 U.S. Senior Open Champion Jim Furyk. Other winners from last season include names like Darren Clarke, Miguel Angel Jimenez, and Bernhard Langer.

Update: July 19, 2021

Mo. dept of tourism joins ozzie smith, craig berube, jack nicklaus, tom watson..

St. Louis sports icons Ozzie Smith and Craig Berube join the Legends Charity Challenge presented by World Wide Technology with Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson.

Officials of the Ascension Charity Classic presented by Emerson announced today that former St. Louis Cardinals Hall-of-Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith and St. Louis Blues Stanley Cup-winning head coach Craig Berube are the third and fourth members of the tournament’s signature event, the Legends Charity Challenge presented by World Wide Technology. Smith and Berube join golf’s greatest champion Jack Nicklaus and Missouri native and World Golf Hall-of-Famer Tom Watson to create a powerhouse foursome that will compete in an exhibition match to benefit charity.

The Legends Charity Challenge will take place on Saturday, September 11, following the final pairing of the tournament’s second round, and will begin on Hole No. 10 at Norwood Hills Country Club. “Bringing together two St. Louis legends like ‘The Wizard’ and our Stanley Cup-winning coach Craig Berube, with arguably the greatest golfers of all time, is a dream come true for our inaugural event,” said Nick Ragone, Executive Vice President, Chief Marketing & Communications Officer, Ascension. “It’s going to be one highlight of so many for St. Louis fans and most important, proceeds will benefit two amazing charitable organizations.”

Smith began his Hall-of-Fame career with the San Diego Padres in 1978, where his talent as an infielder was evident from the start. He joined the Cardinals following the 1981 season and helped lead the team to three National League pennants and the 1982 World Series title. Over his 19-season major-league career, Smith received 13 Gold Glove Awards and was named to 15 All-Star teams. Known as “The Wizard,” Smith combined athletic ability with acrobatic skill to become one of the greatest defensive shortstops of all time. He retired in 1996, the same year the Cardinals retired his number, and in 2002, was elected in his first year of eligibility to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Berube played more than 1,000 NHL regular season games from 1986 to 2003 before entering the coaching ranks of professional hockey. In 2016, he was named the head coach of the American Hockey League’s Chicago Wolves, once an affiliate of the St. Louis Blues. Berube moved into an assistant head coaching role with the Blues the following season before taking over the head coaching responsibilities on an interim basis in November 2018. The Canadian led the St. Louis Blues to the organization’s first Stanley Cup title in 2019, and in June of that year the Blues dropped the “interim” tag from Berube’s title and officially named him the 26th head coach in the franchise’s history.

The pairings for this marquee competition will feature Nicklaus and Smith versus Watson and Berube in a nine-hole team scramble, match-play format.

The teams will compete for a $25,000 purse to benefit First Tee of Greater St. Louis and PGA REACH.

Each hole will be given a dollar value that will be awarded per hole to the winning team’s charity. Nicklaus and Smith will compete for PGA REACH, with Watson and Berube teeing it up for First Tee of Greater St. Louis.

With tickets for the 2021 Ascension Charity Classic presented by Emerson now on sale, tournament officials announced a new charity event to be headlined by golf’s greatest champion Jack Nicklaus and Missouri native and World Golf Hall of Famer Tom Watson.

“St. Louis has long been a passionate sports town, with a great history in golf—highlighted most recently during the 2018 PGA Championship—and I’m delighted to have the opportunity to be a part of this inaugural PGA TOUR Champions event,” Nicklaus said. “I was fortunate to play a U.S. Open and PGA Championship at Bellerive, and the Ryder Cup at Old Warson 50 years ago this September.

“There is a special connection I have with Norwood Hills Country Club through my good friend and longtime caddie, Bruce Edwards,” said Watson.

The inaugural Legends Luncheon will take place on Thursday, July 29, at Norwood Hills Country Club. The Legends Luncheon will showcase Nicklaus and Watson sharing stories from their playing days and a Q&A with attendees. Luncheon attendance will be limited to the purchase of tables of 10 with all proceeds benefiting charity, including the tournament’s three primary beneficiaries. Support for the Legends Luncheon can be secured through emailing [email protected] or by calling the tournament office at 314-938-2828.

Nicklaus’ and Watson’s involvement with St. Louis’ inaugural PGA TOUR Champions event will also extend to the Legends Charity Challenge presented by World Wide Technology during tournament week on Saturday, September 11. Taking place at Norwood Hills Country Club, the Legends Charity Challenge competition will feature Nicklaus and Watson together with two additional celebrity members to create a powerhouse foursome that will play a nine-hole exhibition match to benefit charity.

Additional celebrities and details on how to support the event or be part of the fun will be announced in the coming weeks.

“I also competed as defending champion in the 1960 United States Amateur Championship at St. Louis Country Club,” said Nicklaus. “I look forward to being back to St. Louis in September as a part of this senior event at Norwood Hills, and joining Tom Watson in July for the Legends Luncheon. Outside of having professional golf return to St. Louis—which is good for both the region and PGA TOUR Champions—I applaud the event’s mission to give back to and enhance the north St. Louis community.”

“I am very much looking forward to joining the great Jack Nicklaus for the Legends Luncheon and the Celebrity Challenge on Saturday, September 11th.”The Ascension Charity Classic presented by Emerson is going to be a great addition to the St. Louis sports scene,” said Watson. “The fans will love watching all the great players, the players will enjoy everything St. Louis and Norwood Hills have to offer and the tournament is going to make a positive charitable impact within North County.”

The first playing of the Ascension Charity Classic presented by Emerson is set for the week of Sept. 6-12 after being forced to reschedule from October 2020 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Tickets for the tournament can be purchased at ascensioncharityclassic.com. Two types of weekly admission options are available, a Clubhouse Ticket as well as a Grounds Ticket. Daily tickets are also offered. Tickets start at $20, and kids 16 and under can attend for free with a ticketed adult. Please note that should the tournament be hosted without fans because of the continued impact of the pandemic, ticket holders will receive a full refund. Several charities have been identified as beneficiaries of the Ascension Charity Classic and its coinciding events, including Marygrove, a residential facility for children and teens; the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis; and Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater St. Louis. “It’s such a thrill and honor to have the greatest golfer of all-time, Jack Nicklaus, help kick off the inaugural Ascension Charity Classic presented by Emerson, and to be joined by eight-time major winner and Missouri native Tom Watson will make this a truly special event,” said Nick Ragone, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for Ascension

Three PGA players including Hale Irwin serve as ambassadors for Ascension Charity Classic at Norwood Hills CC

The Ascension Charity Classic presented by Emerson, the PGA TOUR Champions event that will be hosted at Norwood Hills Country Club, announced earlier that three players, including World Golf Hall of Fame and all-time PGA TOUR Champions career winner Hale Irwin, have joined the team as brand ambassadors for the inaugural tournament, which will take place this fall during the week of Sept. 6-12.

Irwin, a Missouri native, has 45 PGA TOUR Champions victories, including six major championships, and he has claimed two Charles Schwab Cup titles. Irwin is a 20-time winner on the PGA TOUR, including three U.S. Open victories.

Hale Irwin will be joined on the Ascension Charity Classic presented by Emerson ambassador team by former The Open Champion Tom Lehman and four-time PGA TOUR winner Billy Andrade. Lehman has notched 12 PGA TOUR Champions victories, including three senior major championship wins and two Charles Schwab Cup titles, while Andrade has recorded three victories since turning 50.

“We couldn’t have asked for three more engaging and representative brand ambassadors for the Ascension Charity Classic presented by Emerson,” said Nick Ragone, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing and Communications Officer for Ascension. “Both Hale Irwin and Tom Lehman have been honored by the PGA TOUR with the Payne Stewart Award in recognition of their character, sportsmanship, and dedication to charitable giving, and Billy Andrade is a recipient of the Charlie Bartlett Award, given to playing professionals by the Golf Writers Association of America for their unselfish contributions to society. This tournament is all about giving back and investing in underserved communities, and all three of these players have spent a career doing that as well.”

“I am proud to be an ambassador for our newest tournament on the PGA TOUR Champions,” said Irwin. “Ascension’s commitment to take the lead in bringing professional golf back to St. Louis and to Norwood Hills Country Club will greatly benefit the region. The opportunity to reconnect with golf fans and many friends during tournament week at the Ascension Charity Classic presented by Emerson, while being a part of raising money for North County St. Louis charities, is exciting.”

“There was a genuine sense of excitement when we first learned that the Ascension Charity Classic presented by Emerson would be a regular PGA TOUR Champions stop,” said Lehman. “It means that we’ll be visiting St. Louis every year, which we know is one of the great sports towns and golf regions in the country. Just seeing the buzz and excitement at the 2018 PGA Championship reminded us of how much we appreciate coming back to St. Louis, and I couldn’t be more proud of being a tournament ambassador.”

“I was honored to be invited to the initial press conference in October 2019 to introduce the Ascension Charity Classic presented by Emerson, and was able to take a tour of Marygrove, one of the charitable beneficiaries of the tournament,” said Andrade. “It was a wonderful experience to see first-hand how this tournament will make a difference for the community. Working with both Ascension and World Wide Technology, St. Louis has become something of a second home for me, and I can’t wait to compete at Norwood Hills in September.”

Recent PGA TOUR Champion winners include “rookie” sensations Jim Furyk and Phil Mickelson. Both are members of an exclusive club of only four players to win their first two PGA TOUR Champions starts. Other winners from last season include names like Darren Clarke, Ernie Els, Miguel Angel Jimenez, and Bernhard Langer.

In October 2019, Ascension and the PGA TOUR Champions announced a four-year partnership to host a new professional golf tournament in St. Louis. The Ascension Charity Classic presented by Emerson will support North St. Louis County communities and surrounding areas, including the tournament’s three primary beneficiaries: Marygrove, a residential treatment and support facility for children and teens struggling with debilitating emotional and behavioral issues resulting from abuse, neglect and other trauma; the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis; and Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater St. Louis.

Harrington wins at Norwood Hills to continue hot play on PGA Tour Champions

Stu durando.

  • Sep 11, 2022

Eventual champion Pádraig Harrington acknowledges the crowd after recording a birdie on the fifth hole in the final round of the Ascension Charity Classic on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2022, at Norwood Hills Country Club.

  • Laurie Skrivan, Post-Dispatch

Y.E. Yang sighs after missing a putt for birdie on the 18th hole in the final round of the Ascension Charity Classic on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2022, at Norwood Hills Country Club. He finished in second place.

After carrying the weight of a slim lead throughout Sunday afternoon and weathering it to win the Ascension Charity Classic, Padraig Harrington held a whopper of a trophy for an endless string of photos.

He was perfectly agreeable as sponsors, volunteers, politicians, organizers, club staff, well-wishers and nearly one photo bomber posed while he continually shifted the weight of the trophy.

It’s hard to imagine he had to take as many photos after his three PGA major championship wins.

“When you win a tournament,” he said, “you’re happy to do anything.”

Playing his first year with the PGA Tour Champions, Harrington, 51, won his third tournament of the season to remain in the hunt for the Schwab Cup, which goes to the player with the most winnings each year.

He finished at Norwood Hills Country Club with a 3-under 68, his worst round of the tournament, to edge Y.E. Yang by one shot and Steve Stricker by two. Harrington was 14-under par for the three rounds after David Toms won last year’s inaugural event at 10-under.

“We’ve all had our day in the sun and our glory, but we get to come out and wave to the crowd and swan around like we’ve done something,” Harrington said. “And if we play well, we get to relive all of the pressures. We’re probably not as good as we were at handling the pressure, but we’re probably smarter.”

Harrington stated after the first round that he’s never been particularly strong playing with a lead, and he had some tough moments while trying to protect his position. He had a double bogey on the fourth hole, but countered with five birdies on the front nine. Then as the pressure built, he bogeyed three of the final six holes, including No. 18.

Yang already was done and had barely missed a birdie on the final hole. Ultimately, that cost him a chance at a playoff.

“Maybe with three or four holes left, I was looking to the scoreboard,” Yang said. “I still had a chance and tried to attack the pin, but it was a good day.”

To Harrington’s credit, he responded to most of his mistakes with a good hole. After the bogey on four, he posted a birdie. His toughest challenge came when a shot on No. 13 landed behind a hospitality tent.

He had to hit over the large structure and ended up with a bogey that could have been much worse. He again followed with a birdie and then another. He said the birdie on No. 14 probably won the tournament.

“One thing you don’t want in a final round is drama,” he said. “But if you have it, you have to put up with it and get on.”

Harrington’s lead grew to three strokes on a few occasions, allowing him the luxury of a mistake here and there. He played the final round with Stricker. In two previous tournaments, he was in the final group with Stricker when he won.

That was impossible for Harrington to ignore as the day grew longer and Stricker hung around.

Play started late on Sunday after 2 inches of rain fell at Norwood Hills on Saturday night, creating some problems for the groundskeepers. All but two of the bunkers had to be rebuilt Sunday morning.

Harrington was the captain of the European Ryder Cup team in 2021 when Stricker captained the U.S. team. He won six times on the PGA Tour with three of those coming at The Open Championship in 2007 and 2008 and the PGA Championship in 2008.

He finished second three times early this year before winning the U.S. Senior Open Championship. After he won the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open on Aug. 21, he said he was asked within minutes if he would play at Norwood Hills and committed in the glow of another win.

Steven Alker continues to lead the Schwab Cup standings, but second-place Harrington hopes to make a push.

“The only way to catch Steve will be to continue to play well,” he said, “so I’ll need to win again, maybe twice, to come out on top. There are a lot of goals, but as the new guy out here, it’s a new start.”

Champions Golf Event Promises to Provide a Boost for North County

By Stu Durando, St. Louis Post-Dispatch

The initial pitch for St. Louis to host a tournament on the PGA Tour Champions was made with a stipulation, and it was important enough that organizers weren’t willing to bend.

The event was to be held at Norwood Hills Country Club or it wouldn’t be held.

Although busy through the years, the facility has not hosted a major professional tournament since 1973. But the selection of Norwood Hills, which is in Jennings, was about more than golf.

It was about bringing a charity event to north St. Louis County and pumping money into organizations and the community.

“Creating this was really contingent upon holding it in North County,” said Nick Ragone, executive vice president for Ascension. “That was the one condition we had as we started discussions. The tour came out and took a look and understood the vision.”

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.
