‘How You Like That?’: Blackpink announces comeback and world tour

K-pop superstars Blackpink returned yesterday, announcing new music dropping in August and the launch of a world tour this year.

As reported by Billboard via a press release from YG Entertainment, Blackpink are in the “final stages of recording a new album” that will start “a continuous large-scale project which will extend through the second half of the year.”

According to the report, an international world tour is in the works that promises to be “the “largest world tour in the history of a K-pop girl group.” YG Entertainment also mentions that “a lot of B lackpink-esque music has been prepared over a long period of time.”

No details were given about the contents or length of the album, but YG’s hint about music in the works may suggest the inclusion of some previously teased and unreleased tracks.

In the Netflix documentary “Blackpink: Light Up the Sky,” the girls can be seen recording a yet-to-be-released song called “Ready for Love,” which Jisoo and Jennie may have had a hand in co-writing.

In July of 2021, Hypebae reported producer LIL 27 Club, who has worked with groups like BTS and TXT, took to Instagram to share the full version of a demo song originally meant for a Hybe artist. During the Instagram Q&A, he said, “Touchdown’ is a song for girls, but what I uploaded was the first sketch version demo and this version was not sung by Blackpink.

Around the same time, NME reported media outlets spotted Jennie and Rosé together in Los Angeles, causing frenzy among fans and speculation as to what they were doing there. YG later confirmed “Rosé and Jennie are currently in America to work on music.”

Another supposed leak came from YG labelmate Somi during an Instagram Live last March. Somi was walking around a building and accidently opened the door to an occupied studio playing a song that featured a distinct voice that fans thought could be Jennie’s.

Somi then said during the Instagram Live, “ I hope you guys didn't hear anything"

"I'm very hot right now cos i was very surprised my heart dropped that seconds."

YG Entertainment later took down videos and clips of Somi’s Instagram Live, causing further speculation.

Teases for the quartet’s long-awaited comeback have been plentiful. Jennie herself confirmed the comeback back in March during an episode of a popular Korean variety show called “The Game Caterers,” saying, “Blackpink is also making a comeback soon. I don’t know if I’m allowed to say this, but since I’m the only Blackpink member here, I’ll just say it, please look forward to it. Thank you very much.”

Blackpink’s last comeback was 21 months ago with the release of their first full-length album, “The Album,” in October 2020. They also held their first online concert “The Show” in January of last year. Since then, all four members — Jisoo, Rosé , Jennie and Lisa — have kept busy with a variety of fashion deals for brands like Celine, Dior, Cartier, Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent and events like Paris Fashion Week. The global superstars were also named U.N. goodwill ambassadors for climate change last year for the 26th U.N. Climate Change conference. They made history in May by becoming the first Asian girl group to grace the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.

Individually, the members have been busy with their own activities. Rosé released her debut solo album “R” in March 2021 with the tracks “On the Ground” and “Gone.” She also performed nine songs on the show “Sea of Hope,” covering an assortment of English songs like John Mayer’s “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room” to Korean tracks with other artists like labelmate Lee Su-hyun of AKMU.

Lisa followed Rosé with her own solo album titled “Lalisa” in September last year, featuring the music video “Lalisa.”

Jisoo debuted in her first lead K-drama role in “Snowdrop” in December last year and became an ambassador to the popular online game “Maplestory .” She is the only member yet to make a solo music project debut.

Jennie has mostly kept to fashion or magazine projects, appearing on the cover of W Magazine last month. In April, she broke the internet with her bright new orange hair before making a stop in Los Angeles to promote designer glasses brand Gentle Monster and attend Coachella. She made a brief appearance in Grimes’ music video “Shinigami Eyes” five months ago.

Wow. YG really did Babymonster dirty, releasing a video that blatantly positioned them as a 1:1 replacement for Blackpink, only to turn around, toss them in the dungeon and announce a new round of auditions for a new Blackpink replacement.

They are the first K-pop girl group to reach this milestone

blackpink billions club how you like that

BLACKPINK have officially joined Spotify’s ‘Billions Club’ with their hit 2020 single ‘How You Like That’.

  • READ MORE: ‘Wonderful World’ review: overwrought and overlong

BLACKPINK’s ‘How You Like That’ crossed one billion streams earlier this week, becoming the first K-pop girl group to reach this milestone. Notably, group member Lisa had previously made it to the list in September 2023 with her viral solo song ‘Money’ .

The song has since been added into Spotify’s official ‘Billions Club’ playlist, alongside other hit tracks that have also surpassed one billion streams on the music platform. Other K-pop songs on the ‘Billions Club’ include BTS songs ‘Dynamite’, ‘Butter’ and more, as well as ‘Seven’ by BTS singer Jungkook .

BLACKPINK member Jennie also recently became the first female K-pop solo singer to cross 1billion views on YouTube with her music video for ‘Solo’ , which was released in 2018. The only other solo K-pop artist to reach 1billion views with a single video is Psy with his viral 2012 hit ‘Gangnam Style’.

Meanwhile, Jennie also recently dropped the single ‘Slow Motion’ with Brockhampton ‘s Matt Champion. The song is the BLACKPINK singer’s first release since she launched her own agency called Odd Atelier in December 2023 .

Odd Atelier was unveiled by  Jennie weeks after she and her BLACKPINK bandmates  decided not to renew their solo contracts with longtime agency YG Entertainment. However,  the quartet will continue group activities as BLACKPINK under the K-pop label  after signing a new “exclusive contract”.

In other K-pop news, Wendy  of  Red Velvet has dropped her sophomore solo mini-album ‘Wish You Hell’, alongside a music video for its title track. It’s her first release since her debut solo mini-album ‘Like Water’ in 2021 .

Blackpink singer Jennie is on a roll with her current single “One of the Girls,” which has turned out to be her biggest hit in the U.S. on her own. The tune, which is fronted by The Weeknd and which also features Lily Rose Depp, has been helping the K-pop superstar make history in many, many ways since it began debuting on Billboard charts months ago. Now, she can add one more record to her name.

“One of the Girls” is still improving on the Rhythmic Airplay chart, one of Billboard’s hip-hop and R&B-focused radio tallies. This week, the cut is up to a new high of No. 9, which is important to the singer–but so too is the length of time the smash has been able to find space on the ranking.

Jennie, The Weeknd, and Depp’s “One of the Girls” has now lived on the Rhythmic Airplay chart for 13 weeks, and that turns out to be the lucky number. With one more frame on the ranking, the cut has become the longest-charting of all time by any South Korean musician on this specific list.

Last week, Jennie was tied for this bit of history with another singer who broke out on his own and found great success after making his name in a K-pop group, Jung Kook. His single “Too Much” lived on the Rhythmic Airplay chart for 12 weeks, starting in late 2023.

Now, Jennie has passed Jung Kook, and she solely claims the longest-charting hit ever on the Rhythmic Airplay chart among South Korean acts. It seems like “One of the Girls” will be able to further distance itself from all other tracks by K-pop stars that have reached the tally, as it’s performing better than ever, and will likely hold on for at least several more weeks.

In addition to being the longest-charting song by a South Korean artist in the history of the Rhythmic Airplay chart, “One of the Girls” also breaks another record this week. The track is the first top 10 hit by any musician from the Asian country on this one list. Until only a few weeks ago, Jung Kook’s “Too Much”—which is powered by The Kid Laroi and which also credits Central Cee as a featured act–held that honor. It once rose as high as No. 13.

Earlier this month, Tyla announced that she is canceling her North American and Europe tour dates and pulling out a handful of festivals, including Coachella, due to a worsening injury.

“As much as this is something I would rather have dealt with privately, it’s important that I share what I have to share with you today,” she wrote. “For the past year I’ve been silently suffering with an injury that has tragically worsened. I’ve seen doctors and specialists with high hopes but the pain has only become more agonizing as has the severity of the situation.

“I am absolutely heartbroken to have to say this but as of right now I won’t be able to proceed with the tour. In consulting with medical professionals it’s become increasingly clear that continuing any festival or tour dates would jeopardize my long-term health and safety.”

Industry experts report BABYMONSTER and TREASURE are expected to match BLACKPINK's performance in Q2 & Q4 of 2024

B LACKPINK may be absent from YG Entertainment's 2024 roster, however, industry experts predicted a revenue increase for the company despite it. According to Lee Nam-soo, a researcher at this financial business, YG Entertainment is expected to make KRW 489.3 billion (approx. $372.8 million) in revenue,14% less than last year.

Furthermore, the company is predicted to make KRW 54.6 billion (approx. $41.6 million) in operational profit, 37.2% less than in 2023. This represents the drop in earnings brought on by the Pink Venom group's absence in 2024.

According to Edaily on March 12, 2024, Kiwoom Securities forecast that, even in the absence of BLACKPINK, YG Entertainment's performance would not decline as much as the market had expected. BABYMONSTER and TREASURE are predicted to match BLACKPINK's earnings up to KRW 19.1 billion (approx. $14.5 million).

BABYMONSTER and TREASURE combined are expected to generate profits closer to BLACKPINK

BLACKPINK members terminated their solo contracts with YG Entertainment in December 2023, however, they held onto the bargain of promoting the group together. However, the four girls have been on a hiatus from group activities since September 2023 after they wrapped up their world tour that raked in a whopping $256 million (over KRW 350 billion) through their BORN PINK world tour.

Kiwoom Securities reduced the target stock price of YG Entertainment on March 12, 2024, from KRW 85,000 to KRW 69,000, citing a decrease in earnings due to BLACKPINK's absence. The target price was downgraded, representing an 18.82% decrease. The investment opinion was 'buy' with KRW 43,800 as the closing price on March 11 (Monday) trading day.

According to the researcher Lee Nam-soo, the operational profit in the first quarter without the distribution of physical records would drop by 88.1% to KRW 4.3 billion, demonstrating the opposite base impact of BLACKPINK's concert from 2022 to 2023.

Lee Nam-soo told Edaily that other events, such as TREASURE's 20th Japanese fan gathering in the third quarter, BABYMONSTER's physical album launch in the second quarter of 2024, and their respective album comebacks are anticipated. He forecasted that the quarter would be nearly identical to what it was with BLACKPINK, even without them.

Performances by BABYMONSTER and TREASURE were intended to be supported by streaming and copyright revenue, actor management, K-content appearances, ads, the distribution of albums via YG Plus, etc. Furthermore, it was anticipated that operations by both groups would increase base revenues.

More about BLACKPINK members' latest solo endeavors

Group members Jennie, Lisa, Jisoo, and Rosé are busy pursuing their solo endeavors. Three have already established their respective companies, while Rosé hasn't announced anything yet.

Jennie launched ODDATELIER and confirmed working on her full-length solo debut alum. The artist recently featured on Matt Champion's single Slow Motion, released on March 8, 2024.

Lalisa Manobal, aka Lisa, launched her company LLOUD and has joined the lead cast lineup of the HBO original series The White Lotus, which will be released in 2025. She was recently spotted at the Louis Vuitton presentation at the 2024 Paris Fashion Week on March 5, 2024.

Jisoo established BLISSOO and has been busy filming for the upcoming drama Influenza and gearing up for filming the Korean film Omnipresent Reader's Viewpoint, starring alongside Nana, Lee Min-ho, and Ahn Hyo-seop. Reportedly, she is working on her solo music. However, nothing has been confirmed yet. Additionally, she was named the brand ambassador for London's Self-Portrait.

Rosé confirmed working on new solo music and shared a demo of her upcoming track Vampirehollie on her birthday. Fans are convinced that she will also launch her company soon. Recently, she was invited to the after-party at the 2024 Oscars .

TREASURE released its latest album, REBOOT, in July 2023, and girl group BABYMONSTER debuted in November 2023 with their single Batter Up, they are slated to comeback as a full group with Ahyeon on April 1, 2024 .

Industry experts report BABYMONSTER and TREASURE are expected to match BLACKPINK's performance in Q2 & Q4 of 2024
