Safari Shirts Read our Safari Shirts Advice Guide

The advice below is a summary. If you are looking for more information & expert advice then please click here for our full safari shirt advice section

  • It is important that you pack safari-suitable shirts for your children on safari which also offer maximum protection from the elements and defence from most biting insects.
  • Pack children's safari shirts in neutral, natural tones such as shades of khaki, brown, and green.
  • We recommend long-sleeved safari shirts for children with roll-up sleeve tabs over short-sleeved shirts. These enable boys and girls to roll their sleeves up and down to stay cool, keep warm, or to avoid sunburn on their arms. It also increases defence from most biting insects when sleeves are rolled down, which is further increased when the fabric is treated with insect repellent.
  • Kids' safari shirts with a collar also give your kids added protection from sunburn - and, again, from insect bites.
  • Look for children's safari shirts which have the following key characteristics: the ability to wick moisture to keep them cool, high level of sun protection (SPF50+ is best), and an anti-insect fabric finish assists in reducing bites from most flying and biting insects.
  • Pack more children's safari shirts made from man-made fibres (polyamide) than natural fibres (such as cotton). Man-made fibres are better at wicking moisture from the skin - and it is this movement of moisture which will keep them cool.

Number of children's safari shirts to pack for their safari: Up to 4-day safari: x 2; Up to 8-day safari: x 4; Up to 12-day safari: x 6

  • When packing safari trousers for your children, pack children's safari pants made from safari-suitable colours (shades of green, khaki, and brown) and lightweight, strong fabric. Nothing beats the feeling they will get when they wear safari trousers worthy of a great conservationist or early explorer.
  • Children's safari zip-off/convertible trousers are the simplest safari trousers to pack for children as they allow for maximum versatility. By removing or adding the legs, you are able to convert them from trousers when cool to shorts when hot. Children's convertible zip-off safari pants also save on valuable packing space by being two garments in one. The legs on the children's safari convertible pants also give added protection from the sun and defence from most biting insects - even more so when their safari trousers are treated with built-in sun protection and anti-insect treatment.
  • The ideal children's safari trousers and safari shorts should offer the perfect blend of the following functionality: lightweight with built-in ripstop for added strength, a high level of built-in sun protection (SPF50+ is best), and an anti-insect finish.
  • Children's safari trousers which are made from man-made fibres (such as polyamide) are preferred over those made from natural fibres (such as cotton) to keep your children cool while on safari. These fabrics also allow your child to dry off faster should their safari trousers get wet from a rain shower or from mucking about in a stream (a crocodile- and hippo-free stream of course).
  • What is more, you will be able to wash and dry your kid's safari trousers much faster when made from man-made fibres such as polyamide.

  • Children feel the cold faster than adults and so it is important when going on safari to pack a children's safari fleece to keep them warm and snug on early morning and evening game drives and through the African winter.
  • Pack a kid's safari fleece which is made from safari-friendly colours such as brown, greens, and khaki.
  • Pack a safari-coloured waterproof layer for each child if you are travelling over the rainy season for your safari.
  • Having lived in Africa through the rains we are also able to advise that the daytime temperature goes from very hot before the rains start, to much cooler once the rains have settled in. The difference may be as much as 10 to 15 degrees celsius below the average temperatures and so again we advise that a fleece or jacket is packed to keep you warm.

Number of boys' and girls' safari jackets or safari fleeces to pack for your safari: 1 x safari fleece or jacket; 1 x waterproof safari jacket should you be travelling over the rainy season.

  • If you are going on a classic game drive type of safari, then pack comfortable women's safari shoes to wear on game drive but which are able to double as good walking shoes for a walk in the bush - an activity we highly recommend. Note that if you do not have walking shoes with you on game drive then your guide may decide against a quick impromptu walk in the bush
  • Also take a pair of women's safari shoes to wear around the camp. These may be the same pair as your select for the above, but it may also be a pair of cooler sandals, pumps, or similar.
  • For full-on walking safaris make sure you take women's safari shoes which are made for longer hikes - and ensure that you walk them in properly before you go on safari. You may prefer low rise canvas trail shoes or leather higher rise boots - the preference is purely personal.
  • If you are going on a walking safari in sandy areas (check with the walking safari company you have booked with) then we suggest that you pack higher rise boots with a built in tongue - such as our Rufiji™ APU Safari Combat Boots - as this will minimise the amount of sand which goes into the shoe which will cause discomfort.
  • We would still take a a pair of cooler women's shoes or sandals for before and after walks when around the camp.
  • Safari tip: always check your shoes for small snakes, scorpions, spiders and insects before putting them on.

The advice below is a summary . If you are looking for more information & expert advice then please click here for our full safari hat advice guide .

  • For the best protection from the strength of the midday sun in Africa - for your neck and face - pack a wide-brimmed women's safari hat.
  • With mean high temperatures reaching mid-20 to mid-30 degrees Celsius on most safaris and with safari areas in Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, and Zambia high above sea level, the effects of the sun will be pronounced and the risk of being burnt by the sun will be high. A wide-brimmed women's safari hat is literally your first line of defence against sunburn.
  • Wide-brimmed women's safari hats also provide shelter when it rains. We find that a wide-brimmed safari hat definitely makes it more comfortable when you are caught out on a walk or game drive by a sudden thunderstorm or tropical shower, as at least your face remains dry and fewer drops go into your eyes.
  • Colour is key when choosing a women's safari hat - with neutral shades such as khaki, green, or brown the best. Your safari hat will often be the most conspicuous part of you while viewing wildlife on a walking safari.
  • Pack a women's safari hat which suits your safari style. Fortunately, there are more styles available for women today which range from leather hats to classically-styled indie and panama-shaped hats.
  • Modern wide-brimmed women's safari hats are also conveniently packable and are easy manipulate back into shape. A note though: not all hats are packable and should be carried with your carry-on luggage - and, even when a hat is packable, never crush your safari hat under a hard object - such as shoes or binoculars - when packing.

Number of wide-brimmed women's safari hats to pack for your safari: 1 x wide-brimmed safari hat per person. *Pack a warm and cosy safari beanie for cold mornings and the African winter too.

  • Pack a women's safari dress and a pair of women's safari skorts to add variety to your wardrobe.
  • Ensure that you select women's safari dresses and skorts which are made in safari-suitable colours.
  • A women's safari dress can also be very versatile when worn with tights, as a longer shirt, or tucked into your safari trousers.
  • Women's safari skorts - which are a combination of shorts and a skirt, with the shorts inside the skorts - are great for safaris in 4x4s as you are able to climb on to and off of the game drive vehicle without worrying about your underwear showing.
  • While, by their design, both safari dresses and safari skorts do allow for a good flow of air around the body to keep you cool, it is still worth looking for styles made in technical fabrics simply as they are usually lighter, easier to pack, and perform better in the heat.

Pack any combination of women's safari dresses & skorts to get the following totals: Up to 4-day safari: x 1; Up to 8-day safari: x 2; Up to 12-day safari: x 3

Women's Serengeti Safari sKorts with Stretch in Savannah

  • Walking in the bush while on safari is the quintessential experience. We recommend it to all who go to Africa.
  • Whether you go for a short nature walk with your guide or a multi-day walking safari, please ensure that you pack safari-coloured safari socks which offer a double layer for blister protection. Bad blisters ruin good walks.
  • Ankle gaiters are ideal for walking in the bush as they offer both your ankles and socks more protection from thorns, wet grass, grass seeds, and anything scurrying around at ankle level. A must-have for longer walking safaris, but useful on any bush walk.

Number of blister-proof socks to pack for your safari: Up to 4-day safari: x 2; Up to 8-day safari: x 3; Up to 12-day safari: x 4.

Number of Ankle Gaiters to pack for your safari: Pack 1 x Pair per person.

Mara&Meru Ultimate Anti-Blister Socks (Active, Everyday, Safari) in Olive Green

Safari canvas gaiters, rufiji™ safari canvas gaiters (unisex) in safari tan, rufiji™ safari suede gaiters (unisex), safari beanies & scarves read our safari beanies & scarves advice guide.

  • Pack a multi-functional Head&Neck scarf for just about all outdoor adventures, including safari. Head&Neck Scarves keep your neck and head out of the sun when it is hot, and provide an element of warmth too when it starts to get cold. They offer maximum versatility.
  • It can and does get cold on safari. See our Womens Safari Jackets and Fleeces page for more information on why this is the case.
  • Pack women's garments and accessories for your safari which keep you warm. Women's safari scarves, safari beanies, and safari gloves should be considered a packing essential over the African winter - and may also be required for some mornings on summer safaris too.
  • At the very least, we recommend packing a safari beanie on any safari as they are so small and light to carry in your luggage, yet have a big effect on how warm you are should you get cold. Keep your safari beanie in the bag you take on game drives. You may well get some envious stares from others who have not had the foresight to pack a safari beanie.
  • Further to the point above, for the African summer, pack a women's safari beanie just in case. For the most part, your women's wide-brimmed safari hat should keep you warm enough, but why take the risk? Please also take note of the altitude of the area in which you are going on safari. The Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania, as an example, is over 2000 metres above sea level and most camps are on the rim of the crater and so may have cold temperatures (morning and evenings in particular) and precipitation throughout the year, so we would recommend taking warmer safari accessories just in case.
  • Pack safari scarves, safari beanies, and safari gloves in safari colours.

Number of women's safari scarves, safari beanies, and safari gloves to pack for your safari: 1 x women's safari scarf; 1 x women's safari beanie; 1 x women's safari gloves - although you should be fine tucking your hands into your women's safari jacket or fleece to keep them warm.

The Safari Sunset Fall Winter 2024-2025 Collection by Tony Ward

This is how Lebanese/international fashion designer Tony Ward describes his latest collection of Fall Winter 2024/25:

Sitting on a warm sand dune,

With nowhere to go,

But everywhere to explore.

The sun is about to set.

Gazing through the binoculars, an army of souls traveled through the space in between the hills, moving in different directions.

In the midst of this rare fauna and flora, we spot interesting volumes and shapes on the wind-driven sand with oversized hats.

Sculptural forms with a clinched waist, flattering cargo silk pants mixed with sheer shirts, kimono-like midi-dresses with oversized pockets, wild animal prints, and palm trees, craftsmanship of shimmers sparkling the vast space.

It was a whole troupe navigating in an interesting color palette, contrasting the dryness in Rubin red, pink quartz, blue serenity, water green... with a touch of camel harmonizing the surrounding, yet standing out from it.

It’s the Tony Ward Ready-to-Wear Fall Winter 2024/25 collection—a winter collection on a warm overland journey.

The compass in our hands, pivoting to the magnetic north,

Not sure which direction to go,

We are traveling through time.

But which time?

Don’t Forget To Pack These Winter Safari Essentials

safari winter collection

Some people say that going on safari in the winter is the best time you can do it and I tend to agree. Months May through to September are perfect for overseas travellers, as the cooler climate over this time offers bountiful animal activity to be seen as long as one is prepared for the “fresh” mornings. Although you will have a deliciously warm hot water bottle and blanket provided to keep you snug on the vehicle, there are a few more items I would suggest packing. Here are my top 4 clothing essentials to pack on safari in the winter so that you don’t miss out on the adventure.

What To Pack On Safari A Ritchie 4415

1. A warm beanie and gloves

The early morning game drives are where you will experience the colder chill in the air as the sun is just beginning to rise. The early start coupled with the breeze blowing as the vehicle moves through the bush makes for an unpleasant start only if one is not properly prepared. Covering your ears is essential in order to warm up your entire body. A beanie may not be everyone’s first pick when it comes to fashion, however it will help a great deal in order to protect you from the sharp cold air, and there are some beautiful ones on the market.

2. A windbreaker

This is a great purchase to help the breeze from getting the best of you. They are essential to shield you from the wind and a lot of them you will find are also waterproof, although rain is not predicted in the winter time it is a nice bonus. Windbreakers however are not the warmest items of clothing you will find and that is why layering your clothing is so important. By wearing various long sleeve shirts underneath your windbreaker you will be sure to keep warm and be protected from the wind. The great thing about layering is that you can always take off items of clothing as the day starts to warm up. Any sporting clothing brand will sell great quality windbreakers, such as Puma and Adidas. Speaking of layering, that brings me to my next point.

3. Thermal underwear

This is something that not many people, other than our guides, think to wear but it is a game changer. It gives you that first layer of protection and actually traps your body heat keeping you as warm as possible. Thermal underwear under your many other layers and windbreaker will put you in great stead to face the cold weather.

4. Summery Items

My last point may seem a bit off course but stay with me. Although it is winter time and the mornings and evenings are chilly, the afternoons often warm up making for a beautiful sunny day. So don’t fall short and forget to pack your swimming costume, sun hat and sunscreen as you may be brave enough to take a dip in the pool. If you are staying at one of the Relais & Châteaux camps , Tree , Granite or Pioneer , the plunge pool in every room can be heated to take the cool edge off making for a pleasant afternoon in the pool under the African sun.

In a nutshell:

What To Pack For Safari in Winter

Winter at Londolozi is our dry season. One can expect little to no rain, chilly mornings and evenings (9°C) and warmer conditions during midday (25 ° C). Here is what you should pack for safari in winter…

The essentials:

  • A sun hat or two (preferably wide brimmed)
  • High SPF suncream
  • Binoculars (if you have, otherwise rent here)
  • Camera Gear (see specifics below)
  • A warm down jacket
  • Wind breaker / light jacket
  • A beanie and scarf for morning drives
  • A pair of warm gloves for morning drives
  • A few long-sleeve shirts
  • Cotton shirts or vests
  • One or two warm jumpers
  • Thermal undergarments (for those that feel the cold)
  • Walking shoes, sandals and boots
  • Warm socks for morning drives
  • Bathing suit
  • Winter evening wear
  • Active wear (if wanting to use our gym)

Winter in the bush is completely magical and not something that should be overlooked as it holds so much beauty to be seen and fun to be had. Animals tend to be more active due to the cooler weather,  cold mornings (which you are now prepared for) melt into warmer afternoons and then back into crisp evenings sitting around the fire defrosting with a glass of red in your hand back in camp. Winter is a wonderful time for safari as long as you are ready for it.

So, are you ready?

Are you visiting us in our summer? If you want to get ahead on your packing – here’s a list to help you . There are also some helpful FAQ on our website which you can head to here.

The winter experience is fantastic. The abilty to see the animals easily, with the greenery dormant, is a huge plus. Also, I’d recommend sturdy shoes for boarding the vehicle and hiking.

Thanks for the great tipps for winter safari. So far I have never had one because I like it a bit warmer. But with your good advice, it seems that winter is not so frightening after all.

Best safari clothing: brands, clothes & tips for African safaris

safari winter collection

You’re off on safari! You’ve done all the research , purchased the guide books , and the tickets are hot in your hand.

But most importantly, you’re getting ready to pack your ultra-light bag with everything you’ll need for your trip of a lifetime.

You’ve read all the advice you can handle (perhaps even this post on how to pack for safaris for your African bush adventure).

But when it comes down to the line, you still have no idea whether your favorite sweater is going to be a help or a hindrance, if you should pack jeans, how many pairs of socks are enough, and what on earth to expect once you are out in the wild.

What to wear on safari is something of a conundrum , the answer to which is entirely dependent on whether you are a complete slave to fashion and constantly worry about your appearance.

Or whether you don’t care if your trousers absolutely match your shirt and if your shoes co-ordinate properly with your camera bag.

So, in a bid to help sort the wheat from the chaff when it comes to safari style, this guide aims to highlight the best safari clothing brands and tips for your next trip to Africa .

African Safari Clothes: 7 Useful Tips

The African savanna has seen virtually every take on both the best and worst dressed safari goers , including some of the most practical and impractical safari gear around.

This includes everything from haute couture animal prints hot off the Milan catwalk, to Prada stilettos getting stuck in between the slats of wooden decks, and $300 silk scarves ripped to shreds by thorn bushes.

There are also tales of wild baboons getting hold of Victoria’s Secret lingerie and leaving it draped for all to see high in the branches of an acacia tree.

There are plenty of stories about complete wardrobe disasters—but to ensure you’re not one of them, here is a list of useful tips on how to dress for safaris .

1. Leave the luxury safari clothing at home

Couple on safari in Tanzania, posing in front of their four wheel drive

Lesson 1 in safari style is to NEVER take your best clothes into the bush .

If you find a pair of shorts, trousers, or a top you love and know that it would break your heart to have it ruined on safari, it’s probably best to leave it at home .

Instead, look for clothing that is specifically suited for the wild . And if the item comes in different colors, buy the range!

This way, over the years, you’ll acquire a variety of clothes which come everywhere with you. Look out for clothes that you can team together to create practical yet stylish outfits.

2. Keep your clothes for safari simple

Lesson 2 is learning how many of each item you will need . As a rule of thumb, always go with four of the basics.

Four pairs of shorts , four pairs of cut-off pants , four string vests , four t-shirts , four pairs of long pants , four button-through shirts (two of which are long-sleeved), four sets of underwear , four pairs of socks … you get the drift, I am sure!

When traveling in winter or during the colder months of the year, add to this scenario two lightweight long-sleeve t-shirts and two knitted sweaters , plus two fleeces or warm jackets , thermal long johns , gloves , a scarf , and a beanie .

When considering your safari apparel, ALWAYS pack a swimsuit and a couple of sarongs/kikoys . Even in the winter, it’s usually warm enough to suntan during the day and sometimes even swim.

3. Your safari wear should include comfortable shoes

Low angle view of two safari guides and an elephant bone

Lesson 3 concerns footwear . In the heat of the summer, it is best to pack at least two pairs of “bush slops” – flip flops (thongs) which are heavy-duty, waterproof, and good enough to handle walking in the light bush for game drives.

You may also need two or three pairs of fashionable flip-flops or sandals for around camp and evening meals, and a pair of good walking shoes ( Merrells ) for walking safaris.

In the winter, replace the walking shoes with walking boots and add a pair of lightweight faux-fur lined “trendy” flat boots for evening wear.

4. Safari fashion: accessories

Accessorize – that’s the key to lesson 4 – it’s the difference between a good safari wardrobe and a bad one. Two or three lightweight colored scarves and/or wraps are a must in any safari bag .

Usually, they have beadwork or applique of some description on them. These are useful for dressing up even the most conservative safari outfit—great if you’re looking to add a dash of glamor to your evening meals. Team them up with a couple of great “ethnic” bead necklaces and earrings .

Another essential item to include with your safari attire is a hat —and these can most certainly be fun. Pack in a couple of lightweight, floppy straw sun-hats, as these are great for game drives or tiger fishing.

Another good option is the usual peak baseball-style caps.

5. What to wear on safari – quality

Typical clothes to wear on an African safari

Lesson 5 is all about quality . Everything you take into the bush with you needs to stand the test of time.

This includes the elements of the African wild, the rigors of hand-washing, and bumping and grinding in the back of a safari vehicle halfway across Africa.

So it’s important to check your clothes before you pack to make sure they can be hand-washed, aren’t going to fall apart the first time you wear them, and are not likely to fade too drastically when hung in the sun to dry.

The material of your clothing is also important. When out in the wild, it is best to stick to strong natural materials like hemp , linen , leather , and wool .

Nylon and polyester also tend to provide adequate protection against the elements.

6. Best safari clothing brands

Wondering where to buy safari clothes? Most of the high-street fashion chains carry good quality fashionable safari clothes which will stand up to the average safari conditions.

As such, you may be able to avoid the need to go to specialist outfitters and camping/outdoor stores where things tend to cost a lot more.

And, of course, the big brands like Jeep (a favorite with safari goers because their clothes are practical, hard-wearing, and pretty at the same time) and Cat always have some great clothes for safaris—including some of the best safari shirts.

In addition to these, here are several more reliable brands to consider when buying safari clothes:

  • Columbia — this is a good option for those seeking affordable safari clothing that is still good quality.
  • First Ascent — if you’re buying safari clothes in South Africa, keep an eye out for this brand as it offers some excellent quality clothing.
  • Patagonia — while the brand is more expensive, they provide some of the highest quality outdoor clothing and gear on the market.
  • REI — if you’re shopping online, REI is often the go-to for outdoor gear. Their house brand is affordable and offers many items that will serve you well on your safari.
  • Ruggedwear — proudly South African, it is an official partner of the Field Guides Association of Southern Africa (FGASA).
  • Sapmok — footwear for every adventure. Comfy. Durable. And stylish.

7. What color clothing for African safaris

Woman observing African elephants from her safari vehicle

Finally, lesson 7 concerns white . Do you take white clothes into the bush with you? Hell yes.

As long as you don’t expect them to remain white for long and can accept the fact that no matter where you wear them, they’re bound to get a little dirty. It’s more or less a bush essential in my book because it reflects sunlight , keeps you cool and goes with everything .

Everyone says, “don’t wear white on a safari vehicle,” – but this is far from the truth. However, white isn’t the only color that’s good for safaris.

When dressing for safaris, the basic color range is simple: khaki , beige , white, and brown (or variations thereof).

Avoid black and blue during the day because they attract tsetse flies .

But do occasionally take these colors for evening wear when the tsetses have gone to bed.

What to Wear on an African Safari: Checklist

Father and kids enjoying the view of the Ewaso Ng'iro river in Samburu

Now that you’re all clued up with what to consider when deciding what clothes to wear on a safari, it’s time to pack.

Here’s a checklist to ensure you don’t miss anything.

Africa safari clothing list

Below are some of the most essential pieces of clothing to bring along on a safari:

  • 4 safari shirts
  • 4 casual t-shirts or vests
  • 4 safari pants or shorts
  • 4 pairs of blister-proof socks for safari walks

  • 2 swimming costumes
  • 1 waterproof jacket
  • 1 kikoy or sarong
  • 1 wide-brim hat or baseball cap

Safari gear and accessories list

In addition to clothing, you should include the following items when packing for a safari:

  • 4 pairs of anti-chafing tights (good for walking safaris)
  • 2 pairs of garden gloves (useful for gorilla trekking safaris)
  • 2 pairs of ankle gaiters
  • 1 pair of sunglasses
  • 1 bottle of sunscreen
  • 1 safari belt

How To Dress For Winter On Safari

Everyone thinks Africa is ALWAYS hot. Well it is – in summer. But winter temperatures can be cold and there are parts that get very, very cold. And none more so than the Okavango Delta, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Hwange National Park or the Busanga Plains in northern Kafue National Park, Zambia. The temperature variances between dawn and mid-day are as much as 59°F (15°C) and can even be as much as 68°F (20°C), or more. Early mornings are the coldest and it is actually clever to get moving just before dawn – which is usually the time when guests are woken up. As the sun rises, the temperature drops a bit more, so you want to be properly covered up before you even think of venturing out. All the Wilderness Safaris camps’ guest tents are constructed of canvas with shade cloth or clear view windows. In winter, external flaps for your tents will be let down at night, as well as internal flaps to close up the shade cloth windows. And yet I tell you, when a cold snap creeps through the region, it seeps through the pores and will find you in the depths of your blankets, sheets and duvets.

mm_gomoti_camp_july2014_43

It is very often in this wonderful warm space that I keep my clothes for the next morning. Right at the foot of my bed, IN my bed and next to the hot water bottle. That way they stay warm and toasty and quite acceptable for venturing into early on a crisp morning. I have actually also dressed IN bed too. It is quite difficult and definitely entertaining to watch, but it works for me! Now, what do you pack when you have a weight restriction and it is this cold? There are two parts to the answer, the first is layers and the second is thermals. The camps all do laundry that they pick up from your room in the morning and return beautifully folded and ironed that evening. So worrying about laundry and keeping clothes clean is not a problem.

The next thing is that you don’t want to have hugely bulky thick heavy clothing that means you cannot move, or if someone pushed you over, you would just carry on rolling over until you bumped into a stump or something. There are many excellent lightweight natural fabric thermal clothes that are made from merino wool or silk, or you can choose polyester blends, either way these snug-hugging garments are designed to keep moisture away and you ultra-warm. Think about your ski-kit or any outdoor brand clothing that is not bright red, or bright anything really, but more neutral or even black that will be good as a base layer in the bush. Then keep layering up from there with neutral colors, ending up with a warm jacket that will cut out the wind-chill factor that you will feel as you ride out on the back of the game viewing vehicle into the cold morning. My latest find is a down waistcoat over which I put an anorak, and with both zipped up, and a scarf tucked around my neck, warm woolen gloves, I am braced for the early morning cold.

toka_leya_mm_july_2013_73

The thing is, just around mid-morning, on a normal winter’s day, the sun is warm enough and you have to start peeling layers off. Only those cold snaps keep you covered well up to mid-day. Socks and good hiking boots will be your friends when you are sitting in an open vehicle and your feet are so cold you can’t be certain there is any blood circulating to your toes! Footwear is bulky and you want to have something that will make you feel good, feel comfortable, be just right for walking in the bush, over rocks and uneven paths, keep moisture out and keep you warm.

Very importantly, you don’t ever need to ‘dress up’ in camp – not even for dinner. One wardrobe is all that is needed for your safari. Even though every agent and safari operator has a proper packing list, you have to dress for your own style and comfort. Some of us feel the cold more than others – and there is nothing worse than being freezing cold on a four-hour game drive. All Wilderness Safaris vehicles have ponchos, which are canvas on the outside and blanket-lined on the inside, so that is another cozy cuddle-up barrier between you and the elements.

_mm_ltc_camp_aug15_24

But, you are warned, be prepared to layer off! The coldest morning can turn out to be beautifully warm by the end of your morning game drive. Winters in southern Africa are sunny, and the sun can, and does usually, get very warm by mid-day. Just be prepared for frosty early mornings and cold evenings, and then you will be comfortably prepared. Layer up, layer off, keep it light and thermal, neutral in color and you will be good to go!

Safari Outfit Ideas to Pack When You Finally Take That Dream Trip

Packing for a safari is a science: You need to be prepared for changing temperatures, high sun, and plenty of dust, as well as cocktail hour and a dip in the pool—and all of your safari outfits, plus toiletries and gear, have to fit in a soft-sided duffel with a strict weight limit. We polled our resident experts and trusted specialists for safari outfit ideas, whether you're staying in a luxe tented camp on the Okavango Delta in Botwsana or traversing the Sabi Sands game reserve in South Africa . Note that most safari outfitters will provide travelers with an itemized packing list, so check with yours about specifics (as well as any vaccines or medications you might need) before you go.

Getting there

Most safari camps are only accessible by small propeller planes, which don’t allow hard-sided luggage. Pack everything in soft duffels that can be easily tossed into the back of the plane or the back of a Land Rover (weight limits are strict, too, so make sure you check with the outfitter before you go). Our advice: bring along some low-tech entertainment and have your camera handy for the views. Go Pro's Hero 9 has built-in tech to help keep any footage you shoot looking steady, making it perfect for bumpy rides.

On a game drive

Specialists disagree on the details, but you’re generally advised to avoid red and white clothing (as well as anything Day-Glo) while on game drives because it can attract insects or make you more visible to certain animals. Instead, go for clothing in shades of khaki, brown, and olive, which help you to blend in with the environment and hide dust and dirt, and pair it with some sneakers with a decent tread (on most safaris, you don’t need serious hiking boots). You’ll also want to pack plenty of layers since it can be chilly in the early morning, and blazing hot a few hours later. Don't forget a hat to help keep your skin protected under the harsh midday sun.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Human, Person, Standing, Suit, Coat, Overcoat, Shirt, Sleeve, and Long Sleeve

Around camp

You’ll want casual, cozy clothes to wear while you’re lounging around camp in between your daily excursions. A durable sandal with some grip will work just fine, and don’t forget a bathing suit —many lodges or tented camps have gorgeous pools.

Safari chic dinner

Some travelers like to have a more dressed-up option for cocktail hour and dinner back at camp—think flowy, breezy dresses, flats that can withstand a little dust, and a warm scarf to wrap yourself up in. Jumpsuits are a great option since it eliminates having to pack both tops and bottoms for evenings. In terms of accessories, leave any really blingy jewelry at home and opt for a more simple, pared down look.

Winter in Africa: Going on Safari During the Wet Season

Visiting Africa should definitely be on everyone's travel bucket list, or at least make their top ten must-see destinations. Africa, is a vast and beautiful continent, which boast 54 countries that can't easily be generalized, and neither can the variety of African safari and sight-seeing opportunities on offer around the continent. Each hosting an exciting destination, offering a unique and profound experience. This makes making a decision about when and where to have your next African adventure slightly overwhelming as there are so many places to see. Such as the Maasai of Kenya . The sun shines in Africa all year round, blessing us with some of the most beautiful winters in the world, that means that no matter what time of year it may be, it is always a good time to go on safari.

Here are three reasons to book your next visit to Africa in winter.

Take solace in the shade..

This one may seem obvious, but it bears repeating. The African sun is hot, and can sometimes even be brutal making you and the game feel bothered and lethargic. This lessens their activity and your productivity making for a seemingly unpleasant experience. To avoid the blistering heat the game is most active during dusk and dawn, spending the rest of their day hiding under a large tree or shrub taking solace from the sun, this reduces the potential of viewing game as they are usually hiding out from the sun rays. In the winter, the game is more active, and the air is crisp and cooler making for a more pleasant experience for the game and for you.

Beat the crowds

The winter months in Africa, are arguably the slowest season for tourism. This means safari camps, lodges and bungalows are often less busy and crowded than in the popular summer and spring seasons. You will avoid the crowds and the general hustle and bustle that comes with a warmer safari visits. This allows you to really connect with yourself and your roots, experiencing a much more personalised and private safari experience, and if you're lucky you may even get your own private vehicle to make what is already such a rare and unreal adventure even better. You will also be able to take advantage of the off-season deals and discounts rates making your trip less expensive too.

African winters are unlike those anywhere else in the world, they are dry and cool with temperatures ranging from around 23 degree Celsius this makes for the perfect conditions to see exclusive animals and here's why. The winter months are drier this makes the Bush less dense allowing you to spot animals through the decaying shrubbery. The lack of water in winter means the animals will come out in search of watering holes, this guarantees some exclusive animal spotting and if that isn't enough to get you booking over winter then maybe the great mammal migration will. As winter approaches the mammal masses herds across the African plains and rivers as the season changes in search for rain-ripened grasses. This is known as ‘the greatest wildlife show on earth’ as it is the greatest mass movement of land mammals in the world. It's not only a chance to see what is listed as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the world, it also offers incredible views of plains dotted with huge herds of a variety of all different types of animals, volcanic grasslands, vast plains, rolling hills, rocky outcrops, rivers and forests. The migration is not just a way to see the tantalizing and organic lands that nature has to offer but it also attracts some of the continents most infamous predators, big cats, crocodiles and hyenas which are never too far behind. Visiting in right season will treat you to astonishing sightings of this natural phenomenon, a truly once in a lifetime experience. Do not miss out and book your winter safari today . I’ve Been on Almost 50 African Safaris, and These Are the 16 Items I Never Travel Without

From game-changing gadgets to sun-protective clothing, you'll be so happy that you packed these products.

Travel + Leisure / Reese Herrington

Africa has been one of my favorite continents to travel to since college when I got to study abroad in Zimbabwe. It was here that I experienced my first safari, and since then, I've returned to Africa 17 times and racked up close to 50 safari days in eight different countries.

My most recent safari experience was in Kenya's Masai Mara, which has the world’s highest density of wild animals. I spent a week with Basecamp Explorer , an ethical and eco-friendly African safari tour company dedicated to conservation, visiting three of their safari camps in Masai Mara National Park and the adjacent Mara Naboisho Conservancy. During my week in the bush, I saw a wildebeest being born (a first for me!), a leopard eating its kill in a tree, and more lions and elephants than I could count.

However, choosing the right safari operator is often easier than packing for the trip itself, which is truly an art form because most safaris require you to arrive and depart via small aircrafts — and there's always a weight limit for what passengers can carry.

Over the years, I've perfected my African safari packing list and am happy to say that on my most recent trip, I brought just the right combination of clothes, camera gear, and essential toiletries and extras like, a sun hat, a pair of boots, and binoculars to make the 44-pound bag weight limit. Here are my top 16 must-pack items to take on safari. I’ve also included recommendations from my travel writer friends, who are equally passionate about following big cats across the African savannah.

And one note on what not to pack: camo clothing. In some African countries it is actually illegal for anyone not in the military to dress in camouflage. In East Africa, it is also best to avoid wearing black, as this can attract parasite-carrying tsetse flies. This is less of an issue in Southern African countries.

Comfy White Sneakers

As part of Basecamp's conservation efforts, the safari outfitter encourages visitors to plant a tree in the Basecamp Tree Plantation and Nursery , which I made sure to do during my trip.  And, I did so in a pair of ACBC sneakers made from recycled materials.

I always pack stylish sneakers for safari so you can dress them up and down as needed, and the ACBC Evergreen Sneakers are incredibly versatile and sleek. The shoes are really comfy, and I love the breathability factor. They keep your feet cool on hot days and are trendy enough to pair with a long skirt, shorts, or jeans. Sizes for the ACBC Evergreen Sneakers are limited at Amazon, but your feet will be equally supported and stylish in a pair of Adidas Cloudfoam Pure-2.0 Running Shoes or Kufeiti Low-Top Canvas Sneakers .

To buy: amazon.com , $59 (originally $75)

Jack Wolfskin Routeburn Jacket

A lightweight technical jacket that can compress in your luggage is my favorite safari travel hack. Morning safaris head out before sunrise, and while it heats up fast once the sun comes up, for the first hour or so it’s cold and windy in the open vehicles.

I love my Jack Wolfskin Routeburn Jacket and take it with me pretty much everywhere I go. It is feather-light and packs down super small, but it is also very durable with its tear- and water-resistant construction. I’ve been to Kenya twice in the last year with this coat and I’m hard on my travel clothes, but it hasn’t shown any signs of wear and tear yet. And best of all, when zipped up with the hood on, it is entirely windproof and keeps me toasty on even the chilliest morning drives. The jacket also fits great; I’m short and curvy, so I love how the side panels are made from a stretchy material and the chest never feels too tight.

To buy: amazon.com , $133

Occer Compact Binoculars

A good pair of binoculars is another safari must-pack item, especially if you are interested in birdwatching. While you do get quite close to many animals, others are still a considerably far distance away, and binoculars can quickly bring them into your field of vision. I was super happy I had a pair of binoculars on me, for instance, when I witnessed the extremely rare sight of twin baby elephants who were just a few hours old.

The ones that I used had low-light vision focus capability, which is also a key feature of the Occer 12x25 Compact Binoculars that available at Amazon. The high-power, easy focus binoculars work for adults and kids, offering 12x magnification so you can get as close to the action as possible without missing a thing. They are also super compact and portable, making them easy to pack for a safari flight.

To buy: amazon.com , $66

Ray-Ban Erika Round Sunglasses

Whether you are on safari in South Africa, Botswana, or Kenya, one thing remains the same: you'll be closer to the sun (probably than you've ever been before). Polarized sunglasses are something that I never leave home without, and always make sure to have on deck for safaris. After all, you spend a lot of time looking through a camera lens on game drives, which causes plenty of eye strain on its own. Don’t let the sun add more. Polarized lenses not only increase clarity and contrast of your surroundings, but they also reduce glare and, in some cases, offer UV protection.

Ray-Ban is known for making some of the best polarized sunglasses in the industry and the Erika style works great for a safari. I love how the Light Havana/Dark Green frame and lens combo even has animal print flair.

To buy: amazon.com , $115 (originally $140)

Kelty Asher 55-Liter Backpack

Remember the bag limit I mentioned before? Well, I might also add that certain airlines typically won't allow you to bring a traditional suitcase with wheels. So, how are you expected to pack all of your gear? You'll need a trusty duffel bag or backpack to do the trick. I’ve traveled with both, but I prefer a backpack; I like to be able to carry my weight on my back as there is usually some walking with your bag required at the airport. Lately, I’ve been using the Kelty Asher 55-Liter Backpack, which is really comfy to wear, comes with a ventilated back panel, and is hydration compatible.

It is made with the company’s Fit Pro technology that allows the backpack to conform to your torso shape. It also is super easy to pack, and I love how the top is wider than the bottom, allowing you to stuff bulkier items in and out with more ease. This backpack comes in three other sizes (35L, 65L, and 85L), but I think the 55-liter option is a great size choice for travel. Plus, you can also use it for hiking, backpacking, and other activities.

To buy: amazon.com and backcountry.com , $150

Artfish Women’s Sleeveless Tank Top

My travel writer friend Lola Méndez was on the Basecamp Explorer safari with me, and I admit that I was super envious of her wardrobe — particularly this one tank top that she brought, which paired so well with all of her outfits. It was also breathable and great for layering, a.k.a. key elements for safari clothes.

“I packed an assortment of mix-and-match neutrals, the tried-and-true safari uniform," Méndez shared. "I stuck with lightweight fabrics, including cotton and linen, and breathable-but-appropriate styles such as midi skirts and tanks with thick straps. I wore my ribbed beige tank constantly in Kenya and then on safari in Tanzania with Sabubu Safaris .”

Taking a cue from Méndez's safari style, I'll be adding the Artfish Sleeveless Tank Top to my next packing list. It has a flattering square neckline and is made with a soft polyester material that's also very breezy.

Outdoor Research Sunbriolet Sun Hat

This is proving a popular year for travel writers to go on safaris in Africa because my other industry friend and fellow Travel + Leisure contributor, Katie Jackson , is heading off to Botswana in a few weeks for one. She’s super organized, so she’s already packed. One item that she says she's definitely bringing is a sun hat.

“Per my dermatologist’s recommendation, I’m packing the best-selling Outdoor Research Sunbriolet Sun Hat on my safari with Natural Selection ," she said. "In addition to the 360 degrees of UV protection, I love the side vents that keep my head cool in the African sun and the chin strap that I can adjust with one hand. I want to have my other hand free so I can snap photos of the lion cubs I hope to see."

To buy: amazon.com , outdoorresearch.com , and rei.com , $45

Lululemon Convertible High-Rise Hiking Joggers

Another item that Jackson packed for her Botswana adventure that I recommend packing are these two-in-one high-rise hiking joggers from Lululemon, which are designed for hiking and are made with water- and tear-resistant materials.

“At $198, Lululemon’s Convertible High-Rise Hiking Joggers aren’t cheap, but considering they turn into shorts in a matter of seconds, they’ll always have a place in my bag," she explained. “When I’m on safari in Botswana next month, it will be 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the day, but likely to drop close to freezing at night. I’ll wear these as pants in the cooler mornings, zip off the bottoms and stash them in the cargo pockets midday when I want shorts, and turn them back into pants in the evenings. Basically, you get two looks/vibes for the space of one!”

To buy: lululemon.com , $198

Tinsley Patchwork Romper

Every year I bring a different splurge outfit on safari, and this year, my showstopper look was the Tinsley Patchwork Romper from Cleobella. It folds up super easily, fits great, and pairs well with sneakers, lace-up sandals, and ankle boots.

Yes, this romper is white, which you might think is a bad color choice for a trip where you have to re-wear clothing, but not on safaris. Most camps launder and iron clothes daily for guests, so you’ll be able to drop it in the dirty linen basket in the morning and have it back for dinner.

  To buy : cleobella.com , $268

Hotouch Cotton Button-Down Shirt

Just like with any vacation wardrobe, packing clothes that can be worn on multiple occasions will take you far (and help lighten your load). For me, that one versatile item is a cotton button-down shirt like this Hotouch one from Amazon.

I like to pair a shirt like this with leggings or shorts. The sleeves roll up and down, so you can adjust it for temperature variations, and it's always good to keep in your bag for when you'll need extra coverage from the sun.  Plus, the shirt is made from 100 percent cotton, which makes the fabric durable, breathable, and not see-through.

To buy: amazon.com , $29

International Travel Adapter

I used to carry different travel adapters for different countries, and then would just make peace with the giant collection that I'd acquired over time. Once the mismatched adapters became too much to bear, I knew I needed to condense. So, you can only imagine how stoked I was when I found the Jmfone International Travel Adapter that has configurations for plugs around the world in one compact little cube. This smart travel adapter covers more than 160 countries, including all the African safari destinations.

My favorite part is that you can charge up to five devices at once thanks to its multi-USB design. It works great for charging my phone, camera, computer, and backup battery pack together so I don't have to keep changing them out or worry about limited outlet space. Note: It is not designed for high-power appliances like hairdryers and straighteners.

To buy : amazon.com , $20

Charles River Apparel Women’s Bristol Vest

If one thing is for sure, it's that you won't regret packing a layering piece like the Charles River Bristol Vest. I always bring the transitional outerwear staple along on safari, and usually pair mine with leggings and a scoop neck T-shirt so I'll be comfy. Vests are also a must-have because they're usually loaded with pockets, which you'll quickly find are unexpected perks when wrestling with smartphones and camera gear on a safari. After all, no travel wardrobe is complete without stylish-yet-functional items, right?

What's more, the Bristol utility vest by Charles River Apparel is flattering to a variety of body types with its longline silhouette, and I love the drawstring waistline that lets me feel confident in photos.

To buy : amazon.com , $48 (originally $57)

SteriPen Ultralight UV Water Purifier

I bring the UV water-purifying SteriPen with me everywhere I travel, especially if my destination doesn't have water that's safe to drink. While safari lodges will always have purified water for guests on hand, I’ve been in situations before where I’ve run out of water in the middle of the night and just wanted to grab a glass from the tap. This genius pen uses ultraviolet light to destroy over 99.9 percent of bacteria, viruses, and protozoa in just 90 seconds.

I’ve used it for months at a time to purify my drinking water, everywhere from Madagascar to Thailand. It hasn’t ever let me down. And, it is so small and lightweight to pack; it slides easily into my luggage and adds only 2.6 ounces of extra weight. Not to mention that it's also simple to use, with its one-button operation and rechargeable USB battery to re-power itself.

 To buy: amazon.com , $88 (originally $110)

Hi-Tec Apex Lite Mid WP Hiking Boots

If you are traveling during the muddy season, or planning to include walking safaris (these are truly a special experience that should not be missed if possible) into your itinerary, then a solid pair of lightweight hiking boots are a great thing to pack.

I like the Apex Lite Mid WP Hiking Boots by Hi-Tec for safaris because they are incredibly durable with their waterproof constructions and come stocked with cushioned memory foam midsoles for long-lasting comfort. They also feature good traction and steady grips on rough terrain, and have fork shanks to help with stability while still remaining flexible. Their mid-height silhouettes also protect your ankles from sharp objects and bug bites. And, not only are they great for safaris, but you’ll definitely be able to wear them on the trails back home as well.

To buy: amazon.com , $60

Repel 100 Insect Repellent

Every safari experience is different, but you can often expect to run into pesky insects on your trip. While some bugs are more annoying than dangerous, others like mosquitoes can carry potentially deadly diseases. Malaria is a reality in many parts of Africa and you should definitely consult with your doctor about the pros and cons of taking anti-malarial drugs on your safari. You can also up your defense by packing bug spray. My go-to is the Repel 100 Insect Repellent, which is currently $8 at Amazon.

I’ve used Repel 100 Insect Repellent before, and so have thousands of Amazon shoppers, 6,695 of whom give it a five-star rating. The pump spray bottle is easy to use and provides up to 10 hours of protection. I also highly recommend carrying a hydrocortisone cream with you in case you do get bit; it relieves the itchiness and redness.

Pro tip: Apply bug spray liberally, especially on dawn and dusk safaris as the mosquitos that carry malaria tend to bite when it's dark out. If your safari lodge has mosquito netting in your room, make sure to use it at night — in areas with mosquitos these will almost always be draped over beds.

To buy: amazon.com , $8 (originally $17)

REI Co-op Sahara T-Shirt

Like I've said before, the African sun is no joke. And while safari vehicles tend to have closed tops to block some of it out, you are still getting hit from the open sides. If you are prone to sunburn, a functional UPF shirt like this one from REI Co-op is a good choice.

It comes in a tank top and t-shirt style, both of which provide UPF 50 sun protection and are made with quick-drying fabric that have a soft and comfy stretch to it. Once you travel with the Sahara T-Shirt, you'll quickly find that it'll be the most versatile piece of clothing in your suitcase. You can wear it for sporty activities, beach days, and casual outings. And, you can even dress it up when your itinerary calls for it.

Best time to go to Africa

Now, to answer your question – When is the best time to go on safari in Africa?

…drum roll please…

The best time to go on a safari in Africa is during its dry winter season (June – October).

While everyone has their own memories of Africa they take away with them, the wildlife makes for some of the most magical to remember. Lucky for you, the vast continent of Africa boasts the widest diversity of wildlife in the world and is home to the most extraordinary wildlife sightings, spectacles, and gatherings than anywhere on the planet.

As most people travel to Africa to witness its glorious diversity of wildlife up-close and first-hand, winter in Africa, between the months of June and October, is undoubtedly the best time to go on the ultimate wildlife safari in Africa & here are just some of the reasons why.

#Excellent Game Viewing & Sensational Wildlife Sightings & Encounters

Peak safari season runs from about June to October across Africa.  Winter in Africa is synonymous with prime game viewing opportunities, unbelievable up-close wildlife sightings, and thrilling once-in-a-lifetime safari encounters, adventures, and experiences. Winter in Africa is when its vast and diverse array of wildlife species come out to play in full force – It is an unbelievable sight to behold!

Winter in Africa is the best time to go on safari

From watching herds of elephants striding across open plains, leopards lazily lounging on treetop hideaways, majestic lions basking in the glorious mid-day African sun, and massive herds of wildebeest and antelope running across the vast and wonderful savannah, to giraffes feasting on the lush tree-top greenery, hippos popping in and out of the water, and rhinos grazing in the distance, there are few things that compare to witnessing Africa’s remarkable wildlife roaming free in their natural habitat and the place they call home –  AFRICA!

#Witness the most MAGNIFICENT Wildlife Spectacles on the planet

Winter in africa is also the best time of year to witness some of the most magnificent wildlife spectacles in the world..

Have you always dreamt of seeing the Great Wildebeest Migration through Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park and Kenya’s Maasai Mara, witnessing up-close sightings of the renowned African Big 5 (lion, leopard, elephants, buffalo, and rhinos) in their natural habitat, particularly while exploring the Kruger National Park in South Africa?

Winter in Africa is the best time to go on safari

Perhaps you’ve always wanted to go endangered Mountain Gorilla trekking in the forests of Rwanda and Uganda, bare witness to the thunderous Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River bordering between Zambia and Zimbabwe, walk in the wild in Zambia, see the largest population of elephant herds in Botswana’s Chobe National Park, experience the Great Bat Migration from the Congo Basin to Kasanka National Park in Zambia, observe the most prolific big cat sightings in Kenya’s famed Masai Mara Game Reserve, or go on the ultimate safari adventure in the evergreen jewel of the Okavango Delta? Africa has no shortage of spectacular wildlife spectacles, sightings, and up-close encounters, most of which you won’t find anywhere else in the world than right here in the heart of the African bushveld.

#Favourable Weather Conditions for Safari & Game Viewing

Winter in Africa is the best time to go on safari

While Africa’s summer season is EXTREMELY hot and humid, its dry winter season is characterized by lovely and mild day-time temperatures, low humidity, fine clear skies, and minimal to no rainfall (in some parts of the country). The dry African winter season conditions, primarily due to the lack of rainfall experienced during winter in Africa, gives nature and wildlife enthusiasts the best opportunity to spot Africa’s extraordinary wildlife species, including its iconic Big 5, in their natural habitat.

The dry conditions and extremely low / minimal – no rainfall experienced during Africa’s dry winter season means that the various ponds, streams, puddles, and smaller water sources within each park, reserve, and conservancy dry up. This forces wildlife to congregate around the remaining large lakes, rivers, and any larger water sources available, ultimately resulting in the concentration of wildlife in and around these particular water sources being at their highest during Africa’s dry season.

Winter in Africa is the best time to go on safari

As the concentration of wildlife congregating around each park or reserve’s larger surrounding water sources continue to increase during Africa’s dry season, it inevitably provides visitors, tourists, and avid wildlife lovers from across the world with spectacular and rewarding game viewing opportunities, including magnificent Big 5 sightings and encounters.

As most animals must drink every day, they don’t stray too far away from the remaining water sources. This is particularly true as it pertains to all water-dependant wildlife, especially herds of elephants, buffalo, and Africa’s full range of predators (lions, leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs, crocodiles, and spotted hyenas). This means you are pretty much guaranteed beyond incredible and up-close sightings of some of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife, including it’s rare, endangered, and widely beloved African wild dog.

The lack of rain during Africa’s dry winter season also means that most of the reserves and park’s vegetation either thins out or dries up entirely . This is great news for you, especially as it pertains to premium wildlife sightings. The resulting sparse vegetation and dry surroundings during winter in Africa ensures optimal visibility , essentially making it much easier to spot any and all of Africa’s Big 5, along with its vast array of other amazing wildlife species.

**BONUS: The sparse vegetation during Africa’s dry winter season is particularly helpful (and a MAJOR bonus) if you’re eager to spot the most mysterious and elusive member of the African Big 5 – the leopard of course – which spend most of their time in trees. However, as the trees thin out and lose their leaves / is less luscious and dense during this time it undoubtedly makes these sleek felines far easier to spot – so get ready for some extraordinary leopard sightings!

Winter in Africa is the best time to go on safari

In addition to spectacular and down-right thrilling wildlife sightings and encounters, the lovely mild day-time temperatures provide visitors with the perfect climate for exploration, discovery, and enjoying an incredible array of safari activities and adventures. It’s the ultimate time to tick some long-awaited wildlife and safari experiences off your bucket-list!

As cool mornings and pleasant afternoons are the order of the day, you can comfortably enjoy extended game drives as well as other exhilarating safari experiences and endeavors, all without melting or freezing – What a win! While, for some tourists and travelers, swapping their northern hemisphere summer for an African winter will feel rather strange at first, don’t worry, you’ll get just as much sunshine on a visit down south!

#Explore Africa’s Vast & Diverse Landscapes

Another great thing about a winter safari in Africa is that it lines up perfectly with the traditional holiday season in the northern hemisphere. For those of you with kids, it means they could have the time of their lives on an African adventure without having to cram everything into a few rushed days. And for those without little ones in tow, it means escaping the crowds and chaos of the ‘typically popular’ European holiday destinations.

#Africa offers a variety of amazing & exciting wildlife & safari experiences & adventures

Winter in Africa is the best time to go on safari

It’s safari time! Everyone should experience an authentic African safari and game drive at least once in their lives. Going on a safari in any of Africa’s premium conservation areas or National Parks not only gives you the opportunity to tick an unforgettable experience off your bucket-list, but enjoy an up-close perspective of Africa’s magnificent wildlife in their natural habitat. To make things even more exciting, you can choose between a vast variety of other amazing safari experiences.

First-off, when it comes to safaris in Africa, you can either opt to go on a  self-drive wildlife adventure  through the African bushveld or enjoy a thrilling  game drive in an open 4×4 vehicle  with an experienced and knowledgeable wildlife guide by your side. Besides the wild and untamed beauty of the African wilderness, going on an action-packed game drive gives wildlife lovers the opportunity to enjoy up-close sightings and encounters of the African Big 5 and several other birdlife and wildlife species, explore off-the-beaten-path routes as your expert guide leads the way, and learn more about the animals, biodiversity, and landscapes.

Winter in Africa is the best time to go on safari

If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, going on a  walking safari  is right up your alley! Exploring the African bushveld on foot encourages you to fully immerse yourself in the experience and enjoy amazing up-close wildlife and birdlife sightings from a whole new perspective. As the guides are highly experienced, exceptionally trained, and incredibly knowledgeable, they are only too happy to share their wealth of knowledge regarding the wildlife, birdlife, and biodiversity of the area with each and every guest.

It doesn’t end there – from thrilling night drives; admiring the beauty of a glorious African sunset over the striking savannah with a glass of champagne or sundowner in hand; reveling in every unbelievable and thrilling second of going on a hot air balloon ride over the majestic plains at sunrise; sleeping out in a tree house or lavish bed under the African stars and waking up to the awe-inspiring scenery at dawn; or simply sitting back, relaxing, and savoring the sounds of the African bush. The choices are truly endless when it comes to going on an authentic and memorable safari holiday during Africa’s winter season.

Winter in Africa is the best time to go on safari

Besides these amazing bucket-list worthy safari experiences, you can also choose to enjoy a variety of other activities and adventures. Some of which include, thrilling river safaris kayaking, fishing, mountain biking, thrilling hiking expeditions, and one-on-one guided safari tours, to mention just a few. You also have the option of an expertly guided and tailor-made private tour, specifically designed to suit your needs. On an African safari holiday, the bush is your personal playground, so be sure to enjoy every single second of it!

#The risk of malaria is at its lowest during Africa’s dry winter season

Nobody likes uninvited guests, especially when it comes to mosquitoes. But here’s the great thing – mosquitoes hate the cold just as much as you do – YAY! The mosquito population shrinks significantly during Africa’s winter season, further reducing the already minor risk of contracting malaria. This gives you the opportunity to enjoy your safari trip without the buzzing nuisance of mosquitoes or any fear or worry you may have about contracting malaria.

#Winter in Africa allows for a more relaxed safari experience

An African safari can be an action-packed experience. However, that often means waking up early to make sure you’re out and about on a game drive when the animals are most active.

So, if you like to sleep in a little later – you are on holiday after all – the African winter may be the best time to visit. Shorter daylight hours and later sunrises allows for more time to snooze, sleep in, and relish in the sweet pleasure of enjoying a leisurely morning in the glorious African bushveld.

This means you will not only feel totally refreshed and rejuvenated, but ready to take on and enjoy all the safari adventures and experiences of the day ahead, including once-in-a-lifetime wildlife sightings and encounters, ticking exciting safari and wildlife adventures and activities off your bucket-list, as well as experiencing everything a true African safari has to offer – all without missing a single African beat – What more could you possibly ask for?

Plus, let’s be honest, even the king of the jungle knows the importance of beauty sleep, so why should you be any different?

Don’t get stuck trying to plan a summer safari – winter in Africa is where the real magic happens! From happy hours at watering holes to animals strutting their stuff against a backdrop of ‘naked’ trees, the African winter is perfect for an unforgettable safari experience.

When deciding what to pack for your safari , the main things to consider are comfort, ease in care, changing temperatures, colors, and your overall style.

Pick clothes that are breathable, neutral and that can adapt to the changing temperatures throughout the day.

They should be easy to hand-wash and quick to dry as well. Cotton is no doubt the best material for your safari outfits, as it also dries in no time.

What Colors Should You Wear or Not In the Wild?

While you can wear any color during a safari, avoid bright colors like yellow, brilliant white and orange as they easily attract insects, and wildlife as well. Prefer neutral tones and if you love white, ivory white or creamy white is a better alternative.

There’s always a risk of your clothes getting dirty during the day, so don’t wear your best and cutest colors.

You’ll be going on drives around the African savannahs, or Moroccan deserts, so not only dress comfortably but choose colors that won’t get stained and show off the dirt.

Wearing colors that hide any dirt while blending in well with your surroundings is a wise idea. Some of the best colors most women love to wear include jungle green, black, and browns.

Level up your safari style by wearing animal prints!

What to Wear on Safari Evenings

Going on a Safari? Try These Stylish Safari Outfit Ideas

Your choice of what to wear on a safari evening will be determined by where you will be dining that evening.

It is recommended to wear clothes that cover your legs and arms if you will be dining outdoors, to keep the cold away.

Bugs like beetles, and moths that are attracted to the abundance of light where you seated outdoors, especially in an area that is generally very dark. Mosquitoes can also be very irritating! Wear clothes that cover you to prevent bites.

Keep the dresses, shorts, skirts and short sleeves away, and go for jeans or long khaki pants, long-sleeved tops, and closed flat shoes.

Also, avoid colors like white and yellow while in such an environment as insects are drawn to such bright colors.

On the flip side, if you’ll be dining indoors, perhaps in a restaurant, then you can wear anything.

What Kind of Shoes Should You Wear On A Safari?

Going on a Safari? Try These Stylish Safari Outfit Ideas

Most safari destinations have no smooth floors, from the wild expeditions to the safari lodges. You want to bring comfortable shoes like boots and keep the high heels away so you can be comfortable walking.

Sneakers, sandals and flat espadrilles are perfect, comfortable and stylish options as well.

Winter’s Here: It’s Perfect Safari Season

Posted by Briony Chisholm on April 25 2017 in African Safaris & Tours Enquire Now!

April is coming rapidly to an end, signally the transition from autumn to winter in the Southern Hemisphere. Days get a bit shorter, temperatures get a bit cooler and in most safari regions the summer rains give way to the dry winter, making the bush sparse and animals gather at whatever water is available.

While in the Game Of Thrones clip above the phrase ‘Winter is Coming’ is edged with foreboding and anxiety, in the safari regions of Southern Africa, it signals prime game watching time. The reasons for this are multiple and we’ll discuss them here.

Comfortable daytime temperatures

Summer temperatures in southern Africa easily reach into the high 30°Cs and into the 40°Cs (90 to 100°F). This can make game drives – other than those in the early mornings and evenings – extremely uncomfortable for anybody who is not used to high temperatures.

Namibian Sun

While the more southern regions, and the desert regions, may be very cold at night in winter – dropping into the single digits – the closer to the equator, the balmier it is mid-winter. Daytime temperatures average in the mid-20°Cs which is the perfect temperature for warm, comfortable game drives and walks.

Average winter temperatures for some of the more popular safari destinations are:

  • Kruger: 24°C/10°C
  • Sossusvlei: 27°C/6°C
  • Etosha: 27°C/6°C
  • Okavango: 26°C/8°C
  • Chobe: 26°C/8°C
  • Vic Falls: 24°C/10°C
  • Mozambique: 25°C/14°C
  • Uganda: 20°C/11°C
  • Ngorongoro: 17°C/6°C
  • Serengeti: 27°C/14°C
  • Masai Mara: 24°C/14°C
  • Zanzibar: 29°C/19°C

Serengeti

Most African safari destinations are summer rainfall regions – especially Kruger – meaning that, during the dry winter, the bush thins out and grass dies down. This allows for much easier, and more plentiful, game spotting as the animals have less to hide behind.

Elephant in Kruger

Many water sources dry up significantly during the winter months which makes the game gather around available sources. Again, this allows for fantastic game viewing.

Lower Malaria Risk

Mosquito Net

Along with the dryness and cooler temperatures, the malaria risk is lower in some regions (like Kruger). Mosquitoes (who carry malaria) thrive in warm climates and need water to breed in, so in areas that are dry and cold in winter, the risk is lower.

See our full blog on Malaria to check which areas are risk areas and for all things malaria.

Family Time

The Safari Collection - Our Footprint

We spoke with The Safari Collection about the conservation, community and sustainability projects they are involved with.

Safari Collection Our Footprint

As part of Far and Wild’s ongoing commitment to champion organisations who actively work towards being sustainable, I spoke with Mark Boyd, The Safari Collection’s Footprint Director to ask about the conservation, community and sustainability projects they are involved with.

The Safari Collection is a well-established and very successful safari company in Kenya who have world-famous properties such as Giraffe Manor , Sasaab, Sala’s Camp and Solio Lodge as part of their portfolio.

Mark has an established career with renowned Safari Collection – starting his journey as the community and conservation manager which entailed fundraising and implementing community and conservation programs throughout Kenya. His role diversified and developed to the Footprint Director and Sustainability Manager for ' Our Footprint ' – the sustainability and community arm of the organisation, who have a long history of creating and supporting a diverse range of conservation, health and education projects across Kenya. It’s through these projects that the they strive to have not only an ecological balance but also living in harmony with the environment whilst having a positive impact on the communities they work alongside.

Q. What initially made the Safari Collection strive to become sustainable and eventually carbon neutral?

The Safari Collection was founded twelve years ago by three directors have always had conservation and a strong community ethos at the core of the company beliefs and over the years it has greatly developed. They’re always looking at ways to innovate, making the company as sustainable as possible ranging from plastic reduction measures, water saving and recycling, migrating to renewable sources of energy such solar power and so forth.

"Sustainability isn’t a destination, it’s a journey which develops year on year with constant improvement and re-evaluation of business practices – not just on a company level but on a personal level also".

Any organisation which claim to be sustainable and care for the environment but is not carbon negative or carbon neutral cannot truly claim to sustainable as they are polluting the planet. This is at the core of why we are striving to be carbon neutral and eventually become carbon negative, over-compensating for the footprint that we create to make up the impact we have already created.

"Rather than working towards being carbon negative – we’re striving to be climate positive. Positive connotations work better at getting the message across rather than negative ones".

Q. By the end of 2020 – The Safari Collection hopes for all of its properties to be climate positive, what were the main difficulties you faced and overcame to make this happen?

The collection of data was tricky to really quantify properly. We can accurately calculate the use of fossil fuels and even staff commuting to and from work, but the food journey calculation is very difficult, as the measures are not in place in Kenya today.

Offsetting carbon is also difficult. Rather than subscribing to international plans to obtain carbon credits (*an explanation about carbon credits is below*). We are trying to go the route of reforestation projects in Kenya, specifically in the environment which we are close to and have connections to. We are working with land owners and having firm contracts in place for it to properly qualify as carbon offsetting. This is probably our biggest issue. We’re trying to revitalise and create habitats for endangered species by planting trees.

There needs to be a change of mindset also, organisations can calculate their carbon footprint and then work out how best to offset this but there needs to be a reduction in emissions as well, there needs to be an ethos of trying not to produce carbon as well as offsetting what is produced.

The cost of ecology efficient the technology is very high, if it was more viable then a lot more organisations would be able to afford to put measures in place. For example, the cost of converting a safari vehicle to electric is over USD $50k – if you have a fleet of 20 safari vehicles, that soon becomes a cost which not many organisations can afford. The cost of technology is slowly coming down all the time so there’s hope.

*Carbon credits explained - A carbon credit is a permit which is issued by an international auditing body, it allows the holding company to emit a certain amount of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gasses by offsetting their carbon footprint by either the planting of trees or investing in to environmental projects to balance out their carbon footprint.*

Q. Small measure can make a big difference, what was the most ingenious, out of the box initiative that has been put in place?

Across the company we have an annual stipulation for every member of staff to complete one act of sustainability or kindness, this is agreed in their annual review and what it will be. It could be anything from creating a tree planting program in their community or taking clothes to a local orphanage. It’s a great initiative because it means that everyone in the company is doing at least one good thing a year – many people go over and above this. It ties people into the company’s ethos, spreading the conservation and community mindset through every level of the company. It’s designed to drive an understanding that it’s everyone’s responsibility to be more sustainably minded.

Q. Do you have any other initiatives which are currently being explored?

Yes – We’re looking at ways in which our guests can join us in a completely climate positive safari experience. We already offset the entire company operations and we’d like to invite our guest to offset their safari too, meaning it’s offset twice. We’re also looking at ways in which international and internal flights can be offset.

Q. Through The Safari Collections Footprint education programs aimed at both children and adults – how important is it to educate and empower younger minds about the importance of living sustainably?

One word. Huge. One of the good things is that the average Kenyan already lives a much more sustainable life than the average westerner so that’s a great start. The bigger issue is addressing human/wildlife conflict. We take a lot of children on safari each year, this helps us show them wildlife in a positive light rather than having a negative mindset especially with communities living on the fringes of conservation areas where elephants might raid crops or predators take their livestock.

We run a scholarship program and as part of that we take scholars away for a week long annual educational retreat to inspire them to go on to work in conservation, wildlife management fields. It’s getting the message of human/wildlife coexistence across and sharing resources.

Q. What has been the one stand-out, breakthrough success across all of the Safari Collection’s Our Footprint movement which you have been most proud of?

Probably watching the development of our conservation scholars grow, especially when they come from very traditional tribal societies. The program is designed to inspire scholars to continue their education overcoming the temptation to drop out, it’s a pipeline to helping talented and dedicated individuals, encouraging them to become wildlife warriors, conservation heroes and go on to study at university becoming the next generation of custodians protecting and looking after their wildlife heritage. One day, I hope one of these scholars will eventually replace me – now that would be a phenomenal success. A talented local student going through the scholarship program, on to university and then to educate others to live more sustainably. Imagine that.

Q. Are there other ways in which carbon footprints can be offset besides the planting of trees?

Yes – in fact one was conceived right here in Kenya called the REDD+ Carbon Project. In short, it’s protecting forested areas from being destroyed by making it more valuable alive than being chopped down for logging or agriculture. This is done through revenue streams paid directly to the communities living close by.

The project works quite simply; the amount of carbon stored within a forest is calculated and audited by the appropriate agencies and carbon credits are issued – these carbon credits can then be traded or sold – therefore making the forested area an investment to keep alive by the communities. The forests are continuously monitored to make sure that their status remains the same.

(You can read more about the REDD+ project here)

Redd

REDD+ stands for countries' efforts to R educe E missions from D eforestation and forest D egradation, and foster conservation, sustainable management of forests, and enhancement of forest carbon stocks.

Deforestation and forest degradation are responsible for around 15% of global greenhouse gas emissions, which is the second leading cause of greenhouse gas emissions after the transportation industry.

REDD+ projects are aimed at ensuring forested areas are protected - this has a quicker and greater impact than reforestation and other replanting initiatives.

Q. What three pieces of advice would you give any organisation who is unsure how to become more sustainable but wanting to start?

Start and aim to become climate positive right now. Even the small things make a difference, swapping from plastic water bottles to metal. Look how to start offsetting your carbon footprint and reducing your carbon emissions.

Get everyone in the organisation involved, right from the bottom to the very top. Ingrain the mentality of understanding why changes are being made not just what changes are being made and why they are important.

Apply for accreditation, join a scheme - whether it’s on a national or international level. They provide a really good structure to help lodges improve their sustainability. They have criteria which needs to be met, they provide assessments and they help show the way forward. These schemes have certainly helped the Safari Collection as an organisation to become more sustainable.

We’re finding that more and more of our clients are becoming interested in how their choice of travel destination impacts the environment. By choosing a travel company which has genuine sustainable credentials – in doing so, travellers are individually also having a positive impact on the environment.

Travel and safari companies throughout Africa have always had a mindset of sharing the natural world around them with wildlife, coexisting with as minimal an impact as possible. Yes, some organisations are better equipped than others but through the Far and Wild Sustainability Project, we want to share as many good news stories as possible – it’s about helping those who want to become more sustainable and connecting them with others who can share their experience.

Whether you’re a client wanting to travel more sustainably or a safari organisation looking to reduce your carbon footprint and become climate positive, get in touch, we’d love to share some good news stories, telling you about some of the amazing projects our suppliers are involved with to make sure that the planet remains a beautiful place for our children’s’ children and so on…
