Briefly About Karwendel Nature Park

The Karwendel mountain range is the largest in the Northern Limestone Alps. Most of it is in Tyrol Austria – conveniently just north of Innsbruck. The northern parts of the mountain range are in Bavaria, Germany – south

Karwendel Nature Park is one of the oldest nature reserves in Europe, having been preserved since 1928. It covers almost the entire Karwendel mountains range and is 727 square kilometers (~280 square miles) in area. It is beautiful, wild and has an amazingly remote feeling to it despite being right in the middle of civilization.

Getting to Karwendel

The Karwendel Nature Park is basically surrounded by civilization which makes it easy to get to by trains and other means of transport. Main points of entry would be Innsbruck, the Seefeld Olympic region to the west, and the Achensee region to the East. All accessible by public transport.

Read the first part of this story for more info on Karwendel and how to get there. For airports suggestions read the 5 Best Airports to Reach the Alps and why I think Munich is a great airport to reach Tyrol (and Karwendel), especially if flying in overseas.

Day 2: Karwendehaus to Hallerangerhaus

Morning at karwendelhaus.

After an exceptionally beautiful sunset and an evening of fun on the outdoors terrace of Karwendelhaus, we woke up to the typical hustle and bustle of a mountain hut dormitory.

The morning brought along more sunshine. We were looking forward to a tough but enjoyable day first climbing up to Birkkarspitze, the highest peak in the Karwendel mountain range. From Birkkarspitze the trail would take us down to Hinterautal and then back up the ither side of the valley to Hallerangerhaus. We enjoyed a very typical hut breakfast and bought some lunch-to-go from the hut.

As always, the morning in a mountain hut was a hassle with everybody trying to be quickly on their way. Everybody at the same time, of course. After breakfast and gathering up our gear we filled our water bottles double checked our belonging and were on our way.

Tough Going

Since the weather and visibility was good, we could observe groups of people going up before us. Some were visibly struggling and along the way up we passed quite a few.

We, too, needed to take frequent breaks. I couldn’t help thinking the last drink on the terrace the night before might have been unnecessary. A lot of water was consumed and I’m sure my body was cleansed with all the sweating… Nevertheless, we were in high spirits – this was what we had come here for!

Karwendel is known for its plentiful flora an fauna and sure enough – we got to see a few Ibex on the way up! Too bad I didn’t have a proper zoom lens on my camera and was only able to capture the animals running away from us.

Once on top, we had some lunch. The view was spectacular to both sides of the mountain – it is one of the highest peaks in the area, after all. The actual peak of Birkkarspitze is a little to the side from the trail. When we got close, it was packed full of people.

Since we had spent more time than expected ascending, we decided to just continue down south towards Hinterautal.

Image Alternative Text

Down to Hinterautal

Hinterautal is where the river Isar begins. The Isar flows down through the valleys and gains more water until it eventually reaches Munich and then later ends up feeding into the Danube, one of Europe’s major rivers.

The vertical ascent from Karwendelhaus to Birkkarspitze was just shy of a full kilometer. The descent down to Hinterautal is about 1,4 kilometers. That’s a big drop. Climbing up was brutal but going down the full length was even more so.

As going up, the trail down was difficult with lots of loose rocks and steep portions. The upper part is partially secured by cables to help with some of the steepest parts. This is not something you would need Via Ferrata gear for but in some spots, it was good to be able to get some additional support.

Image Alternative Text

Below the cabled portions came a huge, steep area of loose rocks. I would have been in trouble without my hiking poles to take some of the load off my knees. They also helped with balance with the loose rocks crumbling away under my soles.

Once past the rocky terrain and lower down the slope, we started eventually encountering some vegetation. The trail became less steep and easier to follow. Eventually we were walking within a forest.

After the difficult parts, the distance to the valley was still considerable. Even though it was easier to proceed, it still took a long time to get all the way down. After the 1,4 kilometers (or roughly 4,500 feet) of descent, our feet had taken a beating.

Break at Kastenalm

Down in the valley it was nice and calm – and flat, for a change. After the huge descent walking on flat ground felt strange. We needed a break.

We encountered the road that goes the entire length of Hinterautal, all the way down to Scharnitz. It was like the one that we walked up to Karwendelhaus the day before. A little bit down the road is the Isar Source, where the Isar river begins.

We followed the road east to Kastenalm for a deserved break and some lunch.

At Kastenalm we encountered plenty of cows, fellow hikers and mountain bikers. Like Karwendelhaus, Kastenalm also seems to be a popular destination for mountain bikers. I guess you could do a day trip there and back from Scharnitz easily.

Lunch was just cold cuts and cold drinks. Apparently, there are no restaurant facilities which is understandable: the place is very remote, tucked away at the end of the valley and it is not open in the winter.

After our break we started walking uphill again towards Hallerangerhaus.

Summing it Up & Recommendations

What a day it was!

The Eagle Walk website says this walk take 8,5 hours but I think we spent closer to 10. I don’t think we slacked off at any point and all the breaks we took were needed. This really was a tough day and I would not recommend it unless you are experienced with black rated Alpine trails.

In my opinion there was nothing out of the ordinary, not any exceptionally difficult parts – for a black trail. However, this really was long and strenuous, at least for my condition that day.

I would be cautious going on this trail in bad weather or poor visibility. I would also recommend making sure you have plenty of water with you and enough to eat. It’s a long way before you reach Kastenalm. If you’re going the other way, it’s a long way to Karwendelhaus.

Bike & Hike Adventure Karwendelhaus - Birkkarspitze

The highest peak in the Karwendel Mountains, the Birkkarspitze (2,749 metres), is the destination of this bike & hike. It is pre-destined for a combination of cycling and walking thanks to the long approach from Scharnitz. Even with the aid of two wheels, there are still more than 1,800 vertical metres of ascent from bottom to top. It is therefore only recommended for those with good fitness levels. After the long approach by bike through the Karwendeltal Valley there is time for a stop and a rest at the Karwendelhaus before things get steeper on the hike section. Towards the end of the hike there is even a bit of easy climbing and scrambling required. The reward for all that hard work is a fabulous panorama taking in not only the Hohe Tauern Mountains and the Ötztal Alps but also the alpine foothills over the German border in Bavaria.

Hike (difficult) Hiking time: 5 h 30 min Distance: 6.2 km Vertical ascent: 972 vertical metres

The long ascent to the Birkkarspitze begins at the "Länd" car park in Scharnitz. Turn left and cross the Isar river, then turn right and shortly afterwards take the road on the left into the Karwendeltal Valley (Karwendelhaus, E4). The valley welcomes riders with a short but steep climb before flattening off for most of the remaining eight kilometres to the Larchetalm hut (no food & drink served). From the hut the trail becomes steeper in places, with a final series of steep corners leading up to the Karwendelhaus (1,771 metres). Stop there for a rest before embarking on the second and more difficult stage of the adventure: the hike.

Behind the Karwendelhaus hut, take trail number 225 towards the Birkkarspitze mountain to the south-east. The steep path leads through a series of avalanche barriers, with a steel rope in sections for safety, then through larchwood forest and, after the turning to the "Brendelsteig" into the Schlauchkar and up onto the ridge. In early spring and late autumn there may be patches of snow here. After the steep and energy-sapping climb to the Schlauchkarsattel ridge, where hikers will find a small bivouac hut, the trail turns left for the final push to the top. There are a number of sections with a steel rope for safety. Hikers should be sure-footed and have a good head for heights. However, the fabulous views are a fine reward for all that hard work.

Return the way you came. Please be careful near the top of the Birkkarspitze due to the very steep slopes.

Birkkarspitze (2749 m)

Bergtour | karwendel | scharnitz 800+1000 hm | insg. 12:30 std.

Technisch eher einfache, jedoch ziemlich alpine Bergtour (S4).

Alps Scenic Hikes - Bike and Hike to Birkkarspitz and to the Ödkarspitzen

The Birkkarspitze is a classic in the Karwendel. As a round tour with the three Ödkarspitzen and with Bike and Hike, it makes a great weekend tour with an overnight stay at the Karwendelhaus.

The tour starts in Scharnitz. There is a large parking lot near the Naturpark info center. If you start the tour only in the afternoon, the parking lot can be relatively full.

Hike and Bike Tour

On the first day of the tour, we cycle from Scharnitz to the Karwendelhaus. The next day, the tour goes via the Brendelsteig up to the three Ödkarspitzen and the Birkkarspitze. Via the Schlauchkar the hike leads back to the Karwendelhaus. Now comes the best part of the tour with the bike downhill back to Scharnitz. As a pure hiking tour, at least three days must be planned, as the ascent and descent to and from the Karwendelhaus take considerably longer.

Tag 1: Scharnitz - Karwendelhaus

Our tour starts at the parking lot in Scharnitz. We have decided to do the tour as a bike and hike. The advantage is that the very long climb through the Karwendel valley can be shortened to a small mountain bike tour of about 2-3 hours. For the tour as a pure hike on the second day after the long mountain tour on Birkkarspitz and Ödkarspitzen still a long descent through the Karwendel valley must be mastered. This can be done comfortably by bike downhill without much effort.

The mountain bike tour to the Karwendelhaus is easy and leads via a forest road in about 2 to 3 hours to our first destination of the day, the Karwendelhaus. The first part of the trail is a bit steeper, first on a tarred road past some houses and then on a forest road uphill through the forest. After a short time you reach a small viewpoint with a view into the gorge where the Karwendelbach flows deep below. Further up, the forest thins out a bit and the path becomes flatter and now leads through the Karwendel valley along the Karwendel stream. Here the view of the surrounding Karwendel peaks opens up. Relatively flat with only a few short steep climbs, the beautiful path leads to the end of the valley floor. From here you can already see the Karwendelhaus from which we now still separate a few meters of altitude. Now it gets significantly steeper. In some serpentines the forest road leads through the forest further uphill. This is probably the most strenuous part of the day. Further up, some curves open up the first views over the valley. At the top there are already some bicycles lined up on the rock. We put ours to it and first get us a piece of cake.

Tag 2: Ödkarspitzen and Birkkarspitze - Scharnitz

The hiking trail starts directly at the Karwendelhaus and leads uphill over a short, steeper rocky passage. Between the mountain pines it goes in the direction of Ödkarspitzen and Birkkarspitze, which can soon be seen from the hiking trail. After a short time we reach the junction where we have to decide in which direction the round trip should go. We have decided after recommendation of the hut host to make the tour clockwise, that is, we start via the Brendelsteig and take the descent over the scree field in the Schlauchkar. So we follow the path to the right. Over the Brendelsteig it goes at the foot of the Ödkarspitzen at the beginning easily and after a short time increasingly steep uphill. A first great distant view opens up when you reach the ridge. It is worth a short break for first photos with a view of the Karwendel valley.

Here you meet the Toni Gaugg high trail, which continues towards Seekarlspitze. However, we turn left and follow the signpost to the Ödkarspitzen. From now on, the trail leads increasingly uphill over stony scree terrain. After about an hour you reach the first peak of the day, the western Ödkarspitze. The view is already very beautiful from here with a deep view into the Karwendel valley and Isar valley to the opposite Karwendel peaks Praxmarerkarspitze and Kaskarspitze . The further path leads with panoramic views and only a slight incline further to the Mittlere Ödkarspitze, the highest of the three Ödkarspitz peaks. Here it is worthwhile to take a short break with a view of our next destinations eastern Ödkarspitze and Birkkarspitze. Up to the eastern Ödkarspitze the path leads first downhill. From there, our last peak, the Birkkarspitze, presents itself directly opposite.

A steep trail, secured in short passages with wire rope, leads from the eastern Ödkarspitze down to a saddle. Here you have to pay attention to the trail markings in order not to get off the trail in the steep terrain. Arrived at the saddle, the ascent is as steep as the descent. Here, too, there are individual passages where you have to scramble a bit. After about half an hour we stand on our last summit and actually the goal of the day, the Birkkarspitze. From here, the view opens up further to the west and over the Schlauchkar in the direction of the Karwendelhaus. Here we take a well-deserved summit snack before we start our descent.

Down we go first on the same way as up back to the saddle. After this first steep descent, our path now leads through the Schlauchkar down to the Karwendelhaus. First over a steep then flattening scree field, the path stretches until you reach the height of the Mountain pines again. After one or two hours, you meet the turnoff towards Brendelsteig from this morning. Now it is not far to return to the Karwendelhaus via the already known path. Those who make it back before four o’clock can now treat themselves to a Kaiserschmarrn at the hut.

The fastest part of the tour now follows on the descent by mountain bike. Through the Karwendel valley, always downhill, the forest road from the previous day leads us back to Scharnitz at a rapid pace.

The Assumption Belfry and Ivan the Great Bell Tower

The Assumption Belfry and Ivan the Great Bell Tower

View from a corner of Assumption Cathedral on the architectural ensemble of the Assumption Belfry (at the left) and Ivan the Great Bell Tower (at the right) built in the Moscow Kremlin in 16th century. The tower’s name implies that it had once housed St. John’s Church, and that it used to be the tallest building in Moscow (height with cross is about 80 m). For many decades the bell tower was also the main watchtower in the Kremlin, and later also a fire tower. Petrok Maliy, the Italian architect who built the Kitai-Gorod wall in Moscow, started the construction of the church of the Resurrection, later renamed Church of the Nativity, next to the Ivan the Great Tower in 1532. Decades later was converted to a four-tier belfry for large bells, known today as the Assumption Belfry after its main 64-ton bell placed in the middle of the fourth tier. The Assumption bell tolled only on great holidays and to announce events of exceptional significance.

Best of Moscow by high speed train

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

Basil, etc.

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.
