Yo-Yo Ma (born October 7th, 1955) is a French-American cellist. He was born in Paris to Chinese parents, and grew up in New York City.
Ma was a child prodigy, and began performing with his instrument at the age of five. He’s now arguably the most famous cello player on the planet. He first appeared on American television at the age of eight, and went onto graduate from both the prestigious Juilliard School - one of the world’s most prestigious music schools - and, later, Harvard University. over the course of a sparkling career, he’s recorded no fewer than seventy-five albums, and has garnered fifteen Grammy Awards in that time, too.
Ma has been involved with several high-profile film soundtracks, too, including Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Seven Years in Tibet and Once Upon a Time in America. He performed ‘Air and Simple Gifts’, a John Williams composition, at the inauguration ceremony of President Barack Obama in January 2009, cementing his status of something of a national institution in America, in musical terms. He was a friend of the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs, and would often perform at press events for the tech company at Jobs’ request. He continues to have a huge influence on American culture, and won the inaugural Fred Rogers Legacy Award in 2014, which he called “perhaps the greatest honor I’ve ever received.”
Live reviews
Yo-Yo Ma is one of a kind. There is no one who can quite reach the standard of musical ability and technique that Yo-Yo Ma has achieved. To hear his bow strum across the strings of his cello and create that deep resonance that sinks right into out hearts is phenomenal to see in a live setting.
When Yo-Yo Ma walks on the stage everyone is silent and eyes are fixated on him and ears are attentively engrossed in the music. Yo-Yo Ma seems to sell out his shows every time he comes through town and there is a good reason that he does. He is one of the best cello players in the world and his musical repertoire is vast and diverse. Yo-Yo Ma is a master at playing the great classical pieces and Bach’s beloved Baroque pieces, but he also is well versed at playing jazz, blue grass, and Chinese traditional music.
With Yo-Yo Ma being one of the best cello players in the world it makes sense that he would be playing one of the best cellos. He plays a 2.5 million dollar cello that was built in 1733 by the well regarded, Domenico Montagnana. With this cello Yo-Yo Ma is able to get a deep, warm tone that sounds incredible live. When attending a Yo-Yo Ma concert you can be sure you are going to get a diverse setlist. Yo-Yo Ma has an incredibly large catalog of music to play from having already released 75 albums.
Yo-Yo Ma is guaranteed to be an absolute treat to see live. If his 15 Grammy awards isn’t reason enough to convince you to go see him, then I don’t know what is. Yo-Yo Ma is already regarded as a legendary performer and if you get a chance to see him live you should definitely jump on the opportunity.
Report as inappropriate
I had to spend my Friday night watching one of the world’d best cello players recite poetry! This event was incredibly misleading as it was not well advertised as a “conversation” rather than a musical concert. There was no cello insight. Yes I should have read the fine print, but why the hell is there a post on Songkick for a conversation?

Yo-Yo Ma An Evening with Yo-Yo Ma
Skip slideshow, jump to main content.
The incomparable Yo-Yo Ma returns to Austin for the first time in over a decade for a transcendent evening of music and words. In this one night-only performance, the world-renowned cellist performs a special selection of his favorite pieces and shares stories about a life dedicated to music.
Yo-Yo Ma’s career is testament to his faith in culture’s ability to generate trust and understanding — from the global collective Silkroad to the Bach Project and, most recently, Our Common Nature, a cultural journey to celebrate the ways that nature can reunite us in pursuit of a shared future. Yo-Yo was born to Chinese parents in Paris, where he began to study the cello with his father when he was four. Three years later, he moved with his family to the United States, where he continued his cello studies before pursuing a liberal arts education.

About the Artists
Extraordinary cellist and beloved music ambassador Yo-Yo Ma returns to the Kennedy Center for a lively Concert Hall recital with longtime musical partner, British pianist Kathryn Stott. For more than 30 years, the duo has “...developed a wonderfully warm and mutually responsive musical partnership that has blossomed in performances that are both generous and incisive” (NPR).
The evening’s repertoire includes Dvořák’s tender and reflective Songs My Mother Taught Me , Arvo Pärt’s exquisite and haunting Spiegel im Spiegel , Brazilian composer Sergio Assad’s Menino , Fauré’s fleeting "Papillon" ("Butterfly"), Shostakovich’s eminently lyrical Cello Sonata in D Minor, and more.
Ma and Stott share a notable interpretative equality, as heard on numerous albums, including their 2020 Songs of Comfort and Hope in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The pair have traveled the globe together and as individual artists, performing in venues spanning the world’s finest concert halls and everywhere in between. They have been longtime friends of Washington Performing Arts and it is a pleasure to welcome them back for their first duo concert with us since 2010.

Program Notes
With an astonishing 25 GRAMMY® Awards (out of a staggering 73 nominations) and five Oscars, John Williams is one of the most prolific and beloved film composers of all time, with unforgettable scores including Jaws ; Close Encounters of the Third Kind ; the Star Wars , Indiana Jones , and Harry Potter films; Schindler’s List, and dozens more. But his talents go far beyond the movies.
In this one-night-only performance, Williams conducts a moving, memory-stirring selection of music from his films, and welcomes his long-time friend and 19-time GRAMMY winner Yo-Yo Ma for a performance of his Cello Concerto.
The Concerto transports the listener, from its opening theme “as effective an introduction to a character as the first five minutes of any Spielberg film” ( The Washington Post ) to its lyrical, poignant finale. It’s a rare opportunity to hear two towering artists who have shaped much of the musical world of the past half-century, on stage together in a joyful reunion!
