What’s the Difference Between NOLS, Outward Bound, and Other Outdoor Programs?

As an accredited outdoor and adventure education provider, we here at The National Center for Outdoor & Adventure Education (NCOAE) know that people are diligently doing their homework in their search to find the best guided wilderness trips for their children or for themselves.

And topping their list of questions is this query: What makes NCOAE different from programs like Outward Bound, programs like NOLS, and even traditional summer camps? How do you make a well-informed choice between our outdoor education company’s offerings and those offered by a summer camp, tour operator, GAP semester provider, or an unaccredited outdoor adventure programming company?

Many organizations like ours seek to set themselves apart from the top two standard bearers, namely, The National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) and Outward Bound (OB). Truth be told, NCOAE’s similarities to those organizations far surpass our differences. In fact, like so many other organizations, we trace our pedigree back to programs like Outward Bound and NOLS.

NOLS and OB are leaders in the field, and for very good reason. They’ve been around longer than most every other outdoor education and adventure programming organization out there. Both brands are highly recognizable and trusted, and each has trained hundreds of thousands of people — many of whom have gone on to found outdoor recreation companies of their own.

In addition, these two organizations play leading roles within the outdoor education industry, from convening the annual Wilderness Risk Management Conference each fall to publishing industry-leading research. They’re also refreshingly upfront and transparent about reporting their in-field near misses and fatalities.

We share that transparency with both organizations, including other attributes, such as accreditation by the Association for Experiential Education (AEE). And like NOLS and OB, we have our own curriculum. We hire, train, and retain only the best instructors; we place an emphasis on our staff’s professional development and continuing education; we participate in annual in-person industry educational and networking events; we offer courses in unique and challenging destinations; and we have our own policies and guidelines according to how and where we operate.

But rather than comparing and contrasting ourselves to organizations like NOLS and Outward Bound, we think it’s most helpful for prospective students and their parents to compare what we offer to other options, such as:

• Residential summer camps
• Tour operators
• GAP programs
• Semester programs
• Urban summer programs
• Other outdoor and adventure-based schools

What we’d like to do in the sections that follow is outline what sets NCOAE apart from other forms of experiences that you or your child may be considering, starting with residential summer camps.

Residential Summer Camps Residential summer camps are supervised by professional adults, college students, and counselors in training (CITs) to foster personal growth for children by providing them with fun educational and recreational programs in a safe environment.

Residential summer camps generally share the following characteristics:

• Living units of 12–50 students, often divided into smaller groups for specific activities
• A wide array of activities such as arts & crafts, sports, outdoor activities, and environmental pursuits
• Opportunities for students to try new things and be somewhat in charge of new responsibilities, such as cleaning the bathhouse
• Limited backcountry activities in which campers have the option, but not the obligation, to participate
• Meals mostly prepared by camp kitchen staff and served in the dining hall with limited opportunities for campers to cook meals for themselves and their campmates
• Centralized lodging, meals, and bathhouse facilities
• Routine environment and activities coordinated from a central home base

NCOAE programs offer outdoor and adventure education experiences that promote personal growth the acquisition of technical outdoor skills, and stewardship in communities and in nature. Our outdoor and experiential education programs are characterized by the following:

• Small groups with a 1:6 instructor-to-student ratio
• Programs for individuals, school groups, university groups, nonprofit groups, and others
• Outcome-focused curriculum
• Activities chosen carefully to optimize experiential education outcomes
• Opportunities to try new things and develop higher levels of responsibility and leadership
• Backcountry meal prep with participants largely in charge of meal preparation
• Group participation in most activities, followed by expertly facilitated end-of-day discussions about what was experienced and learned
• Wilderness environment — most activities/adventures are conducted on unique wilderness land and water wilderness environments
• Backpacking — participants working together, participants carry everything they need to live in the backcountry
• Smaller, more cohesive groups that enable instructors and guides to support the development of the group dynamic more effectively

Tour Operators Tour operators focus on delivering fun recreational activities that may also be, tangentially, educational. They often share the following characteristics:

• A specific activity or package of activities, such as kayaking, whitewater rafting, or bird watching
• An emphasis on fun and recreation
• Limited education focused on a narrow skill set such as paddle techniques, water safety, local flora and fauna, or local/regional history
• Highly regimented — participants follow instructions with little so no opportunity to take on leadership roles
• Full-service guided tours in which participants primarily play a passive role, mostly as sightseers

NCOAE’s outdoor and adventure education experiences are designed so students may be fully engaged. In contrast to a tour guide experience, participants can look forward to the following:

• A custom array of educational and recreational opportunities, with human-powered outdoor recreation activity serving as the vehicle used to drive personal growth, group dynamics, and leadership development
• Active engagement in a range of educational lessons/activities, focused on technical skill development, leadership development, and environmental sciences
• Opportunities for students to learn and grow — and then lead
• Experiential education for developing the technical outdoor skills to live comfortably and safely in the backcountry
• A highly customized personal, interpersonal, and leadership development curriculum

Gap and Semester Programs Gap and semester programs are generally travel educational experiences that students take as a break from more formal classroom studies — usually before enrolling in a college, university, or trade school. These programs are generally characterized by the following:

• International travel
• Duration of three to six months
• High-school, college, and adult offerings
• Cultural and foreign language immersion opportunities
• Limited backcountry experiences (not part of most gap and semester programs)
• Remote locations for some programs

In contrast, NCOAE’s outdoor and adventure education experiences involve both domestic and international travel — mostly in a backcountry environment:

• Domestic and international travel; for example, from New Hampshire to Oregon to Ecuador
• Shorter duration — 42-day and 60-day programs
• Travel that is split into different legs/segments
• Cultural immersion opportunities
• Backcountry activities
• NCOAE’s core experiential learning and personal, interpersonal, and leadership development curriculum
• Course offerings tailored to domestic and international locations
• Programming for 18-plus aged participants exclusively

Urban Summer Programs & Day Camps Urban summer programs are typically day camps for keeping young children physically and mentally active and engaged with one another in a community setting when they are not in school or home from a break in their community’s academic offerings. Characteristics of urban summer programs include the following:

• Mostly day camp programming
• Primarily based in urban areas
• Broad array of activities such as dance, sports, skateboarding, and crafts
• Supplemental outdoor activities such as archery and pool activities
• Less defined curriculum
• Local community input on program design
• Short trips to natural environments, but primarily focused on activities/experiences in urban settings

NCOAE’s outdoor education and adventure experiences are uniquely different. We offer:

• Primarily outdoor-based programs with limited time in any urban settings
• Primarily overnight, multi-day programming with limited (if any) day programs
• Backcountry wilderness environments
• Development of technical outdoor skills
• Personal, interpersonal, and leadership development curriculum in small-group settings in a wilderness environment to improve group dynamics and an understanding and appreciation of one’s individual and collective impact in a community

Other Outdoor and Adventure-Based Schools Many providers of outdoor education and adventure programming are more limited in scope than we are and less flexible in their programming:

• Focus primarily on outdoor skill development
• Less focus on personal and interpersonal reflection and growth and on leadership development
• Inability to customize programming
• Limited to a few course areas and unable to roll out new ones to address changes in student needs and demands
• Limited flexibility to pivot in response to client or staff feedback when warranted
• More focus on allowing the environment and the physical experience of an expedition dictate the individual student’s learning and experience
• Unaccredited by the Association for Experiential Education (AEE)

• A well-rounded experience, with time for learning and challenge but also for relaxation and reflection, enabling participants to generalize and internalize so they can apply their learning when they return to their home or school communities

“It's a Pilot Trip”—Hiking in Croatia Trip Report

NOLS has been exploring the coasts and islands of Croatia since 2013 by sailboat and kayak but before this June, we had never ventured far inland. In early June, six NOLS Alumni, two NOLS Instructors, and one incredible local partner set forth on NOLS’ first hiking trip in Croatia , and it was outstanding.

The trip had been conceived many years prior but due to logistical restraints and the pandemic it had been delayed and delayed. Finally coming together it blended 3 different national parks, 5 backcountry huts, miles of hiking, and a bit of beach time together to generate NOLS Alumni’s newest adventure.

The best motto for this trip was “it is a pilot trip”. The whole group demonstrated great patience and tolerance as we worked through understanding what we had gotten them into. From gear list misses to mileage and elevation miscalculations there were plenty of things that didn’t go as planned, “it was a pilot trip”.

Starting in Croatia’s capital of Zagreb the trip gathered as a team for the first time and started to talk about the coming days. We didn’t entirely know what to expect because while we had scouted part of the route, we didn’t know all of it. Our local partner Tomislav had hiked every inch of the trail in preparation, but we all had different frames of reference to draw upon.

The first 4 days of the trip were magical. We moved through the Northern Velebit and into the central section. Our trail took us along Karst limestone ridges towering over the Adriatic coastline below us. We stared out into the sea and gazed on the islands sprawling out in front of us. New wildflowers greeted us at every bend in the trail and we had enough clouds to keep us cool but enough sun to keep us happy. Croatia was showing off.

Arriving at our first string of huts we learned a lot. Rustic in some ways, very comfortable in others, each one was a bit different. Other hikers were consistently surprised to see a group of Americans, remarking that “most Croatians don’t even know about this area!”. While the food was basic, we had no lack of volume and learned a lot about mountain cuisine in Croatia. We were all definitely missing salad!

We wrapped up the first segment of the trip with a visit to a family owned organic cheese and milk dairy. Learning about the small farming industry of the area from the owner was a trip highlight and sampling the cheeses, butter, and yogurt were a huge bonus. This was a lovely prelude to an afternoon in a coastal village accompanied by beach sitting and sea swimming before hitting the trail again.

Next up was Paklenica National Park in the southern Velebit region. This park was much more popular and the entrance was busy with rock climbers dangling from some of Croatia’s best rock climbing. We spent the next few days exploring this park from a backcountry hut basecamp and it certainly held up to the high standards of one of Croatia’s best parks.

Leaving Paklenica was bittersweet as we were continuing on into an even busier tourist destination. Plitvice Lakes National Park was our next stop, the most popular, and oldest, national park in Croatia that attracts over 1 million visitors each year. We weren’t excited about the crows, but simply could not skip one of Croatia’s national treasures.

The Plitvice Lakes were formed by the gradual erosion and redepositing of the chalk found in karst limestone. Many conditions had to align 12-15,000 years ago to start this process and the lakes are ever shifting. It is an amazing park to visit.

After Plitvice Lakes, our team journeyed back to Zagreb together, quietly staring out the windows of our bus reflecting on our time in the mountains and our future plans. We shared a final dinner together, enjoyed some reflective laughs, and said goodbye to our team. “It was a pilot trip” and we learned a lot together.

• Day 2: Cathedral of Christ the Savior, the former Krasny Oktyabr factory on Balchug Island, Gorky Park, Moscow State University (one of the Seven Sisters buildings ) and Sparrow Hill

As 2 days os really short, be sure to choose an accommodation in the best districts where to stay in Moscow .

Walking on Red Square in Moscow: one of the unmissable things to do in Moscow

Iconic place and one of the must-see places in Moscow and even in Russia! Besides, if there was only one place to visit in Moscow in 2 days, this place would then be Red Square, without hesitation. Therefore, starting the city tour with Red Square is ideal . Several buildings are on the square, but not all of them have to be visited. Visiting Saint-Basil’s Cathedral inside

Even more emblematic than Moscow’s Red Square! Built in the middle of the 16th century under the orders of Tsar Ivan Le Terrible, this cathedral is one of the most beautiful monuments of Orthodox art, and definitely one of the unmissable places in Moscow. Take a walk in Zariadye park: one of the coolest things to do in Moscow after visiting Red Square

Zaryadie Park is just a 10-minute walk from St. Basil’s Cathedral, so it’s easy to include in your itinerary if you’re going to visit Moscow in 2 days. From its heights, you can see the red walls of the Kremlin. But, the most impressive point of view is the platform which overlooks the Moskva river. A must see! And clearly one of the coolest things to do in Moscow!

Visit the Moscow Kremlin

Visit Kremlin is on top of things to do in Moscow. A place of power for centuries, the Kremlin then shows us a whole different image when viewed from the inside. If you want to visit Moscow in 2 days, the Kremlin is certainly one of the must-see places in Moscow.

Visit the Cathedral of Christ the Savior

This impressive Moscow Cathedral is the seat of the Russian Orthodox Church. It is a must see if you visit Moscow in 2 days and clearly one of the things to do in Moscow. The Cathedral of Christ the Savior was first built in 1883 in memory of Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s Grand Army. Then in 1931 Stalin ordered its destruction. It was then rebuilt again (identically) only in 2000.

• Where? Ulitsa Volkhonka 15. At the foot of the Kropotkinskaya metro station.
• Opening hours . Daily: 10: 00-17: 00, except Monday: 13: 00-17: 00
• Free entry (some closing restrictions, for example a short)

Good to know! In orthodox religious places, one must avoid excessively uncovered clothing. Women should cover their heads. After visiting the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, you can explore Bolotny Island and Gorky Park. This is one of the routes our guide to Moscow.

The old Krasny Oktyabr factory: one of the coolest things to do in Moscow

If you cross the Moskva River by a pedestrian bridge which is located just in front of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, you will enjoy a beautiful view of the city and at the same time you can discover Balchug Island. Furthermore, if you want to visit Moscow in 2 days, you can include this island in your itinerary between the cathedral and Gorky park. Here is the old confectionery factory Krasny Oktyabr, which has gradually turned into a fashionable micro-district. There are then some elements of street art, cafes and restaurants and some Moscow bohemian side. At the end of the island you can see a gigantic 98-meter-high monument dedicated to the Russian reforming tsar Pierre The Great.

Good to know! You can find on this island are the trendiest nightclubs in Moscow. On weekends, there are taxi caps after midnight so there are so many people. On the other hand, if you go there in winter and during the day, the island is quite empty and less interesting to see.

Gorky Park is one of the TOP places to visit in Moscow, because it allows you to better understand the life of the locals and their rhythm. In fact, it’s a huge entertainment park. For example, in winter there is a giant ice rink and in summer – free dance or yoga lessons, sandy beaches for playing volleyball, an outdoor cinema. So, like the locals, have a Stakantchik (ice cream or cooked corn), and enjoy the atmosphere of the place: that’s one of the interesting things to do in Moscow to discover the city.

• Where? Krymsky Val 9. 20 minutes’ walk from Krasny Oktyabr, along the quays.

Sparrow Hill and Moscow State University

The Sparrow Hill, Vorobiovy Gori in Russian, is the highest point in Moscow. It is rather known to Russians, but less to travelers. A nice view on Moscow opens from the hill, and in particular on the Luzhniki Stadium. In addition, on the hill itself is the Moscow State University: an impressive skyscraper from the Soviet era.

• How to get there? By bus T7 (35 min) from Oktyaborskaya station, near Gorki Park. By metro (Vorobiovy Gorki station) + climb the hill on foot. On foot along the Moskva along the Gorky Park (1h30) + climb in funiculars.

Good to know! It is possible to cross the Moskva river by funicular. We actually tested it and it was pretty cool! That is one of our favorite things to do in Moscow!

What to do in Moscow in 3 days?

If you are going to visit Moscow in 3 days, it would be interesting to dive into the Soviet era which strongly marked the country and the city. Walking on Arbat Street

All Russians know Rue Arbat. So, walking on Arbat street is one of the things to do in Moscow. However, after the years, little by little it became very touristy. This is a pedestrian street only. There are souvenir shops, restaurants and cafes there, but it is no longer the most authentic neighborhood in the city.

Seeing the buildings of Moskva-City (Moscow City)

Moskva-City is Moscow’s business center, much like Paris’s Defense district. The skyscrapers of Moskva-City are among the tallest in Europe: 373 meters high! Very nice place to see at dusk.

Good to know! You can admire a nice view of Moscow City from the docks of Tarasa Shevchenko. It’s especially beautiful in the evening with all the lights on.

Bunker 42, one of the most unusual things to do in Moscow

Bunker 42 is a secret military complex which was to be used by the Soviets in the event of a nuclear attack: a space of 7000 m² 65 meters underground!

If you are interested in history and want to see Russian cities on a rather “human scale”, it would certainly be interesting for you to discover the cities of the Golden Ring . For example, it is very easy to get to Sergey Posad from Moscow (less than 2 hours in train). Visiting the Golden Ring is one of the best things to do in Moscow if you are staying more than a 5-6 days.

International Travel Is Shaking Up The World’s Busiest Airports List

The sheer volume of air passengers last year reflects a robust return to travel — and a shift toward tourism hotspots in Asia and the Middle East.

Global travelers' preferences are shifting, with the Middle East and Asia gaining ground.

C lose to 8.5 billion passengers took a plane trip last year, according to Airports Council International (ACI) World’s just-released list of the top 10 busiest airports worldwide for 2023.

The total volume of passengers represents a 27% overall jump from 2022, fueled by a 37% boost the international travel market—nearly double the 20% increase for domestic travel. Even more notable is how shifts toward tourism hotspots are shaking up the world order for airports.

The increases themselves are not surprising, as last year was a bumper year for travel spending. Tourists around the world injected nearly $10 trillion into the global economy in 2023, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council. That figure represents 9.1% of global GDP.

After crunching the data from over 2,600 airports across more than 180 countries and territories globally, ACI World revealed no change at the top of the busiest-airport list, where Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International has sat at No. 1 for more than two decades. Four other U.S. airports also landed in the top 10: Dallas Fort Worth fell one spot to No. 3; Denver fell three spots to No. 6; Los Angeles fell two spots to No. 8; and Chicago fell five spots to No. 9.

Outside the U.S., there were some very notable shifts reflecting the changing tourism landscape. “Dubai International Airport jumped to second rank for the first time, while Tokyo Haneda International Airport witnessed a remarkable ascent from 16th position in 2022 to 5th in 2023,” said ACI World Director General Luis Felipe de Oliveira. “Additionally, the unwavering strength of Istanbul and New Delhi airports keep them in top ranks, marking significant progress over [pre-pandemic] 2019.”

Viewed through a wider lens, the 2023 numbers reflect a strengthening of international travel in the Middle East and Asia, said ACI World.

When domestic travel is not included, Dubai International Airport is the world’s No. 1 busiest airport, followed by a trio of European heavyweights: London Heathrow (No. 2), Amsterdam Schiphol (No. 3), and Paris Charles-de-Gaulle (No. 4).

On the international stage, the biggest movers were in Asia. Singapore Changi Airport jumped from No. 9 to No. 5, with an eye-popping 83% increase in international volume. Yet it was Incheon International Airport in Seoul, South Korea, which made the biggest leap from No. 32 to No. 7, due to a massive 213% boost in international passenger traffic, driven mainly by visitors from Japan, China, Taiwan and and elsewhere in Asia.

The 13 summer trips Americans are searching for the most, according to Google Flights

• Google Flights revealed the top searched destinations on its platform for summer 2024.
• The data is based on the most searched travel destinations from US users between June and August.
• Neither New York nor Paris took the top spot.

If you're looking to get away this summer, you may find inspiration from Google Flights' list of the top searched destinations for the summer of 2024.

The list is based on US users' most searched destinations on Google Flights for travel between June 1 and August 31.

The list remained largely consistent from 2023, but Chicago and San Francisco didn't make the top 20 this year. The insights also revealed that searches about travel itineraries and "solo travel" reached an all-time high in January 2024.

Here are the top 13 destinations.

13. Barcelona

There's a long list of tourist attractions in Barcelona including renowned museums featuring Picasso and Joan Miró, exploring the Gothic Quarter's architecture. Barcelona is also well known for its iconic nightlife.

Miami is known for its clear beaches and vibrant culture. It's also rated second in US News and World Report's "10 Best Party Cities " in the US.

The travel destination is also a popular site for families, and made the third spot in Google searches for top places to do things with kids, according to Google trend insights from for January 14 to March 14.

11. Los Angeles

Located in Southern California, LA is known for its beaches, Hollywood glamour, Mediterranean climate, and wellness culture. The city has a number of tourist sites, including the iconic Hollywood sign, Universal Studios, and the Getty Center.

If you plan to visit LA, make sure you factor in the cost of transportation — and the time you may spend in traffic .

Athens is rich in history and has a number of tourist attractions. BI has previously suggested visiting the Athens National Garden National Garden, the Acropolis, Panathenaic Stadium, Areopagus Hill, and Mount Lycabettus.

Seattle , often referred to as the Emerald City, is home to major companies like Amazon, Starbucks, and Tableau. Surrounded by water, mountains, and forest, it's also known for classic attractions like the Space Needle, Pike Place Market, and its grunge music scene.

8. Las Vegas

Las Vegas is known for its extravagant gambling scene and luxurious hotels . It was also ranked the number one city to party as of August 2023, according to US News and World Report.

It's not just a hot spot for bachelor parties though — according to Google travel insights from January 14 to March 14, it was the number one location people searched in the US for places to go as a couple.

Orlando was the first ranked location for searches that led with the prompt "things to do" with kids, according to Google travel insights from January 14 to March 14. The Florida destination is filled with family-friendly tourist attractions , like Disney World, Universal Studios, and SeaWorld.

Located on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, Cancún is a popular vacation destination known for its Caribbean waters, luxurious all-inclusive resorts , and vibrant nightlife. That, and it's often budget-friendly for the experience you're getting.

Cancún moved down from second to sixth place in Google Flights' 2024 destination list. The popular vacation spot was also listed in the top five locations for couples and families searching to get away, according to Google search insights from January 14 to March 14.

5. New York

New York City, also known as the Big Apple or the city that never sleeps, has a seemingly endless list of tourist attractions. It has iconic landmarks, like the Statue of Liberty; world-renowned museums; a vibrant theatre scene; eclectic nightlife; and some of the world's best restaurants.

New York has something for everyone — but it's expensive. Prepare to spend more on everyday items if you visit New York City.

Rome is filled with rich history and architecture that makes it an easy site for tourists to occupy themselves. Vatican City, St. Peter's Basilica, and the Colosseum are a few of the most popular spots.

If you do visit Rome, make sure you avoid common tourist mistakes and tip the servers.

Tokyo rose from eighth place to third in the last year, according to Google Flights.

The city in Japan has a convenient public transportation system and is relatively affordable. It also includes culturally rich sites like Shibuya Crossing, Tokyo Tower, and Sensō-ji Temple .

Paris is known for its authentic culture, charming architecture, and buttery croissants.

If you visit Paris, you'll want to visit some of the famous tourist attractions like the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and the Palace of Versailles. That, and you may want to brush up on your French too.

London maintained its spot as the number one searched tourist destination for summer travel. While living in London can be expensive and cloudy, the city is lively and vibrant during the summer.

Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, and the thriving theatre scene are just a few of the activities this city has to offer.
