5 Amazing Things To Do In Munroe Island: India’s Hidden Venice

While you read this article, a tiny island in Kerala is sinking by the hour. It will submerge in water by 2050, according to experts.

If it happens, it’ll be devastating as I consider it one of Kerala’s jewels that can give any other tourist destination in ‘God’s Own Country’ a run for their money.

I’m talking about Munroe Island.

It is a highly underrated and unexplored tourist destination in Kerala, known for its backwaters like Alleppey but without the crowds. While Alleppey is famous as the Venice of India, Munroe Island is called the ‘Hidden Venice of India’.

I spent a weekend here relaxing to the views and sounds of nature as I explored this island on foot. In this guide, I want to share with you the 5 amazing things to do in Munroe Island that’ll make this place one of your best memories in Kerala.

5. View a splendid sunset from S-curve viewpoint

Is Munroe Island sinking?

History of munroe island.

things to do in munroe island

Munroe Island, also known as Mundrothuruthu, has a rich history associated with it. Back in the 1800s, when the British governed the State of Travancore (modern-day southern Kerala and southern Tamil Nadu), the East India Company appointed Colonel John Munroe as its administrative head.

He was responsible for many progressive reforms that included removing corruption, abolishing slavery and improving the state’s revenue. He set up the foundation for the high levels of literacy that you see in Kerala today.

Under his governance, the Munroe Island was formed by digging canals and joining several backwater regions. Due to his contributions to the State of Travancore, this archipelago of eight islands honoured him by attaching his name to it.

Where is Munroe Island?

Mundrothuruthu is a group of eight islets located at the meeting point of Ashtamudi Lake and Kallada River in Kollam. It has a total area of 13.4 km sq. It is so tiny that you can cover the entire island on foot or by bicycle.

The island is full of coconut trees with few houses spread across backwaters, lagoons and canals. At 25 km from Kollam, Munroe Island takes you back to the village life in Kerala.

You’ll find lots of coconut trees here, fewer crowds and most importantly, complete silence as there are very few vehicles passing through this village. As such, if you want to spend some peaceful time with nature and experience the village life, Munroe Island will not disappoint you.

5 amazing things to do in Munroe Island

While Munroe Island is small, it offers a variety of things for every traveller. Given below are the 5 amazing things to do in Munroe Island based on my personal experiences:

1. Experience a unique canal cruise through Munroe Island

munroe island lake resort

The canal cruise on Munroe Island is one of the most popular things to do in Munroe Island. Even if you don’t plan to stay here, you must give it a try.

It is the USP of Munroe Island Tourism.

The canal cruise is a 2-hour ride on a canoe (a local country boat) with a boatsman who guides the canoe with his stick. You’ll be sailing through narrow canals that surround themselves with palm and coconut trees.

As the water is calm, you’ll see plenty of reflections of the surrounding nature. You’ll also go past houses as you see people in Mundrothuruthu indulging in their daily lives.

After passing through several canals, you’ll enter the Ashtamudi lake, which opens a different landscape. The lake is vast and you’ll occasionally encounter other boats, including the local passenger boats. The highlight of the canoe ride is the mangrove plantation you pass through on this lake.

munroe island kerala

Sit back and enjoy time passing by slowly on this 2-hour canoe ride while observing the sights and sounds of nature.

The best time to do the canoe tour is during sunrise or sunset when the weather is pleasant, and the colours are vibrant. However, you can preferably go in the morning to avoid other tourists who’ll be doing canoe tours in the evening.

You can book a canoe tour with your homestay/resort. Most of these places either have their canoe or tie-up with canoe owners.

2. Explore Munroe Island intimately on foot/bicycle

where is munroe island

Now that you’ve explored the island through a boat, it’s time to explore on foot or by bicycle. It is one of the most unique things to do in Munroe Island as you’ll observe this island more intimately.

For example, I observed that a lot of households have their farms cultivating cinnamon, papaya, banana, passion fruit and fish farms among others. If you’re lucky, you may also find the locals making coir.

There is a lot of birdwatching on this island as well as you may encounter kingfishers, cranes and egrets.

While roaming around, have coconut water or lime soda from one of the local shops here. They’ll energize you like nothing else. You can also have the local shakes and juices here.

For renting a cycle, enquire with your homestay. Depending on the homestay, it is available for free or at a reasonable rate.

3. Enjoy traditional Kerala food and lip-smacking seafood

trivandrum to munroe island

As Munroe Island surrounds itself with lakes, canals and backwater, you’ll get an assortment of lip-smacking seafood here. You’ll find prawns, crabs and a variety of fishes to satisfy your taste buds.

If you’re a vegetarian, you can enjoy the traditional Kerala food in Munroe Island. Idly-chutney, puttu-kadala and appam-stew are some popular breakfast items on this island that are given as complimentary along with your stay.

It is a great way to experience the local cuisine. As compared to other commercialised places in Kerala, the food in Mundrothuruthu is freshly prepared by all homestays/resorts as you won’t find any fancy restaurants here.

4. Visit an ancient Dutch church built in AD 1878

how to reach munroe island

There is a Dutch church on Munroe Island that is one of the oldest churches in Kerala. Built-in AD 1878 by the Dutch, its architecture is a blend of Dutch-Kerala and made of red bricks.

It is a deserted church that doesn’t have any services. The location of the church adds to the eerieness and beauty of this church.

It’s located in a secluded area in Mundrothuruthu near the banks of Ashtamudi Lake making it an ideal place to spend your evenings. Near the church, you’ll find another establishment and an old shed where you can watch the sunset over the lake.

Reaching this church is also an adventure. You have to cross a railway line and pass through some fields to make your way here.

varkala to munroe island

As the name suggests, the S-curve viewpoint is an S-shaped path that separates the Ashtamudi lake from the backwaters. Hence, you’ll observe calm waters on one side and flowing water on the other side.

At this place, you’ll also find several boat services including the canoe tour. If you don’t plan to stay at Munro Island, you can hire a boat from this point.

If you want to relax and chill, there’s a small restaurant where you can have tea/coffee and have some snacks in the evening.

But most importantly, this spot is famous for its sunrises and sunsets. As such, don’t miss this place if you’re at Munroe Island.

You can reach the S-curve viewpoint on foot.

Best places to stay in Munroe Island

Some homestays/resorts also offer pickup and drop service at an additional cost if you’re travelling to or from Kochi/Trivandrum airport. Contact your property to know if they offer this service.

Given below are some popular homestays and resorts in Munroe Island that’ll give you an amazing hospitality:

1. Munroe Island Backwaters Homestay

mundrothuruthu

The Munroe Island Backwaters Homestay was one of the first homestays to prop up on this island. As Munroe Island started gaining tourist attraction, this homestay became popular and paved the way for other homestays that you see today on the island.

Run by Vijeesh, this homestay was started by his father 10-15 years back. At the time, it was the only homestay on this island.

If you’re looking for a local experience on the island, Vijeesh’ homestay should be your priority. He’s an experienced guide who can take you around the island and tell you things that you may not find anywhere. At his homestay, his family prepares home-cooked traditional South Indian food.

You can find his homestay on various apps like Agoda and Booking.com. If you have any doubts or want to make an enquiry, search for this homestay on Google and you’ll find his number.

2. Munroe Island Lake Resort

ashtamudi lake

It is one of the most popular resorts in Munroe Island. They provide cottages of different kinds that you can choose according to your needs. All their cottages face the lake and provide complimentary breakfast.

The location of the  Munroe Island Lake Resort  is its USP. It’s covered with coconut trees and surrounds itself with backwaters and lakes. You can find different kinds of birds nearby and cover all the prominent places on the island on foot from here.

Apart from that, they organise canoe tours and houseboat tours at an additional cost. If you need a bicycle, they’ll provide you with the same.

You can expect freshly-prepared South Indian food here three times a day. Make sure to try their seafood as they prepare the same from their farm.

They have a full-fledged website in case you need more details about them. While this resort is ideal for everyone, it is one of the best value-for-money destinations on the island if you’re looking for a honeymoon.

3. Vini’s Farm

munroe island tourism

If you need a unique experience and have some money to spare,  Vini’s Farm  is an ideal resort for you.   A bit on the expensive side, Vini’s farm is a private island where you’ll get complete privacy unlike the other accommodations on Munroe Island.

It is one of the most popular resorts not just in Munroe Island but also in Kerala as it has been featured in news and covered in various blogs.

They provide wooden cottages on their island and have different types of packages that you can book from their website. These packages may include a private chef and a romantic sunset cruise depending on your package.

They also provide kayaking, fishing, barbeque, candlelight dinner, yoga classes, ayurvedic massage and speed boat at an additional cost.

Vini’s Farm is perfect for couples and families.

Best time to visit Munroe Island

Being a tropical island, the weather remains hot and humid, especially during the day. Hence, if you want to beat the heat, October-February is an ideal time to visit Munroe Island.

The weather becomes hot starting from March end till May. And from June onwards, the monsoon season starts in Kerala and can last till September. Floods have also become increasingly common during the monsoon season in the last few years.

Hence, you should avoid visiting Munroe Island during monsoon season at all costs.

According to researchers, the island is sinking and is expected to be underwater by 2050. There have been many reasons attributed to it including global warming and climate change.

The construction of the Thenmala dam in the Kallada river in the 1970s has stopped the flow of freshwater to Munroe Island. This freshwater contained clay-rich soil that used to get deposited near the island making its soil fertile.

The tsunami that occurred in 2004 and the floods that have been happening with great regularity in Kerala in recent years have further destroyed the mangroves present here causing further havoc.

Hence, you’ll find many properties here that are either made of wood or built on raised platforms. As such, Munroe Island Tourism will only continue to grow but responsible tourism is the need of the hour.

THE MUNROE ISLAND TRAVEL GUIDE

THE MUNROE ISLAND TRAVEL GUIDE

Planning a trip to Kerala and in need for inspiration? Well, I’l give you one: make sure to include Munroe island in your Kerala itinerary plans. This Munroe Island travel guide includes all the essential practical information and tips you need to know for planning your trip along with the best things to do there. Read this now and thank me later!

When I think of Munroe island, only one word comes to my mind: Beauty. This tiny cluster of villages, located amidst the lush green foliage and backwaters is an underrated off beat gem in Kerala, hardly known outside the passionate travel community. Which honestly is both a relief and a pity: relief for the place itself so that that it does not end up suffering from hordes of tourists and their after effects. And pity for everyone who has travelled to Kerala and missed out on this gem.

In recent years however, Munroe island is slowly becoming popular among the younger crowd, thanks to those instagram reels of its beautiful backwaters. These visitors usually tend to arrive on a half day trip from Varkala, eager to tick off insta’s new favourite. I however wanted to experience Munroe in all it’s charm, so I decided to stay overnight in a local home-stay. My conclusion: Munroe island is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen in  India.

HISTORY OF MUNROE ISLAND

Munroe island is named after Colonel John Munroe, the British Resident of the erstwhile princely state of Travancore who was the administrator of the island. He undertook a lot of reforms and also took steps to prevent flooding of the area by land reclamation efforts at the delta of Ashtamundi lake with Kalladi river. This was done by digging up and integrating a series of inter connected canals and this reclaimed land was named as Munroe island after him.

munroe island travel guide

HOW TO REACH MUNROE ISLAND

Munroe island actually comprises 8 small islets that are located at the confluence of Ashtamundi Lake and Kallada river in the Kollam district of Kerala. The nearest town is Kollam, located around 20 kms away.

Flight: The nearest airport is Trivandrum (80 kms away) you can hire a cab or arrange for a pick up to reach your homestay.

Train: The island has it’s own railway station called Munroturuttu. Trains run from Kollam (20 mins), Trivandrum (2 hrs) and Kochi (3 hrs). You can hire auto rickshaws from the train station to drop you at your home-stay.

Road: If you are coming from Varkala like most other tourists, hire a cab for the 50 kms ride which should cost approx

WHY YOU SHOULD VISIT MUNROE ISLAND

If you want to experience Kerala’s famed backwaters and scenery in a low key and non commercialised manner, Munroe island is your place. While Allepey and Kumarokom are internationally famous, Munroe offers the same beautiful views in a more authentic experience. I visited Allepey too, but preferred Munroe thanks to it’s more natural and low key charm.

WHEN TO VISIT MUNROE ISLAND

The best time to visit is during the dry season from November to March. Summer begins from April and sightseeing in the hot and humid weather becomes very difficult and exhausting. During the monsoon season from July to September prices drop and nature is at its best, but there may be flooding of these canals and low lying areas. If you want to see the Kalladi river race, visit during September-October when it takes place.

HOW MANY DAYS SHOULD YOU SPEND IN MUNROE ISLAND

I would suggest at least 1 night in Munroe island to appreciate the beauty of the place and experience a local home-stay. An additional day will be even better with more time to explore the village, lake and the scenic beauty surrounding it.

WHERE TO STAY IN MUNROE ISLAND

  • Green Chromide Homestay
  • Munroe Island Backwaters homestay
  • Vini’s farm
  • Munroe Island Lake resort
  • Lake and River resort

OUR STAY: Munroe Island Backwaters Homestay (by Vijeesh)

munroe island tourism

I highly reccomend staying in a homestay here and Vijeesh’s Munroe backwaters homestay is one of the best. I was so happy with the experience, their hospitality, food and the boat tour. The rooms are clean and comfortable; the food is home cooked by his mother with lots of traditional Kerala dishes. The boat tour was super impressive too ! You can book this homestay  here.

GETTING AROUND IN MUNROE ISLAND

Its a pretty small village so you can easily walk around and explore. Alternately, rent a bike from your homestay and ride through the entire village.

THE BEST THINGS TO DO IN MUNROE ISLAND

  • GO FOR A SUNRISE/SUNSET BOAT RIDE THROUGH THE CANALS

This is the sole reason for Munroes’s rising fame, the reason why travellers are making the effort to come to this tiny Kerala village without much comforts: Boating through the canals. Munroe island has this network of inter connected canals that criss cross through the village before opening into the vast Ashtamundi lake. The boat ride here is manual, without engines to disturb the peace and pollute the water. This makes it even more special. Boating here will give you a peek at local village life, passing by houses with their inhabitants going on with their daily life and activities like coir making, prawn farming and fishing. This is something you won’t really get to experience in the bigger Allepey or Kumarokom boats. The canals are lined up with tall coconut palm trees and an abundance of lush natural greenery. It is honestly one of the most scenic places I have seen during my travels. At times, it feels thrilling, when we have to duck under low lying bridges or arches.

The best time to go for a boat ride is during sunrise or sunset when the sky becomes filled with beautiful colours that make the experience even more special.

We did a 2 hour sunset boat ride with the famous Vijeesh, who deftly manouvered the boat while taking us along for the beautiful journey. Vijeesh made sure to take us through most of the narrow canals passing by the village (which is where most the charm lies) before entering the lake, whereas many others usually do a shortened canal tour to spend more time on the lake.

2. SEE THE FAMOUS MANGROVE ARCH

At the end of the boat ride you will come across thick mangrove plantations in the lake. Along with that you will get to see a famous instagram spot: the naturally formed mangrove arch. If you time it well, you will see the setting sun within this arch like we got to see!

3. EXPLORE THE VILLAGE

Walk or cycle through the narrow alleys of the village to see local village life. You can get to see farms, coir making and can also indulge in a bit of bird watching. End the day by tasting Munroe mocktail at the local shop.

4. VISIT THE DUTCH CHURCH

The church here is one of the oldest in Kerala, built in 1878 by the Dutch. Reaching here is a mini adventure in itself by crossing a railway line and walking across some fields. The church is isolated and not in use. Walk past the church and cross a few coconut tree plantations to reach a shed from where you can see the vast lake. This is another beautiful sunset spot in Munroe island.

5. GO TO THE S CURVE VIEWPOINT

This is a S-shaped path that separates the lake from the backwaters. Several boats can be found here and you can come here to choose boating or canoe services. This spot is also famous for it’s sunrises and sunsets.

6. VISIT THE JOHN MUNROE BUNGALOW

This 200 year old colonial bungalow belonging to the resident Colonel John Munroe and has now been converted into a mini museum. It houses several portraits of Munroe and his family and descendents. The local caretaker here is happy to show people around.

7. EAT A TRADITIONAL KERALA MEAL WITH A LOCAL FAMILY

One of my favourite Kerala experiences was staying in a Munroe homestay and eating local, traditional home cooked food. Vijeesh’s mother cooked all our meals and we were very happy with the food they provided which included fish, prawns, idli, appam, puttu with a number of side dishes, stew, chutneys and pickles. I will always savour the taste of that food.

That’s when I stumbled upon Munroe Island. It turned out to be a stunningly beautiful, quiet spot, just perfect for relaxing and soaking in the natural beauty of Kerala. It’s like you’ve stepped into a different world, where everything is peaceful and oh-so-natural.

As you glide through narrow, winding canals on a traditional country boat, with nothing but the sound of water and birds for company. It’s so peaceful that you can actually hear yourself think! The beauty of this place is in the simple things. Watching the sunset over the backwaters is just magical. And if you’re up for it, try your hand at fishing with the local fishermen. It’s so much fun!

Munroe Island is not your typical tourist spot. It’s a place where you can truly unwind and experience the laid-back, rustic side of Kerala. Trust me, you’ll love it here!

Where is Munroe Island

Munroe Island, or Mundrothuruth as it’s locally known, spanning 13.4 square kilometers, lies beautifully at the meeting point of Asthamudi Lake and Kallada River . Comprising eight smaller islets in the Kollam district of Kerala, this island forms a captivating network of canals surrounded by verdant greenery.

History of Munroe Island

Munroe Island has a rich history tied to its namesake, Colonel John Munroe , a British resident and influential Deewan of Travancore between 1810 and 1819. Known for his significant land reforms, Munroe was a notable figure.

In response to a request from a senior priest for land to establish a seminary and a settlement for Christians, Munroe generously obliged. The grateful community named the island in his honor as a mark of respect.

While you’re checking out the more celebrated destinations in Kerala , make sure to add Munroe Island to your list for a unique and peaceful experience.

Beautiful Things to do in Munroe Island Kerala

Here’s a list of the best things to do on Munroe Island, Kerala!

Explore the Enchanting Waterways of Munroe Island

munroe island crusie and sunset

Sail through Munroe Island’s hidden canals, a journey revealing the island’s beauty and daily life. The locals, who know these waters like the back of their hand, are always ready to take you on a tour (lasts for 2 to 3 hours) through the narrow waterways in their canoes. The canals, surrounded by coconut trees, are a treat. Make sure to try a fresh coconut, picked right before your eyes!

Navigating through Munroe’s canals is like a mini-adventure. Some passages are so tight, barely allowing the canoe to slip through, while at other spots, we ducked to avoid low-hanging branches. Watching our canoe guide skillfully steer through these challenges was impressive – it’s their everyday life, after all.

As the canoe meandered from the quaint residential areas into the lush mangroves and finally out into the expansive Ashtamudi Lake, the scenery was mesmerizing. The sunset was a highlight, with the sun playing hide and seek behind the trees, casting a kaleidoscope of oranges and purples across the sky. The peacefulness of the surroundings and the stunning views were soul-soothing.

Whether you choose to explore in the crisp morning air or during the golden hours of the evening, it’s a magical experience. We were lucky to catch a breathtaking sunset, a perfect end to our day in this little slice of paradise.

We arranged a 2-hour canoe trip through our resort, which was a great deal at INR 900 for our family of four (two adults and two kids) in 2019. The price of the tour ranges between INR 1000 to INR 3000 depending upon the time and other facilities provided during the tour.

For other cruising options, many tourists recommend Munroe Island Backwaters Canoe tour led by Vijeesh. You can also explore canal cruises offered by the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) in Kollam.

Enjoy Fishing with Locals

Fish farm and prawn farm covers in Munroe Island

During our canoe ride, our inquisitive nature led us to question our guide about the blue nets across the water, learning they were protective covers for fish and prawn farms. He suggested a fishing session with the locals for a unique experience.

This turned out to be not just fun, but a wonderful learning opportunity for the whole family. We gained insights into local life, and the kids were thrilled with the hands-on fishing adventure, making it a memorable part of our trip.

We even had a chance to feed the fish, an activity that was simple yet filled with joy, especially for the children.

Walk or Bike Through the Munroe Island

Cycling through Munroe Island

We took advantage of the bicycles provided by our resort to explore the quaint pathways of Munroe Island.

On our bike ride, we stumbled upon a popular spot, ideal for watching sunsets and renting canoes or boats. The island is small enough to comfortably walk around and discover its charm. It’s quite a sight to see local homes with backyards brimming with bananas, coconuts, and especially passion fruit.

We were intrigued by the abundance of fruit vines, and upon asking, learned that the ‘fashion fruit’ we saw was actually passion fruit. It seems to be a local favorite!

Our exploration was made even more delightful when we stopped to try the famous Munroe mocktail . Known for its refreshing blend of local flavors, it’s a must-try on the island. We found that the Munroe Mocktail restaurant is particularly renowned for this special drink, offering a unique taste of Munroe Island in a glass. This stop was a perfect way to rejuvenate ourselves as we immersed in the island’s natural and cultural richness.

A heads-up: the bicycles don’t come with child seats, just a flat rack at the back. The men’s bicycles have a rod at the front. If you’re traveling with young children who might not be comfortable, you might want to skip the bike ride.

Witness the Traditional Art of Coir Making

In Munroe Island, you’ll find that coir-making goes beyond being a mere craft, it’s a way of life for many locals. This traditional skill involves weaving coconut husks into coir, a versatile natural fiber. As you wander around the island, you might spot residents busy at this art, transforming the husks right in their homes.

It’s fascinating to watch the process, which has been passed down through generations. The skill and speed with which they work are impressive, showing years of practice and dedication. Observing coir-making offers a glimpse into the island’s culture and the ingenuity of its people, who have harnessed the natural resources around them to create a sustainable livelihood.

This experience is a unique opportunity to appreciate the simplicity and resourcefulness of life on Munroe Island. Observing coir-making on Munroe Island offers a window into the islanders’ profound bond with their environment and traditions, beyond simply witnessing a local craft .

Indulge in Bird Watching

Munroe Island is a paradise for those who love birds. With a diverse array of species nestled in the backwaters and mangroves, it’s a fantastic spot for families to bond over nature.

Kids will be thrilled to spot different birds, making it both an educational and entertaining experience for the whole family.

Witness the Kallada Boat Race

snake boat race kerala

Boat races are an integral part of the culture of Kerala. The sight of traditional snake boats, each manned by up to 100 rowers, is both exhilarating and iconic. As the rowers increase their pace, the water churns more vigorously, amplifying the excitement and cheers from the spectators.

This thrilling event takes place 28 days post Onam, Kerala’s harvest festival, usually around August or September, on the Kallada river. Munroe Island offers an ideal vantage point to witness this spectacular regatta.

Visit the Dutch Church

The Dutch Church on Munroe Island is a cool spot for families to explore. Built back in 1878, this old red brick church near Lake Ashtamudi shows how the Dutch and Kerala styles mixed.

Even though there aren’t regular church services anymore, it’s still a neat place to see and learn about history. Imagine telling the kids stories about the old days and how people from different parts of the world influenced this little island. It’s like a little adventure back in time, perfect for curious minds!

Catch a Sunrise or Sunset

sunset on munroe island kerala

Watching the sunrise or sunset on Munroe Island is a must-do for families. Imagine finding a comfortable spot by the water’s edge, where you and the kids can watch the sky transform with vibrant colors.

The S Curve View Point aka Munroe Viewpoint is renowned as the best spot on the island for these moments.

From here, the sun’s rising or setting rays create mesmerizing reflections on the backwaters, enhancing the natural beauty of the surroundings. This viewpoint, with its unique curve and panoramic view, offers a serene and truly awe-inspiring atmosphere. It’s a simple yet unforgettable way to start or end your day together.

The Perumon Railway Bridge is another excellent spot for watching a beautiful sunrise or sunset on the island. The bridge, known for its historical significance due to a major railway accident in 1988, provides a unique backdrop for the sunrise and sunset views. This location offers a striking contrast of the serene Keralan backwaters and the architectural marvel of the bridge.

Munroe Island Travel Tips

Best time to visit munroe island.

You can visit Munroe Island any time of the year, but the best months are from November to February, when the weather is pleasant.

We went there at the end of March, and it was quite hot and humid. It’s important to stay hydrated during this time.

A handy tip: It’s better to avoid the monsoon season, as there’s a risk of flooding.

How to Reach Munroe Island

Getting to Munroe Island is quite straightforward whether you prefer train, road, or ferry.

The island has its own small railway station known as Munroturuttu , identified by the code MQO , which links to Kollam. For those coming from farther away, Kollam, located 25 km from Munroe Island, is the nearest major railway station. From there, you can easily hop on a rickshaw (Tuktuk) to reach Munroe.

If you’re flying in, the closest airport is Trivandrum International Airport , about 70 km from the island. There are plenty of cabs and taxis available at the airport, and you also have the option to rent a car if you prefer driving yourself.

For train enthusiasts, the Guruvayur – Thiruvananthapuram Intercity Express is a convenient option, running between the two cities.

Eating on Munroe Island is all about simplicity and local flavors . Since it’s a small place without fancy restaurants, your best bet is to enjoy meals at your homestay or hotel. This is a fantastic chance to taste authentic, home-cooked local dishes.

Also, make sure to try the fresh coconut water and the coconuts themselves. You could even have a go at plucking your own coconut, just like we did – it’s a fun and unique experience!

Where to Stay on Munroe Island

Lake n River Resort Munroe Island

Munroe Island is unique in that almost every residence doubles as a homestay, offering an authentic local experience .

Among these, Munroe Island Backwaters Homestay , managed by Vijeesh, stands out. It’s said that Vijeesh’s father was a pioneer in establishing the homestay trend here over a decade ago, inspiring others to follow suit.

If homestays aren’t what you’re looking for, there are several good properties to consider:

Lake n River Resort : Located at a picturesque spot surrounded by water, this resort offers stunning views of the mangroves and palms. It’s perfect for relaxation and also has swings, badminton, and cricket facilities.

Munroe Island Lake Resort : Known as one of the finest hotels on the island, it offers a blend of comfort and nature.

Munroe Paradise : A charming option for those seeking a peaceful retreat.

Munroe Eco Camps : For those wanting a more rugged, close-to-nature experience, these camps provide a no-frills but authentic outdoor stay.

We spent one night on the island, which was a serene and rejuvenating experience, perfect for nature lovers. While a day is enough to see the sights, you might want to stay longer to fully embrace the local lifestyle.

Keep in Mind: The hotels and resorts here offer basic amenities, so set your expectations for simplicity over luxury.

If you prefer not to stay overnight on the island, consider a day trip from Kollam . There are luxurious accommodation options in Kollam such as The Raviz Resort Spa, Ashtamudi , and The Quilon Beach Hotel and Convention Center , both offering a more upscale stay.

Our family always looks for a place like Munroe Island in our travels, so we can take a break from the busy world and relax for a bit. If you feel the same way, this charming little island should definitely be on your list of places to visit in Kerala. Trust me, it’s a little slice of paradise that you and your loved ones will cherish forever.

Munroe Island Update: Beauty Amidst Environmental Shifts

Back in 2019, I shared the enchanting beauty of Munroe Island – a serene escape nestled in Kerala’s backwaters, a paradise for those seeking the silence and peacefulness of nature. Today, as I revisit this topic, it’s essential to shed light on a significant issue that has emerged since my last post.

Recent reports and investigations as of late 2022 have highlighted a growing environmental concern – Munroe Island is facing the threat of submergence. Its size has dramatically reduced from 13.4 sq km to just 3.52 sq km over three decades, affecting both the geography and the lives of its residents.

The causes are multi-fold, including the devastating effects of the 2004 Tsunami and ongoing climate change, leading to rising sea levels. Additionally, human actions like improper farming practices and dam construction have worsened the situation.

Despite these challenges, the island’s allure remains, with its lush scenery and tranquil waterways. Yet, it’s vital to recognize its vulnerability and seek innovative solutions like amphibian housing and eco-friendly tourism to sustain this unique environment and support the local community.

Munroe Island’s situation serves as a stark reminder of the broader implications of climate change, emphasizing the need for proactive environmental conservation.

Munroe Meadows Homestay in Munroe Island

Homestay – Stay with Locals

The essence of travelling expands a trillion times living with the locals. The best bet to know more the culture and hideouts of Munroe Island was to stay at a homestay – in constant company of a local host family. Munroe Island has several homestays, but I would recommend Munroe Meadows – for a warm, extremely hospitable and memorable stay. Our host Ajith and Anjana ensured we make the most of everything.

Not only did we see and explore Munroe Island in a different light, but it also gave us an insight about their traditions, culture, belief, food habits and religious values. The homestay host ensured we get to know things better by explaining the rituals of ongoing festival in the adjacent temple. The free bicycles were the brownie points.

cycling around the lanes of Munroe Island

Cycle around the Narrow Lanes

Riding a bicycle through the rickety countryside lanes of Munroe Island was completely liberating. Munroe Island, on a personal front, will be very special for me because it was my first time in 30 years, I rode a bicycle. For someone, who has never ridden a bicycle, the experience of riding the cycle through the untouched corners was exciting. There was a lot of panic – riding on the main road with the vehicles storming past, but it boosted my confidence. The bicycle is the best way to explore Munroe Island – ride past the quaint homes, on the road along the lake and to all the hidden gems.

The backwater boat ride in Munroe Island

Sunrise Boat Ride on Backwaters

Early mornings are the greatest gift to humanity – the silence in the aura and the subtle surrounding, makes it all pacifying. Adding a soul to this is the sound of the calming backwaters, as the country boat rowed past the narrow passage of water into the vast expanse of the lake. The dawn slowly unfolded and painted the sky into a palette of vibrant colors. As we sat, being rowed on the wobbly boat, the gentle breeze unfurled its way welcoming the bright day ahead. It was a moment of tranquil, an experience that will stay knitted to my soul. The best part of the boat ride was spotting numerous birds including eagles.

The phenomenal sunset over the backwaters

Chase those Soul Feeding Sunsets

Sunsets are always phenomenal, no matter how many times you have watched it. But digging those sunsets from a place that is only known to the locals without any tourist is epic. The best part of staying in the homestay is Ajith – our host, took us to a hidden spot for the sunset. As the sun set, the cloud beautifully spread a golden orange glow in the sky. Munroe Island is a place that will feed your soul with gorgeous sunsets and natural bliss, if you know the right place. The hidden corners, known by the locals, are great way to connect to nature.

The last night celebration of the temple festival

Attend a Temple Festival

If you are in Munroe Island at the right time, you will witness pomp and show, devotion and religious ceremonies in the local temple. There was a 10-day religious festival going on in the temple adjacent to our homestay. The whole village participated in the festival, food was prepared and served in the temple during day and ceremonies continued till evening. We witnessed the 2 nd last and last day of the ceremony.

The drum beating during the festival

The last night of the ceremony has couple of interesting rituals with men in their traditional attire beating drums. The last night religious rituals were dedicated to snake worship. The arena was cleared and decorated, people settled around to observe the function and young girls (who haven’t hit puberty) were worshipped. It was interesting to witness the colorful religious ceremonies.

The onset of Pongal during the last day of the festival

The last day of the religious ceremony was the onset of Pongal. Early morning, women of the villages were ready with their utensils to prepare payasam (sweet rice) seated next to each other in the field, within the temple ground. Each of the women, had their own fire arrangement and ingredients to prepare the sweet dish together. The first offering from the preparation was given to almighty and rest was packed back home.

Get an Ayurvedic Massage

Kerala Ayurvedic Massage is one of the most popular massage, infused with herbal and medicinal oil. The medicinal properties of the massage help in reducing pain, boost immune system, enhance circulation and relaxes your system. There are a few Ayurvedic massage centers in Munroe Island that you can try to calm your nerves. However, the massage can be oily, and smell of the herb infused oil will longer than you think.

The traditional Kerala plate

Have a Sumptuous Traditional Meal

The food in Kerala can be a little confusing for a lot of people. However, if you are a fish person, the herb and spice covered fish is something that must not be missed. The fish is fried or roasted and slowly cooked in traditional spices, the taste and aroma spreading through the gastronomical senses. A traditional meal is served in the homestays or in couple of restaurants around Munroe Island. Everything is cooked in coconut oil; rice is fluffy and plump and there is a lot of sour in the curry. However, a traditional Keralite meal is a must to savor once.

Best Time to Visit Munroe Island

The best time to visit the place is during winters when the sun is calmer and not harsh. The season starts normally from November to February. However, if you wish to visit the temple festival, the best time to visit is the last week of January and first week of February. However, don’t forget to get your sunscreen and protective clothing, to save yourself the tan.

Among the routine traditional engagements, duck/ poultry farming and prawn breeding are common in all houses.

The idea of a community tourism scheme involving the collective operation of the nearby grama panchayats, centered around Munroe Island, has been mooted by the State Government. The scheme, to function under the motto ‘Ente gramam tourism souhridha gramam’ envisages public-private participation and hopefully would benefit both domestic and foreign tourists. In addition to accommodation facilities that are to come up under the development scheme, houses in the islands lying vacant will be utilized for the purpose.

Munroe Island is one of the main destinations of nature loving tourists. The fish and prawn farms of this place form an attraction to the visitors. The famous pilgrimage spot of Chittumala which houses the Durga Devi temple and the Kallada Appuppan church is around 25 km away from Kollam. The Kallada boat race is yet another attraction.

Ashtamudi backwaters

The term is indicative of the lake's topography, referring to its numerous branches. The lake is also called the gateway to the backwaters of Kerala. Ashtamudi Wetland is included in the list of wetlands of international importance, as defined by the Ramsar Convention for the conservation and sustainable utilization of wetlands.

Coconut groves and palm trees interspersed with small towns and villages are seen along both banks of the lake and its backwater canals. Kollam, noted for its cashew crops, is an important historic port town located on the right bank of the lake and boat cruises are operated by the Kollam Boat Club to Alappuzha, offering transport access to many other small towns and villages along this route, apart from the luxury houseboats or traditional kettuvallams which also operate in the lake. The boat journey is one long 8-hour trip, winding through lakes, canals, and water bound villages, giving a full view of the scenic beauty of Ashtamudi backwaters. This backwater tour from Kollam to Alappuzha happens to be the longest cruise in Kerala.

Chinese fishing nets used by local fishermen, called cheena vala in Malayalam, are a common sight along the waterway.

The lake and the city of Kollam on its banks and the Neendakara port at the confluence offer the means of transport for the State’s trade and commerce in cashew trading and marine industry. The lake is the source of livelihood for the Munroethuruthu-Kollam-Kerala-India local inhabitants by way of fishing, coconut husk retting for coir making and inland navigation services. The locals mainly include inland fisherfolk, coir workers and sand miners.

The lake and the life on its shores have also inspired many artists and writers. It has been the subject of the many poems of renowned poet Thirunalloor Karunakaran who was born and brought up on its banks.

Backwater tourism is one of the most attractive activities at the lake, offering undiluted pleasure to travelers. Accommodation is available at the houseboats, hotels, and resorts nearby according to budgetary requirements. The Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad or KSSP has presently started an intensive campaign aimed at conserving the wetland ecosystem involving active local participation.

Munroe island or mundrothuruthu.

Munroe Island or Mundrothuruthu is located in Kollam district of Kerala, at the confluence of Ashtamudi Lake and the Kallada River, 27 Km`s from Kollam town.

Munroe Island might sound exotic, yet it’s an arm’s reach away from us all. Named after an erstwhile British resident, the island, more popularly known as Munro Thuruth, is a cluster of eight small isles distributed on the Kallada River and Ashtamudi Lake in Kollam district.

The Yello un-tarred roads in the Thuruth frilled with acid green coconut trees and verdant vegetation offer a cooling effect to both the mind and eyes, and is an ideal spot for those looking for a place to relax. It’s cool and comfortable, and yet without much of the touristy hurry burry.

While it remains an untainted place, the daily packages offered by KTDC are attracting people in a steadily increasing number these days and the house boating facility has many takers.

The place is accessible by road, rail and inland water navigation, and is located about 70 km north of Thiruvananthapuram airport. The beauty is spread across a 13.4 sq km stretch. It is an ideal place for multiple relaxation activities ranging from bird watching to having a feel of the many traditional local practices – like coir weaving, fishing and prawn farming. You can also check out the famous kandal plants and another tiny island, Pathupara, nearby.

The isle takes on a festive look while Kallada Boat Race, one of the most famous snake boat races in the state, happens here 28 days after Onam. Famed as one of the best spots for watching country boat race, its enthusiasts rush to the island every year and find a proper space for them.

munroe island tourism

Munroe Island, which is actually a cluster of eight islands, is a hidden pearl in the backwaters. Each island is separated by small water channels and lakes. Munroe Island has located about 27 km from Kollam. The place is named in honour of Resident Colonel John Munroe, of the former princely state of Travancore, who is said to have integrated several backwater regions by digging canals.  Coconut farms on the canal shore, lagoons, and palm trees provide a different aura to Mundrothuruthu altogether. Some of this island’s main attractions are the narrow waterways, canal cruises and the famous Kallada Boat Race held here during the 10-day festival of Onam.    One can see the coir retting and weaving, prawns feeding and sand mining and fishing as they ride through the beautiful waters of Mundrothuruthu . It offers a unique and tranquil setting for a retreat far away from the constant chaos of modern life.

Travel To A Bygone Era In The Ancient Seaport Of Kollam

Kollam casts a spell.

K ollam, an ancient seaport, is noted for the scent of cashews and whole spices. In its environs, cottage industries, fishing, boat-building, and coir industries thrive side by side. Located in the southern part of Kerala, Kollam, once called Quilon, offers a quintessential trip to a bygone era.

In the 14th century, Chinese treasure ships with cast-bronze canons, square sails, and woodblock prints moored on the Kollam coast during heavy monsoons. Arab traveler Ibn Batuta recounts these ships scattered through a beautiful coastal town, then called Desinganadu, blessed with many green gardens and bustling bazaars.

An eight-hour boat journey on the backwaters of Ashtamudi takes you to the panoramic vistas of Neendakara fishing harbor, the boat building yards at Alumkadavu, the largest freshwater lakes at Sasthamkotta, and the five-acre hermitage of Mata Amritanandamayi.

An old Malayalam proverb states that anyone who has seen Kollam will not ache for his hometown anymore. Such is the sorcery of this unassuming coastal city.

Ashtamudi Backwaters

Floating cottages and Chinese fishing nets adorn either side of the octopus-shaped Ashtamudi Lake. A ride in a houseboat offers a view of mangrove forests, egrets descending onto still waters, serene rural life, and the retting of coconut husks. Wander through nearby lanes and you may stumble upon the two-century-old Thevally Palace, famous for its blend of Dutch and Portuguese architecture.

The nearby Ramsar Convention estuary is also a habitat for migratory birds and short-necked clam fisheries.

Thenmala Eco Tourism

At Thenmala, covered by dense forests and rubber and tea plantations, one can experience both wildlife and the spirit of adventure. The World Tourism Organization selected Thanmala as one of the world’s best eco-friendly projects. Trekking, boating, tenting, bird watching, mountain biking, rock climbing, rappelling, and river crossing are a few ways to enjoy India’s first planned ecotourism destination, including a sculpture garden and a culture zone. In a one-of-a-kind endeavor, visitors to Nakshatravanam (a nursery of trees considered sacred to the 27 constellations) can take home a tree sapling that corresponds to their birth star.

The eco-sanctuary offers tantalizing glimpses of wildlife like the giant Malabar squirrel leaping through the thick canopies of the Shenduruney Wildlife Sanctuary. The deer rehabilitation center is home to sambar, spotted, or barking deer.

Myths have a way of reinventing themselves. The Jatayupara Lake honors the sacrifice and splendor of Jatayu, a semi-vulture god, who lost a wing in a scuffle with Ravana, in a tale from the Ramayana. He is said to have rested on this rock until Lord Ram gave him water from a nearby lake. The lake that exists to date never dries up, even during a harsh summer.

Rajeev Anchal, a film and art director, has crafted a huge 60-foot-tall, 150-foot-wide, and 200-foot-long figure of Jatayu in a rock theme park on this hill. Trek to the top for a true bird’s-eye view 1,000 feet above sea level, to see eagles perched on treetops, scenic beauty, and cloudy weather.

Munroe Islands

Munroe Island is named after Colonel John Munroe, who pioneered canal construction and transformed the backwater experience in Kerala. A native of Scotland, Munroe served as the Diwan of Travancore. Munroe is credited with integrating several backwater regions by digging canals. While Indians strive to erase the memories of British rule by renaming English street names, Munroe Island stands testimony to his vision.

This quaint island, formed by the backwaters of Ashtamudi Lake and the Kallada River, is known for its mangrove forests and lagoons. You will find groups of men huddled in small yards around spinning wheels called Raattu, churning ropes from coir fiber.

Alumkadavu reminds houseboats

The famed Kettuvallam houseboats originated in Alumkadavu, a quaint little village with a distinctive scent of coir and wood. Initially conceived as a floating rice barge to carry heavy loads, fishermen used the Kettuvallam to navigate through palm-fringed canals in search of the night’s catch. Over the centuries, it became a traveler’s favorite medium for enjoying the tranquil splendor of the backwaters.

Rent a small vallom boat to enjoy this experience and paddle past cozy houses, whitewashed churches, and women on raattu (bicycle wheel spinners) whirling coconut fiber into ropes. You will witness boat-building yards where men in checkered lungis construct the finest boats without hammering a single nail. They tie wooden planks together with coir, paint them in fish oil, and glue them using dark resin obtained from boiling cashews.

Punalur Hanging Bridge

The beautiful town of Punalur, located on the eastern fringes of Kollam district, is the municipal headquarters of Pathanapuram Taluk. It is located on the Kollam-Shencottah-Thenkasi highway and is the main transit point for goods from southern Kerala to Tamil Nadu due to its proximity to the state border. It also serves as a transit point for tourists visiting major picnic spots and pilgrim centers in its vicinity. Punalur is renowned for its paper mill, established in 1888 by the British. It functioned until 1984 but was later closed.

The highlight of Punalur is its unique Hanging Bridge, one of its kind in South India. Albert Henry constructed it in 1877 across the Kallada River. The bridge has three spans, is 400 meters long, and took six years to build. It is noted for the temples of Ayyappa, Krishna, Siva, and Dev.

Sasthamkotta, the Queen of the Lakes

Another spot in the Kollam district that stands out for its distinct charm is Sasthamkotta, the largest freshwater lake in Kerala, situated 29 km from the town. The place owes its name, Sasthamkotta, to the Lord Sastha Temple, an important pilgrim center. The monkeys of Sasthamkotta that colonize the towering trees are believed to be the loyal followers of the ruling deity, the Dharmasastha. A boat ride through this Queen of Lakes’s tranquil waters can refresh your soul.
