A holiday to Thailand offers the perfect introduction to Southeast Asia, a place both exotic and familiar.

Bangkok, most people’s gateway to Thailand, is a city of contrasts; tranquil golden temples and gleaming skyscrapers rubbing shoulders with bustling markets and mega malls. Within easy reach of the capital, Kanchanaburi offers lush scenery and haunting reminders of World War II, whilst the former royal capital Ayutthaya’s impressive ruins provide a fascinating window into a bygone era.

To the north Chiang Mai is Thailand’s cultural capital and enjoys a spectacular location amidst jungle clad hills. Charmingly cosmopolitan, the ancient city walls and moats encircle historic temples, excellent museums, cafes, restaurants and boutique shops.

Further north still the once infamous Golden Triangle region is one of the most ethnically diverse provinces in Thailand. The views are also sensational; lush rice terraces, hills scattered with orchids and the mountains of Myanmar and Laos visible in the distance.

Lastly don't forget the hundreds of beautiful beaches that dot the islands of the south - the perfect place to relax after your Thailand adventure.

Frequently asked questions, are all tours escorted.

A number of our tours are escorted, however, most tours also have ‘free time’ where you can explore at your own pace and leisure. We would advise you to check individual itineraries as some tours may differ, or call our Destination Specialists for advice.

Is it safe to explore Thailand by yourself?

British nationals make over one million visits to Thailand every year. Most visits are trouble-free. Make sure your travel insurance covers you for any adventure activities you’ll be doing. Only use fully licensed and insured operators, and satisfy yourself that the company is using up-to-date equipment before taking part.

Are my meals and transfers included in the tour price?

Please check individual itinerary details as board basis and transfers may vary. This information should be available on each individual tour detail page but if you are unsure, please don’t hesitate to call our Destination Specialists on 01293 832455 and they can advise you further.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Thailand?

Major credit cards are widely accepted by large shops, hotels and restaurants. However, they may not be accepted by small family-run restaurants, market stalls or in remote towns and rural areas. Always ensure you carry enough cash for purchases, since credit cards aren’t always an option everywhere in Thailand . Cash machines are found widely throughout Thailand, so withdrawing cash shouldn’t be problematic in most areas. Again, some smaller villages and rural areas may not have access to cash machines, so prepare for this before venturing too far from a city or major town.

What should I pack to go to Thailand?

It’s easy to get carried away with your packing list when you’re taking a trip to such an exotic country. Don’t forget a 220-240 AC voltage or universal plug adaptor, mosquito repellent, earplugs, a waterproof bag (if you’re visiting during rainy season or want to go on a boat trip), and comfortable shoes for all the exploring you’ll be doing. Don’t, under any circumstances, forget to organise travel insurance before you go.

Why you’ll love Thailand…

Thailand is a country of enthralling experiences. Its paradise islands offer warm, clear waters and golden beaches bordered by laidback communities. Inland you’ll find fascinating history, hill tribe villages and rainforests garlanded in mist. Thai cities are bustling with market-sellers and tuk-tuks weaving through traffic. Buddha statues smile and temples sparkle. Your only dilemma is what to see and where to go next. Our Destination Specialists will help you plan your trip, but take a look at these suggestions.

  • Sample the street food, temples and floating markets of Bangkok
  • The tranquil forests, ancient traditions and night markets of Chiang Mai
  • The laidback paradise of Koh Samet, a mere two hours from Bangkok
  • Out-of-this-world diving and snorkelling and jungle hiking of Koh Tao
  • Koh Samui for beach life, bars and restaurants serving world-class Thai cuisine
  • The seclusion and spa resorts of Koh Phangan, contrasted with full moon parties
  • Koh Chang’s deserted beaches, Sea Gypsies, and cycling tours through shady jungle forests
  • The unspoilt hideaway with waterfalls of Khao Lak and a chance to meet elephants
  • Go to Phuket if you seek diving, temples and colourful nightlife
  • Visit Phi Phi for its iconic shots of limestone karsts rising from the sea
  • Try Krabi for island-hopping, rock climbing and adrenaline-fuelled activities
  • Koh Yao Noi is ideal for a romantic getaway and dramatic marine vistas

Did you know…

1. Thai is the official language of Thailand, but in the more popular regions and large cities, English is widely understood. We would suggest, however, taking a phrasebook if you intend to travel even a little off the beaten track.

2. Try not to shake hands. The Thai way of greeting is called ‘the wai’. It consists of a slight bow with the palms pressed together, in a prayer-like fashion. Men should say ‘sawadee-krap’ while women should say ‘sawadee-kah’. Both mean ‘hello’.

3. Thailand is an incredibly hospitable country and beach-life here is very accepting. However be respectful of Thai customs, religion and culture and particularly their monarchy, for whom they have great respect. Be sure to dress respectfully when entering places of worship, with everywhere between your shoulders and knees covered.

Here, you will experience illuminated shopping centres and architect-designed skyscrapers, located side by side with small shops and shiny temples; the aromas from the many street kitchens mixing with the fumes from the dense traffic, which is slowly being overtaken by the many boats on the canals; and the orange-clad monks zigzagging between busy business people, schoolchildren and tourists in the city streets.

In Bangkok, you will find plenty of contrasts between old and traditional, and new and contemporary in one beautiful union.

Discover sights such as:

  • The royal Grand Palace , one of Bangkok’s biggest attractions. The palace, which was completed in 1782, was the king’s home for 150 years. The palace houses Thailand’s most sacred Buddha statue, made from one huge piece of shining green jade.
  • In Bang Yai , you will experience a very different Bangkok, with narrow streets and not as much traffic as in the city centre. Visit Bangkok’s second largest reclining Buddha at Wat Bang Yai. (The biggest is at Wat Pho).
  • The large network of waterways, or “klongs” . Sail in a traditional Thai long-tail boat, and experience Bangkok from the water, where you will see that buildings face the water rather than the streets, showing just how important the canals are.
  • One of Bangkok’s countless markets , where you can buy clothes and souvenirs or eat at the street kitchens. Visit, for example, the Chatuchak market , which has more than 15,000 stalls and is one of the biggest weekend markets in the world, or one of the many floating markets , which, as the name suggests, take place on the water.
  • Well tucked away across the Chao Phraya River, you can experience an untouched corner of Bangkok, Bang Kra Jao , which can only be reached by boat. Discover green, undisturbed nature with banana palms, waterfalls and thick bamboo. Go on a scenic bike ride around the villages, meet the smiling locals and catch a glimpse of the Bangkok skyline in the background.

Chiang Mai is Thailand’s second largest city where, despite its size, you will find a peaceful and extremely charming city with an interesting cultural background.

From 1296 to 1768, Chiang Mai was the capital of the Lanna Kingdom, which extended to the present-day Laos. The legacy of the Lanna Kingdom still remains, in the local cuisine, for example.

In and around Chiang Mai, you can:

  • See northern Thailand’s beautiful and extremely sacred temple Wat Phra That Doi Suthep , located on a mountainside in Doi Pui National Park. Doi Suthep is a stunning golden pagoda from 1383 containing relics of Buddha. From the temple, there is a beautiful view over Chiang Mai.
  • Visit one of Chiang Mai’s many markets , such as Chiang Mai’s famous night market, where locals and visitors gather to shop or dine at one of the many street kitchens.
  • Experience Doi Inthanon National Park , which among other things is home to Thailand’s highest mountain (2,565 AMSL). Look forward to discovering the stunning, wild scenery on a hike along the Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail, for example, where one of Northern Thailand’s most beautiful panoramic views awaits you.

Beach holiday in Thailand

In southern Thailand, there is ample opportunity to round off your tour with a beach holiday at one of Thailand’s beautiful beaches, either on the mainland or on one of the fabulous islands.

Under our practical information, you can read more about the best time to visit the various beach holiday destinations.

Beach holiday in the Gulf of Thailand (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan)

Enjoy a beach holiday in the Gulf of Thailand on the eastern side of Thailand and experience some of Thailand’s most popular beach holiday islands such as Koh Samui or Koh Phangan.

It has everything you dream of in a beach holiday destination: beautiful, long sandy beaches, turquoise-blue waters and coconut palms. Laze at the water’s edge, go snorkelling among vibrant, colourful fish and hike through the lush jungle with waterfalls and lookout points!

Beach holiday by the Andaman Sea (Phuket, Khao Lak, Koh Lanta, Koh Ngai, Koh Mook)

On the western side of Thailand, by the Andaman Sea, you will also find some unique beach holiday areas.

This is where the holiday paradise Phuket, Thailand’s largest island, is located, with its impressive golden sand and shady palm trees. Enjoy your holiday on the beach or head off on an excursion to, for example, Phang Nga Bay, which is characterised by its impressive limestone cliffs jutting vertically from the emerald green waters.

Other experiences in Thailand

Thailand offers a whole host of experiences, in addition to those mentioned above.

In Thailand, you can, for example, experience the following:

  • The River Kwai and the surrounding area , where you spend the night at a “flotel” – a hotel built on a raft on the River Kwai. Discover the Death Railway, built from Thailand to Myanmar during World War II. It took 18 months to build the 415-km stretch, and more than 100,000 men died in the process. Hell fire Pass was one of the hardest places to build on the route.
  • North of Chiang Mai, near the border with Myanmar and Laos, is Chiang Rai . The area, which is known as The Golden Triangle, was once at the centre of the opium trade. The scenery here is unique, with valleys, mountains and rainforest, as well as interesting villages and ethnic mountain tribes. Visit the beautiful, sacred temple Wat Phra Kaew and sail on the Mekong River, which marks the border with Laos.
  • The ChangChill Elephant Sanctuary , where you gain an insight into the lives of the mighty giants. They live a peaceful life here, and as a visitor, you can observe them from a distance, e.g. when they take mud baths or socialise with each other. The sanctuary opened in 2017 in collaboration with World Animal Protection.
  • Khao Sok National Park , which is one of Thailand’s largest and most scenic national parks. Discover ancient, undisturbed rainforest where you can encounter the local wildlife, including macaques, and sail on the expansive Cheow Lan Lake, and experience the beautiful scenery from the water.
  • The historic ruin city of Ayutthaya , which was the capital from 1350 to 1767. The park itself offers some impressive temples and ruins, including the UNESCO-listed Wat Phra Sri Sanphet. Take a boat trip around the historic park and watch the sun set over the impressive Wat Chai Wattanaram, which some find reminiscent of Angkor Wat in Cambodia.

The great thing about Thailand is it’s usually quite hot all year round, so it’s great to go at any time. There is a slightly higher chance of rain around July - November, however it usually only rains for an hour or so which can be a nice relief from the heat. Visiting from November - June may be a little cooler, however you’ll likely experience less rain and humidity.

This trip gives a well paced overview of central North Thailand. G Adventure organized the trip well and their travel manager Sek was amazing.
I had an amazing time with G Adventures! The itinerary was perfect; there was a lot to do and see, but it wasn't overwhelming and there was a lot of free time provided. My guide, Prem, was one of the sweetest, loveliest people I've ever met! She is brilliant at her job, and brings so much enthusiasm to work. She is extremely knowledgeable, and was always willing to share her knowledge with the group. Miss her so much already!

I did the 18 day Thai Intro tour and it was worth every penny. We had the most amazing group leader named Dan who made the trip an unforgettable experience. He was so knowledgeable about Thailand and the culture. He also made sure everyone was well looked after and made it his priority to ensure everyone was having a good time. I could not recommend this tour more. So much crammed into 18 days. An experience that will be with you for life. Highly recommend!
I've just finished Thai Intro 18 days and it truly was the trip on my lifetime. The organization and all the fun and exciting activities were fantastic. Such a great value for money. Our group leader Dan W. was the best person we could have asked for to show us the beauty and culture of this incredible country. His knowledge (I just loved all the facts he told us!), kindness and passion was what really made the whole trip even more special- such an asset to this company. Not to forget Matt who joined us along the way and was such a positive and fun addition to our already great group. They helped me to face and overcome my fears with such an ease and confidence, and for that, I will be forever grateful to both of them. Could not recommend enough.

This was my first trip with Tru Travels and first ever group tour in general and I had the best time! Can’t thank Mickey enough for making sure we were all happy, going above and beyond to provide all the information we needed and making sure we had the time of our lives even through the lows. You can tell he really loves his job and is somehow always happy! I loved the combination of doing the north and south of Thailand, there was always a good balance of having lots of activities to do and things to see as well being able to wind down and relax. I’ll never forget my time in Thailand and all the amazing people I got to meet! Would 100% book another tour with Tru Travels.
Taro our tour guide was first class. Made the trip for me and my son can’t praise him high enough. Miss communication with admin and me in emails regarding which hotels we would be staying in on the trip were an issue at the beginning of the tour which I wasnt happy about. The tour itself was great. Once in a life time trip for us

I LOVED my trip to Thailand! Only complaint is I wish I could have stayed longer. All the excursions were well thought out and were clearly chosen with purpose. I felt like I got an authentic taste of Thailand, but the best part of my trip was the people! My group got along right away with the help of our tour leaders, Jamie and Jonny! They were amazing at making everyone feel included and heard. Both of them cultivated a wonderful environment for each of us to feel like we could be ourselves while exploring Thailand. They each were equally professional and fun! Never felt unsafe at any point during our travels. If you can take a trip with either Jamie or Jonny, DO IT!! They are amazing :) I made some life long friends and memories on this trip, so if you are unsure whether you should go, take the leap and do it, you won’t regret it!!
Hi there travelers! Are you thinking of going to to Thailand with feelfree? Stop thinking and start booking! I was quite nervous to spend 2 weeks in a foreign country with strangers, but from day 1 we all became friends. Thailand is an amazing country and feelfree is an amazing travel company. Everyday we visited beautiful places and did extraordinary activities. Our guide Jonny was so passionate and caring. Together with Jamie they made sure we all had the time of our lives! Highly recommend!

Intrepid Travel

Intrepid Travel

  • Excellent - 11,667 reviews for Thailand tours
I would not recommend this trip to anyone. Yes, we knew before we purchased the tour, from Itinerary, that for 15 days duration of this tour, there will be only 10 breakfasts, 3 lunches and no dinner served, but we did not know that, another Intrepid "invention" called, "public bus" transportation (3x) will be in practice very long and there will be very hard to find a place to eat, especially breakfast next day!!! In fact, your organization included 5 full days with no meals!!! It was 2 days in Bangkok and one day in Khao Sok, Kuala Lumpur and Melaka. In Kuala Lumpur for example we had to wander 45 minutes thru the neighborhood of our hotel in order to find a decent place to have a breakfast. In another day, from Melaka to Singapore, our guide told us, the night before, that because of very early schedule for the public bus we have to skip our breakfast which was awaiting at the hotel next morning. After our protest our guide "arranged" early breakfast but the service room was not ready with cold coffee and the toaster oven not working! All three "public bus" transportation, in practice, were very long and exhaustive, due to traffic or long time spent on border crossing, and frustrating to us due to a lack of even basic food not available on food stands on the route. In addition, the one day trip to Baan Mod Tanoy village turned to be another small disaster. The village huts were literally sitting in the middle of huge garbage dump where we supposed to clean the beach …We did not take any cleaning action there for obvious reasons. Our guide seamed to be quite often frustrated with our basic, in reality, demands regarding meals and, paid by Intrepid, afternoon activities which quite often did not exist! The most common guide's message to us could be freely translated, in short, as: "it is what it is and be happy with what you have". In overall, I doubt I will go with, or suggest to my friends to book a trip with, Intrepid in any time soon!!!
The trip has a good itinerary in Thailand but the part in Malaysia has very bad logistics. Hotels in Thailand were adequate, except one in Ao Nang (Ibis, rather dirty with very poorly designed rooms). Visit to the Baan Mod Tanoy village on the last day in Thailand was something that needs to change. Walk thru the village was maybe educational but village itself was littered with garbage everywhere – in front of houses and both side of the streets. By the look of discarded pop cans, candy and chips wrappers it wasn’t a poor village. We were told we have to participate in program (apparently going for three years) where tourists walk on a beach and pick up garbage. It was noon, 34C and one of us was 83 years old. We refused, suggesting that based on the garbage littering the village the program obviously doesn’t work. As for Malaysia – we visited three cities and due to the fact that we drove from one city to the other on a highway with palm tree forests on both sides we really didn’t see much of the countryside. We were transported by public transport and that was very unpleasant and time wasting. The worst was trip from Penang to Kuala Lumpur that took from 8 am (starting from hotel with so horrible breakfast that it wasn’t included, and local bars didn’t open until 8 am (??) to 4:45 pm with no break for lunch. It was: van to transit station, bus with one bathroom break, van to the hotel. We wasted the whole day with nothing but palm trees to see. Why didn’t we fly?? The day before last we left our hotel at 6:30 am (no chance for breakfast, after complaining we got some cold coffee and toast). Again transferring – van, public bus, and this time Grab/Uber in Singapore that originally were going to order and pay for ourselves! The guide eventually gave us Singapore dollars and called taxis, but it took a long time to sort out. This should be organized better. We were mostly older group that needs to take medication in the morning with food and those few days in Malaysia made it very difficult. Also transferring our luggage in and out of van/bus/van was hard for some. Not to mention that at time of post Covid and bird flu in Asia putting us three times on public bus was not very safe. I do not recommend this trip, itinerary is deceiving. Before this trip we took one thru Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand with GAdventures and we didn’t have those kind of problems with transportation and meals.

This tour was great but had a couple flaws. As the tourist on this trip, I got a little burned out on the amount of walk through discussions and explanations of the temples visited (23 total). I would have enjoyed them more if there was a free roam granted at all of them. If there are questions, then the guides should be able to be provide asked answers. I was bored by the 5th temple and ready to leave. Also, it should be mentioned a month before the trip of how many of these temples require "conservative" clothing. The temples/mausoleums visited were not all the same as noted in the tour itinerary. For a 19 day tour it is only fair that the traveler is made aware of the proper clothing to pack especially when the weather is very warm, With that said, there were some great destinations visited. The meals provided (mostly lunch) were really good. To future travelers, be aware that in this tour, you will have 5-10 tour guides, and about 7-10 different drivers, all of who "appreciate" at least a $5-$10 /day tip. Have shirts that cover your shoulders, and bottoms that cover your knees for the days that you go to temples.
This 6-day thailand pattaya tour is the best! Our tour guide is Danny. He is extremely knowledgeable and made sure that we were always well taken care of. Probably the best tour guide we've ever had.. Overall, we loved this trip and we would highly recommend this trip.

Our days in Vietnam and Cambodia were amazing! All the tours within these 2 countries were incredible and very enjoyable, Our tour guides in Vietnam, Larry, Felix and Anthony spoke English very well and were very helpful in solving any issues we had. Halong Bay and Lan Ha bay was a site to behold. Kayaking, swimming, fishing , and kareoke were very enjoyable while on the La Pandora cruise. The cooking lesson needs to be improved and not be given by the tour guide. Very disappointing that Taichi was cancelled. The Bavi Eco tour was excellent and cooking lesson with Mrs Chin was fun and well worth it. The cycling component in of the tours were very enjoyable. Cambodia was another unforgettable experience. We were on a private tour with just my friend and I and we couldn't ask for a better guide in Mr, Sok Vanna (we called him Vanna as he explained this to us). He was very knowledgeable about the sites we visited and he was willing to make changes to our schedule as we requested. He is a very humble guy and decent. I was not impressed with Thailand as we only had half a day to tour a temple and we were left on our own device the next day to entertain ourselves. I didn't enjoy being in Bangkok as it was full of high rises. Being out of the city would have been a better option. Regarding our guide, he is a very intelligent man but he was not a good fit for us. His mastery of the English language could have been better. We found that we had to ask questions instead
It was amazing, top organizing. the tour guides were all amazing

Jay Jay and Morgan were great tour guides! My husband and I requested private accommodations the first day of the tour (for a separate upgraded cost, of course) and they made those arrangements for us seamlessly. They also had numerous recommendations for food and activities on the days we had free time, which was very helpful. We loved this tour and enjoyed our time immensely!
TERRIBLE SERVICE- if I could give 0 stars I would! I was looking forward to a lovely tour of Thailand as it seems like a rather beautiful country to explore. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, I requested to change the dates of my tour which fell to death ears. I was asked to pay an additional charge to change dates to later this year which is outrageous considering the low cost of living and budget hostels/ hotels booked. All in all save your money and book with another company that appreciates you as a consumer.

Lots of history and learning about temples. It was a good tour
We saw so much in these 21 days. The hotels were all good. The communication from the office was excellent and when we did have a minor issue it was remedied immediately. We took 5 flights on this tour and all our transfers were punctual and well organized. We cannot fault the organization of Bravo Indochina Tours. Most of the local guides were excellent but there were one or two who did not have a good enough grasp of the English language to do a tour in English. The included meals were excellent, and all activities were organized extremely well. We would highly recommend Bravo Indochina Tours and a big shout out to Ha Nguyen who was always there for us. Thank you for making this a very special trip for us.

The tour guides during this tour are absolutely fantastic. They completely saved our trip and gave us an amazing experience. They work so tirelessly to ensure you have an amazing time. The booking company is less than perfect. They guarantee 3 star hotel stays, but clearly choose the cheapest venues possible. We had to change our hotel twice due to not having hot water. One hotel had also clearly built our room over the property cesspool and the smell was awful. I also do not reccomend 3 days at Kaeng Kratchen. We completed our itinerary there in half a day. Our guide came up with alternate plans for us. The tour company was unwilling to alter our plan, or change our booking, even though they incorrectly planned that itinerary. The company did change our room for one of the terrible hotels, but would have rather spent the time used for this towards enjoying our vacation. If you book with this company really investigate the hot wet l bookings, and do not spend the allotted time at Kaeng Kratchen.
It was one of the best memories in my trip,m and I really appreciate the service. I wood like to utilize again.

No travel is risk-free in times like these, where COVID-19 is still present. Over the last two years, countries imposed travel restrictions and entry requirements to help monitor and reduce the spread of Covid around the world.

Each country was different, and many travelers found the quickly shifting rules and regulations confusing. Thailand was no exception. Though slow to reduce its strict entry requirements, Thailand has made big changes since the start of 2022. Its largest change has been implemented at the of July and travel is now almost as easy as it was pre-covid.

These are the major changes that will affect travelers from July 1:

  • Foreigners do not need to show proof of Covid Insurance.
  • All mandatory hotel quarantine has been removed.
  • Thailand Pass is no longer required for foreign travelers entering Thailand.
  • Vaccinated travelers do not need to provide proof of vaccination before arriving.
  • Unvaccinated travelers (including children traveling with unvaccinated parents) will need to complete an RT-PCR or Professional Antigen Test (Pro-ATK) test 72 hours before departing for Thailand. Proof does not need to be uploaded before traveling.
  • Airlines and Thai Immigration will do random checks to confirm travelers meet Covid prevention requirements (vaccination certificate or Covid test).
  • Wearing masks is no longer compulsory.
  • The TM6 arrival card has been temporarily removed when entering Thailand.

This is great news for British citizens once again looking to visit the beautiful tropics of Thailand. July 1 welcomes Brits back at the height of summer, and Thailand locals are preparing to once again welcome travelers.

Covid has not disappeared, so people still need to be responsible when traveling. If you are British and looking to escape after so long in isolation, there are still a few things you need to know to help create a worry-free holiday.

Thailand Visas for UK Citizens

Visa exemption for uk citizens.

UK passport holders may travel to Thailand without a visa as long as it is for the purpose of tourism. They may stay for a maximum of 30 days through the Visa Exemption Program . You may extend your permit to stay for a further 30 days at any local immigration office.

If you need to stay in Thailand longer than the Visa Exemption or are traveling for a purpose other than tourism, Siam Legal International law firm offers various Thailand Visa services for travelers from the UK. You may check our services through our website at: https://uk.siam-legal.com/thailand-visa/

Long Term Visas for Brits

Tourist visa and special tourist visa (stv).

Foreigners may also apply for a Tourist Visa from the Thai embassy or consulate. There is the normal 60-day tourist visa that can be extended for additional 30 days, and the 90-day Special Tourist Visa (STV), which can be extended for two 90-day visa extensions at the local immigration office. There are certain requirements needed for the STV, but it allows a visitor to stay in Thailand for a potential 9 months. The STV will be available until September 2022.

Thai Elite Visa

If you wish to make Thailand easily accessible for many years to come or are perhaps thinking of relocating permanently, it is worth having a look at the Thai Elite Visa.

The Thai Elite Visa allows British citizens to live in Thailand for 5, 10, or even 20 years. Thai Elite members do not need to worry about some of the eligibility criteria that are needed when applying for other long-term visas.

The Thai Elite visa is exclusive and offers a host of benefits to holders. If you want to enjoy “Thai life” for the long term, you can read more about the Thai Elite Visa.

Non-Immigrant Visa

Foreigners may also apply for a wide range of non-immigrant visas:

  • Non-immigrant B Visa – for conducting business or employment
  • Non-immigrant O visa – for visiting Thai spouse and family
  • Non-immigrant ED visa – for students of recognized institutions in Thailand and their Parents or Legal guardian
  • Non-immigrant O retirement visa – for those who wish to retire in Thailand
  • Non-immigrant OA and OX visa – for those who wish to obtain a Thailand retirement visa for long stay (it differs from type O visa)

The above visas can be organized with a local Thai Embassy or Consulate in Britain. The paperwork can be quite involved, but there are companies that can help.

As mentioned above, Siam Legal International is a professional company who have helped world travelers apply for Thai long-term visas over the years. They are well versed in Thai Immigration policies and procedures. If you would like to simplify your long-term stay in Thailand, you can contact one of their visa experts.

Entering Thailand from Britain after July 1

As noted above, Thailand Pass is no longer required from July 1. British travelers do not need to register, provide documents, or seek approval before traveling to Thailand. How British visitor enters Thailand will still depend on their vaccination status, so there are a few things to do.

Vaccinated Travellers – Vaccinated travelers from Britain do not need to complete any Covid tests before leaving their country. They will need to have a copy of their vaccination certificate on hand. Children under 18 who are traveling with vaccinated parents do not need to complete any RT-PCR or Pro-ATK test before departing.

Unvaccinated Travellers – Before coming to Thailand, unvaccinated travelers will need to complete an RT-PCR or Professional Antigen (Pro-ATK) test through a clinic or medical professional. The test result must be issued within 72 hours before departing the UK.

An ATK (RAT) home test is not acceptable. Children under 18 who are traveling with unvaccinated parents also need to complete a test.

Airlines and Immigration will conduct random checks of passengers to confirm Covid requirements are met. It is best to have your Vaccination or Covid test Certificate available to show.

Flights to Thailand from the UK

The most popular direct trip from the United Kingdom to Thailand is from London to Bangkok, which takes roughly 12 hours and 15 minutes and lands at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport or Phuket International Airport if the flight is a direct flight.

Airlines that fly directly to Thailand include:

  • British Airways
  • Thai Airways

For indirect flights:

  • Qatar Airways
  • Emirates Airline
  • Malaysia Airlines
  • Singapore Airlines

Previously, if you landed in Bangkok and wanted to transit domestically you were required to complete Test & Go at your point of entry, or board a “sealed flight”. This is no longer the case. With the removal of Test & Go, Sandbox, and mandatory quarantine, UK citizens can land at any international airport in Thailand and transit domestically right away.

Most international airlines follow the rules of the arrival country. If you are transiting through another country, it is best to check with the airline if you need to complete any tests for that country. When landing in Thailand, you can purchase an ATK self-test at airports, pharmacies, and most convenient stores.

Accommodation in Thailand

Everyone needs somewhere to stay after a long flight. After July 1st, all visitors are welcome to book any accommodation. British holiday-makers do not need SHA+ hotels or quarantine packages. There is no need to provide any proof of accommodation, and most hotels have removed their “Quarantine Packages” from their websites.

To find and compare the best hotels available in Thailand, visit Agoda . They allow free booking and cancellation, confirm bookings with hotels, and have their web page is easy to navigate and compare hotels.

Organize some Travel Insurance

Travel Insurance is always a hot topic. It has become synonymous with “Covid”. The fact is that from July 1, Thailand does not require foreign visitors to have insurance with Covid cover. Travelers do not need to provide any proof of insurance in order to enter Thailand.

Before Covid, seasoned travelers understood the benefits of comprehensive travel insurance. Covid has not changed this. Though travel restrictions have eased, Covid is still a problem and the last thing British travelers wants is to have their holiday cut short, or be forced to quarantine while they recover from Covid.

The most important thing to know about insurance is that foreign travelers are not eligible for any form of free medical care in Thailand. No matter the circumstance, if a UK citizen needs medical attention, they will need to pay for it. Depending on the severity, this could amount to thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket expenses.

Insurance is one of those things that is better to have and not need than need and not have. Your travel insurance doesn’t just cover Covid. Comprehensive travel insurance will also cover:

  • Medical emergencies
  • Personal injury & accidents
  • Missed or delayed flights
  • Damage to belongings
  • Loss of luggage

There are multiple reasons to protect yourself when traveling. Many visitors to Thailand choose AXA Insurance Thailand. It is a trusted company that offers comprehensive insurance to travelers from around the world. Their policies are straightforward with good coverage.

Some advantages to AXA Insurance are:

  • Recognized and trusted by Thai authorities and medical facilities.
  • Easy to apply online and approved in minutes.
  • Competitive pricing and cover.
  • Has no 14-day waiting period and covers Covid-related incidents, including asymptomatic cases.
  • Provides customers with a convenient 1-Page Certificate of insurance. This certificate contains all relevant information needed by medical professionals or if making a claim.

To see the cover offered and organize your insurance to Thailand in minutes. Visit AXA Thailand.

Arriving in Thailand – Best Practices

So what can you expect when landing in Thailand? Besides beautiful weather, delicious food, white beaches, and mountains with elephants, British travelers can expect a friendly welcome.

There are things to know while in Thailand. Though many of these things are not mandatory, you find that many of the locals are still aware that Covid can occur if not careful.

Wearing Masks

From July 1st, masks are no longer compulsory but still recommended when in public places. You see many Thai people (and visitors) still wear masks when out and about. It is recommended to wear a mask when visiting restaurants or public venues. You will not get in trouble if you don’t wear a mask, but it is a case of “do as the locals do”. It is about respect and consideration.

TM6 Arrival Cards

The Thai government has temporarily removed the need for visitors to complete the blue arrival card known as TM6. Their aim is to ease congestion at airports and remove another form that holidaymakers need to complete. This initiative is in a testing phase, but it is hoped that the removal of TM6 will be successful and the change will become permanent.

Paperwork to Prepare

Though Thailand Pass is removed, and travelers do not need to provide a proof before entry, it is best to prepare a few documents before arriving.

  • Certificate of Insurance
  • Vaccination certificate (vaccinated travelers)
  • 72-hour RT-PCR or Pro-ATK test result (unvaccinated)
  • Covid-19 recovery certificate (if previously tested positive)

This will speed up your processing time before leaving your country, or if asked to provide vaccination or testing proof in a random check. These documents can be presented in digital form, but airlines, Immigration, and Health Officers will appreciate the extra effort if you print them.

Foreign Secretary pushes for closer cooperation with Thailand

David Cameron heads to Thailand, one of the biggest economies in south-east Asia, for his first visit as Foreign Secretary to the Indo-Pacific region.

thailand tours from uk

  • the Foreign Secretary travels to Thailand on his first visit to the Indo-Pacific region.
  • he will visit fighter jets built with British components and promote defence exports worth over £300 million
  • he will agree a new Strategic Partnership with Prime Minister Srettha and the Foreign Minister, deepening economic and security ties and paving the way to closer cooperation between the UK and Thailand

The Foreign Secretary will travel to Thailand today (Wednesday 20 March) to drive forward the UK’s partnership with the one of the biggest economies in south-east Asia.

He will look to bolster even closer cooperation through a range of joint priorities including defence, regional security and stability, science and technology, the economy and trade.

The UK and Thailand’s trading relationship is worth around £6 billion annually, and the Foreign Secretary will use his visit to explore ways to strengthen these ties to boost both the UK and Thai economies.

Thailand is an important UK security partner, particularly on advancing peace and reconciliation in Myanmar and protecting international law and regional cooperation. With over half of world trade passing through the Indo-Pacific region, it is also vital to work with Thailand on maritime security to ensure reliable access to the goods the UK wants and needs.

The Foreign Secretary, David Cameron said:

South-east Asia is a commercial powerhouse and Thailand is one of the biggest economies of the lot. Working with countries in this region means jobs and growth back here in the UK.     Thailand is a founding member of ASEAN and an influential player across the Indo-Pacific region. We will continue to work with them to address shared global challenges that affect us all – including the impacts of climate change, rapid technological development, and threats to global health.

The Foreign Secretary will see first-hand the deepening UK-Thailand defence partnership on a visit to a military airbase, where he will showcase UK support for the Gripen aircraft campaign.

The Gripen is a collaboration between the UK, Sweden and the US, with companies across the UK supplying up to 40% of the components for the aircraft. The success of the campaign would not only strengthen the Royal Thai Air Force but would also see an injection of £350 million into the UK economy, creating and supporting jobs from Bournemouth to Manchester.

Three years ago, the UK delivered almost half a million COVID vaccines to Thailand. Since then, UK and Thai researchers have boosted efforts to deliver fair and timely access to affordable and high-quality vaccines through the recently announced UK-South East Asia Vaccine Manufacturing Research Hub.

The Foreign Secretary will meet researchers from this partnership and other inventors, working on challenges from AI to engineering biology, on a visit to a university. There, he will highlight the ambition of the International Science Partnership Fund worth £337 million globally to enable scientific collaboration between UK and Thai researchers and innovators to solve shared global challenges and foster prosperity. Key projects include tackling some of the world’s deadliest diseases, building food security networks and developing clean energy systems.

He will also announce the launch of a UK Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions (UK PACT) Thailand Country Fund worth up to £6 million to boost green growth. This will support sustainable transport, green finance and carbon pricing in Thailand.

David Cameron will sign the UK-Thailand Strategic Partnership Roadmap to strengthen the relationship on defence, climate and energy, trade and investment, agriculture, digital and tech, health and education ahead of next year’s 170-year anniversary of UK-Thai diplomatic relations.

Following his visit to Thailand, the Foreign Secretary will head to Australia for the annual Australia-UK Minister Consultations (AUKMIN).

Authorities in Thailand arrested two New Zealand tourists and revoked their visas after they attacked a police officer .

Immigration authorities banned brothers Hamish Day, 36, and Oscar Day, 38, from ever returning to Thailand . Thai news outlet Bangkok Post reported that the brothers have been charged with offences including robbery, causing physical harm to an on-duty officer , attempted bribery, and driving a motorcycle without a licence .

Police said traffic officer Somsak Noo-iat on Saturday spotted the men speeding on their motorbikes. They tried to speed away after Mr Somsak tried to stop them.

They went on to offer a bribe to the officer, who tried to film the two men on his phone. After this, the brothers allegedly wrestled Mr Somsak to the ground and took his gun.

The weapon was fired, but nobody was shot. The police chief also said that one of the brothers is a mixed martial arts fighter.

Video of the incident has gone viral online, where onlookers can be heard shouting at them to stop. Both brothers have denied all charges and the police said on Monday they would ask the court for permission to deny their release on bail.

Mr Somsak’s supervisor and Chalong police chief Ekkarat Plaiduang said Mr Somsak was injured but recovering well.

Phuket governor, Sophon Suwannarat, spoke at a press conference on Monday, condemning the brothers’ behaviour as “intolerable”.

"The behaviour was improper and illegal,“ Mr Sophon said, and added that ”serious action“ would be taken to “protect the tourism atmosphere of Phuket”.

The brothers’ father, Laurence Day, told New Zealand Herald : “The family is distraught. We’re praying for a good outcome. Who would have ever expected this? Just a couple of kids on a tourist trip.”

Cameron to seek bolstered UK-Thai relations on first Indo-Pacific trip in new role

The Cabinet minister will sign a UK-Thai ‘strategic partnership road-map’ aimed at strengthening co-operation on regional security and trade.

thailand tours from uk

David Cameron will travel to Thailand for his first visit to the Indo-Pacific region as Foreign Secretary in a bid to bolster trade and security ties with Bangkok.

The Cabinet minister will sign a UK-Thai “strategic partnership road-map” aimed at strengthening co-operation on defence, health and the climate between the two countries.

Lord Cameron said working with Bangkok would mean “jobs and growth back here” in Britain ahead of embarking on the trip, which will later see him head to Australia for the annual Australia-UK minister consultations (Aukmin).

Thailand is a key UK partner in the Indo-Pacific region, which the UK has made a foreign policy priority amid concerns about an increasingly assertive China.

The British Foreign Office said the country plays an important role “particularly on advancing peace and reconciliation in Myanmar and protecting international law and regional cooperation”.

Lord Cameron said: “South East Asia is a commercial powerhouse and Thailand is one of the biggest economies of the lot. Working with countries in this region means jobs and growth back here in the UK.

“Thailand is a founding member of Asean and an influential player across the Indo-Pacific region. We will continue to work with them to address shared global challenges that affect us all – including the impacts of climate change, rapid technological development, and threats to global health.”

The Foreign Secretary will tout UK-Thai defence co-operation on a visit a military airbase to see fighter jets built with British components, with exports worth more than £300 million to the UK economy.

He will also announce the launch of a fund worth up to £6 million aimed at boosting green growth in Thailand, including sustainable transport and carbon pricing.

Lord Cameron will agree with Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin a “UK-Thailand strategic partnership road-map” which the Foreign Office said aimed to “strengthen the relationship on defence, climate and energy, trade and investment, agriculture, digital and tech, health and education ahead of next year’s 170-year anniversary of UK-Thai diplomatic relations.

He will travel to Australia for Aukmin following the Thailand visit.

Thailand Tours & Vacations

Two women talking with their guide next to the buddhas at the WatPho temple

Thailand is an idyllic paradise, where jungle-covered karsts plunge into aquamarine waters and the sand is sugar white.

But no matter how clichéd the fantasy, Thailand delivers in spades. The water around Krabi and Ko Tao really is that deep, cool shade of blue. Phi Phi’s limestone karsts really do look like some alien world. And the food? Let’s just say your local Pad Thai has nothing on Chiang Mai’s street stalls or the floating markets of Amphawa, where little old ladies do things with fish sauce and chili you never thought possible. From the waterfalls of Erawan to a homestay with the hill tribes of the Golden Triangle, these adventures go beyond the tourist traps. Buckle up.

Best time to visit thailand.

Thailand's climate is generally hot, humid, and at times (like other South East Asian countries) monsoonal. The seasons differ from coast to coast, so depending on which areas you're visiting, the weather can vary.

Thailand's mainland region is great to visit from November to February when the weather is cooler and dryer.

If you are planning on visiting the Gulf Coast (east), avoid the northeast monsoon that brings rain from October to January. For destinations like Phuket on the west side of the peninsula, the best time is November to April to avoid the other monsoon which causes Thailand's wet season from May to October.

Culture and customs

Often considered the epicenter of Buddhism, religion permeates daily life in Thailand. Sprinkled throughout the country are thousands of golden temples, where you’ll find Buddhist monks in orange robes walking the streets. Young men are expected to spend some time as a monk as it bestows honor on their families. Visitors should be respectful of monks and dress modestly when visiting a temple (cover your knees and shoulders and remove your shoes).

Like other Asian nations, the concept of ‘saving face’ is important. This means avoiding conflict or embarrassment in order to preserve social standing, dignity, and honor. Thai people will go out of their way to avoid ‘losing face’. Losing your temper or raising your voice are surefire ways to lose face and can be perceived as volatile or rude.

Eating and drinking

Thai food has everything from spicy dishes packed with chilis to milder coconut-based curries. With street stalls and night markets all over the country, it's really easy to pick up a snack wherever you are in Thailand. On many Intrepid trips, you'll be given the opportunity to have dinner with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the local culture. Go a step further on our 8-day Thailand Read Food Adventure to watch, eat, prepare, and present tasty and traditional Thai cuisine.

Things to try in Thailand

1. Pad Thai (Phat Thai)

A well-known dish but for good reason. This delicious plate of stir-fried rice noodles garnished with peanuts is full of flavor and can be served with fresh prawns, chicken, tofu, or vegetables.

2. Tom Yum (Tom Yam)

Usually prepared with stock, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and chili, this soup is widely available in Thailand and has been popularised around the world.

3. Green curry

One of many curries that Thais do so well. Green curry consists of chicken, Thai eggplant, and chilies bathed in a coconut milk-based sauce.

4. Som tam (green papaya salad)

This northern dish of shredded raw papaya, cherry tomatoes, and green beans is a tantalizing mix of sweet, spicy, and sour flavors.

5. Coconut water

For a super fresh thirst quencher, try coconut water straight from the husk.

6. Tropical fruit

Fruit shakes and fresh fruit juices are widely available from markets and restaurants – make the most of all the tropical fruits of Thailand.

Geography and environment

Sharing borders with South East Asian neighbors  Cambodia ,   Laos ,   Malaysia   , and   Myanmar   (Burma), Thailand's natural environment varies greatly from region to region. From the steamy jungles and misty highlands in the north to the white sand beaches and picturesque islands of the south, Thailand's everchanging landscape has been fascinating and entertaining travelers for centuries.

The capital, Bangkok, is a heaving, urban jungle with skyscrapers, street vendors, markets, cars, tuk-tuks, bicycles, and masses of people all competing for space. Despite this, there are pockets of quiet beauty to be found with parks, temples, and traditional shop fronts scattered throughout the city.

Rural areas in the north are typically quieter, with locals living a more traditional way of life; the frenetic pace of the city giving way to a more slow-paced, agricultural-based lifestyle. Houses are simple, there's more space and less of the modern conveniences. Jungles, rivers, bamboo huts, and teak houses are more commonly seen here, and birds and other animal life are more abundant.

History and government

Early history.

Communities based on agriculture (such as rice growing) inhabited Siam (Thailand) as early as the 6th century. In the following centuries, Siam came under the influence of the Khmer, Dvaravati, and Malay cultures, with some temples and monuments in modern-day Thailand showing evidence of this influence. In the 13th century, the city of Sukhothai in northern Thailand became an important capital. The ruins of the Sukhothai Historical Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site) feature remnants of the royal palace, temples, and other buildings and highlight the artistic and architectural features of the era.

Ayutthaya rose to prominence as the new capital in the 14th century and was considered a powerhouse of South East Asia as one of the most important centers of trade in the world. Enduring many battles, invasions, overthrows, and coups, Ayutthaya's far-reaching trade with other regions ensured a flourishing influence of art, weaponry, religion, and cuisine. Much wealth was generated by this enormous empire, with grand palaces, ornate buildings, and huge temples featured throughout the city. All this came to an end when the Burmese invaded in the 18th century, bringing the kingdom to ruin and resulting in the loss of many artistic and cultural treasures. Despite this, the ruins of the city are still standing, have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and are a great day trip from Bangkok. See the sights of ancient and recent Thai history during a 3 day River Kwai and Ancient Thai Kingdoms tour.

Recent history

Thonburi was established as the capital of Siam by General Taksin in the late 18th century, yet this didn't last long with Taksim being deposed and executed not long after. Bangkok was then named capital by General Chakri, who became Rama I - the first king of the Rama Dynasty.

Over the years, Siam (Thailand) remained the only South East Asian country to remain free from European colonization. In 1932, the Siamese Revolution resulted in a constitutional monarchy being formed, and in 1941, Thailand invaded French Indochina, overpowered the French, and claimed Laos.

In the last thirty years, Thailand has seen political power change hands many times, often due to coups, revolutions, and protests. Despite this, Thailand’s economy continues to grow due to its strong tourist industry. Enduring all this, the much-loved King Rama IX has reigned as the Head of State since 1946 - claiming the title of the longest-reigning monarch in the world and providing Thai people with a stable figure to rely upon.

Bustling street markets filled with colorful vendors selling an assortment of goods can be found in small villages and large towns throughout the country. Luxurious, multi-level shopping malls that rival those in European cities are increasingly popping up.

The Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok is perhaps the largest and most extensive market in the world. Here vendors sell everything you can think of, from ceramics to Thai silk to vintage clothing. Bartering is expected at markets and most small vendors. As a rule of thumb, if the price isn’t listed, it’s negotiable. But remember, Thais appreciate friendliness and a sense of humor. The more aggressive you are in trying to get a deal, the less likely you are to get one.

Things to buy in Thailand

  • Vibrant fabric cushions, tablecloths, and hammocks
  • Silver jewelry (look for reputable stores)
  • Handcrafted umbrellas or parasols
  • Thai silk scarves, ties, wraps, and clothing
  • Colorful Celadon ceramics
  • Tailor-made clothing

Festival and events

Loy krathong (festival of lights).

During the 12th lunar month, people across the country gather around lakes, rivers, and canals to symbolically let their worries float away in the most magical way – by releasing colorful lotus-shaped rafts holding candles, incense, and flowers onto the water.

Yee Peng (or Yi Peng)

At the same time that Loy Krathong is taking place, Chiang Mai also celebrates Yee Peng. Religious events, cultural activities, and street parades all mark this Buddhist tradition. But what makes this festival truly spectacular is the release of thousands of sky lanterns that illuminate the sky.

Songkran (Thai New Year)

What happens when New Year’s Day falls during the height of summer? It morphs into a giant water fight. Some towns celebrate just on the day (April 13), while others stretch it out for several days of concerts, ceremonies, and other wet festivities.

Chiang Mai Flower Festival

Flowers are used in ways you never thought imaginable at this colorful three-day event in February. Come for the parade of impressive floral floats, and stay for the tasty Thai street food, music, and performances.

Is Thailand a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

As a whole, Thailand is a hassle-free destination for LGBTQI travelers. Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket all have fairly prominent gay scenes. Be aware that Thais typically do not engage in public displays of affection, regardless of sexual orientation.

What's the transport like in Thailand?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators, and are more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in Thailand, you may find yourself traveling by Songthaew.

Get to know the locals as you share a ride in these converted pick-up trucks. Snagging a seat on the ‘two benches’ (the literal meaning of songthaew) is a popular way of getting around South East Asia.

See Thailand from the ground level on a Saamlaw, the three-wheeled wonder. Sometimes motorized but usually pedal-powered by a local, it’s a fun way to get from A to B or see a new city's sights.

What's the accommodation like in Thailand?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodations as unique and traditional as possible.

When traveling with us in Thailand you may find yourself staying in a Homestay.

Experience friendly Thai hospitality while staying with a local family living a traditional way of life. Make new friends, pick up some local lingo and leave smiling.

The ultimate room with a view - spend the night on a floating bamboo raft house. Enjoy the seclusion, soak up the serenity and leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Does my trip to Thailand support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Thailand directly support our foundation partner, EcoThailand Foundation .

EcoThailand Foundation is on a mission to educate and empower local communities, on the tourist Islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Paluay, about environmental issues like climate change, waste management, nature appreciation, conservation and sustainable lifestyles. Donations from our trips help EcoThailand's environmental guardianship education program for children in local state schools.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

9 spring equinox rituals and traditions from around the world

These festivities all celebrate rebirth and renewal

bulgarian traditional custom spring sign martenitsa on blossom tree branch

What happens at the spring equinox?

Twice a year in spring and autumn, the sun is positioned directly above the equator and the day and night will be around the same length – the word 'equinox' is derived from Latin aequus ('equal') and nox ('night'). In the Northern Hemisphere, the spring equinox – also known as the vernal equinox – happens around the 19th, 20th or 21st of March. In 2024, it occurs on Wednesday 20th of March.

Cultures have their own ways of marking the changing of the seasons. There are mass water fights in Thailand, sun worship at Mayan pyramids in Mexico, egg-standing battles in China and feasting in Iran. Many of the celebrations happen amid a riot of music, colour and dancing and have become treasured customs, and in some places, controversial tourist attractions.

Read on to find out more about spring equinox traditions around the world.

Japan – Shunbun no Hi

A public holiday in Japan, Shunbun no hi marks the end of winter and a time of reflection and renewal. It's traditional to honour the spirits of ancestors, visiting family burial sites, cleaning gravestones and decorating them with flowers, as well as leaving offerings of botamochi (rice balls covered with soybean paste), said to help nourish ancestors in the next life. The renewal element celebrates nature and all living things and given it's the start of sakura ( cherry blossom season), many take to parks for picnics ( han a mi ) under the boughs of the flowering trees.

in japan, many cherry trees are planted on both sides of the streets, and when spring comes, the entire city of tokyo is lined with pink cherry blossoms, which is an important season for the japanese tokyo, japan

India and Nepal – Holi

The exact date for Holi depends on the Hindu holy calendar and changes each year, but it always falls close to the spring equinox, with the party lasting for two days. Hindus in India and Nepal take to the streets to throw fantastically bright coloured powders and water over each other in celebration of fertility and love, against a backdrop of music and dancing. In some places, wood and dung cakes are burned to symbolise the triumph of good over evil.

arsana holi, one of the most joyful festival of india this is birth place of radha ,lord krishnas beloved attracts a large number of visitors each year when it celebrated holi

Thailand – Songkran

Songkran actually takes place just after the spring equinox. It's a three-day water festival to mark the start of the Thai New Year. The most famous part of the celebration is the huge water fight that takes place in the streets with participants grabbing buckets, water pistols and hoses to battle with neighbours, while loud music plays. The water is said to wash away the bad luck from the previous year. There are some more sedate traditions too: sprinkling water on Buddha statues at the temple to represent purification and good fortune or pouring water into the hands of the elderly to show respect. The water-fight element has become a huge attraction in recent years, with tourists flocking to join the fray.

Central Asia, the Middle East, the Caucasus, the Balkans – Nowruz

Nowruz, meaning 'new day', is rooted in the beliefs of the religion Zoroastrianism, practiced in ancient Persia. It's marked by countries with significant Persian cultural influences and, while traditions vary, they celebrate the same things: spring and a time for rebirth and renewal. For some, the run up includes intense spring cleaning and, for others, the preparation of fire and water rituals, including jumping over bonfires. The flames are said to symbolically purge bad experiences from the past year. During the two-week celebrations, there are family gatherings, showcases of poetry, music and traditional sports, and a lot of food and drink. Persian New Year is on the day of the equinox and many will prepare the Haft-Seen table – a spread of seven items that represent renewal and springtime. The centrepiece, the sabzeh , is a sprouting plant symbolising rebirth.

England – Sunrise at Stonehenge

For the likes of pagans and druids, the spring equinox (Ostara) is celebrated as a time of renewal and rebirth – and 5000-year-old Stonehenge in Wiltshire is the best known place to gather in the UK. It attracts people from all over the world (including many curious tourists) who congregate at dawn to see the sun rise over the stones. Anyone making the trip can expect a friendly atmosphere amid chanting, drumming and even the occasional druid wedding.

Mexico – El Castillo and Teotihuacan

Mexicans and tourists alike celebrate the new season at ancient Mayan sites. At the Temple of Kukulkan on the Yucatán, a play of light and shadow during the equinox creates the illusion of a snake rippling down the northern staircase, symbolising the return of an ancient god to earth, said to bring hope for spring. At Teotihuacan, near Mexico City, pilgrims gather dressed in white with red scarves. They hold out their hands to worship the sun and welcome its energy and warmth. There is a carnival atmosphere, with music, dancing, incense-burning and hot-air balloon rides.

Poland – The drowning of Marzanna

In Poland, they still observe the pagan tradition of the drowning of Marzanna, the Slavic goddess and symbol of winter. On the first day of spring, people burn effigies (dolls tend to be made from straw and ribbons), which are then 'drowned' in a river in a bid to usher out winter and welcome spring.

Bulgaria – Martenitsa

In Bulgaria, celebrations kick off from th e beginning of the month to honour Baba Marta (Grandmother March), characterised as a grumpy old woman as unpredictable as the weather. People exchange red and white bracelets, dolls or tassels, known as Martenitsa –the red symbolises life and passion and the white, purity. When a sign of spring is spotted, such as a stork in the sky or a blossoming tree, Baba Marta is said to be appeased and will let spring through. The spotter will then take off their amulet and hang it on a nearby tree to symbolise health and happiness for the new season.

martenitsi are worn from baba marta day until the wearer first sees a stork, swallow, or blossoming tree

China – Standing eggs

In China, children get involved in the spring equinox celebrations by decorating eggs and making them "stand up" or balance on their ends. It's believed that the position of the sun at the time makes it the best day to attempt the feat – anyone who succeeds will have luck for the year ahead.
