kala travel ukulele concert

Although I don't own one (yet), I played a few of them have been pleasantly surprised how good these sound and how they projects, despite the thin body. As for "travel", I have a couple that I am friends with that travel internationally with two of these - packed together in a single tenor padded gig bag.

One thing I don't understand about the Kala Travel Series are the gigbags. If they really are for travelling with, why don't they fit shoulder straps to the concert and tenor gigbags? The gigbags for the soprano and sopranissimo do come with shoulder straps, but they're (it seems to me) the two sizes where shoulder straps are least essential, especially the sopranissimo - aka pocket uke!

Oh! Just noticed that you mention shoulder straps in your review - in that case, it's about time they fitted shoulder straps to the concert gigbags - let's hope they'll be fitted to the tenor travel uke too!! :-)

I do travel by air with this uke and find it very handy to fit in the above the seat bins on top of everything else, or if in a window seat, up against the cabin wall. The thin body is perfect in these situations. Mine has been around the U.S. and to Europe, it likes to travel! This combined with nice sound and a wonderful feel in the hands makes it one of my favorite ukuleles.

@colbyj - I think that highlights the difference between regulations in the US and those in the UK where I am. In the UK, hand luggage is restricted based on overall dimensions. So if a ukulele is thinner, but still the same overall length, then it will still fail the restriction and may not be allowed on board - thats what I meant by the thickness not making any difference in UK.

Just bought a Kala travel soprano. It's also an excellent instrument with the same characteristics as your concert.

@jivechris - yeah - over the years I have played all three scales now - liked them all!

I tried these out a few times when I shopped for ukes - all sizes. My initial impression, other than the punchy sound, was they felt really comfortable to hold. Something about having my arm a bit closer to my body just felt more natural and I can see it working well as a couch-uke - there's a good name. I could see this as my next uke ... when I get around to "justifying" another one. On the fence about concert or tenor.

I have wanted a concert or tenor one of these for a while after I played a friends and loved the sound. The travel thing might be a bit silly though for biking trips it would be nice and space is pretty limited. Note that all US airlines permit "small instruments" as carry on regardless of whether they meet the dimension requirements or not. I have a very large Gator case for my tenor which I have no problem carrying on. The gate agent says "Violin?" and I give a non-committal nod. More respect that way. Also, I collect those "cabin baggage cleared" tags they give so I can persuade any doubters. I am very curious as to what you think about the playability impact of the thinner body? It must change the balance at least a little.

@mcp - sadly in the UK we don't have such rules on airlines - it is purely down to total baggage size regardless of what is in the baggage. Playability wise - this one amazed me - not only for the size dimensions, but for the price. I honestly think this is one of the better sounding instruments I have played for this money - regardless of the thin body - it beats most ukuleles at the same price.

Kala has started selling travel baritone ukes. I've ordered one, but haven't played one yet. I trust it will be equally well received, as I have heard concert and tenor versions that sounded WONDERFUL.

I have the tenor version- I love the sound but not the slim body. I also have the Kala KA-STG and an Alvarez AU70T solid spruce top. But they all sound VERY different. Can you recommend a regular size tenor ukulele with that particular bright "travel tenor" sound? Or do you think that sound is because of the slim body/arched back? Thank you

Is this ukulele made in China?

I just purchased one of these as I just fell in love with the sound and how it felt when I hold it. I am a new player so am just learning. One thing I am concerned about is that gig bag. I would like to travel with my uke but I really don't feel the gig bag is protection enough for it jostling among other luggage and items in the back of our truck. I would really like a case with better protection but given the fact that it has a rather shallow body, I would think regular cases would cause issues with how it sits in regards to the neck. I wonder if the only solution is to use a towel or something similar to bridge the gap as it were. Thoughts? Thanks in advance and I love your site, videos and your book too!

I am quite interested in this uke but I see there is also a newer model with a cutaway and spalted maple back and sides (SSTU-SMC-C). Has anyone had a chance to compare the two? The newer one costs about 50% more, so I am not sure if it is worth the extra.

Kala KA-SSTU-C Concert Travel Ukulele Solid Spruce top with gigbag

main product photo

You can take this ultra thinbody Kala concert ukulele anywhere. Stuff it in your backpack, suitcase or briefcase and away you go.

This Kala travel ukulele features a 1 1/4 to 1 3/4" archback thinbody depth with a surprisingly full sound. It has a solid spruce top, laminate mahogany back and sides, Rosewood fretboard and bridge, Aquila super nylgut strings, and it projects really nicely. It has geared machine heads and a nice familiar 35mm nut width.

This ukulele comes with its own embroidered gig bag, which is very high quality and rather nice!

Value for Money

The ukulele is already a very transport-friendly instrument but the Kala thinline travel ukulele takes it one step further by reducing the depth of the ukulele’s body (to 1 and a quarter inches). The ukulele comes in soprano and – strangely considering they’re aiming for compactness – tenor size. They have a solid spruce top with mahogany, maple or lacewood back and sides.

To gimmick up the idea even further, some of these ukuleles now come with a compass in the headstock.

I don’t leave my cave very often so I haven’t invested in one of these. However, I do have a Kala Lacewood – which has the same specs as the travel lacewood apart from the body width. It’s my favourite soprano so I have confidence that these will be great too. You can read my full Kala Lacewood review here .

Kala Travel Ukulele Review

I have two Kala travel ukes – a lacewood tenor and a cedar top tenor. They are fantastic, I don’t play anything else at the moment. They are quite different and I might have to keep both. The cedar is more mellow and sweet and seems to suit Worth strings, which don’t work so well on the spruce (sound a bit brittle), which is really grunty with Aquilas (I prefer concert gauge, and I’m going to try a set of sopranos when they arrive) I have had a concert travel concert too, but it didn’t seem to sing as well as all the tenors.

The term “travel” is a bit silly really – they are still too long to fit in a backpack. Slim body would be a better description. For me the attractions are the less boomy, more balanced tone compared to a standard tenor, and just the comfort of the slimmer body (sadly not like mine).

Here is a clip of my lacewood/spruce.

it’s a great uke (I’ve got the standard travel soprano, and played the tenor). amazing value, and the gig bag is great. my only problem was I didn’t like the geared tuners, which knackered the balance of the instrument entirely. swapped for friction pegs, and job’s a good ‘un. that said, Kala, and in particular, Southern Ukulele Stores, are so into making everyone happy, that I think you can order friction pegs OR geared tuners, whichever is your preference.

perfect for stashing in your drawer at work or taking on your travels. highly recommended, either your second uke, or as a great starter instrument.

I got one of these travel Kala soprano’s for Christmas, and it is a lovely sounding instrument. Agree completely about the geared tuners. My local music shop supplied me some friction tuners, but they didn’t fit. So they got the holes plugged with bushes to make them work (thanks, Alistair’s Music!). In saying that, I got in touch with Kala and they recommend Grover Champion dulcimer friction tuners, which are available from Stewmac.com. Friction tuners are definitely the way to go with this uke.

i think the kala travel ukulele is a great uke. it definently is easy to travel with because of its size. i took it one a trip to kauai once and had no problem with it at all. i own a tenor kala travel ukulele and it is perfect.

I’ve had a Kala tenor travel uke with passive pickup for a couple of years and I love it. Although the tone may not be quite up to that of my 2 Koalohas, it’s surprisingly loud. The slim body makes it really comfortable to play. My only criticism is that the passive pickup has quite a low output so you don’t get much out of a small amp. I’m planning to get another just so I can have it permanently strung with a low G – preferably with a better pickup.

I have the Kala travel soprano and liked it except for the weight at the headstock. Then I found the comment above from snojimbo and switched from the stock gear tuners to Grover Champion dulcimer friction tuners; and that made for a huge decrease in weight. Before, I “liked” my travel soprano; now I “love” it. Thanks for that tip!

I have a couple of ukes (one being the sstu-t tenor)and rooms full of guitars. Since I got the Kala, it’s become one of the most played instruments in the house. The tone is amazing given the size. It’s actually really surprising. Friends of mine are regularly blown away by it. I’ve had no issues with the balance due to the mechanical pegs. In fact, I really like the stock tuners. They’re precise when tuning and the instrument holds it’s tune very well.

Seriously – I can’t rave about this instrument enough. For the price it’s steal.

Yesterday I rang around some Australian shops to buy one for my boss. Apparently there’s a three month wait on the tenors “because people are talking about this uke and they’re flying off shelves”. I managed to find him an electric version (sstu-te). I’m looking forward to checking it out. 🙂

Which brands of ukulele should I consider??

I'm fairly new to the Ukulele trend, ive been playing for a little over a month now, but I am in LOVE. Right now I have a really cheap ukulele(Diamond Head DU150) I got it to see if I would love playing, and now that I know that I do I need something a little nicer for myself! I know I for sure want a tenor sized, nothing too expensive(max budget $250), I'm looking for a laminate because where i live its super dry and i don't want to have to worry so much about it being hydrated or not. So far from what i have read Kalas are known for some great quality Ukuleles, even their laminate ones. But I feel the selection on models is very limited. I'm open to anything I just want something that is known for having quality instruments. I've heard of Ohana, Luna, Kanile'a, Islander, and some nicer ones like Pono and Mainland( although I'm fairly certain they only make solid wood Ukes, correct me if I'm wrong). so I'm asking for your advice, which brands make good quality instruments and which ones should I avoid? If anyone has a specific model they love I will happily accept any opinions or recommendations. I am a sucker for satin finish, so even better if its got that. Thank you so much! -TheKlmslim

If you're committed to your price range and to a laminate, I think Kala and Ohana are your best bets. Mainland is just a couple bucks above your max, but they are solid wood ukes. Really, keeping a uke humidified is really not that big a job-- sometimes I feel like it's overstated in discussions here. So you may want to consider Mainland, which I think may be the best bang-for-the-buck in your pricerange. If I was buying a laminate uke in your price range today, I would probably go Kala. The new zircote model is eye-catching and has a nice tone: http://www.theukulelesite.com/shop-by/brand/kala/kala-ziricote-tenor-ka-zct-t.html With all import ukes, buy from a reputable retailer like HMS, Mim, etc. They'll help make sure you get a good one and stand behind the sale if you have any problems.

I'm a fan of the Fluke/Flea ukes by Magic Fluke. They are quite humidity issue resistant, particularly if you buy one with the plastic fretboard. You can get into a tenor fluke in your price range if you're gentle on the options. Note that due to the bridge design, you'll probably need to make a fairly permanent choice about high vs. low G tuning, and that the base model comes with friction tuners. The other uke in this price range that I've really enjoyed is the Islander - they have a wider fretboard and shallow neck that I find really comfortable. That said, my daughter's Islander soprano has some minor buzzing due to changes in neck profile most likely related to the low humidity where we live.

UkeStuff

I'd tell you to buy a Caramel for $37 or $40, and then save up for a more "expensive" purchase of a Mainland, better Ohana, Opio, or Pono.

For your price you can probably snag a good used here in the marketplace. I live in dry California. Other than my Koaloha, I don't use a humidifier. I have a Mainland and it does not need humidifier. Solid wood is such an upgrade. Skip the next level laminate and go with a real Upgrade. I hope I'm not breaking any rules here. Larry the thin man is a very reputable luthier. He is the repair person for several music camps I go to. Never a complaint about his work and prices always fair. He sells seconds of Mainland and Makai and sets them up. In your price range. Ask him about a tenor. https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/msg/5990778333.html Happy hunting!

Also, Gretsch makes a tenor laminate that sounds really good. I have one I would sell, but the shipping makes that hard. I have heard that the Koalana is nice, but I haven't played one. I like Ohana's laminate and solid top. A solid top instrument might be a good compromise that you could consider.

I think Koalana might be what you are looking for. It's the laminate version of Koaloha. http://www.theukulelesite.com/koalana-tenor-kta-0010.html

Also, any laminate from the following places will be above average, I think. I can vouch for Mim, especially, as I've bought from her more than once. One time, she called me two days after the purchase to report that the uke I was buying had a buzz that she couldn't fix, so she was going to refund me rather than ship it out like that. If Guitar Center gets a cheap laminate uke that buzzes, they'll sell it anyway. Mim not only inspected it but didn't sell it. Guitar Center would never put that much effort into their cheaper instruments. The other people on this list, from what I've heard, put a lot of care into their ukes, much like Mim. Vouch for MIM's Ukes too. She's probably who I would ask. I personally live in Arizona and like you, I don't want to deal with humidification, so I attempt to only buy laminates. I am a big fan of Kiwaya/Famous. I also like Flea's/Fluke's as they make a great travel uke when you move on to bigger and better ukes.

Wait , mainland IS solid wood , you don't use humidifier in California?

buganeal

I would pick a Cedar topped Kala. You can buy them from whoever you feel comfortable with but at this price point, ensure a proper setup is done. The setup will not cost you a single cent more but can make the uke play like a dream. http://www.theukulelesite.com/kala-ka-atp-ct-solid-cedar-top-tenor-slothead-gloss-finish.html

Mim's the bestest. I'd order from Mike at Uke Republic too. Mainland also gives awesome service. Elderly would be my last option of these. You can't go wrong with a Kala, if you don't mind Chinese. I've had 3 and they were lovely, still have one.

strumsilly

I have one of these{Islander AT-4} and it is one of my favorite tenors, and I have a Collings, Martin, and a Koaloha. They are very plain, no bling, but are lightly built with a 1.5 inch neck width, which I prefer. I think I paid about $150 for it without a case. out of stock at HMS and Amazon though. http://www.theukulelesite.com/islander-tenor-acacia-at-4-w-hard-case.html I did find one in stock at this place, but I'd ask HMS if they are getting more in as their price with a hard case is killer. https://monstermusicny.com/products/islander-at-4-tenor-acacia-ukulele

Check your fleas

I'll second many of the recommendations here. I own Ohanas, a Fluke, a KoAlana, and an Islander. All fine ukes for different reasons. My first uke was a Kala 8-string tenor, which was above my limited skills at the time. If you're buying new, I'd also strongly recommend buying from one of the dealers that does setups. If you're in the U.S., that would be Mim, UkeRepublic, or HMS. Outside the U.S., I hear Southern Ukulele Store in the U.K. is quite good. Good setup is essential. Have fun!

In Oakland you are right on the Bay and down here in the South Bay I've never seen the humidity get low enough to be an issue but I have seen the humidity get up into the mid sixties which is borderline problematic. I really don't think you need that humidifier unless you really love running your AC in the summer (which I doubt you need to do since you live in Oakland. Note, I'll second all the recommendations for a Kala. I got my wife a Ziricote Kala Soprano from HMS and it's real sweet (it's a laminate but it sure doesn't look or sound like one.) -- Gary -- Gary

Solid wood is, in essence, one solid piece of wood that makes up the entire soundboard of the instrument. It is the most resonate and pure form of the tonewood and requires much more finesse to install properly. However the wood is intended to sound with all its unique tones, it will be most apparent in a solid wood instrument. It is somewhat delicate in comparison to laminate wood but is highly sought after.

The most crucial component to an instrument’s tone is the top of the instrument known as the sound board. The top of the instrument vibrates along with the strings to create greater projection that also shapes the tone. At Kala we have a robust selection of tonewood options that satisfy a huge variety of tonal preferences. Our solid top instruments are sought after for their excellent construction and beautiful sound.

If you do not wish to have a signature requirement you will need to notify us, either by leaving a note in the “special instructions” when adding the item(s) to your shopping cart or by emailing our shipping department directly. Any shipping related requests (hold/delay/address change) should also be directed to our shipping department ( [email protected] ).  NOTE FOR INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS: You may also be required to pay import duties/taxes, this will vary depending on your location and the value of the item(s). To estimate these taxes, you can contact your local customs office. Fedex also offers a helpful estimation tool:  https://www.fedex.com/en-us/shipping/international.html UNITED STATES FISH AND WILDLIFE PERMIT: If your ukulele contains any amount of shell inlay (abalone or pearl) it will require a permit to be shipped internationally. The cost of this permit is $93.00 USD. We will handle the paperwork and file the permit for you, but the cost of all duties and fees are the responsibility of the customer.

SHIPPING COST  will vary depending on the size dimensions and weight of the package as well as the destination. To get a quote, use the “Calculate Shipping Cost” link located next to the “Add to Cart button” on each listing. This is made even easier when you are already logged in to your customer account. Follow this link to create an account if you don’t already have one go HERE . FREE SHIPPING:  All orders within the USA with a total over $500 will qualify for free FedEx 2-day air shipping. SHIPMENT AND TRACKING NOTIFICATIONS  are sent automatically via email as soon as the shipping label is created so please make sure your email address is accurate when placing the order. Outgoing shipments are picked up by our shipping carriers Monday through Friday.  ACCESSORY AND CASE ORDERS:  While non-instrument orders for cases and accessories do not require the same processing time needed for instruments, they do require time for processing and packing. The typical processing time for accessory/case orders is (1-4 business days) depending on current order volume.  CURRENT SETUP PROCESSING TIMES AND DETAILS ARE LOCATED UNDER THE “SETUP OPTIONS” TAB.*  *If you would like to receive your instrument as soon as possible you can forego the full setup process by selecting the “Basic QC Only” option or by selecting the “Full Setup RUSH” option when adding instruments to your shopping cart. More details are available under the “Setup Options” tab.

Setup Options

Current Turnaround Time: Amount of time it takes before shipment-

Full Setup: 10-14 Business Days

Basic Quality Control:  2-3 Days BASIC QUALITY CONTROL covers inspecting the instrument for any major defects that would have been missed by the factory and any faults in construction that could potentially damage or limit the functionality of the instrument over time. Any defective instruments are rejected and replaced.  We make sure that each Ukulele meets the basic standard for a brand new instrument and will be ready to play once you receive it. A final cleanup is also included after inspection before packing and shipment. Full Setup - FREE for all Ukuleles $399 and over / $20.00 for Ukuleles from $300-399 / $30.00 for Ukuleles Under $300

-Overall QC evaluation: To find defects in construction as well as to get an overall view of the instrument and note the areas that need extra attention and adjustment during the setup.

- Saddle Adjustment: The height of the saddle is lowered to reduce the distance between the strings and the fretboard, making it easier to play than the factory setup, especially higher up the fretboard.

- Nut Slot Adjustment: The depth, width, and angle of the nut slots are adjusted to create a more comfortable playing experience especially on the lower frets.

- Fret Dressing: After adjusting the nut and saddle heights, high spots in the fretboard or uneven frets will potentially cause fret buzz, dead spots, or other unwanted problems. The frets are filed to create a more consistent level across the fretboard. We then crown the frets to return their rounded curvature back to the top of each fret creating a clear contact point for each string. We then smooth and polish the frets and condition the fingerboard to bring them back to new condition.

- Final Cleanup: We always do a final overall cleanup of the instrument to make sure it is in new condition and ready to play before it is prepared for shipment.

Rush Setup & Delivery - Additional $50.00 The RUSH SETUP AND DELIVERY service is for customers who would still like to receive everything included in the full setup but on a shorter time frame. One of our setup technicians will work overtime outside of normal business hours to complete the setup within 2-3 days of the order being placed and immediately hand it over to the shipping department for packing and shipment. The $50.00 rush charge is in addition to the cost of the full setup.

Additional services (see individual product listings to add these services to your order) Re-stringing:  We will replace the factory installed stock string set with a new set of your choosing. Select the “replace stock strings” option when adding your desired string set to the shopping cart. Strap Button Installation:  1-2 buttons are installed to allow the use of a strap. Color options available.  Pickup installation:  for players who would like the option to play or record with amplification. Friction Tuner Upgrade (friction tuners only):  We offer upgrade options for select instruments with friction tuners to be retrofitted with new geared tuners for better precision and comfort when tuning. Left-handed Setup:  Left-handed setups are also available upon request. Occasionally an additional charge may be added for compensated saddles on select models.
