Travel logo with the title 'Brand Identity for a Spanish restaurant chain'

Brand Identity for a Spanish restaurant chain

“La Brasería de la Viña” is a chain of fine road restaurants in Spain. The first restaurant was opened in Ribera del Duero region in Spain. It is one of the most recognised wine origin denominations in the world. "La Brasería de la Viña" means "the vineyard brasserie". I crafted a clean and charismatic wordmark inspired by the vineyard landscapes. The new identity tells a compelling story of a restaurant & store proud of their roots and aiming allways to offer a pleasant experience. The Brand Voice still has a casual and accessible message (not too luxurious/ fancy as the expensive city restaurants), but at the same time it is quite elegant and sophisticated. This convince clients that they will get the most of the money spent during their trip. A great objective was to design a logo that is easily recognizable from distance, easy to memorize and works well at any scale.

Frequently asked questions about travel logos

Creating the perfect logo for travel with freelogodesign is easy, but just in case, here are some answers to questions you may have.

Whether you are an expert or not, here are some steps to follow that will help you create a travel logo. First, analyze your business and products. What are your strengths, weaknesses, and values? Never forget that you are creating a travel logo for your business, not for a competitor. Then, think about your brand image by choosing a logotype, color palette, and font that represent your business well.

Finding the perfect icon when creating a travel logo is essential, especially if you decide to make a combination mark or emblem logo. There are thousands of available icons on FreeLogoDesign to help you. When creating your travel logo with our logo maker, click on the Add an icon button to begin searching. Try different icons until you find the one that meets your needs.

Yes! As the name suggests, you can create a free travel logo with FreeLogoDesign’s logo maker. You will have access to all the logo templates (we have more than 2000!) and features to create your logo. Your free travel logo will be in a PNG format, 200 x 200 px. If you need high resolution or vector files, please note that you can also purchase one of our premium plans or add-ons: business card templates, brand guide, email signature, invoices.

What should be the main color of your new logo? Choosing the right colors for your travel logo can be challenging. Your brand image components of a logo are significant as they could impact the first impression someone has of your business. Selecting the right colors can make a huge difference in how people perceive your brand since every color has a specific meaning. People only need a few milliseconds to have an opinion on your business when they look at your travel logo. You must then ensure that your logo stands out from the competition while remaining representative of your field and values. If you want to know more and make an informed choice, take a look at FreeLogoDesign’s page on the meaning of the colors.

What makes a good Travel Agency logo?

logos travel praca

Not all Travel Agency logos are created equal. Choosing the right logo type for your business is one of the keys to creating a great Travel Agency logo. There's an array of logo types and what you choose depends on the emotions and message you want your logo to evoke. Logos with just text or simple letters can convey professionalism or luxury, whereas a Travel Agency logo with just an icon can be more jovial and exciting - maybe your logo should have both? This is a critical decision in the logo design process.

logos travel praca

Ever considered why some companies use specific colors in the Travel Agency logo? Or why some businesses have certain colors in their branding? Color theory and psychology is the science of eliciting emotions and feelings via the use of color. Knowing what colors trigger different reactions from consumers can help a company create the perfect Travel Agency logo for their business. It definitely pays to choose the right colors for your Travel Agency logo. Want to be seen as a dependable, trustworthy brand or maybe you want to be sporty and active. Choosing the right colors for your logo is the key to getting the message right.

Shapes & Patterns

Just like colors, shapes can influence a person's emotions. The psychology of shapes has a key role in creating a great Travel Agency logo. We're not just talking about squares, circles and triangles here, but the geometric patterns that make up your Travel Agency logo. Sharp corners and straight lines are aligned with discipline and strength, whereas softer curves, ovals and ellipses can convey a sense of eternity, mystery or magic. There's more shapes to consider as part of your logo - natural shapes like leaves, complex shapes like spirals or even abstract patterns. Getting the balance right will help you get the perfect Travel Agency logo for your brand.

There’s many ways you can convey that your brand is a globalized, internationally acclaimed business. But the most visible and instant step you can do to achieve this goal is to design a travel-inspired logo. Think airplanes, luggages, airports, palm trees, map pins, globe, cameras — all these are ubiquitous, well-known symbols about the travel industry. If you are a company that is involved in the tourism industry, say airlines, travel agencies, and hotels, then a professional-grade Travel logo speaks volumes for the brand.

Here’s how you can do it cheaply and fast. First, turn to beginner-friendly DIY tools for logo designs such as BrandCrowd’s travel logo maker. Inspire yourself with thousands of available templates. You can pick trip and vacation logo inspiration from here then jump to other well-known tools such as Photoshop. Or you could stick to a template and redesign it yourself. How? Well, BrandCrowd offers tools for newbie and intermediate logo designers. Just pick a template and change some of the elements by choosing the provided shapes, icons, fonts, and layout. By the end of it, you’ll be surprised by how the template has changed.

Make your brand more adventure -packed with some inexpensive if not free logos from BrandCrowd’s travel logo maker. 10 Best Travel Logos And How to Design Your Own with our Logo Maker

Traveling is supposed to be fun and exciting, capitalizing on people’s natural passion for adventure… so why are so many travel logos boring? If you’re a travel brand, your logo should reflect the thrill and exhilaration of the industry to entice customers and encourage their high spirits. The question is, how do you design a travel logo like that if you’re new to logo design?

In this guide, we explain how to design your own travel logo , starting with an in-depth look at the 10 best travel logos to emulate. We’ll explain what these big travel brands do right with their logos, and then dive into practical advice new and small businesses can use for their own travel logos.

1. Lufthansa logo design

The German airline Lufthansa is a great travel logo to start with; they demonstrate a lot of the traditional guidelines for travel logos well. For starters, they use an emblematic bird for their symbol — birds, airplanes, and other flying objects are common choices for travel logos because they represent the freedom of going anywhere (not to mention a lot of travel involves flying).

It’s not just the bird iconography, but also the style in which it’s designed. Lufthansa makes good use of the repeated parallel lines, which, as explained in our guide to using shapes in logo design, denote stability and reliability.

For travel brands, these parallel lines are often used to show motion in static images, giving the illustrated bird a sense that it’s flying forward. Too many straight lines, like those in lettering of their brand name, can make a logo seem stiff or formal. Lufthansa counteracts this by enclosing the bird in a circle to soften their image and appear more casual.

2. Airbnb logo design

One of the most recognizable logos in any industry, Airbnb combines various graphic design principles to create a simple but meaningful travel logo that checks every box. The use of curves and circles makes them appear casual and fun, a good choice to mitigate fears for a brand that invites people to live in strangers’ homes.

This casual style is furthered by the upside-down heart shape, a universally recognized symbol for peace and trust. However, one of the most inspiring elements of the Airbnb logo is the subtle nod to digital map pointers (the shape in the center). Although not always obvious, this oval with a point is associated with markers on digital maps, hinting that the brand is in the travel industry even if the viewer has never heard of Airbnb before.

3. Tripadvisor logo design

Tripadvisor is one of the world’s most popular travel brands, even if they don’t offer long-distance transportation or accommodations. Because they’re more in the realm of advice and planning than actual traveling, they can experiment with more diverse design techniques that other travel brands cannot.

For example, owls are often used for education logos because of their connotation to intelligence. However, because Tripadvisor has one foot in the travel industry and another in the education industry, the owl is the perfect fit — as a bird, it’s well-suited for travel logos. The excessive use of circles also makes them seem more approachable, welcoming to first-time users.

4. Expedia logo design

Airplanes may seem too on-the-nose for travel logos, but there’s no better symbol to represent air travel —  no one will question what industry Expedia is in after seeing their logo. What makes this logo great is the extended line coming from the plane’s tail: like Lufthansa’s repeated parallel lines, the long line coming from the back of the plane makes the image look like it’s moving forward, adding more life to the logo.

Also like Lufthansa, Expedia encloses their logo in a circle to make the brand seem more inviting. If you’re familiar with color theory for logo design, you can also appreciate Expedia’s choice of colors. Dark blue suggests capability and trust, necessary traits for alleviating travel fears, while yellow is the perfect pairing to accent, as we explained in our guide to color combinations for logo design.

5. Azul Airlines logo design

With logo design tips, learning the rules is crucial, but so is learning when to break them. Azul Airlines of Brazil deviates from the standard best practices for travel logos, but does so in a way that still works.

Notably, Azul Airline’s logo is very angular, full of rectangles, straight lines, and sharp corners. All of these design techniques are reserved for serious and professional brands — they represent authority and stability at the cost of friendliness.

However, Azul softens the authoritarianism in two ways. First, it uses vibrant and pastel colors, which come off as fun and whimsical to balance things out. It also uses creative and unique visuals — the continent of South America reimagined in a cubist daydream. This visual helps people not only remember the brand, but also associate it with its main geographical area of operation.

6. Budget Yatra logo design

Just as Budget Yatra makes travel services accessible to low-budget travellers, their logo takes traditional travel logo techniques and gives them a “inexpensive” spin. This is a delicate line to walk — everyone wants a low-cost airline but no one wants a “cheap” airline — although Budget Yatra does so gracefully.

For one thing, they use a “cheaper” version of an airplane with its paper counterpart. Paper airplanes can get complicated, so they opted for a simple and easy-on-the-eyes visual style with minimal lines and details. Moreover, their accent color orange is closely associated with inexpensive and budget goods; clearly their logo designers did their research.

7. Velvet Escape logo design

As a travel blog and destination review site, Velvet Escape has different criteria for their logo than an airline or direct travel service. They take advantage of their freedom with their green coloring and environmental imagery — appealing to younger and more eco-friendly travelers.

But Velvet Escape still wants people to know what industry they’re in, so they maintain a few of the travel logo staples. Their logo revolves around the image of a bird, a well-used icon for travel logos, and they attach a long line to the back to show movement (just like Expedia). What they do well is blend all these elements together — the flight line of the bird doubles as the vein of the leaf, creating a memorable logo that readers can easily recognize.

8. Garuda Indonesia logo design

We’ve mentioned the travel logo trends of birds and repeated parallel lines already, but Garuda Indonesia’s logo demonstrates both perfectly. The way the entire logo comes together really emphasizes the dynamic movement of the image, furthered by the way the lines get skinnier from right to left.

It’s also worth mentioning their use of curves — the most noticeable elements are rounded and circular, making the brand seem more playful. Even the bird’s beak and “angry” eyes are slightly rounded at the corners to keep the logo from appearing too aggressive. The color choice, with both light and dark shades of blue, helps the brand appear both friendly and professional respectively.

9. Anywhere We Roam logo design

Another travel blog, Anywhere We Roam seems to take a page from Airbnb’s book. They also use the subtle marker from digital maps as their main image, a cue to onlookers that they’re in the travel business. Unlike Airbnb, however, they include the telltale dot in the center, leaving no doubt that it’s in fact a map marker.

Although black and white logos tend to look more serious than colorful ones, Anywhere We Roam keeps things light with its cute renditions of feet and toes. Their unique style for footprints not only represents the travel industry to first-time viewers, it also leaves a lasting impression in the minds of its readers.

10. Cathay Pacific logo design

Last, we have one of the most successful travel logos, and one that displays some of the best logo design techniques for the industry. Cathay uses a bird shape and repeated parallel lines like other travel logos, but they do so in a way that’s wholly unique and original. It’s even questionable whether that image is a bird at all — although that kind of mystique just makes it more memorable.

That’s the goal of all logo design, not just travel logos — enlist the tried-and-true design techniques, but do them in a way that’s never been done before. If you can manage that, you’ll have a travel logo that looks every bit as iconic as Cathay Pacific’s.

3 Expert Tips for Designing Your Travel Logo

What can you take away from the best travel logos above? Here are the top 3 tips to keep in mind when making your travel logo.

1. Flight imagery

Logos aren’t just about fun colors and animals mascots — logos are communication tools so that anyone who sees them knows what business you’re in. Essentially, your logo is a quick advertisement, explaining who you are and what you do.

So for travel logos, you want to include imagery of flight or flying to indicate that you’re in the travel industry (even if you’re not an airline, like the travel blogs above). The two obvious and most common icons are airplanes and birds, but luckily both have a wide enough range that you can still be unique and original.

Always consider what type of brand you want to be before settling on a single image or style. For example, Tripadvisor wants to come across as educational and wise, so they use an owl — still a bird, but a bird specific to their brand identity. Likewise, Budget Travel uses a paper airplane because they’re a discount brand — still an airplane, but in a style that caters to their specific business goals.

2. Circles and curves

Depending on whom you ask, traveling can be scary and nerve-wracking — especially if there’s air travel involved. To help alleviate these fears, a lot of travel logos incorporate visual styles that relax people, such as pastel colors, cute imagery, and, namely, circles/curves.

As we explain in our guide to shapes in logo design, circles and curves create playful and friendly appearances. Because the eye naturally follows any line it sees, circular and wavy lines come across as whimsical and fun-to-watch, as opposed to straight lines and sharp corners, which come across as serious and no-nonsense.

We see a lot of travel logos use circles and curves to mitigate the natural fears that come with traveling and help put customers at ease. At its heart, travel is supposed to be fun and carefree — a recreational activity — so many travel brands lean into this with casual logo design.

3. Use lines to show movement

A technique straight from the pages of a comic book, lots of travel logos use lines in “trick” the eye into thinking a static image is moving. As mentioned above, the human eye follows any line it sees, and that eye movement can be manipulated into making the image seem more “alive” than it really is.

With travel logos, there’s two uses to this technique that are quite common. The first is parallel lines; the use of multiple lines all traveling in the same direction suggests the object is moving, as if they create a blur, like a photograph of a moving object.

The second is the use of a single line, but done in a way that it attracts most of the attention. In both the Expedia logo and the Velvet Escape logo, the “trail” line is much longer than the other lines, making them stand out. The beauty of this technique is that you can do anything you want with the line: a straight long line makes it seem like the image is going faster and farther, but a wavy or loopy line can make it look like that object is dancing or having fun.

Regardless of which technique you use, make sure to put the line behind the object to make it look like it’s moving forward. In short, place the lines to indicate where the object has been, not where it’s going.

How to Design a Travel Logo With a Logo Maker

Now that you have an idea of what goes into an effective travel logo, the question is, how do you make one? Essentially you have two options: hire someone to design it for you or design it yourself. Both have their own merits and drawbacks, so let’s examine both individually.  Hiring a Designer

Professional designers know by heart all the tips, tricks, and techniques we’ve mentioned above, and then some. When you hire a designer, freelance or from an agency, you’re buying their expertise just as much as their time.

The problem is, no skilled designer works for free. The most glaring downside of hiring a designer is the cost — talented designers charge hundreds or even thousands of dollars for logo design.

Sometimes you can find cheaper alternatives on sites like Fiverr, but those sites have a poor record for delivering what they promised, and there’s tons of ex-Fiverr users who felt they were ripped off. The industry standard for a logo design is around $200, so if someone charges $5, you’re right to be suspicious.

Moreover, even if you have the money to spare, it can be difficult to find the right designer for you. Graphic design is a creative field, so there are innumerable artistic styles to choose from. You have to be sure to find a designer who both understands your vision and is capable of bringing it to life, but that can take time.

Lagos, Portugal – The Complete Guide to Lagos Portugal

Lagos is one of the Algarve’s top destination cities. Boasting a historic oldtown, modern marina, cultural attractions, with some incredible beaches and scenery it really combines much of what the Algarve is famous for. In fact, it’s probably got so much to do that a day trip to Lagos really doesn’t do it justice. It’s a perfect place to spend a long weekend, or longer holiday. With a wide variety of bars, pubs, and restaurants it’s a lively place that doesn’t suffer the same seasonality that some of the smaller resorts and towns in the Algarve suffer from.

How to Get to Lagos?

Lagos is easily accessible and by road it’s around 1 hour from Faro airport. It also has a well-located train station and central bus station. Its train station is on the Regional Algarve line travelling east-west across the Algarve, with connections to Lisbon in Tunes or Albufeira. Coaches are again available from most major towns in the Algarve and Lisbon too!

What to See and Do in Lagos

With its traditional centre and historic core, Lagos has plenty of culture and attractions to explore. It’s more than easy to lose yourself amongst its winding cobbled streets and architectural sights. However, for a full guide on the best things to see and do in Lagos, continue reading!

Lagos Marina

The modern marina is perhaps the best place to start. If you are arriving from Lagos’s trainstation you’ll have to cross the bridge here too! From the bridge across the marina its easy to follow Lagos’s palm tree and calçada lined promenade to the coast and it really sets the scene as an introduction to Lagos. After a short walk taking in the sounds and the sights of the marina, head back over the bridge to discover some of the local Lagos that really makes it tick.

Av. dos Escobrimentos Lagos

Municipal Market

A short walk down Avenue dos Descobrimentos will lead you to Mercado Municipal de Lagos. This large building built on the waterfront in 1924 holds the municipal market and is a key part of local life here. It’s mostly known for its daily fish market and if it’s your fist time visiting a market like this can be a tourist attraction in itself. If you’re interested in this, then its essential you arrive early, the market usually wraps up by around midday with most of the sellers having sold their stock! You’ll find these types of market buildings all over the Algarve and it’s our favourite way of buying local fish and produce!

Lagos Historic Centre and Streets – Praca de Gil Eanes and Praça Luís de Camões

Leaving the market and following Rua da Porta de Portugal will lead you into the historic centre of Lagos. This is the more pristine and commercial area, the pedestrianised calçada streets are lined with an array of bars, restaurants, and souvenir shops. During the summer season it offers a buzzing hectic atmosphere with alfresco diners mixing with street performers and buskers. This atmosphere is perhaps greatest on two busy plazas Praça Gil Eanes and Praça Luís de Camões, but the side streets leading to them are equally busy. Praça Luís de Camões is also the location of the famous ‘green tiled building’, you’ll see this building on much of the media and photos of Lagos.

Lagos Portugal Green House

However, there are secrets to be discovered on its less pristine and commercial streets so don’t be afraid to explore in any direction from these lively squares! Praç a Gil Eanes is also where you’ll find the city’s municipal tourist office – the Posto de Turismo de Lagos. If you’re looking for more activities and information, then it might be worth stopping here for a friendly chat! They’re relatively impartial and don’t push anyone to the commercial tours unless that’s what you ask for!

Praça do Infante D. Henrique – Prince Henry the Navigator Square

Perhaps it’s time to delve into Lagos’s important history and no better place to start than on Praça do Infante D. Henrique. If you hadn’t quite realised yet, Lagos had a large role in the Portuguese Age of Discoveries and the period that would follow. This is a large public square dedicated to Prince Henry the Navigator, the central figure of Portuguese expansion during the Age of Discovery. In this square you’ll find a statue of him, Lagos’s main church, and the Slave Market Museum.

Lagos Plaza Portugal

Former Slave Market and Museum – Mercado de Escravos – Núcleo Museológico Rota da Escravatura

In the early era of the slave trade, Portuguese ships would head to West Africa where they would enslave, trade for, or simply purchase slaves. Those slaves would originally be brought back to Europe to be sold. Although in later centuries the ships of the era would depart the African coast sailing to the New World directly. In 1444, this location would become the first slave market in Europe, when a Portuguese expedition returned from West Africa with 235 slaves. Although the building today is dated to around 1691 . Its dark past was confirmed in 2009, during renovations a large number of human skeletons would be discovered alongside other urban waste from the time period. Testing confirmed their west African origins and it’s believed they passed away due to illness caused by their living conditions while waiting for the market.

The museum attempts to reconcile this past with education and acknowledgement of the Portugal’s role in the slave trade. It’s a great and worthwhile museum for anyone looking to learn more. It’s open from 10.00-12.30, and 14.00-17.30. Entrance costs €3 for adults but half price for students, youths, and over 65s.

Igreja de Santa Maria de Lagos

Watching over the main square is the impressive Igreja de Santa Maria de Lagos. It dates to around 1498 although like many historic buildings in the Algarve has gone through much expansion, rebuilding, and restoration. It was severely damaged in the 1755 earthquake, although not quite as badly as the nearby Igreja de Santa Maria da Graça. That church was completely destroyed during the earthquake and Igreja de Santa Maria de Lagos would become the parish church of Lagos.

Lagos Portugal Main Church

Today, you’re faced with a large Neoclassical building comprising of a single nave and three side chapels. Compared to many churches in the region, it’s white washed front facade is understated. With its grand front facing the Praça do Infante, it is heavily symmetrical, featuring overlapping central elements, the entrance door, the large bay window, and an image niche. The symmetry is reinforced by its two matching bell towers. The interior is enriched with altarpieces from the second half of the 18th century. Behind the church, you’ll find the walls to the Castelo dos Governadores.

Castelo de Lagos Castelo dos Governadores

Up until this point you might have noticed the absence of walls, fortresses, and castles. Much of the more modern city has hidden them so far, but amongst the palm trees of Jardim da Constituição you’ll find the grand entrance and twin towers of The Castle of the Governors, also known as Castelo de Lagos. Originally, the entire medieval town was encircled by walls known as the Cerca Medieval. These walls – up to 7m thick – can still be visited on the western side of Lagos. Alongside the river, only small sections remain, and the grand portal or entrance known as Porta de São Gonçalo. Walking through the archway will lead you along a small back street behind the castle. You’ll also find here the district hospital, equally historic located in former residences of the governors.

Castelo de Lagos Portugal

Forte da Ponta da Bandeira – Fort of Lagos

Continuing along the castle walls to the coast will lead you to Forte da Ponta da Bandeira . The fort dates to around 1640 and was built in an effort to secure the Algarve from coastal raiders and pirates. Although it seems like it was built quite close to the city’s castle, this was deliberate, and its main function was to modernise the defence of the mouth of the river and cities quayside. Its location meant it could both protect access to the banks of the river and the south-eastern and eastern sides of the city walls. Anyone attempting to take the gates of the city would have to take the fortress first and vice versa. Don’t let its relatively squat walls fool you, at the time it was considered one of most advanced military structures in the Algarve and built with artillery fire in mind. Interestingly, the four sentry posts are now believed to be more modern additions to the original fortress.

Forte de Ponte da Bandeira Lagos

Today it is still considered the best-preserved 17th century fort in the Algarve. Inside you’ll find an exhibition on the Age of Discoveries and a small art exhibition of sculptures on its roof top. It’s open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00-12:30 and 14:00-17:30 and costs €2 to enter, but combined tickets with the city’s other museums are available.

Ponta da Piedade and the Grottos

One of the standout natural attractions of Lagos is Ponta da Piedade and its historic lighthouse Farol da Ponta da Piedade Lagos. It’s a small natural headland that’s about 3km from Lagos city centre. On approaching the lighthouse from the road it’s difficult to see what all the fuss is about. However, a short walk, and several steps down reveal its secrets.

Ponta da Piedade Lagos

Beautifully clear turquoise water laps the typical golden cliffs of the Algarve. Rising out of the water are limestone pillars in the typical golden Algarve colours. You’ll find an array of arches, caves, and sheer cliffs. Keen eyed visitors will also be able to spot birds circling and nesting on the many pillars. It’s a stunning feature and well worth a visit to take it all in. A steep staircase of 180 steps takes you to the waters edge, while several winding paths will take you east or west to see more scenery along the coast.

It’s possible to walk from Lagos and will take around half an hour, alternatively a taxi or uber will cost around €5-7 for a one way trip. During the summer season the tourist train also stops at the Ponta de Piedade approximately every hour.

Boat and Kayak Trips to Ponta de Piedade and the Grottos

Piedade Kayak Trip

The question we always get asked! Do you need to visit the grottos by boat or kayak? In our opinion you really don’t need to. Visiting by boat is a great experience to go further, through the caves, and experience many other caves that you can’t see by taking the steep steps. But this is not an essential part of the experience. Also, at the high season you will find so many boats doing the same thing that this actually makes the experience worse. You also can not leave the boat, so don’t expect to be allowed to swim around or through the caves! Kayaking is a slower paced way of visiting the caves and grottos , but once again suffers from the same fate. Large groups of kayaks and lots of boats visiting the same spots. These trips can be an expensive novelty – for an hour-long boat tour is around €20 for an adult and €10 for a child. Kayak tours taking around 2 hours cost around €30-40. All these trips can be booked in Lagos city centre or at the marina where they depart from. Or you can book online in advance of your visit!

The Best Beaches in Lagos

One of the best things about Lagos is its easy access to a variety of beaches. Trying to decide on the best beach to visit? Keep reading!

Praia dos Estudantes

Being the closest beach to Lagos this is one of the most popular. It’s famous for its caves, carved tunnels, and the so-called Roman Bridge – Ponte Romana de Lagos. The beach is relatively small and split into two halves by long cliffs. The cliffs give this small beach a sheltered and secluded feel. One important thing to consider is that this beach is not life guarded and doesn’t have the usual beach facilities – toilets, showers, and changing rooms. Due to its small size, tight access and lack of facilities the beach never gets too busy.

logos travel praca

The first section of the beach is the wider area, but if you head through the caves on the righthand side you’ll find an even smaller beach and the famous Roman Bridge. It’s not actually Roman and is named after its style – similarly to the Roman Bridge in Tavira! Isolated on the cliff you might be wondering what the bridge is for, it originally linked to a small fortress on the cliff that has long since collapsed. You can still see one of its walls, and the bricks that made it on the southern side of the cliff. At low tide Praia dos Estudantes links to Praia do Pinhão through the small caves at the right-hand side of the beach. From the main access stairs of Praia dos Estudantes you can also head left to Praia da Batata.

Praia do Pinhão

One step further, and even more secluded is Praia do Pinhão. It’s just slightly further away from Students beach and with even less facilities – there’s no restaurant or bars nearby and it’s slightly less popular. You can walk or paddle to it and for the adventurous its very rewarding. It offers calm waters, and those scenic cliffs Lagos is famous for.

Praia de Dona Ana

Although located further out of town than both Praia dos Estudantes and Praia do Pinhão, this is actually the most popular and busiest of Lagos’s beaches . On its cliff tops are a wide array of hotels and apartments which funnels many, many more people to this beach. For us, this is the busiest and most packed of Lagos’s beaches. For some people a packed beach is an essential part of their holiday, for others they want a bit more space and relaxation. If you fall into this last category then it might be best to avoid Praia da Dona Ana.

logos travel praca

At 300m the beach is the biggest in the Lagos area, with cliffs that extend out into the water at either end it forms a protective bay. Making it relatively calm and great for swimming. The rock formations also make it a great and protected area to try a little snorkeling to! It’s also life guarded and you’ll find sunbed and parasol rental available. This is Lagos’s most resort like beach!

It is possible to walk to Praia da Dona Ana from Lagos, but it will take around 20 minutes. It is also served by the regular bus line (Linha 2 – the blue line), and during the high season the tourist train. With limited parking above the beach it’s not really recommended to drive to the beach as it gets full quickly.

Praia do Camilo

Praia do Camilo is Lagos’s most internet famous beach. Whether it’s the most instagrammed location in the Algarve, or being voted TripAdvisor’s No.1 activity in Lagos. Praia do Camilo attracts a lot of attention.  A dramatic walk down 200 wooden steps will lead you to a seriously impressive beach. The car park is small and quickly gets overcrowded so it’s best to get here early. At the top of the wooden steps there is a small restaurant.

Meia Praia Beach – Praia de São Roque

If being stuck between sheer cliffs sounds claustrophobic to you, you’re not the only one. Lagos’s beaches are all relatively small and require access though steep stairs and cliffs. Fortunately, it has one very different beach on the opposite side of its river – Meia Praia. Meia Praia stretches for 5km from Lagos all the way to Ria de Alvor. It’s a stunning stretch of sand backed by sand dunes instead of cliffs. Different sections of the beach are life guarded, and you’ll find the full beach facilities. Towards it’s more empty stretches it’s also popular for windsurfing and kitesurfing. In fact, multiple operators offer water sports hire and lessons for all abilities! In Lagos, you really are spoiled for choice as to which beach to choose.

The Best Day Trips from Lagos?

Lagos is perfectly positioned in the West Algarve to offer a great base to explore the wider region. Your choice of day trips and excursions will only depend on how you want to enhance your Algarve experience.

Sagres – Sagres defines the western Algarve . It’s here the scenery is at its most dramatic, you’ll find sheer cliffs, wind swept beaches, and lots of surfing and wind sports. The town of Sagres is overlooked by the impressive Fortaleza de Sagres, and further west is the Farol do Cabo de São Vincente with a lighthouse that marks the far south western tip of Portugal. Between these two points you’ll find some impressive and deserted beaches, as well as popular spots for surfing. This is the Algarve at its wildest and most dramatic. It’s also easy to fit these activities into a day trip from Lagos. Prices start from around €45 for a small group tour!

logos travel praca

Monchique – If dramatic, and extreme don’t quite fit your day trip needs then perhaps it’s a good idea to take a step into the slower paced and traditional Algarve. Monchique is a delightful town positioned at the heart of a small mountain range called the Serra de Monchique. You’ll find a focus on relaxation, hiking, and a slower paced life. It’s charming streets and small squares are a lovely place to try some of the traditional Portuguese ‘mountain food’ and the local speciality Medronho . A fearsome spirit made with local fruit. A car rental is a great way to explore this area at your own pace. However small group tours can be organised for around €45 a person.

Silves – Silves is the historic capital of the Algarve and retains much of its history and culture. It has one of the best examples of a 13th century castle and its town retains many of its historic features from its long past. Balancing the history and culture are the usual features of Portuguese life. A lively market, arts and crafts, café culture and booming restaurant scene resulting in some of the best food you can find in the Algarve too. If you’re looking for some cultural and historical sites Silves is well worth making the trip to! Tours are available which include a full day trip to Monchique and Silves if you’d like to combine and make a full day out of it!

So, how Touristy is Lagos?

Despite what many people will say, Lagos has clearly been affected by mass tourism. The outskirts of the city are now lined with modern apartment blocks and hotels, and it can be hard to walk around town without having any number of tourist activities shoved in your face. Multiple stands and touts will try to get you to book tours, boat trips, and try to convince you to head to their bar or restaurant. Once the sun goes down, many of the bars, pubs and clubs open up. It’s growing reputation for nightlife is both good and bad. That said, it’s still a thriving city with a good mix of locals, seasonal residents, and tourists that stays quite busy year round.

5 thoughts on “Lagos, Portugal – The Complete Guide to Lagos Portugal”

hi there, thanks for the very informative site!! I’m a single woman travelling to Portugal and planning to spend a couple of days in Porto, three in Lisbon and maybe 3 days in Algarve (August) Was hoping to do beach time with actual swimming, some local exploring/walking etc. No car, so relaying on public transportation. Would you recommend Lagos or Faro as a base? Lagos has those beautiful beaches but seems quite busy. Faro seems to be a direct train trip from Lisbon and not as busy, but has Rio Formosa Natural park islands (that I just read about :). If you had to choose, which one would it be?

That’s a tough decision and you can do no wrong with either location, they are both fantastic places to base yourself. For me, I have a soft spot for Faro and the Ria Formosa . The beaches might be less dramatic, but you can’t beat the white sand and deserted island feel of some of the islands. For swimming as well, the waters in the East Algarve and the lagoon tend to be warmer and calmer than those around Lagos! However, Lagos has beaches you can walk to from the town, so heading to the beach is possible at any time. In Faro, you’ll need to rely on the bus or taxis to Praia da Faro, or ferries to the beach and various islands. It’s a tough decision, but for three days, with beaches and swimming being the focus I’d pick Faro. Let me know if you have any further questions!

I would recommend that you base in Olhao, actually. A less touristy place than Lagos and much more amenable and with easier public transport to great beaches than Faro.

Thanks a bunch for sharing your knowledge.

I live in the Los Angeles area and I hope to visit Lagos to visit the Slave Trade Museum in early August. I don’t see anywhere to buy tickets. Any advice?

Much appreciated.

Hello Jay, tickets can be bought directly at the museum entrance for €3!

I've been to 35 all-inclusive resorts. Here are 10 mistakes I always see first-timers make.

  • I've stayed at all-inclusive resorts around the world and seen first-timers make the same mistakes.
  • Don't go overboard on the frozen drinks, and never fill your plate during the first pass at a buffet.
  • Pack an insulated travel mug and check out water-sport rentals and amenities at sister properties.

Insider Today

Vacationing at an all-inclusive resort is very appealing for many travelers — and with good reason.

Being able to budget before you arrive and not having to worry about toting around cash or credit cards can alleviate a lot of travel headaches.

As a travel writer, I've been to dozens of all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean, Mexico, the Maldives, and more. During my stays, I see guests overlook many details that could make their sojourns much more enjoyable.

Whether you're planning your first trip to an all-inclusive resort or this is already your preferred style of vacation, here are 10 mistakes to avoid:

Not researching before booking

Not every all-inclusive resort is designed equally. Some have gorgeous pools and underwhelming beaches, or vice-versa.

Some cater to families with dedicated kids' and teens' clubs and activities, but others prohibit guests under 18. I've stayed at resorts that run the gamut.

The point is that having everything included in and of itself isn't necessarily enough of an appeal. Think about what you're looking for in a vacation, do your research, and look beyond the slick marketing and touched-up, wide-angle pics on the resort's website.

Overlooking VIP and concierge-level room options

The term "all-inclusive" doesn't mean what it used to.

These days, some resorts offer upgraded rooms and suites in certain areas of the property, with perks that may include butler service and dedicated lounges, restaurants, pools, or beach areas for these VIP guests.

Although spending more for these amenities isn't for everyone, they can bring a sense of luxury and civility to your vacation, especially if you're staying at a crowded resort where guests are forced to set out towels before breakfast to claim lounge chairs.

Not making dinner reservations when you check in

You may have access to a slew of restaurants at your resort, but that doesn't mean you can roll up to the host stand and automatically get a table, especially at peak dinner times (remember, everyone wants 7:30 p.m.).

To avoid disappointment, book tables for the popular spots right after you check in or before you arrive, if that's an option.

Keep in mind that depending on how many nights you're staying, you may be entitled to only a limited number of reservations for the à-la-carte concepts, so choose wisely.

My advice is to prioritize places that serve local cuisine. After all, you can get steak or pasta just about anywhere.

Filling your plate at the buffet before checking out all the options

All-inclusive resorts are often known for over-the-top buffets any time of day, with omelet and freshly-pressed-juice stations at breakfast and salad bars, local specialties, carving stations, and all the desserts at lunch and dinner.

Related stories

Grabbing a plate and reaching for the serving spoons before giving the area a look-see is a rookie move and can also lead to overeating and wasting food.

Each time before tackling a buffet, take a walk around, as options can change not only from meal to meal but daily as well. And make it a point to take a spoonful of something you've never tried.

Forgetting to bring an insulated travel mug

I used to roll my eyes at resort guests who'd tote their travel mugs up to the bar to be filled with their beverage of choice.

I thought they were being overly indulgent and exploiting the concept of "all-inclusive." But now I think they're on to something.

For one thing, insulated tumblers keep drinks colder for much longer and reduce the number of trips to the bar.

Beyond that, they're more environmentally friendly than all those single-use plastic cups. If you're bringing your Stanley and asking the bartender to fill it, though, tip them for going above and beyond.

Not tipping

Speaking of tipping, I'm well aware that some all-inclusive resorts invite guests to "leave their wallets at home."

But unless the property you're staying at has a strict policy against it, small tips can go a long way. Tipping the bartender at a crowded swim-up or lobby bar when you first order, for example, can result in quicker service for your second and third rounds.

If you have a fabulous server at dinner, leaving them some cash on the table is a nice gesture. And don't forget about the housekeeping staff, who keep your room free of sand and endlessly replenish your towels.

Ordering drinks wrong

Not all drinks at all-inclusive resorts are created equally.

Belly up to the lobby bar, which tends to stock top-shelf liqueur. Upgrade your piña colada by requesting it with dark or aged rum instead of white, which gives it much more flavor.

If you see Aperol or Campari on the back bar, you can be sure to get a decent spritz. Craft your own low-ABV libation by asking for sauvignon blanc or rosé mixed with club soda and a dash of simple syrup, garnished with a lemon wedge.

And try the local beer or wine, if it's available.

… and going all in on fruity, frozen drinks

A piña colada is decidedly delicious — I like to have one mid-morning, which I half-jokingly refer to as a "breakfast smoothie."

But if you keep hitting the swim-up bar to order blended concoctions, you're going to end up drinking a zillion calories and probably getting a stomachache or killer hangover to boot.

If you're on a quest to keep the buzz going, maybe mix things up a bit with a spirit mixed with soda water or a wine spritzer. And don't forget to hydrate with actual water to counter the effects of all that heat and sunshine.

Not taking advantage of the amenities at sister properties

Some resorts are part of sprawling complexes with several adjacent properties owned and operated by the same parent company.

If your stay includes reciprocity (such as a "stay at one, play at three" policy), you'll have access to other facilities, including additional pools, fitness centers, beach areas, and restaurants.

Making use of them is a great way to avoid boredom and make it seem as if your vacation includes stays at multiple hotels.

Not using the non-motorized water sports

Although Jet Ski, hoverboard, and parasailing rentals can be pricey, using simpler things such as stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, floats, and even Hobie-Cats are often included in the price of an all-inclusive stay.

Yet I often see them lined up on the beach all day, barely being used.

Sign the waiver, don a life jacket, and give them a try. And if you happen to be staying at a place where these water sports are popular, add your name to the waiting list first thing in the morning.

Powerful storm brings heavy rain and snow to Central Plains and Midwest, making travel 'almost impossible'

A powerful storm brought heavy winds, snow and rain to the central United States on Monday, making travel hazardous and "nearly impossible" in some areas, with extreme weather on both coasts set to last into Tuesday.

The National Weather Service said early Monday that the Northern and Central Plains into the Upper Midwest would be affected, with sleet and freezing rain reaching as far as the Mississippi Valley.

Minnesota could see snowfall of 6 to 12 inches an hour, bringing travel chaos to the Twin Cities.

A 51-year-old woman died Sunday in Burnsville, 15 miles south of Minneapolis, after her vehicle ran off the road and struck a tree, police said.

Minnesota State Patrol named her as Elizabeth Evans of Lakeville and said she was driving north on Interstate 35E approaching County Road 42 at the time of the accident, NBC News affiliate station KARE 11 reported .

The state patrol said there had been at least 328 crashes reported as of 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, involving 13 injuries. More than 200 vehicles spun out or slid off roads, while 10 semi-trailers jack-knifed.

Some 20 million people across the continental United States, from the West Coast to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, were subject to weather warnings Sunday.

California was rocked by a spring storm on Sunday, with hailstones the size of quarters and winds as strong as 60 mph, the NWS said. Lake Tahoe received about a foot of snow, potentially a boost for ski resorts — although several were forced to close ski lifts on Saturday after recording wind gusts measuring more than 90 mph.

Dramatic video captured the moment the L.A. Fire Department rescued a 35-year-old woman from the Los Angeles River, fast-moving and swollen from the storm waters. She was picked out of the rapids by a firefighter lowered by a rescue helicopter. She was taken to a hospital with only minor injuries and hypothermia, the fire department said.

Hundreds of traffic accidents across the Northeast were reported to police overnight as icy conditions took hold.

Over the weekend a powerful weather system battered the tri-state area , with more than 2 feet of snow and downed power lines in some parts. Vermont saw as much as 30 inches of snow, the weather service said.

More than 100,000 customers were still without power in Maine, along with 22,000 in New Hampshire and 12,000 in New York, as of 6:30 a.m. ET Monday, according to PowerOutage.us, which tracks energy connections.

Central Maine Power, the state’s largest utility, said in a statement early Monday that it had returned power to half the 200,000 customers affected by the storm, after responding to some 775 emergency calls.

An adventuring party looks across fields at the town of Vernwerth in Dragon’s Dogma 2

If you just started Dragon’s Dogma 2 , it might have come as a shock that this sprawling open-world, role-playing epic is missing one common feature: fast travel. Well, it’s not quite missing, but it’s extremely limited in ways that run counter to the normal rhythms of this hugely popular genre.

The way it usually works in open-world games is this: You set forth on an adventure, heading out to unexplored regions. As you explore, you unlock fast travel points that make it easy to return to those areas. It takes a matter of seconds to get back to town when you need to rest, shop, or turn in quests. Even in games that prioritize organic exploration and discovery — like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom — fast travel is available, and usually free. It’s just accepted as a necessary addition to make these huge game worlds manageable.

Dragon’s Dogma director Hideaki Itsuno and his team at Capcom feel differently about it. In keeping with the many ways Dragon’s Dogma 2 intentionally makes your life difficult — restricting game saves to prevent save-scumming, for example — the approach to fast travel puts realism and immersion over convenience.

There are, in fact, three automatic travel options in the game: oxcarts, ropeways, and Portcrystals . Most wouldn’t really call oxcarts fast travel since they’re painfully slow, only run along a few set routes between towns, and, although you can nap to pass the time, your journey might be interrupted by bandit or monster attacks. Ropeways come with their own hazards , as they’re subject to aerial attack — and it’s a long way down.

Portcrystals resemble traditional fast travel, but with a couple of huge caveats. You need to use a Ferrystone to warp to one, and these are a very rare and precious resource. There are only a handful of Portcrystals in major locations across the entire game. If you can obtain your own Portcrystal you can place it wherever you like, but these items are rarer still.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 party at a campsite

All this means that during general play, fast travel is out, either because it’s too expensive or too inconvenient. You’re going to have to make your way on foot, and it’s going to take time — especially considering that nighttime hikes are inadvisable, so you’re encouraged to make camp for the night. Sounds tedious, right? Why did Capcom design the game this way?

The answer Itsuno has given in interviews is the one designers often give when they explain why they’ve chosen to cut back on travel convenience. To paraphrase: It’s about making sure players spend their time out in the world discovering stuff. “We’ve put a lot of work into designing a game where you can stumble across someone and something will happen, so while it’s fine if it does have fast travel, we decided to design the map in a way that the journey [itself] could be enjoyed,” Itsuno told IGN ,

It’s true that Dragon’s Dogma 2 has an unusually dense map that’s teeming with activity and primed for all sorts of random happenstance — even more so than the recent Zeldas. The more players zip themselves from point to point across this dynamic anecdote-generation machine, the less opportunity there would be for the unexpected discoveries and events that make the game so memorable, whether it’s a fight with an accident-prone cyclops or crossing paths with a pawn who might change your life. But, in truth, Itsuno only gave half an answer.

Yes, open-world games like this should be about the journey. But most of them are specifically about the journey of discovery. Dragon’s Dogma 2 is also about the return journey, making your way back, often by a different route to see what else you can find. It’s about conserving your resources, balancing the risk and reward of exploration, thinking about how much you can carry, and keeping a wary eye on the sun as it descends toward the horizon.

I love this stuff. I love anything that makes me feel present in the world the developers have created and that makes distances feel real. I love games that resist the habit of optimizing time spent playing them ; that, with a gentle but firm hand, encourage the player to just live in the moment, immersed in their adventure, rather than to play with one eye on a to-do list.

A pair of harpies attack an Arisen and their pawns on a ropeway gondola in a screenshot from Dragon’s Dogma 2

Travel is a hugely important part of interaction with game worlds — both practically and emotionally — so I get why Itsuno and his team pushed back against the impulse to skip it. Even though fast travel is easy in Spider-Man 2 , my son never uses it because he just loves web-slinging so much. (You should see him go soaring and pirouetting through New York City — it’s poetry in motion.) I know many people were bored by the long, featureless sailing trips of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker , but those moments of wind-blown calm, scored by the quiet rushing of the waves against the hull of Link’s little boat, are some of my most treasured gaming memories, a permanent happy place. Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding makes a whole game out of packing your bag and going for a hike, and its rugged landscape is the only other character that game really needed.

I don’t think World of Warcraft would have become half the sensation it did were it not for its approach to travel. When building the MMO two decades ago, Blizzard insisted that there would be no loading screens breaking up its huge landmasses, and that — with the exception of a Hearthstone item that would take you back to the inn of your choice on a one-hour cooldown — the only way to cross its distances would be to fly across them in real time by air taxi, watching the landscape scroll past below. In theory, this was dead time; while in the air, you couldn’t do anything but chat to your friends. But it was one of the things that made that world feel so real.

Restricting fast travel isn’t the only way to foster this kind of relationship with a game world, but it’s one of the most effective. And, for Dragon’s Dogma 2 , it was the right one. (Personally, I would have cut the Portcrystals completely; they don’t feel like they fit the world, and introducing fast travel only to make it awkward and expensive is a bit too contrarian. The lumbering oxcarts and treacherous ropeways fit right in, though.) Capcom’s game is a capricious, random, surprising, brilliantly conceived adventure simulator, and one of the few games to recognize that adventures are about the journey home home as well as heading out. If it had allowed you to warp back at the end of a quest, it would simply have cut itself in half.

“I’m Not Going Out Like That”

You don’t really need to avoid boeing’s 737 max when you travel. here’s how to do it anyway..

The chances of dying in a cataclysmic air accident—you and your fellow passengers consumed by a molten fireball, cascading down toward the Earth’s surface—remain astoundingly low. Roughly 115,000 commercial airplanes take off and land every day, and a significant number of them are made by Boeing, which holds a 42 percent market share in the industry. So, despite those two criminal, reputation-altering 737 Max disasters in 2018 and 2019, and a slew of nonfatal but viscerally horrifying mechanical failures that have recently beset the company ( door plugs detaching over the Pacific Northwest, tires flinging off hulls , cockpit issues causing passengers to ricochet off the ceiling, and so on), the odds are good that when you step onto a Boeing aircraft, you will safely arrive at your destination.

And yet, despite those logical assurances, when I booked a trip down to Miami earlier this week, I did everything I could to guarantee my spot on an Airbus—Boeing’s eternal French nemesis, and a company that is not currently mired in spiraling controversy. (If you’re curious, JetBlue maintains a fleet made up entirely of Airbus planes, and they fly to South Florida from New York multiple times a day.) I have been afflicted by a fear of flying my whole life—on long-haul trips, I tend to spend most of the duration staring at the live map glowing on the back of the seat in front of me, constantly calculating just how far I am from the nearest airport in case of an emergency diversion. But over the past few months, my phobia has become a mainstream malady. It seems as if everyone, even those freaks who claim to enjoy the quaking of turbulence, is doing what they can to avoid suspect Boeing engineering.

“I’m flying down to Houston in late April, and most of the flights that went there were on United, and a lot of them that matched up with the times were all on Boeing,” Andy Hirschfeld, a reporter based in New York, told me. “I knew it was incredibly unlikely for anything to happen, but you’re not hearing any stories about Airbus right now, so I booked a ticket on JetBlue. That’s a risk in its own right. There’s only one or two flights to Houston from New York a day on that carrier. If it gets delayed or canceled, I’m screwed.”

Hirschfeld is lucky that his circumvention of Boeing required him only to find another flight. Others are going to far more drastic measures to allay their fears. Ellory Smith, a comedian in Los Angeles, told me that for an upcoming trip to Phoenix, she is considering making the brutal six-hour drive on Interstate 10, rather than boarding a Boeing jet. “It’s probably more dangerous to drive,” she said. “[But] vehicular death is so baked into our lives, whereas a plane crash is still shocking.” I’m with her. An 18-wheeler decimating my Toyota Corolla into a pile of glass and chrome sounds, frankly, so much more appealing than getting sucked out of a porthole at 30,000 feet.

Similarly, Derek Robertson, another journalist and a friend, told me that he added almost $1,000 worth of airfare for a work trip to this year’s SXSW to ensure that he would be sitting on an Airbus safe and sound. (“I’m not going out like that,” he said.) And last week, NBC tracked down a number of passengers who went so far as to switch their Boeing flights, after they were booked, to aircraft they found more reassuring. Leonyce Moses, a consultant in Virginia, ate a $70 fee for the trouble. “It was worth it for my safety,” she told NBC. In other words, Americans are in the midst of a Boeing reckoning. We may not fear death, but we certainly fear death like that .

Whether or not you find this to be rational behavior or a ridiculous overreaction likely hinges on your own assessment of the drama. As stated, midflight catastrophes—even during this concerning swoon in aviation history—are incredibly unlikely. By the time you have finished reading this article, several Boeing jets will have completed their journeys, with no incidents to report. Still, the outrage—and subsequent soft boycott—of Boeing’s product is fairly understandable. This many botches in such a short time frame is unconscionable, and there are real questions about the increased financialization of the company’s culture, which some have claimed has diminished its aerospace roots. Public pressure has mounted to the point that the company’s CEO, Dave Calhoun, resigned on Monday , so clearly Boeing is feeling the burn. (Should I mention the whistleblower who turned up dead from a gunshot wound? I’m trying to avoid New World Order ideation here, but, well, you know .)

However, if you’re the sort of person who wants to avoid Boeing aircraft regardless of the likelihood of a safety debacle, I asked Blaise Waguespack, a professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University who specializes in the air travel industry, about the best ways to secure ourselves a seat on an Airbus when we purchase airfare. The solution is pretty simple: Just research the nitty-gritty logistical specifics of your flight, which are easy to find if you know where to look. When you book travel on Kayak or Google Flights—perhaps the two biggest third-party airfare retailers in North America—the specific model you’ll be boarding, Waguespack notes, is typically listed in the minor transactional details, a quarter of a scroll down the page. For instance: I just pulled up another New York–to–Miami flight in early May on Kayak, and in faint gray lettering on the itinerary, I can read that Spirit would be booking me on an Airbus 321 on the trip down and a 320neo on the way back up. You’ll be able to find similar clarity on most airline homepages as well. I put the same query into United and read about the many, many Maxes that would happily ferry me down to South Florida. (Yikes!)

“All that information is there,” said Waguespack. “If you’re a loyal flyer and you know your airline has a mixed fleet—where sometimes you’re on an Airbus and sometimes you’re on a Boeing, like United and Delta—if you expand the search parameters, you’ll be able to see the plane type.”

However, if you don’t want to go through that rigmarole—and if you want to avoid extreme edge cases, like your Airbus getting swapped out for a Boeing at the last minute due to a cancellation or a delay—Waguespack recommends simply looking up the fleet makeup of whatever airline you’re set to travel on. (As mentioned, JetBlue is a Boeing-free airline; same with Spirit, Frontier, and Allegiant.) Yes, booking on Spirit to avoid boarding a Max is quite the devil’s bargain, but it’s nice to have the option.

For what it’s worth, Waguespack has a slightly more measured take on the recent rash of Boeing-related dysfunction. He notes that many of the incidents that have made headlines occurred on United flights that were using Boeing engineering. Does blame lie with the manufacturer or the airline? The chicken or the egg? Waguespack doesn’t have the answer. Right now nobody does. So, until they do, and the abyssal depths of Boeing’s protocol degradation are revealed for all to see, I won’t be taking my chances. Send me home ensconced in the dulcet rumble of an Airbus jet. Nobody wants to spend the entirety of a flight side-eyeing the emergency exit.
