The Sun is our nearest star. Because of that, we can study it better than any other star.

And when you do that, you see that the Sun isn't as boring as it may look from earth!

In the following `Trip through the Sun' you'll see flames on the Sun larger than ten earths, winds going 1000 mph, and you'll see how the earth eventually will be scorched by the dying Sun.

The duration of this journey is about 20 minutes. It shows spectacular images and MPEG animations of solar flares, sun spots, magnetic fields and solar eclipses, and explains a lot about the science of the sun and the influence it has on the solar system.

Solar System Tour

Solar System Scope is an incredibly accurate solar system tour, allowing you to explore the solar system, the night sky and outer space in real-time.

All of the objects on the tour are accurately positioned based on where they are right this very second, and the tour contains interesting facts and information about the many objects in space.

Every now and then, don’t you wish you could just pack your bags and jet off on an exciting, awe-inspiring journey across our breathtaking solar system? Ever wondered what it’d be like to skim past the gas giants or marvel at the icy rings of Saturn up close? Well, while Elon Musk is still working on making that a reality, I’ll be your virtual guide on a one-of-a-kind solar system tour – an enlightening adventure, without the risk of being lost in space!

Our journey starts right here, on our very own life-logged planet, Earth. As we embark on this space voyage, we’ll traverse through the neighboring rocky planets, glide past the incredible asteroid belt, and sweep across the majestic giants, their icy rings and numerous satellites. Towards the end, we’ll be gracefully riding the gravitational waves, leaving the outer edges of our solar system, where you’ll get a rare glimpse of the enigmatic region populated by icy objects known as the Kuiper Belt.

But before we start our engines and head for the inky vastness of space, it’s important to remember that although space explorations have given us a fair idea about these celestial bodies, there’s still an ocean of mysteries waiting to be unfolded. The real beauty of our cosmic neighborhood lies in its sheer vastness, diversity and the endless scope of discovery that it harbors. From the scorching heat of Mercury to the frigid reaches Pluto and beyond, brace yourself for an  out-of-this-world experience !

The Exciting Experience of a Solar System Tour

Imagine the prospect of a real-life  solar system tour . It’s akin to a child’s joy on their first trip to a theme park. A hands-on space exploration that goes beyond the textbooks, casting a mesmerizing spell on minds open to the wonders of the universe.

Propelling past Earth’s atmosphere, you’d first mark a date with our closest celestial neighbor—the Moon. The Apollo astronauts traversed its dusty plains more than five decades ago. Yet for us, it would still be a once-in-a-lifetime event. Next on the itinerary is our scorched twin, Venus. Here’s a fun fact,  Venus  is the only planet in our solar system that spins opposite to Earth.

Then we arrive at the pièce de résistance: our bloodline, the Sun. During the visit, you could learn more about its billion-year lifespan and its constant solar storms. The solar system tour would not be complete without a stopover at Mars. Known as the Red Planet, it’s been the subject of numerous  space missions , most notably the Mars Rover mission seeking evidence of life.

Here’s a quick tabular overview:

From the asteroid belt to Jupiter’s turbulent storms, every celestial body sits ready to unfold its story. With the tour continuing to the outer reaches of the universe, you’d experience the icy solitude of the outer planets like Neptune and Uranus.

However, we shouldn’t forget about an often overlooked, yet significant part of our solar system. Those are the  comets  and asteroids, remnants from the formation of our system almost 4.6 billion years ago.

Being part of a solar system tour , you wouldn’t just be observing the cosmos. Instead, you’d immerse yourself in a cosmic ocean, each wave presenting a new revelation about the universe. It’s not merely an experience; it’s the chance to physically connect with the vast expanse of space that usually only feels a speck away in the night sky. This would indeed be a ticket to the greatest show in the cosmos.

Traveling through the Solar System: What to Expect

Imagine blasting off into the cosmos on a spaceship designed for a thrilling expedition! As we set off on our  solar system tour , the things we’ll perceive are extraordinarily vast and stunningly diverse. This voyage will give us a newfound respect for the majesty of the cosmic neighborhood we inhabit.

Our first stop will be  Mercury , the closest planet to the sun. It’s a small, bare, and intensely heated planet. We shouldn’t forget the sunscreen as daytime temperatures can soar up to 800 degrees Fahrenheit!

Next, we’ll swing by  Venus  – the hot, hurricane-ridden planet awaits us with an unbelievably corrosive atmosphere. It’s interesting to note that Venus rotates in the opposite direction to most planets, including Earth.

Continuing our journey, we’ll visit  Mars . Mars has the tallest volcano in the solar system, Olympus Mons, three times the height of Mount Everest. And don’t forget about the giant canyon, Valles Marineris, which would stretch from New York to Los Angeles if it was on Earth!

Yet, our extraordinary adventure won’t be all about planets. We’ll have a chance to marvel at the  Asteroid Belt , a ring composed of millions of rocky bodies. This celestial obstacle course lies between Mars and Jupiter.

Of course, we’ll also encounter the majestic giants of our solar system. The gas giants,  Saturn  and  Jupiter , as well as the icy giants,  Uranus  and  Neptune , will present captivating sights. We’ll see Jupiter’s Great Red Spot, an anticyclonic storm larger than Earth, and Saturn’s intricate ring system. Uranus and Neptune, on the other hand, will dazzle us with their stunning cool-blue hues.

Admittedly, going further to behold the beauty of  Pluto , once a planet, now a dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, caps off this unique expedition. The journey end will leave us with an understanding of the infinite yet harmonious chaos that forms our solar system.

So buckle up, folks. The adventure through our heavenly bodies is par for the cosmic course. Our solar system, with its varied and breathtaking celestial bodies, offers a journey like no other. It’s going to be a wild ride! Just remember, despite the vastness of space, we’re never too far away from our home planet, Earth.

Conclusion: Reflecting on Our Intergalactic Journey

Wraping up, we’ve journeyed past planets and stars, across cosmic fields, and brushed alongside cosmic neighbors throughout our solar system tour.  Isn’t it just incredible that we live in such an expansive universe that holds so many unseen wonders?

Throughout our intergalactic expedition, we’ll forever remember the unique characteristics of each celestial body. Let’s just take a quick review again:

  • Mercury,  with its sweltering days and frigid nights,
  • Venus,  stunningly bright yet shrouded in clouds,
  • Mars,  our red neighbor that pique our curiosity about extraterrestrial life,
  • Jupiter’s  giant gas storms,
  • Saturn’s  enchanting rings,
  • Uranus  and  Neptune’s  icy allure,
  • And let’s not forget about our little cosmic sibling, the dwarf planet  Pluto .

Something important stood out during our journey, invoking a sense of interconnectivity. Each exists in symbiosis, drawing and relying upon the sun’s energy. Just like how everything on Earth is connected, so are we connected to our cosmic counterparts.

So, what’s the takeaway? Should we plan to pack our bags and ship off to Mars? I’ll leave that up to you. What I will stress, though, is the importance of space exploration. It’s not just a testament to human curiosity, it’s a driver of scientific breakthroughs and a reminder of the vast unexplored universe that lies ahead of us.

It might seem frightening, or perhaps intriguing. Yet isn’t that the essence of exploration? Stepping into the unknown, learning new things, using that newfound knowledge to improve and innovate. And in doing so, perhaps we’ll find more about ourselves along the way.

To sum it up, our universe offers infinite mysteries and wonders for us to discover. As we move forward, let’s keep looking up and fueling our curiosity. Remember, no question is a bad question and our solar system tour just has begun. As we continue to explore the stars, who knows what we’ll uncover? The only thing for sure is that the stars await, ready to share their secrets with us.

Going-to-the-Sun Road is a highlight not to be missed during your Glacier visit.

The Road spans 50 miles and crosses the Continental Divide at Logan Pass. During your traverse you will see impressive glaciers, beautiful valleys, cascading waterfalls, towering mountains and colorful wildflowers. Most visitors will also witness wildlife sightings on their trip across the Sun Road!

There are alternatives to driving your own vehicle across Going-to-the-Sun Road including the famous Red Bus Tours and the complimentary National Park Service Shuttles.

Due to the mountainous terrain of the highway, it is only open seasonally. Opening and closing dates depend on weather. Don't forget to check the current road status before you travel. If portions of the road are closed, don't worry, there are still plenty of other scenic drives in and around Glacier National Park.

The Road has so many features you won’t want to miss. It can be hard to decide which ones to stop and see along your traverse of this engineering marvel. The interactive map and guide below will help you narrow it down.

Travel Tips

Start early.

Due to its popularity, the Going-to-the-Sun Road can be very busy. The parking lot at Logan Pass is usually full between 9:30 and 4:00, which can cause road delays and difficulty finding parking. Not only will you beat traffic with an early start, but animals are often more active earlier in the day to avoid the midday heat.

Know Your Route

While the Going-to-the-Sun Road is very safe and has proper barriers, more timid drivers may want to drive the Going-to-the-Sun Road from East (St. Mary) to West. The majority of the East-West route is on the inside next to rock walls, rather than closer to the road’s edge. To drive a loop, you can drive from St. Mary to West Glacier along the Going-to-the-Sun Road then travel along Highway 2 to Highway 89 to return to St. Mary.

There are no services along the 33 mile stretch of road between Lake McDonald and the Rising Sun Motor Inn. Make sure to bring enough water and snacks for your days’ adventures. A picnic at Logan Pass or one of the scenic turnouts is a great way to enjoy a midday break!

Prepare for Changing Weather

Glacier’s weather is often highly variable. Temperatures at Logan Pass are usually at least ten degrees cooler than those at low elevations. We recommend dressing in layers, bringing a hat to shield yourself from sun and having a rain jacket handy in case the weather changes.

Mileage Chart

All distances given in miles and based on the shortest available route on the Going-to-the-Sun Road. Driving times will vary depending on traffic, road construction and how often you like to stop to take in the views.

Other Scenic Drives of Glacier National Park

Polebridge and the North Fork are some of Glacier’s best kept secrets and a great place to spend a day in the park. From West Glacier, head into Glacier National Park and turn left onto the Camas Road at the first four-way stop. The Camas Road will take you several miles through the park around the aptly named Huckleberry Mountain. You will then exit the park and come to a junction with the North Fork Road (the North Fork Road is un-paved and can be rough). Turn right to head North towards Polebridge, which is another 13 miles up the road. The North Fork Road follows the North Fork of the Flathead River and has amazing views into Glacier National Park. Once you reach Polebridge, stop at the Mercantile for a delicious pastry and if you have some extra time, drive another seven miles into Glacier National Park to Bowman Lake.

Looking Glass Highway, also known as Montana 49, is a small stretch of road between East Glacier and St. Mary. From St. Mary, head south on Highway 89 roughly 19 miles then bear right onto Highway 49. The highway winds through mountains and hills just outside of Glacier National Park and provides beautiful views into the Two Medicine Valley. Eight miles from the 89 and 49 junction you’ll reach the Two Medicine entrance to Glacier National Park. The Two Medicine Valley has a campground, small camp store, boat tour and a plethora of hiking trails. Continue on Highway 49 another 4 miles to reach Glacier Park Lodge in the village of East Glacier.

US Highway 2 follows the southern border of Glacier National Park and the Middle Fork of the Flathead River. There are countless scenic views into Glacier National Park and of the picturesque river. Travelling west from East Glacier, your first stop will be Marias Pass roughly 12 miles from East Glacier, where you’ll cross the continental divide. In another 14 miles you’ll reach the Goat Lick Overlook in the small town of Essex, Montana. Goat Lick will be a turnout on the south side of the road. It is a salt lick that was built to attract mountain goats and funnel them into a tunnel allowing safe passage across the highway. The next 30 miles of the drive to West Glacier are some of the most scenic. There are many turnouts along the drive, including some where you can watch boaters take on the whitewater sections of the Flathead River.

The Solar System

The Solar System is our local neighborhood in space. This incredible system of celestial objects contains a star, eight planets , 200 known moons , and a variety of other objects such as asteroids , comets , and dwarf planets . At the center the is an average-sized, middle aged yellow star known as the Sun . The eight planets and other bodies orbit the Sun in a perpetual dance that has been going on for nearly five billion years. The planets in this system range in size from small, rocky worlds to gigantic balls of gas and ice. These planets are orbited by a multitude of moons that vary from asteroid-sized chunks of rock to nearly planet-sized worlds with atmospheres of their own.

The Wanderers

For centuries, people have looked into the skies and wondered about the lights in the sky. They soon noticed that several of the lights seemed to move across they sky at regular intervals. They thought these objects were wandering stars, so they called them "planets," which comes from the Greek word meaning "wanderers." At the time, it was commonly believed that the Earth was at the center of the universe. Therefore, these lights that moved across the sky must be divine emissaries of the gods. Because of this, they gave them heavenly names. These five wandering lights became known as Mercury, Venus Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn.

The Renaissance

As the dark ages gave way to the renaissance, scientific knowledge started to evolve. People began to see the five visible planets as celestial bodies that orbited the Earth. In the 16th century, many enlightened scientists such as Galileo, Copernicus, and Kepler supported a new model for the Solar System in which the Sun was at the center and the planets revolved around it. With the invention of the telescope, it was discovered that the Solar System was much more complex than previously thought. The moons of Jupiter and the rings of Saturn were revealed. It was the beginning of a new age of discovery.

Age of Exploration and Discovery

As astronomers searched the night sky for more planets, Uranus and Neptune were soon found, followed by the discovery of a ninth planet to be named Pluto . Ever more powerful telescopes revealed new moons around Mars , Jupiter , and Saturn . By the time we reached the 20th century, we had the technology to leave our planet and explore the Solar System up close. A rare planetary alignment made the Voyager missions possible. Launched in 1977, these two spacecraft revealed never-before-seen details of the planets and discovered many new moons. By the late 20th century, it was discovered that Pluto was only one of many small objects in the outer Solar System. In 2006, the international astronomical community voted to demote Pluto the the status of dwarf planet, bringing the official number of planets in out Solar System back down to eight.

The Solar System Today

The Solar System as we know it today consists of the Sun, the eight planets and their moons, asteroids, comets, dwarf planets, and other assorted objects in the Kuiper belt and the Oort cloud beyond Neptune. The eight planets all orbit the Sun in the same direction and in the same plane, known as the ecliptic . The axis of rotation for most of the planets is nearly perpendicular to the ecliptic. The only exception is Uranus, which rotates on its side for unknown reasons.

The Sun is the power plant that drives the Solar System. Its immense gravity holds the planets in orbit. Its energy drives weather systems on the planets with atmospheres . The Sun also provides energy for the vast majority of life on Earth. Without the Sun, it is unlikely that there would be any life forms inhabiting our blue planet.

The Solar System is divided into two main regions. The inner planets consist of the four rocky, or terrestrial planets, Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars, while the outer planets consists of the two gas giant planets, Jupiter, Saturn, and the two ice giant planets, Uranus, and Neptune. The asteroid belt divides these two regions. The inner planets are composed mainly of rocky materials such as silicates in their outer crusts and mantles and metals such as iron and nickel in their in their inner cores. The outer planets are composed mainly of gases such as hydrogen and helium.

Beyond the orbit of the last planet, Neptune, lies two regions known as the Kuiper belt and the Oort cloud. The Kuiper belt is the home of dwarf planets and other small, planet-like bodies. Much farther out, the Oort cloud is the home of the icy comets. Very little is known about the objects in these two regions, but NASA's New Horizons spacecraft is scheduled to reach Pluto in 2015 and may solve many of the mysteries of the last frontier of the Solar System.

The Sun: Front and Center A Grand Tour of the Solar System

Presented in partnership with george mason university observatory, evening lecture/seminar, select your tickets.

tour of the sun

The tour begins with the 4.5-billion-year-old star at the center of the solar system, the Sunday As the most massive object around, the sun’s gravity is the glue that holds the solar system together, keeping everything from the biggest planets to the smallest bits of debris in orbit around it. The sun’s activity, from powerful eruptions to the steady stream of charged particles it sends out, influences the nature of space throughout the solar system and provides a protective bubble that shields the planets from damaging galactic radiation. A hot, glowing ball of mostly hydrogen and helium, the Sun emits its own radiation—mainly visible, ultraviolet, x-ray, and infrared. It is the most important source of energy for life on Earth. George Mason University astrophysicist and cosmologist Hakeem Oluseyi shines a light on what astronomers already know about the sun and what they are still trying to understand.

Series Information

The Grand Tour of the Solar System series treks to the Sun and the four inner terrestrial planets before traveling outward to the asteroid belt, four Jovian planets, and beyond. At each session, a professional astronomer explores a solar system body, presenting the latest research.

Following the talk and a question-and-answer period, Peter Plavchan , a professor of physics and astronomy at George Mason University, brings that night’s sky right into participants’ living rooms via remote control of the university observatory, weather permitting.

Testimonials

Highlight of our gnp trip.

Our trip with Sun Tours was the highlight of our GNP trip. We were a family of 9, ranging in age from 6-71. Meri, our tour guide, was absolutely incredible. She did a tremendous job of making sure that everyone was involved in the tour. Her knowledge of the area is unparalleled, and we felt so fortunate that we were able to spend the day with her. The tour took us from the East Side of the park around the southern border (where Meri stopped to show us some little known waterfalls which were amazing). After looping through the southern portion, we accessed the West Side of GNP and started on Going to the Sun Road. Meri took us on the Trail of the Cedars, which was a great hike for all members of our family. Once we started on the GTS road, we were so grateful that it was Meri driving and not us. The scenery and architecture is really something to behold. Meri made frequent stops for photos and sightseeing. Once GTS road was completed, we wrapped up our trip in St. Mary and enjoyed a nice lunch at the lodge. If you are looking for a great way to enjoy all the scenery and wildlife (we saw bears, moose, deer, and mountain goats), then Sun Tours is the option for your trip.

Great Tour With Dan

We had a great tour with Sun Tours during our August trip to Glacier. What I really would like to stress is what a great tour guide Dan is. We were that party that was late because we got some wrong info from the front desk of the place we were staying at and he waited for us. Things seem to go down hill with us because we also held up the tour at Logan Pass and again Dan was very patient and waited. He is a walking talking Glacier guide book and he has a great laugh and told entertaining stories. I recommend the day long tour, there are lots of stops and great places to take pictures! Thanks Dan for your patience and incredible knowledge of Glacier!

Fantastic Tour

We had the pleasure of using your bus service to tour Glacier National Park. Our driver was Kimma. The tour was sensational, the sites speak for themselves and our guide was wonderful. Kimma provided great history of the park and local wildlife and vegetation as well a Native American perspective that enthralled our group. Her driving was excellent as she navigated those narrow hairpin turns on the Going to the Sun road. I am happy to write a posting on Trip Advisor recommending your organization. Again – cheers from our whole group for Kimma.

Excellent in Every Way

We booked a tour with Sun Tours via email & over the phone. Sun Tours picked us up at our motel, then we toured Glacier National Park for more than 7 hours, which included a stop for lunch. Our guide, Jeremiah, was wonderful. Very knowledgeable, friendly, excellent driver. I highly recommend.

Sun Tour with Meri in East Glacier

My partner Jeff and I reserved this tour specifically because we were interested in learning more about the region’s tribal history. Meri was an excellent tour guide, providing a great deal of information about the park itself from the perspective of the Blackfeet Nation. We were pleased to learn that the tour company was formed to provide tourists with an accurate representation of the Tribe’s history and relationship with the land that the park is located on. She was a calm presence while driving on the Going to the Sun Road as well! We both learned a great deal and visited the tribal museum in Browning the next day, which was excellent as well. Thank you for providing tourists with an important resource that delivers the comprehensive history of this beautiful land and the Blackfeet Nation’s stewardship of it.

Lester, our guide and driver, was absolutely fantastic. He gave us volumes of information, far more than we could remember in a professional and folksy way. He brought significant family, cultural and historical information into the mix making the entire experience very personal. He leaves us as a true friend, Thank you Sun Tours for connecting us to Lester!

If you would like to receive updates regarding added tour availability, tour routes, and all things Sun Tours, please sign up for our brand new email list! We look forward to accommodating you on Going to the Sun Road this summer!

Teotihuacan: Planning Your Visit

tour of the sun

TripSavvy / Taylor McIntyre

Teotihuacán

Teotihuacán (pronounced "tay-oh-tee-wah-KAHN," with the emphasis on the final syllable) is a large and majestic archaeological site located about 25 miles (40 kilometers) north of Mexico City . It's famous for its large pyramids dedicated to the sun and the moon, but the site also contains beautiful murals and carvings and several museums through which you can explore the city's fascinating history. This is one of the largest and most important archaeological sites in Mexico, and a must-visit attraction on a trip to Mexico City.

The construction of the city of Teotihuacan began around 200 BC. Since the ethnic group and the language spoken by the inhabitants of Teotihuacan is unknown, they are referred to simply as "Teotihuacanos." At its peak between 300 and 600 CE, this was one of the biggest cities in the world with around 200,000 inhabitants.

Teotihuacan was abandoned around the year 800, which is considered the end of the Classic Period in Mesoamerica. The causes of the fall are not known, but it's possible there was a prolonged drought or an epidemic. There could also have been a conflict with another group or an internal conflict—some of the buildings show evidence of destruction by fire. It appears this site was not just merely abandoned, like many of the Mayan archaeological sites .

The Aztecs considered Teotihuacan a sacred site even though it was abandoned long before their time. Teotihuacan is the name that was given to the site by the Aztecs, meaning "city of the gods" or "where men become gods."

More recently, in 2003, Sergio Gómez, an archaeologist with Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History, discovered a man-made tunnel after a heavy rainstorm left a sinkhole at the foot of a large pyramid known as the Temple of the Plumed Serpent. Upon further research with a high-resolution, ground-penetrating radar device, he found the tunnel ran from the Citadel (the center of the city) to the center of the Temple of the Plumed Serpent, making it some sort of underground road.

The ruined city features plazas, temples, a canalized river, and palaces that housed priests and nobles. Such structures—the Teotihuacanos were considered skilled urban planners—include the Citadel, the Pyramid of the Sun, the Pyramid of the Moon, and the Avenue of the Dead. While visiting the site, keep in mind that the actual city of Teotihuacan extended over 12 square miles (20 kilometers) and was intensely populated.

The Citadel: When the city was inhabited, the Citadel was the center of the city of Teotihuacan; but today, it is the southernmost point that's open to visitors. This fortress is marked by a large open space with surrounding temples that were most likely used for ceremonies.

Temple of Quetzalcoatl: If you walk across the square and climb the steps on the opposite side, you can view the Temple of Quetzalcoatl. (Quetzalcoatl was one of the most important gods in the Mesoamerican pantheon whose name means "feathered serpent.") The decoration on the facade of this building shows alternating heads of the serpent and another figure sometimes called Tlaloc (the Aztec rain god). The building is also decorated with snails and shells, both symbols of water.

Pyramid of the Sun: This huge pyramid is one of ancient Mexico's largest structures. It is nearly 200 feet high and 700 feet wide. Unlike the pyramids of Egypt, Mexican pyramids don't have a point on top, but instead are flat and most often used as bases for temples. The Pyramid of the Sun is built on top of a 100-yard-long cave that ends in the shape of a four-leaf clover (discovered in 1970). In ancient Mexico, caves like this represented passageways to the underworld—the womb of the earth.

If you're not afraid of a few stairs (around 250 of them), the views from the top of the pyramid are excellent. In fact, during the fall and spring equinox, Teotihuacan is packed with folks who dress in white and climb to the top. Once there, they stand with arms outstretched to receive the special energy of the site on that day.

Pyramid of the Moon: After taking in the scenery from the top of the Pyramid of the Sun (and if you’re still up for more climbing), make your way to the Pyramid of the Moon, the second-largest pyramid in modern-day Teotihuacan. This feature, which is located at the end of the Avenue of the Dead, was once used as a stage for performing the ritual sacrifices of both animals and humans. Upon this pyramid sits a platform meant for ceremonies honoring the Great Goddess of Teotihuacan, the goddess of water, fertility, the earth, and creation.

Avenue of the Dead: The Avenue of the Dead ( Calzada de los Muertos ) forms the main axis of the ancient city. It stretches to the north from the Citadel all the way to the Temple of the Moon. Rather than being directed exactly north-south, the Avenue of the Dead was aligned at 16º northwest to position it with the setting sun on a precise date. Lining the avenue are low buildings thought to be palace residences.

Visiting Teotihuacan

Location: Teotihuacan is located in the State of Mexico, approximately 25 miles (40 kilometers) northeast of Mexico City.

Hours: Teotihuacan archaeological zone is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm.

Admission: General admission is 70 pesos per person and it's free for children under 13. It's also free for Mexican citizens and residents on Sundays.

Tours: Many companies offer day trips to Teotihuacan from Mexico City. One option is the Turibus Teotihuacan , an all-day excursion that includes a visit to the Basilica of Guadalupe , as well as stops for lunch and shopping at an arts and crafts center. Private tours are great for those who want to spend more time exploring the ruins. And, an archeological tour is the best choice for history buffs and aspiring archeologists.

Travel Tips:

  • There are five entrances to the archaeological site. For a full tour, enter at the south end of the site (Entrance 1). Then, walk the length of the Avenue of the Dead (about 1.25 miles or 2 kilometers).
  • For a shortened tour, many groups begin at the Pyramid of the Sun (Entrance 2). This is a good option if your time is limited or you prefer not to walk.
  • Don't forget to take water, a hat, and sunscreen.

Getting There

If you would like to spend more time exploring the site, go it on your own. The most direct route from Mexico city is by car via Mexico 132D (it's about a 1.5-hour drive). You can also hire a taxi or a private guide to get you there, or you can easily use public transportation. To do so, take the metro to the Central del Norte station. From there, find a bus that goes directly to the ruins; the buses are marked " piramides ."

Valley of the Sun: A Self-Guided Road Trip Around Phoenix, Arizona

Expedia.com asked me to share part of my trip when Ryan and I traveled across the U.S. to climb several western state highpoints, including Humphreys Peak, Arizona’s highest mountain. During our amazing road trip, Phoenix, Arizona quickly became one of our favorite destinations! From SUVs to sedans, Expedia has several rental cars to choose from.

Heading to the Arizona desert in the middle of summer might sound crazy to some people, but that’s exactly what my daughter and I did on a recent trip out west.

Phoenix Lodging Options: Stay and play as long as you like in the Valley of the Sun! Expedia offers plenty of lodging options to meet every need.

If you fancy history, consider the Hotel San Carlos, an elegant downtown hotel that once hosted Marilyn Monroe and Humphry Bogart. For lovers of first-class accommodations, you might consider the Arizona Biltmore.

With so much to see and do in Phoenix, we were able to spend a few days relaxing and recharging while marveling in beautiful sunsets, hiking among giant cacti, and sipping on delicious craft beer.

There’s no shortage of mind-blowing vistas, so we discovered why hikers, bikers and visitors of all ages have come to the same conclusion as coyotes, roadrunners and jackrabbits: The Sonoran Desert is a great place to stay and play!

Find your own fun in the Valley of the Sun by following this self-guided driving loop tour and be amazed with Arizona’s capital city, just like my daughter and I were.

Self-Guided Driving Loop Tour Around Phoenix

Get off the boring freeway and experience the beauty found by driving a scenic, self-guided grand tour around the sprawling Phoenix metropolitan area. The total distance is about 60 miles with all driving done on surface roads so you will experience Phoenix just like a local!

Pro Tip: If you have a GPS, you could use the listed attractions as waypoints. Be sure to select the routing option that avoids major highways.

Start the loop tour from I-10 and take exit 155 to West Baseline Road, follow that west to Central Avenue, then head south to your first stop at Stone Mountain Park.

Stone Mountain Park

Valley of the Sun: A Self-Guided Road Trip Around Phoenix, Arizona Travels with Bibi

Encompassing over 16,000 acres, Stone Mountain Park is one of the largest urban parks anywhere in the world. Roads inside the park will take you to the summit of Dobbins Lookout, the highest peak at 2,330 feet where you can enjoy the panoramic view of the city below.

If you want to get out of the car and stretch your legs even more, Stone Mountain Park offers more than 51 miles of trails for hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking adventure.

Bonus destination: The nearby Mystery Castle is a man-made monument located in the foothills of Stone Mountain Park. Boasting 18 rooms and 13 fireplaces, the Mystery Castle is recognized by the likes of Life Magazine, McCall’s, and HGTV Extreme Homes.

Pro Tip: From the park exit, follow Central Avenue north through the heart of downtown Phoenix for 6 miles, then head west to the next stop on the tour, the Arizona State Capitol Museum.

Discover the rich, colorful history of times gone by at the Arizona State Capitol Museum. This small museum features four floors with more than 20 exhibition areas, and a sweet little gift shop showcasing some of Arizona’s finest products.

Children and adults alike enjoy seeing the Arizona state flag recreated from 113,998 Lego bricks, one brick for each mile in the state.

Hours: Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. & Saturday (Sept – May) 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Admission is free but donations are appreciated.

Pro Tip: Return to Central Avenue and head north to the Heard Museum.

Heard Museum

Take some time to explore one of the Phoenix area’s original cultural attractions. The Heard Museum is widely considered to house one of the finest collections of Native American art and artifacts anywhere in the world.

Visitors can enjoy 12 exhibition galleries, wander through several outdoor sculpture gardens, dine on authentic Southwest inspired fare, shop for one-of-a-kind handmade pieces from jewelry to rugs, pottery and katsina dolls. Save some time to discover cultural stories detailing American Indian life from a first-person perspective.

Hours: Monday through Saturday 9:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. & Sunday 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Admission is $18 for adults, $7.50 for children, under 6 are free.

Pro Tip: Follow Central Avenue north for another 5 miles to Glendale Avenue. Then turn right and head for Piestewa Peak Park.

Piestewa Peak Park

As you travel along a beautiful winding road through a natural desert that’s right in the middle of town, you’ll reach Piestewa Peak Park, the next fun destination on the self-guided loop tour.

If there are any hikers in your group, Piestewa Peak Park is where you’ll find the summit trail for the popular hike to the top of the 2,600-foot peak. Limited parking is available however, so you might have to wait for a spot to open up, or you could park further out and walk to the trailhead.

Always a top pick among locals, the 1.2-mile summit climb offers good views and a decent workout. If your group decides not to hike to the summit, no need to fret because the drive back to the main road offers extraordinary views across the city looking toward South Mountain.

Pro Tip: As you exit the park, turn left on Lincoln Drive and travel about 4 miles east, past the beautiful grounds of the Arizona Biltmore Hotel to Tatum Boulevard. Turn right if you want to end your day with a serious hike to Camelback Mountain.

Echo Canyon Recreation Area

Valley of the Sun: A Self-Guided Road Trip Around Phoenix, Arizona Travels with Bibi

After entering the Echo Canyon Recreation Area, head to the parking lot at the intersection just off Tatum and McDonald Drive. This is where you can pick up the trail that will take you to the summit of Camelback Mountain.

The hump-shaped mountain, aptly named Camelback Mountain, is one of Phoenix’s most prominent landmarks and a popular hiking destination.

Parking may be even more of a struggle here than it was at Piestewa Peak, so make sure you save some of your patience for this stretch of the tour.

This hike is a little over a mile in length and rated as strenuous so don’t underestimate the challenge of climbing to the summit.

Pro Tip: If Camelback Mountain is too much for your abilities, take 44th Street south to Papago Park instead.

Papago Park

Who doesn’t love the zoo and beautiful gardens? The 1,500-acre Papago Park is home to the Phoenix Zoo and Desert Botanical Gardens.

You’ll be able to explore the famous Hole in the Rock formation, an eroded chamber that passes all the way through a sandstone hill. It’s a short 5-minute hike so don’t pass up the great photo opportunities this destination provides!

The Desert Botanical Garden is a gorgeous living museum featuring more than 50,000 plants from around the world. If time allows, enjoy tours, seasonal exhibits, concerts, and special events. The second Tuesday of each month has free admission, otherwise tickets cost $22 for adults, $12 for students, $10 for children, and free for kids 3 and under.

For zoo lovers, the Phoenix Zoo has varying hours depending on the season, so make sure you call ahead.

Hours by season : November 1 – January 13: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (daily); January 14 – May 31: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (daily); June 1 – August 31 7:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. (daily); September 1 – October 31: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (daily).

Gate admission prices for the Phoenix Zoo: $24.95 for adults (ages 14 +); $16.95 for children (ages 3 – 13); Children ages 2 and under are free

Pro Tip: Take Galvin Parkway southwest to Van Buren. Travel approximately one mile west and one block south to Washington Street where you’ll find the Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeological Park.

Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeological Park

Valley of the Sun: A Self-Guided Road Trip Around Phoenix, Arizona Travels with Bibi

For a real treat, explore the heart of Phoenix at Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeological Park, an interesting ruin and display of artifacts that tells the story of Ancestral Sonoran Desert people who settled in the area over 1,500 years ago!

A fully accessible 2/3-mile trail takes you through a prehistoric Hohokam archaeological site. You will also find three galleries displaying artifacts and information on the Hohokam and village site.

Hours: Open Monday to Saturday 9:00 a.m. – 4:45 p.m. Sunday 1:00 – 4:45 p.m. Trail closes at 4:30 p.m.

Admission is $6.00 for adults, $3.00 for children, and free for kids under 6.

This is the final stop on the self-guided loop tour around Phoenix.

Despite awkward moments, Madonna's Celebration Tour stop at Acrisure Arena stuns visually

tour of the sun

The last time Madonna performed in the desert was at the 2006 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. However, she was 20 minutes late and only performed six songs.

At Acrisure Arena on Wednesday, the Material Girl made a stunning return to the Coachella Valley after almost two decades as part of her Celebration Tour. A DJ warmed up the crowd for an hour before Madonna appeared shortly before 10 p.m. and performed a spectacular and visually stunning retrospective of her 40-plus year career.

Madonna was originally scheduled to perform at the arena in January, but the tour was postponed due to a severe bacterial infection that landed her in the ICU last summer .

'She's our girl'

Even though most fans were dressed to impress Wednesday, only some went as a particular version of Madonna from various periods.

Gina Ayala and Debi Clouter of Desert Hot Springs were dressed in the 1983 "Borderline" era. Clouter saw Madonna perform in on the 1985 "Virgin Tour" and Ayala caught the singer's epic 1990-1991 tour in Detroit.

"She's our girl. I've been a fan since I was 15, and it all started with 'Material Girl," Couter said.

"We're so happy, and we're really here," Ayala said. "I'm going to cry right now."

Brother and sister Robert Pimentel of Palm Springs and Fina Meraz of Bermuda Dunes, the latter of whom was in a white wedding dress similar to the one Madonna wore at the 1984 MTV Video Music Awards, were taking pictures with other fans in the hallway before the concert. The siblings have both seen Madonna on a handful of occasions, including once together in Las Vegas. Meraz saw Madonna at Coachella in 2006.

Meraz said she's been a fan since seeing the singer interviewed by Don Cornelius and told him "I want to rule the world."

"I was like, 'That's my girl and I want to rule the world along with her!'" said Meraz.

Since opening last year, Acrisure Arena has hosted high-profile concert tours by The Eagles, KISS , Olivia Rodrigo , Shania Twain, Peso Pluma and more. Madonna's concert speaks to the venue becoming a noteworthy stop for leading entertainers — most of whom have never included Palm Desert on their tour itineraries previously.

"We immediately purchased tickets because she's bringing a lot of flavor to the desert, has a huge following and a lot of die-hard fans. It's exciting to have her here," Meraz said.

A joyous beginning and beautiful tribute

The concert started with Madonna performing the 1998 song "Nothing Really Matters" before diving into her early 1980s hits "Everybody," "Into The Groove," "Burning Up," "Open Up Your Heart" and "Holiday," which began with an onstage sketch of Madonna trying to get past a security guard at a club who allowed all her backup dancers inside except for her.

When she finally got inside and performed the song in a celebratory tone, suddenly the dancers disappeared and the one grooving with Madonna fell to the floor before the arena went dark. A photo mosaic and montage appeared in the backdrop paying tribute to those who died after being infected by HIV, (a disease that has killed an estimated 40 million people worldwide, according to the  World Health Organization ), including her friend and artist Keith Haring and Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.

An image of the Grammy-winning R&B and soul singer  Luther Vandross was removed after a February concert in Sacramento after the late singer's estate objected to his photo being included . Vandross passed away in 2005 due to complications from a stroke suffered two years earlier.

Acknowledging the 'daddy' presence

Most of the crowd was Generation X and the tail end of the baby boomer generation. Before Madonna took the stage, RuPaul's Drag Race season 8 winner Bob the Drag Queen walked through the audience and acknowledged the "daddies" in attendance for those with "daddy issues."

"Listen, I know y'all were there when the songs came out, so I don't want to hear no bullsh-t tonight," Bob the Drag Queen told the crowd.

Madonna also acknowledged the older men in the audience.

"I don't know what Bob was talking but, because I have daddy issues and I don't think I'm going to find a daddy here. But it's OK, because I came for the shmoney."

'Don't do that to me'

As Madonna looked around the crowd at one point, she was happy to see an older man she referred to as "Grandpa" up front who was "up and going." But there was also an awkward moment when she asked someone in the crowd "Don't do that to me, that's a weird salute. Just wave (instead)." Moments later, she returned back to the man and said "You did a weird Heil Hitler moment, but I know you didn't do it on purpose though."

"It's OK, we all make mistakes. I do occasionally myself," Madonna said.

Like other recent performances, her concert on Wednesday had some minor performance flaws and other cringeworthy exchanges with the crowd.

"Why is it called Palm Springs? That's a rhetorical question," Madonna asked before labeling the local area as a "sleepy little town" like "Little Rock, Arkansas" (despite Little Rock having over 150,000 more residents than Palm Springs).

Still provocative and naughty

Madonna is 65, but she's still the "Bad Girl" who shocked the world when she released the 1992 coffee table book "Sex" featuring risque and erotic imagery, challenged the norms on gender and sexuality, was an LGBTQ ally when it was unpopular and was scorned by religious leaders for her controversial music and videos.

One section of the show certainly reminded us of that era.

Before "Like A Prayer" during Act II of the concert, Madonna was approached by what appeared to be three druid figures who covered her in a priestess-like robe as shirtless dancers wearing bondage hoods appeared in a spinning merry-go-round structure that arose from the stage with illuminated crosses in the center.

"Erotica" and "Justify My Love" in Act III also incorporated sexually suggestive themes with several of the dancers, and Madonna simulated masturbation on a red velvet bed with a “Vogue”-era doppelganger. "Hung Up" also featured the singer in a red-and-black negligee and knee-high black boots and topless female dancers, one of whom she shared a kiss with.

Madonna still delivers

Madonna’s Celebration Tour highlights the singer’s triumphant achievements and notorious moments over the past four decades. But it’s not just the nostalgia, it’s a reminder of her influence and the creative mark she’s left on pop music, fashion, society and international politics. She wears a crown not as a diva, but as an icon.

Even though many stops on the tour have featured unflattering moments like taking a fall on stage after a dancer dropped her, asking a man in a wheelchair why he was sitting down during the concert and some minor performance flaws, Madonna still delivers a first-class production worthy of her being one of the hottest concert tickets around the globe.

VCT Masters Madrid 2024 venue

VCT Masters Madrid 2024 is an in-person event with a live audience, and all matches will take place at the 12,000-seat Madrid Arena .

VCT Masters Madrid 2024 format

The tournament will be held in two phases. The first one, called the Swiss Stage , will feature a Swiss-system tournament.

Every team will play a set of matches, and the top four teams will progress to the next phase.

In the Swiss format, each team’s next opponent is determined by the result of the previous matches.

This is unlike round-robin tournaments, where each team plays against every other team, and group formats where the fixtures are predetermined.

The top four teams will then go through a direct elimination Playoffs Stage , which will conclude in the Grand Final on March 24, 2024.

VCT Masters Madrid 2024 schedule

The schedule and match-ups for Round 1 of the Swiss Stage have been announced, and they are as follows:

Day 1 - March 14, 2024

  • Karmine Corp vs FunPlus Phoenix - 2pm UK Time / 7am PT
  • Gen.G Esports vs LOUD - 5pm UK Time / 10am PT

Day 2 - March 15, 2024

  • EDward Gaming vs Paper Rex -  2pm UK Time / 7am PT
  • Sentinels vs Team Heretics - 5pm UK Time / 10am PT

Round 2 will take place on March 16-17, 2024, and the final Round 3 of the Swiss Stage will be on March 18, 2024.

Just like during the first two days, all matches start either at 2pm UK Time / 7am PT or 5pm UK Time / 10am PT .

The Playoffs will take place from March 21 to March 24, 2024.

Where to watch VCT Masters Madrid 2024

The VCT Masters Madrid 2024 will be broadcast live, so Valorant fans around the world will be able to watch all the matches as they happen.

Fans can watch the tournament via the official Valorant Twitch channel and the Valorant Champions Tour YouTube channel .

Of course, some of the most popular Valorant streamers, such as Tarik and Kyedae, will host watch streams during the tournament on their channels.
