Luke Littler

Darts results: Luke Littler hits nine-darter and wins title on his PDC Pro Tour debut in Wigan

Luke Littler made an explosive start to his life on the PDC Pro Tour by firing a nine-dart finish en route to the Players Championship 1 title.

Littler averaged 109.64 to win a pulsating final, beating Ryan Searle 8-7 with the latter managing a staggering 111.71 only to be outdone by the sport's new golden boy.

“I know my game is there, I know I can beat anyone, and I’m really happy to have won,” reflected Littler, who already has his sights set on World Matchplay qualification.

“Me and my manager know what I have to do to qualify for the World Matchplay and the World Grand Prix.

“I’ve got about 13 or 14 ProTours before the World Matchplay, but it’s always good to get off to a good start.

“I want to try and qualify for everything, and I’ve just got to play my game. I’m taking it in my stride.

“It takes huge pressure off me, and now hopefully I can settle and enjoy it.”

LUKE LITTLER WINS AT PC1! 🏆☢️ On his Players Championship debut, 17-year-old sensation Luke Littler, has WON THE TITLE! 🤯 With a 110 average and hitting seven 180s, he comes through a thriller of a final to defeat Ryan Searle in a deciding leg! Generational talent 🌟 pic.twitter.com/Ehd6rfbtST — PDC Darts (@OfficialPDC) February 12, 2024

The 17-year-old's exploits at the World Championship shot him to sporting stardom and he's shown no sign of slowing down since having hit the headlines with a televised perfect leg in Bahrain on his winning World Series debut back in January and also producing further fireworks in the opening two weeks of the Premier League season.

Littler's first appearance in a ranking tournament as a PDC professional was equally sensational as he averaged over 100 on four occasions, managing 108.99 against Cameron Menzies in the last 16 before going better still in the final, while his moment of perfection came in the previous round against Michele Turetta, who he thrashed 6-1.

That saw him become the youngest ever player to achieve a nine-darter on the PDC Pro Tour at the age of 17 - breaking the record set by 18-year-old Leighton Bennett just an hour earlier.

To highlight that not only teenagers can manage the feat, 50-year-old Mickey Mansell also got in on the act six minutes after Bennett!

The Nuke also missed double 12 in his 6-3 triumph over Menzies for what would have been a second nine-darter of the day.

Littler, who started the day with a 6-1 thrashing of Jim Williams with an average of 105.48 before seeing off Luke Woodhouse 97.78 in round two, also defeated James Hurrell 6-3 in the quarter-finals with his third 100+ average of the day (100.65) but avoided a huge scare against Alan Soutar in the last four.

The Scotsman spurned two darts for a 6-4 lead in the race to seven as Littler punished him before taking out a massive 150 checkout to edge 6-5 ahead.

Soutar hit back to force a decider only for Littler to scrape through with an average of 89.70 which at least made him look slightly human.

World Darts Championship 2023/24 full tournament results, draw, schedule as Humphries beats Littler in final

A lexandra Palace has played host to another memorable PDC World Darts Championship that will conclude with a historic final on January 3.

Top seed Michael Smith lost in the round of 16 in his defence of the Sid Waddell trophy he won in 2022 in front of up to 3,200 fans in London. Smith beat Michael van Gerwen 7–4 in the final last year, hitting the only nine-dart finish of the tournament along the way.

Van Gerwen himself bowed out in the quarterfinals but the tournament has been all about 16-year-old sensation Luke Littler, who has knocked out former winners Raymond van Barneveld and Rob Cross, averaging over 100 in four of his matches.

Littler lost the final to Luke Humphries, who demolished Van Gerwen's conqueror Scott Williams 6-0 in the semis and will ascend to world number one when the new rankings are released.

Humphries won a jackpot of £500,000, with Littler receiving £200,000 as part of a total prize find of £2.5 million.

Here, The Sporting News provides the dates for the 2023/24 tournament, how each day looked in terms of schedule, as well as the format and results.

PDC World Darts Championship 2023/24: Seeded players

Here's how the seeds stand, following the PDC Order of Merit.

PDC World Darts Championship 2023/24: What is the format?

Of the 96 players in the championship, 32 qualify by virtue of being the highest-ranked on organisers the Professional Darts Corporation's (PDC) Order of Merit, and are seeded to the second round.

The next 32 participants consist of the highest-ranked players from the 2023 PDC Pro Tour Order of Merit, with the final 32 qualifying through various international routes.

After first and second-round matches that are best-of-five sets, the third and fourth rounds are best-of-seven.

The quarterfinals are best-of-nine sets, the semifinals best-of-11 sets and the final is best-of-13 sets. Players take it in turns to throw at the start of each set, which are won by the first player to take three legs.

First-round matches will not have a tie-break; if the fifth set reaches two-all in legs, the fifth leg will be sudden-death.

From the Second round onwards, a tie-break will be employed in all matches in which a deciding set must be won by two clear legs.

If the score in the final set reaches 5-5, a sudden-death leg will be played. There will be no throw for the bull in any sudden-death legs.

Williams wins first ProTour title at Players Championship 6

Jim Williams

Jim Williams beat Ricky Evans 8-6 to win Players Championship 6 and secure his first ever ProTour title at the Barnsley Metrodome on Sunday. A nervy final between two players both hunting a maiden ProTour title saw Evans break throw with a stunning 128 finish to level at 6-6, only for Williams to reply with a 12-dart leg to move to within one of victory.  Nerves seemed to be getting the better of both in the decisive leg, with Williams eventually pinning double one with his eighth match dart. The victory for sees Williams collect his first ProTour title in just six events as a PDC Tour Card holder, having joined the professional circuit earlier this year.  "I didn't feel any nerves all day until the last match darts," said the Welshman.  "It wasn't a great way to win it but it is a good feeling. It's a very long day and I haven't played that much in the last three years really so I had to battle through." "To win it is great and hopefully now I feel like I belong and can kick on from here." Williams started his run to the title with a 6-0 whitewash of Peter Hudson before seeing off Kevin Burness and Andrew Gilding.  He then beat Scott Williams, Premier League star Michael Smith and came through an intense affair against Martin Schindler, winning 7-5 to reach his first PDC final.  Evans, playing in his fifth PDC final, battled past Chris Dobey, John O'Shea, Jason Lowe and Mensur Suljovic to reach the last 16.  He then saw off Germany's Gabriel Clemens before defying a nine-darter from Danny Noppert in the semi-finals to set up the showdown with Williams for the title.  UK Open Champion Noppert's nine-darter was the third of the weekend, with Josh Rock and Joe Cullen hitting perfection in Players Championship 5.  The Players Championship action continues next weekend (March 26-27), with two events in Niedernhausen, Germany.

The Pro Tour

The PDC Pro Tour is the bread and butter of any player in the PDC. Floor tournaments played behind closed doors that the ranking are build from.

The PDC Pro Tour is a series of darts tournaments organised annually by the PDC. The Pro Tour events are unique in that they are non-televised events and they comprise Professional Dart Players Association (PDPA) Players Championships, UK Open qualifiers and European Tour events.

The PDC began operating a Tour Card system in 2011, with there being a total of 128 players awarded Tour Cards every year. These allow players to participate in all Players Championship and UK Open qualifiers. There has been a particular increase of Players Championship events over recent years, all of which see players aim to qualify for the Players Championship Finals. These events are known within the sport as floor tournaments, with multiple boards featuring games taking place at one time.

The PDC Pro Tour

As of today, the PDC awards players Tour Cards through the following requirements:

  • Top 64 players from the PDC Order of Merit after the World Championship (having competed in at least ten events)
  • Tour Card holders from previous year’s Qualifying School
  • Four tour card holders from previous year’s invitations (PDC Challenge Tour & PDC Development Tour)
  • Two highest qualifiers from the PDC Challenge Tour, a series of tournaments for non-Tour Card holders
  • Two highest qualifiers from the PDC Development Tour, a series of tournaments for youth players
  • At least 16 qualifiers from a four-day Qualifying School (more places will be awarded via this method if not all the above spaces are filled)

PDPA (Professional Dart Players Association) players can only enter Pro Tour tournaments through the PDC’s online entry system. Those who are not a PDPA player must submit their entries through the local event organiser.

UK Players Championship events feature a 128-player draw, but those events which feature fewer than 128 entries will see byes awarded to players via their seeding. Seedings for these events are decided by the one-year rolling Players Championship Order of Merit, which is determined by the prize money won in Players Championships events over the 12 months before that event. Tour Card holders must pay a £100 entry fee to all Players Championship events.

Prize money won by players in the Pro Tour also contributes directly to their overall ranking in the PDC Order of Merit, which decides seedings in a number of PDC ranking tournaments . Players can also earn automatic qualifying places in major tournaments such as the World Championship, World Matchplay and World Grand Prix through their prize money earned. As such, players performances in events on the Pro Tour can have a direct correlation on their success in the televised ranking events.

Players win the following amount of prize money for their success in Pro Tour events:

  • Winner – £10,000
  • Runner-Up – £6,000
  • Semi-Finals – £3,000
  • Quarter-Finals – £2,250
  • Last 16 – £1,500
  • Last 32 – £1,000
  • Last 64 – £500

In the history of PDC Pro Tour events, no player has won more titles than Michael van Gerwen, who has 75 to his name. He sits just above Phil Taylor in the list of Pro Tour victories, who won 70 Pro Tour tournaments during his esteemed career, while Gary Anderson sits in third place with 30 victories.

The 22-member class includes two 2023 European Ryder Cuppers (Ludvig Åberg and Nicolai Højgaard), four players who have already won on TOUR this season (Matthieu Pavon, Jake Knapp, Austin Eckroat and Nick Dunlap), and even 42-year-old David Skinns, who has yet to make a start in THE PLAYERS or a major.

There’s Akshay Bhatia, 22, a TOUR winner and YouTube content creator whose PLAYERS prep included reviewing YouTube highlights of Rickie Fowler’s 2015 PLAYERS win – and there’s Chan Kim, 33, an eight-time Japan Golf Tour winner.

Kim, a 14-year pro, crystallized the morning’s ethos at Wednesday’s traditional First Timers Press Conference on TPC Sawgrass’ back lawn, right outside the clubhouse: Golf’s next wave of young stars might just be beginning to crest.

“They’re basically creating super-athletes straight out of college,” Kim said. “When they step out here, they’re not scared of anything; they’re ready to go. It’s pretty special to see, and hopefully, I just keep up with them, to be honest.”

Ten years ago, Jordan Spieth wowed the Northeast Florida fans as a PLAYERS first-timer, sharing the 54-hole lead before finishing T4. That sparked him to a banner year, in 2015, where he won two majors and the FedExCup.

Which PLAYERS first-timer could follow this arc? There’s an ample selection from which to choose.

“It’s fun to see what might be the next generation of golf,” Eckroat said, “getting their foot in the ground, in the door and winning.”

Here's a closer look at five PLAYERS first-timers who could factor this week at TPC Sawgrass’ PLAYERS Stadium Course.

1. Ludvig Åberg

To some extent, Åberg arrived here in reverse.

The long-hitting Swede has ascended to No. 10 in the world, less than a year after completing his college golf career at Texas Tech and earning his TOUR card as the top-ranked player on PGA TOUR University. He has already played on a winning European Ryder Cup team and earned his first TOUR title at The RSM Classic last fall.

Ludvig Åberg wins The RSM Classic

Åberg has earned bountiful accolades to this point, and his PLAYERS debut is a continuation of his fast track. It could seem counterintuitive, but he has yet to play in a major championship. This week’s test serves as a natural conveyor to the 2024 major championship season, at the TOUR’s premier event.

“I'm still doing a lot of these things for the first time,” Åberg said Wednesday. “And even though I'm at a different stage now than I was a couple of months ago, I still experience a lot of things for the first time. And I think being okay with all those things coming at you at the same time is what I'm trying to do.”

He has done that pretty well so far.

2. Akshay Bhatia

Six years ago, Bhatia lost in a playoff at the Junior PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass. He remembers being bogey-free through 17 holes of the opening round, then hitting his tee shot at the water-logged par-4 18th into the water and making double bogey. Despite that scar, the week resonated with him – players were treated like pros, TOUR equipment vans and all, and he resolved to make it back as a pro.

After winning last summer’s Barracuda Championship as a Special Temporary Member, Bhatia earned full TOUR status through 2025, including a spot in his first PLAYERS this week.

Left-hand/Right-hand challenge: Akshay Bhatia and Nicolai Højgaard

“Just going through the clubhouse, taking a peek in the winner’s locker room and everything about it, it’s just really cool,” Bhatia said Wednesday. “The golf course has so much history, and being the 50th (PLAYERS) is obviously really special for us.

“I watched (Fowler’s 2015) highlights a couple weeks ago on YouTube, and just everything he did, everything that came to him at the right time, was pretty surreal. It doesn’t seem that long ago, but it was … He’s super chill, and it’s just cool watching him that long ago and now we’re putting around or hitting balls next to each other.”

Bhatia has earned that right.

3. Austin Eckroat

Nothing seems to faze Eckroat, 25, who earned his first TOUR title in convincing fashion at the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches earlier this month, striping shot after shot through PGA National’s famed Bear Trap for a three-stroke win.

Now the Oklahoma State alum readies for his first PLAYERS at TPC Sawgrass, where he previously competed at the 2015 Junior PLAYERS. Eckroat’s progression has been constant; he began going to the range with his father Steve at age 2, he won two individual Oklahoma high school state championships and he earned his first TOUR card through the 2022 Korn Ferry Tour Finals in his second year as a pro.

Austin Eckroat wins the Cognizant Classic

Eckroat, who finished T10 at last year’s U.S. Open, relishes this stage. This marks his first trip back to TPC Sawgrass since 2015, and he had yet to play the back nine upon meeting the media Wednesday morning, but he noted the par-5 16th (along with the par-5 second) as a hole that requires a draw shot-shape.

“You have to drive the golf ball great,” Eckroat said of TPC Sawgrass. “The rough is long and the greens are pure … it’s all going to come down to how many fairways you’re hitting.

“It’s awesome (to be here). It has a major-championship feel to it … This feels like a big, big event.”

Just the way he likes it.

4. Jake Knapp

After eight years as a pro, including five PGA TOUR Canada seasons and three years on the Korn Ferry Tour, Knapp didn’t waste time in making an impact as a TOUR rookie. He has notched three top-five finishes this season, including a win at the Mexico Open at Vidanta, to earn a spot in his first PLAYERS.

During the fall of 2021 and the spring of 2022, Knapp spent nine months as a bouncer to support his golf career. En route to his maiden TOUR title in Mexico, a side-profile photo of Knapp working security at The Country Club in Costa Mesa, California, made the rounds on social media.

Jake Knapp wins the 2024 Mexico Open at Vidanta

“I definitely didn’t expect (the photo) to be run with that much,” Knapp laughed Wednesday at TPC Sawgrass. “That’s the one thing I wanted to make clear to everybody, the only statement I wanted to make, is that I’m not a bouncer that decided to play golf; I’ve been playing since I was 3 years old, I competed at UCLA for national championships; professionally, I haven’t had a lot of success – I had some wins in Canada and I’ve been alright, just haven’t been able to figure it out quite yet, and just kind of matured and got better.

“I feel like I’m right where I need to be.”

This week, he’s at THE PLAYERS, ranked No. 8 in the FedExCup and rapidly ascending on the Official World Golf Ranking (world No. 45, his career high). That’s a good spot to be.

5. Nick Dunlap

Justin Thomas earned a PGA TOUR card within two years of turning pro after his sophomore season at the University of Alabama.

Nick Dunlap accelerated that path, so much so that Thomas can’t fully comprehend the logistical challenges required – a mindset shift from homework and studying to game-planning for TOUR courses and week-to-week travel.

“It’s a very tough, quick adjustment for anybody,” Thomas said. “He can ask me for all the advice that he wants, but in terms of what he actually went through, I can’t relate.”

Behind the scenes with amateur Nick Dunlap after his first TOUR win

Dunlap’s former Alabama teammates were on-hand Tuesday, a day after completing the Hayt Invitational at Sawgrass Country Club (across the street from TPC Sawgrass), lending support to the 20-year-old phenom who won The American Express in January, becoming the first amateur to win a TOUR event since 1991.

Dunlap turned pro less than a week later, earning full TOUR status through 2026 – including a tee time at THE PLAYERS this week. It’s another new experience in a spring full of them.

“He’s probably the best player that I’ve ever seen,” said Jonathan Griz, his former teammate and still-roommate in Tuscaloosa. “Just to see his dreams come true, it’s fun for me, because I love him to death and I want him to play well every week. I’ve watched more golf than I ever have before, because I’m already refreshing the leaderboard, just because I care about him.”

He's not alone among the Crimson Tide faithful who will have a close eye on Dunlap’s progression at THE PLAYERS.
