Description

Valley Isle Excursions is one of the few permitted tour operators to take guests to the summit of Haleakal to watch the sunrise from the top of Maui's 10,000 foot volcano! A Haleakala Sunrise is Maui's most difficult ticket to obtain. Haleakala National Park required all visitors to have a permit to watch the sunrise, and those permits are very limited and very difficult to get. There are just a few tour operators that have the permit required to take guests on this excursion, and Valley Isle Excurions is thrilled to be one of them.

Your adventure begins with EARLY morning pickup at your resort. Valley Isle's strategy is to get you to summit as early as possible for two reasons. First, it allows you to see the night sky from what feels like the top of the world while the sky is still completely dark and just FULL of stars. Secondly, it allows thei guests to score the best viewing spots along the crater rim as you await the anticipated climax of the event as the sun appears on the horizon directly over the crater. Your tour guide will offer insider knowledge and incorporate Hawaiian legends, culture, and history into the narration.

After the sunrise and tour of the park you descend from the summit area, passing through changes in topography, climate, and scenery as you come down the mountain. This experience is elevated by the luxurious Comfort Cruiser tour vehicles that feature huge windows for best views of the island while you are on your return down the mountain. When you reach the bottom you'll enjoy a nice hot breakfast at the Maui Tropical Planation before final return to your resort.

Valley Isle Haleakala Sunrise Tour Rate (VIE3)

$249.99 per Adult, $229.99 per Child (12 and under), $239.99 per Seniors (over 60)   (plus 4.712% Hawaii sales tax)

If your dates are already sold out with Valley Isle Excurions we have two suggestions for you. First, check availability with the other two tour operators who also do Haleakala Sunrise Tours. See Polynesian Adventures and Skyline Hawaii . Second, if all tour operators are sold out on the Sunrise Tour consider the Haleakala Sunset Tour instead. Sunsets are just as pretty, and the park is a lot less crowded in the evening!

Schedule: Currently operating Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday

Pick Up: Around 2:00am to 2:30am depending on the location of your accommodations and time of the year.

Duration: 8-10 hours depending on your pickup location.

Tour Includes: Round trip transportation, park admission, guide, breakfast.

Restrictions: Because of the high elevation, this tour is not recommended for anyone with breathing or heart problems or pregnant women.

What to Wear: Dress in layers. Bring a warm jacket or sweater along and wear long pants. Closed toed shoes with socks will keep you warm.

Reservations: Advanced reservations required. This event is "RESERVE NOW PAY LATER"; we need a credit card on file to finalize your reservation but we do not charge you for this reservation until a few days before the beginning of your vacation!

Minimum Notice for Cancellations / Changes: At least 48 hours before the start of the event. All tours go out rain or shine.

Kevin at Falls

Starting in February of 2017, Haleakala National Park implemented a reservation system for sunrise viewing from the summit of the crater. Without advanced reservations, visitors are not permitted to drive rental cars into the National Park from 3am to 7am. If you want to see a sunrise from the top of Haleakala and you didn't secure a permit weeks before your Maui arrival, one of these tours is your only way to get inside the park in the pre-dawn hours.

Sunrise on Haleakala has gotten SO popular that it is hard to find space on any of these tours if you aren't planning ahead. There isn't a tremendous difference between the three tour operators who have permits to run Haleakala Sunrise tours. Your decision on which company to go with may come down to taking whichever company still has space available for your date. Of the tree companies, Valley Isle Excursions will likely get you to the summit the earliest which is good if you want to do some stargazing while the sky is really dark.

The road to the summit of Haleakala is not as narrow as the road to Hana, but there are hairpin turns … LOTS of them. And driving it in the middle of the night in the dark can be a challenge. Actually, if you aren't properly rested, driving can be dangerous. Consider one of these tours … you can rest your eyes on the way up instead of having to prop them open with toothpicks and getting white knuckles from holding the steering wheel too tightly.

Haleakala is famous for its spectacular sunrises and it has a well-deserved reputation. We wish every morning at the summit could be equally beautiful, but obviously this just isn't possible. There is no way to predict which mornings are going to be pretty based upon weather forecasts. Occasionally there are days when cancellation is necessary due to a serious storm, but ordinary summit weather is notoriously unpredictable and changes quickly. The tour operators provide the same level of service every day, and incur the same expenses in operating the tour regardless of the quality of the sunrise view on any given day. All they can do is take people on their tours every day and watch what happens as the sun rises.

Haleakala Sunrise Tour Review

Haleakala Sunrise Tour with Valley Isle Excursions

A featured part of every must-do list of activities on Maui, watching a stunning sunrise from atop Haleakala Volcano – the world’s largest dormant volcano, and the focal point of Maui – has earned its spot on every Hawaii travel list for a reason.

While we have certainly made the (extremely) early morning drive up through the winding hills of Upcountry to reach the 10,023 foot Haleakala summit ourselves, we will say this – it is tedious, dark, and almost always longer than you think it will be, and in consideration of the new reservation requirements visitors now need to even access the summit – it is a grand idea to make a whole morning of it and book a spot on the Haleakala Sunrise Tour with one of the most respected tour companies on the island, Valley Isle Excursions.

Haleakala Crater

Not only are their tour guides full of fascinating local knowledge, but their shuttles are comfortable, compact, and uncrowded, maxing out at 12 guests per guide to ensure ultimate comfort and service.

Morning Pick-(Me)-Up

If you’ve ever set your alarm clock for 2 am, you’re aware of just how real the struggle can be to drag yourself out of bed and prepare for the day. The positive? You’re not preparing for a long flight, a full day of manual labor, or even a bleary-eyed drive up a volcano. You’re preparing to sit in a plush leather seat and ‘rest your eyes’ while a much more prepared individual does all the talking, driving, and generally, work.

haleakala crater clouds

We were picked up directly from our accommodation in North Kihei and, after a couple more stops to pick up the remaining members of our tour group, were transported to our first stop of the day, a cozy restaurant in central Maui to enjoy a quick and delicious light breakfast, including fresh fruit, coffee, and warm pastries.

Journey to the Summit

After climbing back into Valley Isle’s custom-built shuttle, which includes oversized viewing windows, USB seat ports, and elevated high back seats, we set off for the 30-mile journey through Upcountry into the grounds of Haleakala National Park.

sunrise tours of haleakala volcano

Home to more endangered species than any other National Park, we were encouraged to keep an eye out for Hawaii’s state bird – the nene goose – as well as the endangered Hawaiian silversword, a unique endemic plant found only in the Hawaiian Islands. Our guide kept us entertained with plenty of local trivia, from flora and fauna to cultural and historical information.

Haleakala Sunrise

We arrived at the Summit Visitor Center in perfect time to walk around, find our perfect sunrise-viewing spot and prepare with a warm cup of cocoa, and were treated to an absolutely breathtaking sunrise above the clouds. Swoon.

valley isle excursions haleakala sunrise tour review

Attracting more than a million visitors per year, Haleakala is undoubtedly at its busiest at the sunrise hour, but not to worry – there’s still plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the view for yourself. We even got the chance to participate in a traditional Hawaiian chant, which was an especially memorable moment with the added perk of the location.

Two quick tips: be sure to bring your camera (or phone, which you can charge in the USB ports in the van on the drive up), and wear plenty of layers, as it gets very chilly once you near the summit. We even had a recent snowfall at the summit in February 2018, so don’t underestimate the weather just because it’s Hawaii.

Post-Sunrise Breakfast

After snapping more photos than anyone rightfully should, we made our way down the rugged volcanic slopes for our final stop, an island-style breakfast buffet. With choices like scrambled eggs, french toast, Portuguese sausage, oatmeal, yogurt, hash browns, and more, it was the ultimate way to warm up and take in yet another magical view of The Valley Isle after an event-filled morning.

We were dropped back off our hotel around 10:45 am and were thrilled to still have a full day left to explore. And nap. Most likely nap. Overall we loved the experience and were thrilled at the convenience of not having to drive ourselves or worry about breakfast before or after the tour. We highly recommend this for your next Maui trip, whether traveling solo or with family and friends.

Haleakala Sunrise: The Ultimate 2024 Guide (What to Expect, Reservation Info, Tours!)

For many first-time travelers to Maui, a visit to the island is not complete without experiencing a Haleakala sunrise.

It’s one of those magical Maui bucket list experiences that you’ll remember long after your trip, especially if you are lucky and have great weather and visibility for your Haleakala sunrise.

Despite the need to wake up at an ungodly hour on vacation and the chance that the summit could be socked in, more than two million visitors to the Valley Isle make the journey to the top of the crater each year.

Sunrise at Haleakala summit in Maui, Hawaii

So high is this experience on travelers’ wish-lists for things to do in Maui that Haleakala National Park, within which the summit of Haleakala is located, has introduced a parking reservation system to manage visitation for sunrise.

We’ve visited Haleakala for sunrise twice so far, once with perfect conditions: colorful skies and a spectacular sunrise, and a second time with a great sunrise and perfect visibility but without the blaze of colors that makes a sunrise (or sunset) epic for us.

In this article, we tell you everything you need to know to plan a trip to the summit of Haleakala for sunrise, including what to expect, where to go, how to make parking reservations, tour information if you don’t want to drive, and more.

Excited? Let’s get started discovering how to visit Haleakala at sunrise!

Sunrise at Haleakala: What to Expect

Sunrise at Haleakala is magical.

When the weather gods smile on you, the experience is without a doubt one of the best things to do in Haleakala National Park .

The summit of Haleakala, Maui’s dormant volcano, tops out at 10,023 feet, way above the clouds. Haleakala means “the house of the sun,” and the association between this Maui crater and the sun is in fact the subject of a famous Hawaiian legend.

But legends aside, a Haleakala sunrise is an almost religious experience.

Especially if you are lucky and have those colorful skies at dawn.

As you drive up in the dark, you will be treated to a night sky with millions of stars. Walk to the lookout, where you’ll be awed by the beauty of the still dawn as the sky gradually lightens and gets dressed in shades of pink and orange.

Then the sun emerges in all its brilliant glory, bathing the crater and its cinder cones in warm gold.

Colorful skies at Haleakala just before sunrise

You may hear collective “oohs” and “aahs”, or a smattering of applause, as the waiting crowd takes in the mesmerizing sight.

And if you are very lucky, a ranger may perform the sunrise chant — E Ala Ē — to awaken the sun and imbue everyone present with energy for the new day.

It moved me almost to tears when we heard it, in conjunction with a great sunrise, our second time at Haleakala for sunrise.

Slots are released at 7 a.m. Hawaii Standard Time 60 days in advance, with a second batch being released 48 hours in advance of any given date, also at 7 a.m. HST.

There is a reservation fee of $1.00 per ticket and you only need one ticket per vehicle. The ticket is only valid for the day reserved, and you can only buy one sunrise reservation in any 3-day period.

Refunds or exchanges are not issued due to weather or for any other reason.

Once you’ve made your reservation, download the confirmation email or print it. You will need to show it, along with photo ID that matches the reservation, and a park entry pass, to be able to enter the park.

Note that tickets for sunrise viewing are not available at the park and you cannot obtain one in person. The reservation HAS to be made online in advance!

Sunrise at Haleakala is a very popular Maui activity and slots do sell out, especially in high season. To ensure your spot, make your Haleakala sunrise reservation as soon as your date becomes available.

If you wait for the 48-hour slots to verify weather conditions, make your reservation as soon as slots go available. These tickets tend to get snapped up very quickly.

As I write this, there are no tickets available for the near term dates, but there are tickets available for the further out dates.

Getting to Haleakala for Sunrise

Sunrise time at Haleakala varies by time of year: it can be as early at 5.35 a.m. or so in the summer and as late as 7.00 a.m. in the depths of winter. If you visit Maui in winter , you can wake up a little later and still make it in time!

You can look up exact sunrise and sunset times for the date of your visit here .

You should plan to be at the summit at least 60 minutes before sunrise, so you can settle down at a good spot to watch the whole show, from dark sky to gold.

The colors in the sky, the pinks and oranges, appear before the sunrise, and they are an integral part of the show, making for the best photos.

Plus, the earlier you arrive, the higher the chance that you get your top choice of viewing spot at the summit (see more below about the various viewing areas at the Haleakala summit).

And there may be a line of cars at the entrance waiting to pay and get in, plus it takes time to park and walk to your viewing spot, so allow for possible delays and parking time.

If you want to arrive JUST to see the sunrise, plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before the scheduled sunrise time. It will already be light by then, but it’s still fabulous watching the golden ball peek out from the clouds and take over the skies.

Once you’ve figured out what time you need to arrive at Haleakala to be at your viewing spot at the time you want, you can use Google Maps to calculate when you need to depart from your hotel or vacation rental.

Note that it can take from an hour and 30 minutes to over 2 hours to get to the park entrance at the summit of Haleakala from resort areas in west Maui like Kihei, Wailea, or Kapalua.

From the park entrance to the summit, it is a drive of about 30 minutes. We suggest setting Google Maps to the Red Hill Summit when calculating drive times to decide when to leave.

If you’re based in Paia, or in upcountry Maui, your drive time will be less.

What’s the drive up Haleakala like?

It’s a 37-mile drive (along Highways 377 and 378) from sea level to the top of the 10,023-foot volcanic crater. That’s the most elevation gain in the shortest distance on the planet.

Haleakala Highway (also called Crater Road) is paved and well-maintained.

Crater Road features lots of switchbacks along its 20-mile stretch to the very top of the crater (see map ). Some of the bends are tight and steep, with drop-offs.

There are no guardrails, and the road is not lit, so be very cautious driving up in the dark!

Obey the speed limit signs, of course, but don’t be afraid to drive slower if weather conditions are unfavorable — you may encounter fog en route any time of the year, although the clouds usually roll in later in the day.

In winter, the road may be icy, so you may want to skip driving in favor of a guided tour if you are not experienced with driving in wintry conditions on icy roads.

Note that cows and nene (Hawaiian geese) can meander onto the road, so always be on the watch for animals and birds as you drive.

The road to the top of Haleakala can cause queasiness if you are prone to motion sickness, so bring some motion sickness medicine if you think you will need it.

Where to Go: Haleakala Sunrise Spots at the Summit

There are four sunrise parking areas at the summit of Haleakala, and, depending on when you arrive, park rangers will direct you to one of the parking areas.

Each parking area is close to a sunrise viewing area. And if the weather is good, any of the four Haleakala sunrise spots offers fabulous views of sunrise over the crater.

When a parking lot is full, it is closed for sunrise parking. It is imperative to arrive early if you have your heart set on the true summit!

From highest to lowest elevation, the four areas are:

  • The Pu`u Ula ula or the Red Hill Summit (at 10,023 feet, the very top of the crater)
  • The Haleakalā Visitor Center (at 9,740 feet)
  • Kalahaku Overlook (at 9,324 feet)
  • Leleiwi Overlook (at 8,840 feet)

Puʻuʻulaʻula, or Red Hill

Puʻuʻulaʻula , or Red Hill , is a popular spot for sunrise viewing at Haleakala.

You can walk up a few steps or a ramp to the small building at the top, which offers protection from the wind. It has large windows to allow for views in every direction, including over the crater.

Of course you can also stand just outside the cabin if you want photos without glass.

The Haleakala summit Viewing Cabin at sunrise

After you view the sunrise, you can catch the mellow golden light of golden hour on the rare and endangered Haleakala silversword plants that grow here.

Note, however, that you may not be able to see the full crater from the Red Hill Summit.

Haleakala Visitor Center

The Haleakala Visitor Center offers two locations for sunrise viewing.

Many visitors line up at the railing outside the visitor center building, from where you can get spectacular views of the sun rising over the crater. This is possibly the most popular (and crowded) sunrise viewing spot at Haleakala.

But you can also walk the small trail up to the Pā Kaʻoao viewing area, also known as White Hill. This hike is just 0.2 mile each way, but it is uphill.

This viewing area is a stunning spot for a Haleakala sunrise. It’s where we watched the sun rise on our second visit to the summit for sunrise. It’s also the spot where we heard a ranger chant the E Ala E, the sunrise chant, an experience I will never forget.

If you decide you want to walk up to the Pā Kaʻoao viewing area, and want to arrive while it’s still dark out, bring a headlamp or flashlight, because the ascent is rocky and you need to be able to see where you are stepping.

Kalahaku Overlook

The Kalahaku Overlook offers an expansive view of the crater valley and is an excellent spot for a Haleakala sunrise.

You’ll likely have fewer people here than at the Red Hill Summit or the Visitor Center railing, which makes for a more serene experience.

And sometimes, when the summit is socked in, you may still have good visibility at the the Kalahaku Overlook (or the Leleiwi Overlook).

The Haleakala Crater at sunrise

Leleiwi Overlook

The Leleiwi Overlook provides excellent views into the crater and is a great lower-crowd option for Haleakala sunrise viewing.

But note that it’s a 0.15-mile walk from the parking lot to the actual overlook, over a series of steps. Bring a headlamp or flashlight to light your way if you arrive in the dark.

Tips for a Great Sunrise at Haleakala Experience

Plan your haleakala sunrise experience for early in your maui vacation.

The day after you arrive from the mainland is an excellent time to plan to head up to the top of Haleakala for sunrise.

Because at that stage of your vacation, you are still likely to be on mainland time if you are visiting from other parts of the US, and waking up so early in the morning won’t seem quite as much of a hardship as later in your stay.

Fill up your gas tank before you head up the mountain

There is no gas available inside Haleakala National Park. Be sure to fill up your gas tank before you head up the mountain!

The nearest town to Haleakala National Park where you can get gas is Pukalani, and Ohana Fuels along the Haleakala Highway opens at 4 a.m.

Golden hour at the Haleakala summit in Maui, HI

Dress warmly

BUNDLE UP!!!

Temperatures at the summit of the Haleakala crater are MUCH colder than at sea level. Think 30 degrees colder. You may even see snow in the winter.

And the wind can make things substantially more miserable from a weather perspective if you are not dressed right.

We went up in December one year, and even though we had thermal underlayers, jackets, beanies, hats, and gloves, we were still glad to be back inside our heated vehicle.

Also remember to wear thick warm socks and closed-toed shoes to keep your feet and toes from freezing.

Bringing a warm blanket, on top of dressing warmly, would not be a bad idea, since the experience can mean being outdoors for up to an hour at the summit.

Bring a thermos of hot coffee or hot chocolate

A hot beverage will be welcome as you are sitting (or standing) at the summit, waiting for the skies to lighten, signaling the start of the show.

Know where to find restrooms

Public restrooms are located at the Haleakala Visitor Center at the summit.

Even though the visitor center may not be open at sunrise, restrooms can be accessed from the outside 24/7.

There is also a public bathroom at the Kalahaku Overlook.

Carry food and snacks

The Haleakala sunrise experience lasts several hours from the time you leave your accommodation to the time you return, and even more if you stay on to explore after sunrise.

Come prepared with food and snacks!

There is no food available for purchase at Haleakala National Park, and nothing will be open en route at that time of the morning.

Arrange whatever food and snacks you need the day before.

Bring drinking water

The Haleakala Visitor Center does have a drinking water fountain, but the park recommends you carry drinking water.

Do not drink water from the taps in the restrooms, since that’s recycled water.

Colorful sunrise skies Haleakala National Park in Maui

Don’t forget a camera or charged smartphone for photos

If you are a serious hobby photographer, a Haleakala sunrise is definitely a photo op for which it’s worth bringing your “gear.”

But for most visitors, a smartphone is perfectly fine for capturing photos and shooting video.

Don’t expect great cell service

The Summit District of Haleakala National Park is remote. Cell service can be spotty or non-existent.

Download or print whatever maps, documents, or brochures you need, prior to setting out for your Haleakala sunrise experience.

Manage expectations!

Weather conditions at the top of the Haleakala crater can be less than perfect any time of the year, and conditions can change rapidly as well.

Be sure to check the weather forecast the evening before, and drive up if it looks good, hoping that visibility is great when you arrive!

But be prepared for any type of weather and know that you may not have the best conditions at sunrise on the day you visit. The summit may even be completely socked in, with poor visibility.

Sometimes, it’s possible that the overlooks, which are at lower elevations, have clear skies or better visibility than at the summit, so you may want to try there if those parking lots are not full.

At the top of the Haleakala crater in Maui at sunrise

Plan to stay on to explore if you arrive independently

If you arrive on your own for sunrise at Haleakala, plan to stay on afterwards to hike or to see the views from the overlooks.

The Sliding Sands Trail into the crater is of course a several-hour undertaking, but you can always do a part of the trail if you are time-constrained.

And there are shorter hiking trails, like the Hosmer Grove Trail, that you can do as well.

Bring sunscreen and wear proper shoes if you plan to explore

The summit of Haleakala is exposed, so sunscreen is a must once it’s daylight, especially if you plan to stay on for a bit to explore.

And wear closed-toed walking or hiking shoes with good grip if you plan to hike.

Should you go for sunrise or sunset?

While the Haleakala sunrise experience is definitely epic and gets all the hype, sunset at Haleakala is also spectacular if you have good weather.

Plus, sunset doesn’t require an early wake-up call on vacation and you don’t have to worry about reservations either.

AND you can stay on for stargazing if you are so inclined!

In the end, whether you choose a Haleakala sunrise or a Haleakala sunset is based entirely on your personal preference!

Remember your National Parks Pass if you have one!

You have to pay the park entrance fee in order to be admitted for your Haleakala sunrise experience.

At the time of writing, the entrance fee is $30.00 per car, $25.00 per motorcycle, or $15.00 per person for walk-ins.

The entrance is valid for 3 days, and valid for both the Summit District and the Kipahulu District.

Bring your credit card to pay at the automated machine if you arrive outside of the hours when the station is staffed.

Haleakala National Park accepts the America the Beautiful National Parks Pass, so be sure to bring yours if you have one!

Amazing Haleakala Sunrise!

Doug and Mike arrived promptly for our 2am pickup time. The guys were friendly and extremely informative. They got us to the top well before the crowds started gathering so we got front row railing spots. We were fortunate that the sky was cloudless allowing us to view stars that we can't see in the city. After the amazing sunrise Doug and Mike shared fascinating information about the history and people of the islands of Hawaii. The tour was well worth both the cost and loss of sleep!! MAHOLO!

Mahalo for the kind words, I will let your friendly and informative guides Doug and Mike know you had a great time with them on tour. Much Love and Aloha, Jimmy

The entire tour was well worth the money and early hour wakeup. Our guides Doug and Mark were extremely knowledgeable and made us feel the part of the Hawaiian Ohana. The sunrise was spectacular and the history lesson was great. Ending the long morning with breakfast topped it all off. Also, everybody was told to dress for winter weather when you signed up, but Doug and Mark had you covered if you forgot.

Thank you for your kind comments about our guides. We are a big family. Much love and aloha, Jimmy

My wife and I did the sunrise tour. The weather did not cooperate, however, we still had a great trip. Our tour guides were very knowledgeable.

Thank you for your kind response. We appreciate you very much. Much love and aloha, Jimmy

These guys kinda suck. They are all male drivers who kind of look like ex-cons. We had a problem at breakfast and had to wait for a new van. It happens, but starting the day with a broken bus and standing around while 5 drivers smoke cigarettes and mock each other was not ideal. Our driver, Jon-Lee was curt and rude. He was just doing the minimum required for the job. He did not exude excitement or even confidence (he almost hit a bicyclist at the start). He yelled at people for being a minute late at pick up and at leaving lunch. He yelled at a guy with MS and an artificial hip for being a minute late. He said he was strict with us because he spent 3 months in the military. Ok, dude. We took a 12 hour tour on the Big Island just a few days and it was so much better - it was perfect. The guide there was fun and friendly and made the tour informative and interactive. This guy just flew by scenic spots with the constant refrain of "ok, cameras out guys - good view coming up" as we zoomed by. He got the job done, but it was not as fun as it should have been for such an amazing place.

Aloha, I am very sorry you had a bad experience with our guide and tour. Thank you for sharing this with me. I will be talking with Jon-lee about the situation you described. Under no circumstances do we tolerate this sort of behavior. This is not what we do as a company (as you can see from our ratings). If there is another guest that was on your tour - or any other tour that feels the same about his performance, then it certainly would be grounds for termination. Our drivers go through the most extensive training program in Maui - and it takes months to complete it. No other tour company has this type of training and we pride ourselves on our guides being the best on the island. At VIE our heartsʻ goal is to respectfully share our Hawaiian culture, itʻs history and natural beauty found along the road to Hana - with much Aloha. Regarding him not taking the time to stop, there is so much to do and see along the road to Hana, it would be impossible to stop at every scenic point during a day tour. It would literally take days to do most of the things you read online that can be experienced on the road to Hana. That said, the guide should have slowed down enough so that photos could be taken by all who desired to do so. Also, as Iʻm sure you saw on tour, most of the road isnʻt just curvy with hauntingly steep cliffs and no room to walk, much less park on the shoulder, itʻs also lacking guardrails for most of the road. If there are lots of people stopped at locations along the way, it would indicate to me that there would be no safe place to park so guests could get out and walk across the road. If this was the case, it would have been in the best interest of safety to continue on. One of the main reasons why the road to Hana is so dangerous is itʻs lack of visibility, meaning other drivers canʻt see you and you canʻt see them, until itʻs too late. Thatʻs why we are in business. Itʻs almost impossible to properly tour the road to Hana while driving it yourself. You cannot navigate this road and sightsee without endangering yourself or others. Indeed, there is a lot to think about when traveling this road that most people don’t realize. Every day is different on the road to Hana there are so many variables that change on the road outside of our control throughout the day that we tend to go to the places that are the safest, with parking and paths to walk on. Before we leave for Hana we make sure to ask our guests to tell us what they would like to see and we try our very best to make sure they get to experience it. We ask everyone to keep in mind there are 11 other passengers with you... and youʻre on an adventure. We try to make sure you have a great experience - we have the only custom-built tour vans in Maui that have been specifically designed to withstand the rigors on the road to Hana (so you get to go around the backside in comfort and style). Our guides are local drivers, with most raised right here on Maui. They are very knowledgeable, fun and are very experienced with the road. They all have different personalities, they do like to joke with each other out on the road and whenever they are waiting together. Theyʻre neighbors, friends, and have known each other a long time in most instances. All of the drivers from our company as well as other companies are like a big family and take care of each other. The road is not a fun place to have a breakdown, flat tire etc. Jon-Lee has been with us for some time. Some guides/drivers have been with us for 20-25 years working together with our family business. We can’t help the way they look individually. And many of their tattoos have cultural significance - as well as personal meanings. Iʻm sure they would have had no problem “talking story” about it. Overall, they are great people to work with and love what they do. Regardless, I am going to look deeply into this as we realize it is very, very important to the future of our company and we care about you and your experience. Weʻre here to serve our guests to the best of our abilities, and with much Aloha. Sincerely, Jimmy Hutaff Manager

Definitely recommend that you book the tour before coming to Hawaii. If you drive it yourself the driver misses too much. Our tour guide was Travis a Hana native who knew everyone one and all the best waterfalls. He gave us a lot of history of the people and the land. It is a long day but everyone was still happy at the end! I would definitely do it again.

valley isle excursions haleakala sunrise

Mahalo for your great review, Travis is an amazing guide who loves the road to Hana and can’t wait to drive everyday and share with our guest the love and beauty of our people and islands. All of our guides are unique and love what they do. Travis is a blessing to our VIE OHana. Until we meet again ( a hui hou ) Aloha, Jimmy

First...I NEVER write reviews, mainly due to all of the manipulation that can be done, and most of the three or less stars come from whiny people that expect too much. This time I will make an exception. I took a chance on Valley Isle from a referral from a couple I met at breakfast days earlier. I could not have been more pleased. Billy, our driver and guide arrived exactly on time at 2:25 am to pick my wife and I up ( on time performance is big to me). From there on it only went up hill (figuratively and literally) from there. After the continental breakfast, we were joined by Billy's grandson Shane who was his assistant for the trip. I really was not looking forward to a narrated tour at 3 am for the whole trip up the hill, and i was not disappointed. Billy gave us just enough instruction and information on what to expect for the trip up so I could get a couple extra minutes of shut eye on the way. Arriving at the summit, our guides whisked us carefully to the bathrooms and right to the railing for the best possible view for the sunrise. Billy and Shane made sure those who needed, were given insulated, hooded ponchos for warmth ( it was about 48F that morning) From there it only got better ( and this coming from a perpetual sceptic) ! The trip down the hill was inclusive of three planned stops with stunning views and really good stories with a bunch of information too boot. Most tours I have ever been on are scripted and come across as such. Billy made you feel like you were having a conversation with an old friend and encouraged you too ask questions along the way. I can safely say if you are on the fence about who to choose, Valley Isle is the only tour company I will recommend to my family, friends or strangers that I meet. When it was all said and done, Haleakala is an experience best served from a local guide your first time around. Thank you again Billy and Shane. See you our next trip !

I'm glad you enjoyed your tour with us! I will be sure to let Billy and Shane know how pleased your were and encourage them to keep up the good work! Thank you for your positive feedback! A Hui Hou (until we meet again)

The Haleakala Visitor Center, located at an elevation of approximately 3,000 meters, is known as one of the best places to watch the sunrise and is a popular destination for tourists from around the world. On a clear morning, the mystical sunrise from the top of Haleakala is an unforgettable experience.

On this tour, you will learn about Maui’s nature and culture as an NAI (The National Association for Interpretation) -certified guide explains the geology and ecology of Haleakala National Park in an easy-to-understand manner. In the vast Haleakala National Park, you will encounter a variety of natural environments. The summit of Haleakala, above the clouds, is an otherworldly wilderness that has been used as a filming location for movies in the past. At Haleakala, you may also encounter the silversword, an alpine plant found only in the Himalayas and on Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaii, and the Nene Goose, the state bird of Hawaii.

After visiting Haleakala National Park, your guide will take you to Kula in the Upcountry, where lavender cultivation and grazing flourishes; Makawao, the town of the Hawaiian cowboy “paniolo”; Paia, a North Shore town of surfers and; and the town of Haiku, with its roots in the pineapple industry and home to the 4th Marine Division in the 1940s.
