Celebrate the USA’s Independence on a Tall Ship!

July 4th boston sailing & firework celebration.

Join the fun on Boston’s tall ships for a July 4th celebration! We cruise in Boston Harbor while enjoying the Boston Pops’ simulcast. We offer a cash bar on the ships with bottled water, sodas, and adult beverages. This sailing adventure in Boston is the perfect way to celebrate Independence Day!

Our ships are too large to enter the Charles River, where the fireworks are launched, so after a short cruise through the harbor, we attempt to position the ship amongst all the other revelers outside the Charles River for a partially obstructed view. Weather can have an impact on the view of the fireworks.

There are no refunds, and in the event the fireworks are canceled or rained out, a company credit will be issued.

What to Bring

As it can be breezy on the water (even in a heatwave), you may want to bring a light pullover or sweater with you. Snacks (chips, etc.) and beverages are available for purchase on board for you to enjoy during your sail. A cash bar offering mixed drinks and beer/wine is available. If you prefer to use a credit card, drink tickets can be purchased online before your cruise.

Where to Watch the Boston 4th of July Fireworks in 2023

By Todd Plummer

Skyline of Boston with fireworks.

There are two things that matter most in Boston : summer and celebrating freedom. Naturally, Independence Day , and specifically the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular held on the Charles River Esplanade, are a tentpole of any Bostonian’s summer plans.

Each July 4th, the city swells with activity: residents take to their roof decks, suburbanites ride the commuter rail into town to gather on the banks of the Charles, and travelers come from around the world to catch a glimpse of this waterfront celebration of music and pyrotechnics that has enchanted our fair city for (just about) five decades. Here are the best places to watch the Boston 4th of July fireworks in 2023—whether you’re a seasoned local or a first-time visitor—and the events where you're bound to find the crowds, the drinks, and the air of patriotism simply intoxicating.

All listings featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. If you book something through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

The Charles River Esplanade

Everybody needs to do it at least once. Watching the fireworks from the Esplanade —roughly between the Museum of Science down to the Boston University Bridge—is a quintessential Boston experience, although not suggested for the agoraphobic. If you want to go straight into the belly of the beast, gates open at the Hatch Shell’s lawn at 9 a.m., and spots fill up notoriously quickly. The fireworks kick off at 10:30 p.m.

If reserved seating is more your vibe, then get a ticket to Community Boating’s annual SAILabration fundraiser, the only event that offers reserved seating on the Esplanade on July 4. It will cost you $100 per adult and $75 per child, but that price includes plenty of space to stretch your legs, as well as unlimited water, seltzer, and Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream to beat the heat, so the cost of admission pays for itself.

Every Independence Day, the Charles River chokes with anchored boats awaiting the evening’s fireworks. If you can’t simply score an invite on a friend’s boat, a rented kayak will do just fine—and beloved outfitter Paddle Boston ’s launch location in Cambridge’s Kendall Square, just across the river from the Hatch Shell, is an easy five-minute row to the heart of the action. This year, Paddle Boston will also offer guided tours in their 10-person canoes—a great option for solo visitors looking to make new friends, or groups of friends looking to explore Boston from the water on the city’s most exciting night of the year.

If being paddled around is more your speed than doing the paddling yourself, the Charles Riverboat Company is doing a rain-or-shine sunset sailing aboard the Valiant, from 6:15 p.m. to 11 p.m. Kick back and relax while enjoying an open bar, a dessert buffet, and an unbeatable view of the fireworks over the city’s skyline. Tickets are $225 and can be purchased via phone .

Night Shift Beer Garden Esplanade is a prime spot from which to view the fireworks and throw back a few craft brews. If you’re spending the day out with your pets, this could be a good spot for your four-legged friends: this is one of the few outdoor bars in the city that allows dogs. Night Shift will offer extended hours from noon until 10 p.m. on July 4th, and are not requiring tickets for admission. The sprawling space accommodates 400 people at a time, so even if there is a line to get in, chances are that it will move quickly.

From the sky

How about something a little more… elevated? The View Boston, an observation deck that occupies the top three floors of the Prudential Tower, is offering a special adults-only July 4th viewing party. The $75 tickets grant access to both indoor and outdoor viewing options—making this a great option in case of inclement weather—and includes two drink tickets. Regular everyday admission starts at $29.99 per adult, so the inclusion of two drinks on Boston’s biggest night (not to mention golden hour admission to the city’s most coveted Instagram spot of the moment, without any errant toddlers ruining your shot) makes this a pretty good deal.

From Cambridge, Charlestown, and remotely

The classic spot from which to watch the fireworks in Cambridge is the grassy quadrangle at M.I.T., where a giant screen live-streams the Boston Pops concert. The view from this side of the river—with the city skyline in the background and more sweeping vantage points over the Charles River—might just beat being on the Esplanade itself.

For something with more local flavor, head across the Charles over to Charlestown, the oldest neighborhood in Boston—also known as “The Town”——where The Anchor , a sprawling waterfront beer garden, offers plenty of space to move around and a clear line of sight to the fireworks barge. And if you’d rather catch the fireworks from the comfort of your own home, tune in on Bloomberg TV, or WHDH Channel 7.

Don’t forget about a nightcap

Boston is a hub for innovative drinks these days . After the fireworks wrap, keep the party going with festive cocktails at some of the city’s favorite hotspots, many of which are walking distance from the Esplanade. Each of Chef Jason Santos’ three restaurants—Citrus & Salt, Nash Bar & Stage, and Buttermilk & Bourbon—will offer a “Color Me America” cocktail, featuring 792 Bourbon, apple pie spiced cider, black walnut bitters, and a sparkler right in your glass.

At The Liberty, a Luxury Collection Hotel, which stands conveniently across the street from the Esplanade, head over to the bumping Alibi Bar & Lounge for a special “Liber-Tea,” made of Maker’s Mark, muddled strawberries, green tea, lemon, and a hint of simple syrup.

4th of July Winthrop Fireworks Cruise Was a Perfect Evening

This is not the overcrowded Boston fireworks experience on the Charles River. Instead this is a schooner up to Winthrop for a fantastic view of their fireworks and it was well worth it. It was fun to be on a sailboat with a reasonable number of people. The snacks were plentiful and we wish we'd skipped eating dinner before hand because there was more than enough to eat on the boat. The fireworks were excellent. Crew very nice. We recommend this one. Get tickets online well in advance of the date as we noticed it did sell out.

I wondered if the tickets for the sunset/fireworks cruise July 2nd would be worth the money and they definitely were. The tour wasn't over booked so there was plenty of room to find a seat or stand by the railing. Crew was very friendly and even let us stand in the bridge and watch them work. Bartender was fast and friendly and there was a full bar though it said beer/wine only. The view of the city was incredible with the sun setting in the background; we picked out all the spots we'd toured the last few days. And then the firework show was amazing! Definitely recommend for the beautiful views and serene setting though I don't think it would be fun with small very active children.

We would recommend Classic Harbor line highly! The ease of purchasing tickets and boarding the boat was great. I would recommend getting to the dock even earlier than recommended (15-30 minutes) since there are prime seats on the deck. The food was plentiful and we didn't have to wait at either of the 2-3 bars.

This was a great experience, the weather was great and helped with a beautiful sunset, the fireworks at Winthrop were grand (didn't miss the Boston Pops fireworks, always too crowded), the crew was professional, the guy on the microphone was instructive and had a sense of humor, the food was average for this type of situation. All in all, couldn't expect more, my teen daughter actually enjoyed it, which is hard, trust me ;-)

One great day of touring and fun. SAM I AM, was our tour guide who was very informative and comical. We had a great time and would recommend him for less sensitive travelers. Thanks Sam! Tony and I had a great time!!

boston 4th of july fireworks cruise

It was a great night along Boston Harbor! Finding the ticket office is a little challenging, it's on the harbor side of a retail complex and there are many harbor tours, but we found it. We cruised the harbor and enjoyed a wonderful night and then saw the USS Constitution hire a cannon at sunset. Well worth the money for such a beautiful evening!

Fourth of July Fireworks Cruise on the Charles. Pure magic aboard the Double Eagle - a vintage lobster boat!

Welcome aboard the Double Eagle Fourth of July cruise for a magical evening of fireworks, Boston Pops music and summer breezes on the Charles River. We will meet you at 6 PM on the Cambridge esplanade, just behind the The Esplanade Condos. (The corner of Charles Parkway and Binney Street but on the river of course!) A private launch will pick you up and whisk you to the Double Eagle - very James Bond - and back again at evening's end at 11 PM.

The launch will bring you to the Double Eagle that will be anchored just down river from the Hatch Shell - the absolute perfect place to hear the Boston Pops and view the July 4th fireworks!

Feel free to bring champagne, cold beer or your favorite adult beverage; mixers, soft drinks, glasses, ice, sandwiches and delicious hors hors d'oeuvres will await you.

This is a one of a kind, cruise with space for only 22 passengers. This cruise appeals to people who do not want to be aboard a big crowded boat with loud music or caught in throngs of people on the esplanade. This is an exclusive, intimate event aboard a real lobster boat!

Bring friends, family, kids, and bring yourselves to this special evening on the Charles. Be sure to also bring a sweater as a cool breeze can blow across the bow even in the summer.

What to expect? The best Fourth of July experience available in Boston. You will be on the water, away from the crowds and noise with great views of the fireworks! There is nothing like it!

About the Double Eagle: The Double Eagle is a vintage lobster boat built in 1973 by America's oldest boat builders, the Hodgdon Brothers, established in 1815. She is an authentic old-school lobster boat, made entirely of wood, the kind they don't make any more. After years of lobstering on the Maine seacoast, she retired to the slightly warmer waters of Cape Ann where she spends her days in Salem Harbor and northward taking local and out-of-town passengers for harbor tours, seal watches and sunset cruises. She also has enjoyed many a celebration - birthdays, engagement parties and anniversaries. The captain, Walter, is known to spin a salty yarn or too, and is damn good host too!

Parking is available at 23 Cambridge Way Parking in the Royal Sonesta, and at the CambridgeSide Galleria Mall.

July 4th Fireworks Boat Rentals

A canoe or kayak on the Charles River is by far the best seat in the house for Boston’s Fourth of July Fireworks. The event organizers welcome boaters, and the view can’t be beat! Read about the specific July 4th Boating Guidelines and “Captains Map” . Ten-Person Canoe Tour off-site rentals will guarantee a phenomenal view!-->

Rental Options

Launch from and return to our Boston location on Soldier’s Field Road in Allston/Brighton on the night of the fireworks. The boat must be returned by 1am on July 5. You’ll paddle about 4 miles (~1.5 hours) to the fireworks.

Launch from and return to our Cambridge location in Kendall Square on the night of the fireworks. The boat must be returned by midnight on July 4. You’ll paddle about 5 minutes to the fireworks.

We expect that security details will be the same as last year. Please download the “Captains Map” and Massachusetts State Police update for  security measures. Below here are some bullet points to note:

  • There is a security zone around the fireworks barge between the Mass. Ave and the Longfellow Bridges. Boats must be inside the security zone and anchored by 8:15pm. If you arrive at the bridge after 8:15pm you will not be allowed in.
  • We recommend bringing or making your own anchor.  You’ll need a weight of at least 10lbs and at least 35ft of line. (A milk jug filled with sand works)
  • From Kendall Sq. you should arrive by 6:45pm to get under the Longfellow Bridge in time. Paddlers picking up our boat from Allston/Brighton location you should arrive no later than 5:30pm.
  • Many paddlers prefer to start later and stay outside of the security zone where the view is still great. From Boston, anywhere upstream of Magazine beach is still a good view and from Kendall, heading toward the Museum of Science is a more peaceful view.

Registration/Cancellation Policy for July 4 Rentals

  • Rentals includes a paddle, life jacket, and lights for each paddler.
  • Bring a photo I.D. when you pick up your boat.
  • All boats rented in Allston/Brighton must be picked up by 8pm on July 4; all boats rented in Kendall Square must be picked up by 10pm. We reserve the right to rent remaining boats to others after these times, and no refunds or credits will be issued if your boat is no longer available.
  • The rental charge will be refunded, less a 10% administrative fee, if you cancel your rental by 5pm on June 27. After this date, the rental fee is non-refundable.
  • In the event that the fireworks and concert are cancelled due to weather before you pick up your boat, we will refund the rental fee, less a 10% administrative fee. If the fireworks and concert are cancelled after you pick up your boat, the rental fee is non-refundable.
  • Each participant will be required to sign a waiver of liability .
  • The State Police restrict boating access within a perimeter around the fireworks barge. Renters will be provided with information on this restriction before launching. Learn more>>
  • Paddle Boston will provide boat lights for all rentals. All kayaks must have an all around white light, turned on and visible, after sunset. Be sure the light is not hidden inside of your life vest. Cellphone lights do not meet this requirement. Additional lights are recommended and only increase your own safety to ensure you are visible to motor vessels.
  • Kayakers are advised to use extreme caution after the fireworks end and boats begin to break anchor. Even with no wake rules in place, the large amount of boats breaking anchor and getting underway at the same time will move large amounts of water. It is recommended that kayaks operate up and down river at the outermost edges of the river and allow motor vessels to stay toward the center.

Safety plans detailed ahead of Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular

Guest artists at the annual concert and fireworks show include en vogue, locash and mandy gonzalez, by matt fortin • published june 30, 2023 • updated on july 2, 2023 at 6:38 am.

A beloved Fourth of July tradition in Boston is set to bring music and fireworks to the Back Bay once again, with the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular returning to the Charles River Esplanade.

The annual event — which will feature music by the Boston Pops and special guests along with a fireworks display at the Hatch Memorial Shell — is planned for 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular will follow days of celebrations and activities from Boston Harborfest, which is getting underway at noontime Friday with a kick-off event at Downtown Crossing.

Organizers and public safety agencies held a news conference on Friday morning to share more information about the event itself, as well as security measures.

"This event is the culmination of hard work and strategic planning to ensure everyone can celebrate the birth of our nation here in front of the Hatch Shell," Secretary of the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs Rebecca Tepper said.

Tepper said that staff would be working around the clock before, during and after the event to ensure the park is in "excellent condition." She also noted that this year, the dress rehearsal on Monday is closed to the public.

The concert on the Fourth, though, is open to the public and free.

“We are mindful of how precious our democracy is," the Director of Artistic Planning for the Boston Pops Dennis Alvis said. "The Boston Symphony Orchestra is deeply honored to host this annual patriotic celebration and to bring our community together through the power and joy of music.”

Massachusetts State Police Colonel John Mawn called the event one of his agency's "preeminent missions" of the entire year.

"The footprint of this venue and its unique physical features including winding paths, a wide promenade, several bridges, flanked by a roadway and a river, ensure any security mission has equally unique challenges," Mawn said. "This team of joint law enforcement and public safety agencies have met that challenge in the past, and we rise to meet it again this year with a multi-tiered, carefully thought-out, rigorous operations plan."

Col. Mawn said that attendees can expect to see many uniformed troopers, police officers, DCR members and members of the National Guard. K-9 teams will also be on site, as will marine units and the air wing.

Additionally, Mawn said that intelligence operations are ongoing behind the scenes.

"These professionals have been gathering and analyzing information for weeks, scouring the intelligence for any potential threats for this event," Col. Mawn said. "I’m happy to say currently we’re aware of no credible threats."

Representatives from the local FBI office and Boston EMS also spoke, emphasizing their presence and work at the event.

MBTA Transit Police Chief Kenneth Green announced that fares on buses, subways and commuter rails will be free after 9:30 p.m. on the holiday

Wondering where to best view the fireworks? Since the Boston Pops 4th of July is a free outdoor event, seating is first-come, first-serve. The concert will take place at Boston’s historical Hatch Shell on the Esplanade. Therefore, we highly recommend showing up early to snag some space.

Thanks to the restriction of many access points, public transit is suggested. In past years* the ideal vantage point to watch the pyrotechnics over the Boston Common was by the Boston Common itself.

Other surrounding streets such as Beacon, Arlington, Boylston, Tremont, and Park also offer views. Additionally, visitors can score vistas from the mid-to-upper floors of surrounding buildings in Beacon Hill, Back Bay, downtown Boston, and the Theatre District.
