Along Europe's Scenic "Yellow Roads"

Discover cultural footprints forever present... O ver the centuries, the island of Sicily was colonized by the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Muslims, Normans and assorted others before becoming part of Spain, then the Bourbon Kingdom, and finally part of Italy. And today...

Private tour of palermo's teatro massimo, behind-the-scenes at italy's largest opera house, palermo's teatro massimo vittorio emanuele.

The largest theatre in Italy and Europe's third-largest opera house, Palermo's Teatro Massimo Vittorio Emanuele opened in 1897 – 22 years after construction began – with a production of Verdi's "Falstaff." Its neoclassical exterior was inspired by ancient Greek and Roman architecture, while its auditorium reflects the style of the Renaissance and features excellent acoustics, as you'll see (and hear) on your guided tour of this grand venue. Closed for 23 years starting in the 1970s, the Teatro Massimo – the location where the final scenes of "The Godfather, Part III" were filmed – was restored and reopened in time for its centennial in 1997.

Reception and dinner at a private villa

An exclusive reception, dinner and art tour hosted by a family member at a private villa in palermo.

Built in the 18th century for the King of Naples, Ferdinand I and Queen Maria Carolina of Borbone (an older sister of Queen Marie Antoinette of France) during their exile in Sicily, Villa Chiaramonte Bordonaro is still home to the Barons Chiaramonte Bordonaro today, and its gardens rank among the most beautiful parks in Palermo. The villa's current owners often open up their home for special events… like your exclusive private visit and gala dinner, to which you are welcomed by the son of the current Baroness, who hosts a tour of his family's villa and their private art collection housed in a building designed by Ernesto Basile, the architect of the Teatro Massimo.

Verdura Golf & Spa Resort

Nights 3 and 4

An alluring Sicilian escape....

An irresistible destination boasting miles of private Mediterranean coastline, Verdura Golf & Spa Resort is a place where your room will seem woven subtly into the Sicilian landscape... where you'll enjoy a true sense of space and uninterrupted views of the azure waters from your private terrace.

Sicily is an island of wild beauty and history, with a culture that dates back to antiquity. The tour encapsulated the passion and pride of a Sicily one must experience.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Italy; however, you do not need a visa for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, you should contact an embassy or consulate of Italy to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Protection Plan

Effective for plans purchased as of July 1, 2021:

Tauck's Guest Protection

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. Since the non-insurance cancellation waiver takes care of the land package cancellation fees already, this benefit reimburses the airfare cancellation charges up to the value of your original airfare purchase.
  • Trip Interruption –  If you have to interrupt your tour for covered reasons, the plan provides reimbursement to catch up to your tour or return home.
  • Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
  • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.
  • Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.
  • Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by Carefree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $559  per person

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Cancellation Fees with Tauck's Guest Protection Plan:

Loss of Guest Protection fee, per person

Cancellation Fees without Tauck's Guest Protection Plan :

60 days or more before departure = $600 per person

59-8 days before departure = $900 per person

In the event of an unforeseen circumstance beyond our control, Tauck reserves the right to amend the cancellation terms outlined herein.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition which might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

If you are a resident of the U.S. traveling internationally, no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Italy. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country traveling internationally, please contact an embassy or consulate of Italy to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for your travel.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

A Sicilian Odyssey is an active and extensive tour. To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. Sicily is home to innumerable historic buildings and sites, some dating from antiquity. Therefore, roads, walkways and architecture will present challenges for you if you have difficulty walking independently and, therefore, we do not recommend this tour if you have such difficulty. You will encounter cobblestone streets, narrow passageways, and steep and winding hill town roads. The amount of walking you do at the various sites and towns is at your sole discretion; you may remain on the coach during any of these walking excursions.

Examples of our walking itinerary:

  • Agrigento 2 hours of walking over mainly even terrain
  • Noto - cobblestoned but flat walkways
  • Siracusa - uneven terrain at Archaeological Park
  • Taormina - steep walkways throughout city center

In addition, coach travel along the many "Yellow Roads" on this tour are very windy and may cause you some discomfort if you are prone to motion sickness. If you are, we advise bringing motion sickness remedies or medication with you.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters. Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

Sicily has a typical Mediterranean climate with mild and wet winters and hot, dry summers. Summer temperatures are often above 90°F (32°C) during the day and drop to about 70°F (21°C) at night. In the fall the temperatures range from 60 to 80°F (16 to 27°C). Rainfall can occur anytime throughout the year, though the summer months are the driest.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

When packing for your trip to Sicily, it is important to keep in mind the time of year you are traveling and the current weather conditions for that time. The weather in Italy is temperate and unpredictable. Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.

In Europe, especially in finer restaurants, it is customary to dress somewhat formally. Slacks or a dress for women and a jacket for men are acceptable dining attire. It is advisable to avoid wearing jeans, sneakers or shorts for dinner. You may also wish to dress up a bit for the welcome reception and the farewell dinner, but certainly be comfortable.

Most Catholic churches in Italy require that your knees and shoulders be covered when you enter, even during the hot days of summer.

You will find a hair dryer located in your hotel guest room. By law in Italy, irons and ironing boards are not made available to guests at the hotels. Valet laundry and dry cleaning services are available for a fee.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your trip to Italy:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

sell 12 Day South & Sicily Tour 2024

12 Days / 10 Nights   Starting at $3695 PP (Land Rate)

There's no place on earth like Sicily. A true melting pot of cultures, you'll see Greek and Asian influences in the exotic architecture, unique cuisine and faces of her people. If you happen to be of Sicilian heritage, you'll be surprised by how the 'old country' has very much joined the 21st century while retaining its special charm.

FRIDAY : Boarding your overnight flight, you’re off on the adventure of a lifetime!

SATURDAY : Benvenuti a Roma , the eternal city! We are pleased to offer complimentary transfers from the Rome airport to your hotel at scheduled times. Your Perillo representative will be at the airport to greet you.

There will be time to relax this afternoon before dinner with fine local vino at our hotel.

SUNDAY : This morning, you’ll get to experience a delicious Italian breakfast, complete with cappuccino, fresh juices, croissants, fresh breads along with salami, cheeses and of course bacon and eggs!

Next, we board our chariot for a panoramic tour of Imperial Rome including the Roman Forum, the Circus Maximus, and the Great Synagogue build in the heart of the Jewish quarter. Then we’ll enter the Colosseum, reliving the brutal entertainment of the gladiators and the lions, refereed by the Emperor himself.

Tonight, we enjoy a fun dinner out.

*Colosseum entrance subject to ticket availability*

MONDAY : This morning, after a delicious breakfast, we’re off on the beautiful drive south to Pompeii. We’ll travel back in time to the fateful year of 79 AD. A city perfectly preserved by the ash that rained-down from Mount Vesuvius, you’ll see the tragic fossils of people attempting to escape with their children and dogs. You’ll be amazed to see the streets, homes, and stores still perfectly intact.

Next, we continue our journey to Amalfi, where we check in to our beautiful hotel.

Tonight, we enjoy an authentic Neapolitan dinner in our hotel.

TUESDAY : This morning, we board our hydrofoil to the world’s most enchanting island – Capri. We’ll enjoy a private boat tour around the island (weather permitting). We’ll cruise by the magnificent Faraglioni, Capri’s iconic rock formations which tower above the Mediterranean Sea.

Next, we visit one of the lesser known but equally beautiful sea caves, the Grotta Bianca. Then we’ll have free time to explore the island on our own or take advantage of a special optional excursion with our tour leader.

This afternoon we return to Amalfi where you can relax before you head out for dinner on your own. Ask your tour guide for some recommendations.

WEDNESDAY : We thought you would enjoy a full day of leisure so today you are free to explore this beautiful city on your own…or you can relax at the hotel pool!

THURSDAY : This morning we drive South to Calabria to board our ferry across the Straits of Messina to Sicily!

Our home in Taormina will be the great Villa Diodoro, which boasts stunning views of Mt. Etna and the bay of Naxos. Tonight, we enjoy a delicious Sicilian dinner in our hotel.

*This will be a long day so remember to wear comfortable clothes & shoes!

FRIDAY : After this morning’s leisurely tour, you’ll know why Taormina is known as the “Jewel of Italy.“ Its winding streets and secluded gardens are truly enchanting. The snow-covered volcano, Mt. Etna, serves as a dramatic backdrop to the well-preserved Greek and Roman outdoor theaters we’ll be visiting.

This afternoon is all yours! Why not stroll the medieval streets lined with interesting little shops, take a dip in the hotel pool, or treat yourself to one of Sicily’s greatest inventions – the cannoli! It’s like heaven in your mouth!

Tonight, we enjoy dinner and great “Vino Siciliano” at a fine local restaurant.

SATURDAY : This morning, you’ll meet one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Mt. Etna is in an almost constant state of eruption. But don’t worry – we’ll keep a safe distance!

The fertile volcanic soil supports extensive agriculture, orchards, and vineyards. So, let’s visit a local winery for a tour, a wine tasting and a light lunch!

Tonight, you can enjoy dinner on your own. Have you tried pesce spada yet? Swordfish is Sicily’s favorite seafood.

SUNDAY : We’re off to Palermo, stopping along the way for a fascinating visit of Cefalù, a coastal town in Northern Sicily. We enjoy a guided visit of the famous Norman cathedral, a 12th century fortress-like structure with elaborate Byzantine mosaics and soaring twin towers. The Cathedral has a founding legend: Normal King Roger II made a vow to God during a dangerous sailing trip from Southern Italy. His life was in great danger and he promised to build a wonderful church in the place where he would have landed, if he survived. Roger did in fact survive, disembarked in Cefalù and kept his promise and built a cathedral there.

We’ll have some free time to walk around this charming town, shop and have lunch on our own before heading to Palermo.

Tonight, enjoy dinner on your own. Be sure to end your dinner with a delicious dessert that originated in Palermo: The Cassata Siciliana.

MONDAY : Today we will start our day by visiting the Cathedral, built on the ruins of the largest mosque, which houses the relics of Rosalia, patron saint of Palermo. Then we will walk through Ballarò, one of the oldest street markets in Sicily, taking in an explosion of colors and scents of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and fish. Vendors shout very loud—in Sicilian dialect—to attract people and to promote their specialties. This will be the best way to experience the unique atmosphere of daily life in Sicily. After visiting the market, we will admire the grandiose Fontana Pretoria, and we will end our walk at the Theater of the Sun, also known as “The Quattro Canti”, the heart of the old city.

This afternoon you will be free to enjoy it as you please… perhaps to buy some last-minute gifts to take home with you.

Tonight, we enjoy our final dinner together in our hotel.

TUESDAY : This morning we head to the Palermo airport for our flight home, arriving in the USA the same day. While we say “ arrivederci ” to Italy, we realize we’re taking a little piece of it back home with us….and maybe some wine too! Arrivederci Bella Sicilia!

The Southern Italy and Sicily tour was fabulous! The places we visited were varied and filled with culture, history, and wonderful sights. It was highly diverse. Our travel guide Raffaelle, was so fabulous. He made our trip. Perillo tours are highly organized, excellently guided and competitively priced. Definitely will use Perillo again. I first heard of Perillo as a child living in the Bronx, NY. All the people from the Arthur Avenue secition used them, and as you can see we still are!

We just went to thank you for all your assistance in helping us plan our trip to Italy. We enjoyed every aspect of the trip. This was our first European trip and we did not know what to expect. Thank you again for your great service.

Well organized tour, very good accommodation, excelent quality of tasted food including the one on markets. Cooking class led by excellent chef cook with sense of humor. Professional guides, professional drivers. There is nothing to complain about. I'll certainly come back to Sicily. One comment: please leave more time to visit Noto.

Sicilian Landscapes: Catania-Catania (8 days/7 nights)

Was an odd experience. It was like a revolving door of bus mates. We would lose or gain some at different points in the tour depending where they started. Tour was in 3 languages (Spanish, Italian English) which needs to be clear when booking as I believed I was on an English only tour. That said I understand enough in the other languages to know the English got less information. It would also be nice if a question is asked in another language that the answer and question get translated to the rest of the group as it may have been info we'd like to hear. Another tip would be to always give info in the same language order. You tend to phase out with so much talking and only realise it's your language when it's half way through. Tour itinerary was great, cover alot if the must sees in Sicily. Included dinners were good, but has better at other restaurants when I was staying outside of the tour.

Best of Sicily - 8 Days (Small Group Tour) Tour

Best of Sicily - 8 Days (Small Group Tour)

Very pleased with the tour. The guides were personable and well informed. The hotels very nice and the chosen restaurants and variety of offered foods exceeded expectations. Only complaint is that I wish tips had been included. There was a lot of confusion as to who should get tipped and what was the appropriate amount. All in all I feel that it was a great mix of seeing Sicily yet having free time to explore independently.

Sicily tour was very good. Angelo-the tour guide is avery good guide and a very good person. I just recommend background i for to be brief or provide them during the bus drive so that we can have plenty of free time in each area. Malta trip is okay-except that the itinerary is not followed by the guide. In addition-it's too much detail in one location that shortens the time to see more and prevents having free time.

Charming Sicily Food & Wine Small Group Tour - 8 days

Overall our tour was wonderful. We had a great time. Denise, especially was a very good guide, very knowledgable and personable. The cooking class and our Palermo Street Food tour was, probably my favorites. A few areas that could have been improved upon: - A little more communication prior to the tour would have been reassuring. In this day of fraud it is a little unnerving to send all that money into the internet and not get much of a response. - The final communication, our itinerary, was a definite problem. We were told by Tour Radar that we would receive it 10-14 days before we left. The tour operator (ClickTours/Mossimo) told us we would receive it 8 days before we left. I finally called Tour Radar 6 days before we left

The Best Highlights 7 Day Sicily Tour 2024 - Max 7 people

A mixture of adventure, history, special surprises, good food, nice people, nice guides and relaxation. A mix of nature, towns and seaside. We wanted to stay in a quiet rural location, so staying at the vineyard-farm was perfect for us. Friendly hosts, private room and bath, warm & friendly Sicilian-style dinners prepared by our farm family hosts! Guides were on time, dependable and friendly; English ability from fully adequate to good. We always felt safe. We had a glimpse into a world very different from our own.

Sicily was great, the transportation was very good, fellow passengers were a great bunch who mixed well. Food and wine experiences were good, but for me the highlight of the trip was ancient and modern Sicily. The tour guide was lovely and tried very hard but with limited English understanding, was not able to provide any significant on board commentary or quell the frustrations that accrued as we drove from place to place. Accommodation throughout the tour was average to good and the weather was just perfect.

Reviews of small group tours to sicily.

Sicily I amazing. Sicily Activities gave us an excellent tour. It was very personalized, particularly taking into account the needs of our 82 year old mom. The pace was slow as she needed it to be. They even rented an electric wheelchair for her, at no extra cost and the guides helped us carry it. We loved the overall experience.
I can’t say enough good things about our experience in Sicily thanks to Mossimo and his team. Excellent, informative tour guides…Denise, Carlos, Antonio and Sem. The cooking class may have been the highlight, but all of the activities were fun and the pace of the tour, planned activities/free time mix was perfect. Will definitely recommend!
Generally speaking the tour was good. Hotels, foods, itinerary, tour guide were all satisfied. the only thing made me unhappy even panic was no taxi driver waiting at Catania airport arrivals although I booked in advance. It's about 22:30, I phoned the emergency number, the lady replied in Italian, we could not understand each other, so she shouted and put down phone. Then I asked an Italian for help. He made a call and got one can speak English. I was told the driver was in a airport bar, then I found the bar was closed and the driver was at outside of the bar, eventually he took me to the hotel, that was very late. The people responds emergency number cannot speak English?! The taxi driver 'with a sign with your surname on it' was not waiting at the arrivals as I was told. What was a shock for a person arrived in Catania first time at late evening and start a tour next morning?!

8 things to know before going to Sicily

Jamie Ditaranto

Mar 1, 2024 • 5 min read

Multigenerational group of tourists standing in front of panoramic view of Mediterranean Sea

Sicily has a ton of personality and a few unique quirks – here's what you need to know © Jimena Roquero / Stocksy

Sicily is an island of mythic proportions, highly regarded for its natural beauty and the deep well of history it embodies in its ancient archaeological sites and luxe palazzos. A proud triangle, the island has three coastlines and two island chains and is home to the most active volcano in Europe, the indomitable Mount Etna .

In pursuit of claiming my Italian citizenship, I spent five summery months living in the Sicilian heartland, exploring the coast and ruins and immersing myself in the daily life of small-town Sicily. Preceded by its mafia history (both the fictional and the real), it is often misunderstood by visitors coming to the island with Godfather-inspired expectations, but there is a lot more to discover in Sicily beyond the stereotypes.

Here’s what you need to know before visiting.

1. Fly in and out of two different airports

The most efficient way to plan a tour through Sicily is to fly into Palermo and leave from Catania , or vice versa. Palermo and Catania are the island’s two largest cities and are located at opposite ends of the island. Each has its own airport with direct flights to the mainland and other European cities. There is also a small airport in Trapani, on the west coast – ideal if you want to visit the Egadi Islands – but here you’ll only find flights to and from mainland Italian airports.

A man and woman sit in a car while driving in Sicily. The camera is looking out the front windshield to reveal a historic town ahead

2. Public transport in Sicily is not for the weak

Traveling by train through Sicily is convenient if you stick to the coasts and plan to travel out of main hubs like Palermo, Messina or Catania. However, the schedules are not always reliable, so you should plan plenty of buffer time into your itinerary if you choose to do Sicily without a car. Many of Sicily’s major destinations, like beachy San Vito Lo Capo and the historical hilltop town of Erice , are inaccessible by train, but you can get there by bus. Forgoing a car rental in Sicily is doable, but your trip will be much easier with a set of wheels.

3. Plan to move around

Sicily’s major attractions are dispersed throughout the island, so you will feel limited if you choose one city as your base for the whole trip. There are so many wonderful towns and islands, beautiful hotels, charming bed-and-breakfasts and a vast array of sights – from the ruins of Agrigento to the volcanoes of the Aeolian Islands , and all the historical villages and sunny vineyards in between.

4. Understand the real history of the mafia

Sure, you can buy plenty of Godfather merchandise when you get to Sicily, but you will have a deeper appreciation of the reality of the island’s mafia history if you take the time to understand it as a tragic story, not one to be idealized.

In Palermo, there is a free museum at the No Mafia Memorial , which details the history of organized crime in Sicily and tells the story of Falcone and Borsellino, two heroic judges who were assassinated during the mafia wars of the 1990s. In Corleone – not actually where the movie was filmed – you can also visit CIDMA , a documentation and education center that dives deeper into the saga of the Maxi Trial, a three-year criminal trial that convicted over 300 people involved in organized crime.

A close up of Sicilian granita ice creatm with a brioche bun blurred in front

5. Italy’s dining dogmas still apply, but one popular breakfast will surprise you

If this isn’t your first time in Italy, you probably already know where Italians stand when it comes to pineapple on pizza, cappuccinos after lunch and chicken in pasta – they will not hear of it. Sicily follows these same rules, but one tradition is likely to delight your inner child: ice cream for breakfast. Italian breakfasts are always sweet, but Sicilians take it to the next level by enjoying either gelato or granita, a type of shaved ice, sandwiched between a fluffy brioche bun first thing in the morning.

6. Sicily’s multicultural history makes it a unique destination

Separated from the mainland by the Strait of Messina, this region of southern Italy has its own cultural identity thanks to its long history of being conquered and influenced by rulers from all over the world. Each culture, from the Greeks and Romans to the Arabs and Crown of Aragon, left its mark in some way. These influences can be found in food – like Sicily's love of couscous – and urban planning and architecture. Whether you’re walking in a city with ancient Greek foundations like Ortigia or delighting in the Baroque streets of Noto , you’ll feel the difference in style but an overall ambiance that is still distinctly Sicilian.

GettyImages-1280430989.jpg

7. You can drink the tap water

Like the rest of Italy, you’ll find many public fountains with free water that is safe to drink unless otherwise marked as “non-potable.” Unless you're advised otherwise, tap water in Sicily is good to drink, but you will find many locals prefer the taste of bottled water. Like elsewhere in Italy and Europe, if you ask for water at a restaurant, they will bring you a bottle and charge you for it. However, if you order an espresso at a cafe bar, it usually comes with a small cup of water on the side to cleanse your palette before you sip.

8. Sicily is the frontier of Europe’s migrant crisis

Ever the crossroads of the Mediterranean, Sicily is one of the main arrival points for refugees seeking asylum in Europe. This is a particularly large issue for the distant Italian island of Lampedusa , which is closer to the coast of Africa than it is to Sicily. The high number of arrivals has at times overwhelmed select areas of Sicily, but in my experience, the effect on the tourism industry has been minimal. Still, it’s wise to educate yourself about these current events before you arrive.

We were drawn to Sicily's viral $1 homes. We ended up spending $30K for 2, but it was worth every penny.

  • Tam and Gary Holm were drawn to Sicily by the one-euro home promotion.
  • Auctions for the homes started at one euro, but the couple ended up spending a lot more.
  • They told BI they fell in love with Sicily, leading them to buy two properties.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on an interview with Tam and Gary Holm, a Californian couple who bought homes in Sambuca di Sicilia, Italy.

It's been edited for length and clarity, and timed to be released with a YouTube documentary.

Tam: I remember reading an article online in 2019 about the one-euro homes when Gary worked in England, much closer to Sicily than our hometown, Los Angeles.

I wrote to the email address provided in the article and got a response from the actual mayor of Sambuca di Sicilia. He said there were tours of the town and the houses they were selling for one euro ($1.08).

Gary: She did the tour and saw the properties, but we definitely had some doubts, like, 'Are they really selling these houses for one euro?.'

It turned out that the auctions started at a euro. We ended up bidding €5,000 for one and lost.

But we knew this town was special. I instantly fell in love. So, instead, we opted for a private sale.

We looked at maybe 10 or 15 houses, and the one we went with was special.

Tam: If you were lucky enough to get one of the one-euro houses, they did most of the paperwork for you, but there were some stipulations. You had a time limit to renovate it, had to use certain contractors, and there was a lot of guidance.

I'm glad we weren't stuck with that. However, it meant we had to figure it out all alone.

It's not like the American real-estate market.

Tam: We'd bought a couple of houses in America before, and it's a little bit different in Italy.

Gary: The way they do real estate in Italy involves getting a notaio, or a notary, essentially a lawyer who draws up a legal contract with the owner.

Tam: The ownership goes by lineage, which requires the people listed on the deed to be present with the new people wanting to buy the property.

So, in our situation, a brother and a sister were listed. While the sister was here in Sambuca, the brother lived in America and hadn't been here for a decade.

So, we had to figure out to get him to Sambuca to sign the paperwork so we could buy his house.

Gary: There was a convoluted way we could have gotten him to an embassy in Washington, DC, but it would have been a whole thing.

Luckily, it turned out that he had wanted to visit his family, and the timing, thankfully, worked out. So we were able to all be here and sign at the same time.

Tam: Meeting a guy who hadn't been home in 10 years was super fun. We all hopped in cars together to Palermo, the next biggest city, to meet with a bilingual notaio.

Gary : The family has essentially adopted us now. They were selling their mother's home that they didn't live in; it hadn't been lived in for 20 years.

Now, every time we go to Sambuca, we have dinner with them. They're part of our family here now.

Unexpected costs

Tam: Our initial investment on the house was €19,000 ($20,581). We went in thinking we would just need to paint it nicely.

Gary: But it needed plumbing, some electrical work, etc. Then, we realized that the place right next door had just gone up for sale.

There is no land, and it's a house that shares three walls with other houses, so the only way to make the place bigger would be with one of the adjacent houses.

Tam: So, of course, we had to buy it. Then, we had to find those owners, fly back out here, and once again drive to Palermo.

Gary: That one cost us €8,000 ($8,666), so for the two we purchased, we spent €27,000 ($29,247).

It's not a ton of money, but it's not a euro or two euros.

Tam: Purchasing a property is a little different from American real estate because, instead of it being a percentage-based commission that the real-estate agent takes, they have a flat-rate fee for the notaio.

We had to do that twice — a big expense we weren't expecting.

Gary: Another big expense was that we thought we could just put a hole in the wall between the two houses.

But it turned out that one had a lower floor than the other, so the engineering side cost a lot of money.

Our whole costings were around $160,000 ($173,296).

Falling in love with Sicily

Gary: I think one of the things I fell in love with during all this was the people of Sambuca. Everyone has been super welcoming and friendly, and it's a small town that feels very international.

Tam: There are also people who have lived here for generations and generations, who are so nice, cool, and ready to make friends with people from around the world.

Gary: Everyone we have talked to in this town has had a great experience, so I think it tells you something about the people. They see the value in outsiders boosting the economy and tourism.

I think that the one-euro program was brilliant, in my opinion, because it gave some people a chance to get houses for very little money, and it brought us here.

You get to live this sort of dream; who doesn't want to have a house in Italy?

Tam: Before coming to Sambuca for the program, I'd never been to Sicily, and we knew nothing about Sicily . Absolutely nothing.

And it is so awesome. I'm kind of sad the secret is out.
