Campbell House in Spokane, WA: Historic mansion & museum tour

Ever wonder what it’d feel like to be a millionaire at the turn of the 20th century? Well you can get a pretty good sense of that in the Campbell House in Spokane, Washington, the gorgeously preserved historic mansion in this Eastern WA city. This home is on the registry of National Historic Places—and it’s part of a museum, so you can get up close and personal with all the turn of the century artifacts!

Things to do in Spokane: Tour the historic Campbell House in Browne's Addition, where you can see preserved rooms of the 20th century elite. To & Fro Fam

The Campbell House mansion was built for a silver baron and his family in 1898. You probably can’t afford to have five live-in servants and deck out your tea room in silk and velvet (I know I definitely can’t!), but you can see how the Campbells did just that in this National Historic home.

Luckily for us non-millionaires, the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture (MAC) preserved the Campbell House in Spokane and opened it up for tours.

So if you’re looking for off the beaten path things to do in Spokane, WA, visit the Campbell House. (Just brush up on your silver baron poses and finishing school manners first!)

Quick history of the Campbell House

The Campbell House in Spokane was built in 1898 for Ohio-born Amasa Campbell, a high school dropout who made his fortune in mining. He hired the architect Kirtland Cutter to build the 13,000-square-foot home for just $30,000, where he lived with his wife, Grace, and daughter, Helen.

The house reflects the traditions of the time’s high social class. One of the mansion’s most stunning spots, the gold-and-pink reception room, was built entirely for Mrs. Campbell to receive visitors in 15-minute time slots. And the game room downstairs—like a 20th century millionaire’s man cave—was the only spot where Mr. Campbell was allowed to gamble and drink, given that his wife was involved in the Temperance movement.

Ultimate man cave! This historic museum in Spokane, Washington preserved the 1898 mansion and opened it to tours. To & Fro Fam

Helen donated the family home to a local historical society in 1924 when she moved to the other side of the Spokane River, where it had become more fashionable to live. The MAC refurbished the home in the 1980s and 1990s, using historic photos and other records to recreate or buy similar furniture, fixtures and even wallpaper.

Tour the Campbell House in Spokane

The Campbell House is next door to the MAC and entry is included when you pay to enter the main museum. That said, you need to take a tour to visit the mansion, and tours are offered on the hour in the afternoons Tuesday through Friday and Sunday. (See full details below.)

My sister and I visited the MAC one recent afternoon not even intending to go into the Campbell House. The folks at the front desk mentioned the tour to us, though, and I’m so glad we took them up on it!

Campbell Carriage House: Part of the Northwest Museum of Art and Culture in Spokane, WA, this National Registry of Historic Places mansion is open to tours. To & Fro Fam

The Campbell House tour begins in the Campbell Carriage House, which formerly held the family’s carriage and, later, an electric automobile. (!!) Our tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable, answered our many questions and made me laugh throughout the 45-minute tour.

One of the more fascinating parts of the Campbell House tour: the contrast between the family side and the servant side of the house.

The opulent tea room in the Campbell House, a historic mansion in Spokane Washington, is part of the tour from the Museum of Arts and Culture in Spokane. If you like history and architecture, you must visit this mansion. To & Fro Fam

Anyone who has watched Downton Abbey understands the concept of the upstairs/downstairs divide. It’s another thing to see that difference firsthand.

The family’s quarters were opulent, breathtaking. Rooms were full of souvenirs from their travels in Europe, expensive furnishings and enough cut crystal to make the whole house sparkle. (Also, is anyone else as obsessed with wallpaper as I am? I felt like such a weirdo oohing and ahhing over the wallpaper in every room!)

Historic poppy wallpaper in the National Registry of Historic Places mansion, Campbell House, in Spokane WA. To & Fro Fam

In contrast, the servant side of Campbell House was more practical and obviously designed to prioritize the family’s comfort. For example, the very layout of the house enabled servants to clean and take care of the guest bathroom—without using the main hallway or even being seen.

The servants' work room shows it was hard work caring for a rich family in the 1890s! Campbell House tour in Spokane, WA. To & Fro Fam

That said, the Campbells seemed fairly kind to the servants. They installed a modern bathroom in the basement so servants wouldn’t have to walk up three flights of stairs to use the facilities, and Mrs. Campbell sometimes acted as chaperone when one of the younger servants had a date!

March of modern times in 1920s Spokane

I didn’t know a lot about Spokane history. But as always, I find I absorb so much more when history is linked to personal stories (like those of the people who lived in the Tenement Museum in New York ). Thanks to the Campbell House tour, I learned a ton about Spokane in the early 20th century.

The Campbells built and outfitted their home at a dynamic point in U.S. history. Workers were striking, demanding better pay and conditions. Women agitated for the right to vote. Prohibition outlawed alcohol.

Unique things to do in Spokane, WA: Tour the Campbell House in historic Browne's Addition. You don't have to be a history or architecture fan to appreciate this mansion-turned-museum. To & Fro Fam

On the Campbell House tour, we witnessed how these cultural changes played out in upper class families. For example, in the Campbells’ daughter’s room, a golf trophy was displayed. Competitive and athletic, young Helen was no prim and proper wallflower!

The Campbell House was also outfitted for modern technologies like electricity and the telephone. Mr. Campbell had private phone lines installed so he could call his business partner and lawyer in the houses next door so he could talk without the risk of a nosy operator listening in!)

Spokane history at the Campbell House

I’m thrilled my sister and I toured the Campbell House in Spokane. I don’t know much about architecture and am not a history buff, but I still absolutely enjoyed this unique thing to do in Spokane.

My sister has lived in Spokane for almost 10 years altogether and had never visited the Campbell House. (See, it’s a hidden gem even for Spokane residents!) I’m so glad we finally explored this gorgeous historic home in Spokane.

Question: How do you find hidden gems when you travel?

Fun things to do in Spokane, WA: Tour the historic Campbell House Museum. This is a great hidden gem only locals know about—perfect for fans of history, architecture and beautiful homes! To & Fro Fam

What a cool house! I love that massive stove so much! Would love to check this out next time we’re in the area!

' src=

I know, I couldn’t believe that gorgeous stove! Would you believe it weighs 6 TONS?!

' src=

What a great find! How fun that it was your sister’s first time there, too. I’ll have to remember this tour the next time I’m in the area!

Oh totally! Touring the Campbell House turned out to be a great activity in Spokane for both of us.

' src=

This is great! I had never heard of the Campell House before, I’ll have to go!

I love finding off the beaten path things to do – especially since they’re never crowded!

' src=

What an interesting place. Kinda looks a little spooky!

Funny you say that: There are some rumors of it being haunted, but I don’t think they’re very reliable rumors. 😉

' src=

Wow, what a beautiful and historic home! I would love to have a chance to see this in person, I am love walking through older homes and seeing the charm and details.

I do too, Emily! Those old houses put so much thought into every detail.

' src=

Nice place,I would really love to visit this in person. Historic places has always been my thing.

I love getting to experience history, rather than simply read about it, in historic places like the Campbell House. You’d love it, Stella.

' src=

I really want to go back to WA to explore sometime (hopefully sooner rather than later!)! I’ve never heard of the Campbell House Museum but these photos are gorgeous! :] I’ll have to check it out next time!

I’d never heard of it either – we stumbled onto it! That’s one of the lovely thing about travel is that there’s always something unexpected around the corner.

' src=

That wallpaper is gorgeous. Is it weird that I wish I had a skirt in that print??

When you make that skirt will you send me one too?!

' src=

What an interesting historic home. I love that they recreated the furnishings, it certainly looks very luxurious inside! I think I would do the tour also for the maximum information and historical context

Yes they did an impressive job of recreating the interiors, since much of the original pieces had been sold away. What an effort!

' src=

I love old and charming places like this! Your photos and writing are beautiful!

Thank you Emma! It was such a lovely tour.

' src=

What a gorgeous house to step back in time & see how others lived! What a great house to explore

I do love tours like the one at the Campbell House because they show history in a totally new light. It’s completely different than reading about history in a book!

' src=

What a cool place to visit! I like the stonework on the buildings!

Isn’t it gorgeous? The level of detail in these historic homes is impressive.

2022 Fall Festival of Homes

My project-1

It’s back! The Fall Festival of Homes presents Spokane’s finest residential design.

Now in its 18th year, the Fall Festival of Homes has featured nearly 500 homes. It is the largest new–home construction showcase in the Inland Northwest.

The Spokane Home Builders Association and Fred’s Appliance are proud to present the 18th Annual Fall Festival of Homes with 16 gorgeous homes from 10 of Spokane’s finest builders.

This year, the festival will be held over two weekends, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 23‒25 and Sept. 30‒Oct. 2. Each Friday night will feature a special Ladies Night with tour homes decked out in boutique shopping opportunities from local artisan businesses.

At this free and highly anticipated event, builders showcase the region’s most cutting-edge, top-quality design in Prairie, Farmhouse, Contemporary styles and more at newly-constructed homes located across the Spokane area. Featured homes present bold architecture, captivating floor plans, and are showcases of expert interior design.

“Each year we carefully select–and keep secret–the homes on the tour to provide a unique and dramatic experience for the Spokane community,” said Joel White, executive officer of Spokane Home Builders Association. “Our goal is to ensure there’s literally something for everyone to enjoy in these gorgeous showcase homes.”

In addition to inspirational designs, the tour also provides access to SHBA member builders and subcontractors. SHBA builder members are award-winning professionals who take pride in quality construction and exceptional craftsmanship.

The building industry of today is rapidly changing with a greater emphasis on sustainability, technology and energy efficiency. Tour goers have a front row seat to these latest innovations and the chance to speak directly with the experts on the tour.

While these builders and subcontractors are showcasing the best-of-the-best that the market has to offer, these quality builders are representative of the entire building industry in the Spokane area, which is under great pressure to generate housing supply while also answering the need to offer attainable homeownership to community members.

“Community members often overlook the role of home builders in building a strong economy for everyone in our region,” said White. “We love the Fall Festival of Homes because it’s a chance for us to be more visible and help the community understand that our industry spurs thousands of well-paying jobs, and produces homes that are critical to

the stability of our community.”

HOW TO TOUR

Begin the free Fall Festival of Homes Tour at one of three amazing host sites sponsored by Greenstone, Toll Brothers, and Camden Homes Inc. The host sites are located in up-and-coming neighborhoods featuring a mix of single family homes and townhomes combined with stunning outdoor living spaces.

The app provides a list of all of the homes, TourFactory home tours and hands-free, turn-by-turn directions. Be aware: the SHBA Fall Festival of Homes app maps homes using GPS coordinates since many of the homes are not yet listed on Google Maps.

For those who are unable to attend the event in-person, 3D virtual tours of each home will also be provided at www.fallfestivalofhomes.com . On the site guests can learn about builders, discover modern floor plans, research smart home technology trends, and view interior design ideas all from the comfort of their own home.

The highly guarded Fall Festival of Homes Tour map will become available on Friday morning, September 23rd.

LADIES NIGHT OUT

On the first and second Friday of Fall Festival of Homes, SHBA is hosting the second annual Ladies Night Out! Experience an evening of hors d'oeuvres, drinks, and interior design.

The night will begin at Fred’s Appliance for a quick tour of the design center. Guests will then load a charter bus and head out for a private tour of one of two fully-staged Fall Festival of Homes show homes.

The night is a Pinterest board come to life!

The cost is $39.50 per ticket or $70 for two. Visit fallfestivalofhomes.com to sign up.

ARCHITECTURAL STYLES ON THE TOUR

This year’s featured homes include popular architectural styles.

Modern and contemporary styles are similar but modern architecture prioritizes function over all else. Key design elements include open living spaces, connected outdoor spaces and clean, geometric lines.

Contemporary

Contemporary styles prioritize energy efficiency and sustainable materials while connecting the indoors and outdoors. Natural lighting is emphasized throughout the home.

Also known as bungalow style homes, craftsman style homes showcase natural materials like brick, stone and wood. Wide front porches, open floor plans, large fireplaces and exposed beams are common in these classic, beloved designs.

Contemporary Farmhouse

Originally built on rural lands and modeled after Victorian and Colonial style houses, farmhouses were one-story, rectangular structures made of local materials. Contemporary farmhouses are often two floors and feature clapboard, exterior siding, beadboard backsplashes and large front porches.

This style of design is known as the first distinctly American architectural style, developed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the early 1900s. Experiencing a resurgence of popularity in recent years, spaces are intended to be functional, flowing, and open. Handmade designs and simple, natural woodward are hallmarks of the style.

John A. Finch Mansion

Browne's addition tour.

The Finch mansion is a private residence. Please observe the residences privacy by remaining on the sidewalk as you examine this historic home.

The Finch mansion was designed and built by renowned architect Kirtland Cutter in1898. The home was designed in a Georgian Revival style. One of the most notable features of the Finch mansion is the four, 3-foot diameter, Ionic columns, which span two stories in the front of the home. The home originally had two wings, which were five-sided bays with fireplace alcoves. As the home was converted from a single-family residence into apartments, the North and south wings were expanded.

John Aylard Finch was born in England in 1852. At the age of 5 his mother, Sophia, and father, William, took the family across the Atlantic to the United States of America. Once in America the finch family settled in Cleveland, Ohio where at age eight John began his schooling. Finch finished school at the age of 13 to work in the iron and steel industry. Finch moved many times following his ambition from Montreal, Canada then to Chicago, Illinois. Later he began to move west and headed out to Denver and eventually to Leadville, Colorado where he began working with mining. In 1887 Finch moved from Colorado to Washington Territory in pursuit of gold and other precious metals, he was traveling west with a friend, Amasa B. Campbell.

Campbell and Finch became strong business associates and formed the mining firm, Finch & Campbell. Finch & Campbell began their inland northwest mining empire by purchasing the Gem mine in the Coeur d'Alene district. After making a great profit with the Gem Mine they developed the Standard mine in 1891, then the Hecla mine shortly thereafter. The Standard and Hecla mines paid huge dividends, Campbell became president of both mines, while Finch was the accountant and secretary. As their mining prowess grew so did their territory as they opened up the Enterprise and Standard mines in British Columbia, Canada.

Finch was not content to maintain in mines his entire career. As he became more successful he began to diversify his investments. Mr. Finch became president of the White & Bender Company, the Coeur d'Alene Hardware Company, Blalock Fruit Company of Walla Walla and the National Lumber & Box Company of Hoquiam. Finch maintained his connection with his business partner throughout these ventures, naming Mr. Campbell vice president to all of these further business ventures. When the Davenport Hotel Company was being formed it was no surprise that Finch was a heavy stockholder.

Finch was a civic leader, donating time and money to many organizations that were not related to business, such as sitting on the Board of Overseers for Whitman College, located in Walla Walla Washington at the time. For further information on Finch's civic life please listen to the podcast provided in this stop.

Managing the Finch house was a huge undertaking, the 1910 Federal U.S. Census showed Finch living at this house with his wife, Charlotte and three servants. John A. Finch died at his country home at Hayden Lake, Idaho on June 20th, 1915. Charlotte continued to live in the mansion until 1927.

‘Bachelorette’ star Katie Thurston returns to home state as part of comedy tour

Katie Thurston attends the OnlyFans Roast of Bert Kreischer on OFTV at Sunset at the Edition on March 29, 2023, in West Hollywood, Calif.   (Getty Images)

Season 17’s “Bachelorette” Katie Thurston is returning to her home state – not to hand out roses, but to share laughs at comedy clubs in Lynnwood, Tacoma and Spokane next week.

The Lynnwood-raised reality TV star has turned her talents into humor. After living in San Diego upon filming “The Bachelorette,” Thurston moved just a month ago to Los Angeles.

“I love it,” she said. “The comedy scene here is obviously bigger, better and more competitive, which is why I moved here. But also this is, like, entertainment city. This is where I’m supposed to be.”

Thurston’s love of comedy began before she stood in the reality TV spotlight.

“I went on TikTok during the pandemic, because all the comedy clubs were closed,” Thurston said. “I always thought open mic would be really fun to just try it out. This was a way to do that without having to be in the public, because everything was shut down.

“I remember the first time I had a viral moment. It was kind of like, ‘Maybe I have something.’ “

Her first TikTok that took off? “It was about basically being single and lonely during the pandemic and how I would have an intimate relationship with a ghost at this point,” Thurston laughed.

Now, Thurston is just shy of 1 million TikTok followers. Comedy, however, is not the “end all be all” for her, she said.

“I think the bigger picture of what I’m doing is entertaining people,” Thurston said. “I really enjoy having a community of people to make happy and make laugh, which is honestly what I was doing on TikTok before I even went on reality TV. There’s always been this pull to be in front of an audience.”

Thurston’s shows see a different crowd than your average comedy club.

“The first obvious thing is it’s a mostly women crowd,” Thurston said. “There’s definitely men there as well, but what I love is my jokes are obviously based on my womanly experience. So that makes it really relatable for the women in the crowd.”

But there are also a lot of people who are part of the Bachelor Nation, fans of “The Bachelorette” show.

“A lot of these people who come, it is their first time” to a comedy club, Thurston said. “It’s something that feels safe to them, of like, they’ve never gone to a comedy show, but at least there’s a familiar face that entices them. And then they realize, like, live entertainment, live comedy is enjoyable.”

Thurston likes to joke in her sets about what’s relevant in her life.

“For me, mostly, it’s just what it’s like to be single in your 30s, and what it’s like to be a woman in your 30s without kids,” Thurston said. “Kind of the expectations around that. The ideas that people have and what that’s supposed to mean.”

While Bachelor Nation fans may be hoping to get some piping hot tea on “Bachelor” and “Bachelorette” insider information, Thurston won’t talk too much on her reality TV experience.

“But I do make a joke how it’s very funny that I was once on this million-dollar TV show looking for love, and now I’m on the free version of Hinge (dating app),” Thurston said.

While she started as a contestant on Matt James’ season of “The Bachelor” and went on to become “The Bachelorette” herself, Thurston has made more appearances on a recent season, including sharing her comedy talents. Last year, she headed to Mexico to host a “Bachelor in Paradise” comedy roast, which ended in drama and hurt feelings for some of the contestants.

“You know, I’ve learned with Bachelor Nation to tread lightly when it comes to roasts,” Thurston said. “It doesn’t always go as planned. Sometimes there’s a fine line from funny and mean. I learn to just stay in my lane and hope to not do that again.”

So will Thurston be roasting her home state or home town as part of her national tour?

“A lot of the jokes when it comes to hometown stuff, they’re not preplanned. I think that’s what makes live comedy so fun, is you don’t really know what to expect until you start engaging with the crowd,” Thurston said. “Given that (Lynnwood is) my hometown, I’m sure there will be a lot to talk about when it comes to Washington.”

It won’t be Thurston’s first time in Spokane. The Lynnwood High School graduate used to travel to the East Side for volleyball tournaments.

“I did shows last year at the Tacoma Comedy Club, and it sold out,” Thurston said. “I’m hoping for that again this year. Just because it’s the home crowd.

“Washington, as a whole, is a little more progressive. So some of the jokes are more understandable for them, versus middle America, it might be a weird topic to talk about.”

While Thurston is fairly new to comedy, the comedians she is bringing along on tour are not.

“I’m bringing these other comedians who have helped me along the way, who are more experienced, who maybe I can learn from who can teach me stuff each show,” Thurston said.

For those who are opposed to reality TV, Thurston said there will be a diverse group of comedians and opinions to “guarantee a fun time no matter who you are or how old you are.”

“What I want people to know is when they come to the show, they’re getting not just Katie the ‘Bachelorette,’ but they’re getting Katie ‘Me,’ ” she said.

Some tickets ($25-$50) are still available for the 7 p.m. Wednesday show at Spokane Comedy Club.

“Everyone on TV sees this proper, poised, like, following the rules of what you need to fall in love, you know,” Thurston said. “I’m not that. I’m messy, I’m fun, I’m relatable. I’m your sister. I’m your friend.

“A lot of people romanticize what a ‘Bachelorette’ is, and they put me on this pedestal, which is very sweet, but I’m not deserving of a pedestal. I’m like right there with you, you know, suffering on the dating apps with you. Talking about the fails of a bad date. Really wanting you to feel like we’re friends.”

Equal Housing Opportunity

Thursday, May 4 — Spokane, Washington

Today began with…a bus ride! We left for Spokane at a very civilized hour, after spending the night in the same city as our concert! That’s the only time that will happen on this tour. But any inconvenience of tour is more than made up for with the great company on the bus, and the glorious singing every night.

Once we arrived in Spokane, we were dropped at a place where there were many places to eat. We scattered, ate, and gathered again to drive to the Gonzaga University campus. The Myrtle Woldson Performing Arts Center is new and beautiful–the grounds were full of students enjoying the perfect spring weather.

After meeting Dr. Meg Stohlmann, who conducts the choirs at the university, we had a quick tour of the building and then went back outside for a couple of group shots. Dr. Stohlmann and her students have been very welcoming and gracious to us.

Spokane-group-photos-1024x576.jpeg

After a little free time (many Singers listened to a rehearsal) we then had the opportunity to meet the Concert Choir, with whom Singers rehearsed two pieces for the performance in the evening.

After BYU Singers concluded, both choir combined to sing two numbers. The audience responded very enthusiastically to the choirs individually and together; it was a beautiful evening. And there were new friendships that came out of our time together.
