The 25 Best Zoos in The Netherlands (Suggested By Locals)

Photo of author

It is challenging for foreigners to decide which zoo in The Netherlands to visit because there are many Dutch zoos. I have lived in the Netherlands my entire life and visited many Dutch zoos with my family.

Discover the best zoo in The Netherlands

I also interviewed dozens of fellow Dutchmen about their favorite zoos and reviewed the 25 best zoos in The Netherlands.

Best Zoo In The Netherlands

I prepared a brief review of each zoo to help you decide if a particular zoo will be fun for your family. I also added the price of admissions for each zoo in 2023.

ARTIS Amsterdam Royal Zoo is Amsterdam’s most popular tourist attraction

1. ARTIS Amsterdam

In the center of Amsterdam lies ARTIS Amsterdam Royal Zoo, one of the oldest and biggest Dutch zoos.   ARTIS Amsterdam has over 900 animal species, so you will have enough animals to watch.

ARTIS Amsterdam Royal Zoo is Amsterdam’s most popular tourist attraction with more than 1 million visitors annually. That should assure you that taking your family to Artis will be fun.

We needed 3-4 hours to see everything in ARTIS when we were there with two children. Without children, it would take 2-3 hours to see the whole of ARTIS.

2. Apenheul In Apeldoorn

Apenheul is the best day out between monkeys and a zoo where you can walk in between the (smaller) monkeys. That is fun, and it is no surprise that Apenheul is a top-rated attraction in The Netherlands.

It will be an unforgettable experience for the children (and the parents). Don’t worry about safety because the bigger monkeys cannot walk around freely. I revisited Apenheul last year and loved it. Super interesting!

3. Aqua Zoo Leeuwarden In Leeuwarden

Aqua Zoo Leeuwarden is a zoo in Leeuwarden that focuses on animals that live in or near water.   These days they have a broader focus and a wider variety of animals.

They have also extended their playground facilities because they have understood that a combination of watching rare animals with a (large) playground is a beautiful combination for families with younger children.

The fact that the number of visitors has doubled over the last five years shows that Aqua Zoo Leeuwarden has become an attractive family day.

Address:  De Groene Ster 2, 8926 XE Leeuwarden

4. Blijdorp, The Most Popular Zoo in the Netherlands.

Blijdorp in Rotterdam is the most popular zoo in the Netherlands, with more than 1,5 mln visitors/year.

I described Blijdorp in  another post  as one of the top attractions of Rotterdam. You should read that post to learn more about Blijdorp and other attractions in Rotterdam that may be fun for your family.

5. Burgers’ Zoo, The Zoo Of Arnhem

Burgers’ Zoo is located in Arnhem and Burgers’ Zoo is the second-largest zoo in The Netherlands. Last year, I visited Burgers’ Zoo and was impressed by the zoo’s size and design.

The most impressive and truly unique thing in this zoo is the largest  Butterfly Hall  in Europe. That is quite an experience.

The park consists of several parts, the Safari part, the Bush part, the Dessert part, and a Sea part. Burgers’ zoo is a beautiful modern zoo.

Address:  Antoon van Hooffplein 1, 6816 SH Arnhem

Ticket prices : You can get a € 1 discount per ticket if you  order your tickets online .

6. Amersfoort Zoo in Amersfoort

Amersfoort Zoo distinguishes itself by allowing you to watch the animals from above and below. That is a rather original setup, and the kids will love it. Another innovative concept is the DinoPark, with models of dinosaurs at their original size.

The house for animals active during the night is also an original idea. This zoo also has plenty of playgrounds for younger children.

Amersfoort Zoo is an excellent innovative zoo.

7. Dierenrijk In Eindhoven

The zoo in Eindhoven is a charming midsize zoo in a green environment with plenty of possibilities for younger children to play in the playgrounds.

8. Dolfinarium In Harderwijk

Address:  Zuiderzeeboulevard 22, 3841 WB Harderwijk

Dolfinarium is a household name in the Netherlands and one of the most popular attractions in the country. I highly recommend the shows where dolphins perform all kinds of tricks.

Recently, an outdoor water park with lots of slides has been built to show your skills in the water. Please, check in advance if the water park is open because it is an outdoor water park and will not be open all year round.

9. GaiaZOO In Kerkrade

Gaiazoo has been selected four times by the public as” the most beautiful zoo in the Netherlands,”  and that should tell you enough. This zoo has existed relatively briefly (15 years), and the facilities are new and very modern.

GaiaZOO is an excellent choice if you stay in the southern part of The Netherlands or come from Germany or Belgium. GaiaZOO is one of the most exciting zoos in The Netherlands and is worth considering a day out with your family.

Ouwehands Dierenpark has much more to offer than just these Chinese pandas

10. Ouwehands Dierenpark In Rhenen

Ouwehands Dierenpark is one of the midsize zoos in the Netherlands with a rich history. Ouwehands Dierenpark uses its Chinese giant panda couple to distinguish itself from other zoos and has built an entire Chinese concept around these pandas.

However, Ouwehands Dierenpark has much more to offer than just these Chinese pandas, and a lot of their offering is also indoors, which is not bad given the climate in The Netherlands.

11. Safaripark Beekse Bergen in Beekse Bergen

Safaripark Beekse Bergen is one of the most special zoos in the Netherlands because animals do not live in cages but walk around freely. But don’t worry; it is safe if you abide by the park’s rules.

Safaripark Beekse Bergen is by far the largest zoo in The Netherlands. It is so big that you can take a boat to the other side of the park or drive around in your car to watch the animals from nearby, making Safaripark Beekse Bergen a unique zoo in The Netherlands.

You can even sleep between the animals because the safari park has a resort in the middle of the Zoo. I love the cottages between the treetops in particular.

Safaripark Beekse Bergen and its resort offer a unique experience.

You can find more information and purchase online tickets with a discount on its website .

Wildlands is a zoo located in Emmen.  Wildlands is the largest zoo in the north of the Netherlands.

The zoo has recently moved to a new area outside the city center, becoming a vast zoo. The zoo is separated into four parts (of the world) to let you take a tour around the world.

Address:  Raadhuisplein 99, 7811 AP Emmen

15. Berkenhof Tropical Zoo

Berkenhof Tropical Zoo is an award-winning midsize zoo located in Zeeland.

Berkenhof is ideally situated for those visiting the beaches in Zeeland and looking for an alternative to the beach when the weather may not be as lovely.

Berkenhof Tropical Zoo is, not surprisingly, focused on tropical animals. They also have a fossil mine, where mammoths and saber-toothed tigers can be seen.

Finally, they have a dinosaur exhibition, where you can see models of several dinosaurs.

BestZOO is a small cozy zoo located in Best. BestZOO prides itself on two rare animal species, the tamanduas and the wallaroos, found nowhere else in The Netherlands.

18. DoeZoo in Leens

Address:  Wierde 17, 9965 TA Leens

The Doezoo is built on the idea that you should “ do ” something in a zoo rather than watch animals. Therefore, the tours are highly appreciated, and visitors can touch the animals (if they dare to do this). There is also a petting zoo and a playground for the younger children. Add a reasonable price to this, and the entire family can have a lovely afternoon with the kids in this zoo.

19. Eekhoorn Experience in Etten-Leur

The Eekhoorn Express is attractive because the cost of admission is precisely € 0, and parking is also free.

Ticket prices : Tickets = € 0

20. Plaswijckpark In Rotterdam

We described Plaswijkparck in another post and suggest you read the  other post  to obtain more information about Plaswijkparck.

I like Plaswijckpark because it combines a zoo with a playground/attraction park.

That perfect combination makes Plaswijkparck an attractive destination for a family trip.

Address:  Ringdijk 20, 3053 KS Rotterdam

21. Reptile House in Breda

The Reptile House in Breda is a zoo dedicated to reptiles. There are many reptiles (snakes, lizards, crocodiles), amphibians (frogs, toads, salamanders), and arthropods (spiders and scorpions).

Beekse Bergen | Safari in the Netherlands

zoo safari nederland

Safari in the Netherlands, is that even possible? Well, the answer is yes! In the South of the Netherlands, in Tilburg, Safari Park Beekse Bergen opened its doors back in 1968 and for over 50 years it attracts visitors who are after a safari experience close to home.

In 2018 it opened the Safari Resort, adding a new and unique dimension to the Safari Park. It makes it possible to stay overnight, right in the heart of the savannah. You are surrounded by wild animals and amazing nature.

Beekse Bergen Safari resort 8

Traveltomtom was invited to experience this Safari Resort and experience these safari vibes in the Netherlands. Traveltomtom team member and travel writer Ashley traveled to Tilburg with four nieces and nephews to fully experience the Beekse Bergen.

About Safari Resort Beekse Bergen

Beekse Bergen Safari resort 5

Looking for a unique safari experience, but Africa is still a step too far? Safari Resort Beekse Bergen in the Netherlands got you covered. You will spend the night in the heart of the savannah, literally surrounded by wild animals. You fall asleep and wake up among the animals and with the most beautiful views over the savannah.

Beekse Bergen Safari resort 6

The resort is very easily accessible as it is located close to the A58 highway and right next to the N269 provincial road. The resort is signposted very well as soon as you get off the highway, so you can’t miss it!

Beekse Bergen Safari resort lodge 410 1

Checking in was really easy as all lodges have a combination lock at the front door. You get the code to this lock one day before your arrival, so you can go straight to your lodge without having to stop at the guest service. No keys or cards to open your lodge, so no keys or cards can be lost! Really clever.

On arrival the gates to the park open automatically based on license plate. However, Beekse Bergen is a car-free park, which means you can park your car near your lodge for loading and unloading, but you’re asked to park your car at one of the bigger car parks located throughout the park.

Beekse Bergen Safari Resort Bahari Beach seals 1

Beekse Bergen is a large resort with 239 lodges that differ in type, size, facilities and theme. The lodges are located around the Masai Mara and Serengeti savannahs, Simbara West and Simbara East, where the lions can be found and Bahari Beach, home of the seals.

We were given Savannah Lodge 410, located at the Masai Mara Savannah. We arrived quite late at night, so we had to wait to the next morning to see what our views would be like and what animals we would see.

Beekse Bergen Safari Resort Savanne Lodge living room 1

Checking in to our lodge was like checking in to a five star hotel room, but then lodge style. We had a huge lodge with absolutely everything we needed. It has three bedrooms for a total of 6 people. One of the bedrooms has an ensuite bathroom with (rain) shower and sink.

Then there’s also a large bathroom with double sink, toilet, bathtub, (rain) shower and sauna. Yes, the lodge just has a sauna, how cool is that!

There is also a separate second toilet. Then there is the living room and kitchen area, with a television and large and comfy sofa and chairs and a large dining table with 6 chairs.

Karibu Town

Beekse Bergen Safari resort Karibu Town

Karibu Town is the lively and vibrant heart of the Safari Resort. Here you will find here everything you need for a perfect stay. It’s never boring in Karibu Town! Let me list all the available facilities.

Ranger Basecamp

Ranger Basecamp is located within Karibu Town. Throughout the day they offer a range of activities and entertainment. Our niece really enjoyed the mini disco and puppet theatre. They will keep the kids busy all day! The kids can even earn a real Ranger Badge at the end of their stay. You can find the full entertainment program on the Beekse Bergen App.

Restaurant Moto

Beekse Bergen Safari resort restaurant Moto 1

An open kitchen and a fire place in the middle of the restaurant, no surprise because Moto means ‘fire’ in Swahili. Restaurant Moto is a very atmospheric restaurant with a large terrace also overlooking the Serengeti Savannah. It’s the perfect place for a nice and delicious dinner after a day full of activities and adventures. They’re open from 12.00 – 8.00 pm for lunch and dinner.

Beekse Bergen Safari resort Restaurant Moto 2

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday they also do pizza delivery to your lodge. You can just give them a ring, place your order and request your delivery time. Your pizza’s will be delivered right to your doorstep, hot and ready to eat! You can also order pizza or make a reservation for Restaurant Moto through the Beekse Bergen App.

Maji Springs

Kids and adults, everyone will have a great time at Maji Springs. A heated indoor swimming pool, an adventurous water playground with various play elements, fun for the whole family.

Unfortunately Maji Springs was closed during our stay at the Safari Resort, so we haven’t been able to experience this pool. The pool was closed because they are constructing a new toddler pool and family slide. During the renovation you can use the Etsi Pool swimming pool located at the Lake Resort.

Guest Service & Market

Beekse Bergen Safari Resort Guest Service and Market

Just in case you have any questions or have forgotten something, feel free to make a stop at the Guest Service & Market, also located in Karibu Town. The Guest Service Centre is open all day to answer all of your questions. The market is your place for souvenirs, groceries and fresh sandwiches.

Pamoja Lounge & Bowling

Beekse Bergen Safari Resort Bowling 1

Pamoja Lounge and the bowling alley are located between Restaurant Moto and the Guest Service & Market. Be sure to make a reservation if you want to have some bowling fun. Without a reservation you risk missing out on all the fun.

Breakfast Delivery

Beekse Bergen Safari resort breakfast delivery service

The lodges at the resort all have a fully equipped kitchen, so you can take everything for dinner and breakfast with you and cook it there. But, if you want you can go all luxury with the breakfast delivery service. Before you even wake up, your breakfast has been delivered to your lodge, just take it inside from your terrace.

Just take it in, put it on the table and enjoy your breakfast, pure luxury for sure. We used the breakfast service and it was simply outstanding! We had the breakfast family box and it came with so much! Croissants, currant buns, oven baked white and brown buns, butter, fresh fruits, jam, chocolate paste, cheese, 3 different cold cuts, gingerbread, apple juice, fresh orange juice, so much and so delicious!

You can order this breakfast service through the Guest Service & Market or through the Beekse Bergen App.

Outdoor Terrace

Beekse Bergen Safari resort Ice Skating

Just outside of Karibu Town there is a lovely outdoor terrace with Serengeti views. I can imagine this is the place to be in Summer, with a cold drink and views for hours. There is a fireplace and swing benches, where they roast marshmallows in the winter. In winter you can also find a skating rink there where you can ice skate for free. Just request your size skates and have a good time on the ice, while enjoying the views of giraffes and rhinos.

Add-on packages

The breakfast delivery is one of the many add on packages you can order and use while staying at the Safari Resort, but there is more. What about a bicycle package, a cart package, or maybe you have something to celebrate and want a safari cake or sparkling wine to be delivered. It’s all possible, just check the website or the app.

Beekse Bergen App

Beekse Bergen Safari resort Bahari Beach Seals

I have already mentioned it before in this blog a few times, but the Beekse Bergen has their own app and it is very useful! I mainly used it for entertainment times, to see when the mini disco was about to start. But also to check the lion’s feeding times to make sure we wouldn’t miss out as you can see this only 3 times per week.

The app has all maps of the Safari Park, Safari Resort and also the Lake Resort and Speelland, so there is really no reason to get lost. It has all timings listed per park, feeding times, entertainment times but opening times of pools and restaurants as well. It offers important and helpful information for you throughout your stay, manuals for equipment in your lodge, information on the resort and accommodation and where to go for medical help.

Attractions Pass

When you stay in a lodge or safari tent at the Safari Resort or the Lake Resort you receive a complimentary Attractions Pass. The Attractions Pass gives you plenty of benefits during your stay.

What about 25% discount at Safari Park Beekse Bergen, Speelland, Dierenrijk, Zooparc Overloon, Aviodrome Aviation Theme Park, AquaZoo Leeuwarden and Klimrijk Brabant for a whole year after your stay!?

With the attractions pass you get free and unlimited access to the Safari Park and all the parks mentioned above during your entire stay. We could have visited the park if we wanted to, but there was so much to do in the resort that we didn’t visit the park. We will definitely use the attractions pass on some of the other parks this year!

Beekse Bergen Safari Park Game Drive experience

We also visited the park back in 2020 and had equally amazing experiences at the Beekse Bergen.

This time it was just magical to experience the wildlife from our doorstep. When you can see the wild animals from your living room, it’s the best thing there is!

Lake Resort

Next to the Safari Resort there is also the Lake Resort where you can enjoy the ultimate outdoor life, literally located next to Lake Victoria.

New Safari Hotel at Beekse Bergen

They are actually currently building the Safari Hotel at the Beekse Bergen, we could see a glimpse of what is coming and that looked very promising! The hotel will open its doors in March 2023.

Safari Park Beekse Bergen review

Beekse Bergen Safari resort cottages

It all started with Safari Park Beekse Bergen where you can take a safari through nature and come face-to-face with wild animals on an educational and unique trip through the world of Beekse Bergen. They are open all year round, including public holidays. What makes the Beekse Bergen different from other zoo’s in the Netherlands? Well, it isn’t the standard zoo, it’s all about safari experiences here.

Beekse Bergen Safari Park Game Drive

You can go on a boat safari, car safari, bus safari and a walking safari. You can also do game drives here. The experience with the animals on the car safari or game drive is really next level.

Beekse Bergen Safari with kids

We did the car safari and the game drive with the kids back in 2020 and were both times surrounded by giraffes, when that happened, the kids were screaming of enthusiasm and had the time of their life.

Beekse Bergen Safari resort Lions 1

We had visited the Safari Park before in 2020 and noticed those amazing lodges when we did the car safari. Little did we know that there was such a cool and amazing park there. Three years later we got an invite to come and experience it on behalf of Traveltomtom.

The resort really offers something special. Visiting the Beekse Bergen is cool, but once the park closes you have to leave and go home. If you are staying at the resort you are surrounded by wild animals all day. No matter where you walk at the resort, you always see the animals.

Beekse Bergen Safari resort Masai Mara savanah

The lodges are large and equipped with all comforts and luxury. Spoil yourself with a week or weekend among the wild animals at the Safari Resort. If it were up to us and our nephews and nieces we would have never checked out from the Safari Resort!

Beekse Bergen Safari resort Seal

A massive thank you is in order here for Safari Resort Beekse Bergen for inviting us to and organizing our visit down to the last detail.

Zoos & Animal parks in the Netherlands

Zoos & Animal parks in the Netherlands

The Netherlands has more than 30 zoos or animal parks. Most of these belong to the Dutch Animal Park Association (NVD), and the larger ones are also part of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA). Varying greatly in size, shape and popularity, these institutions can be found all around the Netherlands, both in remote nature areas and in the centres of big Dutch cities .

History of the zoos in the Netherlands

Zoos have existed in the Netherlands since 1838. They were initially showpieces for the elite, but were soon welcoming less rich citizens as well. The status and fame that went with showcasing exotic species by far outweighed the welfare of the animals. Many of the older zoos were originally founded by people with no previous expertise in animal care, and grew from curious private collections to generally accessible attractions .

Dutch zoos today

Today, zoos no longer solely serve the purpose of entertainment. The parks educate visitors on the many animal species that roam our world, and form a platform for pursuing animal rights, preservation and welfare, as well as discussing the boundaries between using and abusing nature.

Animal welfare

Since the 19th and 20th century, Europe became ever more aware of the importance of animal welfare, especially in zoos. Cages were replaced by larger habitats, emulating the animals’ natural surroundings. There is still a lot of moral discussion about zoos, as they do contain animals in captivity, often in and near cities.

Breeding programme

One of the ways zoos try to contribute to animal welfare is with an extensive breeding programme, aimed to keep the numbers up and avoid possible extinction. Many zoos are part of an interconnected network that exchanges possible mates, to diversify the gene pool and the animals’ surroundings. Some of these bred animals can eventually even be released into the wild.

Attractions

Various zoos offer special attractions, such as public feedings, informative exhibitions about the biology, history and habits of the animals, tours, screenings, planetariums, gift shops and even animal performances and shows.

General zoos and animal parks in the Netherlands

General zoos and animal parks have a diverse array of breeds and species from all parts of the world. The air and temperature are artificially changed to emulate the different conditions they are used to.

Artis was founded on May 1, 1838 under the name Natural Artis Magistra (Nature is the Teacher of Art) by a publisher and a watchmaker. It was one of the first public zoos in Europe, and is located right in the centre of Amsterdam .

Artis started out as a park of 4.800 square metres, including a garden with a pond and a small building. It owned a few apes, deer and parrots, and a naturalia cabinet. In 1839 they purchased the menagerie of a carnival patron, consisting of an elephant, lions, a panther, a tiger, a puma, hyenas, polar bears, brown bears, a zebra, llamas, a kangaroo, a gnu, monkeys and a boa constrictor.

The park also received various animals donated by Dutch civilians in the colonies, in exchange for an honorary membership.

Burgers’ Zoo

Burgers' Zoo is located in the forest grounds of Arnhem , Gelderland. Opened in 1913, it is rather modern. They started relatively early with creating natural looking surroundings for the animals. Burgers’ Zoo is divided into seven areas, each simulating specific surroundings such as the ocean, the bush, the desert and the jungle. The many kinds of animals include rhinos, tigers, aardvarks, penguins, sharks, cheetahs and meerkats.

  • Dierenpark Amersfoort

Dierenpark Amersfoort was built in 1948. It consists of various sections, such as the Giants' Quarters, the second biggest indoor animal enclosure in Europe. The zoo also has the biggest bird park in the Netherlands.

Wildlands Adventure Zoo

Wildlands Adventure Zoo is a new kind of theme park that takes the place of the old Animal Park Emmen, mixing adventure with nature and culture. Choose a habitat, such as the junge or the Poles, and explore spacious animal habitats with a focus on keeping their ecosystems as natural as possible. The elephants, for instance, have an outside area of 4.600m2 that includes a river where they can swim.

Wildlands pursues sustainable methods. They have a bridge made of biological materials, and their safari trucks run on reused cooking oils.

Diergaarde Blijdorp

Diergaarde Blijdorp is located in Northwest Rotterdam. It is over 150 years old, and survived the Rotterdam Blitz due to a relocation. Some of the street names recall the zoo's old location. Specialised zoos and animal parks in the Netherlands

Many zoos specialise in a certain kind of animal, like sea-dwelling creatures or birds. Specialisation makes it easier to study, keep and care for specific animals.

In the 60s, Rotterdam Photographer Wim Mager bought two monkeys. When they started to reproduce, Mager quit his job and started Apenheul in Apeldoorn . Rather than put them in cages, a lot of the monkeys roam free in a large, green park where about 500.000 people visit every year.

There are more than 35 kinds of monkeys and apes, including orangutans, gorillas, makis, macaques and tamarins. Scientists visit the park to observe the simians in their relatively free habitat, and a lot of research and information was gained through the park.

Apenheul also has its own charity, ANF, that collects money and works for the preservation of apes and their natural surroundings.

Bird park Avifauna has anything from eagles to ostriches. A few red pandas and monkeys aside, the park is almost fully dedicated to the winged and feathered. Dedicating the park to birds, creatures that generally need quite some room to fly around, enables Avifauna to make sure the creatures have more space to move around freely.

Visitor’s fees are fully spent on obtaining the ideals of the park, like providing optimal care for the birds.

  • Dolfinarium Harderwijk

Dolfinarium Harderwijk is a mix between an animal park and an attraction park. You can admire dolphins, walruses, sea lions, porpoises, seals and fishes, such as sharks. Besides caring for and studying the animals, the park also uses the trained dolphins to give spectacular choreographed shows with 3D water and light effects.

  • Sea Life Scheveningen

Sea Life Scheveningen is a large aquarium, connected to the international Sea Life brand. Located near the beach, this view into the underwater world shows creatures from various seas and freshwater areas. Underwater tunnels and bubble tanks put the visitors right by the fishes. Sea Life works with marine biologists to "breed, rescue and protect" the world’s oceans, creating breeding programmes to help better understand species.

Seal Rehabilitation Centre Pieterburen

Seal Rehabilitation Centre Pieterburen is not an attraction, but a shelter and care facility that rescues local seals that were dangerously affected, usually by human actions. They also research and educate about seals. The crèche doesn’t keep any animals permanently, and rereleases them into the wild as soon as they are healed. Visitors can see the seals, and special activities event let you swim with them, spot them in the wild and help release them.

Wildlife in the Netherlands: a Dutch safari

Lachlan Campbell

Ever thought about taking yourself on a Dutch safari? You’d be surprised by the kind of wildlife you can find in the Netherlands!

Embark on this journey and have a gander; we guarantee you’ll soon be able to sort poezen from pluimvee (poultry) and ezels (donkeys) from the eenden (ducks) easily in no time.

Just stay away from any shady swan, which is all of them.

Parakeets fluttering through Amsterdam 🦜

If you’ve walked or rode through Vondelpark and caught a glimpse of what you think is a rose-ringed parakeet , chances are it’s not your imagination (or the shrooms you ingested).

These cheeky little birds are rumoured to have made Amsterdam their home after being accidentally released from an aviary at the zoo in the 1980s.

READ MORE |  Spotting Dutch birds: a bird expedition from your own home

True to their nature, they took to flight, and it is now estimated there are roughly 3,700 living the city life plus another 10,000 throughout the Netherlands.

wildlife in the netherlands parakeet

Their vibrant plumage and ability to mimic human speech are what make them so unique. They’re also considerably more appealing to look at when compared to pigeons.

If parakeets were cars, they’d be a Bentley, and those pigeons, an unremarkable Fiat. Sorry, not sorry, pigeons, but you didn’t make the “wildlife in the Netherlands” list today.

Seals off the island of Texel 🦭

Ahhh, don’t you love seals? Their inquisitive nature and portly figure make them ripe for enjoyment.

READ MORE |  The 8 greatest forests in the Netherlands for a nature escape

We always found that most of their appeal stems from how they go from being so clumsy on land to graceful and fluid as they move through the water.

If you’re thinking of searching through the Dutch wildlife, and want to catch a glimpse of these sea hounds, then low tide off the coast of Texel is your best bet.

Here you’ll find the aptly named “seal banks” in the Wadden Sea .

wildlife in the Netherlands seal

Watch them raise their offspring, play with friends or soak up the sun as they lay about on these exposed sand bars.

Fun fact: the Wadden Sea is the world’s largest unbroken system of inter-tidal sand and mudflats! (Feel free to whip that out when you have visitors you want to impress.)

Badgers hiding out in Friesland 🦡

Don’t bother getting up early if you’re looking to do a bit of badger spotting whilst on a Dutch safari, as badgers are nocturnal by nature.

READ MORE |  5 Dutch nature reserves to stretch your legs and enjoy the sights

They can, however, be spotted at dusk and night in the Hoge Veluwe or the forests of Limburg, Friesland , Drenthe and Overijssel. But let op! Badgers are vicious when provoked.

Their diet is relatively healthy. Fruit, nuts, and a little bit of protein, such as mice, or even worms, are on their menu for dinner.

zoo safari nederland

Until 1980, badger populations in the Netherlands decreased at an alarming rate. This can be attributed to poaching, large-scale land consolidation and sett-digging.

Luckily for the bulky-bodied and beady-eyed badger, in 1984, the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature Management and Fisheries outlined a conservation plan to protect them.

Since then, they have recovered and now enjoy a pleasant life meandering through the Dutch countryside at night, looking to pick up a quick meal or a badger girlfriend/boyfriend.

Foxes in the dunes of Scheveningen 🦊

Many of you probably already know this, but The Hague was originally built on dunes, so you can find such picturesque scenery just outside of the city limits near the coast.

READ MORE |  Hiking in The Hague: 11 nature spots for the outdoor adventurer

It’s well worth venturing out of Amsterdam, Rotterdam or Den Haag on a Dutch Safari to take in the view, but the probability of a chance encounter with nature’s most mischievous omnivorous mammal makes it even more special.

fox-in-dunes-of-scheveningen

Foxes are truly remarkable , and it’s believed that their hearing is so good they can hear a watch ticking from 40 yards away.

So, if you decide to take a cycle past their dunes , stay as quiet as possible and keep your eyes peeled.

Also, don’t tell your Dutch friends from the countryside you’re going fox spotting, as farmers love foxes about as much as Geert Wilders loves the Koran.

Good to know: Remember to keep your distance when observing animals in their natural habitat.

Lachlan Campbell

Don’t forget to include the majestic “Edelhert” – the Red Deer which is one of the largest species of deer in existence. The “Everzwijn” – Wild Boar – is pretty impressive too, especially given their temper and, if necessary, abillity to royally mess you up. And in a country the size of Holland there’s a significant chance you can spot either one if you have the patience and willingness to do so. Last but not least there’s more elusive ones like the Otter and Beaver and, the most majestic and elusive of all: the White-Tailed Sea Eagle!

P.S.: Even though you can’t actually venture into it, the Oostvaardersplassen are worth mentioning – be it protected from public access it is one of the most amazing/diverse ecosystems in Europe and, criticism not withstanding, is teeming with life including wild horses and various bovine.

The Oostvaarderplassen is amazing. We’ve seen the elusive ijsvogel and the wild horses are let into the public areas once in awhile and are completely tame around people.

For the lazy safari: the Scarlet Macaws that fly over Haarlem. If you persistently lie on De Bolwerken you will see them.

The fringe envy: Scottish Highland cattle in the Zuid Kennemer Duinen. Sometimes they get shampoed, so smell better than the visitors.

Herbivore land mammals: red deer, fallow deer, roe deer, mouflon, wild boar, beaver, wild hamster Carnivore land mammals: wolf (new), fox, racoondog, badger, otter, pinemarten, wild cat Carnivore sea mammals: common seal, grey seal Predatory birds: white tailed eagle, fish hawk (new), red kite (new), eagle owl Birds: crane, spoonbill, black grouse, kingfisher, parakeet, raven Reptiles: adder, ringsnake, sandlizzard, stone lizzard Observed in last 5 years: vulture, racoon, jackal

Zoos in the Netherlands: always fun

An eye for animals

Fortunately, modern zoos are no longer a collection of cages with fences around them. Entire habitats are created for the animals, in which they can move as freely as possible. There are many zookeepers, often with a specific expertise. In short, the animals there have a great life.

And that's good to know, because happy animals mean you can really enjoy being surprised and amazed by them. From lions to spiders and from tropical fish to elephants and monkeys, visiting the average Dutch zoo is like going on a safari.

An outing to be enjoyed by all

You can often take a boat or bus or other form of transport through the animal park, and the walkways are suitable for everyone – from little adventurers to wheelchairs. There are indoor playgrounds, feeding times, demonstrations and explanations about the animals. It really is a great day out with the whole family!

The zoos are often modern in design and offer the necessary education but are above all very fun and varied.

Horse about

One of the most popular zoos is Ouwehands Dierenpark in Rhenen, where a baby panda was born in 2020. Not far from there is the famous Burgers' Zoo in Arnhem. Go on a jungle discovery, have fun with the meerkats, and see polar bears and penguins underwater. Divided into different sections, you can walk from the South American rainforest to the Mexican desert and back again.

The Apenheul is a lovely park with monkeys. These clever, cheerful animals can also be found at many other zoos, for example in Amersfoort Zoo, Gaia Zoo, Dierenrijk or Diergaarde Blijdorp in Rotterdam.

At Blijdorp you can travel to Asia, Africa and North America all in one day. In WILDLANDS you can even go on an expedition to Antarctica! SEA LIFE in Scheveningen is modest in size, but certainly nice to visit and gives an insight into the marine life of the North Sea. For more aquatic life, including penguins and seals, we also recommend AquaZoo, Ecomare and the Pieterburen Seal Centre. Bird Park Avifauna is one of the most beautiful zoos for bird lovers, where you can enjoy the birds of prey shows and feed the parrots yourself. In short, a day at the zoo is an exciting and relaxing day out.

If you want even more animal park adventures, visit WILDLANDS in Drenthe or the Beekse Bergen in North Brabant. You can drive straight through 'Africa' in a safari bus or by car, or you can sail across the river in a boat. Crocodiles, lions, giraffes and hippos... you get to see wild animals quite up close, but always in a safe manner. You can even spend the night in the Beekse Bergen and, if you’re lucky, you just might see the animals drinking from the water hole in front of your own lodge in the morning.

Burgers’ Safari

Rotterdam Zoo

Experiencing a metropolitan city doesn’t have to be exempt from the enjoyment of flora and fauna. The Diergaarde Blijdorp zoological garden attracts young and old from all over the world. This Rotterdam Zoo has been around for more than one hundred years and is thus among Europe’s earliest. Stichting Koninklijke Rotterdamse Dierengaarde is the official Dutch name for the animal and botanic garden, which translates into a ‘royal foundation’.

The zoo opened more than a hundred sixty years ago and was at the start only open for members and notable inhabitants. Just before they were moving the zoo to a new location, World War II bombings destroyed the zoo. At the end of 1940, the new site opened again.

With this many years of experience, it is no wonder that the zoo is also one of the most beautiful in the area. There are animals from all around the world. Visitors don’t have to worry about rainy days. There are plenty of indoor spaces which resemble the animal’s habitat perfectly.

The mammals, reptiles, insects and other different species are living in ‘continents’. Taking a tour to see them feels like making a world tour. Amazonica is the home of exotic butterflies from South America, flowers, anacondas and the sharp-teethed piranha. In this sphere, you can undoubtedly experience tropical temperatures, just the way you would in the Amazon.

In Africa, Crocodile River has a path taking you past a group of crocodiles, leading up to stand face to face with magnificent giraffes. This area is also home to savannah residents, such as ostriches, hyenas and zebras. Gorilla Island is home to Bokito and his family, while forest giraffes share a Central African jungle-like space with different types of plants and birds that are native to their natural habitat.

Throughout Asia, you get to see elephants and an indoor tropical forest.

Oceanium, the roofed aquarium, offers a view into the world of many water inhabiting species. You get to see those that are in the depths of the sea, along coastal regions and marine life. Imagine seeing sharks, puffins, king penguins, jellyfish and sea lions! Read on to find out about how the Oceanium is saving energy. The zoo has a Green Key Gold quality mark.

Artica shows the Ice Cave and beautiful polar bears underwater.

Other animals include tigers, lions, rhinos and many more species.

Rotterdam Zoo is a durable zoo

In 2018 the Zoo reopened a newly renovated enclosure for a rare type of baboon from Ethiopia, called the Gelada baboons. They cannot be found in any other zoo in The Netherlands. The housing of this species is part of the conservation program. Diergaarde Blijdorp is not only a fun place to see animals but is also active in the preservation of nature and has many educational programs to support this noble and mandatory goal. Blijdorp is one of ten great zoos that prioritize the breeding of endangered animals. Furthermore, some places are providing electricity through solar panels. One of these places is the roof of the Oceanium. It holds one of The Netherland’s largest solar panel systems and generates energy up to the value of one hundred households. This is used to keep the penguins cool. Near Crocodile River, a wood oven fireplace is installed to warm the crocodiles. The smoke is filtered out of the air.

The preferred mode of transport to use by personnel is the electric car. On the premises, there are also five charging stations for electric vehicles, each containing two ports. The zoo stimulates the usage of electric cars by visitors.

The Zoo is easily reachable for wheelchair users. There are a limited number of wheelchairs available free of charge. Along the routes, there are benches for those that need a quick pause. Visitors that have children with them can also rent buggies.

Diergaarde Blijdorp offers several deals for different audiences. They have the perfect locations for parties, and also for business meetings. Schools get special educational tools; kids can be present when the animals are being fed, meet a keeper and also learn ways to protect the environment.

Besides educational programs and animal attractions, there are several restaurants, cafés and other eating places, including a pancake house. A gift shop in the Oceanium, Sea of Zoovenirs, sells keepsakes as well as the Buffalo Shop elsewhere. The shop also sells useful things like lunch boxes and hats.

People that buy their tickets online don’t have to stand in line at the entrance and can get discounts.

1. Gelderland 2. Utrecht 3. Groningen 4. Flevoland 5. Zuid-Holland 6. Noord-Holland 7. Drenthe 8. Noord-Brabant 9. Limburg 10. Friesland 11. Zeeland 12. Overijssel

Dierentuinen in Gelderland

Burgers’ zoo .

Dierentuinen in Utrecht

Dierenpark amersfoort.

Dierentuinen in Groningen

Dierentuinen in Flevoland

Dierentuinen in Zuid-Holland

Diergaarde blijdorp.

Dierentuinen in Noord-Holland

Dierenpark hoenderdaell.

Dierentuinen in Drenthe

Dierentuinen in Noord-Brabant

Safaripark beekse bergen.

Dierentuinen in Limburg

Dierentuinen in Friesland

Aquazoo leeuwarden.

Dierentuinen in Zeeland

Berkenhof tropical zoo.

Dierentuinen in Overijssel
