FREEDOM TRAILS: OPTIONS AND DATES FOR 2024

Coastal freedom trail and alberes mountains freedom trail – april, may, june, october 2024.

France to Spain

A journey taken by Jewish philosopher Walter Benjimin and may others during WW2 above the Vermillion coast and Costa Brava in the Alberes mountains. This was the route where escapees fled to Barcelona and beyond. We offer a classic route crossing the Col de Rumpissa and also an alternative escape over the Col de Banyuls, which was used both in the Spanish Civil War and WW2. You can also discover the role MI9 and SOE Special Operations Executive played in supporting escape lines. For this trek, we meet in Perpignan or Collioure and finish in Barcelona. Flights are best to Perpignan, Carcassonne or Barcelona.

This trek was covered by Jessica Shaw in the NY Times. You can read more about it in Jessica’s  excellent and moving article .

Classic Coastal Freedom Trail — Lisa Fittko and WW2 Escape Cols

Visiting escape cols used in the Spanish civil war and WW2. This Coastal Freedom Trail is hotel-based adventure following in the footseps of Lisa Fittko, a well-known guide or passeur , climbing up through the Alberes Mountains.

Collioure — Cadaques. 01 March — 30 June 2024 Contact [email protected] Book Now

Andorra Freedom Trail and Family Andorra Freedom Trail – May, June, July and September 2024

We offer the more challenging commemorative route crossing from France to Spain or a shorter Andorra Freedom Trail . The shorter route is roughly three follows following the passeurs footsteps from Tarascon-Sur-Ariege over to Soldeu over the 2262m Porte de Font Argente . The classic route is four days. Do get in touch if you have any questions about which route you might most enjoy. We look forward to hearing from you! Suitable for families

With either option we also have the chance to understand the context of the escapees’ journeys. There is the outdoor monument to les evadies in Tarascon and we offer a WW2 city tour of Toulouse, visiting Aeroscopia or the Resistance museum in Toulouse, as part of the trek programme.

Trip reviews.

“Just wanted to thank you for a wonderful time over the last week. You were a superb guide and I felt very safe in your hands. It was certainly a physical challenge for me and my caravan backpack but we all came through didn’t we? I’d have gladly parted with my bouncing bomb at any stage during the trek but Francis and the boys would never have let me forget it! ”  Dr Mike

“My best part of the trip was the wonderful people in my group! Day 3 of the hike was incredible – the scenery, food, horses, wildlife, etc. The most inspirational was the realisation that would hit at various times about the refugees who made the trip without the benefit of good food, good gear, etc. It was incredible to imagine.”   Shelby Kerns

“Can’t thank you enough for everything you did to make our trek such a resounding success.  As good as it gets!”  Rowan Paterson, Director, The Ultimate Travel Company

Mountain Wildlife - an Isard

Adventure, Discover, Respect.

Trekking In The Pyrenees.

WW2 Escape Lines. Lakes and Summits. Wildlife and Flowers. Multi Day Refuge to Refuge Treks.

Escape and Evasion Line Specialist.

The Pyrenees are a mountain chain that separates France from Spain. To evade from Nazi occupied Europe into neutral Spain during World War 2 meant crossing these mountains. They represented both a physical barrier blocking the way but also a gateway to freedom. Come and follow in the footsteps of those that made the crossing and experience what it was like. Learn about who made the crossing and why and about the people that made the crossings possible. You can choose one of the better known Escape and Evasion lines like the Chemin de la Liberté/Freedom Trail as seen on the Channel 4 series 'Freedom Trails' with Monty Halls , or perhaps you have the Escape and Evasion report of a family member and want to retrace their actual footsteps across the Pyrenees.

A guided mountain walking holiday with a difference. Although it may be challenging at times, there will also be fun and enjoyment and you will leave the Pyrenees with some wonderful memories having learnt a great deal. There is an enormous feeling of pride and satisfaction on reaching Spain having crossed over the Pyrenees.

Pyrenees Mountain Adventure believes that through the adventure of walking along the route of an Escape and Evasion line, that pushes you out of your comfort zone, comes discovery .

Discovery about yourself, those you are adventuring with and those that walked to freedom during World War 2 and those that risked their lives to help them. Leading on from discovery comes respect .

Self respect , respect for your trekking companions and ultimately respect for the escapers, evaders and the brave men and women of the Escape and Evasion networks.

Excellent Customer Care.

Pyrenees Mountain Adventure is a proudly independent trekking company. Because we are small and flexible, we are able to offer excellent customer care. From your initial enquiries, through planning and preparation of the your dream itinerary to your actual holiday experience, the Pyrenees Mountain Adventure team is working hard alongside you to give you your perfect Pyrenees mountain adventure. Check out the feedback from clients who have already enjoyed walks and treks in the Pyrenees with Pyrenees Mountain Adventure. We look forward to seeing you in the Pyrenees soon!

Bespoke trek planning service.

After 10 years of experience, Pyrenees Mountain Adventure has built up an extensive knowledge of the Pyrenees and WW2 Escape and Evasion lines from France into Spain, and France into Andorra. With this knowledge and experience, the PMA team are able to design and deliver a walking holiday that follows in the actual footsteps of your relative(s). A living memorial to your loved one(s). Guests taking pictures with a breathtaking arch on Best of Moab Mountain Bike tour with Escape Adventures

Moab, circa 2018, has it all: from white-water rafting to horseback riding, phenomenal climbing routes to the five diamond mountain biking. Forasmuch, it was this incomparable grouping of big outdoor recreational opportunities and pursuits that compelled the first wave of adventurer-seekers to settle here, and thus transform this delightful little city.

Our tour is like a Moab’s Best Of/greatest hits album. Signature slickrock trails offer challenging, if fun rides for all levels of riders, marked by seemingly endless singletrack that shade each day. Off the bike, our tours have built-in side hikes. The latter lend intimate optics onto some of the area’s most astonishing natural features, as we view-find from characteristic natural arches to age-old petroglyphs. Invariably it’s not a stretch by any means to see a genuine dinosaur footprint out on one of our select trails.

Day 1-2: Meet in Moab. Ride beautiful singletrack and slickrock on Brand Trails, Klondike Trails, and Mag 7 Trails. Customized to each group. Day 3-4: Ride sections of Porcupine Rim Trail. Hike amongst the massive sandstone arches of Arches National Park. Day 5: Ride amazing trail through Dead Horse Point State Park on the border of Canyonlands National Park.

Escape Adventures, Inc. is an authorized concessioner of Canyonlands National Park.

Located in the Heart of Canyonlands and just 4 miles from Arches National Park, is the Big Horn Lodge, one of Moab’s finest lodging accommodations. The Big Horn Lodge features an outdoor heated pool and a great locals favorite, Smitty’s Gold Steak Restaurant, located on site.

“The room was a nice rustic feel and very clean. The beds were comfortable and had nice amenities. Great rate. Easy drive to the Arches and Canyonlands. Close to restaurants and stores. McDonalds next door for quick meal before hiking.” -Kathy

First-Class Desert Camping Bike Tours | Escape Adventures

The food tastes better, the sky is certainly bigger, and your mind is clearer.

There is nothing better than rolling into camp to fresh made chips and salsa, homemade guacamole, and Dutch oven enchiladas. Then making your way to a sweet and inviting campfire, sharing your favorite anecdote or image from the day’s activities while marshmallows roast. Inside your tent: a sturdy raised cot, fluffy sleeping bag, and a plush full size pillow. Wow. You earned this. Sweet dreams.

adventure escape trek

We choose well-maintained public campgrounds with scenic vistas and comfortable arrangements. You’ll move seamlessly from one day of your trip to the next, camping outdoors and enjoying wildly healthy, delicious homemade meals.

The majority of our selected campgrounds feature indoor facilities and showers. Conversely, in more remote backcountry camping scenarios, we’ll provide portable toilets and private solar showers.

Camping gear  may be rented or you may bring your own. All of our camping gear is tested and hand-chosen from top manufacturers to ensure you get a good night’s sleep. Our camp gear package includes a tent, sleeping pad, raised cot, sleeping bag, sleeping bag liner, full size pillow, and ground tarp.

While every Escape Adventure trip is designed to appeal to active adventure seekers, and in many cases, particular skill levels, there is always a different idea of what that exactly means. That is why we have designed the chart below to help make sure you join the proper tour. We know your pace may vary from one day to the next—and your traveling companions’ may differ as well. We present a range of mileage options on each tour as well as provide support vehicles as much as possible. That way you can take a break and do as little or as much as you would like each day.

Why travel with Escape Adventures?

Our commitment to you.

For over 25 years, the hallmark of an Escape Adventures tour is personalized, hands-on service. Before, during, and after each trip. We are a company of honesty and integrity and we stand behind our product 100%. From the moment you learn of our trips, to the time you return home and start planning your next trip, we are here to bring you the best possible experience. From our Guaranteed Trip Departure Confirmation Policy, making sure your trip is never cancelled*, to our 100% Satisfaction Guarantee Policy, backing the unrivaled consistent quality of all our tours, our commitment to you is never compromised. * Scheduled Domestic trips only.

Our Commitment to the Environment

Our environmental commitment is second to none. It is our way of doing business, our way of being. We run our tours the same way we run our company, with an eye on the triple bottom line: People, Profit & Planet. At Escape Adventures, we elected to pursue a more comprehensive approach to actually reduce our carbon footprint, rather than just offset it. We overhauled our entire operation — from our vehicles, to our buildings, to our procedures — to become an outdoor industry leader in the charge to help our people and our planet.

Exceptional Service and Exceptional Guides

Leading tours naturally followed from our passion of exploring our favorite places with our friends. Our support staff includes our reservation team who is there to answer your questions about the tours, our service team who prepares your bike and gear for the tour, and our guide team – the ones who take you into the great outdoors. The highest level of responsibility, good nature, integrity, and dedication are standard traits of all those who work at Escape Adventures. We our proud of it and we think you should know it.

The Best Support Vehicles

Having custom-made vehicles allows us to take you to places few other outfitters can, or will go. Every Escape Adventures tour is accompanied by at least one support vehicle, trailer, and in some cases a second and third transfer van. After purchase, we custom engineer our trucks, vans, and trailers by our on-staff mechanic to meet the unique needs of different tours. For example, certain trucks are specifically designed for The White Rim and The Maze, while others are designed for The Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. Each of our guides is required to be trained in safe vehicle operation, 4X4 driving, and basic maintenance. Our experienced guides make it look easy, transporting you and up to 12 guests, along with their bikes, fresh food, camping gear and plenty of drinking water to a remote location.

The Best Bicycles and Gear

Make your trip as comfortable as possible on the body, as simple as possible for traveling, and hassle-free on tour. By choosing to rent a bike from us, we will fit you with the newest, highest quality gear in the industry. Escape Adventures provides only high-end bicycles from Santa Cruz and Specialized. We replace our rental fleet each season to ensure all our rentals meet our standards. All of our mountain bikes are equipped with full suspension frames and disc brakes designed for a smooth, comfortable ride. For those who are touring with a companion who may not be as fit or need a little help up the hills, we now have eMountainbikes (electric pedal assist) available on select tours.

The Best Food

Our food isn’t just good, it’s good for you.

Food is a big part of the Escape Adventures experience. Our guides prepare all of your meals on our camping trips. Expect three delicious meals a day consisting entirely of freshly prepared foods. These include fresh organic fruits and vegetables as well as meats. We also have energy snacks aboard our support vehicles. Don’t be surprised if your guides purchase fresh fruits and healthy snacks throughout the day while you are out riding. They may just show up on the trail with a local treat! Many of our guests are vegans or vegetarians, whom we are more than happy to accommodate. If you have special diet requirements or limitations, just let us know when you sign-up and we’ll work with you to meet your needs.

Yes, Escape Himalaya offers airport pickup services for our clients. We recognize the significance of a seamless arrival and strive to guarantee a trouble-free beginning to your journey. When you reserve a trek or tour with us, you can coordinate with our team to schedule a representative to greet you at the airport upon your arrival.

The costs to prolong or upgrade hotel accommodation in Kathmandu may vary based on preferred hotel rates.

Would it be possible for me to upgrade my accommodation to a luxury hotel in Kathmandu?

Unofficial Moscow must-see adventure!

During this 1-hour long quest, you will find yourself in a Soviet-type bunker exploring rooms for keys, trying to solve the puzzle and get out 'before it's too late'. Totally feels like a first-person video game. Will be interesting for all ages and genders. Perfect bonding experience for couples or a group of friends. The 1950s intro video gives you an 'experiment gone wrong' feeling preparing you for the adventure ahead. Spooky but not scary. Important: the game is available in Russian and in English (intro video, clues, and voice recording giving hints), so feel free to bring your foreign friends along. Notes: advanced booking required, a bit far out (but quite easy to find). GREAT experience, lots of FUN, definitely a MUST-SEE!

2 friends with limited computer/role playing/quest type experience, but had a great time. Scared the crap out of each other and would go back in a second!

One of the best ways to spend your time and money! Very interesting and entertaining, cool atmosphere, nice staff (and they speak English!) Unfortunately we didn't win, but it was totally worth it! Highly recommended to everyone!

Our trip to Laboratory was spontaneous - we wanted to have some fun with our friends. So we checked tripadvisor.com, saw the laboratory 33 being #1 and that was enough. We booked a game and the next day set off to the quest. You know what - it is amazing! Astonishing! Brilliant and unbelievable! I had never had such kind of emotions - joy and fear at the same time, growing interest and pride for my humble but correct guessings. It's definitely the best entertainment in Moscow! Thank you for that chance to experience something new but really cool!

Great fun to do with friends! The game actually has an ENGLISH version so be sure to ask for it when you book. The game is set up really good and you really get into the game!!

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been renewed for a fourth season

While paramount has ordered another season of star trek: discovery, the lower decks animated spinoff has been canceled..

By Charles Pulliam-Moore , a reporter focusing on film, TV, and pop culture. Before The Verge, he wrote about comic books, labor, race, and more at io9 and Gizmodo for almost five years.

Season 3 of Paramount Plus’ Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is still in production, but the streamer has already decided to renew the series. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said of Star Trek: Lower Decks , which is coming to an end.

Paramount Plus announced today that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will be back for a fourth season following the premiere of its third sometime in 2025, and Star Trek: Lower Deck s’ upcoming fifth season will be the series’ finale. In a statement about Strange New Worlds ’ renewal, executive producer Alex Kurtzman and showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers said they were thrilled about being able to continue telling new stories about the crew of the Enterprise.

And while Lower Decks is wrapping up, Kurtzman and showrunner Mike McMahan hinted that the crew of the Cerritos could “live on with new adventures” in the future after season five brings the series to a close this fall.

Discovery’s moll & l’ak are “the coolest couple in star trek history”, say season 5’s new actors.

Exclusive: Star Trek: Discovery is full of love stories but season 5's new stars Elias Toufexis and Eve Harlow say Moll and L'ak are the best couple.

Warning: This Article Contains SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5

  • Moll and L'ak are more than villains, they are head over heels in love and racing the USS Discovery for the Progenitors' hidden power.
  • Elias Toufexis and Eve Harlow believe Moll and L'ak are the coolest couple in Star Trek history.
  • Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 focuses on love stories and the reasons behind Moll and L'ak's actions are explained.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5's new cast members, Elias Toufexis and Eve Harlow, make their case for L'ak and Moll as the "coolest couple in Star Trek history." Moll and L'ak are Discovery season 5's main antagonists, but they're more than villains seeking the ancient treasure of the Progenitors. L'ak and Moll are head-over-heels in love , and they're racing with the USS Discovery to locate the hidden power to create life itself in Star Trek: Discovery season 5.

Eve Harlow and Elias Toufexis spoke with Screen Rant for an upcoming exclusive interview about Star Trek: Discovery season 5. While Discovery is full of love stories such as Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala), and Ambassador Saru (Doug Jones) and President T'Rina (Tara Rosling), Toufexis and Harlow set Moll and L'ak above them and explain why they feel the renegade couriers are the best couple in Star Trek . Read their quotes below:

Elias Toufexis: I’d say they’re the best couple in Star Trek history.
Eve Harlow: Obviously, we’re the best because it’s us!
Elias Toufexis: I mean, look, they’re the coolest. They’re the coolest couple in Star Trek history, that's for sure. They're smart. They're in love. They're passionate. They know what they want. They do what they need to do to get it. And they don't care who's standing in their way. But they're not inherently evil. They're not inherently villains, really. Yeah, they're the antagonists of the show. But they're doing what they're doing for a reason. And those reasons are explained. And that's one of my favorite things about this season, that they're explained. The reasons are shown why we're doing what we're doing.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

What star trek: discovery season 5 has revealed about moll & l'ak so far, moll and l'ak are one step ahead of discovery.

Moll and L'ak have been billed as the Bonnie and Clyde of Star Trek: Discovery season 5, but this isn't quite an accurate description of the couple. Unlike Bonnie and Clyde, the romance between Moll and L'ak doesn't harbor dysfunction. L'ak and Moll are deeply devoted to each other and united in their common goal to find the Progenitors' treasure before the USS Discovery. Cleveland Booker even sees the parallel between Moll and L'ak and himself and Michael Burnham when they were still together, which reminds him of what he lost.

The details of Moll and L'ak's love story are yet to be revealed in Star Trek: Discovery season 5.

Rather than power or wealth, however, what Moll and L'ak treasure most is freedom , and perhaps this is what they intend to buy if they locate the Progenitors' technology. Curiously, L'ak is of a currently identified species while Moll is a human whose real name is Malinne Booker. Moll is the daughter of Book's mentor , Cleveland Booker IV, which, in his mind, sort of makes them "family." The details of Moll and L'ak's love story are yet to be revealed in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, and it remains to be seen if a happy ending is possible for the 32nd century's coolest couple.

Officials: Man who killed North Country 'Star Trek' tour guide, Elvis impersonator used chloroform

N ew details have emerged in the death of a Ticonderoga man known for his work as an Elvis Presley impersonator and as a tour guide for a local "Star Trek" museum after he went missing last weekend.

Thomas Krider, who worked under the stage name TJ Greene, was a popular impersonator who also worked at the Star Trek Tour as a guide.

The Saratoga County Sheriff's Office reported on Tuesday that Krider had been found dead in Milton, New York, after he was reported missing by his wife on Saturday morning, according to the Times Union.

On Tuesday, the Saratoga County Sheriff's Office said they had arrested 69-year-old Ronald Rayher, of Milton, on charges of second-degree manslaughter and tampering with physical evidence.

The sheriff's office said Rayher allegedly killed Krider at his home in Milton on April 5. They said Rayher, a retired chiropractor, administered a substance called chloroform more than once and also allegedly tampered with and suppressed evidence after the incident.

Krider's wife, Heidi Greene, told the Times Union that her husband had left their home on Friday to pick up a free box spring from someone in exchange for helping them move some furniture.

Saratoga County Undersheriff Jeffrey Brown confirmed that Rayher and Krider had been in a relationship with one another for around 10 years.

Brown told the Times Union that the chloroform was administered consensually during what was described as a sexual encounter.

According to court documents obtained by NBC5, officials stated that Krider, who was bound and restrained at the time of his death, died after the chloroform was administered "more than one time".

Greene said Krider was supposed to return home to work a shift as a tour guide at his job at Star Trek Tour that weekend, as well as to work for a special event during the solar eclipse, but wasn't heard from again.

He loved his job too much to ever miss a shift, Greene told the Times Union.

Greene told the Times Union that she and Krider were both Poultney residents who had met nearly 20 years ago while working at the Rutland, Vermont, Walmart. They moved to the Glens Falls area soon after, where Krider worked as a costumed character at Six Flags Great Escape.

James Cawley, of the Ticonderoga Star Trek Tour, released the following statement about Krider's death, saying in part:

"TJ Greene was an employee and tour guide at the Star Trek Set Tour and a great friend to everyone here. He was a talented Elvis tribute artist. He will be remembered for his kind and trusting soul and his warm, friendly demeanor. We are devastated by his loss and will keep him close to our hearts."

Rayher was arraigned in Milton Town Court and remanded to the Saratoga County Jail on 250,000 bail.

The sheriff's department confirmed that more charges could be coming since this is an ongoing investigation. He is due back in court in May.

Editor's note: The Times Union is owned by NBC5's parent company, Hearst Corporation.

An earlier version of this story stated that Krider also acted as a "Star Trek" impersonator.

Nevada Today

Wilderness medicine program director leads a life of adventure, wilderness and sports medicine specialist arthur "tony" islas, m.d., wields his expertise on and off the path.

David Fiore and Arthur Islas holding up a sign that says "Wilderness Medicine" in a forest next to a waterfall.

Islas (right), along with his collaborators like David Fiore, M.D., (left), see an increased demand for doctors with a unique, varied skillset and are working to build a curriculum that would attract prospective wilderness medicine fellows.

Although Arthur “Tony” Islas typically applies his wilderness medicine expertise in treacherous outdoor environments, it came in handy far sooner than expected while on an airplane to South America.

On the excursion to Argentina, Islas found himself diverting a flight to land in Panama so that a traveler on board could receive emergency surgery after his quick assessment deduced life-threatening abdominal pain. The patient has since recovered.

Mere minutes later, he was summoned again to help a flight attendant free a utensil wedged between her recently crowned teeth.

“And that was all before we had even gotten there!” Islas said with a laugh.

The call to adventure

Islas, M.D., MPH, FAWM, FAMSSM, CAQ-Sports Medicine, is the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine's (UNR Med) director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship , and a professor in the Department of Family Medicine, through which he founded the Wilderness Medicine Fellowship program.

His work takes him around the world. His most recent adventure had him serving as a non-paid consultant for Global Rescue, a program that provides medical evacuation to adventurers. Although his travel expenses were covered, Islas specifies that his consultation is “ non-paid” to avoid any conflict of interest.

While in Argentina, Islas worked with local medical professionals to develop new treatment approaches for those scaling Aconcagua, one of the famous “ Seven Summits” and the highest mountain in the world outside of Asia.

Eric Johnson and Arthur Islas taking a selfie with the Aconcagua Mountains in the background.

“I was an educator and resource for the physicians who were there at the base camp,” he said. “We worked within the Argentinian health care system to try to put together a better system of care for the climbers that are attempting Aconcagua. ”

Islas and his partners noticed an increase in altitude-related illnesses on the mountain, specifically, High-Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE). This was in addition to multiple other injuries and illnesses including frostbite requiring amputation and various other levels of altitude sickness.

Although Islas and the local physicians can’t say for certain why there are more serious cases of HAPE at Aconcagua, he said the uptick in maladies may be partially attributed to an influx of “adventure travelers” who learn about places like Aconcagua from social media and may not invest as much time into practice and planning before attempting the climb.

Islas' friend, Wongchuu Sherpa, giving Islas a head massage.

That’s not to deter people from seeking out adventure, for Islas himself is an avid traveler and explorer. He’s been to Everest more than once and speaks fondly of the community he’s formed there. His office is filled with relics from his journeys: colorful Tibetan prayer flags, a small tapestry depicting the Aztec god of medicine, countless trophies, and a banner for the Wongchhu Sherpa Memorial Hospital in Nepal, named for Islas’ late friend and beloved Everest sherpa.

Islas and a bunch of hikers looking at a map of Mount Everest.

Even back in Reno, Nevada the adventure never stops for Islas. Between reviewing X-rays for student athletes, recruiting medical fellows for the programs he oversees, and planning out workshops for local organizations, Islas wields all his medical titles daily. Although family, sports and wilderness medicine may seem disparate on paper, to Islas they are all deeply connected. That intersection is where he finds the most joy and fulfillment.

“I’ve always been a wilderness guy,” he said.

Islas knew early on that it would be a focus for him, but when he was first starting out as a doctor, he was the “border health guy” in El Paso, Texas, where he completed some of his medical study.

“I was on the U.S.-Mexico border for a number of years, and I ran a series of clinics way out in the boonies,” he said. “And one of the things about Texas, whether you’re on the border or not, is that if you work in a small town, you better be on the sidelines for Friday night football. It’s a big deal.”

Sports as a focus for his medical practice was a perfect fit.

“ I started doing that as a regular family physician and realized that this is something I really liked and wanted to get more involved in,” he said.

As an avid outdoorsman himself, he knew firsthand that, “ those out there in the wilderness, those are athletes. And if I became a sports medicine physician, it would allow me to be a better wilderness physician. So that was the straw that broke the camel’s back.”

Islas took a sabbatical year to complete a sports medicine fellowship, then returned to El Paso to build the sports medicine program at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso. That led to an opportunity to move to Reno in 2015.

“ One of the reasons we chose to move out here was because it gave me all the foundation I needed to build the wilderness medicine program,” said Islas. “ We have every type of environment you could ever want, whether it’s subterranean, whether it’s desert, forest, high altitude. If I want to get to the beach, it’s not too far. It has everything I could ever want for a wilderness medicine educational laboratory. What better place to do this?”

Islas teaching a students out in the mountains near the UNR Med campus.

There were “ like minds” here as well, Islas said, citing other members of the Wilderness Medicine Fellowship team, including Richard Williams, M.D., David Fiore, M.D., Dan Spogen, M.D., and Gary Johnson, M.D., who first spearheaded the University’s student elective in wilderness medicine in 1996. As far as the team knows, it’s the oldest program of its kind in the country. A quick glance at the team’s biography page reveals a united passion for adventuring, education, and medicine.

Islas beams with pride talking about his contributions to this team, but another role he celebrates is being the medical director for Great Basin National Park, where he oversees medical operations for park visitors.

“I always say, ‘I hold two of the greatest Nevada jobs in medicine,’” said Islas.

‘Ready for whatever’s next’

Islas and his collaborators see an increased demand for doctors with a unique, varied skillset. He’s working on building a curriculum that would attract prospective wilderness medicine fellows and send them on expeditions around the world, like a three-week rotation serving at a Himalayan hospital.

Islas encourages aspiring medical professionals to seek out any learning opportunity they can find.

“If you’re a health care provider or health care student, getting into the wilderness medical society is a great place to start,” he said. “And for someone who isn’t yet in the medical sciences but wants to learn more about it, look around for wilderness first aid trainings. If you spend a lot of time in the outdoors, it’s something you should investigate anyway.”

And as for Islas, more adventures are imminent, including potential excursions to Mongolia or the African continent. He’ll be ready for whatever’s next.

“You never know what will come up,” he said. “The world is wide.”
