The power of instant bookings

Unlike commercial airlines, which may require booking well in advance for the best rates and availability, private jet charters offer the luxury of instant bookings. This flexibility makes private jet charters ideal for those unexpected last-minute business meetings, spontaneous getaways, or urgent personal matters.

Wide range of options

Despite being a last-minute arrangement, private jet charters do not compromise on the choice of aircraft. Whether you prefer a light jet for short, quick trips or a long-range jet for transcontinental journeys, you’ll have a range of options to suit your specific needs.

Streamlined booking process

Focusing on delivering exceptional customer service, private jet charter companies have refined their booking processes to be as efficient as possible. You can confirm your booking within minutes, with all the necessary details taken care of by a dedicated charter expert.

Tailored in-flight services

Last-minute travel does not mean you have to sacrifice comfort or luxury. Private jets come equipped with top-class amenities, and many charter services allow you to personalize your in-flight experience, from preferred meals and drinks to entertainment choices.

A restful journey

Traveling, especially last-minute, can be stressful. But the serene environment of a private jet allows for a peaceful journey. You can unwind, catch up on sleep, or even continue with work in a quiet, undisturbed setting.

24/7 Availability: There When You Need It Most

Around-the-clock service

Private jet charters usually offer round-the-clock service, meaning you can arrange a flight outside typical business hours. This flexibility is crucial for accommodating last-minute plans, particularly unexpected ones.

The 8 cheapest ways to get the private jet experience

Once upon a time, extremely wealthy people bought their own planes. Later, other rich people realized they could buy shares in a jet instead of owning one since rare was the person who needed to use it on a daily basis. Today, alternatives to commercial air travel are entering the "Uber age," making airplane travel an on-demand perk as accessible as ordering up a car.

In the space pioneered by venerable players such as NetJets and XO, nimble newcomers are redefining what we'll call "affordable private jet luxury." You no longer necessarily have to pay thousands of dollars per flight; all you need is an app, as little as a few hundred bucks and, often, a tolerance for tiny aircraft.

For the latest travel news, deals and points and miles tips, sign up for our daily newsletter .

The latest wave of growth is just the beginning. "The private jet industry is currently booming," says Andres Morales, executive vice president of global operations for the aviation consultation company Skyline Group MC. "With more companies and individuals buying private aircraft, more jets are flying under capacity, so they look for different ways to offset their cost of ownership. That has resulted in an increase in the accessibility to flying private through different digital platforms that connect the consumer to a private aircraft."

The newer players are capitalizing on three trends.

First, cautious travelers are seeking ways to avoid crowded airport terminals and packed aircraft cabins during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Second, airlines are pulling back from less-profitable routes to smaller airports, complicating commercial travel to second-tier destinations.

And third, elite flyers who typically travel business class are getting fed up with some hassles of flying commercial. Security lines have grown significantly, legroom is shrinking and personal device holders are replacing inflight entertainment screens on some airlines.

Private jet operators are seeing a dramatic rise in demand as a result of the pandemic.

"Unsurprisingly, we have witnessed a substantial increase in the demand for private aviation — both from new members of XO and current members — during this sensitive time triggered by the coronavirus," Ron Silverman, chief commercial officer of California-based on-demand private jet charter company XO, told us. "We expect demand to continue to grow as the situation remains unsettled and we are committed to meeting these requests."

With that in mind, let's look at some of the emerging players in the "affordable private jet luxury" space. While some services on this list are not entirely private, they all offer the convenience of flying out of smaller airports and private terminals where you can usually arrive just minutes before your scheduled departure time and avoid long security lines.

JSX calls itself an "industry disruptor" aiming to "revolutionize the flying experience" with "celeb-worthy flying at an accessible price." Behind the hype is a straightforward proposition: You're buying a seat on a "private" jet rather than chartering the whole plane.

JSX's fleet of Embraer E135 and E145 regional jets operates scheduled service seven days a week between cities throughout the West Coast and Texas, including Burbank, California (BUR); Las Vegas (LAS); Oakland, California (OAK); Santa Ana, California (SNA); Phoenix (PHX); Reno-Tahoe (RNO); Dallas (DAL); Houston (HOU); and more.

JSX also operates various seasonal and pop-up flights, such as to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico (SJD). The planes have 30 seats onboard, so they're not truly private, but they're much more spacious than most regional jets and have some other advantages over traditional commercial flights.

A huge part of JSX's selling proposition is being able to arrive just 20 minutes before your flight. The jets operate from private hangars and terminals so there are no long check-in lines, traditional Transportation Security Administration screenings or baggage checks. The Points Guy has experienced JSX multiple times, noting that the experience was remarkably hassle-free .

Flights clock in as low as $129 each way and you can even earn JetBlue TrueBlue points for your flights . Among the believers is JetBlue founder David Neeleman , who invested; JetBlue and Qatar Airways also took a stake.

Although perhaps best known for its continuous helicopter service to airports in New York, Miami and Los Angeles, Blade offers on-demand charters for helicopters, turboprops and any class of private jet to practically anywhere in the world. As you'd expect, chartering an entire plane isn't cheap, but much like JSX, Blade also lets you book by the seat on regularly scheduled flights to popular vacation spots such as Aspen, Colorado; Miami; and Nassau, Bahamas.

Blade also offers a feature called "FlightTilt" that allows you to propose a shared charter on your schedule. The flight is confirmed once four other seats are sold. Alternatively, if you're looking to fly between New York and Florida and want to guarantee your shared charter at the time of booking, you can reserve a minimum of two seats for $3,750 each and allow Blade to sell the remaining seats on your flight.

Blade's scheduled New York-to-Miami service, dubbed BladeOne , is operated using uniquely configured Bombardier CRJ200s that fly between Westchester, New York (HPN), and Miami's Opa Locka Airport (OPF). This type of aircraft is typically used as a regional commercial passenger jet and can hold up to 50 people, but Blade's have been converted into luxury jets for 16.

Onboard, passengers enjoy an array of amenities, such as gourmet food provided by BLT restaurants, iPads preloaded with entertainment, cashmere blankets and specially designed amenity kits with personal care products from boutique brands.

One-way tickets start at $2,850 each (or $3,345, including 15-minute helicopter transfers) between Manhattan and Westchester. What ups the value is that if you purchase a set of two round-trip tickets on BladeOne, you'll also get a room for the weekend at the opulent Faena Hotel Miami Beach . I recently got to experience this service and it was truly A-list from beginning to end.

BladeOne flights to Aspen are operated by a Gulfstream G400 Large Jet and start at $3,500 per seat. Regardless of whether it's a BladeOne or FlightTilt flight, Blade is now requiring all passengers to be fully vaccinated .

If you're new to Blade, you can receive $50 off your first flight when you sign up with the code BRIANF&F. Those under 28 can get discounts on flights between Manhattan and the Hamptons in New York; Nantucket, Massachusetts; and Miami with a Blade-GX membership.

Much like BladeOne, Aero sells seats on shared private jet flights. It offers routes to popular vacation destinations, such as Los Angeles to Aspen; Napa Valley, California; Jackson Hole, Wyoming; and Sun Valley, Idaho. On Oct. 14, it will also be launching flights between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

Flights depart and arrive in private terminals. They're operated by Embraer ERJ135LR jets, with 16 first-class seats arranged in a 1-1 configuration. Expect generous legroom, ample headroom and complimentary snacks and drinks. Even better, you can change or cancel your trip up to 48 hours before departure.

What if you could fly as often as you want, whenever you want, for a monthly membership fee? That's the concept behind Los Angeles-based Surf Air, which pioneered "all you can fly" in 2013. You can arrive up to 15 minutes before your flight on one of Surf Air's Swiss-built Pilatus PC-12 single-engine turboprops; New York fashion house Bespoken designed the clubby interiors.

Since its U.S. debut, more than 215,000 guests have flown Surf Air between about a dozen West Coast destinations, including Los Angeles, Oakland and Santa Barbara, California. Moving forward, the company plans to improve its operation by honing in on a few key routes, such as the Bay Area to Los Angeles and Dallas to Houston.

The company offers four membership options, ranging from $199 per month to $2,999 per month:

  • Access ($199 per month): Gain access to all flights on a per-seat basis.
  • Advanced ($999 per month): Unlimited off-peak flights for free and access to buy everything else.
  • Freedom ($2,499 per month): Access the majority of flight inventory, including peak flights, for free.
  • Unlimited ($2,999 per month): Fly where and when you want across the entire network with no limits.

The per-seat price for scheduled flights usually starts at $99 for off-peak, $199 for peak and $349 for premium. You can unlock preferred pricing and flight credits with a FoundersCard membership.

Surf Air recently added nationwide on-demand charters to its offerings, with charters starting at $400 per hour. You can choose from thousands of aircraft and book directly online without needing to speak with a broker. Like Blade, Surf Air does not own or operate any aircraft but rather acts as an agent for its members.

If you frequently travel between California, Arizona and Nevada, you might want to consider a Set Jet membership. For $99.95 per month (plus a one-time $99.95 security-check fee) you can book seats on private jet flights along the West Coast for just $450 to $490 each way — basically the cost of a commercial first-class ticket.

last minute jet tours

Set Jet currently offers flights between Scottsdale, Arizona; Las Vegas; Los Angeles; Orange County, California; San Diego; and San Francisco, as well seasonal flights to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and Aspen ($1,000 to $1,700 each way).

Rather than have a fixed schedule, flight times are determined by the first person to request the flight. Flights are operated exclusively by Bombardier Challenger 850 aircraft with 13-16 seats. Onboard, you can expect complimentary top-shelf alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, premium snacks and free in-flight Wi-Fi. Set Jet also doesn't charge extra for bags or if you elect to bring a pet along.

last minute jet tours

In the next 12 months, Set Jet plans to acquire two Embraer Lineage 1000s and launch a $1,000-per-month "elite membership." With this membership, you'll be able to book cross-country flights between Los Angeles and New York for just $3,799 each way.

Wheels Up is one of the biggest players in the industry and has been growing rapidly through the acquisition of companies including Delta Private Jets, Gama Aviation Signature and Mountain Aviation.

It launched in 2013 with a membership-only model focused on an exclusive fleet of Beechcraft King Air 350i aircraft but has since transitioned to a diversified services provider with one of the industry's largest fleets of owned, managed and third-party partner aircraft. Members can choose from more than 1,500 planes, including the King Air 350i, Cessna Citation Excel/XLS, Cessna Citation X and many others in the light jet, midsize jet, super-midsize jet and large-cabin jet categories.

last minute jet tours

It offers three membership tiers — Connect, Core and Business. Initiation fees range from $2,995 in year one for a Connect membership to upward of $29,500 in year one for the Business membership. Annual dues drop to $2,495 and $14,500, respectively, in year two. However, thanks to a new partnership with American Express, you can now get up to 40% off your membership and other perks if you have The Platinum Card® from American Express.

Connect members get access to some of the most popular Wheels Up features, including Hot Flights, which allows you to book discounted empty leg flights — when an aircraft is scheduled to fly without any passengers — for as low as $320 for an entire plane.

Related: Everything you need to know about Wheels Up private jet memberships

Like JSX and Blade, you can also "fly by the seat" on scheduled shuttle or charter flights to popular events. Core and Business members can take advantage of 24- and 48-hour aircraft-type guarantees, plus dynamic pricing with rates capped at $4,695 per hour for a King Air 350i. A midsized partner jet will set you back $7,695 per hour.

Members also have the opportunity to fast-track Delta Medallion status , earn Delta SkyMiles, get discounts on select Delta fares and more. Non-travel "Wheels Down" benefits include access to events such as private parties at Art Basel Miami , the Super Bowl and a hospitality house at the Masters Tournament.

last minute jet tours

In early 2021, Wheels Up quietly opened its mobile app to non-members. Now, anyone can book charter flights, but the rates will be higher. Non-members also don't have the same aircraft-availability guarantees as members or access to features such as shared flights or empty leg Hot Flights.

Related: Yes, you can fly private — here's the secret that will help you do it

While XO made a name for itself through its on-demand charter services, it also offers the ability to purchase individual seats on a growing number of regularly scheduled flights, as well as crowdsourced flights. XO-initiated "shuttle" flights, such as between New York and South Florida, start around $995 for members and $1,390 for non-members. These shuttle flights include a cabin attendant and complimentary food and drinks.

XO also frequently offers empty leg specials which can feature savings of about 50%-75%. While most empty leg specials are for the entire aircraft, XO sometimes even lets you book empty legs by the seat. Just be aware that XO is known for canceling empty legs quite frequently so it's a good idea to have a backup option if your flight is canceled.

XO flights are available to non-members for an additional $395 fee. However, considering entry-level Rise memberships cost just $595 per year, it would make more sense to get one of those if you plan on booking more than two seats per year.

Founder William Herp calls Linear Air an air taxi for regional trips of 700-800 miles, when you don't want to drive and there's no good airline option. On sites like Kayak, he said, "We come up as the only nonstop option between places like New York City and Ithaca or Harrisburg and Bar Harbor, Maine."

The company was founded in 2004 and has grown by more than 1,600% since then. It doesn't own a single plane; like ride-hailing apps, the company partners with operators across the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean. A straightforward interface lets you request departure and arrival airports by inputting a street address or ZIP code. Herp told TPG that the average transaction comes to about $2,000 for a passenger configuration of three to eight seats. "When you fill up the seats and maximize the opportunity, you're talking about $500-$800 per person," or less than many commercial flights.

Bottom line

There are a number of companies offering charter subscriptions and private jet-like experiences for less than you might think. Since there aren't any reasonable ways to book private jet flights with points and miles, be sure to use a credit card that maximizes the return on private jet travel because there are some serious points-earning opportunities here.

The Platinum Card from American Express is generally an excellent option for booking flights. It earns 5 Membership Rewards points per dollar for airfare booked directly with the airline or American Express Travel (on up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year), offers numerous travel protections and now even comes with discounts on Wheels Up. However, private flights often don't code as airfare or even travel at all, so you'll probably be better off using a card with a high return on everyday spending , such as the Chase Freedom Unlimited.

All the Ways to Fly Private, Starting at $100 Per Flight

By Debra Kamin

Private jet travel took off in a big way during the pandemic. Flying private, which has long been viewed as a swanky, sometimes out-of-reach indulgence, suddenly became much more attractive in the era of social distancing. And as a flurry of new players entered the market in response to demand, the prices, long considered sky-high, became more accessible as well.

These days, relaxing in privacy at 35,000 feet no longer requires access to your own personal G5. There are now dozens of options for travelers looking to take to the skies in seclusion, many of them with ticket prices that deliver less sticker shock than you might expect. And the fact that most services operate out of smaller airports and private terminals has become even more appealing since the start of the pandemic, increasing demand.

Air Charter Service, the world's largest private aircraft broker, saw its new clients increase 25 percent in 2021. Many of them made the leap to private because it offered a pathway to reunite with family, says Caitlin Uhlmann, CEO of the company's Chicago office. In 2022, one in four of those first-time clients went on to book again and are now repeat clients.

“Being in the industry over 12 years, I’ve never experienced the wave of new clientele and limited aircraft availability due to demand as I had in the last two years,” Uhlmann says. “It doesn’t seem that private travel will slow down in the near future.”

Learning to navigate the multitude of companies and different categories of private air travel—from fly-share services to fractional ownership—can feel overwhelming. Below is a primer on some of the ways to score a seat on a private aircraft.

Charter open marketplaces

These days, all it takes is a strong Wi-Fi connection (and a handy app or two) to get yourself into a private plane. A number of newer services are connecting fliers directly with charter operators, allowing you to browse, book, and buy within minutes.

JetASAP , a free, self-service app that defines itself as an “Airbnb for air travel,” launched in November 2020, allowing fliers to secure and book private flights directly from their smartphones. There’s a free feature to search in both the app and website, and unlimited access is available for $79.99/month or $399.99/year. Fliers are never required to pay a commission—just punch in a flight request, which includes your airport of departure and preferred flight times. Live operators respond with quotes and can answer any questions, and members get access to an exclusive list of more than 1,000 bookable daily trips.

Another newcomer to the private aviation sphere,  FlyJets  debuted in January 2020. The platform operates like a travel search engine, allowing customers to filter results via their preferred aircraft size, location, and desired departure time. An app, with features including automated scheduling, is set to debut before the end of 2022. Prices can be as much as 50 percent lower than the costs of an average charter, and booking options include full charters, seats on shared charters, and group-purchases. Travelers can even bid on flights that lack a fixed price. They can also earn rewards for flying green, with carbon offsets delivered directly to their user dashboard.

Flyjets enables users to sort results by preferred aircraft size and desired departure time.

Traditional chartering services

If you want to get in the air without strings attached, but need a little more guidance in which plane to choose, charters are a great option. Charter companies work with dozens of private air operators to locate your ideal flight and manage door-to-door logistics, with no long-term commitment required. Many also offer the option to purchase a jet card, which you can load up either with a fixed number of flight hours or with money you spend like a debit card. The field is a crowded one: along with Wheels Up and Blade, there’s also Air Partner, Private Fly, and Jettly, among others.

Founded in 2019, Aero offers white-glove service on a fleet of sleek 16-seater black jets. The company flies to Aspen, Colorado; Los Cabos, Mexico; Sun Valley, Idaho ; Los Angeles (Van Nuys and LAX); San Francisco ; London ; Ibiza; and Nice, France . Flights to Switzerland are coming at the end of 2022. Tickets on most routes run $1,000 per leg.

Blade  is a popular choice for city-based travelers. It connects fliers not just with jets but also turboprops, seaplanes, and helicopters in their contracted fleet via a user-friendly app. Its Blade One planes offer seasonal service from  NYC  to  Miami , Palm Beach, and Aspen. A jaunt from NYC to Miami on BladeOne starts at $2,975 per leg. There's no membership required and fliers can purchase multipacks of flight passes on certain routes.

Founded in 2013,  Wheels Up  provides access to more than 1,500 aircraft, with a fleet that includes gold-standard planes like the King Air 350i and Citation X. Initially, its offerings were only accessible via three tiers of membership. But late last year, it rolled out the Wheels Up app, which also allows non-members to browse and book one-off flights. Wheels Up Connect memberships have a $2,995 initiation fee plus annual dues of $2,495, and rates jump up from there. Core memberships, which cost $17,500 plus $8,500 in annual dues, include guaranteed access to certain tiers of aircraft plus access to bespoke partners like Abercrombie & Kent, Hertz, Tropic Ocean Airways, and more.

Fly-sharing

Fly-share companies are the easiest on the wallet. Companies like Surf Air , and JSX enable travelers to snag a coveted seat on a private jet charter—sometimes for as little as $100 each way—sharing space with only a handful of other passengers and enjoying perks like no security lines and departure from  private terminals . Here's an in-depth  breakdown of popular fly-share operators  and what each one offers.

JSX, a semi-private carrier, offers flights on 30-seat jets, out of private terminals, starting at $249 each way. The company currently serves 18 markets including Austin, Texas ; Los Angeles ; Miami ; and Westchester County, New York. Thanks to a new partnership with United Airlines, travelers can earn United MileagePlus miles for their flights.

Wheels Up The Private Jet Decoder

Wheels Up offers three tiers of membership.

Membership programs

For more frequent fliers, membership programs can be attractive. Through tiered subscription programs, you’ll pay a monthly or annual fee that unlocks access to an entire fleet of aircrafts that can then be booked on demand.

Interest in this company is skyrocketing—new client memberships are at the highest they have ever been, and sales in the first months of 2022 were up 185 percent from the same period in 2021. VistaJet’s fleet of silver and red aircraft includes corporate jets and the long-range Bombardier Global 7500, which has a bedroom and full-size kitchen. Membership options include VistaJet VJ25, a three-year private flight subscription for those who fly between 25 and 49 hours per year.

With a $100 monthly membership fee and one-way flights starting at $750,  Set Jet  is one of the most affordable private air travel options on the market. Founded in 2014, the West Coast-based company currently offers domestic routes from  Los Angeles , San Diego , Orange County, Scottsdale , Las Vegas , San Francisco , and Cabo San Lucas, with seasonal charters to Aspen and Salt Lake City . And it’s growing fast—its fleet of Bombardier aircraft will soon also be taking off from  New York , with expansions into Florida and Texas also in the works. It offers good news for spontaneous travelers, too: Set Jet members can book a new flight up to 24 hours before takeoff and snag a seat on an existing flight up to 30 minutes before wheels go up.

One of the largest private aviation firms globally, XO Members and clients have access to more than 2,450 private jets across cabin classes. Seats or entire charters can be booked via the XO mobile app. XO Shared Membership is $595 per year, reducing the seat price for every booking including flights between New York and South Florida that are now offered up to four times daily, seven days a week.

Sentient Jet

Sentient Jet is the inventor of the Jet Card, which allows users to buy 25 hours of flights at a time and choose the aircraft size that fits their needs. The SJ25 Card offers access to light aircraft at a price of $174,375 for 25 hours; SJ25+ gets you 25 hours on mid, super-mid, and large-cabin jets for $224,622.

Magellan Jets

This Boston -based private aviation provider also offers charters, but an easier entry point is their membership program. Explorer100 Private Jet Members receive fixed-rate pricing across four cabin-size categories. With a starting account of $100,000, members receive a 12-month rate lock, guaranteed WiFi on flights, and long-leg/round-trip discounts.

Fractional ownership

With fractional ownership, your piece of the pie is allocated in hours. Owners purchase a portion or share of an aircraft, which is doled out in hours of flight time. The bigger the share, the more hours you get in the air; and unlike membership programs, it's a one-time investment. Companies like NetJets , the granddaddy of private aviation companies, and Flexjet , whose young fleet includes Embraer's super-light Phenom 300 and the ultra-long-range Gulfstream G450, offer ownership starting at a one-sixteenth interest in an aircraft. Buyers should still be prepared to shell out at least $500,000 and often much more.

Booking Last-Minute Private Jet Flights: Is it Possible?

The general perception of private jet travel frequently emphasizes precise planning and early reservations.

The prevailing consensus is that since private jets are exclusive and scarce, extensive planning is necessary far before the anticipated departure date.

Although this impression is not wholly unfounded, it’s important to realize that private aviation has changed and last-minute private jet bookings are not as unlikely as they might initially seem.

In this article, we will answer the question in your mind about the possibility of booking a last-minute charter on a private jet. You will also learn about the factors influencing last-minute bookings, the challenges, and how to navigate the process.

  • Is It Possible?

The Typical Booking Process for Private Jet Charters

Factors influencing last-minute bookings, challenges of last-minute bookings, charter brokers, the benefits of charter brokers for last-minute bookings, how to utilize charter brokers for last-minute bookings, is it possible.

Yes, it is possible to book a last-minute charter on a private jet.

Private jet travel has traditionally followed a regular schedule, with reservations being made in advance. This approach was not just because private jets were more readily available, but also because a pleasant and stress-free flight experience required careful planning.

There was a widespread misconception that private jets were only available to those who precisely planned their schedules owing to the high demand from business leaders, celebrities, and those wanting personalized travel.

last minute jet tours

But private jet travel has also changed, reflecting the winds of change blowing across other aspects of the travel business. The idea that luxury jet travel is only available to those who book weeks or months in advance is being challenged by technological advancements, changes in traveler expectations, and the growth of charter brokers.

The misconception that private jet travel is only available to individuals with perfectly scheduled schedules has been shattered significantly by the introduction of on-demand private jet charter services. Through the use of technology, these firms match potential passengers with available jets that fit their desired routes and preferences.

This implies that people can locate private jet charters with less notice than was previously thought, much like hailing a ride-share service.

To understand the intricate details at play while thinking about last-minute charters, it is crucial to comprehend the regular private jet trip booking process. Although the procedure may vary significantly depending on service providers, types of aircraft, and charter brokers, the following lists the fundamental procedures involved:

Step 1: Define Your Travel Details

Start by defining your travel details with the necessary information:

  • Start by stating your starting point and final destination. This can include airports in smaller cities more easily accessible than major centers.
  • Indicate the dates and times that you plan to travel. When making private jet charter reservations, flexibility here might boost the likelihood of discovering suitable possibilities.
  • Be sure to specify how many people will be traveling, as this will determine the size and kind of aircraft needed.

Step 2: Choose Your Aircraft

After defining your details, select the perfect private jet that suits your trip:

  • Different types of aircraft may be suggested depending on the number of passengers and the distance being traveled. These might be small jets or bigger cabin planes.
  • If certain interior elements or facilities are significant to you, mention them now. Private aircraft can be tailored to your preferences .

Step 3: Request Quotes

Then request your travel quotes.

  • You can ask charter brokers or operators for quotes directly. Brokers frequently have access to a network of accessible jets, whereas operators are in charge of the aircraft directly.
  • Your quotes will be more accurate the more precise your details are. Don’t forget to give exact departure and arrival times.

Step 4: Compare Options

Evaluate the quotes sent to you as a response to your request by comparing your options.

  • After receiving quotes, evaluate them. Consider the entire cost, including taxes, fees, and any other applicable costs.
  • Pay close attention to the inclusions listed in the pricing quote. While some rates may include gasoline, landing charges, and on-board meals, others may not.

Step 5: Confirm and Arrange

This step demands you to confirm your booking, make payment, and prepare for your flight.

  • Once you’ve decided on a course of action, confirm your reservation. This entails approving a charter contract and supplying the data required for security and flight manifests.
  • Payment conditions vary, but often a down payment is requested up front and the remaining balance is payable before the flight.

Gulfstream G400 Exterior

Step 6: Pre-Flight Preparations

Submit the required details to the airline including your tastes and preferences.

  • For security and manifest purposes, please provide passenger names. For background checks and security clearance, this data is crucial.
  • Let the airline know if you have any special catering requirements or flying preferences.

Step 7: Departure

Get on with your journey and enjoy an exclusive experience.

  • A private terminal apart from the main commercial terminals is the Fixed-Base Operator (FBO) terminal, where you should arrive.
  • Security checks are conducted on passengers and their luggage, and you’ll be led to your flight.

Step 8: Enjoy Your Flight

Once onboard, take advantage of everything private jet charters have to offer. The crew is committed to making sure you are comfortable while traveling.

Step 9: Post-Flight

After your trip, you can enjoy a hassle-free landing at the secret airport terminal .

  • You will be taken to the FBO after landing so you may pick up your baggage .
  • Discuss your experience with the operator or broker.

There are several variables at play when it comes to last-minute charters of private jets, influencing the viability and accessibility of getting a flight on short notice.

Private jet travel has a reputation for exclusivity, but the factors that affect last-minute reservations frequently involve a combination of demand trends, destination considerations, and the kind of available jets.

We go into the complex web of variables in this part that can either support or hinder the pursuit of spontaneity in private jet travel.

Demand and Availability

The complex balancing act between demand and availability is crucial in determining whether booking a flight on short notice is even possible.

Similar to commercial aviation, demand for private jet travel peaks occasionally. These peaks are frequently connected to certain occasions, seasons, or business cycles. Demand for private jet flights may increase during significant athletic events, business conferences, holidays, and even naturally occurring events like high tourist seasons.

Due to the higher demand for available jets at these times, getting a last-minute charter may prove to be more difficult.

Private jet availability is impacted by several factors, including aircraft location, scheduled maintenance , and previous reservations.

Here, the idea of “empty legs”—flights that take place when an aircraft needs to adjust its location after dropping off passengers—comes into play. These empty-leg flights occasionally present exceptional chances for last-minute reservations at a discount.

Destinations and Routes

The destination is important when thinking about last-minute charters. Private jets have the advantage of being able to land at a variety of airports, many of which are not served by commercial airlines; nevertheless, not all destinations are equally reachable in a hurry.

Popular travel destinations with consistent demand and a strong private aviation infrastructure typically have more options for immediate flights.

While last-minute travelers sometimes concentrate on popular places, exploring off-the-beaten-path locations can result in unexpected chances. Charter brokers can find hidden gems that match your trip goals. Less popular airports may have more availability due to lesser demand.

Your chances of locating an available seat might be significantly increased by being flexible with your destination or even the sequence of several stops.

Size and Type of Aircraft

Private jet travel includes a wide range of aircraft, each designed to meet a particular set of travel requirements. Your choice of aircraft size determines the range of locations and the number of passengers you may carry, ranging from light, short-range planes to larger, long-range alternatives.

The flexibility that last-minute travel offers is its main benefit. Due to their adaptability and ability to land at tiny airports, smaller aircraft, such as light jets , frequently have higher availability. These aircraft can be perfect for a quick and hassle-free encounter if your last-minute trip entails a shorter distance and a smaller, more personal group.

Larger cabin jets provide luxury and facilities equivalent to a flying sanctuary for individuals looking for last-minute travel over longer distances. The luxury furnishings, improved facilities, and abundant space may make the trip a true getaway in the skies, even though availability may be more constrained due to demand.

Booking a private jet at the last minute reveals an array of both a possibility and obstacles.

Unavoidably, unplanned travel is appealing, but certain obstacles must be recognized and overcome.

This section explores the difficulties that can arise when chartering a private jet at the last minute and offers advice on how to deal with them.

Cost Considerations

Private jet charter at the last minute frequently has an additional cost. When compared to flights that are scheduled far in advance, there may be a price difference due to the demand for immediate travel and the restricted supply of aircraft.

The premium pricing might also be a result of the availability of private jets, type of jet, and additional services rendered for a last-minute charter.

What you can do is consider flexible travel dates, look at empty-leg opportunities, and work with charter brokers who can assist you with locating cost-effective choices to reduce costs.

Scheduling Conflicts

The suddenness of last-minute travel might also conflict with ongoing obligations and duties.

It takes an artful maneuver to match your desire to travel with your current schedule when you hire a private jet at the last minute. Unexpected travel might mess up your schedule, whether it’s due to family obligations, personal engagements, or work commitments.

Booking a private plane at the last minute necessitates making a rapid decision. Since the window for booking flights can be limited, waiting too long to confirm your trip may cause you to pass up appealing possibilities.

How to Solve Scheduling Conflicts

Mitigating scheduling conflicts requires a combination of strategic planning and adaptability:

  • Communication: If at all feasible, inform the appropriate parties about your anticipated travel arrangements. This might give you time to make changes and the information you need to decide.
  • Prioritize: Set priorities by evaluating the significance of your current obligations. While certain engagements may be able to be changed, others may take priority.
  • Realistic Evaluation: Make a realistic assessment of your timetable. Check to see if adjustments may be made without adding too much stress or interruption.
  • Negotiate: If your obligations at work conflict, try negotiating with your company or clients. Describe the problem and consider your options for handling your obligations.

When it comes to private jet travel, charter brokers serve as invaluable partners, particularly when making last-minute charters.

These experts serve as a bridge between passengers and private jet operators, utilizing their knowledge, contacts in the business, and resources to make trips as easy as possible.

Experts in the private aviation sector known as charter brokers specialize in matching passengers with the best aircraft for their unique needs.

They also have access to a variety of jets and are extremely knowledgeable about routes, availability, and cost.

As touching last-minute private jet charter, charter brokers offer a range of advantages :

  • Access to Options: Brokers can quickly find available jets that meet your travel needs thanks to their vast network of aircraft operators.
  • Insider Insights: Brokers know demand trends, empty leg opportunities, and availability of particular aircraft, increasing your chances of discovering suitable solutions.
  • Efficiency: Getting around the private jet industry can take some time. By providing you with options that match your tastes, charter brokers ease the process.
  • Negotiation: Brokers are competent negotiators who can work on your behalf to obtain advantageous rates and terms.
  • Contact a Reputable Broker: Find charter brokers through research who have a solid track record and good reviews. Make contact with them to go over your last-minute travel arrangements.
  • Provide Details: Make sure to specify your journey dates, destination, number of passengers, and any specialized requirements. The broker can help you more effectively the more details you supply.
  • Compare Options: After the broker has given you your choices, spend some time contrasting the specifics, such as the type of aircraft, the extras, and the cost.
  • Confirm and Prepare: After deciding on a course of action, work with the broker to complete the reservation, supply the required paperwork, and get ready for your trip.

You may not always be able to book your flights in advance. It is quite normal to have a shift in your schedule. But no worries. There is a way out.

With empty-leg flights and Charter Brokers that this article has introduced to you, you can easily make a last-minute charter for your private jet travel.

Also, we included the challenges of a last-minute charter and how to mitigate them to avoid being at a disadvantage. And importantly, this article teaches you how to make your typical private jet trip booking.

We want to ensure every member has an opportunity to fly, so waitlist position is determined by several factors including referrals, the choice to pay for carbon offset credits, and the length of time since your last Vaunt flight. Once a flight's waitlist closes, the member in the #1 position is awarded the opportunity to reserve the entire flight.

Throughout the year, our members are able to join as many waitlists as they’d like. However, as we want to ensure every member has an opportunity to fly, we recommend only joining waitlists for flights you truly want as canceling reserved flights results in lower waitlist priority on your future flights.

Once you’re selected for a flight, our concierge will reach out to coordinate the logistics, including ground transportation and additional passengers.

To cancel your reservation, follow the instructions on your "Trip Details" tab. Please note that canceling a reserved flight results in lower waitlist priority on your future flights.

A one way flight on a private HondaJet can cost between $5,000 and $6,000 per flight hour. (A typical three hour flight would be around $18,000.) And most private jet membership plans start with 25 hour minimums of $100,000.

By opening up repositioning flights to members, our all-inclusive plan unlocks the opportunity to experience private one-way flights, for one annual, flat-fee of $995. That covers the whole plane, up to 4 passengers and the opportunity to reserve as many flights as they want, based on availability and priority.

We recommend booking a commercial flight for your return journey, as all Vaunt flights are currently one-way.

Vaunt flies to premier destinations across the continental United States. While new departure and destination points are added each day, you can view past flights from over the last 12 months at www.flyvaunt.com/flights

When you reserve a flight, the plane is entirely yours. Fly solo or invite your friends, family, and pets (for a total of up to 4 passengers!) aboard for an unforgettable adventure. All for no additional fee.

Vaunt opens up existing “repositioning” flights, which are necessary for bringing jets to their departure destination - and often flown empty. Vaunt’s all-inclusive plan unlocks the opportunity to experience these private one-way flights, all for one annual, flat-fee of $995. And that’s it.

There are no additional hidden costs, baggage, or booking fees here. Due to the nature of these flights, it’s important to note all trips are one-way and generally last minute, with final confirmation happening only 24 hours before departure.

Due to federal aviation regulation, we’re only allowed to indicate if a flight time is in the morning or afternoon. Once you’re selected and confirmed for the flight, we’ll share the exact departure and arrival details.

If the flight is listed to depart in the morning, it can leave any time between 6:00 AM – 11:59 AM EST. If a flight is listed as to depart in the afternoon, it can leave any time between 12:00 PM – 8:00 PM EST.

As part of your annual Vaunt Membership members are able to purchase one Priority Upgrade per year. A Priority Upgrade allows you to jump to the top of the waitlist and secure the #1 position, guaranteeing you the top spot for the flight. If two members wish to use their Priority Upgrade on the same flight, the first member to purchase and use theirs has the priority.

Vaunt is wholly owned by Volato Group which is a leading private aviation operator and publicly listed on the NYSE. Volato has the highest safety ratings being Argus Platinum and IS-BAO Stage 3 rated. Vaunt flights are operated with 2 pilots, and the aircraft have two engines. The current fleet is primarily a new, modern fleet of HondaJets with an average age of under 4 years.

Vaunt’s air carrier operator partners with 4AIR to offer you the opportunity to offset the CO2 on your Vaunt flight. All offset projects, are real, verifiable and audited. On a Vaunt HondaJet flight the offset cost is $12 per flight hour.

Furthermore, the HondaJet is the most fuel efficient aircraft of its class, plus Vaunt’s business model of utilizing empty legs is eliminating wastage and is earth friendly.

A Vaunt membership is an annual membership providing you access to all flights listed in the app. You can express interest by joining any waitlist. There are no restrictions on the number of flights you can take, so members fly as often as they want. There are no per-flight fees, hidden costs, baggage, or booking fees for you or your passengers.

With each annual membership includes the one-time ability to purchase a Priority Upgrade for an additional $995.

Frequently asked questions

What do i need to know before booking a flight.

There are various factors to consider when booking a flight including cost, fare classes, baggage policies, the complications of flying long haul, and complying with airport regulations. To make your booking journey smoother KAYAK has developed a comprehensive flight guide including insights on finding affordable flights, packing efficiently, and utilizing the best travel tools.

Which month of the year are flight prices lowest?

It’s well established that flights in the low season are generally cheaper than ticket prices during the high season. That means that knowing which month to find the lowest priced plane tickets will depend heavily on seasonality and your destination. While avoiding peak travel times can help you keep costs down, our data shows that the month with the lowest priced plane tickets for domestic flights based on all searches made on KAYAK in the last 12 months was January, while the most expensive was March. If you’re booking an international flight, then January is the cheapest month to fly and June the most expensive.

Can flying international flights with a layover save money on airfare?

For many long-haul international flights, flying non-stop is not possible and you will have to fly with a layover. Some routes will offer both and you could consider flying with a layover for a number of reasons. Firstly, breaking up what would otherwise be a long-haul flight, taking a rest and then completing the journey might make the flight more manageable. Secondly, prices can also be lower than non-stop flights, so while it might take longer for you to reach your destination, you could save money. We’ve looked at prices over the last 12 months for the 100 most popular international destinations for KAYAK users and on average, prices for non-stop flights were cheaper than flights with a layover.

How do I find the best flight deals on KAYAK?

A simple flight search at https://www.kayak.com/flights scans for prices on hundreds of travel sites in seconds. We gather flight deals from across the web and put them in one place. Then on the search results page you can use various filters to compare options for the same flight and easily choose the best flight deal from all of the deals coming straight from the travel sites to your screen, with no extra fee from KAYAK.

Yes, KAYAK has access to more data and information than online travel agencies and consistently outperforms the competition in accuracy, globally.

What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you flights up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. That way, you can see if leaving a day or two earlier will find you a better deal. You can also select the flexible "weekend" or "month" search options to widen your search range and find the cheapest price that works for you.

What is the cheapest day of the week to book a flight?

The best day to book your flight depends on a number of factors, but there are general trends that you can follow to increase your chances of cheaper plane tickets. Based on an analysis of KAYAK data for all flights departing from inside United States over the last 12 months, the cheapest day to fly for domestic flights is Tuesday. For international flights, Thursday had the cheapest tickets on average.

Last minute flight deals are definitely up for grabs but when exactly to purchase your plane tickets will depend on where you’re traveling to and from. Based on all data for flight searches made on KAYAK over the last 12 months, prices for domestic flights remained below the average price up to 1 weeks before departure. For international flights, deals could still be had up to 1 weeks prior to the departure date, with prices remaining below average. If you’re flexible, KAYAK brings you both advance and last minute one-way and round-trip flight deals.

How does KAYAK find such low flight prices?

KAYAK processes over 2 billion flight queries annually and displays results from hundreds of airlines and third party sites, allowing it to find a variety of flight prices and options. It also displays results from 2M+ properties along with rental cars, vacation packages, activities and millions of verified reviews so users can see as many available travel options as possible.

On the way to the snorkeling spot, a pod of dolphins with a baby! As usual, they seemed to be curious about us as well. The snorkeling was good enough for a windy Key West day. See what’s fueling the return of supersonic passenger flights

More than two decades after the concorde’s last flight, several private companies are competing to bring supersonic travel to the masses.

In January, more than 100 people gathered at an airplane hangar in California to watch NASA unveil its X-59 demonstrator jet — a futuristic aircraft designed to travel faster than the speed of sound that has helped revive excitement for supersonic travel.

There hasn’t been a commercial supersonic passenger jet since the Concorde stopped flying in 2003. Since then, supersonic jets — which travel faster than the speed of sound — have been used primarily by the military. But the space agency’s unveiling of the X-59, designed and built in partnership with Lockheed Martin, comes as a growing number of private companies are vying to bring back supersonic travel for the commercial market.

Boom, Exosonic and Spike are among the companies promising modern supersonic travel that will be quieter, greener and more affordable than in the past. And at least one company — Hermeus — is exploring hypersonic flights, which would whisk passengers from New York to London in 90 minutes. But there are questions about whether these companies can make good on their claims given the economics of air travel and growing concerns about the impact of commercial aviation on the environment.

Here are five things to know about the effort to revive supersonic travel.

1. The sonic ‘boom’ could become a ‘soft thump’

NASA’s goal in developing the X-59 is to reduce the sonic boom — the thunder clap that resonates far and wide when an aircraft crosses the sound barrier. NASA scientists hope the demonstrator jet can prove that travel at supersonic speeds is possible without such earsplitting noise.

One key to quieting the boom comes from the plane’s design. The engine is mounted on top. The plane has a long, narrow nose and sculpted wing to help ensure the shock waves it creates as it speeds through the air are similar in strength and evenly spaced along the aircraft to create a gradual increase in pressure instead of the rapid jump that creates the loud bang, said Peter Coen, mission integration manager for the Quesst mission.

The sonic boom is around 105 PLdB, or perceived level of decibels, similar to that of the sound of a balloon popping next to you. In comparison, NASA says the X-59’s will sound closer to a car door slamming 20 feet away.

Turning the boom into a “soft thump,” as NASA hopes, could also improve the economics for commercial supersonic flights. It could mean an end to the U.S. ban on supersonic travel over land, which was enacted over noise concerns. That in turn could make commercial supersonic travel financially viable because airlines would be able to fly supersonic planes to more destinations.

Designing and building the X-59 took roughly five years. Testing is underway, and other phases of the project are expected to take another four. The total projected cost is $839 million, according to NASA.

2. There’s a flurry of interest from private companies

Nearly a half a dozen companies are competing to be the first to offer supersonic travel to the public — a curious interest at a time when much investment and innovation in transportation is focused on developing cleaner, more climate-friendly options that consume less fuel or alternative propulsion technologies such as batteries or hydrogen.

Denver-based Boom Supersonic is eyeing 2029 for the debut of its supersonic passenger jet, called Overture. The aircraft is expected to seat 64 to 80 passengers, according to Blake Scholl, the company’s chief executive. It will travel at Mach 1.7, or 1.7 times the speed of sound — more than twice as fast as a regular passenger airplane .

One company, Aerion — which had backing from major players in the industry including Boeing and Lockheed Martin to build a supersonic business jet — has already bowed out of the race. It shut down in 2021, unable to secure the funding to continue it work.

Industry analysts say venture capital and the mind-set that commercial supersonic sounds like a good idea has largely fueled the revival.

“It’s that Silicon Valley mentality that you put money down on 20 things for one that does well,” said Richard Aboulafia, managing director at AeroDynamic Advisory. “Again, it sounds like a good idea. There’s a good market for air transport and people want to fly fast. We had Concorde in the past so it sounds right — so let’s put some money there.”

Bruce McClelland, a senior contributing analyst at aerospace and defense industry analysis firm the Teal Group, added, “A lot of projects attract money whether they’re completely viable or not.”

3. It promises sustainability

Companies say their new generation of supersonic jets will have a smaller carbon footprint, mostly because they will be fueled by sustainable aviation fuel. This is fuel is made from agricultural products including soybeans and animal fat.

But critics say that pledge ignores some significant realities. For instance, there isn’t enough sustainable aviation fuel for planes that exist today. The sustainable aviation fuel that does exist is more expensive — by some estimates two to four times the cost of fossil fuel.

And no matter the fuel, the reality is supersonic jets will always use more of it. According to a 2022 study by International Council on Clean Transportation, supersonic jets could use seven to nine times as much fuel as regular commercial aircraft while carrying fewer passengers. But NASA’s Coen contends that supersonic travel at least initially will be a very small part of overall CO2 emissions and a very small part of commercial aviation.

Even so, with airlines pledging to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, some say it’s hard to understand how supersonic jets fit into that framework.

4. It could be affordable for more people

The Concorde ended service because only a small slice of the flying public could ever afford a ticket, among other reasons, including a 2000 crash that killed 113 people and grounded Concorde’s supersonic planes for a year. But today’s entrepreneurs say supersonic travel can be affordable — though maybe not at first.

They point to Tesla and the burgeoning space tourism sector as an example of new modes of transportation that have and could eventually become accessible to a growing segment of the population.

Analysts have their doubts, though, given how difficult it is for commercial airlines to stay afloat. Supersonic jets will carry fewer passengers and consume greater quantities of fuel. If that fuel is sustainable aviation fuel, those costs increase even more.

“Essentially, the faster you fly, the more fuel you are burning per mile,” said Iain Boyd, director of the Center for National Security Initiatives at the University of Colorado at Boulder. “Supersonic is always going to be more expensive.”

5. It could get even faster

Hermeus, based in Atlanta is just one of the companies exploring the possibility of an even faster, hypersonic commercial passenger jet. While supersonic aircraft travel faster than the speed of sound, hypersonic aircraft travel at speeds five times faster or more.

Translated: that would make a flight between New York and London — a 90-minute trip — about the same as flying from New York to D.C. on today’s commercial aircraft.

The company’s Halcyon jet would travel at Mach 5 — or five times the speed of sound. A.J. Piplica, the company’s chief executive, said the company is laying the groundwork for Halcyon by building hypersonic drones that could be used for defense and national security purposes.

But the company is open about the technological challenges it faces developing such a fast aircraft. Today, there’s a less than 50 percent chance of getting Halcyon in the air, Piplica says — but he expects the odds to improve over time.

Even then, Hermeus — and all the start-ups — will have to convince the public to buy in and will have to grapple with growing concern about the impact of air travel on the environment. It could be a tall order.

8 Incidents in 2 Weeks: What’s Going on With United’s Planes?

While no one was injured, most of the mishaps required emergency landings or diversions. One safety expert said the incidents were not the result of “systemic problems.”

Two blue-and-white commercial airplanes with the word “United” painted on their sides sit on the tarmac at an airport.

By Christine Chung

An engine fire sparked by plastic packaging wrap , a tire lost shortly after takeoff and a plane veering off the runway : These are among the eight incidents that have occurred over the past two weeks on flights operated by United Airlines. While no injuries — or worse — have been reported, the mishaps have generated headlines and stoked rising anxiety about aviation safety among federal officials and passengers alike.

All of the incidents happened on flights that took off from or were headed to airports in the United States, and five involved airplanes made by Boeing, a manufacturer already under intense scrutiny. In January, a door plug blew out of an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 Max 9 jetliner in mid-flight, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing.

United, one of the world’s largest airlines, flies aircraft manufactured mainly by Boeing and Airbus. In an email United began sending to customers on Monday, the company’s chief executive, Scott Kirby, wrote that while the recent incidents were unrelated, they were “reminders of the importance of safety.”

“I want you to know that these incidents have our attention and have sharpened our focus,” he continued, adding that every case was being reviewed by the airline and would influence its safety training and procedures.

Here’s what travelers should know about the latest in airplane woes.

What exactly happened on or to the planes?

Most of the incidents reported in the last two weeks required emergency landings or diversions.

March 4: A Boeing 737-900 departing from George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston returned to the airport to make an emergency landing after one of the plane engines ingested and burned plastic wrap .

March 7: A Boeing 777 leaving San Francisco for Osaka, Japan, made an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport after the aircraft lost a tire .

March 8: A Boeing 737 Max 8 veered off the runway upon landing at George Bush Airport in Houston and tilted onto the grass .

Later that day, a flight leaving San Francisco for Mexico City was diverted to Los Angeles after the Airbus A320 experienced issues with its hydraulic system.

March 9: An Airbus A320 heading to Salt Lake City turned back to Chicago O’Hare International Airport after it reported maintenance issues .

March 11: A Boeing 777, flying from Sydney, Australia , to San Francisco, turned back after takeoff because the plane had a hydraulic leak.

March 14: An Airbus A320 that departed from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport had a hydraulic leak shortly before it landed in its scheduled destination, San Francisco.

Later that day, a Boeing 737-800 that took off from San Francisco landed at Rogue Valley International Medford Airport in Oregon missing an external panel .

Are the recent issues typical, or cause for concern?

The mishaps were not the result of “systemic problems,” said Robert Sumwalt, a former chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board who now heads a new aviation safety center at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

“Some of these issues are things that happen occasionally, but often don’t get reported in media,” Mr. Sumwalt said, though he emphasized that none were acceptable.

Kyra Dempsey, who writes about aviation accidents in a blog called Admiral Cloudberg, said that United’s recent issues were being “falsely conflated with Boeing’s troubles.”

“While it’s bad luck that United had so many incidents in such a short period, in general such incidents happen frequently around the world and they aren’t on the rise overall,” Ms. Dempsey said.

How has United responded?

Mr. Kirby’s 270-word message to United customers, including to members of the airline’s frequent flier program, started to be sent on Monday morning, said Josh Freed, a spokesman for United.

Starting in May, United pilots will have an extra day of in-person training, a change that was already planned before the incidents, Mr. Kirby wrote. The airline will also use a “centralized training curriculum for our new hire maintenance technicians” and will dedicate additional resources to the carrier’s supply chain.

What government agencies oversee these issues, and how are they responding?

The Federal Aviation Administration regulates the country’s aviation system and investigates safety incidents on U.S. airlines, while the N.T.S.B. investigates the causes of accidents, collisions and crashes involving planes flown by U.S. carriers, in addition to other accidents involving commercial and mass transit operators. Both agencies have discretion on what they investigate, Mr. Sumwalt said.

Currently, the N.T.S.B. is investigating the incident that occurred on March 8 in Houston, when the plane veered off the runway, an agency spokesperson said. The N.T.S.B. is also looking into a Feb. 10 Los Angeles-to-Newark flight , operated by United, that experienced severe turbulence, leading to injuries among more than a dozen passengers. (The Boeing 777 landed normally, but the flight was met by medical personnel.)

Safety experts said some issues don’t necessarily rise to the level of an investigation by either agency.

For example, partial loss of some of an airplane’s multiple hydraulics systems is common, said Michael McCormick, an assistant professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and a former F.A.A. control tower operator. The F.A.A. may or may not get involved for this kind of issue, unless there’s a pattern, Mr. Sumwalt said.

The January episode involving the blown door plug aboard the Alaska Airlines jet is under investigation by the N.T.S.B. and the Justice Department.

Boeing: A Company in Turmoil

Boeing is weathering a particularly difficult period: two fatal crashes, a loose panel that blew out during a flight, quality concerns and production slowdowns..

United’s Planes : An engine fire sparked by plastic packaging wrap, a tire lost shortly after takeoff and a plane veering off the runway: These are among several incidents that have occurred over two weeks  on Boeing flights operated by United Airlines.

Alaska Airlines Flight 1282: After a section of a plane headed for Ontario, Calif., blew out  10 minutes after it took off , there was increased scrutiny  on the plane’s manufacturer: Boeing . The Justice Department has since launched a criminal investigation .

Quality Control Issues: An audit that was initiated by the Federal Aviation Administration after the Alaska Airlines incident found dozens of problems  throughout Boeing’s manufacturing process and one of its key suppliers.

Whistleblower’s Death: John Barnett, a former quality manager for the company, was found dead in Charleston  in March with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was set to testify in a lawsuit in which he accused Boeing of retaliation for his complaints about quality and safety.

At Fault: A report released in February by the Federal Aviation Administration said that Boeing’s safety culture remains flawed , despite improvements made after two fatal crashes  in 2018 and 2019.

Solving an Enduring Crisis: The Federal Aviation Administration has asked Boeing to produce an action plan  to address quality control issues. We asked experts how Boeing should try and fix its longstanding problems .

A braking system ‘anomaly’ caused an American Airlines jet to exceed a Dallas runway, NTSB says

An American Airlines jetliner that suffered an “anomaly” in the braking system before running past the end of a runway in Texas last month had undergone a brake-replacement job four days earlier, U.S. investigators said Thursday.

An inspection showed that flexible hydraulic lines to parts of the braking system on the Boeing 737 had been improperly reconnected, the National Transportation Safety Board said in a preliminary report on the Feb. 10 incident at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

American said in a statement that it is cooperating with investigators and safety is the airline’s top priority.

The NTSB said that within moments of the plane touching down on the runway, the automatic brakes went from off to on and then off again. The pilots used brake pedals and thrust reversers to slow down, but as the plane neared the end of the runway, the captain of American flight 1632 warned air traffic controllers.

“Total brake failure. We are departing the end of runway 17L (for left). Roll crash fire rescue,” the captain said.

The plane came to rest on a paved area beyond the runway. The 104 passengers and crew members were bused to the terminal.

The NTSB said that four days before the runway incident, American replaced steel brakes on the main landing gears with carbon brakes and wheel assemblies, based on 2016 instructions from Boeing.

The work required disconnecting flexible hydraulic hoses and reconnecting them. An inspection following the event on the Dallas runway showed that two of the lines “had been improperly reconnected” after the brake job, according to the preliminary report.

Wiring to one of the main landing gears also had been installed incorrectly, the NTSB said.

The safety board said its investigation was continuing.

The plane was built in 2009. It is an earlier version of the Boeing 737 than the Max.

Meet an 'airline nepo baby' — he's flown for free since birth, gets upgraded to business class, and books last-minute trips to Tokyo and Sydney

  • Joshua Crawford, who calls himself an "airline nepo baby," has flown for free his entire life.
  • He gets access to travel perks because his father has worked for United Airlines for 30 years.
  • Crawford, 23, books spur-of-the-moment international trips and often gets free cabin upgrades.

Insider Today

Step aside, Hollywood, there's a new nepo baby in town.

Joshua Crawford, a 23-year-old who works at a grocery store in LA and recently graduated from college with a degree in marketing, calls himself an "airline nepo baby." The son of an employee who has worked for United Airlines for over 30 years, Crawford can fly for free, get upgraded to business class, and book last-minute vacations to destinations like Tokyo.

Crawford shared a glimpse of the travel perks he enjoys in a February 28 TikTok that has over 4.8 million views.

Rules for relatives of employees vary from airline to airline. At United Airlines, children of airline employees usually lose their privileges when they turn 26. But that won't apply to Crawford, as he's listed as his father's primary companion.

"I'm very grateful for that," he said.

Flying on standby isn't as risky as you'd think

In 2016, Crawford started to realize how lucky he was when planning a trip to Coachella, the music festival held in the California desert.

According to Google Flights, flights to Los Angeles or Palm Springs from New Jersey, where Crawford grew up, can run as much as $450 roundtrip — a price he and his sister didn't have to consider.

"We have an aunt that lives in California, so we just stayed at her house," he said. "We were like, 'Wow, all we have to do is pay for the wristband, and we're going to Coachella.'"

Crawford flies for free domestically because he travels on standby, meaning he doesn't have a seat assigned until close to the flight's departure time.

Crawford said he doesn't always get on the flights he wants. There are times he's had to wait at a gate for a later, emptier flight when previous ones were fully booked.

But Crawford maintains that those situations rarely arise because he's learned to avoid certain routes and major airports during high-peak travel seasons.

Instead of flying direct from LA to New York during the December holidays, Crawford usually does a layover in Denver to ensure he gets a seat.

"If you learn your route, essentially, you will realize you have a lot of other options," he said.

It also doesn't hurt that Crawford's dad is privy to handy behind-the-scenes information like how many seats are left open on flights months before departure.

Related stories

"I'm usually not enlisting on a flight where I have a high chance of being booted off to the next one," he said. "It also really depends on your seniority with the company. My dad's been with United for quite some time now, so I'm definitely a higher priority — and very grateful for my father."

Last-minute jet-setting to destinations like Sydney, Tokyo, and Paris

These days, Crawford takes longer-haul trips — often without much pre-planning. He can book anytime, though he said he isn't given an "official" reservation until around a month before travel.

Over the past year, Crawford said he's booked last-minute trips to destinations including Japan, Australia, and Europe.

"I went to Australia a couple of months ago by myself," he said. "I did like a little solo trip, and I probably planned that about two weeks before I went."

More recently, Crawford said, he celebrated his birthday with a quick trip to Paris booked just a week before takeoff.

Crawford does have to pay taxes when he books flights out of the country. However, they're normally a fraction of the cost of the ticket.

"It depends on the country," he said. "For example, I was leaving Japan, and it was like $70 to get back home."

Perks extend to business-class upgrades

Paying almost nothing to fly isn't the only benefit Crawford gets as an airline nepo baby.

Given how long his father has worked for United, Crawford said he's also a high priority when free upgrades to business class are available.

Known as Polaris , the premium cabins feature spacious pods with seats that can be turned into lie-flat beds and amenities like eye serums, facial sprays, and hand creams.

According to Crawford, the upgrades help alleviate his jet lag.

"I flew to Sydney from LA, and that was about a 16-hour flight. There and back, I was in Polaris," he said. "There's such a big difference when you're in that economy middle seat versus when you've got upgraded on your flight."

As a recent college grad, he said he couldn't afford to fly business class otherwise.

"Round-trip prices for business-class tickets for a long-haul flight can range upwards of $15,000," Crawford said. "Coming out of college — as someone who has student debt and is trying to find a job — it's crazy to me. $15,000 — I could do so much with that."

In his TikTok, Crawford also said he breezes past security and immigration when he leaves and reenters the US.

Speaking to BI, he said these benefits — Global Entry and TSA PreCheck — weren't "completely free," but he got a discount on the application fee (normally $100) because of his dad's job.
