Netherlands Cruise Holidays

Netherlands cruise holiday highlights.

Only have time for a short break ? No need to feel short-changed when you have a country as delightful as the Netherlands practically on your doorstep. It has everything you could want for a city stopover: shopping, gorgeous architecture, beautiful gardens and flower markets, a fabulous café culture – and, of course, canals. And did we mention the windmills, beer and cheese, and a wealth of truly wondrous art? Try to squeeze in a visit to at least one of the following: the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum (with works by Picasso, Cézanne, Matisse and Monet) or the Rijksmuseum (masterpieces by Rembrandt, Frans Hals and Vermeer).

  • The Netherlands is home to 1,000 working windmills.
  • The Dutch people are officially the tallest in the world.
  • The highest point in the Netherlands is just 1,000 feet above sea level.
  • The Netherlands is the largest beer exporter in the world.
  • Rembrandt, Vermeer and Van Gogh all hailed from the Netherlands.

Explore the Netherlands on a cruise holiday

Amsterdam's Museum Quarter is well worth a visit. Waves of masterpieces can be found in one walkable stretch. From Rembrandt to Van Gogh, to Banksy and Matisse, there's plenty to see between the Rijksmusem, Moco, Stedelijk and Van Gogh museums.

The Aalsmeer Flower Auction is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to observe the inner workings of the world's largest flower trading centre. You'll have a bird's-eye view over trading, where 19 million flowers are bought and sold daily.

Why not soak up the sights on a canal boat ride? Take a seat on a glass-topped boat and enjoy a unique glide through Amsterdam's UNESCO listed waterways. You'll sail through the ages, passing monuments like the Maritime Museum, Town Hall and the house in which Anne Frank wrote her famous diary.

The Netherlands

Our river Cruises in the Netherlands

The Netherlands, or the land of flowers, is one of those places where life is good. People are simply happy and live peacefully in their serene and quiet cities, as calm as the waters that cross them.

During a stay in Holland must see the cities governed and shaped by water, where canals intersect and intermingle in a sumptuous maze.

Amsterdam , the capital city is called “ The Venice of the North ”, the numerous canals, picturesque streets, museums and various curiosities give it a sweet and captivating atmosphere. The omnipresence of water gives the city its essence as its philosophy: taking time.

A truly romantic capital and destination cherished by millions, Amsterdam has so much to offer: its museums, its culture, its neighbourhoods. But above all its atmosphere that, more than anything else, allows its visitors to contemplate and which no single word or image can depict. It is a destination where everyone comes together without fear of displaying any traits that differ from the so called “norm”.

It is during a cruise on the Rhine or the Ijsselmeer that you will visit this striking capital, before continuing your journey in the Netherlands amongst the tulips . You will discover "The Flat Country" from the waters that define it and you will venture to Volendam , a charming fishing village at the edge of the Ijsselmeer where the inhabitants are still sometimes dressed in traditional costumes.

You will also see Rotterdam , the "Port of Europe" with its spectacular dimensions and which is constantly buzzing with life.

You will visit a cheese factory to discover the making of the famous Dutch round cheese: Gouda . A visit to Zaanse Schans , an open-air museum, will introduce you to how the famous Dutch wooden clogs are made and their history dating back to the year 1200!

Giethoorn: Venice of the Netherlands

After a coach journey of approximately one hour with a talk from your local guide along the way, you’ll arrive in the car-free village of Giethoorn. With no roads to continue on and many waterways to admire, it’s then time to board the canal cruiser for a tour by water.

As you cruise along, you will enjoy sights of 18th and 19th-century farmhouses hidden between the trees and wooden bridges. You will also learn about daily life in Giethoorn as you are guided by a local skipper.

Walking Grade 2

Please note:  Standing and walking on this tour is at your discretion, except for the distance between the canal boat to the coach parking and the coach to your ship on your return which could be up to 150 yards in total. There are several steps to embark and disembark the canal boat.

Giethoorn

  • Included on 5 nights itinerary

Keukenhof Gardens

After a coach transfer from your ship you will arrive at Keukenhof Gardens. Regarded by many as 'the most beautiful spring garden in the world', Keukenhof is in bloom from late March to early May, as every autumn a dedicated team plants over seven million spring flowering bulbs to create a striking display for visitors.

2024 is going to be an exceptional year for the gardens and the hard-working team behind them as they celebrate their 75th anniversary with a commemorative season, including a very special anniversary exhibition.

As you explore at your leisure following paths lined with flowers, look out for the various sculptures and statues which create an interesting contrast against the floral backdrop. You may even pick up some design ideas for your garden back home!

Walking Grade 3

Please note:  As exploration of Keukenhof Gardens is independent, walking is at your discretion, but we suggest you should expect to walk approximately one mile to maximise your experience in the gardens. The venue comprises of a combination of flat, accessible paths and more uneven ground/grass. There are benches at regular intervals around the gardens. As Keukenhof Gardens is such a popular attraction, traffic delays are possible during your coach transfers. Cafes and shops within the gardens only accept credit or debit card and do not accept cash. Manual wheelchairs are available to rent from the ticket shop (subject to availability).

Canals of Amsterdam

After a short walk, either from your ship or following a short coach journey depending on your ship's mooring, you’ll embark a glass-topped sightseeing boat for a tour along Amsterdam’s historic canals.

Once the hub of the city’s commercial life, the canals are lined with houses that were originally workshops and stores. As you sail you can learn more about the city’s rich history and its connection to the waterways for which it is famous.

Please note: Expect to walk approximately 550 yards in total over flat ground with the possibility of cobblestones. During this excursion there is a total standing and/or walking time of approximately 15 minutes. There are several steps to access the pontoon where you board the canal cruise boat and several steps on and off the boat itself.

Hoorn Walking Tour

On this guided walk you will explore the pretty town of Hoorn, set on the Markermeer lake and steeped in maritime history. It has an attractive harbour, which you will see during your walk. Hoorn experienced its heyday in the 17th century, when it was one of the most important centres for the Dutch East India Company. As a result of its early seafaring wealth, the town boasts many historic buildings, notably the State Council building with its decorative stone facade. After your tour you may choose to stay in Hoorn and explore further independently or you can return with your guide to the ship.

Walking Grade 4

Please note: Expect to walk approximately one-and-a-quarter miles in total over flat ground with the possibility of cobblestones. This excursion has a total standing and/or walking time of approximately 90 minutes.

Rijksmuseum Visit

After a short coach transfer from your ship, you will arrive at the Rijksmuseum, in the heart of Amsterdam’s Museum Square. Here you will see the works of 17th-century Dutch masters such as Rembrandt, Vermeer and Hals.

The museum, designed by Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers, has been housed in the Rijksmuseum building since 1885 and is now one of the most visited museums in the world. You can explore the museum independently at your own pace with an audio guide commentary. A return coach transfer will be provided.

Please Note: Standing and/or walking on this tour is mostly at your discretion over level terrain. However, you should expect to walk approximately one mile to make the most of your visit. Some steps may also be necessary depending on your chosen route; however, a lift is available if required.

3½ hours

Edam and Katwoude Cheese Farm

This excursion takes you to a traditional cheese-making farmhouse in the village of Katwoude, approximately a 30-minute drive from the centre of Amsterdam. Here, you’ll enjoy a demonstration of the craft of making cheese and will also have the opportunity to taste the product for yourself.

Next, take a tour through the barn to see the farm's herd of organic Jersey cows, before some free time to browse the quirky farm shop for souvenirs. Then, you will head to Edam, one of the Netherland’s best-preserved towns. It’s notably famous for its red-waxed cheese. Enjoy a short walking tour through the pretty streets and visit the Edam cheese weigh house before returning to your ship.

Please Note: Expect to walk approximately one-and-a-half miles over terrain which will be cobbled and uneven at times, and will include some steps. There is a total walking and/or standing time of approximately two hours. This excursion may run in reverse. This tour is not suitable for those with animal related allergies.

Cruises to The Netherlands

Netherlands

What to see in amsterdam.

The wonderfully historic capital of the Netherlands is one of the most culture-rich destinations in Europe, with its seventeenth-century buildings, snaking canals and some more unusual attractions like the Red Light District.

What to do when you first arrive on your Amsterdam cruise? You can hire a bike and ride around the city’s winding canals, of course. Many parts of the Dutch capital are incredibly beautiful and you’ll want to take in as much of the city as possible during your stay. Come lunchtime, Vondelpark makes for a great picnic spot and even offers free open-air concerts during the summer season.

Museumplein (Museum Square) is the cultural hub of the city and where you’ll find many of Amsterdam’s major museums and art galleries. Head to the Van Gogh Museum for the largest collection of the post-impressionist painter’s work. You’ll get to see masterpieces such as Sunflowers and The Potato Eaters, as well as works by Picasso and Monet. Make sure you also visit the majestic Rijksmuseum as part of your cruise to Amsterdam – where you can admire Rembrandt’s The Night Watch and Vermeer’s The Milkmaid.

Amsterdam features the world’s only floating flower market, the Bloemenmarkt. A feast of colours and scents, the Bloemenmarkt is an essential part of any visitor’s cruise holiday to the city. Buy a bouquet for your accommodation or take some bulbs to plant at home.

With so many museums, the Dutch capital offers plenty of opportunities to learn something new on an Amsterdam cruise . The ship-shaped NEMO Science Museum offers fun for all the family, while Verzetsmuseum (The Resistance Museum) offers a unique insight into the covert operations of the Resistance Movement during World War II. For a truly memorable and profound experience, visit Anne Frank House – the house where Anne and her family went into hiding for two years when the Nazis occupied the Netherlands.

When in Amsterdam, don’t miss the spectacular Royal Concertgebouw. This beautiful concert hall has hosted performances by some of the world’s most revered international artists and musicians. On Wednesdays, the venue hosts free lunchtime concerts lasting around 30 minutes.

Holland is familiar and exotic at the same time, but there’s one thing the whole world knows: the Dutch had to fight to win back their land from the water, driving back the sea and digging out amazing canals in its character towns.

A canal boat cruise is the best way to discover the real Holland

Boat hire in Holland makes an ideal holiday if you’re a fan of windmills, artists and flowers… and of course boats! Exploring the area by canal boat gives you the chance to take in this land of sailors, which was once the commercial powerhouse of the entire world. A cruise through Holland’s waterways is a really special experience, which you can round off with a weekend in Amsterdam or Utrecht to enjoy some cultural heritage. Step on board your no-license boat to explore Holland at the easy pace of the canals: you’ll discover a fascinating region, known for its tolerance as well as its passion for rivers and canals, not to mention its love of flowers, which you can see on show at the famous Keukenhof tulip garden, the biggest in the world. Holland has been a source of inspiration for some of the greatest artists, including Van Gogh, Vermeer and Rembrandt, and there’s a huge range of museums and galleries to visit. Along your route, you’ll uncover local mysteries as you explore the wonderful canals and landscaped lakes. And this is the perfect place to enjoy some watersports and outdoor activities, such as fishing or canoeing, stand up paddle boarding, and of course swimming. The colourful scenes you encounter will make your Dutch cruise an experience you’ll never forget.

When someone mentions Holland, do you think of windmills, romantic canals, delicious cheeses and huge fields of tulips? Well if that’s on your wish list, you won’t be disappointed

Amsterdam’s museums, a must!

When you opt for boat hire in Holland, a trip to Amsterdam is a must. The city is known throughout the world for its cultural heritage and has a wide range of museums and galleries on both sides of the canals. Lose yourself in the immensity of the Rijksmuseum and Rembrandt’s chiaroscuros, stand dumbstruck in front of the astonishing NEMO, designed by the architect Renzo Piano, or feel a shiver as you enter Anne Frank’s house. It difficult to choose between them; impossible to forget them.

Zaanse Schans and its thousands of windmills

This quaint little village, nestling in the heart of Zandaam, is windmill heaven. Spice-mills, oil-mills, all kinds of mills… Tour the ground floor and then climb up to enjoy the amazing views.

Keukenhof’s flower power

Keukenhof owes its name to its 15th-century role as the herb market for the castles (it means ‘kitchen courtyard’), but today it’s known as one of the most beautiful gardens in the world, spreading over 32 hectares in an explosion of colours and scents arranged in themed sections: a really inspiring sight.

5 cheese markets including Gouda’s

At the meeting of two rivers – the Hollandsche Ijssel and the Gouwe – the town of Gouda gives centre stage to its famous cheese at a typical market (one of the five most famous of its kind). This is a wonderful event where farmers from the region barter in the traditional way, dressed in period costumes.

The Oudegracht Canal, the place to be for brunch in Utrecht

From the town centre, head to the Oudegracht Canal and experience the buzz of one of the liveliest districts in the Netherlands, with a whole row of bars and restaurants along the banks. Grab a table and enjoy yourself!

Boat hire in Holland gives you access to a superb network of waterways

Boat hire in Holland gives you access to a superb network of waterways, where every day on your canal boat will bring new, varied and vivid experiences.

Boating holidays and waterways are what this region is all about: it’s criss-crossed by a network of small canals. When you rent a boat in Holland, you can choose from a range of themed routes, which means everyone can find an aspect of the region that interests them. You could discover gourmet Holland on your self-drive boat, cruise through unspoilt natural landscapes, or sample the high culture of cities like Amsterdam, or all of the above…

One thing is certain: Holland isn’t lacking in culture. This was once the home of famous painters, so the region has a wide range of galleries, mainly in Amsterdam and Utrecht, which are considered Holland’s cultural treasure-houses. Whatever aspect of Holland you’re dreaming about, there’s nothing to stop you getting away from it all and making that dream come true: you can cruise all of Holland’s waterways on a no-license boat and they’re all perfect for first-timers. Boat hire in Holland means soaking up the region’s really special atmosphere, with tulips and windmills along the banks, enjoying a peaceful and magical voyage that can also be a gourmet experience. Whether you’re taking in the scenery from your canal boat or exploring dry land, maybe on a bike – because it’s heaven for cyclists too – everything here seems a little bit exotic, even though it’s not far away.

Discover the best boating holidays in Holland

Where to begin your boating adventure in the netherlands.

When you begin your river cruises in the Netherlands , you’ll find that there is a huge choice of starting points. As a nation crossed by a huge network of canals and rivers, the Netherlands has seemingly endless routes to take. All of these different routes wind through the Dutch countryside and pass through major cities such as Amsterdam, Utrecht and The Hague. As a low country, with a low water table, canals spill out in every direction, making it one of the best countries to travel via its waterways. Most people choose to start boating through Holland from its largest city, Amsterdam.

Amsterdam itself is a maze of canals that network across the entire city, allowing you to visit every nook and cranny that its streets have to offer. Mooring in the city centre is easy, and it offers plenty of places to settle your boat while you explore. The canals move off in many different directions, allowing you to plan a route in any direction. Whether this is south-west towards The Hauge, south-east towards Uterect or north into North Holland, the choice is yours. Owing to the country’s flat topography, it is quite easy to bike and barge through the Netherlands without stepping foot on a road. Simply barge along the canal waterways to your desired destination.

Steering your Holland boat rental south

One of the most natural paths to take is the route south that leads out of Amsterdam. Winding through the southern suburbs of the city, you will soon come to the rolling countryside that Holland and the wider Netherlands is famed for. This canal region south of Amsterdam is also known for its many lakes, mixed with iconic windmills; this is one of the most pleasant canal routes in Holland. Your boat trip from Amsterdam will make its way from the north and pass through the town of Loosdrecht. Loosdrecht is an ideal pitstop destination along the canal route and is also a great halfway point. The town itself is famous for its surrounding lakes and dikes, fitting perfectly with the rolling green countryside that also blends in.

Boaters can easily make their way into the town by mooring at the city centre dockyard, which is also home to a Locaboat’s base. This being the case, many canal holidays in Holland can be also started from here. Getting onto dry land at Loosdrecht means you can wander through the town and see its many sights. One of Loosdrecht’s most visited sites is the Castle-Museum Sypesteyn. This former late 19th century stately home designed by famous Dutch architect, Henri van Sypesteyn, is easily accessed from the banks of the canal. When navigating the canal route southernly Dutch waterways cruises tend to end in the city of Utrecht. Not only is this a great location to end your southerly journey, but it also has its own series of attractions to explore.

Your canal boat trip in Holland heads west

Rather than taking the southerly route out of Amerstdam, taking your Holland canal boat rental westwardly is just as, if not more so, rewarding. This westerly route takes boaters out of the suburbs of the Dutch capital and into the interior of Holland. As it winds through southern Holland, holidaymakers will pass through the towns of Aalsmeer, Leiden and finally another of The Netherlands most famous cities, The Hague.

Starting out from Amerstdam, the canal first meanders westerly and flows to the town of Aalsmeer. Aalsmeer is a great first stopping point once you rent a boat in Amsterdam and gives you a chance to stretch your legs and immerse yourself in a smaller Dutch town.

Apart from the allure of a small Dutch town, Aalsmeer is most famous for its Aalsmeer Flower Auction, one of the largest flower markets in the world. Timing your Holland boat cruise with the flower market is perfect for any flower enthusiast.

When joining back onto the canal, the water winds on only for a few miles before arriving at the quaint canalside town of Leiden. Among Leiden’s many attractions is its famous windmills, and nothing defines the Dutch nation more so that its picturesque windmills. Aside from these iconic features, Leiden is also home to the Museum De Lakenhal, a museum full of art from famous Dutch painters such as Jan van Goyen, Rembrandt, and Jan Steen.

Northern boat hire in the Netherlands

As well as boating into the country’s heartland, boating holidays may also venture north into Northern Holland. The north of the country provides a wholly different landscape in which to explore, with the North Sea on your left and Lake Ijssel on your right. The calming rural scene that flows out before you proves that Holland has many different scenes to explore.

Leaving Amerstdam in a northerly direction, you will eventually come to the town of Edam. Famous the world over as the location of Edam cheese, the town does not disappoint. One of the town’s most popular attractions is its cheese market, and planning your canal boat holiday to coincide with the market is a must.

Moving on from Edam, the canal winds evermore northerly and bursts out into Lake Alkmaardermeer. Lake Alkmaardermeer is a fantastic natural landmark, and a perfect place to stop and enjoy the views and the waterside wildlife the lake has to offer. The laidback nature of north Holland creates the perfect landscape in which to relax and is a stark contrast from the busy inner cities.

Once you have soaked up the best of Lake Alkmaardermeer, take your canal boat rental to the Netherlands’ Akersloot region. This lakeside town appears perfectly on the water’s western bank and provides a great place in which to enjoy the views of the lake and neighbouring windmills.

Sightseeing with your boat rental in the Netherlands

Seeing the best of amsterdam’s historic sights.

Canal boat hire in Amsterdam not only allows you to explore the country’s many waterways and rolling green countryside but also allows you to see the capital city from a whole new perspective. When navigating the city from its series of waterways, you can see things you wouldn’t normally while avoiding the busy roads and streets. Amsterdam is one of Europe’s most culturally important cities and much like boating holidays in France , exploring attractions from the water adds a whole new element to sightseeing. One of Amsterdam’s most famous historical landmarks is the house of Anne Frank. Located along the Prinsengracht canal, mooring close to this attraction makes visiting a far easier undertaking.

Preserved since the 1940s the house was the hiding place of the Frank family, including their famous wartime diaries daughter, Anne Frank. The house is preserved as it would’ve been during the 1940s and also includes an exhibition about the Nazi occupation of the country during the Second World War. Another of the city’s most famous landmarks is the ‘Oude Kerk’. Simply translated into English, the ‘Old Church’ has stood here since the earliest 13th century and is one of Amsterdam’s oldest buildings. Visiting the Oude Kerk with your canal boat hire in the Netherlands means you can pull up directly alongside the church and see it in all its glory from the banks of the canal.

Mix an art adventure with canal boat holidays in Holland

Amsterdam and the wider Netherlands are famed for their centuries of artworks from old master painters, painting iconic pictures throughout the past few centuries. No visit to Amsterdam would be complete without a visit to some of these famous artistic centres. Probably one of the Netherlands most famous sons, Vincent van Gogh, has his very own museum in the city and is a must for any fans of this post-impressionist painter. The museum is home to the largest collections of Van Gogh paintings and drawings globally. It is also one of Amsterdam’s most visited attractions and is a must-see when in the city.

Continuing with the artistic theme, Amsterdam is also home to the Rembrandt House Museum. This museum houses the work of this famous Dutch native painter and is also helpfully located along the Zwanenburgwal canal. After boating to this iconic painter’s home, you can simply jump out the door and be back on board in moments. Leaving the best until last, Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum is arguably the city’s epicentre for art and culture. Home to a wide range of exhibits showcasing art, history and culture from across the Netherlands and with nearly a million artefacts in storage and on display, there is too much to see in just one visit.

Nightlife on your canal cruise through the Netherlands

Apart from the overwhelmingly diverse history and culture, Amsterdam is also famous the world over for its hospitality and nightlife. Once you have spent the day navigating the region’s canals and waterways, simply moor your canal boat in Amsterdam city centre. Here, you can walk in any direction and find an atmosphere of good times and enjoyment. Although the city has a reputation for excess, it does also have its fair share of refinement, with elegant restaurants and cocktail bars. No visit to the Dutch capital would be complete without a visit to the city’s red-light district.

This famous part of Amsterdam often has a crude and sordid reputation, yet the district’s atmosphere has more in common with a party or carnival, and although it is not to everyone’s taste, it is well worth a visit. If you are a fan of live music events, slipping from your barge to visit some of Holland’s best music venues will be high on your list. The former church venue of Paradiso is one of the city’s most famous venues, and watching a gig surrounded by the stained glass of religious iconography is a unique experience. This perfect balance of high culture, history and feel-good nightlife show that Holland is one of Europe’s ideal destinations for barge holidays for beginners . If you’re looking for this type of well-rounded holiday, try boating holidays in Ireland .

Canal boat hire in Amsterdam choosing the right size

A cosy river cruise in amsterdam, holland.

If you and your partner are taking a boating holiday through the Dutch countryside, a simple sized boat is all you will need. A small sized boat such as the Penichette Classiques is ideal for couples or those travelling in a smaller group. The small size of the boat is not only great for those travelling light; it is also great for those who are new to navigating vessels along the canal. The small and streamlined design makes it agile and easy to manoeuvre through some of the narrower Dutch canals. Smaller boats come in a variety of styles and cater for every type of budget, from the most luxurious to the economical budget boaters. It is important to remember that smaller boats will have far less storage space than bigger boats; this may not be an issue if you’re just using the boat as means of transport.

Larger canal boat rental in Amsterdam

If the whole family is going away together then you may need to opt for a much larger boat, one with a bigger capacity. Boats such as the Pénichette Aft Dec are capable of playing host to up to twelve people and are great for larger families or groups of friends. As well as large cabins, beds and toilets, these larger boats are also capable of holding far more supplies, ideal if you are spending extended periods of time on the water. Even though these barges are much bigger, they are just as capable of elegant manoeuvrability through the canals of Holland.

As the network of canals spread across the country in every direction, it is easy to travel across Holland in a complete loop, even with a larger canal boat rental . Starting from one city such as Amsterdam, boaters can make their way around the country and return to the city they started in. This is ideal if you’re flying in and out of the country.

Luxury Cruises to the Netherlands

Netherlands cruises take you to Rotterdam and Amsterdam, two of the most exciting cities in this colorful, compact country. All the aspects of Dutch culture you’ve ever imagined are here, from brilliant tulips in spring to cheese, canals, and cycling. Both cities are central to Europe’s art scene. Yet while Amsterdam’s center dates back to the Middle Ages, Rotterdam is all avant-garde contemporary architecture, creating a fascinating contrast.

But there’s so much more to this eclectic country. On a cruise to The Netherlands with Celebrity, you can learn about the tragic history of Anne Frank and her family as they hid from the Nazis. Be dazzled by the world’s biggest flower auction at Aalsmeer, or the rainbow colors of beautiful Keukenhof Gardens in spring. Head to Kinderdijk, near Rotterdam, to gaze at the row of 19 historic windmills, or learn how the famous Dutch cheeses are made in pretty villages like Gouda or Edam. Experience the charm of The Netherlands on a European cruise with Celebrity.

Netherlands Cruise Highlights

Amazing art galleries.

Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum is a must-visit for art enthusiasts. Nearby is the MOCO, featuring works by Banksy, Jeff Koons, and Andy Warhol. The magnificent Rijksmuseum, meanwhile, is home to priceless masterpieces by Dutch artists, including Rembrandt’s Night Watch. In Rotterdam, head for Museumpark for contemporary works at the Kunsthal, design and fashion at the Het Nieuwe Instituut, and 1930s style at the Sonneveld House.

Wondrous Waterways

Historic canals are a distinctive part of the Dutch landscape, particularly in Amsterdam, where they loop in concentric circles around the central Dam Square. The waterways here were completed in the 17th century to bring merchandise from all over the world into the city. Lined with grand old merchants’ houses and flower-bedecked houseboats, they’re best seen from a glass-topped boat that glides through the narrow waterways and under slender bridges.

The Netherlands is world-famous for its cheese, and a visit here presents plenty of opportunities to see how and where it’s made. Gouda and Edam are the most famous, but you’ll also find Leerdammer, Frisian, Maasdam, and Old Alkmaar, among others. Visit the pretty village of Edam, filled with cobbled streets and ancient drawbridges, and spend time at a cheesemaker’s, with a chance to taste the firm, creamy cheese.

Featured Netherlands Cruise Ports

Amsterdam’s canal-lined streets, overlooked by old patrician houses, are a joy to explore, whether you walk, cycle, or take a sightseeing cruise. Jordaan is one of the prettiest neighborhoods, with narrow lanes, flower-filled window boxes, and indie boutiques. Linger over waffles and whipped cream in a coffee house. Don’t miss the Anne Frank House, a poignant memorial of the Holocaust. Art lovers should head straight to the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum.

Multicultural Rotterdam fizzes with energy and is a hub of creativity that’s expressed in its extraordinary architecture. Check out the Cube Houses, yellow cubes tilted at more than 50 degrees. Admire the shimmering, futuristic Markthal, and step inside for an array of cheeses, deli snacks, and coffee shops. Gaze at the graceful Erasmus Bridge, a symbol of the city known as The Swan, and visit Delfshaven, a historic neighborhood of canals, cafés, and craft breweries.

Netherlands Cruise Itineraries

Cruises to The Netherlands last from four to 13 nights, with a wide range of itineraries to choose from. You could sail round-trip from Rotterdam to the serene Norwegian fjords, or head north on a voyage that circles volcanic Iceland and calls in Britain and Ireland. See the best of Scandinavia on a cruise from Amsterdam, or cross the Atlantic to or from Fort Lauderdale, visiting Bermuda, the Azores, and Ireland along the way. Finally, opt for a mini-cruise from Southampton, which gives you a full day in either Amsterdam or Rotterdam.

Itineraries

Why cruise to the netherlands with celebrity cruises.

Cruise to The Netherlands with Celebrity and you’ll enjoy the comforts of a sophisticated, contemporary ship as a luxurious home during your European adventure. On Celebrity Apex, head to the leafy, light-filled lounge, Eden, for cocktails and dinner, or have lunch in the sunshine at the Rooftop Garden. Choose The Retreat for suite accommodation with access to a private sundeck and lounge, and a table in the chic restaurant, Luminae at The Retreat.

See the best of The Netherlands on your cruise with Celebrity, whether your passion is art, architecture, flowers, food—or whether you’re simply enchanted by the idea of soaking up the good-natured atmosphere of this quirky, history-packed corner of Northern Europe.

Typically all that is required to travel for most HolidayMax packages for Australian citizens is:

  • be fully vaccinated
  • take Covid tests
  • complete travel declarations

without requirements to quarantine or other Covid travel restrictions. There is now a trend of countries fully ending Covid border restrictions (eg scrapping test requirements etc), such as the United Kingdom and Scandinavia. More countries are expected to follow since all governments have detailed strategies to live with Covid and to enable their tourism industry to flourish again. # Relax - we will provide you with assistance with identifying any pre-travel requirements still remaining.

Many travel insurance providers are now offering good cover for Covid, including:

  • Travel disruptions and additional expenses due to Covid
  • Positive Covid test before travel
  • Positive Covid test during travel (including need to change travel arrangements / isolation)
  • Cancellation Cover
  • Medical expenses cover

Insurance cover can be very inexpensive, like only $150 for three weeks in Europe # . We strongly recommend taking out travel insurance with Covid cover. Following are some insurance companies: Medibank | TID | AHM | NIB Book now to secure the best deal and biggest savings. Use part of your Early Bird savings to pay for your travel insurance!

Boat and bike tours.

Dutch Barge Cruises offers a variety of bike and barge tours in Europe: e.g. in Holland, Belgium, France and Germany. Combine the luxury of an active outdoor vacation on one of the hotel boats. Bike and Barge holidays are guided cycling tours with accommodation on a river-barge or as you wish on a hotel boat. Besides the boat and bike tours these ships are also available for charter on river cruises and excursions.

Exept from our Barges that sail the so called Boat and bike tours we also have a few Sailingships that sail in the Netherlands but also in Denmark and Sweden.

Our Sail and Bike ships:

  • Wapen fan Fryslân
  • Leafde fan Fryslân
  • Mare fan Fryslân

A little bit of adventure is a part of every Sail & Bike tour: the departure and arrival day and the location are a certainty, 100%. For the rest, the planned daily sailing routes are partially dependent on the strength and direction of the winds. The skipper decides the best route to be taken day by day, and discusses the options with his guests. The crew does everything in its power to enable the program to run according to plan and to offer you as fascinating, varied and active a week as possible, in which nature and culture play a major part. It is, however, also possible that departure times and the time spent on the water – and even the order of the program itself – may be adjusted. Enjoy the ride and let yourself be led by the elements! Whenever possible, various passages will be undertaken fully rigged and anyone who would like to help the crew to sail and steer the boat is welcome to do so. This is of course absolutely up to you and no sailing experience is necessary.

Visit the Netherlands

What if you want to visit the Netherlands and are looking for interesting places to vist? We would suggest a bike and barge tour. Cycling without any worries where to stay for the night and see all the beautifull places Holland has to offer.

Most boat and bike tours are guided and will show you all those highlights you were looking for during your travel in the Netherlands. Our popular tour from Amsterdam to Bruges is certainly worthwhile but we have a lot more to offer.

What to think of he northern part of Holland? The province of Friesland or the island in the Waddensea are just a few examples of this unique country. You could choose for a tour around the IJssellake but also could go east to visit the historic Hanseatic cities. Of go the most southern part of the Netherlands all the way to Maastricht. Holland is a small country but there are lot of interesting places to visit. Check our monthly calendar and see all the boat and bike tours we have to offer.
