The game you hunt

The game you hunt includes a whitetail population that is second to none anywhere in the United States. In Virginia, Southampton County boasts one of the highest amounts of harvested deer per square mile in the entire southeast.  We also employ quality wildlife management with regulated annual harvest, quality, and constant improvement to the habitat.

Virginia Hunting Terrain and Wildlife Habitat

The state of Virginia offers something special for everyone!  Over 30% of the state is used in agriculture, so no doubt there is plenty for the native wildlife to eat, as well!  There is trophy deer hunting in VA from the sea to the mountains!

Virginia Hunting Areas and Regions

The Coastal Plain, bordered by the Chesapeake Bay, is rich waterfowl hunting area because it is rich in marshlands.  Between Fairfax and Fredericksburg, VA there are some good duck hunting hotspots.

The Piedmont Area is rich and fertile and this is where the majority of the farming is done in the state.  Tomatoes, soy, peanuts and tobacco are a few of the crops produced.  There are even a few wineries and vineyards, but those are in the mountain areas.  Deer, turkey and duck hunting opportunities are found in this area.

The Blue Ridge and the Valley & Ridge areas are the hot spots for whitetail deer, bear, turkey and even elk.  The Blue Ridge Mountains are truly a breathtaking sight!  This part of the country draws many visitors, particularly during the autumn months when the mountains are alight with fall foliage colors.  What a great time to get in the woods and scout out a perfect spot!

The far west of Virginia is the Appalachian Plateau.  This, too, offers some great hunting opportunity for a variety of game.

Virginia Hunting License and Regulations

For most Virginians, hunting is a long held and sacred tradition.  Virginia has welcoming policies for hunters to enjoy the state’s resources.  However, there has been many years of game management and development of the state’s wildlife management areas for public hunting.  Virginia is a big proponent of youth and apprentice hunting, with a goal of keeping the tradition alive and preserving wildlife for future generations.   In-depth research can be conducted at Virginia Dept of Game and Inland Fisheries website.

The Whitetail Deer season kicks off with a youth hunt in late September, followed by archery season.  Different area have regulations regarding bag limits and early and late season, and which counties allow gun hunts.  Our featured VA Hunting Guides will make sure you are set to be within the law.

Bear hunting is on the rise in Virginia – but this is a no-bate state.  Hunting is only allowed in designated areas around the Blue Ridge Mountain Range.  Our featured VA hunting guides will know the hunting method used, typically spot and stalk, as well as the correct seasons and bag limits.

Spring and fall turkey are available in Virginia.  The spring is a fantastic time to take to the woods in pursuit of a big gobbler!

Virginia Hunting Trips

I have often said that it was the canvasback that built this business, and its true we have some world class areas for canvasbacks, but we are really so much more. Over the last 20 plus years we have put together some of most productive and diverse waterfowl hunting in the eastern flyway.

The operation at a closer look

Potomac river.

We have many private blinds on the Tidal Potomac River mainly in the Woodbridge area. Over the years we have worked really hard in positioning them to take advantage  of the feeding habits, weather patterns, wind direction, tide conditions, migration patterns, refuge impoundments and the kitchen sink. The Potomac has a variety ducks that migrate there every year. We hunt shallow bays near the refuge impoundments and the larger creeks for mallards, black ducks, pintails, gadwalls, ring necks, and widgeon. When it gets colder we move to our big water blinds to target canvasbacks, redheads, and blackheads (Chesapeake term for lesser scaup) and greater scaup. But when it freezes then it all comes to the big water blinds. And of course the bonus is we take Canada geese on a lot of our duck hunts. Our blinds are fixed stationary blinds and can accommodate up to 5 shooters comfortably, 6 shooters possibly. If you have more than that in your group we can run multiple blinds.

Our Inland Swamps and Ponds

Our inland areas are where we do a lot of our early season hunts.  During that time we have a lot of wood ducks, teal, and some resident mallards, and black ducks. Then there is always a smattering of gadwall as well. As we start getting into the  migration and colder weather the mallards and black ducks start to pour in. The ponds consistently produce Canada geese and some will cough up both geese and ducks.  These areas are well off the beaten path, but access into our blinds is very user friendly. We like to limit our puddle duck hunts in these areas to no more than 4 hunters per blind. Our blinds in these areas will be either stationary box blinds or permanently fixed A-frame blinds.

Field Goose Hunts

Most of our field goose hunts occur in central Virginia, Our farms are in the counties of Orange, Fauquier, and Culpeper.  Some of my most memorable hunts have been during the evening while a full moon hangs over the field with big flocks of Canadas in route to our field against the back drop of the rolling hills of the piedmont. Simply awesome! We do these hunts from A-frames or layout blinds According to our clients mobility.

Pick Your Hunt

We start our season on September 1. During that month we target early Canada geese on both water and in the field. Our water hunts are primarily on the Potomac and are very consistent; while our field and pond hunts take place at our farms in the central part of the state. We target both teal and geese the last half of the month. Teal hunting is all about timing if we time it right then its awesome, if we don‘t then the poor geese take the beating. The 4-day October season is all about wood ducks and teal in our swamps. It doesn’t get any better than our setup we have at Big Tree. All I’ll say is that you better bring your A game, because when they turn the corner into the slough they are going to be right in your face! November is all about hitting the birds that are staging here as they migrate through. We run a combination of hunts during thIs time. We‘ll continue to pound the swamps for wood ducks and teal, the only difference now is that the mallards  and black ducks will be joining in. Because our swamps are loaded with food we pull a lot of ducks into these areas. This is also when we turn our attention to the blinds on the Potomac that are positioned around the refuge impoundments. We run traffic on these birds as they as they access these ponds. They are mostly mallards, black ducks, and gadwall. It's this part of the season when we will take a lot of Canada’s while duck hunting provided Canada's are in season. December through January is when it's all in play, This is usually when we get our first big push of Canada geese. As they stage on our farms we get after the field hunting. As long as we don‘t get a major freeze  the swamps are fat with fat mallards and black ducks. Back on the river we are utilizing our stationary blinds or setting our 28-foot pontoon floater and running a massive spread for gadwall, widgeon, redheads, ring-necks, black-heads, and of course cans. Everything being equal and we had enough cold up north all of our birds should be in town, at that point all we need is some good nasty local weather to get them up and moving.  At this point in the season we run both morning and afternoon trips. A cloudy windy afternoon can be magical for the big three divers, and our afternoon hunts are very convenient for our local folks to get off work early to do some gunning. If we get ice, well it's game over, it all comes to our big water blinds at that point. This has been our MO for the past 20 plus years and it has served our clients well.

Turkey Hunting In Virginia

Two-day guided spring hunts.

Join us for two days of turkey hunting in the hills of Western Virginia. Much like the grouse, Virginia turkeys are one of the most complex birds to hunt. These birds are incredibly wild—using the terrain completely to their advantage. These ridgelines, valleys, and mountains can be tough to navigate, providing these birds with excellent cover. Pair that with incredible eyesight, hearing, and intuition and you've got one of the toughest turkey hunts you can find.

They can sneak around above you and below you without making a sound. You'll never see them until the very last minute—which makes this kind of turkey hunting so exciting. Our guides use a run-and-gun method developed over decades of hunting these hills. We locate the birds during scouting missions leading up to your trip. It's truly a game of cat and mouse.

I've Got You Covered

What to expect.

Every trip is custom-tailored to you and/or your group. From the time we meet until the time I drop you off, absolutely everything is taken care of, and everything is considered. During the first half of the season, we can only hunt until noon, so the remainder of your day will be spent fishing with your guide or relaxing at our full-service lodge. During the second half of the season, you can choose a half-day hunt, half-day fishing, or full-day hunt—you'll break for lunch and hit em hard in the afternoon.

Trip Preparation

Leading up to your trip, I’ll be in touch (a month out), with a rough plan of the day you booked. A week in advance, I provide a full itinerary of the day. You’ll know what the weather will be, what equipment you’ll need, what we're eating for lunch, and where to meet.

Lunches and Beverages

Eat lunch on a secluded ridgeline or gravel road, away from the public and your everyday life. Meals are all handmade and all of your dietary restrictions and special needs (whether you’re a carnivore, vegetarian, or vegan), are covered—accommodating the need of every individual on board. The Yeti is always packed with beverages.

Non-Stop Turkey Hunting and Fishing

My biggest goal is to leave you with an experience and a day of hunting and fishing that you will never forget. When we get out in the woods, we hit 'em and we hit 'em hard. Whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned veteran, we use all of our experience and skills to get you on the best turkey hunting and fishing—providing the best time with us possible.

Spring Turkey Hunts

April 8 - april 23, first half of virginia spring turkey season.

During the first half of Spring Turkey Season in Virginia, hunters are permitted to hunt on half-hour before sunrise until noon each day. During this season we offer half-day hunts and half-day smallmouth bass or trout float trips to help our guests maximize their time in the mountains of Western Virginia.

April 24 - May 13

Second half of virginia spring turkey season.

For guests looking to spend all day out in the hills hunting Virginia Turkey, this is the time to do it. We can hunt one half-hour before sunrise until sunset each day. After our morning hunt, we'll break for lunch, with food and drinks provided, then head back into the woods for the second half of the hunt. The legal bag limit per hunter is one turkey per day. If your group gets your limit in the morning, come back to the lodge to relax and share stories about your day or hit the water on the drift boat—fishing for smallmouth bass or trout.

Get Out On The River

Smallmouth bass & trout fishing.

Whether its the first half of turkey season when we can only hunt until noon, or its the second half and you've bagged a trophy Tom during your morning hunt, we want you to get the most out of your trip to Botetourt County, Virginia. That's why we offer guided fishing trips during your stay with us. This time of year is particularly great for Smallmouth Bass on the New River and the James River . The trout fishing on the Jackson River is equally as exciting.

Let's Talk The Hunt

Tactics & equipment.

We hunt on both public and leased land and are specially permitted to guide on National Forest Land. Calling tactics are dependent on the time of day, time of season, and the results of our guide's scouting leading up to your trip. With our run-and-gun strategies, we may cover a lot of ground or we may end up hunkering down in one place, it's all dependent on the birds and the day. That being said, come prepared to move if the hunt demands it.

The Day Of The Hunt

We're up at 5 am serving breakfast at the lodge and preparing for the day's turkey hunt. Our guides will walk you through the day's hunt, going over tactics we'll be using, the ground we'll be covering, the areas we'll hunting, and what to expect during your turkey hunt with us.

During The Hunt

Our guides do all of the preliminary scouting leading up to your trip to ensure we have the best chance to harvest that trophy Virginia Turkey. They do all of the calling for you, guiding you through where the birds will be approaching from and helping you ready your shot.

Keeping You Going

We like to travel light, using a run-and-gun method of hunting, flanking the birds around ridgelines and hillsides. Our guides bring enough water and snacks to keep you going throughout the hunt and provide full lunch and beverages during the day's break at noon to ensure you're ready to hit 'em again in the afternoon. Nobody likes a hungry hunter—we've got you covered.

Other Guided Bird Hunts

All inclusive stays, turkey hunting & lodging.

Nestled in West-Central Virginia on the banks of the James River, Hodges farm is a 13 Acre residence with breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. We have a full-service lodge, two glamping tents, and all of the amenities you need to feel at home in nature on our little slice of paradise.

What an amazing experience! Guided fishing was a first-time experience, and we were not disappointed. Wesley was very helpful in planning our excursion, honing in on what we specifically wanted, to make the experience fun and memorable. He partnered us with Preston, who was in close contact leading up to the event, ensuring he met the needs of what we wanted, from what kind of fishing we wanted to do, to dietary needs for lunch planning.

We got to fish, Wes did the rest. From changing lures when necessary depending on what they’re biting to feeding us a great lunch on the river. He really catered to our group the whole way. We’re already booking more trips for bird hunting as well as fishing. Looking forward to our next adventure with Wesley Hodges!

If I could give this more than 5 stars I would. It’s indescribable what a Wes Hodges Guiding and Lodging experience is like. From the moment you plan the trip and even after you leave, Wes and his team personally curates your trip to fit you. It’s so much more than the fishing. No matter what level you’re on, there’s something to be learned from Wes, whether it’s about casting, technique, or life.

Booked the trip for my 40th birthday, had never tried fly fishing and Wes looked like the guy to teach me! Ended up that Wes had an emergency the morning of our trip but was very communicative and managed to get us another guide, Brad, who was awesome and patient, despite my lack of fly fishing skills. Had an amazing time and caught a bunch of small mouth! Would go again in a heartbeat.

My wife and I had a tremendous time with Wes. Very knowledgeable about the river, patient and personable. We're both beginners to fly fishing and Wes is a great teacher and guide. We'll go again and can't wait to bring the rest of the family. Highly recommend. Lunch on the water was top shelf.

Wes’s upland bird hunting experiences are second to none. He addresses every detail from scouting out the best locations and covers to preparing delicious lunches in the field. His dogs are a pleasure to watch work and hunt with. I highly recommend Wes for your next bird hunting excursion.

We booked a float trip with Wes & I asked him to instruct my daughter & make her fall in love with fishing. Mission accomplished! Wes was professional, personable, knowledgeable & fun. We caught many smallmouth and had a ball. Lunch was fabulous and I highly recommend Wes for your next trip. Now, out to purchase fishing supplies for my daughter, thanks to Wes!!!

Outstanding from start to finish!! Wes and Preston worked tirelessly to provide us with everything we needed to have a great time and an incredible experience!! We had 4 guys with different skill levels in our party, and both guides tailored their feedback to each of our unique needs. In addition, they provided us with top level equipment to keep us comfortable and a nice lunch break. I would recommend this company to anyone!!

On this our first ever upland bird hunting trip, my son and I could not have hoped for a better guide! Wes Hodges is the real deal! Incredibly experienced and incredibly knowledgeable and a pleasure to spend time with. I highly recommend Wesley Hodges Fly Fishing and Bird Hunting. We’ll be back for sure.

Our guide Preston Austin made all the difference. This was my second Fly Fishing trip and I had yet to catch anything. That would soon change. Preston informed, instructed, assisted and encouraged throughout the day. From the flies and their configuration on the line to technique and spotting, our success was directly linked to his significant fishing acumen. Add to that a fun spirit, a focus and interest in us and a nice lunch with beautiful surroundings, we could not have had a better day.

Thank you Wes Hodges for an awesome two day fly fishing adventure on the New and James Rivers of VA. Wes is a top notch professional who knows the craft of teaching a challenging skill well. This is my second time fly fishing with Wes and I look forward to many adventures in the future. The accommodations Wes has built for clients on his property are awesome and he's a friendly host with superb cooking capabilities.

We believe in providing our hunters with the thrill of the hunt. We are a free ranging ranch and do not have animals inside a fenced area. no guarantees are offered.

THE HABITAT

We are located in Knox County, the most dense area of wild hog population in the United States.  The terrain ranges from dense mesquite pastures to rough cedar break canyons laced with fresh spring-fed creeks to acres and acres of cropland. Most of our property is perched on the rim of the scenic South Wichita River canyons where the abundant wild game has easy access to water, cover and food. Check out Google Earth aerial shot, coordinates: 33deg 38 min N and 99deg 35 min. W to see the terrain.

On the Ranch’s hog hunting areas, we set up strategically placed elevated 4 x 6 blinds, tripods, pop up blinds, and corn spinners. Once you arrive at 2:00 pm you will confirm with your email the signed waiver with one of the staff, get settled into your accommodations, and go through “Hog Orientation 101” with one of the Guides and be shown the hunting area.   At this point, you are basically “on your own” to get back to that area and start your hunt. The next 2 days one of the guide staff will meet with you to make a plan for the next hunt.  Although during warm sunny days the hogs take a “siesta”, and most of the time after some late-night hunting you will want to do the same. We recommend staying on the “hogs schedule” but you may want to prearrange a spot and stalk in another hunting area for an additional fee.

One of the biggest misconceptions first time Hog Hunters have about hogs is that by their appearance and unclean habitat that they are “dumb”. This is far from the truth. A hog’s intelligence level is higher than a dog. Their keen sense of smell is greater than a deer along with their keen hearing. The only advantage hunters have is that a hog’s eyesight is poor. A hog is a very nomadic type of animal–here today–10 miles away tomorrow not committed to a set daily habit. With all these traits it makes for one of the most difficult animals to pattern to hunt. Hogs move very fast and can go from 0 to 30-35 mph in matter of seconds. For hunters up to the challenge, who can handle “boar fever”, the satisfaction of accomplishment is greatly rewarding. Along with other game animals the females are the best eating, the boars are the best trophies and biggest challenge.

THE RECOMMENDED EQUIPMENT

  • Clothing suitable for the weather, camo and scent lok are recommended. Orange is not recommended or necessary.
  • Comfortable hunting boots. Snake boots are always recommended.
  • Rifle with scope and as far as size…. A .223 is NOT   recommended to be successful in killing hogs.  We suggest at least a .243 with a 150 grain bullet
  • Scope mounted Rechargeable Green light offers more clarity (available for rent $50 for entire length of stay from Ranger Creek)
  • Vehicle capable of handling rough ranch roads. 4WD/4 wheelers/UTV’s are an asset.
  • Game cleaning, skinning, and butchering tools (knives)
  • Coolers. Ice is available at the Main Lodge for $2.50 per bag

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS ABOUT HOG HUNTING AT RANGER CREEK RANCH

This question-and-answer section is meant to prepare our hunters to hunt “Ranger Creek Style”.

Q: How do you normally hunt hogs at Ranger Creek?

A:   Evenings and well into the night from a blind unless you are hunting with thermals with a guide.

Q: Can they be hunted during the day?

A: Yes if there is natural daylight feeding activity. Sometimes hogs will feed during the day when it is overcast and they have a normal feeding cycle during this time. Also when they are having a tough time finding food they tend to feed longer during daylight hours to get the food they need. Remember that hogs are basically nocturnal and 80% of our hogs are killed at night .

Q: What grain of bullet do I need to use?

A:   150 grain bullets

Q: What license do I need?

A:   License is not required to hunt wild hogs

Q: What clothes do I need?

A:   Clothes suitable for the weather. Camo and scentloc clothing is recommended but not required. Snake boots are recommended.

Q: Do I need a spotlight?

A: No but you will need a flashlight. We do rent the green lens scope mounted spotlights for $50 for entire length of stay.

Q: What rifle should I use?

A:   One you are familiar with. Large caliber, scoped rifles are commonly used. It is really an issue of shot placement, your guide will talk about this when you arrive. If you are from an area where night hunting is not allowed, it is highly recommended to practice shooting at night before you arrive. .223 is  not  recommended.

Q: What vehicle should I bring?

A:   It is recommended that your bring a vehicle that you feel comfortable driving rough ranch roads. If we have wet conditions during your hunt you will need a 4wd Also, you will need to be able to transport your hogs back to our processing facility.

Q: When I shoot a hog what do I do with it?

A:   “Don’t shoot it if you don’t plan on utilizing it” Your guide will talk to you about this and show you our processing facility. Hogs are normally hauled back to the cleaning area where they are field-dressed, skinned and quartered. It is the hunter responsibility to do this. You will need a cooler to keep your hog meat in once it is quartered. Also bring a good quality knife for skinning and butchering. We do have some freezer and cooler space available, but it works well to keep ice layered on the meat, which we have available on site.

Q: Is the meat from a Wild Hog good to eat?

A:  Yes, the meat from hogs is excellent. In some areas it is considered a delicacy. The most common hog, taken for meat, are young ones around 100-150 pounds, Meat from sows to any size is usually good but may get a bit tougher from older sows. Meat from older boars may not be good to eat, they are usually taken as a trophy only. Care must be given to the meat to preserve it and keep it cool like any type of meat. Wild hog has been on menus for many years, wild game cookbooks and the internet are full of different recipes to prepare it.

Q: What is the best strategy to hunt hogs?

A:   “ Get in the blind and sit until a hog comes”. Game movement charts play a big role here. Hunt as quiet and scent-free as possible, keep your equipment in good working order. A good pair of binoculars and scope mounted lights are recommended for seeing in low-light conditions.

Q: Do you allow hunters to spot n stalk?

A: Yes, an unguided spot n stalk can be arranged for an additional $450 for up to 4 hunters

Q: Can I bring bait?

A: Not recommended at all. Hogs are very sensitive to new things, and it usually takes them a long time to come into something new.  We have had hunters bring their own bait and the results are not good. It sometimes acts more like a hog repellent.

Q: Can hogs be hunted by archery?

A:   Yes, we have ground blinds and tripods that can be set up on active spots and tripods stands near corn spinners.

Q: Am I limited to hogs?

A:   If you will let us know you are interested in another type of hunt we can make special arrangements for you. Make sure you have the correct license (Example: License for deer if hunting during deer season) Please let us know at time of booking.

Q: Can I spotlight hogs from my ATV or truck?

A:   No, This is not the way we hunt here and has proven to be unproductive.

Q: What type of blind will I be hunting out of?

A:   Normally we hunt hogs from a 4’ x 6’ elevated box blind large enough for two hunters. The blinds have windows, and 2 chairs. The blinds are positioned in proven hog activity areas near a corn spinner.  When we find hogs frequenting an area where we don’t have a box blind we set up a pop-up blind or build a simple blind out of brush. Most of the archery hunting for hogs are also from tripods or pop-up blinds.

AUGUSTA, Ga. – This wasn't the kind of attention Rory McIlroy was hoping for on the day after the Masters.

A London financial paper, City A.M., cited anonymous sources as saying McIlroy was believed to be close to an $850 million deal to join LIV Golf. The publication did not say how the sources would know. That set off speculation and innuendo across the internet.

Recommended Videos

McIlroy was able to shut it down when he arrived at the RBC Heritage.

“I honestly don't know how these things get started,” McIlroy told Golf Channel from the range at Harbour Town. “I've never been offered a number from LIV and I've never contemplated going to LIV. I think I've made it clear over the past two years that I don't think it's something for me.”

He most recently said that at Bay Hill last month.

McIlroy said he won't judge players going to LIV if they feel that's what it is best for them. He also expressed anew how important it is to have the top players come together more often than the four majors. And he believes some PGA Tour players are still contemplating going over to the Saudi-funded tour. It's just not for him.

“I'll play the PGA Tour the rest of my career,” he said.

He wasn't the only person getting plenty of attention involving LIV Golf. The commissioner and CEO, Greg Norman, spent three days at the Masters and made his presence felt at every turn.

Norman acquired a ticket to watch like any other spectator — presumably the 104 tickets available to the 13 LIV players in the Masters already were taken — and raved about the reception he received.

Norman took to Instagram to thank “the hundreds if not thousands of people" for what he called “unanimous support.”

“My right hand is sore from shaking hands with each and every one of you as well as the hugs given to so many,” Norman wrote.

THE DRIVE FOR FIVE

Nelly Korda has more than a major championship at stake this week in The Chevron Championship. She will try to join Nancy Lopez and Annika Sorenstam as the only women to win five straight tournaments on the LPGA Tour.

Korda would be more similar to Sorenstam than Lopez, and not just because the fifth in a row would come at the LPGA's first major of the year. There also was a significant gap.

Sorenstam won twice at the end of the 2004 season — Japan, a week off, and then the ADT Championship. She skipped the 2005 season opener in Hawaii and then reeled off the next three tournaments on the schedule, capped by winning the Kraft Nabisco Championship.

Korda won the Drive On Championship in Bradenton, Florida, in January, and then skipped the entire Asia swing, taking a seven-week break. She returned to win in Los Angeles, the Phoenix area and then captured her fourth in a row at the Match Play in Las Vegas.

Lopez won her five straight in a six-week span in 1978. She started with three wins in three weeks, skipped the Peter Jackson Classic in Canada and then won the LPGA Championship and the following week in New York.

Korda is the first to win four straight tournaments since Lorena Ochoa won four straight in four weeks by seven shots, five shots, 11 shots and three shots. She took a week off and then tied for fifth at Cedar Ridge in Tulsa, Oklahoma, five shots out of the lead.

MAJOR BOOST

The Chevron Championship pledged to upgrade the first LPGA major of the year, and it took a big step Tuesday. It announced a purse increase to $7.9 million, up from $5.2 million. The prize money has gone up $4.8 million in the three years that Chevron has been title sponsor.

The winner will get $1.2 million.

Chevron also said it would extend its sponsorship through 2029.

The purse is closer in line with the other traditional majors in women’s golf. The U.S. Women’s Open remains the highest at $12 million, followed by the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at $10 million. The AIG Women’s British Open is $9 million.

The LPGA made the Evian Championship a major a decade ago. Its prize money is $6.5 million.

In addition to the big purse increase, Chevron is giving $10,000 to every player who misses the cut to help with expenses in travel.

REED'S MOVE

Patrick Reed left the Masters with a small measure of frustration because of a poor week driving the ball and not getting any momentum. He closed with an even-par 72 and had to settle for a tie for 12th.

It might have done him a world of good.

Reed had not received an invitation to the PGA Championship before he arrived at the Masters as the No. 112 player in the world ranking. With a good finish, the LIV Golf player moved up 27 spots to No. 85. The PGA Championship at Valhalla is a month away, and it's unlikely Reed will have fallen out of the top 100 by then.

The PGA of America has a history of inviting everyone inside the top 100 in the world ranking, though it's not part of the criteria. Oftentimes officials will go a little deeper.

At stake for Reed is a streak playing in every major dating to the 2014 Masters.

Reed said after the third round of the Masters he was uncertain of his schedule outside LIV Golf. He already got a small boost in the world ranking — LIV events do not offer ranking points — with a fourth-place finish in the International Series-Macau on the Asian Tour.

“Hopefully the PGA and the U.S. Open and The Open Championship take a look at things like that and take consideration on who they’re deciding to give exemptions to,” Reed said. “All I can focus on is playing good golf.”

A TOUCH OF CLASS

The most poignant memory of a caddie at the Masters was how Shota Hayafuji replaced the pin after Hideki Matsuyama won in 2021, and then removed his cap and bowed to the course as a show of respect.

Scottie Scheffler’s classy gesture wasn’t so obvious.

Two years ago, he walked off the 18th green with his wife, Meredith. She was home in Dallas this year awaiting the birth of their first child. Scheffler hugged two of his sisters, his parents, swing coach Randy Smith and manager Blake Smith and was about to walk to scoring when he stopped and turned.

His caddie, Ted Scott, was still exchanging hugs when Scheffler called to him and waited. He had Scott go with him, leading the way.

“He doesn’t want to make the walk alone,” CBS announcer Jim Nantz said. “That was great of him. What a gesture.”

The final round of the Masters averaged a 5.2 rating and 9.59 million viewers on CBS, which Sports Media Watch said was 5% down in ratings and a drop of 20% in viewership compared with last year. Among reasons for the drop is that last year the final round fell on Easter Sunday and benefited from a boost in out-of-home audience. One other factor could be the streaming option on the Masters' state-of-the-art website. ... Scottie Scheffler is leading the PGA Tour in birdie average and bogey avoidance. ... Rickie Fowler announced on social media that he and his wife are expecting their second daughter this summer. His wife, Allison, said the baby was due the week of the Olympics in early August. That also is two weeks after the British Open. ... Webb Simpson is No. 138 in the FedEx Cup and it's not from a lack of opportunity. He already has received sponsor exemptions into two $20 million signature events that did not have cuts. Simpson is playing on a sponsor exemption this week at the RBC Heritage, another signature event with no cut. Simpson won at Hilton Head in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

STAT OF THE WEEK

Scottie Scheffler is averaging $431,235 for every round of golf he has played this year on the PGA Tour.

“That's what I’m looking forward to most about being a parent is being able to love my child like my parents loved me.” — Masters champion Scottie Scheffler.
