The Hollywood Sign

Originally created in 1923, the then “Hollywoodland” sign was supposed to be up for only a year and a half, yet here it is a century later . Getting close to the Hollywood Sign, though, is an often contentious issue thanks to pressure from local homeowners. You can catch a dead-on glimpse of the sign on Beachwood Drive, or farther up the hill near Lake Hollywood Park . Looking to get even closer? If you can stomach the suspect superheroes, claustrophobia-inducing crowds and never-ending line of gift shops, tattoo parlors and lingerie stores, there’s actually a fair amount of old Hollywood history and glamour to discover along the Walk of Fame. The immortalized names on those famous five-pointed terrazzo and brass stars run from the Walk’s western extreme at the Hollywood and La Brea Gateway to the W Hotel and Pantages Theater at Gower, and additionally on Vine from the Capitol Records Building down to Sunset, near where the original movie studios sprang up a century ago. Runyon Canyon

This 160-acre park at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains has one main loop, plus a bevy of dirt hiking trails. The sea of buff trainers and their sleek, sweaty clients can get to be too much during the busy morning and weekend workout traffic, but you’ll be rewarded with some of the best views of the city (and, if you’re lucky, a chance to gawk at power-walking celebs). The southern entrance is at the end of Fuller Avenue in Hollywood; the northern entrance is off the 7300 block of Mulholland Drive.

Hollywood Forever Cemetery

Any cemetery that houses the remains of such celluloid luminaries as Cecil B. DeMille, Jayne Mansfield, Rudolph Valentino and Mel Blanc was bound to become a tourist attraction. Aside from popular posthumous celebs, Hollywood Forever is also home to Cinespia’s summer outdoor movie screenings, an annual Day of the Dead festival and concerts, both outside on the lawn and inside the property’s Masonic lodge.

Ovation Hollywood

Known as Hollywood & Highland when it first opened, this shopping center helped usher in a commercial renaissance along Hollywood Boulevard—well, for a while, at least. Like many American shopping malls, it eventually became a shell of its former self, but a recent makeover  that’s renamed the complex Ovation seeks to add a bit of sparkle back to the block. The parking entrances are on Highland Avenue and Orange Drive.

Dolby Theatre

First known as the Kodak until its sponsorship swapped to Dolby in 2012, this 3,400-seat theater routinely hosts Broadway plays, high-profile screenings and the occasional concert. But the main attraction here, of course, is the Academy Awards: The annual star-studded broadcast will continue to be hosted here for the forseeable future, and all of the past Best Picture winners line the columns near the entrance.

If you want to explore every nook and cranny of Hollywood , it would take you several days - but if you've only got one day, you can still enjoy the best of what it has to offer. Here's how to navigate the most interesting and enjoyable parts of Tinseltown, while avoiding the gaudy, mundane and just plain cheesy parts.

Charge up your camera, put on your walking shoes and gas up the car. You've got a lot of ground to cover and not much time to do it.

How to Spend Your Day in Hollywood, California

If you get up fairly early and don't dawdle, you can see all of these sights in a day.

• Take a Real Studio Tour: If you're looking for a theme park with thrill rides, go to Universal Studios , but if you want an authentic, behind-the-scenes tour that shows you how movies are made, take a tour at one of the other studios instead. The tours take about two hours and some studios are closed on the weekend.
• Farmers Market : It's not quite in Hollywood proper, but the Farmers Market is close by and a great place to get an inexpensive meal. Early risers can start their day by eating breakfast here. If you're off to a slow start, go in the early evening and enjoy a meal at one of their award-winning food stands.
• See the Hollywood Sign : You can see the Hollywood Sign from many places around Los Angeles, but a quick drive up Mulholland Drive or above the Hollywood Reservoir will reward you with a glimpse of living in the Hollywood Hills and some great city views, too. Allow about an hour for the round trip drive.
• Hollywood Bowl : If your day can extend into the night , this summer concert series is one of the best outdoor music experiences anywhere.
• Hollywood Boulevard : This is where you'll find the Hollywood Walk of Fame (sidewalk stars) and Grauman's Chinese Theater (stars' hand- and footprints), as well as the Hollywood and Highland complex, the Dolby Theatre and lots of fun Hollywood kitsch. Allow two to four hours to see it all, and while it's the one don't-miss attraction in Hollywood, go in the late afternoon and stay into the early evening if you can.

What You Won't See in Hollywood, California, and Why

Even though Hollywood is a small portion of the larger Los Angeles area, you still can't see it all in a day. These are some of the popular activities that aren't included in your one-day experience:

• Sunset Strip: This section of Sunset Boulevard has a big reputation, but there's not that much to see unless you want to go to the clubs at night.
• Stars' Home Tour : We say skip it. Few of today's stars actually live in Hollywood, and much of what the guides tell you is made up or just plain wrong. There are better ways to spend your time.
• Forest Lawn or Hollywood Forever Cemetery : Unless you're a fan of old Hollywood and want to pay tribute to the stars of yesteryear, these places won't hold much interest for you.
• Universal Studios : It would take you a whole day just for Universal, and while it's a fun theme park, its studio tour is cursory and scripted.

Getting to Hollywood, California

Hollywood isn't a city, it's a Los Angeles neighborhood . The easiest way to get to Hollywood is to take US Hwy 101 (north from downtown) and exit at Highland Avenue. If you're coming from the south or west, enter 6801 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles CA into your GPS system, which will take you the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue - or locate that same spot on your Los Angeles map and navigate yourself there.

If you are coming to Los Angeles by plane, you will probably land at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Although, the Bob Hope Airport (BUR), situated in Burbank, is closer to Hollywood itself.

The shuttle service from LAX is operated by LAXFlyAway and costs $8 per person per ride. The shuttle bus stops on the west side of Vine Street, half a block away to the south from Hollywood Boulevard.

If you come to Bob Hope Airport, you can take a metro shuttle to North Hollywood station, where you should change to the Red line and ride into Hollywood.

Keep in mind, taxis can be quite expensive and you might have to wait in a long line, in order to get one.

Other airports, available around the city, are Long Beach Airport (LGB), Ontario International Airport (ONT), and John Wayne Airport (SNA). While private planes, mostly, come to Santa Monica (SMO), Van Nuys (VNY), or Hawthorne (HHR).

Consider your plans for Los Angeles promptly, when packing your luggage. Are you going to visit a theater performance, have a picnic, spend days on the beach, or go sightseeing from sunrise until the sunset? Are there any theme parks on your itinerary? Or, maybe, you wish to go hiking in one of the parks?

Make a list of the things you might need, not to forget anything. Swimsuit, sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are essential if you are coming during the summer season. For a long day of sightseeing, pack snickers, slippers, or any other shoes you find comfortable. If you are going hiking, good hiking boots are obligatory. And for a fancy event, such as theater performance or a dinner in a top-end restaurant, don’t forget a nice evening gown.

If Hollywood is even missing something, it is definitely not the number of facilities for eating out. Cafes, bars, and restaurants range from cheap fast food cafes to luxury restaurants, popular with most famous celebrities.

If you are on a low budget, try Ponchik Factory, Roro’s Chicken, Tacos El Gavilan, Skooby’s, La Monarca Bakery & Café, Running Goose, Musso and Frank Grill, Cheebo, Palms Thai Restaurant, or one of the numerous other bistros and cafes all around Hollywood.

However, if you are looking for something unique and elegant, you should head to Yamashiro, Japanese restaurant, which offers great vies of the city, as well as cozy gardens and tasty food. And, just across from the Chinese Theater, you’ll find ceFiore, fine place with Italian desserts, non-fat frozen yoghurt, and yogurt smoothies.

For drinks, try Roosevelt Hotel Lounge, The Well, Velvet Margarita Cantina, or Power House. And if you are a non-alcohol enthusiast or just thirsty for some juice, head to The Juice Fountain, which offers a variety of delicious fresh juices.

As well as with eating facilities, there is no lack of night entertainment in the city, which never sleeps. The number of theaters and nightclubs is exquisite, and New York City is, probably, the only place, which can compete with it.

For cultural evening out, you can choose one of the following options: Hollywood Bowl, Hollywood Palladium, Fonda Theater, Ford Theater, Pantages Theater, or Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre.

During the summer season, every Saturday at 7 pm, Hollywood Forever Cemetery hosts Cemetery Movie Screenings, where the Cinespia film society shows old movies. Keep in mind, the crowds can be huge, so arrive prior to the gate opening, if you want a good spot. The same rule applies to tickets, which should be purchased in advance.

Most people bring picnic food with them and enjoy the outdoor movie theater, as well as DJ music playing, while having a nice dinner. But keep in mind, no spirits are allowed, only beer and wine.

The Mulholland Drive offers great views of Los Angeles and San Fernando Valley, both at night and during the daytime, so don’t miss the opportunity. And as for night clubs, head to Sunset Strip, where you’ll find most popular night facilities and disco bars.

Hollywood is situated between Melrose Avenue on the south, the Hollywood Hills on the north, the 101 freeway on the east, and West Hollywood on the west. Two main streets are Hollywood Bouleward and Sunset Boulevard, which are both walkable, as well as the rest of Hollywood most interesting areas.

Falls are mostly warm and dry, causing frequent wildfires, so be careful if you are going wild during this season. Ocean temperature throughout the year varies from 14 o C (58 o F) in January to 20 o C (68 o F) in August. It’s not warm enough for swimming, but is great for surfing and sailing.

The well-known Santa Ana winds usually come during autumn and winter, although can occur any other time of the year as well. During these periods, hot dry winds blow from the desert to the coast, making weather hot and dry, unlikely the typical climate conditions in the area. Powerful ones can even create a high fire danger, by raising the air temperature quite significantly.

There is no lack of places to see in Hollywood. You can choose the best Hollywood tour from our list above or explore them on your own. If you are into film industry, don’t miss most world famous studios, such as Universal Studios, Warner Brothers Studios, Walt Disney Studios, Paramount Pictures, and CBS Television City. Of course, the Walk of Fame and the Hollywood Sign are must-visit. And don’t forget about Grauman’s Chinese Theater or the Dolby Theater.

If you are a museum enthusiast or the weather is not suitable for walking outside, try some of Los Angeles Museums. In fact, you might find Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Getty Center, and the Natural History Museum quite interesting. While Long Beach hosts one of the world’s largest and most spectacular aquariums – Aquarium of the Pacific – situated just across the harbor from the historic Queen Mary ship.

And for a spectacular scenery, head to one of the following places: Griffith Park, Mullholland Drive, or Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook – they all offer fantastic views of the city and valley laying under.

At Universal Studios Hollywood , many rides, shows, attractions, escalators and parking structures are designed to accommodate guests in wheelchairs and other disabilities.  A minimum of 200 wheelchair, semi-ambulatory, and companion tickets are available throughout the Hollywood Bowl . Inside the Ford Theatres amphitheatre there are 10 wheelchair spaces, 10 companion/ADA fixed seats and 14 transfer seats. Patrons can purchase up to three contiguous seats in the ADA section or as close to possible, if contiguous seats are sold out. The Greek Theatre  is ADA compliant, providing 41 wheelchair and semi-ambulatory tickets throughout the theatre, including accessible seating for those with mobility disabilities who require accessible seating. Check with individual attractions and venues for more information.

• The Los Angeles Police Department is responsible for police services. The LAPD's Hollywood station is at 1358 N. Wilcox Ave.

Hi..Thinking about doing this trip on Labor Day -September 4. Will stores be closed because of the holiday? Read mixed reviews because there is alot of time on a bus. Is Hollywood Tours the company you recommend? Thanks

Hi Susan, Some stores and businesses close for Labor Day, but there are also many others that stay open. I would look up the Los Angeles attractions you plan on visiting to see their Labor Day hours. Also, Hollywood Tours is a popular company in this area, so they’re a good option for your visit. 🙂

Comedian Tom Segura on Monday announced new dates set for the second leg of his latest global stand-up comedy tour, “Tom Segura: Come Together.”

Launching at the end of December 2023 in Honolulu, HI, his tour has been selling out with stops across Asia and North America. More than 20 shows are being added across North America for 2024 including stops at Ball Arena in Denver, CO, Footprint Center in Phoenix, AZ and Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, ON.

“This tour is bigger and blacker than anything I’ve ever done, but that name has already been used, but Come Together gets the point across,” said Segura. “Let’s all come together for a night. One way or another we’re going to make memories on this one.”

Segura’s previous world tour, “I’m Coming Everywhere,” sold out venues across the world with over 300 shows. Last year debuting his Netflix special Sledgehammer at #1 on the streamer, he’s also been behind popular Netflix specials including Ball Hog , Disgraceful , Mostly Stories , and Completely Normal .

Maxwell Is Ready to ‘Serenade' Fans on 2024 North American Tour

Maxwell has announced a 2024 North American tour, which kicks off on Sept. 14 at Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood in Hollywood, Florida. The 26-date trek will feature special guests Jazmine Sullivan and October London.

Tickets for the run dubbed the Serenade Tour, go on sale this Friday, March 29, at 10 a.m. local time via his official website .

Maxwell, who made Rolling Stone 's 100 Greatest R&B Songs of the 21st Century with his track "Pretty Wings," earned his third Grammy for his most recent album, 2016's blackSUMMERS'night winning Best R&B song for  "Lake by the Ocean." In 2022, he performed his recent single " Off " on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.  The track is expected to appear on his forthcoming blacksummers'NIGHT album, the third in his trilogy that includes 2009's  BLACKsummers'night . Maxwell has not announced a release date for the third album in the trilogy.

"There's so much happening," Maxwell  told  Rolling Stone  following the release of "Off" in fall 2021. "The end of the trilogy; the opening of a new chapter. When I started out I didn't know the power dynamics, the ins and outs of the record industry. I was just happy to be on the rise. Later I would hear from Prince, like, ‘You should own your masters and understand the business.' I was signed back in 1994. Things are different now, and gatekeepers have changed."
