Health and safety precautions for travelers

Visitors to Vietnam are encouraged to take sensible precautions against COVID-19 during their trips.

The World Health Organization outlines these basic practices to keep yourself and your loved ones safe:

Avoid traveling if you have a fever and cough.  If you have a fever, cough, and difficulty breathing, alert health-care services and share with them your recent travel history.

Maintain social distancing. Stay a meter or more away from others, especially those who are sneezing or coughing, or have a fever.

Wash your hands regularly with soap and running water. You can also use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer to spray your hands frequently.

Cover your mouth and nose with tissue when you cough or sneeze. Dispose of dirty tissues immediately and wash your hands after coughing or sneezing.

Avoid contact with live animals. Wash your hands with soap and water if you touch live animals or animal products in markets.

Eat only well-cooked food. Make sure your meals, especially animal proteins and dairy products, are thoroughly cooked and prepared in a sanitary environment.

Discard single-use masks.  If you choose to wear a single-use mask, ensure it covers your nose and mouth, avoids touching the mask, and wash your hands after removing it.

“Any travelers experiencing symptoms of the virus − fever, cough and difficulty breathing − should immediately call Vietnam’s health hotline: 1900 3228 . Vietnam has appointed 323 authorized testing facilities to carry out testing and diagnosis of COVID-19 disease. See the full list . For a full overview of the COVID-19 situation in Vietnam as it relates to travelers, as well as daily updates, please see our updated travel advisory. ”

Vietnam Travel Insurance Requirements

Last updated: 03/07/2024

Effective May 15, 2022, Vietnam lifted all Covid-19 travel requirements, including mandatory travel insurance. With that said, these entry rules are subject to change at any time, and all travelers heading to Vietnam should confirm the latest entry requirements prior to departing for their trip.

Squaremouth’s Vietnam Travel Insurance Recommendations

In addition to a policy with Emergency Medical coverage with at least $50,000 in coverage, Squaremouth recommends a policy with at least $100,000 in Medical Evacuation coverage. Travelers who are visiting more remote areas of Vietnam should consider a policy with at least $100,000 of Emergency Medical and $250,000 in Medical Evacuation coverage, due to the potential for increased medical costs.

Emergency Medical coverage can offer reimbursement for treatment due to an unforeseen illness or injury, and typically includes treatment for contracting Covid-19. The Medical Evacuation benefit can provide reimbursement for costs associated with transportation costs associated with a traveler getting to the nearest adequate medical facility.

For travelers with prepaid and non-refundable trip costs, Squaremouth recommends the Trip Cancellation benefit, which can reimburse up to 100% of covered trip costs if a traveler has to cancel their trip before they’ve left. Typical reasons include an unforeseen illness or injury, death, inclement weather, or terrorism. Canceling from testing positive for Covid-19 is typically covered, as well.

Policies with Trip Cancellation coverage typically includes Trip Interruption. This benefit can cover a traveler’s unused, prepaid, non-refundable trip expenses if a person’s trip gets interrupted for a covered reason such as illness or injury, flight delays, or a natural disaster. If a traveler needs to cut their trip short, this benefit can also cover additional transportation expenses incurred to return home.

FAQ About Travel Insurance to Vietnam

Travel insurance typically covers trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or stolen luggage, travel delay, and emergency evacuation. Some travel insurance packages also cover medical-related incidents too. However, remember that the exact coverage depends on the insurance policy.

No, you'll not be required to take out travel insurance for Vietnam. However, we strongly encourage you to do so anyway, because the cost of healthcare in Vietnam can be high, and taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself if you need medical attention during your stay.

Yes, medical travel insurance is almost always worth it, and we recommend taking out travel insurance whenever visiting a foreign country. Taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself in case you need medical attention during your stay. In general, we recommend VisitorsCoverage to travellers worldwide because it offers excellent value for money and well-rounded travel and medical benefits in its large catalogue of plans.

Health insurance doesn't cover normal holiday expenses, such as coverage for missed flights and hotels, but in case you run into medical trouble while abroad, it may cover some or all of your doctor or hospital expenses while overseas. However, not all health insurance providers and plans offer coverage to customers while abroad, and that's why it's generally best to take out travel insurance whenever you travel.

Although there's overlap, health and travel insurance are not exactly the same. Health insurance covers some or all of the cost of medical expenses (e.g. emergency treatment, doctor's visits, etc.) while travel insurance covers non-medical costs that are commonly associated with travelling (e.g. coverage for missed flights, stolen or lost personal belongings, etc.).

The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the age of the traveller, and the level of coverage desired. On average, travel insurance can cost anywhere between 3% and 10% of the total cost of the trip.

A single-trip travel insurance policy covers a specific trip, while an annual one covers multiple trips taken within a one-year period. An annual policy may be more cost-effective for frequent travellers.

Yes, you can sometimes purchase travel insurance after starting your trip, but it is best to buy it before the trip begins to ensure maximum coverage. If you do need to buy insurance after you've started your trip, we recommend VisitorsCoverage , which offers a wide catalogue of online trip and medical insurance policies, most of which can be booked with immediate effect. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Yes, you can most certainly purchase travel insurance for a trip that has already been booked, although we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible aftwerwards to ensure all coverage is in place before your journey begins. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Vietnam travel insurance: Common exclusions

Every travel insurance policy has things you won't be covered for. Common exclusions include:

  • If you purchase cover after the incident has occurred. For example, if you take cover out after you've been injured and need medical attention.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions. If you have any major medical conditions, make sure you let your insurer know before taking out a policy. Otherwise you won't be covered for claims related to that condition.
  • You travel despite government travel advice. For example, if you travel to areas that have a warning from Smartraveller, travel insurance may not cover you.
  • Incidents that occur while you're under the influence of drugs or alcohol. For example, if you go out drinking in Ho Chi Minh City, get injured and need medical attention, travel insurance won't cover you.
  • Driving vehicles without a licence. Like Australia, you won't be covered for medical costs or personal liability expenses if you drive without a licence in Vietnam.

What add-ons should I look for?

  • If you have plans to zoom around Vietnam on a scooter or motorbike, make sure to have the right license, and the right policy.
  • Watersports like snorkelling, jet skiing and para-sailing are popular activities in Vietnam. Make sure to add the right cover to your travel insurance.

Washing machine on fire

Will I be covered for COVID-19?

Travel insurance can cover you for COVID-19 in Vietnam. A policy can cover you for the following:

  • Rearrangement costs if you catch the virus and need to change your plans. Lots of comprehensive travel insurance policies let you claim up to $5,000 towards these expenses.
  • Medical costs due to COVID-19. This can include hospital expenses and RATs if you catch COVID-19 while overseas (but you won't be covered for mandatory PCRs).
  • Expenses if you need to isolate. For example, if you catch COVID while you're overseas and need to push back your flight and stay in your accommodation longer.

How do I get cheap travel insurance for Vietnam?

  • Medical only or basic policies will generally be the cheaper policies on the market.
  • Use exclusive deals or promo codes to get a discount.
  • Opt for a higher excess. This will make your policy cheaper but more expensive if you have to claim.
  • Compare across a handful of travel insurers – they're not all the same.
  • Get the most value by buying your policy early. It means you're covered for longer while paying the same price.

When I travel, I don't want to fork out a lot for travel insurance. I always get something above the bare minimum though which usually only covers medical-only expenses. Flight disruptions and delayed luggage are really common, so look for a cheap policy that covers me for these things.

What do I do in emergencies?

For emergencies: call 113 (police), 115 (ambulance) or 114 (fire).

In a medical emergency, call for help and then contact your insurer on their emergency assistance line.

Civil unrest, security risks, threat of terrorist attack and crime are a concern in Vietnam, but you should still be eligible for travel insurance. It won't cover all of these situations but it can help cover medical costs, stolen belongings and much much more.

Rabid dogs are commonly found in Vietnam. However, if you are bitten or scratched by a dog or other mammal while in Vietnam, rabies treatment is often available.

Travelers more likely to encounter rabid animals include

  • Campers, adventure travelers, or cave explorers (spelunkers)
  • Veterinarians, animal handlers, field biologists, or laboratory workers handling animal specimens
  • Visitors to rural areas

Since children are more likely to be bitten or scratched by a dog or other animals, consider rabies vaccination for children traveling to Vietnam.

Eat and drink safely

Food and water standards around the world vary based on the destination. Standards may also differ within a country and risk may change depending on activity type (e.g., hiking versus business trip). You can learn more about safe food and drink choices when traveling by accessing the resources below.

You can also visit the Department of State Country Information Pages for additional information about food and water safety.

Prevent bug bites

Bugs (like mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas) can spread a number of diseases in Vietnam. Many of these diseases cannot be prevented with a vaccine or medicine. You can reduce your risk by taking steps to prevent bug bites.

What can I do to prevent bug bites?

  • Cover exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and hats.
  • Use an appropriate insect repellent (see below).
  • Use permethrin-treated clothing and gear (such as boots, pants, socks, and tents). Do not use permethrin directly on skin.
  • Stay and sleep in air-conditioned or screened rooms.
  • Use a bed net if the area where you are sleeping is exposed to the outdoors.

What type of insect repellent should I use?

  • FOR PROTECTION AGAINST TICKS AND MOSQUITOES: Use a repellent that contains 20% or more DEET for protection that lasts up to several hours.
  • Picaridin (also known as KBR 3023, Bayrepel, and icaridin)
  • Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) or para-menthane-diol (PMD)
  • 2-undecanone
  • Always use insect repellent as directed.

What should I do if I am bitten by bugs?

  • Avoid scratching bug bites, and apply hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to reduce the itching.
  • Check your entire body for ticks after outdoor activity. Be sure to remove ticks properly.

What can I do to avoid bed bugs?

Although bed bugs do not carry disease, they are an annoyance. See our information page about avoiding bug bites for some easy tips to avoid them. For more information on bed bugs, see Bed Bugs .

For more detailed information on avoiding bug bites, see Avoid Bug Bites .

Some diseases in Vietnam—such as dengue, Zika, and filariasis—are spread by bugs and cannot be prevented with a vaccine. Follow the insect avoidance measures described above to prevent these and other illnesses.

Stay safe outdoors

If your travel plans in Vietnam include outdoor activities, take these steps to stay safe and healthy during your trip.

  • Stay alert to changing weather conditions and adjust your plans if conditions become unsafe.
  • Prepare for activities by wearing the right clothes and packing protective items, such as bug spray, sunscreen, and a basic first aid kit.
  • Consider learning basic first aid and CPR before travel. Bring a travel health kit with items appropriate for your activities.
  • If you are outside for many hours in heat, eat salty snacks and drink water to stay hydrated and replace salt lost through sweating.
  • Protect yourself from UV radiation : use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, wear protective clothing, and seek shade during the hottest time of day (10 a.m.–4 p.m.).
  • Be especially careful during summer months and at high elevation. Because sunlight reflects off snow, sand, and water, sun exposure may be increased during activities like skiing, swimming, and sailing.
  • Very cold temperatures can be dangerous. Dress in layers and cover heads, hands, and feet properly if you are visiting a cold location.

Stay safe around water

  • Swim only in designated swimming areas. Obey lifeguards and warning flags on beaches.
  • Practice safe boating—follow all boating safety laws, do not drink alcohol if driving a boat, and always wear a life jacket.
  • Do not dive into shallow water.
  • Do not swim in freshwater in developing areas or where sanitation is poor.
  • Avoid swallowing water when swimming. Untreated water can carry germs that make you sick.
  • To prevent infections, wear shoes on beaches where there may be animal waste.

Leptospirosis, a bacterial infection that can be spread in fresh water, is found in Vietnam. Avoid swimming in fresh, unchlorinated water, such as lakes, ponds, or rivers.

Keep away from animals

Most animals avoid people, but they may attack if they feel threatened, are protecting their young or territory, or if they are injured or ill. Animal bites and scratches can lead to serious diseases such as rabies.

Follow these tips to protect yourself:

  • Do not touch or feed any animals you do not know.
  • Do not allow animals to lick open wounds, and do not get animal saliva in your eyes or mouth.
  • Avoid rodents and their urine and feces.
  • Traveling pets should be supervised closely and not allowed to come in contact with local animals.
  • If you wake in a room with a bat, seek medical care immediately. Bat bites may be hard to see.

All animals can pose a threat, but be extra careful around dogs, bats, monkeys, sea animals such as jellyfish, and snakes. If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, immediately:

  • Wash the wound with soap and clean water.
  • Go to a doctor right away.
  • Tell your doctor about your injury when you get back to the United States.

Consider buying medical evacuation insurance. Rabies is a deadly disease that must be treated quickly, and treatment may not be available in some countries.

Reduce your exposure to germs

Follow these tips to avoid getting sick or spreading illness to others while traveling:

  • Wash your hands often, especially before eating.
  • If soap and water aren’t available, clean hands with hand sanitizer (containing at least 60% alcohol).
  • Don’t touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. If you need to touch your face, make sure your hands are clean.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.
  • Try to avoid contact with people who are sick.
  • If you are sick, stay home or in your hotel room, unless you need medical care.

Avoid sharing body fluids

Diseases can be spread through body fluids, such as saliva, blood, vomit, and semen.

Protect yourself:

  • Use latex condoms correctly.
  • Do not inject drugs.
  • Limit alcohol consumption. People take more risks when intoxicated.
  • Do not share needles or any devices that can break the skin. That includes needles for tattoos, piercings, and acupuncture.
  • If you receive medical or dental care, make sure the equipment is disinfected or sanitized.

Know how to get medical care while traveling

Plan for how you will get health care during your trip, should the need arise:

  • Carry a list of local doctors and hospitals at your destination.
  • Review your health insurance plan to determine what medical services it would cover during your trip. Consider purchasing travel health and medical evacuation insurance.
  • Carry a card that identifies, in the local language, your blood type, chronic conditions or serious allergies, and the generic names of any medications you take.
  • Some prescription drugs may be illegal in other countries. Call Vietnam’s embassy to verify that all of your prescription(s) are legal to bring with you.
  • Bring all the medicines (including over-the-counter medicines) you think you might need during your trip, including extra in case of travel delays. Ask your doctor to help you get prescriptions filled early if you need to.

Many foreign hospitals and clinics are accredited by the Joint Commission International. A list of accredited facilities is available at their website ( www.jointcommissioninternational.org ).

In some countries, medicine (prescription and over-the-counter) may be substandard or counterfeit. Bring the medicines you will need from the United States to avoid having to buy them at your destination.

Malaria is a risk in some parts of Vietnam. If you are going to a risk area, fill your malaria prescription before you leave, and take enough with you for the entire length of your trip. Follow your doctor’s instructions for taking the pills; some need to be started before you leave.

Select safe transportation

Motor vehicle crashes are the #1 killer of healthy US citizens in foreign countries.

In many places cars, buses, large trucks, rickshaws, bikes, people on foot, and even animals share the same lanes of traffic, increasing the risk for crashes.

Be smart when you are traveling on foot.

  • Use sidewalks and marked crosswalks.
  • Pay attention to the traffic around you, especially in crowded areas.
  • Remember, people on foot do not always have the right of way in other countries.

Riding/Driving

Choose a safe vehicle.

  • Choose official taxis or public transportation, such as trains and buses.
  • Ride only in cars that have seatbelts.
  • Avoid overcrowded, overloaded, top-heavy buses and minivans.
  • Avoid riding on motorcycles or motorbikes, especially motorbike taxis. (Many crashes are caused by inexperienced motorbike drivers.)
  • Choose newer vehicles—they may have more safety features, such as airbags, and be more reliable.
  • Choose larger vehicles, which may provide more protection in crashes.

Think about the driver.

  • Do not drive after drinking alcohol or ride with someone who has been drinking.
  • Consider hiring a licensed, trained driver familiar with the area.
  • Arrange payment before departing.

Follow basic safety tips.

  • Wear a seatbelt at all times.
  • Sit in the back seat of cars and taxis.
  • When on motorbikes or bicycles, always wear a helmet. (Bring a helmet from home, if needed.)
  • Avoid driving at night; street lighting in certain parts of Vietnam may be poor.
  • Do not use a cell phone or text while driving (illegal in many countries).
  • Travel during daylight hours only, especially in rural areas.
  • If you choose to drive a vehicle in Vietnam, learn the local traffic laws and have the proper paperwork.
  • Get any driving permits and insurance you may need. Get an International Driving Permit (IDP). Carry the IDP and a US-issued driver's license at all times.
  • Check with your auto insurance policy's international coverage, and get more coverage if needed. Make sure you have liability insurance.
  • Avoid using local, unscheduled aircraft.
  • If possible, fly on larger planes (more than 30 seats); larger airplanes are more likely to have regular safety inspections.
  • Try to schedule flights during daylight hours and in good weather.

Medical Evacuation Insurance

If you are seriously injured, emergency care may not be available or may not meet US standards. Trauma care centers are uncommon outside urban areas. Having medical evacuation insurance can be helpful for these reasons.

Maintain personal security

Use the same common sense traveling overseas that you would at home, and always stay alert and aware of your surroundings.

Before you leave

  • Research your destination(s), including local laws, customs, and culture.
  • Monitor travel advisories and alerts and read travel tips from the US Department of State.
  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) .
  • Leave a copy of your itinerary, contact information, credit cards, and passport with someone at home.
  • Pack as light as possible, and leave at home any item you could not replace.

While at your destination(s)

  • Carry contact information for the nearest US embassy or consulate .
  • Carry a photocopy of your passport and entry stamp; leave the actual passport securely in your hotel.
  • Follow all local laws and social customs.
  • Do not wear expensive clothing or jewelry.
  • Always keep hotel doors locked, and store valuables in secure areas.
  • If possible, choose hotel rooms between the 2nd and 6th floors.

To call for emergency services while in Vietnam, dial 115 for an ambulance, 114 for the fire department, and 113 for the police. Write these numbers down to carry with you on your trip.

Healthy Travel Packing List

Use the Healthy Travel Packing List for Vietnam for a list of health-related items to consider packing for your trip. Talk to your doctor about which items are most important for you.

Why does CDC recommend packing these health-related items?

It’s best to be prepared to prevent and treat common illnesses and injuries. Some supplies and medicines may be difficult to find at your destination, may have different names, or may have different ingredients than what you normally use.

If you are not feeling well after your trip, you may need to see a doctor. If you need help finding a travel medicine specialist, see Find a Clinic . Be sure to tell your doctor about your travel, including where you went and what you did on your trip. Also tell your doctor if you were bitten or scratched by an animal while traveling.

If your doctor prescribed antimalarial medicine for your trip, keep taking the rest of your pills after you return home. If you stop taking your medicine too soon, you could still get sick.

Malaria is always a serious disease and may be a deadly illness. If you become ill with a fever either while traveling in a malaria-risk area or after you return home (for up to 1 year), you should seek immediate medical attention and should tell the doctor about your travel history.

For more information on what to do if you are sick after your trip, see Getting Sick after Travel .

Covid-19 Guidelines for Travelling to Vietnam

Foreigners and Indians travelling to Vietnam should follow the prescribed COVID-19 guidelines:

  • Travellers must test negative for COVID-19 within 72 hours before arrival and will be required to self-monitor for another 7 days after the quarantine period.
  • Foreign employees visiting Vietnam should have a sponsor who can assist in the paperwork and prepare the traveller for a mandatory 14-day quarantine on arrival in Vietnam.
  • Travellers coming from countries that have detected the Omicron variant will have to undergo a quick test for COVID-19 before boarding and when they arrive in Vietnam at their own cost.
  • Vietnam has eased the quarantine rules for fully vaccinated international tourists from January 1, 2022. Arrivals with negative COVID-19 RT-PCR test results will need to self-quarantine at home or their accommodation for three days on entering Vietnam. Two RT-PCR tests will be conducted on the first and third day of entry. If the result is negative, the traveller will still have to monitor their health for the next 11 days.
  • From March 7, 2022, anyone visiting Vietnam will have to submit a health declaration upon arrival. Passengers can fill out the form at the airport.
  • Travellers are advised not to travel if they are sick; those that travel while sick risk being quarantined and have to undergo tests.

  • Phu Bai International Airport
  • Noi Bai International Airport

Currency and Foreign Exchange

The national currency of Vietnam is the Vietnamese đồng, abbreviated as VND, and is managed by the State Bank of Vietnam. When travelling to Vietnam, do note that most of the major transactions in the country will be carried out in the official currency and so carry adequate funds for your trip. The exchange rate between the Vietnamese đồng (VND) and the Indian National Rupee (₹) will vary on a regular basis, and so, it is recommended that you monitor the exchange rates closer to your holiday and while purchasing your travel insurance Vietnam policy online from Tata AIG.

Popular Tourist Places in Vietnam

When travelling to Vietnam, there is so much to see and enjoy that you will need to have enough time on your hands and an itinerary if you want to be able to enjoy the beauty of the country. To ensure that your holiday plans are all set, first sort out all the documentation and permissions from the authorities before you head to any of the locations you want to visit. Vietnam is known for its rich history, townships, seascapes and quaint streets that are dotted with restaurants that serve delicious Vietnamese cuisine. And always remember to carry your travel insurance policy with you to protect yourself from any emergency on your tours!

- Hoi An : You cannot miss a trip to the beautiful Hoi An city, where you can catch a glimpse of the historical architecture through the 15th-century merchant houses that were once trading centres for Chinese and Japanese silk merchants.

You could visit the stunning Japanese Bridge at the western end of Tran Phu Street and also the Assembly Hall of the Fujian Chinese Congregation, which is the old town's most renowned temple.

- Sapa Countryside : If you love green spaces and treks, then a visit to the Sapa Countryside, surrounded by the awe-inspiring Hoang Lien Mountains, should be on your list. A number of ethnic minorities in Vietnam, such as the Giay, Hmong, and Red Dzao people, live close to the terraced paddy fields in the valley that is encircled by the Fansipan Mountain, Vietnam’s tallest peak. Sapa is now an old French hill station that is a busy tourist spot, unlike the green countryside.

- Hanoi : As busy as the country’s capital may be, locals and tourists find it difficult to avoid the allure of the city’s charm, where you can experience the best of the city life. If you enjoy art, the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology and Vietnam Fine Art Museum offer you a view into the country’s diverse and exquisite artistry. And while in the city, also take a trip to the historical Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum that is a tribute to the founder and former Prime Minister of modern Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh.

- Halong Bay : Enjoy the views of the karst seascape at the Halong Bay and be sure to choose an overnight trip to this location since a day trip will not suffice. You can explore the caves in the bay, such as the Hang Sung Sot or the stalactites and stalagmites of the Hang Dao Go.

The limestone islands on the bay have been turned into artistic serrated pinnacles due to the wind and the water, and the charming scenery is worth admiring.

- Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park : Another great spot for huge and lovely caves and caverns is the World Heritage-listed Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. If you enjoy exploring awe-inspiring stalactite and stalagmite displays, put this place on your list.

One of the most important caves you must visit is the Paradise Cave here, which goes on for 31 kilometres below the ground. If you explore the Tu Lan Cave or the “wet cave”, be prepared to swim through the cave rivers. The marvellous Phong Nha Caves can be accessed by boats.

Best Time to Visit Vietnam

North Vietnam has dry and cold winters between December to February and very hot summers from May to August. Therefore, plan your trip such that you can either visit during spring (March to April) or autumn (September to November) when the days are warm but pleasant. Central Vietnam that covers destinations like Hue and Hoi An are best during February and August, where the months of July and August will be pleasantly warm. During the other months barring these, Central Vietnam experiences heavy rains and hurricane-like situations between August to November, which can ruin your trip to Vietnam.

South Vietnam is warm and pleasant throughout the year except for the monsoon season between June to November. However, during these months, the rain does not quite affect travel, even though there may be some cases of flooding. Between March to May, quite a few foreigners may avoid South Vietnam because the temperature is warmer and goes up to 40°C.

No matter when you visit Vietnam, it is important to always have your travel policy with you at all times. Choose a suitable Tata AIG travel insurance Vietnam plan today so that you have an enjoyable trip to Vietnam!
