Palaces for ordinary people – that was what Stalin promised to the people when the construction of the Moscow Metro began between the World Wars. The communist dictator hadn’t promised too much. No other underground system in the world can boast such spectacular architecture – chandeliers, decorations, stucco, paintings on the walls – each station is individually designed. No wonder that Moscow residents love their metro. I will guide you through the bustle of one of the busiest subways in the world and show you the most beautiful stations Moscow city has.

Tour of Communist Moscow – every day

After the Communist October Revolution in 1918, Moscow became the capital of the Soviet Empire and was the center of socialist orbit for more than 70 years. This left its mark on Moscow, even if the USSR disintegrated more than a quarter of a century ago. The city streets are full of remnants of the communist regime and the Cold War. This is a walking tour where I will show you the most exciting places in Soviet Moscow: from the notorious KGB headquarters, also known as Lubyanka to the Karl Marx Monument to small hidden remains from the time of hammer and sickle. You will also learn about Stalin’s Great Terror political campaign and the system of the GULAG and how the USSR, the communist Russian republic, became modern Russia.

This place not only has trendy cafes and green squares, but here you can see the most beautiful spray works (according to Albrecht DĂŒrer), hangout-places of the youth and hipsters, as well as learn what Moscow looked like in the 19th century. Here you will also learn exciting and even bloody stories about famous gangsters, eccentric business people and legends like the wandering preacher Rasputin, who is known in Russia either as the “holy devil” or the mad monk. To learn a little more about Moscow’s culture, this is the tour for you. On my alternative tour, you will get to know Moscow away from the tourist hotspots. This tour is of 2 hours duration and you will experience the following on the tour:

  • St. John’s Hill, a quiet oasis right in the center, where time has stopped as it did in pre-Communist times

Met Opera’s Orchestra Will Tour Asia for the First Time

After the pandemic forced the cancellation of a tour planned for 2022, the ensemble will visit Japan, South Korea and Taiwan in June.

A conductor, standing at a podium, is seen with a raised right hand holding a baton while leading an orchestra, whose players are seen seated onstage in a concert hall.

By Javier C. HernĂĄndez

The coronavirus pandemic forced the Metropolitan Opera to shut its doors for more than a year and a half. It also upended plans that had been in the works for the Met Orchestra’s first Asian tour.

Now, that idea is being revived. The Met announced on Thursday that the orchestra and its music director, Yannick NĂ©zet-SĂ©guin, would visit South Korea, Japan and Taiwan in June, performing the music of Bartok, Wagner, Debussy and others alongside star soloists.

The Met musicians have toured overseas just twice since 2000. Peter Gelb, the company’s general manager, said that, beyond showcasing them, the tour was meant to help the Met expand its network of fans abroad.

“It’s important that we serve our global constituency with live performances in person when we can,” he said. “It’s very good for the morale of the orchestra to be able to perform in major cities of the world.”

The tour, which includes stops in Seoul, Taipei, Tokyo and Hyogo, Japan, will feature more than 110 orchestra players, as well as the mezzo-soprano Elina Garanca, the soprano Lisette Oropesa and the bass-baritone Christian Van Horn. The program includes concert performances of Bartok’s “Bluebeard’s Castle” and excerpts from various operas, including Wagner’s “Der Fliegende HollĂ€nder” and Debussy’s “PellĂ©as et MĂ©lisande,” as well as Jessie Montgomery’s “Hymn for Everyone.”

Last year NĂ©zet-SĂ©guin, who became the Met’s music director in 2018, led a company tour, the first since 2002, in Europe. (A 2021 tour there had also been canceled by the pandemic.) “Bringing live music and performances to audiences around the world is my passion,” he said in a statement.

Orchestra tours can be costly, and the Met’s finances have been strained recently: In January, the company said that it had withdrawn nearly $40 million in additional emergency funds from its endowment as it worked to recover from the pandemic closures, one of the most trying periods in its 141-year history. In the previous season, the Met took $30 million from its endowment fund.

But Gelb said the visit to Asia would generate a modest amount of revenue for the Met. The company has lined up several sponsors for the tour, including Rolex, Bank of America and So-Chung Shinn Lee, a longtime Met donor, and her husband, Tony W. Lee, an investor.

After a hiatus during the pandemic, American and European ensembles have returned to Asia, a booming market for classical music. The New York Philharmonic visited Hong Kong and Taiwan last year and sent a small group of musicians to Shanghai. The Philadelphia Orchestra sent a dozen musicians to Beijing and Shanghai last fall to mark the 50th anniversary of its pathbreaking visit to China in 1973.

Met musicians have performed in Asian countries before, but the orchestra has never led its own tour. In 2011, the company visited Japan for a series of performances to provide relief as the country grappled with the crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant after an 8.9-magnitude earthquake and tsunami.

Gelb said that he expected the Met orchestra would continue to tour overseas, though perhaps not every year. The company had been approached by presenters in mainland China about performing there in the future, he said, adding that the Met would be open to such visits.

“We want to take advantage of opportunities that make sense,” he said. “We think it’s very important for the Met to have direct contact with our international audience.”

IATSE Gets Show of Solidarity From International Unions as Contract Talks Kick Off: ‘Your Fight Is Our Fight’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Matt Loeb, president of IATSE, appears at the Many Crafts, One Fight rally on March 3, 2024.

International entertainment unions have expressed their support for IATSE as contract talks get underway.

Affiliates of UNI Global Union, which reps 500,000 works across 140 unions and guilds across the international media, entertainment and arts sector, have pledged their support for IATSE as it begins negotiations with AMPTP on its Hollywood Basic Agreement, which is set to expire on July 31. IATSE is also a UNI affiliate.

The statement of solidarity is also no doubt intended as a warning shot if productions attempt to move shoots outside the U.S. in the event of an IATSE strike.

A spokesperson for UNI declined to comment on what the federation planned to tell its international affiliates about accepting work from struck companies should a strike go ahead. But with the law varying greatly from territory to territory, UNI’s ability to mandate against working with strike companies will likely be limited.

In response to UNI’s show of support, IATSE said that global solidarity will make it harder for employers to evade union contracts.

“IATSE thanks our labor kin in the global community of entertainment unions for their strong support during this year’s negotiations,” a union spokesperson said. “We are in a new era of unprecedented solidarity in the labor movement in America and abroad. In a world where behind-the-scenes unions stand shoulder-to-shoulder, employers will have a harder time trying to outrun the protections of strong collective bargaining agreements.”

SAG-AFTRA and the WGA have repeatedly expressed their gratitude for support from IATSE and Teamster members during the strikes, and leaders have offered to return the favor this year if the crew union takes to the picket lines.

SAG-AFTRA represents its members both domestically and when they work overseas. The union has a no-strike clause in place, so its leadership likely would not instruct actors to walk off the job if a domestic show were to relocate to another country. But members would still have an individual choice about whether to stay with a show that went abroad to avoid a domestic strike.

IATSE, the Teamsters and the Basic Crafts unions began bargaining with the AMPTP on March 4. They are due back at the table next Monday.

In the statement, UNI’s general secretary Christy Hoffman noted that the international unions are watching developments closely, as they are likely to have a ripple effect.

“What happens in Hollywood reverberates across the entertainment industry and these negotiations will impact behind-the-scenes workers worldwide,” Hoffman said. “IATSE can begin bargaining with the AMPTP knowing they have got the backing of the global trade union movement and the support of half a million workers in the industry. Last year, we united behind the writers – who are also our members – until they won, and now we are ready to mobilize, cheer and stand by our IATSE siblings as they carry the flag for production crew globally.”

Philippa Childs, head of U.K. broadcasting union BECTU, and Miguel Paniagua, general secretary of Argentinian union SUTEP, have also expressed their support for IATSE.

“We face the same companies and share the same issues in an industry that is increasingly globalized,” said Childs, who is also a member of UNI’s world executive board. “The major U.S. studios and streamers are setting patterns and have a huge responsibility for the well-being of the global workforce of the entertainment industry. They need to do better.

Paniagua added: “We hope these negotiations will send a strong signal to the Americas region that good faith negotiations between producers and unions are the foundation for a fair and sustainable industry.”

When Variety spoke to the federation’s head of media and entertainment Johannes Studinger in January, he said that it would not necessarily be possible for U.S. productions to move shoots out of the country to avoid strike action, even if they wanted to, since heads of department and key crew members who were members of IATSE would not be able to continue work.

“But let’s hope it doesn’t come to that,” Studinger said.
