Top Schools in the Philippines That Offer Tourism Courses

Mar 14, 2019

By : Lis Fortun

Are you thinking of taking a course in tourism but don’t know which tourism school to go to yet?

From the breathtaking sights of Northern Luzon down to the mountainous regions of Mindanao, the Philippines is teeming with thousands of schools for all sorts of students. And chances are, a number of these schools offer tourism courses for you!

But what if you would rather take your tourism studies in a public university?

Studying in a public university has its perks. You get to study with a larger student population, which means a more competitive environment! Tuition fees in public and state universities are also relatively cheaper compared to private universities, which means your pockets can also rest easy!

Schools That Offer a Tourism Course in the Philippines

If you live anywhere in the National Capital Region (NCR) and you really want to take BS Tourism without having to spend so much, here are a few of public tourism schools in the Philippines:

Eulogio Amang Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology (EARIST)

Named after former Filipino senator Eulogio Rodriguez, EARIST has flourished into a state institution with varying certifications and memberships since its establishment in 1945.

One of these certifications is a Level II status by the Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACCUP). Aside from being a member of the State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association – National Capital Region (SCUAA-NCR), EARIST also has a place in the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges – National Capital Region’s Research Consortium.

Aside from undergraduate and graduate school programs in Engineering, Liberal Arts, Industrial Technology, and Education, EARIST also offers Bachelor of Science in Tourism under its Tourism, Hospitality and Culinary department.

Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina (PLMar)

PLMar lives up to its namesake by being a Marikina-based public institution. You can find its main campus in Greenheights Subdivision while its satellite campus is located in SSS Village. From Criminology to Mass Communication, PLMar offers a wide variety of undergraduate courses, particularly for Marikina citizens.

Students who aspire to pursue tourism-related careers can take a Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management degree, which is filed under the school’s Service Trades Department.

Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM)

Located in the heart of Manila, this public university was built in 1965 and is known as the first institution with an all-Filipino name.

Aside from medicine and law, PLM also comes with a large collection of programs, which include 37 undergraduate courses and 21 postgraduate degrees. Among these courses is PLM’s Bachelor of Science in Travel and Tourism Management (BSTTM) degree, which is found under the public university’s College of Tourism, Hotel and Travel Industry Management.

Philippine State College of Aeronautics (PhilSCA)

Known as one of the country’s top performing aeronautical engineering institutions, PhilSCA was initially known as Pampanga’s Basa Air Base College, which was built to entice more individuals to join and train for the Philippine Air Force.

With four campuses scattered across the country, PhilSCA is also the only known institution that offers masters and doctoral degrees in Aeronautical Education and Management. As a result, PhilSCA is known as the first aeronautical institution to be officially recognized by the Accrediting Agency for Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACCUP).

Given its specialization in courses related to aeronautical fields, PhilSCA’s Pasay campus offers Bachelor of Arts Major in Aviation Tourism under the Service Trades department.

Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP)

Established in 1904, PUP gained recognition throughout the years, with its AB Filipinology and AB Journalism programs being deemed as Centers of Development by CHED. Currently, PUP is regarded as the largest state university in the Philippines with more than 70,000 students enrolled in 22 different campuses scattered across Luzon.

With over 15 different colleges, PUP caters to a lot of students who wish to enroll in an affordable school. This includes aspiring tourism students, who can also apply for PUP’s Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management program under the College of Tourism, Hospitality and Transportation Management.

Taguig City University

Built in 2004, Taguig City University presently offers a series of undergraduate and graduate degrees for students who wish to pursue Business, Criminology, Arts and Sciences, Hospitality and Tourism Management, Engineering, and Education.

Fortunately, students who live near the school can opt for a Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management degree under the institution’s College of Hospitality and Tourism Management.

University of Caloocan City (UCC)

First established in 1971, the University of Caloocan City was created to provide educational opportunities for residents who are in need of financial assistance. Due to the efforts made by Caloocan City government to propagate quality education, UCC now has four branches across the city.

UCC is presently composed of five departments, namely the Social and Behavioral Sciences, Business Administration and Related, Education Science and Teacher Training, IT-Related, and Mathematics. Fortunately, aspiring tourism students in Caloocan City wouldn’t have to worry since the public institution also offers a Bachelor of Science in Tourism degree.

University of Makati (UMak)

Makati’s state university is known for being one of the first universities to offer a Senior High School curriculum, which led to introducing its first batch of graduates under the Philippine K-12 education system.

Currently, UMak offers programs under Business Administration, Fine and Applied Arts, Information Technology, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Mass Communication and Documentation, Medical and Allied, Service Trades, and Teacher Education. Filed under Service Trades is a Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management Major in Travel and Tourism program for students.

University of the Philippines Diliman

Founded in 1908, the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD) is one of eight universities united under the University of the Philippines (UP) System. Whether you’re aiming for an undergraduate, graduate, diploma, or certificate course, you would still find yourself being faced with quality education, which UP Diliman has proven over the years as the country’s state university. The school is frequently featured as one of the top 1,000 universities in the worldwide, and is also one of three universities in the Philippines to become members of the ASEAN University Network.

best tourism school in the philippines

The establishment of the UP Asian Institute of Tourism (AIT) was a long-cherished dream of the tourism industry. As far back as 1973, discussions among tourism agencies had already been in place for the creation of an academic institution focusing on tourism. This was followed by a tripartite agreement among the Department of Tourism, the Philippine Tourism Authority (now reorganized as the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority) and the University of the Philippines.

In February 26, 1976 The Asian Institute of Tourism was formally confirmed by the University of the Philippines Board of Regents as a degree-granting unit of the University of the Philippines Diliman. As Southeast Asia’s first higher academic learning institution focusing on tourism, the UP AIT Complex was formally inaugurated on November 20, 1978. The complex had two main areas – the school side which housed classrooms and learning facilities– and the AIT House, a 27-room hotel.

The hotel ceased operations in 1994 which paved the way for AIT to focus on the demands of tourism research, technical assistance, and other extension services all over the country. Through the years, AIT has been praised for developing knowledge, helping build capacity, and designing programs that are innovative and truly revolutionary. Read more here.

Hello .

Hi, Niksdc017!

Right now, we’re not aware of any programs that would automatically qualify a graduate of any particular school for a position at Philippine Airlines. From what we have seen from job advertisements in the past, companies don’t require applicants to be a graduate of any particular course or school as long as they meet the company’s requirements. So far, we haven’t encountered any companies that specifically require applicants to be beautiful or look a certain way. Instead, what they usually require is that applicants look presentable at all times. We haven’t encountered any clause about complexion, either. The height requirement is usually strict, though, because height can affect the attendant’s ability to perform their job. Still, if being a flight attendant is your dream, you might want to search around for companies that have lower height requirements. Requirements sometimes vary depending on the company, so it might be worth taking a shot.

Hello .

I’m a 4thyear student.

Hello please answer this Talaga po bang kailangan matangkad at maganda,??? I have problem about my teeth so I’m gonna get braces for good sabi ng Friends ko dapat po maganda ang ngipin, totoo po ba yon? Kahit alam kong may skill naman ako

If you were referring to becoming a flight attendant, some companies do have specific preferences when it comes to physical appearances. For that, we suggest you check out their job advertisements to see what their usual requirements are.

If you were simply referring to enrolling in BS Tourism Management and pursuing the whole bunch of other jobs that it may lead you to, we believe that’s not really the case, especially if your skills, qualifications, and experiences are up to their standards.

Added information lang: sa kahit anong course ng PUP ay P12 lang per Unit and as far as I know walang maintaining grades ang Tourism.

hi po:) Ask kulang po itong Curriculum list for BS Tourism Management is only for a major subject right? do you have a minor curriculum list for Tourism Management? and i ask lng po na grad. po ako ng associate of HRM then kung mag transfer po ako dito s pup, meron po bang maintaining ng grades na dpat po ba no lower than 2.0? meron po kasi akong planned to enroll this coming 2nd semester.

Hi, Pathrick!

Nope. It includes both minor and major subjects. You can get a copy of the curriculum from the CHED website; however, it only contains the list of the recommended subjects — not necessarily the actual subjects that the school you’ll be enrolling at will require you to take — so it’s best if you’ll ask the school directly.

We’re not really sure about the “maintaining grades” part, so we suggest you ask PUP directly so they can give you a more accurate and detailed reply.

hello i just want to ask kung kailan po pwede mag exam this year ?

Excuse me, I just want to ask what are the requirements of this course for the students.

Hi, Shainna!

Requirements vary per school, so it’s best if you’ll contact the school you wish to enroll at so they can give you a more accurate and detailed reply.

Sa Batangas state university po

Hello po! 🙂 Magkano po tuition fee ng bstm?

Hi, Evangilen!

Tuition fees may vary per school, so we suggest you contact the school where you are thinking of enrolling at so they can give you an accurate and more detailed reply.

Hi, im wondering if height and looks really matter when it comes to taking BSTM, my height is 5’0 and i hope im qualified taking BSTM.

That would depend on which particular job you intend to pursue after you graduate. As far as we know, employers that are looking for tourism officers and tour escorts are not very particular with height and appearance as long as you have the skills and qualifications. Flight attendants, however, are required to meet specific height requirements and possess certain physical attributes.

I just want to know, is clear vision also a requirement?

So far, we haven’t heard of any such particular requirement. We suggest you still contact the school you are thinking of enrolling at to be sure, though.

Hello, i wondering if height and looks matters when it comes taking BSTM, my height is 5’0 and i hope im still qualified to that course.

May I ask, What are the qualifications an individual must carry in order to pursue this course, BSTM? And also, are there many job opportunities that would await me if I took this course? I’m currently in senior high and I am interested to pursue course, but carries the fact that Im still quite not sure, Thats why I visited your site to get an answer to my questions. Thank you in advance. 🙂

Hi, Ysabella!

Thank you for visiting our site.

If you meant educational attainment and things like that, any high school graduate can take the course. If you meant skills or attributes, having good organizational skills, communication skills, analytical skills, and multitasking skills would help.

You can get an idea of the number and kinds of jobs waiiting for tourism graduates from this page: http://job-search.jobstreet.com.ph/philippines/job-opening.php?key=tourism+management&location=&specialization=&position=&ss=1&by=search&src=11

You can find the standard tuition and miscellaneous fees that PUP imposes on this page: http://www.pup.edu.ph/Accounting/StudentServices/Fees.aspx , but for more specific details, it’s best if you’ll contact them directly so they can give you an accurate and more detailed response.

papaano po ba mag-inquire sa school na po ito ? at magkano po ba ang tuition fee dito , umaabot po ba sa magkano ?

Hi, Terence!

Just click the name of the school you want to enroll at and you’ll find more information about their contact information as well as their examination and admission requirements. We don’t have available information about their tuition fees, though, so it’s best if you’ll ask their official representatives for details.

Good luck! 🙂

Academic Program

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) in Tourism (Curriculum)

The Bachelor of Science in Tourism is a four-year course that aims to develop entrepreneurs, managers and qualified personnel for the tourism industry.

The program requires a student to take 47 courses equivalent to 150 units. Around 45 units are general education subjects (under the Revised General Education Program of the University) taken in service units of the University, such as the College of Arts and Letters, College of Social Science and Philosophy, and the College of Science.

The remaining units are taken in the Institute and consist of 19 required tourism subjects; five tourism electives, six units of which could be for study of one foreign language; and internship of 360 hours. On average, this requires taking 18 units per semester over 4 years, excluding internship (with a credit of 5 units) during the summer of 3rd year.

The subjects cover general management, accounting and finance, marketing and promotions, tourism laws, tourism planning and development, and courses that discuss the various facets of the tourism industry.

A special feature of the program is the internship in any of the industrial sectors of tourism. Students are required to undergo 360 hours (equivalent to five course credits) of training in the summer prior to their senior year. By getting practical exposure in a sector of their choice, students can make informed decisions on their career options, which may be in the airline, hotel, resort, convention, travel agency, tour operations, national tourism organization, and allied fields.

15 Best Places to Visit in the Philippines

Written by Anietra Hamper Updated Sep 16, 2022

The Philippines is a destination that is easy to visit multiple times due to its more than 7,000 islands. The most difficult decision you make as a traveler, is figuring out which places to visit first. The Philippines is divided into the three main island groups of Luzon , Visayas, and Mindanao , representing different regions in the country.

The scenery in each region of the Philippines ranges from mountainous and tropical to metropolitan. You can enjoy a day of walking the historical colonial streets of the capital city of Manila or catch a rare glimpse of tiny tarsier monkeys at a private sanctuary on the island of Bohol . The steep, plush mountains provide unforgettable hiking experiences.

Since you are surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, it's not surprising the Philippines has some of the best beaches in Asia , and the scuba diving opportunities are outstanding.

Plan your travels around this tropical island nation with our list of the best places to visit in the Philippines.

7. Davao City

9. coron island, 11. puerto princesa, 13. apo island, 14. el nido, 15. siargao, map of places to visit in the philippines.

Boracay

There is a reason that Boracay Island is considered the beach capital of the Philippines because there are more than 12 beaches. This tiny island in the west Visayas region is ideal for beach-goers who are after simple relaxation in the sun or water activities. White Beach , on the west side of the island, is one of the best beaches in the Philippines .

Puka Shell Beach is on the tip of the island and is a favorite spot for shell collectors. Cagban Beach is a quiet spot with nearby caves that are rumored to still contain treasure chests. Diniwid Beach is a tiny beach at the north end of White Beach that has the best view of the island from a platform rock located there.

This island is known for its many resorts, so finding a place to stay is easy. For a panoramic view of the island, take a day trip to Mount Luho , its highest point.

Tarsier

The island of Bohol in the Philippines' central Visayas region runs at a slower pace, and it's a destination that showcases the country's natural beauty. One of the most unique natural wonders on the island is the Chocolate Hills in Carmen . This UNESCO -protected site is a collection of 1,200 geological formations that turn brown in the dry season, resembling a landscape of chocolate candy kisses.

Bohol is home to a family-owned sanctuary for the tiny tarsier primate, known for its large engaging eyes. For a small fee, you can take an intimate walk through the grounds, and stand inches away from the small nocturnal mammal.

The top draw of Bohol is the beach. Panglao Island features some of the best beaches in Bohol: Alona Beach and Danao Beach , which have fantastic diving; Dao Beach and Bingag Beach , which are popular resort areas; Bolod Beach, which has a large stretch of shoreline; and Doljo Beach , which is fairly remote but fantastic for finding seashells.

Snorkeling with a whale shark

The island of Cebu, in the central Visayas region, is considered the port to some of the best diving and snorkeling in the Philippines. If you are an underwater enthusiast, Cebu is one of your best options for excursions that get you up-close to whale sharks, coral reefs, and sea turtles.

Some of the most spectacular scenery from the water near Cebu are the sea caves that attract photographers and outdoor enthusiasts looking for unique diving and snorkeling sites. The Sudlon National Park , located approximately an hour from Cebu City, is a breathtaking park to explore and hike.

While Cebu's greatest draw is its water, Cebu City is a metropolitan area, with tourist attractions like museums and cathedrals that will interest history buffs.

Banaue

The rice terraces of Banaue are one of the most striking things to see in the Philippines. The emerald-green terraces are an agricultural wonder in this area. Some of the terraces are estimated to have been hand-carved into the mountainside more than 2,000 years ago.

The Batad Rice Terraces and the Bangaan Rice Terraces are protected UNESCO World Heritage sites .

For a deeper taste of this region, take a stroll through the Banaue Ethnic Village or the Hiwang Village to mingle with the Indigenous people who farm the rice terraces.

Your most impressive view of the terraces is at sunrise, when clouds and fog lift off the mountain to reveal the intricate landscape of the terraces. You can base yourself in the town of Banaue and hike or drive to the Batad rice terraces, or arrange a stay in a native hut of the Ifugao people for a more authentic experience.

Bantay Bell Tower in Vigan

The historical city of Vigan in the northern Philippines is one of the most charming towns to visit in the Luzon region. Its culture is a fusion of Chinese and Spanish influences originating from settlers to the area.

Take a ride in a horse-drawn kalesa through the streets and admire the colonial architecture, courtesy of the Spanish who colonized the area in the 18th century. Vigan is a city with many nuances to explore.

The best view of the area is from the Bantay Bell Tower , which is also a noted landmark in the area. The Calle Crisologo historic district is a walkable district, where you will encounter many local craftsman and see historical architecture.

A visit to the St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral is breathtaking and a perfect spot to sit and people-watch as you take in the local culture.

Jeepney in front of the Minor Basilica of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz, Manila

The Philippines capital of Manila, on the island of Luzon, is a bustling city with non-stop activity. Hop on board one of the colorful jeepneys, the main form of public transportation, to get a taste of local life while you visit Manila's top attractions .

Usually over-packed with locals, the bumpy ride through the streets on the iconic and kitschy jeep/bus hybrid vehicles will be one of the highlights of your visit.

Plan stops to the main park in the city, Rizal Park , and the San Agustin Church , which was built in the 16th century. Buy local fruits and handmade gifts at the public market at Quiapo Church , where you are likely to see several thousand people show up on Fridays for worship.

Philippine eagle

For a city scene outside of Manila, head to Davao City, which has a large metropolitan area. Davao City is the main city in the southern Philippine region of Mindanao .

Despite its malls and large population, Davao City features many natural elements, including the Eden Nature Park , Philippine Eagle Center, and the Davao Baywalk near the sea.

One of the best places to visit in Davao City is Mount Apo , the highest mountain in the Philippines. Davao City is a prime location for shopping, as there are several large malls, including Abreeza Mall and SM Lanang Premier Mall . For a peek into Davao City history and culture, the tiny Davao Museum of History and Ethnography is worth a visit.

Hanging coffins of Sagada

One of the most unique experiences you can have in the Philippines is in the northern tribal region in Sagada. Nestled in the rugged and remote Cordillera Mountains are tribes that embrace the occasional visitor.

This area is a paradise for the advanced outdoor enthusiast. The steep mountains and high elevation enhance the thrill and skill level required for outdoor adventure. Hiking is popular in Sagada, particularly to Mount Ampaco , which has the highest peak in the region or through Echo Valley , which has steep and rugged terrain.

One of the best places to visit in this region of the Philippines is the hanging coffins that hide deep in the mountains . It is best to connect with a local guide to take you to this incredible site because this is not a tourist area, but rather an authentic tribal region hiding an experience worthy of bragging rights.

Coron Island

One of the top diving destinations in the world , Coron Island is a tropical paradise, with electric blue and green water that almost seems unreal. The mountainous island sits on the tip of the Palawan island region, the western-most section of islands in the Philippines.

The island is popular for diving because of the numerous wrecks here. Many of the preserved shipwrecks are located in depths ranging from shallow water at just three meters to deep water at 42 meters.

Some of the wrecks require more than one dive to explore due to their size, but you can easily spend a week diving in this area. For non-shipwreck diving, check out Barracuda Lake, a former volcano with many unusual rock formations and fish.

Baguio

Baguio is a city tucked away in a mountainous region on Luzon Island. Though it is a city, Baguio is intimate and reminiscent of a cottage-type environment. Baguio is called the City of Pines for the rich pine forests and cooler temperatures that surround it.

You can explore one of the many hiking and biking trails or take in a round of golf at one of the resorts in the area. Baguio is unique to other destinations in the Philippines because the city is surrounded by trees and not water.

Parks like Mines View and Burnham let you enjoy some of the flora and fauna that are special to this region. Be sure to spend some time along Session Road , which is the main drag through Baguio, where you can take in a slice of local life.

Puerto Princesa

The rock islands, caves, and natural parks of Palawan Island are the hidden paradise of the Philippines. The coastal city of Puerto Princesa is where you should base yourself in order to explore some of these natural gems of the country.

The Subterranean River National Park is a great first stop to see a five-mile underground river and impressive limestone caves. The UNESCO World Heritage site has boat tours that take you through the national park.

Other must-see spots in Puerto Princesa are Honda Bay , which is popular for snorkeling, and Ugong Rock , where you can try ziplining and caving.

Samal

On Samal Island, also called Garden City of Samal, hiking, diving, and kayaking are a way of life. One of the top things to do on Samal Island, besides relaxing at the beach, is visit the Monfort Bat Sanctuary , which is home to millions of bats in the caves.

An enjoyable day trip away from the beach is to Hagimit Falls , where you can walk on the nature trails and cool off in one of the pools below the tropical waterfalls. Samal Island is a short distance away from Davao City, which makes a great change of pace when you want a more metropolitan scene or a broader range of dining.

Sea turtle in the waters off Apo Island

If a swim with sea turtles sounds like the experience of a lifetime then you will want to head to Apo Island in the Philippines. The reason this location lends itself to swimming with turtles and other sea life is because of the protected marine sanctuary. The Apo Island Marine Reserve is where you can take guided trips to see the sea turtles up close and snorkel at the coral reefs.

The island is an eco-traveler's dream. The protected landscape is some of the most untouched in the country. For great views of the island and the water go to the Apo Island View Deck . To get a sense of life on the island for the locals take a stroll on the Lagoon Trail through the Apo Village to see the local flora and fauna and engage with those who live on the island.

Aerial view of El Nido, Palawan, Philippines

El Nido is a stunning place to visit in the Philippines for its clear water lagoons, marine life, coral reefs, and limestone cliffs. You can even take part in cliff climbing excursions, or go to Taraw Peak to experience a canopy walk with the best views of the landscape.

El Nido is also known for its pristine beaches, like Nacpan Beach and Lio Beach , and as the launch point for island-hopping adventures. Island hopping excursions to places like El Nido Big Lagoon or Snake Island to experience the cliffs and caves from the water are a memorable way to experience El Nido.

Wooden walkway for surfers to access the Cloud 9 surf break on Siargao Island

Travelers that enjoy making an itinerary up as they go should put Siargao Island on the agenda. The small island is big with experiences, from sought-after surfing waves to unusual rock formations and stunning waterfalls.

Surfing is what Siargao is most known for. The famous Cloud 9 break is here, but there are many coastline spots that bring in large waves. So, even if you do not surf, watching some of the championship surfers that come to the island is a fun activity.

Deep sea fishing is popular out of Siargao as anglers try year-round for sailfish and mahi-mahi. Another trip option when you visit Siargao is to do a bit of island hopping to places like Bucas Grande , where you can see the Sohoton Caves and the non-sting jellyfish.
